Simple Summary: High ambient temperature is a significant factor contributing to economic losses in the poultry industry. Heat stress had adverse effects on the growth performance, reproductive performance, and egg production of poultry birds. However, the specific impact of heat stress on internal egg yolk quality parameters and the potential mechanisms of local chickens remain to be further studied. The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of heat exposure on internal egg yolk quality parameters and their possible mechanisms in Guangdong Province Xinyi Huaixiang chickens. Our results revealed that heat exposure (32 °C) for 6 weeks reduced yolk weight, yolk color, and egg weight. Additionally, we observed an upregulation of lipid metabolism-related genes, including SREBP-1c, ACACA, and FASN. These results provided valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of egg yolk quality changes induced by heat stress. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for mitigating the negative impact of heat stress on poultry production and improving the overall performance and well-being of poultry birds. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of high temperature on internal egg yolk quality parameters and their possible mechanisms in Huaixiang chickens. This study consisted of two treatments, and each treatment had six replicates with six birds per cage. A total of seventy-two 26-week-old female Huaixiang chickens were randomly divided into a normal-temperature group (NT) and a high-temperature group (HT) for 6 weeks. And these hens were exposed to 25 ± 2 °C and 32 ± 2 °C, respectively. Their relative humidity was maintained at 55–65%. The results showed that the HT group significantly reduced yolk weight, yolk color, and egg weight compared to the NT group (p < 0.05). Heat stress caused vacuolar degeneration of the liver and reduced the absolute liver weight (p < 0.05). Both yolk triglyceride (TG) and liver TG in the HT group were significantly higher than in the NT group (p < 0.05). However, the liver total cholesterol (TC) level in the HT group was remarkably lower than that in the NT group (p < 0.05). Additionally, heat stress remarkably enhanced SREBP-1c, ACACA, and FASN lipid metabolism-related gene mRNA expression levels in Huaixiang chicken liver after 6 weeks of heat exposure (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the HT group had remarkably reduced total amino acid, Cys, and Tyr levels in the yolk when compared with the NT group in our experiment (p < 0.05). In conclusion, heat stress causes egg yolk quality reduction and abnormal lipid metabolism in Huaixiang chickens. To promote the application of polyamide 6 (PA6) in wood–plastic composites, the negative effects associated with the thermal degradation of plant fibers must be overcome. In this study, waste bamboo fibers were subjected to pyrolysis and ball milling to afford nano bamboo-based biochar (BC), which was subsequently used as reinforcement to prepare PA6/BC nano composites by injection molding. In addition, the processing fluidity, water absorption, mechanical properties, and interface compatibility of PA6/BC composites were discussed. Results revealed that a BC content of less than 30 wt% is beneficial to improve the processing fluidity of the composites. With the increase in the BC content, the density of the PA6/BC composites gradually increased, while the water absorption of the PA6/BC composites gradually decreased, and the maximum decrease was 46%. Compared to that of pure PA6, the mechanical strength of PA6/BC composites was improved by the addition of BC, and the maximum tensile/flexural strength and modulus of PA6/BC composites increased by 41%/72% and 195%/244%, respectively. However, the impact strength decreased by 27%. After immersion treatment, the dimensional stability and mechanical strength of the composites decreased, while toughness improved. At a BC content of less than 40 wt%, BC particles exhibited good dispersibility and wettability in the PA6 matrix, and the rough surface and rich pore structure of BC rendered strong mechanical interlocking effects and good interface compatibility, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the composites. Simple Summary: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the non-starch polysaccharide enzymes cocktail (NSPEC) on growth performance, nutrient digestion and gas emissions on finishing pigs. The addition of the NSPEC into a corn-miscellaneous meal diet improved feed conversion ratio and increased the apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, crude protein and gross energy of the finishing pigs. Furthermore, the digestible energy of the diet was also increased by the NSPEC supplementation in the diet. In addition, the inclusion of NSPEC in the corn-miscellaneous meal diet reduced carbon dioxide emissions of a finishing pig house. The accumulation of manure could increase the release of ammonia in a pig house. The NSPEC is a combination of cellulase, xylanase, β-glucanase, β-mannanase, α-galactosidase and pectinase optimized by assessing the in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of corn-miscellaneous meal diet using an in vitro method of simulating digestion in the stomach and intestine of growing pigs. Growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients and energy were measured. The gas concentration of ammonia, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane in the environmental assessment chambers were determined. The gas detecting period was divided into three frequencies of manure removal of every 1d, 2d and 3d. The addition of NSPEC into the corn-miscellaneous meal diet decreased feed conversation rate (FCR) and increased the ATTD of dry matter, crude protein, gross energy, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber of pigs (p < 0.05). The digestible energy was also improved (p < 0.05) significantly by NSPEC supplementation in the diet. Furthermore, the supplementation of the NSPEC reduced (p < 0.05) carbon dioxide concentration in the chambers. The ammonia emissions were significantly increased according to average 1d, 2d and 3d manure removal procedures (p < 0.01). These results indicated that the inclusion of optimal NSPEC in a corn-miscellaneous meal diet improved growth performance, nutrient digestibility and reduced carbon dioxide emissions on finishing pigs. In this study, composites of poly (hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate) (PHBV) with untreated luffa fibers (ULF) and NaOH-H2O2 treated luffa fibers (TLF) were prepared by hot press forming. The properties of luffa fibers (LFs) and composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and other analysis methods. Results showed that pre-treatment effectively removed pectin, hemicellulose, and lignin, thus reducing the moisture absorptivity of LFs. The flexural strength of TLF/PHBV was higher than that of ULF/PHBV. With 60% LF content, the flexural strengths of ULF/PHBV and TLF/PHBV reached 75.23 MPa and 90.73 MPa, respectively, 219.7% and 285.6% more than that of pure PHBV. Water absorptivities of composites increased with increase in LF content. Water absorptivity of TLF/PHBV was lower than that of ULF/PHBV. The flexural strengths of composites decreased after immersion in water at room temperature. Meanwhile, flexural strength of TLF/PHBV was lower than that of ULF/PHBV. Pretreatment of LFs effectively improved the bonding between fibers and PHBV, resulting in enhanced and thus improved the moisture resistance of composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Luffa is a lightweight porous material with excellent biocompatibility and abundant resources. In this paper, three kinds of softening treatment methods, alkali-hydrogen peroxide (Method 1), alkali-acetic acid (Method 2), and alkali-urea (Method 3), were used to soften high-density (HD) cylindrical luffa (CL) mattress-filling materials (MFM). Microscopic observation, mechanical performance testing and other analyses were performed to evaluate the effects of the three kinds of softening methods on the wettability, compression resilience and support performance of CL MFM. The results showed that: (1) After the treatment by Method 1, Method 2 and Method 3, the peak stress of CL decreased by 73%, 10% and 27%, respectively. In addition, after three kinds of softening treatments, the uniformity of CL increased. (2) When the CL MFM of high density rank treated by Method 1 was compressed by 40%, the firmness values of the surface, core and bottom reduced by 53.49% 40.72%, and 46.17%, respectively, compared to that of untreated CL. In addition, for the CL MFM of high density rank treated by Method 3 and then compressed to 60%, the firmness of the surface layer, core layer and bottom layer reduced by 41.2%, 33.7%, and 36.9%, respectively. (3) The contact angle of luffa treated by Method 3 was the smallest, next came Method 1 and Method 2, and untreated was the largest. (4) After the treatment by Method 3, the fiber bundle of luffa was intact, and the compression resilience of the CL was obviously increased. The crack initiation point can be regarded as a sign of composite failure and plays a vital role in the evaluation of fracture toughness. Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) are viscoelastic materials and the evaluation of fracture mechanism and toughness has a great significance in their applications. Therefore, we used the acoustic emission (AE) technique to measure the crack initiation point of the WPCs and evaluate their fracture toughness. The results show that the novel AE-based methods were more effective than the conventional standard methods for characterization of the crack initiation point. Using the relationship of cumulative AE events with time and load, the critical failure load was quickly determined, and then the critical stress intensity factor and fracture toughness were calculated. The thermal performance of wood–plastic composites (WPCs) with different fiber, different fiber contents, and different lubricants were investigated in this paper. The results show that the thermal degradation temperature, melting temperature, crystallization temperature, crystallinity, and viscosity of WPCs with wood fiber were slightly higher than those of WPCs with floor sanding powder and rice husk. As the wood fiber content increased, the melting temperature and crystallinity of WPCs decreased while the crystallization temperature, viscosity, and pseudoplasticity increased. When the wood fiber content was increased to 60%, the dimensional stability of WPCs tended to be constant, and a higher wood fiber content was not conducive for processing of WPCs. WPCs had a small coefficient of linear thermal expansion at low temperature and demonstrated a good dimensional stability. The presence of lubricant reduced the viscosity and increased the pseudoplasticity of the WPCs, which is advantageous for the dimensional stability of WPCs at low temperature while making it worse for high temperatures. The damage and fracture of fiber reinforced polymer composites are vital constraints in their applications. To understand the mechanism of damage of wood fiber (WF) reinforced high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites, we used waste WF and recycled HDPE (Re-HDPE) as the raw materials and prepared high-filled WF/Re-HDPE composites via extrusion. The damage and fracture mode and failure mechanism of the composites with different WF contents (50%, 60%, and 70%) was studied under a three-point bending test by combining the acoustic emission (AE) technique and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The results show that AE technology can better assist in understanding the progress of damage and fracture process of WF/Re-HDPE composites, and determine the damage degree, damage accumulation, and damage mode. The damage and fracture process of the composites presents three main stages: the appearance of initial damage, damage accumulation, and destructive damage to fracture. The matrix deformation, fiber breakage, interface delamination, fiber-matrix debonding, fiber pull-out, and matrix cracking were the dominant modes for the damage of high-filled WF/Re-HDPE composites under bending load, and the AE signal changed in different damage stages and damage modes. In addition, the WF content and repeated loading had a significant influence on the composite's damage and fracture. The 50% and 60% WF/Re-HDPE composites produced irreversible damage when repeated load exceeded 75% of the maximum load, while 25% of the maximum load could cause irreversible damage for 70% WF/Re-HDPE composites. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate–co–3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a biodegradable polymer and has several potential applications. Herein, we have used a rich biomass resource, rice husk, to obtain rice husk nano-SiO2 (RHNS) and prepared RHNS/PHBV composites by using hot-press molding. The results showed that the amorphous nature of spherical nano-SiO2 particles with an average diameter of 40–80 nm was obtained. The tensile strength and flexural strength of the RHNS/PHBV-3 composite reached up to 23.515 and 75.669 MPa, respectively, corresponding to an increase of 33.65% and 15.54% as compared to pure PHBV. The enhanced mechanical properties of the RHNS/PHBV composite can be attributed to the uniform dispersion and strong interfacial bonding of RHNS with the PHBV matrix. In addition, the water absorption rate of the RHNS/PHBV composite increased from 0.26% to 0.35% and the water swelling ratio followed the given order in different directions: thickness > width > length. Furthermore, the initial degradation temperature and residual rate of combustion at 700 °C of the composites increased with higher content of RHNS, which represents the enhanced thermal stability of RHNS/PHBV composites. Luffa sponge (LS) is a resourceful material with fibro-vascular reticulated structure and extremely high porosity, which make it a potential candidate for manufacturing light mattress. In this study, two types of LS columns, namely high-density (HD) and low-density (LD) columns, were investigated as materials for filling the mattress. The results showed that the compressive strength of HD LS columns was significantly greater than that of LD LS columns. However, the densification strains of the two types of LS column were both in the range of 0.6 to 0.7. Besides, HD LS columns separately pressed to the smooth plateau region and the initial densification region exhibited a partial recovery of instant height when they were unloaded, and then both of them showed no more than 4.2% of height recovery after being allowed to rest at a constant temperature and humidity for 24 h. In contrast, when LD LS columns were compressed to the smooth plateau region, the height recovery was less than 1.62% compared to when they were pressed to the initial densification region, and that was more than 15.62%. Similar to other plant fibers used as mattress fillers, the two types of LS columns also showed good water absorption capacity—both of them could absorb water from as much as 2.07 to 3.45 times their own weight. At the same time, the two types of LS columns also showed good water desorption. The water desorption ratio of HD and LD LS columns separately reached 76.86 and 91.44%, respectively, after being let rest at a constant temperature and humidity for 13 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advancement in science and technology has led to luffa sponge (LS) being widely used as a natural material in industrial application because of its polyporous structure and light texture. To enhance the utility of LS fibers as the reinforcement of lightweight composite materials, the current study investigates their water absorption, mechanical properties, anatomical characteristics and thermal performance. Hence, moisture regain and tensile properties of LS fiber bundles were measured in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards while their structural characteristics were investigated via microscopic observation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface morphology and fractured surface of fiber bundles. The test results show that the special structure where the phloem tissues degenerate to cavities had a significant influence on the mechanical properties of LS fiber bundles. Additionally, the transverse sectional area occupied by fibers in a fiber bundle (S F ), wall thickness, ratio of wall to lumen of fiber cell, and crystallinity of cellulose had substantial impact on the mechanical properties of LS fiber bundles. Furthermore, the density of fiber bundles of LS ranged within 385.46-468.70 kg/m³, significantly less than that of jute (1360.40 kg/m³) and Arenga engleri (950.20 kg/m³). However, LS fiber bundles demonstrated superior specific modulus than Arenga engleri.
