Vibration of manufacturing machine parts can be reduced by applying CFRP to precision machines. Recently, the use of 3D printers in manufacturing has increased. However, there are few studies on the vibration characteristics of 3D printed composite materials. The objective of this study is to analyze the vibration reduction effect of a 3D printed composite material used as a CFRP chuck adapter. The existing chuck adapter is made of steel. In this study, the vibration values for three types of CFRP, steel, and CFRP with steel chuck adapters are compared. The products were rotated at 10, 500, and 1000 rpm, and the vibration velocity and displacement were calculated as an average value after repeating each measurement 5 times. Vibration velocity was improved by up to 64% and displacement by up to 31.1%. These results can be usefully applied to other mechanical parts requiring vibration damping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) have good physical properties, such as high specific strength and high specific modulus. However, cutting delamination, tearing and burr, etc. often occur in the machining process of CFRP, which results in the uncontrollability of machining surface quality and serious tool wear. In this paper, milling of CFRP with a staggered cutter was carried out, the cutting-edge radius was investigated in order to characterize the tool wear; the effect of the cutting-edge wear radius on the milling force and surface quality was found, and the formation mechanisms of the 3D surface topography and surface defects were analyzed under the wear state. Experimental results showed that the wear of the staggered PCD cutter was mainly concentrated in the cutting-edge area. With the increase in milling length, the radius of cutting edge gradually became largeer under the action of abrasive wear mechanism, and the flank wear was not obvious. With the intension of tool wear, milling force gradually increased and the machining surface quality of the CFRP deteriorated distinctly, i.e., defects such as bare fiber fracture, groove and hole appeared, and burrs were gradually generated on the workpiece surface. Finally, through a comparative analysis of cutting performance, it was found that the staggered PCD cutter possessed better performance for wear resistance and burr suppression than the straight-teeth cutter. Machined surface quality determines the reliability, wear resistance and service life of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) workpieces. In this work, the formation mechanism of the surface topography and the machining defects of CFRPs are proposed, and the influence of milling parameters and fiber cutting angles on the surface quality of CFRPs is obtained, which can provide a reference for extended tool life and good surface quality. Trimming and slot milling tests of unidirectional CFRP laminates are performed. The surface roughness of the machined surface is measured, and the influence of milling parameters on the surface roughness is analyzed. A regression model for the surface roughness of CFRP milling is established. A significance test of the regression model is conducted. The machined surface topography of milling CFRP unidirectional laminates with different fiber orientations is analyzed, and the effect of fiber cutting angle on the surface topography of the machined surface is presented by using a digital super depth-of-field microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). To study the influence of fiber cutting angle on machining defects, the machined topography under different fiber orientations is analyzed. Welding and riveting hybrid bonding technology was applied to join 6061 aluminum alloy and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). The laser-arc hybrid welding process and stepped rivets were used in the experiments to reduce the impact of the poor heat resistance of composites. The effect of hybrid welding arc current on the formation and mechanical properties of 6061 Al/CFRP joints was studied. Tensile shear load up to 4.65 kN was achieved by adjusting process parameters. The welding process and mode of the fracture were analyzed. The hybrid bonded joint obtained consisted of two parts: a welded joint of Al plate and Al rivet, and a bonded interface between Al plate and CFRP plate. The mechanical properties of the hybrid joint were mainly determined by the Al plate/Al rivet welded joint. The results of the study show that there are three interfacial bonding mechanisms between aluminum and CFRP. In addition to mechanical bonding between the Al plate and CFRP plate, there were also metallurgical bonding of Al-Mg intermetallic compounds with resin matrix and chemical reactions of aluminum with resin and carbon fibers at the interface, which could improve the mechanical properties of the joints. The additive manufacturing (AM) of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites continue to grow due to the attractive strength-to-weight and modulus-to-weight ratios afforded by the composites combined with the ease of processibility achievable through the AM technique. Short fiber design factors such as fiber content effects have been shown to play determinant roles in the mechanical performance of AM fabricated CFRP composites. However, this has only been investigated for tensile and flexural properties, with no investigations to date on compressive properties effects of fiber content. This study examined the axial and transverse compressive properties of AM fabricated CFRP composites by testing CF-ABS with fiber contents from 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% for samples printed in the axial and transverse build orientations, and for axial tensile in comparison to the axial compression properties. The results were that increasing carbon fiber content for the short-fiber thermoplastic CFRP composites slightly reduced compressive strength and modulus. However, it increased ductility and toughness. The 20% carbon fiber content provided the overall content with the most decent compressive properties for the 0–30% content studied. The AM fabricated composite demonstrates a generally higher compressive property than tensile property because of the higher plastic deformation ability which characterizes compression loaded parts, which were observed from the different failure modes. Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are widely used in aerospace and new energy vehicles due to their high specific strength and flexible design ability. At present, the traditional forming process of CFRP curved surface components has problems of low mechanical properties and long processing time. In this paper, a new method of hot gas forming was proposed to obtain CFRP components. By applying high temperature and high-pressure gas on one side of CFRP, the material was forced to deform and solidify at the same time. A special device for hot gas forming was designed and developed. The curing behavior and mechanical properties of original CFRP plates were studied. The main defects and the corresponding control methods of hot gas forming parts were analyzed by forming spherical parts, and the feasibility of the hot gas forming process was verified. Taking the battery cover plate of a new energy vehicle as the research object, the influence of forming temperature, gas pressure, pressurization rate and other process parameters on the mechanical properties of complex CFRP components were analyzed. The mechanism of both strength and efficiency improvement was analyzed. The results showed that with the increasing of gas pressure, the tensile strength and forming efficiency of the CFRP curved components were improved obviously. Under reasonable forming parameters, the tensile strength of the obtained parts was increased by 37%, and the forming efficiency was increased by 58%. The fiber bundles were distributed more evenly and compactly under the hot gas forming. This showed that the use of hot gas forming had good potential in the preparation of high-performance CFRP parts, which was helpful to improve the processing efficiency and forming quality of CFRP curved parts in the aerospace and new energy automotive fields. Microwave curing technology, which has seen increased commercialization recently due to its ability to cut the curing time and ensure high quality, requires an understanding of the curing characteristics of composite materials of varying thickness. Therefore, this study aimed to perform cure monitoring to evaluate the effects of variations in thickness on the quality of microwave curing. For this study, a fiber Bragg grating sensor was used to measure temperature changes in specimens during the curing cycle for cure monitoring which is generally used for optimization of the curing cycle; then, the time taken for temperature increase and overshoot of the specimen, and the times at which the specimen thickness varied, were quantitatively evaluated. Testing confirmed that microwave curing reduced the curing time in the sections in which the temperature rose; also, the specimen thickness caused overshoot of up to approximately 40 °C at the side, which can affect the curing quality of the composite materials. Furthermore, voids were observed on the side of all specimens. The results indicated that, in order to improve the quality of microwave curing of composite materials, the curing cycle should be optimized by considering the characteristics of the microwave curing equipment. A liquid nitrogen cooling system was developed to ensure the successful ultrasonic testing of composite materials to characterize the very High Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). The fatigue failure of CFRP occurs even in the very high cycle range and there is no traditional fatigue limit. The S–N curve of the CFRP presents a step whose characteristics appear in the transition between high cycle and very high cycle fatigue. The damage evolution of CFRP in the same field of view is investigated. The morphology of damaged CFRP composites under ultrasonic loading is described by three characteristics: matrix damage at the intersection of fiber bundles, near fiber bundle parallel section matrix cavity and matrix penetration. With the increasing of cycles, the damage process is also presented in turn according to these three characteristics. The post-fatigue bending modulus changed significantly from the pre-fatigue values, indicating that the VHCF had a considerable impact on the mechanical properties of the composite. In high-speed precision machining, thermal deformation caused by temperature rise affects the accuracy stability of the machine tool to a significant extent. In order to reduce the thermal deformation of ball screws and improve the accuracy, a new adaptive method based on carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) was proposed in this study and the thermal deformation of ball screws was determined. By using the sequential coupling method, the thermal–structural coupling analysis of a ball screw was conducted based on the finite element method (FEM). The analysis results were verified through a comparison with the experimental results. Based on the verification, an FE model of the improved ball screw was established to study its thermal characteristics. The key design parameters of the improved ball screw were optimized based on the Kriging model and genetic algorithm (GA). The thermal reduction effect of the improved ball screw was validated through the experimental results. The results indicate that the adaptive method proposed in this research is effective in reducing the thermal deformation of ball screws. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Standard Compression-After-Impact test devices show a weakening effect on thin-walled specimens due to a free panel edge that is required for compression. As a result, thin-walled undamaged samples do not break in the free measuring area but near the free edge and along the supports. They also show a strength reduction due to the free edge which can become potentially relevant for very weakly damaged panels. In order to reduce the free edge influence on the measured strength, a modified Compression-After-Impact test device has been developed. In an experimental investigation with carbon fiber reinforced plastics, the modified device is compared with a standard device. It is shown that thin-walled undamaged specimens investigated with the modified device now mainly break within the free measuring area and no longer at the free edge and along the bearings as it is the case for standard test devices. The modified device does not cause a free edge weakening effect in comparison to standard devices. The modified device is therefore more suitable for determining the compression strengths of undamaged thin-walled composite plates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
