Tomatoes are one of the most important vegetables in every home, especially in South Asian countries, used as a vegetable, ketchup, and condiment in many kitchen recipes. It is a good source of calcium, potassium, folate, vitamin A, vitamin K, and lycopene, which are beneficial for the human body and protect it against different diseases. Nutrient management is a key factor for the best quality production of tomato fruit. The present study was conducted to compare the efficiency of different calcium salts (calcium sulphate, calcium carbonate, calcium nitrate, and calcium chloride) in improving the growth, yield, and other quality-related parameters of tomatoes. A single field experiment was conducted and laid out according to the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with a single factor in the field and a Complete Randomized Design (CRD)) for postharvest fruit storage. The results obtained from this experiment suggest that plants treated with 2% calcium chloride solution exhibited the greatest plant height (85.27 cm), number of leaves (221), yield per plant (2.3 kg), ascorbate peroxidase (290.75 m mol s−1 kg−1), superoxide dismutase (7.13 m mol s−1 kg−1), catalase (18.74 m mol s−1 kg−1), total phenolics (2.44 mg g−1), and β carotene (0.48 µg g−1). During postharvest storage, the maximum shelf life (18 days), minimum disease incidence (4.78%), weight loss (6.61%), and ethylene production (119.6 µL C2H4 kg−1h−1) rate were also observed in calcium-treated fruits. Magnolia wufengensis, a newly discovered ornamental species in the Magnoliaceae family, is susceptible to salinity. Moreover, Ca2+ is an essential element for plant growth and is receiving increasing attention for its ability to mitigate the negative effects of environmental stress on plants. In the present study, we investigated the effect of Ca2+ on the growth and transcriptome of M. wufengensis under salt stress. The treatments used here were as follows: control, NaCl (150 mmol/L), CaCl2 (5 mmol/L), and NaCl (150 mmol/L) + CaCl2 (5 mmol/L). After a 60-day treatment period, plant growth indices were determined, and leaves were collected for physiological analysis and transcriptome investigation. The combined application of NaCl and CaCl2 alleviated phenotypic damage and restored seedling growth. Moreover, RNA sequencing data revealed that in the Na vs. control group and the NaCa vs. Na group, there were 968 and 2632 differentially expressed genes, respectively, which were both primarily enriched in secondary metabolism, glutathione metabolism, signaling hormone metabolism, glucose metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. These pathways were analyzed to screen key genes: the adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding cassette efflux transporter G1 (ABCG1) genes, which are related to transmembrane transport; the calmodulin genes, which are related to signal transmission; and the glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and peroxidase (POD) genes related to antioxidant enzymes. Lastly, we constructed a hypothesis model of Ca2+-enhanced salt tolerance in M. wufengensis. This study reveals the potential mechanisms by which Ca2+ enhances the salt tolerance of M. wufengensis and provides a theoretical reference for its cultivation in saline areas. Salinity stress severely restricts rice growth. Prohexadione calcium (Pro-Ca) modulation can effectively alleviate salt stress in rice. In this study, we explored the effects of Pro-Ca on enhancing salt tolerance in two rice varieties, IR29 and HD96-1. The results revealed that Pro-Ca markedly enhanced root and shoot morphological traits and improved plant biomass under salt stress. Chlorophyll a and b content were significantly increased, which improved photosynthetic capacity. Transcriptomic and metabolomic data showed that Pro-Ca significantly up-regulated the expression of genes involved in E3 ubiquitin ligases in IR29 and HD96-1 by 2.5-fold and 3-fold, respectively, thereby maintaining Na+ and K+ homeostasis by reducing Na+. Moreover, Pro-Ca treatment significantly down-regulated the expression of Lhcb1, Lhcb2, Lhcb3, Lhcb5, and Lhcb6 in IR29 under salt stress, which led to an increase in photosynthetic efficiency. Furthermore, salt stress + Pro-Ca significantly increased the A-AAR of IR29 and HD96-1 by 2.9-fold and 2.5-fold, respectively, and inhibited endogenous cytokinin synthesis and signal transduction, which promoted root growth. The current findings suggested that Pro-Ca effectively alleviated the harmful effects of salt stress on rice by maintaining abscisic acid content and by promoting oxylipin synthesis. In this study, the protein and salts distribution (Ca, P, Na and Mg) in processed cheese (PC) samples prepared with 180 or 360 mEq/kg of the calcium sequestering salts (CSS) disodium phosphate (DSP), disodium pyrophosphate (DSPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and trisodium citrate (TSC) was studied. For this purpose, a water-soluble extract (WSE) of PC samples was prepared. All PC samples contained 45–46% moisture, 26–27% fat and 20–21% protein and had a pH of 5.2 or 5.7. Ultracentrifugation slightly reduced the protein content of the WSE of PC, indicating that most protein in the WSE was non-sedimentable. At equal concentration of CSS, the protein content of the WSE was higher for PC at pH 5.7 compared to PC at pH 5.2. Approximately 55–85% of the Ca and P in the WSE of samples was 10 kDa-permeable for PC prepared with DSPP and SHMP. This suggests that the formation of non-permeable Ca–polyphosphate–casein complexes. For PC prepared with TSC, >90% of Ca in the WSE was 10 kDa-permeable, indicating that micellar disruption arises from sequestration of micellar Ca. These results indicate that the WSE method is an appropriate method to understand how salts present in PC are distributed. However, the WSE and ultracentrifugal supernatant of the WSE can include both soluble and protein-associated salts. Cheese powder is a product resulting from the removal of moisture from cheese. At first, cheese emulsion is prepared by dissolving cheese(s) with water and calcium sequestering salts followed by drying. The desirable characteristics of cheese powder are high solubility, no lumps, storage stability, and imparting a typical cheesy flavor to the final product. Many current studies on cheese powder are focused on reducing calcium-sequestering salts (CSSs) to reduce the sodium content of cheese powder. This review discusses the production processes and physio-chemical properties of cheese emulsions and powders, aiming to enhance current understanding and identifying potential research gaps. Furthermore, strategies for producing cheese powder without CSSs, including pH adjustment, homogenization, and addition of dairy components such as buttermilk powder and sodium caseinate, are elaborated upon. Processing variables such as heating conditions during the preparation of cheese emulsion may vary with the type and age of the cheese used and product formulation. These conditions also effect the characteristics of cheese powders. On the other hand, producing a stable cheese emulsion without CSSs is challenging due to impaired emulsification of fat. The combined use of buttermilk powder and sodium caseinate among various alternatives has shown promising results in producing cheese powder without CSSs. However, future research on replacing CSSs should focus on combining two or more strategies together to produce cheese powder without CSSs. Atorvastatin (ATV) is a well-established lipid-lowering agent. ATV has two stereogenic centers, and of the four possible stereoisomers, only the (3R,5R) form is used therapeutically. The European Pharmacopoeia (EP) monograph 2022 for ATV calcium salt describes a normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of enantiomeric purity in both drug substance and working standard samples, based on a 150 mm × 4.6 mm Chiralpak AD-H column. The main problems with this method are the very long analysis time and the high solvent consumption. Here, an alternative chromatographic protocol was developed using the Chiralpak AD-3 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm) packed with 3 μm silica particles instead of the 5 μm silica particles of the Chiralpak AD-H chiral stationary phase and characterized by the same polysaccharide selector, amylose-tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate). Using a mobile phase consisting of a mixture of n-hexane-ethanol-formic acid 90:10:0.1 (v/v/v) as the mobile phase and setting the flow rate and column temperature to 1.0 mL min−1 and 35 °C, respectively, a simultaneous stereo-selective separation was achieved within 35 min without observing any overlap between the enantiomeric impurity peak and peaks related to other ATV impurities. Compared to HPLC EP conditions, the analysis time to elute all the potentially related substances was faster and significantly less mobile phase volume was required. The linearity of the method has been demonstrated in the range of 4.4 μg mL−1 to 1000 μg mL−1 (R2 > 0.999). At a concentration of 4.4 μg mL−1, which is 0.075% of the test solution (5.8 mg mL−1, as ATV free acid), the signal-to-noise ratio was found to be 20. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calcium phosphate (Ca–P) coatings provide an effective approach in current research and the clinical application of Mg alloys by endowing them with improved corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and even bioactivity. Ca-containing coatings were prepared on AZ31B magnesium alloys using the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique and a combination of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid calcium disodium (EDTA–Ca), calcium glycerophosphate (GP–Ca), calcium gluconate (CaGlu2), and calcium lactate (CaLac2) as the Ca source in a near-neutral solution. The respective and mutual impacts of the four calcium salts on the formation and properties of the coatings were investigated. Experimental results indicated that GP–Ca was more decisive than EDTA–Ca, CaGlu2, and CaLac2 in the formation, morphology, and, therefore, the corrosion resistance of the coatings. GP–Ca alone could not effectively incorporate Ca2+ ions into the coatings but it could combine with EDTA–Ca, CaGlu2, and CaLac2 to bring a synergistic effect in improving the Ca content of the coatings. The bifunctional structure of CaGlu2 and CaLac2, containing hydroxyl groups and carboxylic groups with anchoring effects, enabled them to enhance the Ca content of the coatings. However, due to minor differences in functional group orientation, CaGlu2 was a little more efficient than CaLac2 in increasing Ca content, while CaLac2 was a little more efficient than CaGlu2 in improving the corrosion resistance of the coatings. Finally, the total concentration of the four calcium salts, [Ca2+]T, should be controlled at a proper level; otherwise, excessively high [Ca2+]T would produce localized microbumps originating from coating ablation, eventually deteriorating the corrosion resistance of the coatings. This paper examined how the amount (5% or 20%) and type (CaSO4 or Na2SO4) of sulphate salt affect the hydration of calcium sulphoaluminate clinker (KCSA). The mechanical behavior of the pastes was determined at 1, 3, 28, and 90 days, the heat flow and total heat were measured with isothermal conduction calorimetry, and the reaction products were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry (DTA/TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained indicated that both the amount of sulphate salt (5% or 20%) and its type (CaSO4 or Na2SO4) affect the hydration kinetics, type of reaction products formed, and development of mechanical strength. The incorporation of CaSO4 has a positive effect on the development of the mechanical strength of KCSA. However, Na2SO4 can also produce adverse side effects at older ages. The presence of Na2SO4 increases pH values, which partly destabilizes the ettringite formed, thereby favoring carbonation and thenardite precipitation, which can cause the specimens to crack and break. Composite powders were synthesized from the water solutions of sodium silicate and different calcium salts (nitrate, chloride, and acetate) at a Ca/Si molar ratio of 1.0. According to the XRD data, all the synthesized powders included hydrated calcium silicate Ca1,5SiO3,5·xH2O (Ca/Si molar ratio = 1.5) and calcium carbonate CaCO3 (Ca/Si molar ratio = ∞). The presence of H2SiO3 or SiO2·xH2O in the synthesized powders was assumed to be due to the difference between the Ca/Si molar ratio of 1.0 specified by the synthesis protocol and the molar ratio of the detected products. Reaction by-products (sodium nitrate NaNO3, sodium chloride NaCl, and sodium acetate NaCH3COO) were also found in the synthesized powders after filtration and drying. According to the XRD data phase composition of all powders after washing four times consisted of the quasi-amorphous phase and calcium carbonate in the form of calcite. Calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite was detected in powders synthesized from calcium chloride CaCl2 and calcium nitrate Ca(NO3)2 before and after washing. Synthesized powders containing reaction by-products and washed powders were used for the preparation of ceramics at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C. The phase composition of the ceramic samples prepared from the washed powders and powder containing NaCl after firing at 900 and 1000 °C consisted of β-wollastonite β-CaSiO3, and, after firing at 1100 °C, consisted of both β-wollastonite β-CaSiO3 and pseudo-wollastonite α-CaSiO3. The phase composition of the ceramic samples prepared from powders containing sodium nitrate NaNO3 and sodium acetate NaCH3COO after firing at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C consisted of calcium sodium silicates, i.e., Na2Ca2Si3O9 (combeite) and Na2Ca3Si2O8. Synthesized and washed composite powders can be used for the preparation of biocompatible materials, in the technology of construction materials, and as components of lunar soil simulants. Different sands have significant influences on MICP reinforcement effects. Using calcium carbonate production and bioflocculation lag period as evaluation criteria, this study investigates the optimal theoretical pH values of bacterial solutions with different concentrations. We reinforced four different sands using MICP at the optimal theoretical pH, and based on permeability, moisture retention, raindrop erosion, wind erosion, penetration, and SEM tests, the influence of sand properties on low-pH MICP reinforcement was analyzed and the low-pH MICP mechanism was revealed. The results indicate the following: (1) The optimal theoretical pH values for bacterial solutions with concentrations of 0.67 × 108 cells/mL, 3 × 108 cells/mL, and 10 × 108 cells/mL are 4.5, 3, and 4, respectively. (2) With 0.67 × 108, 3 × 108, and 10 × 108 cells/mL bacterial solutions, the strength of tailings sand containing calcium salt was 21.15%, 44.42%, and 13.61% higher than that of quartz sand, respectively. The effective reinforcement depth of alkaline reclaimed sand was 10, 8, and 6 mm lower than that of neutral calcareous sand, respectively. The strength of fine tailings sand was 70.41%, 58.04%, and 22.6% higher than that of coarse reclaimed sand. The effective reinforcement depth of fine quartz sand was 6, 4, and 4 mm lower than that of coarse calcareous sand. (3) Low pH temporarily suppresses urease activity, delaying calcium carbonate flocculation and enhancing reinforcement uniformity. High salinity severely inhibits plant seedling root development and metabolism. Although plant salt tolerance can be improved by exogenous calcium supplementation, the metabolism molecular mechanisms involved remain unclear. In this study, we integrated three types of omics data (transcriptome, metabolome, and phytohormone absolute quantification) to analyze the metabolic profiles of peanut seedling roots as regulated by exogenous calcium under salt stress. (1) exogenous calcium supplementation enhanced the allocation of carbohydrates to the TCA cycle and plant cell wall biosynthesis rather than the shikimate pathway influenced by up-regulating the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes under salt stress; (2) exogenous calcium induced further ABA accumulation under salt stress by up-regulating the gene expression of ABA biosynthesis key enzymes AAO2 and AAO3 while down-regulating ABA glycosylation enzyme UGT71C5 expression; (3) exogenous calcium supplementation under salt stress restored the trans-zeatin absolute content to unstressed levels while inhibiting the root cis-zeatin biosynthesis. Background: White brined cheese is one of the most frequently consumed cheeses that is accepted among a large group of consumers, which is largely related to its unique sensory properties, which are characterized by specific technological processes including ripening in the brine. Thus, white brined cheese contains a high amount of NaCl, and frequent consumption might lead to excessive sodium intake, which nowadays, presents a global problem. Consequently, food industries have developed reduced sodium products by substitutional salts. Furthermore, various studies have indicated that increased sodium intake via the diet can be associated with cardiovascular diseases, a risk of digestive system cancer, obesity, and other conditions. Calcium salts (citrate and lactate) are safe for human health and can be added to various foods according to the quantum satis rule. The present study aimed to partially replace NaCl with Ca-citrate and Ca-lactate in proportions of 25% and 50%. Additionally, the study presents the possibility of applying Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models for the prediction of some brine and cheese properties. Methods: White brined cheese with substitutional salts in brine (25% and 50% Ca-citrate and 25% and 50% Ca-lactate) were produced and compared to the control cheese ripened in conventionally applied NaCl brine. The acidity, total dissolved solids, salt amount, conductivity, color, and textural and sensory properties were determined over the 28 days of cold storage. Results: The substitution of NaCl with Ca-citrate and Ca-lactate is promising for sodium reduction in white brined cheese, whereby the physical and chemical properties remain acceptable. The best sensory score gain occurred with a substitution of 25% NaCl with Ca-citrate. Furthermore, ANN models can be employed to predict brine and cheese properties during storage. Black olive has become one of the most prestigious olives processed in the olive industry, and its processing has been increased recently in different countries. The firmness of black olives may be changed by the processing methods, fermentation, and solution salts. In this study, the employment of CaCl2, Ca-acetate, and Ca-lactate during the processing of some Iranian black olive cultivars, including Mari, Zard, Rowghani, Shengeh, Dakal, Dezful, and Fishomi, was evaluated in terms of physicochemical and phenolic compounds and textural attributes. The results showed that Ca-lactate improved the firmness of the Mari cultivar from 1455 to 1765 N/100 g in the pitted olive, and the same trend was obtained for the other cultivars. Ca-acetate improved the black shiny color of the Mari cultivar from 4.36 to 4.85 and the sensorial properties of the black olives, including gustatory and kinesthetic sensations, were improved by using a Ca-lactate solution. The application of calcium salts in the salt-free preservation solutions imparted neither bitterness to the olives nor discoloration. The highest amounts of acid (1.42–1.56%), fructose to mannitol ratio (1–1.2), and phenolic compounds (955–963 mg/kg) were found for the Zard cultivar. Furthermore, the residual content of oleuropein was higher when CaCl2 was employed (357 mg/kg). All of the calcium salts improved the firmness of the black olives, although the maximum firmness was observed for the Ca-lactate. Consequently, the formation of a black shiny color is related to the diffusion of phenolic compounds; however, this needs further investigation to determine which kind of phenolic compound is responsible for its black color. This study examined the physicochemical effects of the fortification of noodles with 0.25–1.00% (w/w) calcium salts, viz. calcium acetate, calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, and calcium lactate. Fortification with calcium citrate, calcium acetate, and calcium carbonate increased the pH and breaking force of the dried noodles. However, the fortification of noodles with any concentration of calcium did not increase the extent of elongation of the control raw noodles. The L* and b* values of the raw and dried noodle color increased with increasing concentrations of calcium salts, except for noodles with added calcium citrate. Fortification with calcium citrate yielded no significant influence on color, texture, adhesiveness, springiness, flavor, and overall scores for cooked noodles. Noodles fortified with 0.5% calcium citrate made from oyster shells were compared with a control sample of noodles and noodles fortified with commercially available calcium citrate. The particle size of the calcium citrate made from oyster shells (258 nm) was smaller than that of the purchased calcium citrate (2631 nm). Noodles fortified with calcium citrate made from oyster shells showed no significantly difference compared to noodles fortified with commercially available calcium citrate. These results suggest that calcium citrate made from oyster shells may be used as the additive of choice for the manufacture of calcium-fortified noodles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pathological calcifications may consist of calcium oxalate (CaOx), hydroxyapatite (HAP), and brushite (BRU). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of phytate (inositol hexakisphosphate, InsP6), InsP6 hydrolysates, and individual lower InsPs (InsP5, InsP4, InsP3, and InsP2) on the crystallization of CaOx, HAP and BRU in artificial urine. All of the lower InsPs seem to inhibit the crystallization of calcium salts in biological fluids, although our in vitro results showed that InsP6 and InsP5 were stronger inhibitors of CaOx crystallization, and InsP5 and InsP4 were stronger inhibitors of BRU crystallization. For the specific in vitro experimental conditions we examined, the InsPs had very weak effects on HAP crystallization, although it is likely that a different mechanism is responsible for HAP crystallization in vivo. For example, calciprotein particles seem to have an important role in the formation of cardiovascular calcifications in vivo. The experimental conditions that we examined partially reproduced the in vivo conditions of CaOx and BRU crystallization, but not the in vivo conditions of HAP crystallization. Calcium salt precipitation induced by intracanal medicaments contributes to the formation of apical hard tissue during apexification. This study compared the calcium salt-forming ability of a new calcium silicate-based intracanal medicament (Bio-C Temp) with that of two commercial calcium hydroxide pastes (Calcipex Plane II and Vitapex) in a rat subcutaneous implantation model. Polytetrafluoroethylene tubes containing each of the three materials were subcutaneously implanted in 4-week-old male Wistar rats. After 28 days, the composition and amount of calcium salts formed at the material–tissue interface were assessed using micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and elemental mapping. The tested materials produced white precipitates that had Raman spectra with peaks corresponding to hydroxyapatite and calcite. X-ray diffraction detected hydroxyapatite formation on Calcipex Plane II and Vitapex implants, as well as calcite formation on all three materials. Elemental mapping revealed that Bio-C Temp generated significantly smaller calcium- and phosphorus-rich calcified regions within the subcutaneous connective tissue than Vitapex. These results indicate that Bio-C Temp produced less calcium salt in rat subcutaneous tissue than Vitapex, although all materials formed hydroxyapatite and calcite in rat subcutaneous tissue. Simple Summary: In the current study we evaluated two fatty acid sources (soybean oil contained n-6 FA vs. linseed oil contained n-3 FA) along with two different starter protein contents (18 vs. 22% CP). Our findings show that different FAs can impact nitrogen utilization efficiency. Moreover, the immune system of calves is influenced by the interaction of FAs and starter protein content. This is the first report on the interaction effect of FAs and nitrogen content of starters in dairy calves, which can be interesting for both farmers and researchers in order to have optimized starter formulation in terms of the fatty acid source and starter protein contents in an accelerated growth program for calves in commercial dairy farms. This study aimed to investigate the interaction of fatty acid (FA) source [calcium salt of soybean oil (n-6 FA) vs. calcium salt of linseed oil (n-3 FA) both 3% DM basis] with protein content (18% vs. 22% CP, based on DM) on growth performance, blood metabolites, immune function, skeletal growth indices, urinary purine derivatives (PD), and microbial protein synthesis (MPS) in young dairy calves. Forty 3-day-old calves (20 females and 20 males) with a starting body weight (BW) of 40.2 kg were assigned in a completely randomized block design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Experimental diets were: (1) n-6 FA with 18% CP (n-6-18CP), (2) n-6 FA with 22% CP (n-6-22CP), (3) n-3 FA with 18% CP (n-3-18CP), and (4) n-3 FA with 22% CP (n-3-22CP). Starter feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) were not influenced by experimental diets (p > 0.05). However, before weaning and the entire period, feed efficiency (FE) was greater in calves fed n-3 FA compared to n-6 FA (p < 0.05). Heart girth (weaning, p < 0.05) and hip height (weaning, p < 0.05 and final, p < 0.01) were highest among experimental treatments in calves who received n-3-22CP diets. The greatest blood glucose (p < 0.05) and insulin (p < 0.01) concentrations in the pre-weaning period and the lowest serum concentration of tumor necrosis factor (before weaning, p < 0.05) were observed in calves fed the n-3-22CP diet. However, the greatest blood urea N (before weaning, p < 0.05; after weaning, p < 0.05) and urinary N excretion (p < 0.05) were found in calves fed n-6-22CP diets compared to other experimental arrangements. Phosphates and citrates are calcium sequestering salts (CSS) most commonly used in the manufacture of processed cheese, either singly or in mixtures. Caseins are the main structure forming elements in processed cheese. Calcium sequestering salts decrease the concentration of free calcium ions by sequestering calcium from the aqueous phase and dissociates the casein micelles into small clusters by altering the calcium equilibrium, thereby resulting in enhanced hydration and voluminosity of the micelles. Several researchers have studied milk protein systems such as rennet casein, milk protein concentrate, skim milk powder, and micellar casein concentrate to elucidate the influence of calcium sequestering salts on (para-)casein micelles. This review paper provides an overview of the effects of calcium sequestering salts on the properties of casein micelles and consequently the physico-chemical, textural, functional, and sensorial attributes of processed cheese. A lack of proper understanding of the mechanisms underlying the action of calcium sequestering salts on the processed cheese characteristics increases the risk of failed production, leading to the waste of resources and unacceptable sensorial, appearance, and textural attributes, which adversely affect the financial side of processors and customer expectations. Spore germination plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of Clostridium perfringens-associated food poisoning. Germination is initiated when bacterial spores sense various stimuli, including chemicals and enzymes. A previous study showed that dipicolinic acid (DPA) chelated with calcium (Ca-DPA) significantly stimulated spore germination in C. perfringens. However, whether Ca2+ or DPA alone can induce germination is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the possible roles of Ca2+ and other divalent cations present in the spore core, such as Mn2+ and Mg2+, in C. perfringens spore germination. Our study demonstrated that (i) Ca-DPA, but not DPA alone, induced C. perfringens spore germination, suggesting that Ca2+ might play a signaling role; (ii) all tested calcium salts induced spore germination, indicating that Ca2+ is critical for germination; (iii) the spore-specific divalent cations Mn2+ and Mg2+, but not Zn2+, induced spore germination, suggesting that spore core-specific divalent cations are involved in C. perfringens spore germination; and (iv) endogenous Ca2+ and Mg2+ are not required for induction of C. perfringens spore germination, whereas exogenous and partly endogenous Mn2+ are required. Fibrin is considered a highly promising biomaterial for manifold medical applications. Although it is a well-established material in this field, the required enzyme thrombin bears some striking downsides such as high costs and health risks. Current research discovers more and more ways to use fibrin's precursor fibrinogen as a substitute. Fibrinogen's full potential is, however, only retained when using it as fibrous gel, as it is the case for fibrin. In our previous work, we introduced such a kind of material for the first time. This material, called pseudo-fibrin, shows striking similarities to fibrin regarding its supramolecular structure and is created in a facile salt-induced process, which we further improved in this study. In particular, we shine light on the role of Ca2+ in pseudo-fibrin buildup, which turned out to drastically improve the outcome. Never before has it been observed that Ca2+ can induce fibrillogenesis and the gelation of native, enzyme-free fibrinogen. Enzyme catalysis was ruled out by the addition of thrombin and factor XIII inhibitors. Even more striking, Ca2+ induces gelation even under physiological conditions, leading again to stable and fibrous hydrogels. Although this latter approach is possibly co-induced by residual factor XIII, the resulting gels are for the first time recognized as promising materials and not discounted as unwanted side effects. The finding that these gels again consist of fibers especially renders a new perspective on the role of factor XIII and fibrinogen's well-known Ca2+ binding sites. For more than a century, crystallization has remained a chief research topic. One of the most undesirable crystallization phenomena is the formation of calcium carbonate scale in drinking and industrial water systems. In this work, the influence of chemical additives on CaCO3 formation—in either nucleation, crystal growth, or inhibition processes—is investigated by using the CO2-degasification method. Chemical additives are foreign salts (MgCl2, Na2SO4 and MgSO4) to the calco-carbonic system and antiscalants (sodium polyacrylate 'RPI' and sodium-tripolyphosphate 'STPP'). The results show that additives affects both crystallization kinetics and the CaCO3 microstructure. Sulfate and magnesium ions, added separately at constant ionic strength, influence the nucleation step more than the growth of the formed crystallites. Added simultaneously, their effect was accentuated on both nucleation and the growth of CaCO3. Furthermore, antiscalants RPI and STPP affect the crystallization process by greatly delaying the precipitation time and largely increasing the supersaturation coefficient. It was also shown that the calco-carbonic system with additives prefers the heterogeneous nucleation to the homogeneous one. X-ray diffraction patterns show that additives promote the formation of a new crystal polymorph of calcium carbonate as aragonite, in addition to the initial polymorphs formed as calcite and vaterite. A key step in the development of medicinal products is the research and validation of selective and sensitive analytical methods for the control of impurities from synthesis and degradation. As most impurities are similar in structure to the drug substance, the achievement of chemo-selective conditions is usually challenging. Herein, a direct and highly selective ultra-high-performance liquid chromatographic method for determining the assay and related substances content in medicinal products containing rosuvastatin calcium salt (RSV) is presented. RSV is used to treat high cholesterol levels and prevent heart attacks and strokes. The most engaging feature of this method was the baseline separation of all organic related substances listed in the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) monograph for the RSV tablets, achieved for the first time in less than 15 min using the Acquity BEH C18 (100 mm × 2.1 mm, 1.7 μm) column under reversed-phase isocratic conditions. The mobile phase adopted for the chemo-selective analysis does not contain buffers but instead contains trifluoroacetic as an acid additive. The chromatographic method was validated according to the guidelines of the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) and proved to be linear, precise and accurate for determining the content of RSV and related chiral substances in tablet formulations. Uncontrolled inflow of formation fluid (brine) into a well adversely affects the cation–anion bonds in solutions and leads to their dissociation and loss of aggregative stability. Blow-out significantly complicates the drilling process and leads to an increase in non-productive time and in financial costs for problem solving. It is necessary to create a blocking screen that allows separation of the layer from the well and prevents brine flow. This article is devoted to the development of polymeric-blocking compositions that work due to the crystallization reaction of divalent salts of calcium and magnesium chlorides. More than 14 components were detected in the formation fluid on the atomic emission spectrometer. Based on the study of the compatibility of components with brine and the study of rheology and filtration processes through a real core under HPHT conditions, the optimal component polymer composition was selected. The reason for the increase in the rheology of composition during its thickening was established. With the help of tomographic studies, the depth of penetration of the filtrate into the core of layers was determined. Simple Summary: The fatty acid composition of the mammalian brains varies by functional region, development, sex, and diet. In the current study, diets for growing female and castrated male bovines were supplemented with the calcium salts of palm or fish oil for 220 days. The cattle had unrestricted access to the supplements. At slaughter, the brains were removed from the cranium and blocked to the functional region. Analysis of the fatty acid content of the brain revealed they had similar fatty acid contents to other species including rodents and wild ungulates. Although diet differences across the regions were small, cattle supplemented with fish oil had greater contents of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), with arachidonic acid levels being greater in palm-oil-supplemented cattle. Fatty acid contents across regions were similar to what has been reported for other species, and it suggests that a conserved lipid metabolism creates a uniform brain fatty acid profile. Fatty acid composition across functional brain regions was determined in bovine brains collected from cattle that were provided supplements of calcium salts containing either palm or fish oil. The Angus cattle were divided into two groups, with one group offered the supplement of calcium salts of palm oil and the other offered the calcium salts of fish oil (n = 5 females and n = 5 males/supplement) for 220 days. These supplements to the basal forage diet were provided ad libitum as a suspension in dried molasses. The fish oil exclusively provided eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3). The functional regions were dissected from the entire brains following commercial harvest. While the cattle provided diets supplemented with the calcium salts of palm oil had increased (p < 0.01) liver concentrations of C18:1 n-9, C18:2 n-6, and arachidonic acid, the fish-oil-supplemented cattle had greater (p < 0.01) concentrations of liver EPA, DHA, and C18:3 n-3. In the brain, DHA was the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid. In the amygdala, pons, frontal lobe, internal capsule, and sensory cortex, DHA concentrations were greater (p < 0.05) in the brains of the cattle fed fish oil. Differences among the supplements were small, indicating that brain DHA content is resistant to dietary change. Arachidonic acid and C22:4 n-6 concentrations were greater across the regions for the palm-oil-supplemented cattle. EPA and C22:5 n-3 concentrations were low, but they were greater across the regions for the cattle fed fish oil. The effects of sex were inconsistent. Vascular calcification is a systemic disease contributing to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiology of vascular calcification involves calcium salt deposition by vascular smooth muscle cells that exhibit an osteoblast-like phenotype. Multiple conditions drive the phenotypic switch and calcium deposition in the vascular wall; however, the exact molecular mechanisms and the connection between vascular smooth muscle cells and other cell types are not fully elucidated. In this hazy landscape, effective treatment options are lacking. Due to the pathophysiological complexity, several research models are available to evaluate different aspects of the calcification process. This review gives an overview of the in vitro cell models used so far to study the molecular processes underlying vascular calcification. Edible jellyfish are a traditional Southeast Asian food, usually prepared as a rehydrated product using a salt and alum mixture, whereas they are uncommon in Western Countries and considered as a novel food in Europe. Here, a recently developed, new approach for jellyfish processing and stabilization with calcium salt brining was upgraded by modifying the pre-treatment step of freshly caught jellyfish and successfully applied to several edible species. Treated jellyfish obtained by the application of the optimized version of this method respected both quality and safety parameters set by EU law, including no pathogenic microorganisms, absence or negligible levels of histamine and of total volatile basic nitrogen, no heavy metals; and the total bacterial, yeast, and mold counts were either negligible or undetectable. Jellyfish treated by the presented method exhibited unique protein content, amino acid and fatty acid profiles, antioxidant activity, and texture. The optimized method, initially set up on Rhiszostoma pulmo, was also successfully applied to other edible jellyfish species (such as Cotylorhiza tuberculata, Phyllorhiza punctata, and Rhopilema nomadica) present in the Mediterranean Sea. Simple Summary: Calcium salts of fatty acids from palm oil represent a very common supplement in dairy cows' diets. The present results show that including up to 3.9% of CS-PFA in lactating cow rations with low fiber content did not affect milk and fat yields, decreased protein percentages and yields, reduced rumen fermentation, and decreased the total-tract apparent digestibility of NDF. In spite of the negative effects on rumen fermentation and digestibility, the adverse effects on yields were minor, which indicates that, under specific circumstances, feeding high-fat diets containing large amounts of CS-PFA to dairy cows fed low-fiber diets is possible. Instability in grain prices led to continuing worldwide growth in the proportion of fat supplements in lactating cows' rations. However, fat supplementation was associated with decreases in feed intake, rumen fermentation, and feed digestibility. The present objectives were to test the effects of high-fat diets from calcium salts of palm oil fatty acids (CS-PFA) in lactating cow rations containing high proportions of concentrate, on feed intake, milk yields, rumen environment, and digestibility. Forty-two multiparous mid-lactation dairy cows were assigned to three treatments, designated as low fat (LF), moderate fat (MF), and high fat (HF) that contained (on DM basis), respectively, (i) 4.7% total fat with 1.7% CS-PFA, (ii) 5.8% total fat with 2.8% CS-PFA, and (iii) 6.8% total fat with 3.9% CS-PFA. Rumen samples were collected for pH, ammonia, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) measurements, and fecal grab samples were collected for digestibility measurements. A numerical trend of decreasing dry matter intake with increasing CS-PFA in diet was observed: 28.7, 28.5, and 28.1 kg/day in LF, MF, and HF, respectively (p < 0.20). No differences between treatments were observed in milk yields and milk-fat percentages, but protein percentage in milk tended to fall with increasing dietary CS-PFA content (p < 0.08), which resulted in 6.4% smaller protein yields in the HF than in the LF group (p < 0.01). Milk urea nitrogen was 15.3% higher in HF than in LF cows (p < 0.05). Rumen pH was higher at all sampling times in the MF and HF than in the LF cows. Concentrations of propionic acid and total VFA were higher in LF than in MF and HF cows. The apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter was higher with LF than with HF (p < 0.002), and that of organic matter was lowest with the HF diet (p < 0.005). The apparent NDF digestibility declined with increasing dietary fat content, and it was 8.5 percentage points lower in HF than in LF cows (p < 0.009). Apparent fat digestibility increased with increasing dietary fat content, and it was higher by 10.4 percentage points in the HF than in the LF group (p < 0.004). In conclusion, diets with high concentrate-to-forage ratios, containing up to 6.8% total fat and 3.9% CS-PFA, negatively affected rumen fermentation and NDF digestibility in high-yielding dairy cows; however, the effects on yields were minor, indicating that, under specific circumstances, the inclusion of large amounts of CS-PFA in dairy cows' rations with low fiber content is feasible. Recently, the development of dental materials has increased the availability of various hyperesthesia desensitizers. However, there are no studies on the duration of retreatment in terms of adherence rates. Thus, the adhesion rates of resin-based desensitizers were investigated. We used a conventional desensitizer and a recently developed desensitizer containing calcium salt of 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitic acid (C-MET) and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen calcium phosphate (MDCP). These colored agents were applied to the surfaces of premolars and molars, and the area was measured from weekly oral photographs. Areas were statistically analyzed and mean values were calculated using 95% confidence intervals. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. These rates were significantly higher on the buccal side of the maxilla and lower on the lingual side of the maxilla. In addition, the desensitizer containing C-MET and MDCP displayed significantly higher adhesion rates. It is suggested that this will require monthly follow-ups and reevaluation because both agents cause less than 10% adherence and there is almost no sealing effect after 4 weeks. In addition, the significantly higher adhesion rate of the desensitizer containing C-MET and MDCP indicated that the novel monomer contributed to the improvement in the adhesion ability. The addition of Mn in bioceramic formulation is gaining interest in the field of bone implants. Mn activates human osteoblast (h-osteoblast) integrins, enhancing cell proliferation with a dose-dependent effect, whereas Mn-enriched glasses induce inhibition of Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. In an effort to further optimize Mn-containing scaffolds' beneficial interaction with h-osteoblasts, a selective and specific covalent functionalization with a bioactive peptide was carried out. The anchoring of a peptide, mapped on the BMP-2 wrist epitope, to the scaffold was performed by a reaction between an aldehyde group of the peptide and the aminic groups of silanized Mn-containing bioceramic. SEM-EDX, FT-IR, and Raman studies confirmed the presence of the peptide grafted onto the scaffold. In in vitro assays, a significant improvement in h-osteoblast proliferation, gene expression, and calcium salt deposition after 7 days was detected in the functionalized Mn-containing bioceramic compared to the controls. Simple Summary: The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of three lipid supplements in ovine diets on milk healthy fatty acid composition. Rations provided a source of α-linolenic acid, either protected or unprotected from ruminal biohydrogenation (linseed oil and Ca-salts of linseed oil) or long-chain n-3 fatty acids (algae oil). Seventy-two Churra dairy ewes were divided and randomly assigned to four experimental treatments for 6 weeks. The treatments consisted of a TMR (40:60 forage:concentrate ratio) that varied according to the inclusion of different types of fat (23 g/100 g TMR): hydrogenated palm oil (control), linseed oil (LO), calcium soap of linseed oil (CaS-LO) and marine algae oil (AO). The most effective lipid supplement to increase n-3 FA in milk was AO. 22:6 n-3 and total n-3 PUFA content increased from 0.02 and 0.60% (control) to 2.63 and 3.53% (AO), respectively. All diets supplemented with n-3 FA diminished the content of saturated FA in milk and its atherogenic index, while the levels of trans-11 18:1 and cis-9 trans-11 18:2 significantly increased. Bread is a popular food that is widely consumed worldwide but has a short shelf life. Besides that, when incorporating prebiotics and calcium, aging mechanisms accelerate, further shortening the shelf-life. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of freezing storage on the rheological (loss tangent, tan δ) and thermal (glass transition temperature, Tg) properties of unfrozen dough, the fermentation times (tf), and the baking quality of wheat bread fortified with calcium and inulin. Formulations studied included wheat flour (control-C), flour with 1800 ppm Ca (calcium carbonate-CA, calcium citrate-CI or calcium lactate-LA), and flour with 2400 ppm Ca and 12% inulin (calcium carbonate-CA-In, calcium citrate-CI-In or calcium lactate-LA-In). Doughs were stored at −18 °C for 1, 7, 30 and 60 days. After storage, the rheological (oscillatory rheometry and texture profile analysis) and thermomechanical properties of the thawed doughs were measured. The quality parameters of breads determined consisted of specific volume (Vs), color, moisture, firmness, elasticity, and alveoli size characterization. Dough freezing neither changed viscoelasticity (tan δ) nor decreased hardness and adhesiveness up to the values observed for fresh wheat dough. The Tg of dough with calcium carbonate increased, while for samples with organic calcium salts, it (citrate and lactate) decreased. The tf of thawed dough significantly increased. The Vs of all breads did not change during the first 30 days but decreased after freezing the dough for 60 days (p < 0.05), probably due to the death of the yeasts. Crumb moisture decreased over time, and in all cases crumb C had the highest moisture content, suggesting a dehydration effect of the calcium salt. The firmness of CA, LA and C crumbs were similar and higher than that of CI (p < 0.05), suggesting a destabilizing effect of CI anion on gluten proteins. Inulin contributed to the depreciation of bread quality, mainly at 60 days of dough freezing storage. It can be concluded that during freezing storage, calcium improves the dynamic elasticity of the dough, although under extreme conditions it generates loaves of smaller volume. Principal component analysis (PCA) explained 66.5% of total variance. Principal component 1 (PC1) was associated with dough properties, and accounted for 44.8% of the total variance. In turn, PC2 was mainly related to baking quality parameters (fermentation time, browning index, firmness and springiness of crumbs), and explained 21.7% of the total variance. The use of inorganic salt hydrates for thermochemical energy storage (TCS) applications is widely investigated. One of the drawbacks that researchers face when studying this class of materials is their tendency to undergo deliquescence phenomena. We here proposed and investigated, for the first time, the possibility of using organic salt hydrates as a paradigm for novel TCS materials with low water solubility, that is, more resistance to deliquescence, a tendency to coordinate a high number of water molecules and stability under operating conditions. The organic model compound chosen in this study was calcium; 7-[[2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetyl]amino]-3-[(2-methyl-5,6-dioxo-1H-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)sulfanylmethyl]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylate, known as calcium ceftriaxone, hereafter named CaHS (calcium hydrated salt), a water-insoluble organic salt, which can combine up to seven water molecules. The CaHS was prepared by precipitation from the water-soluble disodium triaxone. The thermal behavior of CaHS, in terms of stability and dehydration–hydration cyclability, was assessed. The material can operate in the temperature range of 30–150 °C, suitable for TCS. No deliquescence phenomena occurred upon exposure to a relative humidity (RH) between 10 and 100%. Its heat storage capacity, so far unknown, was measured to be ~595.2 kJ/kg (or ~278.6 kWh/m3). The observed heat storage capacity, thermal stability, and good reversibility after dehydration–hydration cycles highlight the potential of this class of materials, thus opening new research paths for the development and investigation of innovative organic salt hydrates. Understanding the hydrogeochemical and physicochemical processes and factors controlling the chemical characteristics of groundwater (GW) is essential in water resources studies. In this work, the authors explored, applied, and evaluated the practicality of a series of analysis methods, exploring their ability to improve the representation of the generic GW chemical datasets. The demonstration resulted in a detailed explanation of findings and interpretations, which benefits newcomers who may not be experts in managing such data. Visualization-based, facile, readily readable, and interpretable graphs were tuned and applied to identify the interconnected controlling factors. The examined varieties were bubble diagrams, 3D surface plots, and scatter box plot matrices. Box plot matrices yielded intensive information about the significant interacting parameters in one graph. Employing bubble diagrams produced vast detail, allowing the identification of the significant processes and enabling the recognition of internally acting mechanisms that were otherwise hidden. The identified GW evolution processes include aerosol dissolution, evaporation, direct and reverse ion exchange, precipitation of calcium salts, flushing out of soil-bounded salts, and rock weathering. pH and HCO3− fluctuations coupled with evaporation were recognized as prominent factors giving rise to the vicious salinization cycle, which is thought to be the process causing the worst deterioration in the GW quality and the salinity within the study area. In this paper, chelating agents were introduced as standalone fluids for enhancing the oil recovery from carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. Chelating agents such as glutamic acid di-acetic acid (GLDA), ethylene-diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA), and hydroxyl-ethylethylene-diamine-tri-acetic acid (HEDTA) were used. Chelating agents can be found in different forms such as sodium, potassium, or calcium salts. There is a significant gap in the literature about the influence of salt type on the hydrocarbon recovery from carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. In this study, the impact of the salt type of GLDA chelating agent on the oil recovery was investigated. Potassium-, sodium-, and calcium-based high-pH GLDA solutions were used. Coreflooding experiments were conducted at high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) conditions using carbonate and sandstone cores. The used samples had porosity values of 15–18%, and permeability values were between 10 and 75 mD. Seawater was injected as a secondary recovery process. Thereafter, a GLDA solution was injected in tertiary mode, until no more oil was recovered. In addition to the recovery experiments, the collected effluent was analyzed for cations concentrations such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. Moreover, dynamic adsorption, interfacial tension, and contact angle measurements were conducted for the different forms of GLDA chelating agent solutions. The results of this study showed that incremental oil recovery between 19% and 32% of the Original Oil in Place (OOIP) can be achieved, based on the salt type and the rock lithology. Flooding carbonate rocks with the calcium-based GLDA chelating agent yielded the highest oil recovery (32% of OOIP), followed by that with potassium-based GLDA chelating agent, and the sodium-based GLDA chelating agent yielded the lowest oil recovery. The reason behind that was the adsorption of the calcium-based GLDA on the rock surface was the highest without reducing the rock permeability, which was indicated by the contact angle, dynamic adsorption, and flooding experiments. Various bone proteins and growth factors in specific concentrations are required for bone formation. If the body cannot produce sufficient quantities of these factors, bone trauma can be healed with an implant that includes the required factors in a carrier. This study was designed to evaluate various calcium salt candidates that can be used as carrier with reindeer bone protein extract to induce ectopic bone formation in the muscle pouch model of mouse. The bone protein extract was either impregnated into the disc form of carrier or mixed with carrier powder before implantation. The radiographic analysis indicated increased bone formation in all of the active groups containing the bone protein extract compared to the controls within 21 days follow-up. The highest bone formation was seen in the group with calcium sulfate with stearic acid where new bone and calcified cartilage were clearly visible. The greatest bone formation occurred in the groups that had bone protein extract readily available. This indicates that the bone forming factors in sufficient concentrations are required at the early stage of bone formation. (1) Background: The mussel (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis) is the most widespread lamellibranch mollusk, being fished on all coasts of the European seas. Mussels are also widely grown in Japan, China, and Spain, especially for food purposes. This paper shows an original technique for mussel shell processing for preparation of calcium salts, such as calcium levulinate. This process involves synthesis of calcium levulinate by treatment of Mytilus galloprovincialis shells with levulinic acid. The advantage of mussel shell utilization results in more straightforward qualitative composition. Thus, the weight of the mineral component lies with calcium carbonate, which can be used for extraction of pharmaceutical preparations. (2) Methods: Shell powder was first deproteinized by calcination, then the mineral part was treated with levulinic acid. The problem of shells generally resulting from the industrialization of marine molluscs creates enough shortcomings, if one only mentions storage and handling. One of the solutions proposed by us is the capitalization of calcium from shells in the pharmaceutical industry. (3) Results: The toxicity of calcium levulinate synthesized from the mussel shells was evaluated by the method known in the scientific literature as the Constantinescu phytobiological method (using wheat kernels, Triticum vulgare Mill). The impacts of adding calcium chloride (CaCl2) and calcium lactate (CaLac) with different concentrations (0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.7%) on the physicochemical properties of cured beef sausages were investigated in this study. Meat color, pH, lipid oxidation, and cooking loss were measured at respective manufacturing stages (ground beef, raw chopped batter, and after cooking). Additionally, meat color, pH, lipid oxidation, nitrosylhemochrome, residual nitrite, and texture profiles of vacuum-packaged sausages were evaluated during seven days of storage. Compared with the control (no Ca added), both calcium salts resulted in deteriorative color and texture properties, and promoted pH decline, cooking loss, and lipid oxidation of sausages during manufacturing and storage. However, increased calcium salt addition led to the reduction of residual nitrite over time. Compared to CaCl2 addition, 0.2–0.4% CaLac resulted in greater redness and oxidative stability and softer texture. These results may be useful when considering calcium salt additions in sausages, for the purpose of co-extruded sausages coated with alginate where Ca salts are used to form the casing during the co-extrusion of the sausages. Folate is a vitamin beneficial for humans that plays an important role in metabolism, but it cannot be well supplemented by food; it is necessary to supplement it in other ways. Based on this consideration, a novel crystal form C of 6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium salt (MTHF CAC) was obtained. To explore the difference between MTHF CAC and the crystal form Ⅰ of 6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium salt (MTHF CA) as well as an amorphous product of 6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt (MTHF GA), their stability and pharmacokinetic behaviours were compared. The results of high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet detection analysis indicated that MTHF CAC showed a better stability than MTHF CA and MTHF GA. After oral administration of MTHF CAC, MTHF CA, and MTHF GA to male rats, the MTHF concentrations were analysed using a validated liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, and the pharmacokinetic parameters were compared. The mean residence times (0–t) of MTHF CAC, MTHF CA, and MTHF GA were 3.7 ± 1.9 h, 1.0 ± 0.2 h (p < 0.01), and 1.5 ± 0.3 h (p < 0.05), respectively. The relative bioavailability of MTHF CAC was calculated to be 351% and 218% compared with MTHF CA and MTHF GA, respectively, which suggests that MTHF CAC can be better absorbed and utilized for a longer period of time. Background: Metabolic and physicochemical evaluation is recommended to manage the condition of patients with nephrolithiasis. The estimation of the saturation state (β values) is often included in the diagnostic work-up, and it is preferably performed through calculations. The free concentrations of constituent ions are estimated by considering the main ionic soluble complexes. It is contended that this approach is liable to an overestimation of β values because some complexes may be overlooked. A recent report found that β values could be significantly lowered upon the addition of new and so far neglected complexes, [Ca(PO4)Cit]4− and [Ca2H2(PO4)2]. The aim of this work was to assess whether these complexes can be relevant to explaining the chemistry of urine. Methods: The Ca–phosphate–citrate aqueous system was investigated by potentiometric titrations. The stability constants of the parent binary complexes [Cacit]− and [CaPO4]−, and the coordination tendency of PO43− toward [Ca(cit)]− to form the ternary complex, were estimated. βCaOx and βCaHPO4 were then calculated on 5 natural urines by chemical models, including or not including the [CaPO4]− and [Ca(PO4)cit]4− species. Results: Species distribution diagrams show that the [Ca(PO4)cit]4− species was only noticeable at pH > 8.5 and below 10% of the total calcium. β values estimated on natural urine were slightly lowered by the formation of [CaPO4]− species, whereas [Ca(PO4)cit]4− results were irrelevant. Conclusions: While [CaPO4]− species have an impact on saturation levels at higher pHs, the existence of ternary complex and of the dimer is rejected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work analyzes the effect of the presence of 5 wt.% of solid sodium salts (Na2SO4, Na2CO3, and Na2SiO3) on calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) hydration, addresses hydration kinetics; 2-, 28-, and 90-d mechanical strength, and reaction product microstructure (with X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, (FTIR). The findings show that the anions affect primarily the reactions involved. Ettringite and AH3, are the majority hydration products, while monosulfates are absent in all of the samples. All three salts hasten CSA hydration and raise the amount of ettringite formed. Na2SO4 induces cracking in the ≥28-d pastes due to post-hardening gypsum and ettringite formation from the excess SO42– present. Anhydrite dissolves more rapidly in the presence of Na2CO3, prompting carbonation. Na2SiO3 raises compressive strength and exhibits strätlingite as one of its reaction products. Brine discharge of reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plants represents a challenge for both inland and coastal desalination plants. Zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) can be accomplished by using additional stages of RO, which can recycle that brine water, but the key challenge is the high concentration of divalent salts. These divalent salts (especially calcium and magnesium salts) forms a scaling layer on the RO membrane surfaces and hence shorten the life-time of the membranes. In this study, the nanofiltration (NF) procedure was used to remove divalent ions from the brine discharge to minimize the load on additional stages of RO membranes. One of the most critical considerations influencing the selection of an effective NF is the water type, which is expected here by calculation of some hydrochemical parameters (major ions, hypothetical soluble salts (electrolyte), and saturation indices). NF experiments were undertaken on a lab-scale using a low-pressure hand-made system of 4–7 bar. Synthetic single salts solutions and two real brine water discharge (brackish (BWRO) and seawater (SWRO) desalination plants) were used as a feed solution for NF system. The chemical characteristics of the RO-feed, RO-brine, NF-permeate, and NF-reject in were investigated. Electrolyte concentrations and saturation indices were determined based on the concentration of the major ions and the NETPATH software package, respectively. Calculations reveal that the brine concentrate samples contained mostly MgSO4 and MgCl2 soluble salts. The results show that 79–89% of the total dissolved salts (TDS) and 96–98% of the total hardness (TH) were retained using the NF process. The salt rejection of the NF membrane follows the order of CaSO4, Na2SO4, MgSO4, MgCl2, and NaCl with a percent of 97.4, 97.3, 95.2, 93.4, and 79%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The use of lipids in ruminant diets aims to increase energy density without affecting the animal's performance; however, its use can be toxic to the ruminal microbiota, which can be avoided with the use of protected fats. Diets with the inclusion of different fat sources (whole soybean grain, corn germ, calcium salt of fatty acids, and soybean oil) were tested to evaluate the effects of unprotected or protected fats on feeding behavior, carcass characteristics, and quality of the meat of feedlot lambs. The use of calcium salts from fatty acids in feedlot lambs' diets improves the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the carcass and meat. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of protected or unprotected fats in the diet of feedlot lambs on feeding behavior, productive characteristics, carcass traits, and meat quality. Forty male Dorper × Santa Inês lambs (22.27 ± 2.79 kg) were randomly assigned to treatments in a completely randomized design. The experimental treatments consisted of five diets: no added fat (NAF), whole soybeans (WSB), calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA), soybean oil (SO), and corn germ (CG). The total intake of dry matter (DMI) (p < 0.001) and neutral detergent fiber (NDFI) (p = 0.010) were higher in the CSFA and NAF diets. Feeding behavior, morphometric measurements, physicochemical characteristics, and centesimal composition of the Longissimus lumborum muscle were similar between treatments (p > 0.05). The CSFA diet provided higher production (p < 0.05) and better-quality carcasses. The inclusion of fat sources increased the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (p < 0.05). Salivary gland stones, or sialoliths, are the most common cause of the obstruction of salivary glands. The mechanism behind the formation of sialoliths has been elusive. Symptomatic sialolithiasis has a prevalence of 0.45% in the general population, is characterized by recurrent painful periprandial swelling of the affected gland, and often results in sialadenitis with the need for surgical intervention. Here, we show by the use of immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, computed tomography (CT) scans and reconstructions, special dye techniques, bacterial genotyping, and enzyme activity analyses that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) initiate the formation and growth of sialoliths in humans. The deposition of neutrophil granulocyte extracellular DNA around small crystals results in the dense aggregation of the latter, and the subsequent mineralization creates alternating layers of dense mineral, which are predominantly calcium salt deposits and DNA. The further agglomeration and appositional growth of these structures promotes the development of macroscopic sialoliths that finally occlude the efferent ducts of the salivary glands, causing clinical symptoms and salivary gland dysfunction. These findings provide an entirely novel insight into the mechanism of sialolithogenesis, in which an immune system-mediated response essentially participates in the physicochemical process of concrement formation and growth. This study aims to examine the scaling and performance of flat sheet aquaporin FO membranes in the presence of calcium salts. Experiments showed that the application of calcium sulphate (CaSO4) resulted in an 8–78% decline in the water flux. An increase in the cross-flow velocity from 3 to 12 cm/s reduced the decline in the flux by 16%. The deposition of salt crystals on the membrane surface led to the alteration in the membrane's intrinsic properties. Microscopy, attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses confirmed measurements of the zeta potential and contact angle. The use of a three-salt mixture yielded severe scaling as compared with the application of calcium sulphate dehydrate (CaSO4 × 2H2O), i.e., a result of two different crystallisation mechanisms. We found that the amount of sodium chloride (NaCl), saturation index, cross-flow velocity, and flow regime all play an important role in the scaling of aquaporin FO flat sheet membranes. In the mitochondrial matrix, there are insoluble, osmotically inactive complexes that maintain a constant pH and calcium concentration. In the present paper, we examine the properties of insoluble calcium and magnesium salts, such as phosphates, carbonates and polyphosphates, which might play this role. We find that non-stoichiometric, magnesium-rich carbonated apatite, with very low crystallinity, precipitates in the matrix under physiological conditions. Precipitated salt acts as pH buffer, and, hence, can contribute in maintaining ATP production in ischemic conditions, which delays irreversible damage to heart and brain cells after stroke. Phytate (myo-inositol hexaphosphate, InsP6) is an important component of seeds, legumes, nuts, and whole cereals. Although this molecule was discovered in 1855, its biological effects as an antinutrient was first described in 1940. The antinutrient effect of phytate results because it can decrease the bioavailability of important minerals under certain circumstances. However, during the past 30 years, researchers have identified many important health benefits of phytate. Thus, 150 years have elapsed since the discovery of phytate to the first descriptions of its beneficial effects. This long delay may be due to the difficulty in determining phytate in biological media, and because phytate dephosphorylation generates many derivatives (InsPs) that also have important biological functions. This paper describes the role of InsP6 in blocking the development of pathological calcifications. Thus, in vitro studies have shown that InsP6 and its hydrolysates (InsPs), as well as pyrophosphate, bisphosphonates, and other polyphosphates, have high capacity to inhibit calcium salt crystallization. Oral or topical administration of phytate in vivo significantly decreases the development of pathological calcifications, although the details of the underlying mechanism are uncertain. Moreover, oral or topical administration of InsP6 also leads to increased urinary excretion of mixtures of different InsPs; in the absence of InsP6 administration, only InsP2 occurs at detectable levels in urine. Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK)-based nanocomposites have been realized with incorporation (0–30 wt %) of anhydrous calcium terephthalate salts (CATAS), synthetized by reaction of terephtalic acid with the metal (Ca) oxide, by means of a melt processing. Their structure, morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties have been investigated. Scanning electron microscopy observations confirmed homogeneous dispersion of nanometer-sized fillers and a toughened fracture morphology even at the higher content, while thermal characterization confirmed an unvaried thermal stability and unmodified crystalline structure of the reference PEEK matrix. A negligible nucleating effect was evidenced, while a blocking effect of the amorphous phase fraction provide composites with increased stiffness, confirmed by enhanced values of G' and shifts of glass transition peak to higher temperatures, for restriction in chain mobility imposed by CATAS. The proposed solutions aimed to enlarge the application range of high performance costly PEEK-based composites, by using thermally stable nanofillers with limited costs and easily controllable synthesis phase. This study investigated and compared the product characteristics of pyrolysis lignin under different catalytic effects resulting from various calcium salts. The pyrolysis of lignin was conducted in a fixed-bed reactor with calcium salt additives, which included CaCl2, Ca(OH)2, and Ca(HCOO)2. The compositions of gas and bio-oil were detected using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The characterizations of chars were examined using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that all three types of calcium salts helped to promote bio-oil yield and inhibit gas and char from forming. Regarding the composition of gas products, calcium salt additives increased the concentrations of H2 and CH4 while decreasing the concentration of CO. In addition, calcium salt additives facilitated the formation of phenol and alkyl-phenols in bio-oil, but reduced the yields of guaiacol and vanillin, in the order CaCl2 < Ca(OH)2 < Ca(HCOO)2. Furthermore, when compared with the addition of CaCl2, the chars prepared by the addition of Ca(OH)2 and Ca(HCOO)2 had relatively higher BET surface areas. In conclusion, Ca(HCOO)2 had the greatest positive influence in regard to the product quality of lignin pyrolysis whilst also elevating the yield of value-added chemicals in bio-oils. Bioresorbable polymers have been studied for several decades as attractive candidates for promoting the advancement of medical science and bio-technology in modern society. In particular, with a well-defined architecture, bioresorbable polymers have prominent advantages over their bulk counterparts for applications in biomedical and implant devices, such as cell delivery, scaffolds for tissue engineering, and hydrogels as well as in the pharmaceutical fields. Biocompatible implant devices based on bioresorbable materials (for instance, bioresorbable polymers that combine the unique advantages of biocompability and easy handling) have emerged as a highly active field due to their promising applications in artificial implant systems and biomedical devices. In this paper, we report an approach to fabricate porous polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds using a 3D printing system. And its surface was treated to a hydrophilic surface using plasma treatment. Then, the aspirin and atorvastatin calcium salt mixture was dip coated onto the surface. The drug coating technology was used to deposit the drug material onto the scaffold surface. Our porous PCL scaffold was coated with aspirin and atorvastatin calcium salt to reduce the blood LDL cholesterol and restenosis. These results suggest that our approach may provide a promising scaffold for developing bioresorbable drug-delivery-biomaterials. We further demonstrate that our bioresorbable medical device can be used as vascular scaffolds to provide a wide range of applications for the design of medical devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
