The calcareous materials used in constructing the Phaya Thon Zu temple at the Bagan historical sites in Myanmar are mortars, plasters, and stuccos. Among them, the mortars and plasters are a mixture of original and new materials used for recent conservation treatments. In this study, the making techniques were examined through analysis of calcareous materials by production period. All calcareous materials have a mineral composition similar to soil, except calcite. Stuccos have the most refined aggregates, homogeneous particle size, and the highest lime and organic contents. They were designed to improve ease of carving and weathering resistance, considering the unique characteristics of the stuccos. Because all calcareous materials were mixed with soil, the origin of the clay materials was analyzed. It was concluded that the mortars were produced by mixing clay and sandy soil, and the original mortars showed characteristics similar to soil. It is highly possible that sandy soil from around the Htillominlo temple was used to produce new plasters, and it is estimated that a mixture of clay soil was used for the original plasters and stuccos. A clear provenance interpretation of the original and raw materials used for each construction and the mixing ratio of clay materials need to be discussed through experiments, along with the estimated provenance area of the raw calcareous materials. The performance of soil nailed walls is evaluated based on lateral displacements, especially in high walls. In this study, the displacement behavior of nailed walls, which are frequently preferred in retaining wall systems in hard clayey soils, was examined by taking into account the corner effect. The nailed wall model was created using Plaxis 2D v.23, and the performance of the model was verified with the results of inclinometer measurements taken on-site. To assess the influence of excavation pit dimensions on the corner effect, 25 three-dimensional and 25 plane–strain slice models were created using Plaxis 3D v.23, and the effect of excavation pit dimensions on the plane–strain ratio (PSR) was determined. Then, analysis studies were carried out by creating 336 3D and 336 plane–strain slice models with variable parameters, such as slope angle (β), wall angle (α), nail length (L/H), excavation depth (H), and distance from the corner (xH). Its effects on PSR were determined. The interactions of the parameters with each other and PSR estimation were evaluated using machine learning (ML) methods: artificial neural networks (ANN), classifical and regression tree (CART), support vector regression (SVR), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Soil hydrology seriously affects the prevention of desertification in karst areas. However, water infiltration in the different soil layers of secondary forests and artificial forests in karst areas remains uncertain. This lack of clarity is also the factor that constrains local vegetation restoration. Therefore, monitoring and simulating the priority transport of soil moisture will help us understand the shallow soil moisture transport patterns after artificial vegetation restoration in the local area, providing a reference for more scientific restoration of the ecological environment and enhancement of carbon storage in karst areas. The integration of soil physical property assessments, computed tomography (CT) scanning, dye tracing studies, and HYDRUS-2D modeling was utilized to evaluate and contrast the attributes of soil macropores and the phenomenon of preferential flow across various forestland categories. This approach allowed for a comprehensive analysis of how the soil structure and water movement are influenced by different forest ecosystems and infiltration head simulations (5 mm, 15 mm, 35 mm, and 55 mm) to elucidate the dynamics of water movement across diverse soil types within karst regions, to identify the causes of water leakage due to preferential flow in secondary forests, and to understand the mechanisms of water conservation and reduction in artificial forests adopting a multifaceted approach. This study demonstrated that (1) the soil hydrological capacity of a plantation forest was 20% higher than a natural forest, which may be promoted by the clay content and distribution. (2) Afforestation-enhanced soils in karst regions demonstrate a significant capacity to mitigate the loss of clay particles during episodes of preferential flow and then improve the soil erosion resistance by about 5 times, which can effectively control desertification in karst area. (3) The uniform distribution of macropores in plantation forest soil was conducive to prevent water leakage more effectively than the secondary forest but was incapable of hindering the occurrence of preferential flow. The secondary forest had a very developed preferential flow phenomenon, and soil clay deposition occurred with an increase in depth. (4) Moreover, the results for preferential flow showed that the matrix flow depth did not increase with the increase in water quantity. Short-term and high-intensity heavy rainfall events facilitated the occurrence of preferential flow. Infiltration along the horizontal and vertical directions occurred simultaneously. These results could facilitate a further understanding of the contribution of the plantation to soil amelioration and the prevention of desertification in karst areas, and provide some suggestions for the sustainable development of forestry in karst areas where plantation restoration is an important ingredient. Soils play a central role in ecosystem functioning, and thus, mapped soil property information is indispensable to supporting sustainable land management. Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) provides a framework to spatially estimate soil properties. However, broad-scale DSM remains challenging because of non-purposively sampled soil data, large data volumes for processing extensive soil covariates, and high model complexities due to spatially varying soil–landscape relationships. This study presents a three-dimensional DSM framework for Switzerland, targeting the soil properties of clay content (Clay), organic carbon content (SOC), pH value (pH), and potential cation exchange capacity (CECpot). The DSM approach is based on machine learning and a comprehensive exploitation of soil and remote sensing data archives. Quantile Regression Forest was applied to link the soil sample data from a national soil data base with covariates derived from a LiDAR-based elevation model, from climate raster data, and from multispectral raster time series based on satellite imagery. The covariate set comprises spatially multiscale terrain attributes, climate patterns and their temporal variation, temporarily multiscale land use features, and spectral bare soil signatures. Soil data and predictions were evaluated with respect to different landcovers and depth intervals. All reference soil data sets were found to be spatially clustered towards croplands, showing an increasing sample density from lower to upper depth intervals. According to the R2 value derived from independent data, the overall model accuracy amounts to 0.69 for Clay, 0.64 for SOC, 0.76 for pH, and 0.72 for CECpot. Reduced model accuracies were found to be accompanied by soil data sets showing limited sample sizes (e.g., CECpot), uneven statistical distributions (e.g., SOC), and low spatial sample densities (e.g., woodland subsoils). Multiscale terrain covariates were highly influential for all models; climate covariates were particularly important for the Clay model; multiscale land use covariates showed enhanced importance for modeling pH; and bare soil reflectance was a major driver in the SOC and CECpot models. Coix lacryma-jobi L., an annual or perennial plant belonging to the Poaceae family, has long been cultivated as a food and medicine plant in China. In recent years, coix cultivation for high yields and good quality has become a research hotspot in Southwest China. Soil optimization is essential for improving crop growth. To ensure the robust establishment of coix plants, eight soil substrates, prepared from three typical soils, i.e., red clay soil, peat soil, and sandy soil, were used to cultivate two local coix varieties (Pu coix from Fujian Province, China; Qi coix from Hebei Province, China), and the plant growth and root coixol content of the two coix varieties were investigated. It was found that coix plants could maintain growth when cultivated with peat soil or sandy soil, but red clay soil was unfavorable for coix growth. The mixtures of sandy soils and peat soils resulted in synergistic benefits for coix growth and root coixol levels over the effects of sandy soil or peat soil alone. In conclusion, the mixtures of sandy soils and peat soils with appropriate proportions (sandy soils/peat soils = 2:1) were suggested as an ideal soil substrate for coix cultivation. This study focuses on the use of alkali-activated materials and geopolymer grouts in deep soilmixing. Three types of grouts, incorporating metakaolin and/or slag and activated with sodium silicate solution, were characterized at different scales to understand the development of their local structure and macroscopic properties. The performance of the soilmix was assessed by using combinations of the grouts and model soils with different clay contents. Feret's approach was used to understand the development of compressive strength at different water-to-solid ratios ranging from 0.65 to 1. The results suggested that incorporating calcium reduced the water sensitivity of the materials, which is crucial in soilmixing. Adding soils to grouts resulted in improved mechanical properties, due to the influence of the granular skeleton. Based on strength results, binary soilmix mixtures containing 75% of metakaolin and 25% of slag, with H2O/Na2O ratios ranging from 28 to 42 demonstrated potential use for soilmixing due to the synergistic reactivity of metakaolin and slag. Populus euphratica, Tamarix ramosissima, and Sophora alopecuroides are, respectively, typical arboreal, shrubby, and herbaceous species in oases of arid regions. It is important to study the difference in metabolic characteristics of the rhizosphere fungal community of these plant species and their relationships with soil factors for the preservation of delicate arid oasis ecosystems with future environmental changes. In this study, we, respectively, collected 18 rhizosphere soil samples of P. euphratica, T. ramosissima, and S. alopecuroides to explore the difference in rhizosphere fungal metabolic characteristics of different plant life forms and their underlying driving factors. The results showed that (1) soil physicochemical properties (including soil water content, pH, etc.) were significantly different among different plant species (p < 0.05). (2) Rhizosphere fungal metabolic characteristics were significantly different between S. alopecuroides and T. ramosissima (ANOSIM, p < 0.05), which was mainly caused by the different utilization of carboxylic carbon. (3) The RDA showed that the main driving factors of the variations in rhizosphere fungal metabolic characteristics were different among different plant species. The main explanatory variables of the variations in the metabolic characteristics of the rhizosphere fungal community were carbon to nitrogen ratio (23%) and available potassium (17.4%) for P. euphratica, while soil organic carbon (23.1%), pH (8.6%), and total nitrogen (8.2%) for T. ramosissima, and soil clay content (36.6%) and soil organic carbon (12.6%) for S. alopecuroides. Ma bamboo (Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro) is a fast-growing woody grass that offers significant economic benefits, including materials for construction, furniture, biofuel, food, and handicrafts. It also provides ecological benefits like soil conservation, wildlife habitats, and carbon sequestration. However, its species distribution patterns are influenced by various factors, including climate (mainly temperature and precipitation), soil attributes, and landscape characteristics such as topography, land use, and vegetation. Understanding these impacts is essential for the sustainable management of D. latiflorus resources and fostering related economic activities. To address these challenges, we developed a comprehensive habitat suitability (CHS) model that integrates climate, soil, and landscape variables to simulate the distribution dynamics of D. latiflorus under different shared socio-economic pathway (SSP) scenarios. An ensemble model (EM) strategy was applied to each variable set to ensure robust predictions. The results show that the current potential distribution of D. latiflorus spans 28.95 × 104 km2, primarily located in South China and the Sichuan Basin. Its distribution is most influenced by the annual mean temperature (Bio1), the cation exchange capacity of soil clay particles in the 20–40 cm soil layer (CECc 20–40 cm), vegetation, and elevation. Under future climate scenarios, these habitats are projected to initially expand slightly and then contract, with a northward shift in latitude and migration to higher elevations. Additionally, the Sichuan Basin (Sichuan–Chongqing border) is identified as a climatically stable area suitable for germplasm development and conservation. To conclude, our findings shed light on how climate change impacts the geographic distribution of D. latiflorus, providing key theoretical foundations for its sustainable cultivation and conservation strategies. The soil microbiota is a key component of agroecosystems, and understanding its traits is crucial for effective agronomic management. Among beneficial microorganisms, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) are mutually associated with grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.), enhancing the ability of this cropping system to adapt to soil conditions and bolstering its resistance and resilience against abiotic stresses, particularly drought, by promoting root growth and enhancing the roots' absorption surface. The objective of this on-field study was to determine AMF species richness and diversity along with their relation to soil chemical, physical, and biological characteristics in two adjacent organic vineyards in Central Italy. The two tested vineyards of the autochthonous cv. Aleatico differed by the presence of grafted (Vitis berlandieri × V. riparia rootstock; AL-420) or own-rooted (ungrafted V. vinifera L.; AL-ORV) vines. To this aim, soil and root samples were collected and geo-referenced. Analysis of the AMF species colonizing roots of both AL-ORV and AL-420 revealed the presence of four species: Scutellospora alterata, Paraglomus laccatum, Acaulospora laevis, and A. baetica, with S. alterata being the most frequent. Mycorrhization parameters were higher in the roots of grafted plants compared to ungrafted ones. A high beta-glucosidase (BG):N-acetylglusosaminidase (NAG) ratio in two tested vineyards indicated that microbes utilized more cellulose than chitin and peptidoglycan as dominant C resources. A negative correlation between mycorrhization rate (MyCP) and BG was observed, likely because AMFs form mutualistic relationships with plants, depending on the host plant for carbon. Results revealed a positive correlation between the degree of mycorrhizal association and the species involved, with the presence of copper and nickel among metals. Negative correlations were found concerning soil clay content along with beta-glucosidase. In conclusion, the grapevine root system was characterized by a differential symbiotic relationship with AMF species, whose development is influenced by the root genotype, soil texture, and biochemistry. Specifically, the increased frequency of AMFs in relation to copper content strengthens the evidence of their role in maintaining a vine's production capacity in the event of soil contamination by this element. Adding cement to soft soils may lead to brittle behavior and the occurrence of sudden damage. Methods to further improve the tensile and flexural properties of cemented clay are noteworthy topics. This paper mainly focuses on the effect of cement and moisture content on the strength and flexural properties of cemented clay reinforced by PVA fiber. The selected clayey soil was a kaolin with cement content of 5%, 10%, and 15% and moisture content of 50%, 56%, 63%, and 70%. The results show that the incorporation of 0.6% fiber can effectively improve the deformability of cemented clay in unconfined compression tests (UCS). The strengthening effect of fiber, as seen in the peak strength and post-peak strength of UCS, was significantly related to cement content. As the water content increased, the compressive strength of the fiber-reinforced cemented clay decreased, but its load-bearing capacity enhanced. When the cement content was 15%, the splitting tensile strength of fiber-reinforced cemented specimens increased by 11% compared to cemented soil, but the deformability of the specimens became poor. In the cement-content interval from 5% to 10%, the bending toughness was significantly improved. The stable and safe operation of highway/railway lines is largely dependent on the dynamic behavior of subgrade fillings. Clay soils are widely used in subgrade construction and are compacted at different remolding water contents and compaction degrees, depending on the field conditions. As a result, their dynamic behaviors may vary, which have not been fully investigated until now. To clarify this aspect, a series of cyclic triaxial tests were carried out in this study with three typical remolding water contents (w = 19%, 24%, and 29%), corresponding to the optimum water content as well as its dry and wet sides, and two compaction degrees (Dc = 0.8 and 0.9), which were selected according to the field-testing data. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests were also conducted on typical samples to investigate the corresponding soil fabric variations. The findings indicate the following: (a) The soil fabric at the optimum remolding water content and its dry side was characterized by a clay aggregate assembly with a bimodal pore size distribution. In contrast, the soil fabric on the wet side of the optimum water content consisted of dispersed clay particles with a unimodal pore size distribution. (b) As the compaction degree increased, to ensure the optimum water content and its dry side, large pores were compressed to make them smaller, while small pores remained unchanged. Comparatively, all the pores on the wet side were compressed to make them smaller. (c) For each compaction degree, as the remolding water content increased, a non-monotonic changing pattern was identified for both the permanent strain and resilient modulus; the permanent strain first decreased and then increased, while, for the resilient modulus, an initial increasing trend and then a decreasing trend were identified. In addition, a larger changing rate of the permanent strain (resilient modulus) was observed on the dry side, indicating a larger effect of the remolding water content. (d) For each remolding water content, as the compaction degree increased, the permanent strain exhibited a decreasing trend, but an increasing trend was identified for the resilient modulus. Moreover, the rate of change in the permanent strain (resilient modulus) on the dry side of the optimum water content was larger than that on the wet side. In contrast, the minimum rate of change was identified at the optimum water content. The obtained results allowed for the effects of the remolding water content and compaction degree on the dynamic behavior to be analyzed, and they helped guide the construction and maintenance of the subgrade. The impact of antecedent soil moisture content on soil erosion has been a contradictory issue in erosion research, as well as process-based soil loss estimation models. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of antecedent soil moisture content on the loss of clay soil through two-year runoff plot experiments under natural rainfall. Volumetric soil moisture sensors were used to monitor soil moisture changes, and readings were used along with rainfall records to quantify the antecedent soil moisture conditions. The results of this study show that the impact of antecedent soil moisture on interrill erosion is conditional, and the impact only exists in erosion events with a low Rainfall–Runoff Erosivity Index. The coefficient of determination between antecedent soil moisture content and soil loss per the Rainfall–Runoff Erosivity Index (Soil Loss/EI30) varies from 0.222 to 0.758, depending on the rainfall duration and Rainfall–Runoff Erosivity. The results of this study also suggest that accumulative rainfall within 48 h (Pp48) prior to an effective erosion event is strongly correlated with Soil Loss/EI30, particularly when the duration of an effective erosion event is either 3~7 h or 10~30 h. Biopolymers are polymers of natural origin and are environmentally friendly, carbon neutral and less energy-intense additives that can be used for various geotechnical applications. Biopolymers like xanthan gum, carrageenan, chitosan, agar, gellan gum and gelatin have shown potential for improving subgrade strength, erosion resistance, and as canal liners and in slope stabilization. But minimal research has been carried out on cellulose-based biopolymers, particularly microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), for their application in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. In this study, the effect of MCC on select geotechnical properties of kaolin, a weak, highly compressible clay soil, like its liquid and plastic limits, compaction behavior, deformation behavior, unconfined compression strength (UCS) and aging, was investigated. MCC was used in dosages of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2% of the dry weight of the soil, and the dry mixing method was adopted for sample preparation. The results show that the liquid limit increased marginally by 11% but the plasticity index was nearly 74% higher than that of untreated kaolin. MCC rendered the treated soil stiffer, which is reflected in the deformation modulus, which increased with both dosage and age of the treated sample. The UCS of kaolin increased with dosage and curing period. The maximum UCS was observed for a dosage of 2% MCC at a 90-day curing period. This paper presents an extensive comparative analysis of the experimental results of chemical stabilisation of clayey soil in laboratory conditions by comparing the effects of adding conventional stabilisers (lime, cement binder), stabilisers that can be considered as waste material (fly ash, rock flour), as well as alternative chloride-based materials (ferric chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride) on the geomechanical properties of the soil. With the aim of determining the stabiliser optimal content in the mixture with the soil, in the first part of the research, the effects of stabilisation of clayey soil of medium plasticity using the considered stabilisers with different percentage share on the change in uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and pH value of the soil at different time intervals after the treatment were analysed. In the second part of the research, additional tests were conducted on soil samples with optimal content for each of the considered stabilisers by monitoring changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the soil. These include Atterberg's limits (liquid limit and plasticity limit), modulus of compressibility in the oedometer, California bearing ratio (CBR), and swelling potential at different time intervals after the chemical treatment to determine the durability of stabilisation effects. The results of the conducted research reveal that each of the conventional, waste, and alternative materials considered as chemical stabilisers contributes to the improvement of the geomechanical properties of the clayey soil, primarily in terms of increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the swelling of the treated soil. Due to the high rate of the development of housing, transportation and hydraulic engineering construction in the last hundred years, the study of the phenomenon of creep of clay soils has become a subject of scientific research. In the study, experimental investigations of clay soil were conducted using a simple shear device in kinematic loading mode, aimed at examining the influence of shear rate on the viscosity coefficient of the clay soil and its strength characteristics. The tests were performed at four different shear rates and three different vertical load values. Based on the results of experimental and theoretical studies, the viscosity coefficients of clay soil were obtained, and a new rheological equation was proposed, which simultaneously takes into account the influence of Coulomb friction, structural cohesion, cohesion of water–colloidal bonds and viscous resistance of the soil. It has been shown that the shear rate has a significant impact on the viscosity coefficient of clay soil, and the viscosity coefficient itself is a variable quantity, depending both on the magnitude of the applied load and the duration of its application. The obtained results can be used for further improvement of methods for calculating the settlement of structures over time, as well as for predicting the time until the bearing capacity of foundation soils is exhausted. Bacterial leaf streak caused by Xanthomonas vasicola pv. vasculorum (Xvv) is an emerging disease in several corn-producing regions around the world. In Brazil, there is a lack of information on the survival of this bacterium in soil and crop residues. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the survival of Xvv in soil and also in infected corn crop residues under the humid subtropical climate of southern Brazil. The survival of Xvv in soil was initially investigated in sandy and clayey soils maintained at 20, 25 and 30 °C under controlled conditions. The survival of the bacterium under field conditions was studied in artificially infested clayey soil. The survival of Xvv in corn crop residues was investigated in infected residues maintained on the soil surface or buried in the soil at 20 cm deep. Under controlled conditions, regardless of the type of soil, the bacterium survived longer at 20 °C than at higher temperatures. The bacterium survived for 40 days in clayey soil kept at 20 °C and four days in sandy soil maintained at 30 °C. Under field conditions, the survival of Xvv in the soil was only for 48 h and in infected corn crop residues for up to 15 days in the samples maintained on the soil surface. In samples of infected corn residues buried in the soil, the bacterium was only detected at the time the experiment was set up. In general, the results obtained in this study revealed that Xvv survives for a short period of time in soil and in infected corn crop residues under humid subtropical conditions. Therefore, soil and corn residues may not be highly important sources of primary inoculum for the development of bacterial leaf streak on corn crops under these conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the evolution of soil pore structure and shear strength deterioration in compacted clayey soil under controlled wetting and drying (wd) cycles, which are expected to become more frequent due to climate change. Thirty soil samples were compacted at optimal moisture content and 90% maximum dry density. These samples were then subjected to 0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 controlled wd cycles from saturation to the wilting point, and volumetric changes were recorded during each cycle. After the wd treatment, the soil samples were scanned using X-ray computed tomography (CT) at 50 μm resolution and then sheared under unconsolidated–undrained and consolidated–undrained conditions in a triaxial test. Significant shrinkage and swelling of soil samples were observed during wd cycles, with average volumetric strain fluctuating between +12% at saturation and −5% at the wilting point. X-ray CT visualisation and analysis revealed higher porosity, more prominent pores, and increased pore length in soil samples with increasing wd cycles. Both undrained and effective soil shear strength markedly decreased with increasing wd cycles. CT-derived macroporosity and pore length were significant predictors of the soil's undrained and effective shear strength when exposed to wd cycles. The findings emphasise the considerable impact of climate change, specifically wd cycles, on clayey soil, highlighting the need for consideration in the design of earth-based infrastructure. Soil heavy metal (HM) control has become a pressing global ecological and environmental issue, with a significant focus on the western Dabie Mountain in China, a region that is recognized for its ecological barriers and water sources. We analyzed the concentrations, pollution status, and potential ecological risks of 10 HMs (i.e., Cu, +Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Co, Cd, As, Hg, and Mn) in the topsoil of different ecosystems in this region. The effects of four soil groups (Anthrosol, Fluvisols, Gleysol, and Alisols) and three soil texture types (sandy, clayey, and loamy soils) on the above aspects were also analyzed. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) models were performed to identify and quantify the potential sources and contribution rates of these HMs. Results showed that the level of HM pollution may be negligible, and there was no potential ecological risk. Of all metals, Pb and Cd exhibited the highest levels of pollution. The potential ecological risk associated with soil HMs decreased from croplands to urban and further to forests. Cu and Co were more likely to accumulate in Anthrosols, while Alisols were more likely to accumulate Pb, Cd, and Hg and had a higher overall potential ecological risk. The overall risk in clayey and loamy soils is both higher than in sandy soils. The HM accumulation in topsoil was closely related to the soil organic matter and clay contents. The potential main sources of HMs in this region can be agricultural activities, soil parent material, mining, industrial activities, and vehicle emissions. These findings suggest that special attention should be paid to soil Pb and Cd in western Dabie Mountain. In response to the practical production challenges posed by the unreliable operation of the V-shaped squeezing soil-covering and -pressing device (VCP) for planters under clay soil conditions in Northeast China, incomplete seed furrow closure, and severe soil adhesion on pressing wheels, this study proposes a device with star-toothed concave discs for soil-covering and -pressing (STCP) with the aim of enhancing the soil-covering quality of planters. The main working principles of STCP were expounded, and its main structural and installation parameters were determined and designed. Based on bionics, with the dung beetle's protruding head structure as the research object and UHMWPE as the material, an optimized protuberance-type bionic pressing wheel was designed. A Box–Behnken experiment was conducted by taking the width of the compression wheel, the spring deformation, and the installation angle as experimental factors, as well as the weight of the soil adhered to the surface of the pressing wheel (SW) and the soil compactness (SC) as the evaluation indicators. The optimal structural parameters of the pressing device were determined as follows: the width of the pressing wheel was 60.57 mm, the spring deformation was 55.19 mm, and the installation angle was 10.70°. The field comparison tests of soil covering performance showed that the star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device can effectively solve the problem of seed "hanging" and "drying". The average covered soil weight of the star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device was 241.46 g, and the average covered soil weight of VCP was 223.56 g. Compared with VCP, the average covered soil weight of STCP increased by 8.01%. The variation coefficient of covered soil weight after the operation of the star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device was 3.71%, which was more uniform than VCP. The field comparison tests of soil-covering thickness showed that the uniformity of soil-covering thickness can be significantly improved by adding a star-tooth concave disc soil-covering device to VCP. The comparative tests of soil anti-adhesive showed that the convex hull type pressing wheels optimized by bionics had better soil anti-adhesive performance, and the soil adhesion weight was reduced by 43.68% compared with VCP. Ridge-breaking earth cultivation is a new agronomic technology that simplifies and efficiently cultivates ratoon sugarcane. However, traditional cultivators cannot adapt to the distribution of residual stumps, inter-row specifications, and hardened clay soil. This results in substandard soil fragmentation, poor ridge quality, and reduced operational reliability. To address these issues, this article proposes an integrated earth cultivator structure capable of breaking ridges, loosening soil, and raising ridges simultaneously. It is designed to enhance the breaking of tillage layers and the filling of ridges through the coordinated action of multiple soil-engaging components. The effects of pre-loosening by the ridge-breaking plow, high-energy crushing, and throwing by the spirally arranged dense rotary blade group, and soil gathering by the deflector are comprehensively utilized. Additionally, lateral pushing by the ridging plough is employed. Discrete element and finite element simulation results show that densely toothed blades can improve soil supply capacity and structural reliability. This is achieved by increasing the amount of soil throwback and reducing concentrated stress levels. Soil fragmentation rate (SFR) and ridge height (RH) were further used as indicators. Field experiments were conducted to study the effects of operating parameters on breaking and ridging performance. The optimal parameter solution was determined as a forward speed of 0.85 m·s−1 and rotary speed of 289.7 r·min−1. With this adaptive configuration, SFR and RH were improved by 12.4% and 38.5%, respectively, compared with conventional earth cultivators. Additionally, the RSM value of rotary tillage power (Pr) was reduced by 39.6%. Improvements in crushing hardened fields, constructing ridges, and reducing cutting energy consumption have proven effective. Processed manure products have the potential to substitute chemical fertilizers and the use of these products may increase resource efficiency in the food system and decrease emissions of ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gasses (GHG). The yields of maize and grass, as well as emissions, have been determined from a processed manure product: liquid ammonium sulfate from nitrogen stripping animal manure (AS), in comparison to a regular mineral fertilizer, calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN), in a greenhouse experiment and a field demonstration using a sandy and a clay soil. NH3 emissions were determined by comparing AS with a dairy manure as a reference. The yield of both crops, their nitrogen nutrient use efficiency (NUE), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were not significantly different, while NH3 emission was lower from AS compared to the dairy manure. As a side-effect, the sulfur (S) contents of the grass in the fields fertilized with AS were much higher than in the non-fertilized control. We conclude that AS, produced here with a pH < 5.5, can be used as an alternative for CAN in Dutch dairy systems, or similar other system, if S leaching losses do not pose a problem for the environment. The growing number of end-of-life (EoL) photovoltaic (PV) panels as waste materials is forcing many countries to face the challenge of addressing this issue. The presented research explores the utilization of a by-product of this waste material, namely glass powder, with gypsum in geotechnical engineering to improve clay-soil properties. The approach is to integrate these materials to address the sustainable management of EoL PV panels, an underutilized resource in geotechnical applications. Furthermore, the study extensively examines the physical properties of clay soil, gypsum, and glass powder. Composite samples are created by adjusting the proportions of gypsum (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%) and glass powder (0%, 4%, 8%, and 12%) relative to the soil's dry mass. Compaction processes are performed at dry densities of 1500 and 1700 kg/m3, with 7, 28, and 56 days of curing duration. Various tests, including ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), unconfined compressive strength (UCS), assessments of wet and dry cycle durability, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, are conducted. The results reveal that gypsum consistently improves the soil's strength and stiffness features, while initially adding glass powder reduces these properties before showing improvement at a 12% content. Correlations have been proposed to determine the unconfined compressive strength (qu), initial shear modulus (G0), and modulus of elasticity (E) to be acquired utilizing just a single test. Moreover, a correlation has been developed to predict the unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus of any specimen through non-destructive testing. Additionally, microstructural analyses unveil intricate interactions, showcasing the progress of pozzolanic reactions, identifying silicon-rich compounds from glass powder, and elucidating how additives transform soil structure. More exact information on soil nutrient management is crucial due to environmental protection, nature conservation, decreasing sources for mining, general precaution, etc. Soil magnesium (Mg) analytical methods of potassium chloride (KCl), Mehlich 3 (M3), water (WA) and cobalt hexamine (CoHex) extractions are compared with an elemental analysis and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The ratio of the available to the total Mg content was calculated and compared on the whole dataset. The results showed that the linear regressions between all the pairs of Mg content measurement methods were significant. The linear relationship between the KCl and CoHex methods has the highest determination coefficient (R2 = 0.96), followed by WA–M3 (R2 = 0.68), M3–CoHex (R2 = 0.66) and M3–KCl (R2 = 0.60). The M3 solution demonstrated a greater capacity for extracting Mg from the soil. The second part is the analysis of the influence of CaCO3, pH, soil texture and clay content on the measurable magnesium content of soils. It was established that the extraction methods, the soil and the classification method of the soil properties affect the evaluation. Soil texture affects rice nutrient uptake and yield formation by influencing soil structure, microbial activity, and soil nutrient supply capacity. Analyzing the relationship between soil texture, nutrient content, and rice agronomic traits is of great significance for precise and efficient fertilizer application. The tillage layer (0–20 cm) of 31 paddy fields in China's main rice-producing areas was collected to perform rice pot experiments, and soil texture characteristics, physicochemical properties, microbial-related indicators, and rice agronomic traits were measured and analyzed. The results showed that these soils could be classified into four types of soil texture: loamy sandy soil, sandy loam soil, silty loam soil, and silty soil. Analysis of variance showed that the available nitrogen (AN), available potassium (AK), and available phosphorus (AP) contents were the highest in silty loam, silty, and sandy loam soils, respectively, and silt loamy soil had the highest CEC. Principal component analysis (PCA) also showed that soil physicochemical properties can be distinguished to a certain extent according to soil texture types. For the relationship of soil texture parameters and soil physicochemical properties, soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), AN, ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and microbial carbon (MBC) contents were positively correlated with soil clay content, AK was positively correlated with silt content, and soil phosphorus status was significantly related to pH. Mantel's test revealed significant correlations between rice N, P, and K nutrient status, dry matter accumulation, and yield, and soil available nutrient content, MBC, pH, and soil texture parameters. Structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that sand affected soil available nutrients by regulating pH, while clay can positively influence soil available nutrients by affecting soil organic matter mineralization and microbial activity, thus influencing nutrient absorption and yield formation in rice. Overall, in rice production, the silty and silty loam paddy soil with fine texture and higher clay content facilitates the mineralization of soil organic matter and the activity of soil microbes, resulting in more available soil nutrients, which benefits the rice absorption and accumulation of nutrients. Soil-improvement techniques with binders are used in several geotechnical engineering applications as a sustainable solution for the reuse of waste soils. Due to their inherent complexity and their mechanical behaviour, pyroclastic soils are generally considered waste geomaterials in their natural state. Lime treatment of pyroclastic soils can be considered a viable solution for their reuse in geotechnical applications. In this paper, some peculiar features of the chemo-physical evolution and mechanical behaviour of lime-treated pyroclastic soils are evidenced through a multi-scale experimental investigation. While, for clayey soils, the fine fraction is mainly responsible for ion exchange and pozzolanic reactions induced by lime, for pyroclastic soils, pozzolanic reactions are dominant processes due to the low quantity of clay minerals along with the abundance of aluminates and silicates as the main constituents of their amorphous phase. The link between the phenomena detected at the microscale level, the mineralogical composition, and the macroscopic behaviour of two lime treated pyroclastic soils of different origin is explored through a multiscale approach. This investigation presents a new approach for evaluating soil organic carbon (SOC) content in farming soils using a photocatalytic chemical oxygen demand (PeCOD) analyzer combined with geographic information system (GIS) technology for spatial analysis. Soil samples were collected at various sites throughout Canada and were analyzed using sieve analysis, followed by further SOC evaluation using three distinct techniques: loss on ignition (LOI), Walkley-Black, and PeCOD. The PeCOD system, which relies on the photochemical oxidation of organic carbon, showed an exciting correlation between its evaluations and SOC content, making it a prompt and reliable method to evaluate SOC. In this investigation, finer materials such as clayey soils (soil fractions of (<50 µm)) demonstrated high SOC content compared to coarser ones (soil fractions of (>75 µm)) and decreased SOC content with increased soil depth, generally below the 30 cm mark. It should be noted that this investigation revealed that other variables, such as land management practices, precipitation, and atmospheric temperature, have drastic effects on the formation and residence time of SOC. Soft to medium clay soil possesses major sources of damages to the pavement layers overlying them because of their potential failure under moisture changes and external heavy traffic load. In such situations, soil stabilization methods can be used to improve the soil properties and satisfy the desired engineering requirements. This study presents the use of sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA) and lime as chemical stabilizers for a clay soil subbase. Sugarcane bagasse ash and lime are used individually and as mixtures at varying percentages to stabilize a clay soil from Taxila, Pakistan. Various geotechnical laboratory tests such as Atterberg limits, compaction test, and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) are carried out on both pure and stabilized soils. These tests are performed at 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% of either SBA or lime by weight of dry soil. In addition, mixtures of lime and SBA in ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 1:2, and 1:3 are used in 5%, 7.5%, and 10% of dry soil weight, respectively. Results indicate that soil improved with 7.5% SBA showed a 28% increase in the liquid limit, while soil mixed with 2.5% lime in combination with 7.5% SBA showed an increase of 40% in the plastic limit. For the plasticity index, the soil mixed with 7.5% SBA showed an increase of 42%. Moreover, 2.5% lime in combination with 2.5% SBA showed the best improvement in soil consistency as this mixture reduced the soil plasticity from high to low according to the plasticity chart. Furthermore, 2.5% SBA in combination with 5% lime demonstrated the largest improvement on the CBR value, which is about a 69% increase above that of the pure soil. Finally, the cost analysis indicates a promising improvement method that reduces pavement cost, increases design life, and mitigates issues of energy consumption and pollution related to SBA as a solid waste material. As a result of intensive herbicide protection of crops against silky bentgrass (Apera spica-venti (L.) P. Beauv), numerous herbicide-resistant biotypes have been selected, mainly from the group of acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors. We analyzed the development of herbicide-sensitive and herbicide-resistant biotypes of bentgrass and winter wheat under competition, taking into account selected physical and chemical properties of the soil, including nitrogen fertilization. The pot experiment (additive model) was conducted in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons. The experimental factors included: (1) bentgrass with different sensitivity levels to herbicides from the groups HRAC/WSSA 1 and HRAC/WSSA 2, specifically two sensitive and three resistant biotypes; (2) two types of soil, sandy and clay; and (3) nitrogen fertilization, both with and without fertilization. Winter wheat and bentgrass development was assessed during each growing season, every 5 or 3 days from September until May, using the BBCH scale. The emergence date of the tested species/biotypes was recorded. The development of competing species was compared based on a new, proposed index: the duration of the developmental phases. As a result, the soil type and fertilization level differentiated wheat and bentgrass emergence dates and development. The autumn development of the competing species was slower and more uniform than the spring one. At the same time, the dynamics of the bentgrass and wheat development in the spring were greater. Bentgrass and winter wheat emerged earlier and grew more intensively on clay and fertilized soil. To sum up, no clear relationship was found between the resistance/sensitivity of bentgrass to herbicides and changes in the phenological development of plants in competition with winter wheat. Recent decades have witnessed the increasing usage of deep cement mixing (DCM) mixers in the field of marine infrastructure construction. The mixing performance, including the torque history, can be helpful for structural safety evaluation, design, and the optimization of agitators, which is of engineering significance. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, there are no related publications that have reported the mixing behaviors of deep cement mixing agitators. In light of this, the present work conducts experimental and numerical investigations of the mixing behaviors of a DCM ship mixing agitator. To achieve this end, a model test device is established, and mixing experiments using two- and three-blade mixers are respectively conducted. Silt and clay soils are considered in the experiments with a three-blade mixer, while clay soils are used for those with a two-blade mixer. In addition, this work designs a torque transducer placed inside the rotating rod to accurately measure the torque history of the agitator during model test experiments. The experimental results show that, when mixing clay using agitators with different blades, the average torque value required for a two-blade agitator is slightly larger than that for a three-blade one. This study also presents a computational framework based on the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method for an efficient and accurate modeling of the soil-mixing behaviors of the agitator. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data from model tests in terms of torque history, which demonstrates the effectiveness and capacity of our presented computational framework. The numerical results show that the average torque value is smaller at a higher rotational speed during the mixing of clay using a two-bladed agitator, but the effect of rotational speed on the torque history is small. With the development of industry and agriculture, the level of organic pollutants in groundwater exceeds the standard in some parts of the transition zone of the Jianghan Plain–Dabie Mountain area. To investigate the ability of low-permeability layered clay soil in the study area to hinder the migration of organic macromolecular pollutants, the traditional tracer fluorescein sodium was used to represent organic macromolecular pollutants. The adsorption and migration behavior of organic macromolecular pollutants in the layered soil were explored through indoor experiments. Additionally, a one-dimensional soil column solute transport model was established for the study area using HYDRUS-1D to obtain the dispersivities and dispersion coefficients of organic macromolecular pollutants in layered clay soil. The results showed that the breakthrough duration of sodium fluorescein was up to 116 days in silty clay soil, while the breakthrough duration in sandy sub-sandy soil was only 2.6 days. The dispersion coefficient of organic macromolecular pollutants was only 0.0038 cm2/d in silty clay soil, while the dispersion coefficient was up to 4.724 cm2/d in sandy sub-sandy soil. The dispersion coefficient decreased with the increasing clay fraction of the soil. Compared with homogeneous soil, the dispersivity of organic macromolecular pollutants in clayed soil decreased, and the dispersion coefficient also changed. It indicates that the layered clay soil in the study area effectively hinders the downward migration of organic macromolecular pollutants due to its low permeability and pollutant adsorption capacity. Simultaneously, the lateral transport of water at different soil interfaces in layered soil prolongs the time for organic macromolecular pollutants to reach the underlying aquifer. Low-permeability clay soil may act as a short-term barrier to the migration of organic pollutants to deeper soil and groundwater in the study area. Expansive soils commonly encountered beneath foundations often lead to structural issues inducing expensive repairs. With the increase of the frequency of dry summers and irregular rainfall patterns, the clayey and marly soils become more and more sensitive to shrinking and swelling phenomena. So to find solutions and improve the knowledge on such phenomena especially in temperate countries where the saturation state is considered as the usual soil state, the impact of the soil density on shrinkage was studied by varying the compaction mode and introducing a swelling step before shrinkage. As expected, dynamically or statically compacted clayey or marly soils exhibited high shrinkage deformation when the soil had a low density. The swelling before shrinkage impacted the soil structure but ultimately had a low effect on shrinkage deformation. Swelling deformation was also influenced by density; the denser the soil, the more sensitive the compacted soil became to swelling. Furthermore, compaction modes induced differences in swelling or shrinkage amplitude that couldn't be explained by microstructural observations. Finally, results demonstrated that intact soil behavior after shrinkage could be extrapolated from swelling–shrinkage tests conducted on remolded soil samples, thus decreasing the cost of field investigations. The geotechnical properties of clay soil and its mixtures with different proportions (0.75%, 0.85%, 1%, and 1.15%) of Agar Gum biopolymer and Ferrochromium Slag (0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1%), having various curing times and freeze-thaw cycles, were studied through a series of soil mechanical tests to investigate possibilities to improve its undesired/problematic plasticity, compaction, and shear strength characteristics. The results revealed that treatment with an optimal ratio of 1% Agar Gum and 1% Ferrochromium Slag alone, as well as together with, improved the geotechnical properties of the clay soil considerably. Both the unconfined and shear strength properties, along with the cohesion and internal friction angle, increased as much as 47 to 173%, depending on the curing time. The higher the curing time, the higher the shear strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle are up to 21 days. Deteriorating the soil structure and/or fabric, freeze-thaw cycles, however, seem to have an adverse effect on the strength. The higher the freeze-thaw cycle, the lower the shear strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle. Freeze-thaw cycles significantly impact construction by altering soil properties and stability, which can lead to delays and increased costs. While soil-stabilizing additives are vital for addressing these issues, stabilized soils remain susceptible to volume changes and structural alterations, ultimately reducing their strength after repeated freeze-thaw cycles. This study aims to introduce a different approach by employing magnesium chloride (MgCl2) as an antifreeze and soil stabilizer additive to enhance the freeze-thaw resilience of clay soils. We investigated the efficiency of MgCl2 solutions at concentrations of 4%, 9%, and 14% on soil by conducting tests such as Atterberg limits, standard proctor compaction, unconfined compression, and freeze-thaw cycles under extreme cold conditions (−10 °C and −20 °C), alongside microstructural analysis with SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The results showed that MgCl2 reduces the soil's liquid limit and plasticity index while enhancing its compressive strength and durability. Specifically, soil treated with a 14% MgCl2 solution maintained its volume and strength at −20 °C, with similar positive outcomes observed for samples treated with 14% and 9% MgCl2 solutions at −10 °C. This underlines MgCl2's potential to enhance soil stability during initial stabilization and, most importantly, preserve it under cyclic freeze-thaw stresses, offering a solution to improve construction practices in cold environments. In recent years, products containing humic acids have been increasingly used in agriculture to improve soil parameters. Quantifying their impact on soil quality is, therefore, of key importance. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of the commercial humic acid product (HA) on the hydrophysical parameters of sandy and clayey soils sampled from different sites in Slovakia. Specifically, the study hypothesizes that humic amendment will enhance particle density (ρs), dry bulk density (ρd), porosity (Φ), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), soil water repellency (SWR), and water retention capacity in sandy and clayey soils. The results of the laboratory measurements were analyzed using NCSS statistical software at a statistical significance of p < 0.05. In sandy soil, there was a statistically significant decrease in ρd and Ks and an increase in Φ and a contact angle (CA) after the application of 1 g/100 cm3 HA. At a dose of 6 g/100 cm3 HA, the values of ρs, ρd, and Ks decreased, and the Φ and CA values increased. In clayey soil, the Ks value significantly decreased by −35.5% only after the application of 6 g/100 cm3 HA. The addition of HA increased the full water capacity (FWC) and available water capacity (AWC) of clayey and sandy soils. The unreasonable use of fertilizers is a significant cause of cultivated soil cadmium (Cd) accumulation. Although there is research about the effect of fertilizers on soil cadmium (Cd) accumulation under different crops, soils, and cultivation durations locally and specifically, its relative and determinant factors are seldom comprehensively and comparatively researched and evaluated. We used meta-analysis to analyze the effects of fertilizers (mineral fertilizer N, P, K (NPK) with manure (NPKM), NPK with straw (NPKS), and the mineral fertilizer N (N), NK (NK)), crops, duration, climate, and soil texture on the Chinese soil total and available Cd change during 1987–2022. The results showed that the order of the increased soil total and available Cd change was NPKM (total: 62%–104%, available: 61%–143%) > NPKS (50%–86%, 48%–116%) > NPK (25%–50%, 35%–75%) > NK (5%–19%, 19%–33%) > N (2%–6%, 7%–31%). NPKM and NPKS significantly increased the total Cd under maize (104%, 86%) and available Cd under rice (136%, 116%). Cd changed the fastest with the NPKM cultivation duration for total Cd under maize (slope: 5.9) and available Cd under rice (6.6). The change of the soil total and available Cd had the higher value in the semiarid region, clay soils, lower pH, and long cultivations. The change of the soil total and available Cd were highest (398%, 375%) in the semiarid region for clay loam after 20–25 years of NPKM fertilization, when the pH decreased to the lowest (−1.9). According to the aggregated boosted tree analysis, the fertilizers and duration were the best explanatory variable (>53%) for the soil total and available Cd. Construction of earth fill dams offers a cost-effective solution for various purposes. However, their susceptibility to internal soil erosion, known as piping, poses a significant risk of structural failure and resultant loss of life and property. Soil stabilization emerges as a practical technique to fortify these dams against such threats. This study investigated the impact of lime on the internal erosion properties of clay soils, focusing on CH and ML soil types. Specimens of different lime content were prepared and remolded at 95% relative compaction and optimum moisture content. Hole Erosion tests at varying lime concentrations and curing durations were adapted to conduct the investigation. This investigation aims to optimize lime content and curing time for cohesive soil stabilization against internal erosion. Findings revealed that 2% and 5% of quicklime, by dry weight of the soil, effectively stabilized CH and ML soils, respectively, against internal erosion, with a two-day curing period proving optimal. Indoor triaxial tests on geogrid-reinforced clay elucidate the macroscopic changes in soil strength indices post-reinforcement, yet the underlying mechanisms of strength enhancement require further investigation. By conducting indoor triaxial tests and establishing a corresponding discrete element numerical model, we can delve into the fine-scale mechanisms of geogrid-reinforced soil. This includes analyzing changes in fine-scale parameters such as porosity, the coordination number, and contact stress between soil particles. The findings suggest that an increase in the number of geogrid reinforcement layers leads to a more pronounced improvement in peak strength and cohesion, albeit with minimal impact on the internal friction angle of the specimens. Furthermore, analysis of the triaxial test curves of reinforced soils indicates that the stress–strain relationship adheres to the Duncan–Chang model. Parameters derived from this model have been validated against experimental data, confirming their accuracy. The discrete element model was used to analyze the variations in fine-scale parameters such as porosity and coordination number. It revealed that reinforcement reduces the fluctuation amplitude of porosity and significantly increases the number of particle contacts, resulting in a denser soil structure. Further analysis of the change in contact stress between particles in the discrete element model revealed that the contact force between particles increased significantly after reinforcement and that the reinforcement played a role in restraining the soil particles and dispersing the reinforcement stress, which explains the increase in the strength of the mesh-reinforced clays from another perspective. This further elucidates the strength enhancement mechanism in geogrid-reinforced clay, offering a new perspective on the mechanical behavior and strength development of such materials. Based on the actual situation of the project on the Weihai–Yanhai Expressway section of Rongwu Expressway, the effects of water content change and the dry–wet cycle on the mechanical behavior of unsaturated clayey sandy soil were analyzed in this study. In this study, ventilated undrained triaxial shear tests were carried out on unsaturated clayey sandy soils with different water contents (6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14% and 16%). Concurrently, the soil samples were subjected to three distinct wet and dry cycle pathways (2~22%, 2~12%, and 12~22%) to gain an understanding of how the mechanical features of the soil changed under the different conditions. The test findings demonstrate that when the water content increases, the unsaturated clayey sandy soil's cohesiveness and shear strength diminish. The strength of shear decline exhibits a pattern of first being quick, followed by sluggish. The strength of shear and cohesiveness of clayey sandy soil declined under the influence of the dry and wet cycles, with the first cycle primarily affecting variations in cohesiveness and strength of shear. Furthermore, the strength of shear and cohesiveness of clayey sandy soil diminish more with increasing wet and dry cycle amplitude and upper water content limits. Lastly, the drying shrinkage and hygroscopic expansion of clay particles in clayey sandy soils during wet and dry cycles are not significant, resulting in less structural damage and deterioration of the mechanical properties of the soils. The application of sanitary sewage using subsurface drip irrigation can mitigate current challenges related to water availability and food production. However, before implementing these techniques, it is crucial to conduct studies to assess their impacts on soil and plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate chemical changes in the soil and the development of cowpeas subjected to sanitary sewage applied by drippers with different flow rates and installation depths. Drippers were positioned at various depths (0 to 30 cm) and operated with flow rates of 1.6 and 3.8 L h−1. Cowpeas were cultivated in pots with clayey soil, using synthetic sanitary sewage based on the maximum limit of nitrogen fertilization. Irrigation management was controlled in terms of soil moisture, which was monitored using TDR probes. The results indicated that reducing the depth of the drippers positively affected grain production and the development of cowpeas. Fertigation with sanitary sewage at greater depths increased soil phosphorus concentrations and base saturation. Dripper depth also influenced soil concentrations of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, while sodium concentrations decreased with greater depth. It is concluded that dripper flow rates did not impact soil chemical parameters or the agronomic characteristics of cowpeas. Skirt–pile foundations have gained widespread attention in the field of offshore engineering due to their ease of installation and high bearing capacity. In this study, the ultimate bearing capacity, pile bending moment distribution and development, cumulative deformation characteristics, and cyclic stiffness development of skirt–pile foundations were investigated using physical model tests. The experimental results indicate that the ultimate bearing capacity and deformation resistance of the foundation can effectively be improved by increasing the skirt diameter. The cumulative deformation of the skirt–piles exhibited rapid development during the initial stages of cyclic loading, eventually stabilizing. Under long-term cyclic loading, the existence of the skirt can share the bending moment, which then affects the internal force distribution of the pile foundation along the axis. The pile foundation's cyclic stiffness reduces as the loading cycles increase and increases as the skirt diameter and length grow. Meanwhile, the horizontal cyclic stiffness decreases as the number of cycles increases, stabilizing after 3000 cycles. This study can not only deepen the understanding of the deformation laws of skirt–pile foundations in clay soil but also offers some references for the design of offshore pile foundations. The present study has focused on stabilizing the soils of the embankments and improving the mechanical properties of gravel in subbases of pavements with different contents of bottom ash from thermal power plants and low percentages of lime. The density, humidity, simple resistance strength and bearing capacity of the new materials resulting from this combination have been studied. The results indicated that the optimal proportion of bottom ash added to the analyzed soil is 15%, while the optimal addition of lime is 1% for application in embankments and 2% for application in road subgrades. In clay soil that has a low simple resistance strength when 25% of bottom ash is added without lime, it can double the resistance. In the case of the gravel evaluated, it was found that the optimal ratio between the addition of bottom ash and lime is 6.5. In conclusion, it can be noted that soil that does not have any resistance when certain percentages of bottom ash are added, its properties are improved to be used in embankments. Clayey soils exhibit significant volumetric changes in response to variations in water content. The swelling pressure of clayey soils is a critical parameter for evaluating the stability and performance of structures built on them, facilitating the development of appropriate design methodologies and mitigation strategies to ensure their long-term integrity and safety. We present a dataset comprising maximum swelling pressure values from 759 compacted soil samples, compiled from 16 articles published between 1994 and 2022. The dataset is classified into two main groups: 463 samples of natural clays and 296 samples of bentonite and bentonite mixtures, providing data on various types of soils and their properties. Different swelling test methods, including zero swelling, swell consolidation, restrained swell, double oedometer, free swelling, constant volume oedometer, UPC isochoric cell, isochoric oedometer and consolidometer, were employed to measure the maximum swelling pressure. The comprehensive nature of the dataset enhances its applicability for geotechnical projects. This paper analyzes the bearing capacity of two-layered soil medium using finite element (FE) software ABAQUS/CAE 2023. Although geotechnical engineers design foundations for layered soil, majorly current geotechnical studies emphasize single homogenous soil. So, this research has significant novelty as it focuses on layered soil and adds to the current literature. A nonlinear FE model was prepared and analyzed to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of two-layered soil (sandy soil over clayey soil). The Drucker–Prager and Mohr–Coulomb models were used to represent sandy soil and clayey soil layers, respectively. Strip footing material properties were considered isotropic and linearly elastic. This study performed parametric studies to understand the effects of thickness, unit weight, and the modulus of the elasticity of sandy soil on the ultimate soil bearing capacity. Additionally, it also analyzed the effect of the cohesive strength of clayey soil on layered soil bearing capacity. Results showed that an increase in sandy soil layer thickness strengthens the layered soil, and thus, improves the bearing capacity of soil. Increasing the sandy soil layer thickness over footing width (h1/B) ratio from 0.15 to 2.0 improved the ultimate bearing capacities with elastic settlements of 350 mm and 250 mm by 145.62% and 101.66%, respectively. Additionally, for a thicker sandy soil layer, an increase in the unit weight and modulus of the elasticity of sandy soil led to higher ultimate bearing capacity. Furthermore, it was concluded that an increase in clayey soil's cohesive strength from 20 kPa to 30 kPa resulted in a 24.31% and 3.47% increase in soil bearing capacity for h1/B = 0.15 and h1/B = 2.0, respectively. In this study, the performance of unpaved road sections over soft clay soil geosynthetic-reinforced and stabilized with rock fill layer was evaluated using repeated plate loading tests. A total of 10 field tests were carried out using a circular model rigid plate with a diameter of 0.30 m. The parameters investigated included the location and type of geosynthetics and loading conditions (number of loading cycle and traffic loading condition). Based on the test results, the least deformation was observed in the rockfill section. The geocell placed at a depth of one-third thickness of the granular fill layer from the top showed improved performance and was more effective as compared with other geosynthetic reinforcements. However, for granular fill geosynthetic-reinforced or stabilized with rock fill layer, the results demonstrate an improvement in the rutting performance of the pavement and the definite trend of increasing reloading elastic modulus, depending on the traffic loading situation. It has been also observed that the use of geocell or geogrid reinforcement in granular fill layer or more rigid rockfill layer provides an important increase in the modulus improvement ratio (MIR) by at least 36%, 45% and 60% compared to the granular fill section, respectively. The theoretical and practical studies of the cyclic loads resulting from the movement and passage of trains on the unsaturated subgrade to determine the effect of the degree of saturation and moisture content on the foundations and infrastructure of the railway lines, especially the settlement in the railway lines as a result of the development of the train loads. Thirty-six laboratory experiments were carried out using models that simulate a railway with nearly half the scale of the real one, using an iron box of (1.5 × 1.0 × 1.0) meters and a layer of clay soil with a thickness of 0.5 m representing the base layer, were constructed inside it. Above it, there is a layer of crushed stone representing a 0.2 m thick ballast, topped by a rail line of 0.8 m long installed on three sleeper beams with dimensions of 0.9 m (0.1 × 0.1 m). The subgrade layer has been constructed at different saturation degrees as follows: 100, 80, 70, and 60%. The tests were carried out using different load amplitudes and frequencies. These experiments investigated the effect of the subgrade degree of saturation on the value of the stresses generated on the surface and the middle (vertical and lateral stresses) and the settlement of the subgrade. In the case of unsaturated subgrade soil, an increase in load frequency has a clear effect on increasing the generated stresses in the subgrade layer, especially with lower saturation levels. However, the results and measurements of these experiments found that the load frequency almost had no effect on the values of the stresses generated on the surface and inside the subgrade layer with a 100% degree of saturation. The results of the investigation demonstrated that, while load frequency had a minimal effect on track-panel settlement, it increased with the load amplitude and subgrade soil saturation degree. The change of settlement of the track panel with the number of cycles has a high rate at the beginning; after a while from that, it decreases gradually until, after some value of the number of cycles, the settlement changes at a very low rate and gradually. In addressing the challenges of high energy consumption and low efficiency in fertilization borehole drilling for clayey soils in southern orchards, this study utilizes the Discrete Element Method to establish a simulation model for clayey soils. Through this approach, we identify an optimal set of operational parameters that significantly reduces energy consumption. By utilizing simulation technology to model the drilling process, we analyzed the impact of rotation speed and feed rate on the torque and resistance of the drilling apparatus. Initially, this paper describes field measurements of particle parameters in soils from southern orchards. Subsequently, utilizing the Discrete Element Method and particle contact theory, we established a simulation model to represent the interactions between soil and soil, as well as soil and auger in the soil environment of the southern region. For the Southern orchard clay with a moisture content of 16.8% and a measured angle of repose of 35.55°, parameter calibration was performed. The contact model "Hertz-Mindlin with Johnson-Kendall-Roberts" was selected in EDEM. Using Design Expert, a regression model variance analysis was applied to the discrete element model parameters, leading to the determination of the optimal values for significant soil model parameters. The soil JKR surface energy is 5.85 J·m−2, with a soil–soil restitution coefficient of 0.65 and a soil–steel static friction coefficient of 0.5. Subsequently, discrete element simulation experiments on the drilling apparatus were conducted in EDEM, considering various rotation speeds and feed rates. The simulation analysis indicates that the torque consistently increases with higher rotation speeds, with a maximum relative error of 7%. The torque initially rises from zero to a maximum value, then gradually decreases to a low value, followed by a rapid increase to a higher value, and finally drops back down. This cycle repeats in the observed pattern. The total force experienced reaches its minimum average value of 200 N at a feed rate of 0.05 m/s. Simulation test results indicate that, among the three forces acting on the auger (vertical resistance, horizontal resistance, and lateral resistance), vertical resistance is the primary factor contributing to power consumption. As the rotation speed increases, the maximum value of vertical resistance continues to rise, while horizontal resistance and lateral resistance exhibit a declining trend. As the feed rate increases, the maximum values of resistance in all three directions also increase. When the feed rate exceeds 0.05 m/s, the maximum lateral resistance experiences a sharp increase. Through comprehensive analysis, the optimal operational parameters for borehole fertilization are determined to be a rotation speed of 100 r·min−1 and a feed rate of 0.05 m/s. The use of organic fertilizers to replace chemically synthesized fertilizers has assumed an important role in managing plant nutrition and soil fertility. The various organic matrices currently available as organic byproducts and digestates are relatively abundant and have shown promising effects in terms of plant-available nutrients. However, like mineral fertilizers, organic fertilizers must be carefully managed to avoid negative effects on the environment, especially when they are repeatedly applied over time. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of the single (DIG) and repeated application (DIGP) of solid anaerobic digestates compared to an unamended control (CTR) on the denitrifying enzymatic activity (DEA), which is responsible for nitrous oxide emissions into the atmosphere, and some related soil properties, such as total soluble nitrogen (TSN), nitrate (NO3−-N), extractable carbon (Cextr), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and basal respiration (Rbas), for a period of ~3 months after application. The application of solid anaerobic digestates progressively boosts N and C concentrations in the soil, with the degree of enhancement directly correlated with the frequency of application over the sampling period. Depending on the textural properties of soils, there was a notable rise in denitrification enzyme activity (DEA), particularly during the DIGP treatment, suggesting that clay soils are highly susceptible to denitrification under suitable conditions. The results of this study recommend the careful management of soils subjected to repeated digestate amendment to prevent the occurrence of conditions conducive to denitrification and the promotion of N2O emissions. In Mediterranean countries characterized by increasingly extended hot and dry periods, olive trees are often conventionally practiced in low fertility and rainfed soils. This study investigated over a 15-month period how conventional tillage, combined with or without incorporated solid digestate, and no tillage affected selected soil properties, photosynthetic activity and productivity of mature olive trees growing in highly clayey acid soil with an unbalanced nutrient content and Mn excess. Neither in soil nor in drupes were Mn, Fe, Cu and Al contents affected by the managements. However, in soil, exchangeable Mn that was always larger than 200 mg kg−1 threshold and unbalanced Ca, Mg, and K contents were evidenced in all treatments. Non-tilled soil showed the highest (p < 0.05) stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate, and the highest (p < 0.05) fruits and oil yields. Instead, conventional tillage negatively (p < 0.05) affected plant physiology and productivity, likely due to the tilled increase in aeration, enhancing soil water loss and organic C mineralization. Conversely, digestate addition increased TOC, TN and EC. Stomatal conductance, the photosynthetic rate and plant yield significantly recovered (albeit not to no-tillage values) in tillage combined with incorporated digestate, suggesting that digestate-derived organic matter created soil conditions less constraining to plant growth and productivity than the conventional tillage did. Natural source zone depletion (NSZD) is the main process of LNAPL (Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) removal under natural conditions. The NSZD rates assessed ranged from 0.55 to 11.55 kg·m−2·a−1 (kilograms per square meter per year) in previous studies. However, most of these data were obtained from sandy sites, with few clayey sites. To gain knowledge of NSZD in clayey soil sites, the study assessed the NSZD of a petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated clayey soil site in China, combining the concentration gradient method with metagenomic sequencing technology. The results show that the abundance of methane-producing key enzyme mcrA gene in the source zone was more abundant than in background areas, which suggests that there was methanogenesis, the key process of NSZD. The concentration gradients of oxygen and carbon dioxide existed only in shallow soil (<0.7 m), which suggests that there was a thin methane oxidation zone in the shallow zone. The calculated NSZD rates range from 0.23 to 1.15 kg·m−2·a−1, which fall within the moderate range compared to previous NSZD sites. This study expands the knowledge of NSZD in clayey soil and enriches the attenuation rate data for contaminated sites, which is of significant importance in managing petroleum contaminants. The aim of this study was to propose a new approach to determine the liquid limit and plastic limit of clay soils by considering electrical conductivity (EC) measurements. The proposed method included incorporating a new parameter, F, which is the ratio of the volumetric water contents of diffuse double layer (DDL) water and free water. In addition, the EC parameter, σ, was considered as the ratio of electrical surface conductivity and electrical conductivity of water. The changes in the thickness of DDL (χ) were also assessed to obtain corresponding equations to establish a connection with clay mineralogy, water content, and specific gravity in the final prediction. Three-dimensional surface analyses were conducted to find a correlation among F, σ, and χ to identify an appropriate method to predict liquid limit and plastic limit. The study was conducted with 39 different types of samples, and the outcomes from the EC approach were validated against the conventional methods. Overall, the coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.90, and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient, (LCCC) = 0.91, were obtained for liquid limit prediction, whereas R2 = 0.64 and LCCC = 0.80 were obtained for plastic limit determination.
