We previously demonstrated that patients with metastatic unresectable stage IIIb–IV melanoma receiving cetirizine (a second-generation H1 antagonist antihistamine) premedication with immunotherapy had better outcomes than those not receiving cetirizine. In this retrospective study, we searched for a gene signature potentially predictive of the response to the addition of cetirizine to checkpoint inhibition (nivolumab or pembrolizumab with or without previous ipilimumab). Transcriptomic analysis showed that inducible T cell costimulator ligand (ICOSLG) expression directly correlated with the disease control rate (DCR) when detected with a loading value > 0.3. A multivariable logistic regression model showed a positive association between the DCR and ICOSLG expression for progression-free survival and overall survival. ICOSLG expression was associated with CD64, a specific marker of M1 macrophages, at baseline in the patient samples who received cetirizine concomitantly with checkpoint inhibitors, but this association was not present in subjects who had not received cetirizine. In conclusion, our results show that the clinical advantage of concomitant treatment with cetirizine during checkpoint inhibition in patients with malignant melanoma is associated with high ICOSLG expression, which could predict the response to immune checkpoint inhibitor blockade. Resistance biomarkers are needed to identify patients with advanced melanoma obtaining a response to ICI treatment and developing resistance later. We searched a combination of molecular signatures of response to ICIs in patients with metastatic melanoma. In a retrospective study on patients with metastatic melanoma treated with an anti-PD-1 agent carried out at Istituto Nazionale Tumori—IRCCS—Fondazione "G. Pascale", Naples, Italy. We integrated a whole proteome profiling of metastatic tissue with targeted transcriptomics. To assess the prognosis of patients according to groups of low and high risk, we used PFS and OS as outcomes. To identify the proteins and mRNAs gene signatures associated with the patient's response groups, the discriminant analysis for sparse data performed via partial least squares procedure was performed. Tissue samples from 22 patients were analyzed. A combined protein and gene signature associated with poorer response to ICI immunotherapy in terms of PFS and OS was identified. The PFS and OS Kaplan–Meier curves were significantly better for patients with high expression of the protein signature compared to patients with low expression of the protein signature and who were high-risk (Protein: HR = 0.023, 95% CI: 0.003–0.213; p < 0.0001. Gene: HR = 0.053, 95% CI: 0.011–0.260; p < 0.0001). The Kaplan–Meier curves showed that patients with low-risk gene signatures had better PFS (HR = 0 0.221, 95% CI: 0.071–0.68; p = 0.007) and OS (HR = 0.186, 95% CI: 0.05–0.695; p = 0.005). The proteomic and transcriptomic combined analysis was significantly associated with the outcomes of the anti-PD-1 treatment with a better predictive value compared to a single signature. All the patients with low expression of protein and gene signatures had progression within 6 months of treatment (median PFS = 3 months, 95% CI: 2–3), with a significant difference vs. the low-risk group (median PFS = not reached; p < 0.0001), and significantly poorer survival (OS = 9 months, 95% CI: 5–9) compared to patients with high expression of protein and gene signatures (median OS = not reached; p < 0.0001). We propose a combined proteomic and transcriptomic signature, including genes involved in pro-tumorigenic pathways, thereby identifying patients with reduced probability of response to immunotherapy with ICIs for metastatic melanoma. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as one of the most promising solar-light-activated polymeric metal-free semiconductor photocatalysts due to its thermal physicochemical stability but also its characteristics of environmentally friendly and sustainable material. Despite the challenging properties of g-C3N4, its photocatalytic performance is still limited by the low surface area, together with the fast charge recombination phenomena. Hence, many efforts have been focused on overcoming these drawbacks by controlling and improving the synthesis methods. With regard to this, many structures including strands of linearly condensed melamine monomers, which are interconnected by hydrogen bonds, or highly condensed systems, have been proposed. Nevertheless, complete and consistent knowledge of the pristine material has not yet been achieved. Thus, to shed light on the nature of polymerised carbon nitride structures, which are obtained from the well-known direct heating of melamine under mild conditions, we combined the results obtained from XRD analysis, SEM and AFM microscopies, and UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopies with the data from the Density Functional Theory method (DFT). An indirect band gap and the vibrational peaks have been calculated without uncertainty, thus highlighting a mixture of highly condensed g-C3N4 domains embedded in a less condensed "melon-like" framework. Nanocomposite materials have recently attracted great attention for their wide range of applications, such as in smart materials, flexible electronics, and deformation sensing applications. Such materials make it possible to combine a polymer with functional fillers. In this study, flexible artificial leathers, exhibiting insulating properties and containing 1.5 or 2wt.% of graphene oxide (GO) in the polyurethane (PU) layer, were electrically activated via CO2 laser irradiation to obtain conductive paths at the surface exposed to the laser beam. As the material retained its insulating properties out of the irradiation areas, the laser scribing method allowed, at least in principle, a printed circuit to be easily and quickly fabricated. Combining a variety of investigation methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical profilometry, IR and Raman spectroscopies, and direct current (DC) and alternate current (AC) electrical measurements, the effects of the laser irradiation were investigated, and the so-obtained electrical properties of laser-activated GO/PU regions were elucidated to unveil their potential use in both static and dynamic mechanical conditions. In more detail, it was shown that under appropriate CO2 laser irradiation, GO sheets into the GO/PU layer were locally photoreduced to form reduced-GO (RGO) sheets. It was verified that the RGO sheets were entangled, forming an accumulation path on the surface directly exposed to the laser beam. As the laser process was performed along regular paths, these RGO sheets formed electrically conductive wires, which exhibited piezoresistive properties when exposed to mechanical deformations. It was also verified that such piezoresistive paths showed good reproducibility when subjected to small flexural stresses during cyclic testing conditions. In brief, laser-activated GO/PU artificial leathers may represent a new generation of metal-free materials for electrical transport applications of low-current signals and embedded deformation sensors. Among all oxides, based on: (i) chemical compatibility of the supporting material with molten Li SB 4 sb (OH) SB 3 sb Br; (ii) anti-leakage effectiveness and maximum salt loading; and (iii) thermal and microstructural properties and stability of Li SB 4 sb (OH) SB 3 sb B, MgO nanoparticles were found the most promising oxide also due to the fact that all of the other oxides studied showed more or less pronounced upon heating and upon cycling conditions. In the last few decades, global energy requirements have grown exponentially, and increased demand is expected in the upcoming decades. In this work, four types of nanosponges were prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and D-glucose (GLU) with different molar ratios (1.5:1, 2:1, 2.5:1 and 3:1). The obtained PMDA/GLU nanosponges were then pyrolyzed at 800 °C for 30 min under N2 gas flow. The prepared polymeric nanosponges were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental and thermogravimetric analyses to unravel the role played by the different molar ratio of the precursors in the formation of the polymer. The pyrolyzed nanosponges were investigated by means of porosity measurements, X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Notably, no significant correlation of the amounts of used precursors with the porous texture and structure was evidenced. The results corroborate that PMDA and GLU can be easily combined to prepare nanosponges and that the carbon materials produced by their pyrolysis can be associated with glassy carbons with a microporous texture and relatively high surface area. Such hard carbons can be easily obtained and shrewdly used to segregate relatively small molecules and organic contaminants; in this study methylene blue adsorption was investigated. Polycarbonate (PC), a thermoplastic polymer with excellent properties, is used in many advanced technological applications. When PC is blended with other polymers or additives, new properties, such as electrical properties, can be available. In this study, carbon black (CB) was meltcompounded with PC to produce polymer compounds with compositions (10-16 wt.% of CB), which are close to or above the electrical percolation threshold (13.5-14 wt.% of CB). Effects due to nanofiller dispersion/aggregation in the polymer matrix, together with phase composition, glass transition temperature, morphology and textural properties, were studied by using thermal analysis methods (thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry) and scanning electron microscopy. The DC electrical properties of these materials were also investigated by means of electrical conductivity measurements and correlated with the "structure" of the CB, to better explain the behaviour of the composites close to the percolation threshold. MoS2/TiO2 nanostructures made of MoS2 nanoparticles covering TiO2 nanosheets have been synthesized, either via ex situ or in situ approaches. The morphology and structure of the MoS2/TiO2 hybrid nanostructures have been investigated and imaged by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), while the vibrational and optical properties have been investigated by Raman, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and UV−visible (UV–vis) spectroscopies. Different stacking levels and MoS2 nanosheets distribution on TiO2 nanosheets have been carefully evaluated from HRTEM images. Surface sites on the main exposed faces of both materials have been established by means of in situ FTIR spectra of CO probe molecule adsorption. The results of the ex situ and in situ approaches are compared to underline the role of the synthesis processes affecting the morphology and structure of MoS2 nanosheets, such as curvature, surface defects, and stacking order. It will be shown that as a result of the in situ approach, the reactivity of the TiO2 nanosheets and hence, in turn, the MoS2–TiO2 nanosheets interaction are modified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent successes in the use of immunotherapy to treat cancer have led to a multiplicity of new compounds in development. Novel clinical-grade biomarkers are needed to guide the choice of these agents to obtain the maximal likelihood of patient benefit. Predictive biomarkers for immunotherapy differ from the traditional biomarkers used for targeted therapies: the complexity of the immune response and tumour biology requires a more holistic approach than the use of a single analyte biomarker. This paper reviews novel biomarker approaches for the effective development of immune-oncology therapies, highlighting the promise of the advances in next-generation gene expression profiling that allow biologic information to be efficiently organized and interpreted for a maximum predictive value at the individual patient level. This paper presents a study on the photovoltaic effect of a graphene/MoS2/Si double heterostructure, grown by rapid chemical vapor deposition. It was found that the double junctions of the graphene/MoS2 Schottky junction and the MoS2/Si heterostructure played important roles in enhancing the device's performance. They allowed more electron-hole pairs to be efficiently generated, separated, and collected in the graphene/MoS2/Si double interface. The device demonstrated an open circuit voltage of 0.51 V and an energy conversion efficiency of 2.58% under an optical illumination of 500 mW/cm2. The photovoltaic effect of the device was partly attributed to the strong light absorption and photoresponse of the few-layer MoS2 film, and partly ascribed to the high carrier-collection-rate of the double van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) in the device. A comprehensive study on the sulfur doping of Ti O2, by means of H2S treatment at 673 K, has been performed in order to highlight the role of sulfur in affecting the properties of the system, as compared to the native TiO2. The focus of this study is to find a relationship among the surface, structure, and morphology properties, by means of a detailed chemical and physical characterization of the samples. In particular, transmission electron microscopy images provide a simple tool to have a direct and immediate evidence of the effects of H2S action on the TiO2 particles structure and surface defects. Furthermore, from spectroscopy analyses, the peculiar surface, optical properties, and methylene blue photodegradation test of S-doped TiO2 samples, as compared to pure TiO2, have been investigated and explained by the effects caused by the exchange of S species with O species and by the surface defects induced by the strong H2S treatment. Polyamide 66 (PA66) is a well-known engineering thermoplastic polymer, primarily employed in polymer composites with fillers and additives of different nature and dimensionality (1D, 2D and 3D) used as alternatives to metals in various technological applications. In this work, carbon black (CB), a conductive nanofiller, was used to reinforce the PA66 polymer in the 9–27 wt. % CB loading range. The reason for choosing CB was intrinsically associated with its nature: a nanostructured carbon filler, whose agglomeration characteristics affect the electrical properties of the polymer composites. Crystallinity, phase composition, thermal behaviour, morphology, microstructure, and electrical conductivity, which are all properties engendered by nanofiller dispersion in the polymer, were investigated using thermal analyses (thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry), microscopies (scanning electron and atomic force microscopies), and electrical conductivity measurements. Interestingly, direct current (DC) electrical measurements and conductive-AFM mapping through the samples enable visualization of the percolation paths and the ability of CB nanoparticles to form aggregates that work as conductive electrical pathways beyond the electrical percolation threshold. This finding provides the opportunities to investigate the degree of filler dispersion occurring during the transformation processes, while the results of the electrical properties also contribute to enabling the use of such conductive composites in sensor and device applications. In this regard, the results presented in this paper provide evidence that conductive carbon-filled polymer composites can work as touch sensors when they are connected with conventional low-power electronics and controlled by inexpensive and commercially available microcontrollers. Simple Summary: In breast cancer, there is a high degree of variability in tumors and the surrounding tissue called the tumor microenvironment (TME). To better understand tumor biology and metastasis, as well as to predict response to cancer treatments or the course of the disease, it is important to characterize molecular diversity in the breast TME. The GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler (DSP) enables researchers to spatially analyze proteins and RNA transcripts in tumors and surrounding tissues from patients or preclinical models. Using the GeoMx DSP, protein expression and RNA transcripts in the distinct regions of a tumor can be quantified up to and including the whole transcriptome level. Herein, the GeoMx Breast Cancer Consortium presents best practices for GeoMx spatial profiling of tumors to promote the collection of high-quality data, optimization of data analysis and integration of datasets to accelerate biomarker discovery. These best practices can also be applied to any tumor type to provide information about the tumor and the TME. Breast cancer is a heterogenous disease with variability in tumor cells and in the surrounding tumor microenvironment (TME). Understanding the molecular diversity in breast cancer is critical for improving prediction of therapeutic response and prognostication. High-plex spatial profiling of tumors enables characterization of heterogeneity in the breast TME, which can holistically illuminate the biology of tumor growth, dissemination and, ultimately, response to therapy. The GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler (DSP) enables researchers to spatially resolve and quantify proteins and RNA transcripts from tissue sections. The platform is compatible with both formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues. RNA profiling was developed at the whole transcriptome level for human and mouse samples and protein profiling of 100-plex for human samples. Tissue can be optically segmented for analysis of regions of interest or cell populations to study biology-directed tissue characterization. The GeoMx Breast Cancer Consortium (GBCC) is composed of breast cancer researchers who are developing innovative approaches for spatial profiling to accelerate biomarker discovery. Here, the GBCC presents best practices for GeoMx profiling to promote the collection of high-quality data, optimization of data analysis and integration of datasets to advance collaboration and meta-analyses. Peritectic compound Li4(OH)3Br has been recently proposed as phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage (TES) applications at approx. 300 °C Compared to competitor PCM materials (e.g., sodium nitrate), the main assets of this compound are high volumetric latent heat storage capacity (>140 kWh/m3) and very low volume changes (<3%) during peritectic reaction and melting. The objective of the present work was to find proper supporting materials able to shape stabilize Li4(OH)3Br during the formation of the melt and after its complete melting, avoiding any leakage and thus obtaining a composite apparently always in the solid state during the charge and discharge of the TES material. Micro-nanoparticles of MgO, Fe2O3, CuO, SiO2 and Al2O3 have been considered as candidate supporting materials combined with the cold-compression route for shape-stabilized composites preparation. The work carried out allowed for the identification of the most promising composite based on MgO nanoparticles through a deep experimental analysis and characterization, including chemical compatibility tests, anti-leakage performance evaluation, structural and thermodynamic properties analysis and preliminary cycling stability study. Transition metal complexes with β-diketonate and diamine ligands are valuable precursors for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of metal oxide nanomaterials, but the metal-ligand bond dissociation mechanism on the growth surface is not yet clarified in detail. We address this question by density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) in combination with the Blue Moon (BM) statistical sampling approach. AIMD simulations of the Zn β-diketonate-diamine complex Zn(hfa)2TMEDA (hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate; TMEDA = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine), an amenable precursor for the CVD of ZnO nanosystems, show that rolling diffusion of this precursor at 500 K on a hydroxylated silica slab leads to an octahedral-to-square pyramidal rearrangement of its molecular geometry. The free energy profile of the octahedral-to-square pyramidal conversion indicates that the process barrier (5.8 kcal/mol) is of the order of magnitude of the thermal energy at the operating temperature. The formation of hydrogen bonds with surface hydroxyl groups plays a key role in aiding the dissociation of a Zn-O bond. In the square-pyramidal complex, the Zn center has a free coordination position, which might promote the interaction with incoming reagents on the deposition surface. These results provide a valuable atomistic insight on the molecule-to-material conversion process which, in perspective, might help to tailor by design the first nucleation stages of the target ZnO-based nanostructures. The design of functional foods has grown recently as an answer to rising consumers' concerns and demands for natural, nutritional and healthy food products. Nanoencapsulation is a technique based on enclosing a bioactive compound (BAC) in liquid, solid or gaseous states within a matrix or inert material for preserving the coated substance (food or flavor molecules/ingredients). Nanoencapsulation can improve stability of BACs, improving the regulation of their release at physiologically active sites. Regarding materials for food and nutraceutical applications, the most used are carbohydrate-, protein- or lipid-based alternatives such as chitosan, peptide–chitosan and β-lactoglobulin nanoparticles (NPs) or emulsion biopolymer complexes. On the other hand, the main BACs used in foods for health promoting, including antioxidants, antimicrobials, vitamins, probiotics and prebiotics and others (minerals, enzymes and flavoring compounds). Functional materials are promising candidates for application in structural health monitoring/self-healing composites, wearable systems (smart textiles), robotics, and next-generation electronics. Any improvement in these topics would be of great relevance to industry, environment, and global needs for energy sustainability. Taking into consideration all these aspects, low-cost fabrication of electrical functionalities on the outer surface of carbon-nanotube/polypropylene composites is presented in this paper. Electrical-responsive regions and conductive tracks, made of an accumulation layer of carbon nanotubes without the use of metals, have been obtained by the laser irradiation process, leading to confined polymer melting/vaporization with consequent local increase of the nanotube concentration over the electrical percolation threshold. Interestingly, by combining different investigation methods, including thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, scanning electron and atomic force microscopies (SEM, AFM), and Raman spectroscopy, the electrical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube/polypropylene (MWCNT/PP) composites have been elucidated to unfold their potentials under static and dynamic conditions. More interestingly, prototypes made of simple components and electronic circuits (resistor, touch-sensitive devices), where conventional components have been substituted by the carbon nanotube networks, are shown. Conventional chemotherapies used for breast cancer (BC) treatment are non-selective, attacking both healthy and cancerous cells. Therefore, new technologies that enhance drug efficacy and ameliorate the off-target toxic effects exhibited by currently used anticancer drugs are urgently needed. Here we report the design and synthesis of novel mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) equipped with the hormonal drug tamoxifen (TAM) to facilitate guidance towards estrogen receptors (ERs) which are upregulated in breast tumours. TAM is linked to the MSNs using a poly-ʟ-histidine (PLH) polymer as a pH-sensitive gatekeeper, to ensure efficient delivery of encapsulated materials within the pores. XRD, HR-TEM, DLS, SEM, FT-IR and BET techniques were used to confirm the successful fabrication of MSNs. The MSNs have a high surface area (>1000 m2/g); and a mean particle size of 150 nm, which is an appropriate size to allow the penetration of premature blood vessels surrounding breast tumours. Successful surface functionalization was supported by FT-IR, XPS and TGA techniques, with a grafting ratio of approximately 29%. In recent years, researchers focused their attention on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) owing to the considerable advancements of the characterization methods, especially electron microscopy methods, which allowed for a clear visualization of the pore structure and the materials encapsulated within the pores, along with the X-ray diffraction (small angles) methods and specific surface area determination by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) technique. Mesoporous silica gained important consideration in biomedical applications thanks to its tunable pore size, high surface area, surface functionalization possibility, chemical stability, and pore nature. Specifically, the nature of the pores allows for the encapsulation and release of anti-cancer drugs into tumor tissues, which makes MSN ideal candidates as drug delivery carriers in cancer treatment. Moreover, the inner and outer surfaces of the MSN provide a platform for further functionalization approaches that could enhance the adsorption of the drug within the silica network and the selective targeting and controlled release to the desired site. Additionally, stimuli-responsive mesoporous silica systems are being used as mediators in cancer therapy, and through the release of the therapeutic agents hosted inside the pores under the action of specific triggering factors, it can selectively deliver them into tumor tissues. Another important application of the mesoporous silica nanomaterials is related to its ability to extract different hazardous species from aqueous media, some of these agents being antibiotics, pesticides, or anti-tumor agents. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the methods of MSN synthesis and related characteristics, the available surface functionalization strategies, and the most important applications of MSN in adsorption as well as release studies. Owing to the increasing antibiotic resistance, the need for developing materials for antibiotic removal from wastewaters is important and mesoporous materials already proved remarkable performances in environmental applications, including removal or even degradation of hazardous agents such as antibiotics and pesticides. Polypropylene (PP) / multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing and used to manufacture samples by injection molding. The effect of processing conditions on the crystallinity and electrical resistivity was studied. Accordingly, samples were produced varying the mold temperature and injection rate, and the DC electrical resistivity was measured. The morphology of MWCNT clusters was studied by optical and electron microscopy, while X-ray diffraction was used to study the role of the crystalline structure of PP. As a result, an anisotropic electrical behavior induced by the process was observed, which is further influenced by the injection molding processing condition. It was demonstrated that a reduction of electrical resistivity can be obtained by increasing mold temperature and injection rate, which was associated to the formation of the γ-phase and the related inter-cluster morphology of the MWCNT conductive network. Functionalized Tris[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl] amine (Me6TREN) ligands tethered-Fe3O4@Me6TREN nanoparticles (NPs) with a size of 150 nm were prepared to achieve classified and easy recovery of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The preparation of such NPs related to sequential silane ligand exchange and a following cure and Schiff base reactions for Fe3O4 NPs. Fe3O4@Me6TREN NPs as an effective nano-adsorbent of heavy metals exhibited significant differences in maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(III) (61.4 mg/g), Cu(II) (245.0 mg/g), Pb(II) (5.3 mg/g), and Cd(II) (1136.2 mg/g), in favor of classified removal of heavy metals from wastewater. Furthermore, Fe3O4@Me6TREN NPs can be regenerated by desorbing metal ions from NP surfaces eluted with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-Na2) aqueous, which endows such NPs promising potency as new nano-vectors for the removal of heavy metals. Magnetic structures have attracted a great interest due to their multiple applications, from physics to biomedicine. Several techniques are currently employed to investigate magnetic characteristics and other physicochemical properties of magnetic structures. The major objective of this review is to summarize the current knowledge on the usage, advances, advantages, and disadvantages of a large number of techniques that are currently available to characterize magnetic systems. The present review, aiming at helping in the choice of the most suitable method as appropriate, is divided into three sections dedicated to characterization techniques. Firstly, the magnetism and magnetization (hysteresis) techniques are introduced. Secondly, the visualization methods of the domain structures by means of different probes are illustrated. Lastly, the characterization of magnetic nanosystems in view of possible biomedical applications is discussed, including the exploitation of magnetism in imaging for cell tracking/visualization of pathological alterations in living systems (mainly by magnetic resonance imaging, MRI). This paper reports the synthesis of Fe-titanate nanotubes by means of the conventional ion-exchange method with iron nitrate solutions. As the iron-rich nanotubes were found to contain the catalyst precursor intrinsically dispersed in their structures, the unprecedented possibility of using this kind of materials for building carbon nanostructures, firmly attached at the surface of the forming TiO2 nanoparticles, was verified. The catalytic decomposition of ethylene, used as a carbon source, was performed at a relatively high temperature (750 °C) when the nanotubes undergo an irreversible phase transformation to form anatase and rutile nanoparticles. Due to the different amounts of Fe ions in the nanotubes, distinct types of carbon/TiO2 hybrid interfaces were formed, ranging from amorphous (lower Fe3+ concentration) to the more crystalline graphitic domains (higher Fe3+ concentrations), as documented by the microstructure of the treated samples. Tailor-made nanostructured ZnO cages have been catalytically grown on Au and Pt films covering silicon substrates, by a controlled evaporation process, which means an accurate choice of temperatures, times, gas flows (He in the heating, He/air during the synthesis), and Au/Pt film thickness. The effect of the process parameters affecting the morphology and the structure of the obtained materials has been investigated by XRD analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) microscopies, and FTIR spectroscopies. In particular, the role of the synthesis temperature in affecting the size and shape of the obtained ZnO cages has been highlighted. It will be shown that by adopting higher temperatures, the protruding nanowhiskers several microns in length, covering the cages and exhibiting both basal and prismatic faces, change into very thin and narrow structures, with extended prismatic faces, prevailing with respect to the basal ones. At an even higher process temperature, the building up of Au particles aggregates inside and/or anchored to the walls of the hollow cages, without any evidence of elongated ZnO nanostructures will be highlighted. S-doped TiO2 and hybrid MoS2/TiO2 systems have been synthesized, via the sulfidation with H2S of the bare TiO2 and of MoOx supported on TiO2 systems, with the aim of enhancing the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 for the degradation of carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant drug, whose residues and metabolites are usually inefficiently removed in wastewater treatment plants. The focus of this study is to find a relationship between the morphology/structure/surface properties and photoactivity. The full characterization of samples reveals the strong effects of the H2S action on the properties of TiO2, with the formation of defects at the surface, as shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), while also the optical properties are strongly affected by the sulfidation treatment, with changes in the electronic states of TiO2. Meanwhile, the formation of small and thin few-layer MoS2 domains, decorating the TiO2 surface, is evidenced by both high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and UV-Vis/Raman spectroscopies, while Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra give insights into the nature of Ti and Mo surface sites. The most interesting findings of our research are the enhanced photoactivity of the MoS2/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst toward the carbamazepine mineralization. Surprisingly, the formation of hazardous compounds (i.e., acridine derivatives), usually obtained from carbamazepine, is precluded when treated with MoS2/TiO2 systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
