The fatigue crack growth properties of G20Mn5QT cast steel and corresponding butt welds, using compact tension specimens, were monitored and investigated via acoustic emission (AE) techniques. Fatigue crack growth is a combination of cyclic plastic deformations before the crack tip, tensile crack fractures, and shear crack fractures. The cyclic plastic deformations release the maximum amount of energy, which accounts for half of the total energy, and the second-largest number of AE signals, which are of the continuous-wave type. The tensile crack fractures release the second-largest amount of energy and the largest number of AE signals, which are of the burst-wave type. The shear crack fractures release the least amount of energy and the lowest number of AE signals, which are similar to the burst type, albeit with a relatively longer rise time and duration. Crack tip advancement can be regarded as a discontinuous process. The critical area before the crack tip brittlely ruptures when the fatigue damage caused by cyclic plastic deformations reaches critical status. The ruptures produce a large number of tensile crack fractures and rare shear crack fractures. Through fractography observation, the shear crack fractures occur probabilistically around defects caused by casting or welding, which lead to stress and strain in the local complex. This paper presents the results of research from the renovation of functional parts of crane wheel surfaces. The aim of the research was to verify the possibilities of changing the chemical composition of the additive materials for submerged arc cladding, in order to increase the resistance of the wheel surfaces to wear. The base material of the crane wheel was heat-treated carbon steel for castings, mat. no. 1.0553. The renovation process was carried out on three equal wheels. Conventionally used additive material, the same one used for the interlayer and two covering layers, was used on one wheel. On two other wheels, newly increased tubular wires with a higher proportion of carbide-forming additives (Cr, Mo) were used for the carbide coating of two covering layers, in addition to their conventional additive material. Low-alloy additive material was applied to the newly elevated wires. The quality of the clads was assessed using non-destructive tests. Subsequently, microstructural analysis was carried out on the test samples taken from the renovated wheels, by means of light microscopy. On the cross cuttings, the course of hardness was evaluated using Vickers analysis. The resistance of functional surfaces to adhesion wear was evaluated based on weight losses measured using the AMSler experimental equipment. The results of the experiments showed an increase in the tribological resistance of the surfaces, specifically by 45% due to the newly developed wire C1 and by 18% due to wire B1, and it is therefore possible to recommend renovation. Laser beam remelting is a relatively simple and highly effective technique for the physical modification of surfaces to improve resistance to cavitation erosion. In this study, we investigated the effect of laser remelting on the surface of cast stainless steel with 0.40% C, 25% Cr, 20% Ni, and 1.5% Si on cavitation erosion behavior in tap water. The investigation was conducted using a piezoceramic crystal vibrator apparatus. Base laser beam parameters were carefully selected to result in a defect-free surface (no porosity, material burn, cracks) with hardness capable of generating better resistance to cavitation erosion. The experimental results were compared with those of the reference material. Surface morphology and microstructure evolution after cavitation tests were analyzed using an optical metallographic microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and hardness tests to explore the mechanism of improving surface degradation resistance. The conducted research demonstrated that surfaces modified by laser remelting exhibit a 4.8–5.1 times greater increase in cavitation erosion resistance due to the homogenization of chemical composition and refinement of the microstructure, while maintaining the properties of the base material. Longitudinal crack defects are a frequent occurrence on the surface of thin slabs during the high-speed continuous casting process. Therefore, this study undertakes a detailed analysis of the solidification characteristics of hyper-peritectic steel thin slabs. By establishing a three-dimensional heat transfer numerical model of the thin slab, the formation mechanism of longitudinal cracks caused by uneven growth of the initial shell is determined. Based on the mechanism of longitudinal crack formation, by adjusting the performance parameters of the mold flux, the contradiction between the heat transfer control and lubrication improvement of the mold flux is fully coordinated, further reducing the incidence of longitudinal cracks on the surface of the casting thin slab. The results show that, using the optimized mold flux, the basicity increases from 1.60 to 1.68, the F- mass fraction increases from 10.67% to 11.22%, the Na2O mass fraction increases from 4.35% to 5.28%, the Li2O mass fraction increases from 0.68% to 0.75%, and the carbon mass fraction reduces from 10.86% to 10.47%. The crystallization performance and rheological properties of the mold flux significantly improve, reducing the heat transfer performance while ensuring the lubrication ability of the molten slag. After optimizing the mold flux, a surface detection system was used to statistically analyze the longitudinal cracks on the surface of the casting thin slab. The proportion of longitudinal cracks (crack length/steel coil length, where each coil produced is about 32 m long) on the surface of the thin slab decreases from 0.056% to 0.031%, and the surface quality of the thin slab significantly improves. In this paper, issues related to the technology of compound castings composed of two parts, i.e., the working layer and the supporting part, made of X46Cr13 high-chromium steel and EN-GJL-HB 255 grey cast iron, respectively, in a liquid–solid system by pre-installing a monolithic insert in the mould cavity are presented. As a part of the research, the mechanism of formation of transitional zones in the bonding area of the above-mentioned two alloys was identified and described. It was shown that the phenomenon that determines the formation of a permanent bond between the joined materials is the transport of C and heat from the "high-carbon and hot" material of the supporting part poured into the mould in the form of liquid cast iron to the "low-carbon and cold" material of the working layer placed in the form of a steel monolithic insert inside the mould cavity. In the paper, the suitability of the compound castings technology developed for use in the coke industry is also presented. Full-size high-chromium steel–grey cast iron compound casting plates designed for the coke quenching car lining were positively verified in real coke plant operating conditions. ŠTORE STEEL Ltd. is one of the three steel plants in Slovenia. Continuous cast 180 mm × 180 mm billets can undergo cooling to room temperature using a turnover cooling bed. They can also be cooled down under hoods or heat treated to reduce residual stresses. Additional operations of heat treatment from 36 h up to 72 h and cooling of the billets for 24 h, with limited capacities (with only two heat treatment furnaces and only six hoods), drastically influence productivity. Accordingly, the casting must be carefully planned (i.e., the main thing is casting in sequences), while the internal quality of the billets (i.e., the occurrence of inner defects) may be compromised. Also, the stock of billets can increase dramatically. As a result, it was necessary to consider the abandoning of cooling under hoods and heat treatment of billets. Based on the collected scrap data after ultrasonic examination of rolled bars, linear regression and genetic programming were used for prediction of the occurrence of inner defects. Based on modeling results, cooling under hoods and heat treatment of billets were abandoned at the casting of several steel grades. Accordingly, the casting sequences increased, and the stock of billets decreased drastically while the internal quality of the rolled bars remained the same. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The corrosion resistance of bearing materials is crucial for the long-term service and high precision of modern equipment, and has aroused widespread research interest. Inoculation treatment is beneficial for improving the mechanical properties of GCr15 bearing steel, but its impact on corrosion behavior remains to be investigated. In the present work, the influence of inoculation treatment on the corrosion morphology, open circuit potential, impedance spectrum, and polarization curve evolution of GCr15 steel was studied through in situ corrosion morphology analysis and electrochemical testing. The results showed that the samples treated after inoculation showed a reduced tendency for pitting corrosion and an obviously improved corrosion resistance. This improvement is related to the transformation of columnar grains into equiaxed grains during the inoculation process, which reduces the amount and distribution of inclusions and pores, thereby delaying the rapid development of pitting corrosion. This article investigated the influence of copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) on atmospheric corrosion in gray cast iron under simulated marine conditions. The goal was to compare the effect of Cu and Ni addition in castings with weathering steels. Selected alloys were cast, cut, prepared, and heat-treated for microstructure homogenization. Accelerated corrosion tests were conducted using a salt spray chamber. Corroded samples were analyzed for corrosion thickness and deposits using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical techniques. The results indicate that alloying elements significantly affect corrosion processes. In the long-term, Cu had a greater impact on the corrosion mechanisms than Ni. Both Cu and Ni exhibited similar effects on the corrosion mechanisms in gray cast iron and weathering steels. In the initial and final stages, the behavior was comparable to that of weathering steels, but in the intermediate stage, it differed from the literature, suggesting the presence of an additional mechanism between these stages. This study proposed a new method for homogenizing continuous casting blooms based on solidification simulation calculations and industrial tests. The text describes a theoretical analysis of the solidification route of a cast billet of high-carbon alloy steel (B300A) under different process conditions. It summarizes the changing law of different under-pressure process parameters and under-pressure efficiency. The text also presents a solution to the seriousness of center shrinkage defects in the continuous casting of a large square billet of high-carbon alloy steel with the synergistic control technology of mixed light and heavy mixing under pressure. The study indicates that the center carbon segregation index of a high carbon steel continuous casting billet is 1.05, with a carbon extreme difference of not more than 0.08% and a proportion of 98.4%. Additionally, the center shrinkage is not more than a 0.5 level with a proportion of 99.5%. Meanwhile, the internal quality of cast billets has been improved, allowing for the rolling of large-size bars with a low consolidation ratio. The pass rate for internal ultrasonic flaw detection using the GB/T4162A grade is now higher than 99.95%, significantly reducing process costs and improving production efficiency for continuous casting and rolling. Duplex steel and cast steels have a wide range of applications in many industrial sectors, for example, oil extraction, printing, petrochemical industry, energy—exhaust gases desulphurization systems, seawater desalination plants, and the shipbuilding industry. The machine elements can be produced with different techniques, which determine the operational properties. A material with the same chemical composition made as a casting will have worse mechanical properties than, for example, a forged element. This depends on the microstructure, its fragmentation and its morphology. However, the costs of casting are lower than, for example, forging, and, in addition, not all shapes obtainable in the casting process can be made using metal–plastic working methods. This article presents research results concerning the influence of the burnishing process on the properties of the duplex cast steel surface layer. The purpose of the research was to verify the impact of static pressure roller burnishing (SPRB) parameters on the wear of the surface layer of duplex cast steel. The subject of the research was cast steel in the GX2CrNiMoN22-5-3 grade—according to PN-EN 10283:2019—that was burnished using 15 variants of technological parameters. Then, the samples were subjected to surface wear tests using the INSTRON 8874 device. On the basis of the observed wear appearances, the acting wear mechanisms are defined and evaluated according their contribution to the wear behavior. Detailed information about the wear phenomena will help industries to minimize their maintenance losses related to surface wear. The possibility of shaping surface properties by mechanical burnishing is part of the current direction of surface engineering development. This paper investigates the casting defects of a stainless steel pump impeller manufactured through the sand casting process. The material characterization of austenitic steel AISI 316L was initially carried out, which examined the chemical composition of the casting and its microstructure. The next step was to determine the cause of the casting defects using numerical simulations. The numerical simulations were performed using ProCAST software (Version 18.0). Initial results of the filling and solidification simulations were conducted using the parameters employed in the actual casting process, revealing casting defects in corresponding locations. The casting process was subsequently modified to achieve improved results. This involved reconstructing the gating system, redesigning the riser, and incorporating a cylindrical chiller. The results show that the modified casting process significantly reduces the occurrence of defects in the final product. The study provides useful insights into the analysis and modification of the casting process for stainless steel pump impellers produced through sand casting. Exploring the mechanism of the α-ferrite precipitation process on high-temperature properties plays an important guiding role in avoiding slab cracks and effectively regulating quality. In this work, in situ observation of the α-ferrite sustained precipitation behavior for peritectic steel during the austenitic phase transition process has been investigated using high-temperature confocal scanning laser microscopy. Meanwhile, the high-temperature evolution of the phase fractions during the phase transition process was quantitatively analyzed based on the high-temperature expansion experiment using the peak separation method. Furthermore, the high-temperature properties variations of the casting slab during the α-ferrite sustained precipitation process were investigated with the Gleeble thermomechanical simulator. The results show that the film-like ferrite precipitated along the austenite grain boundaries at the initial stage of phase transition, then needle-like ferrite initiates rapid precipitation on film-like ferrite when the average thickness reaches 15~20 μm. Hot ductility reached a minimum at the ferrite phase fraction fα = 10~15%, while high-temperature properties returned to a higher level after fα > 40~45%. The appearance of a considerable amount of needle-like ferrite and grain refinement effectively improves the high-temperature properties with the α-ferrite precipitation process advances. The bearing steel's high-temperature brittle zone (1250 °C–1100 °C), second brittle zone (1100 °C–950 °C), and low-temperature brittle zone (800 °C–600 °C) were determined by the reduction in area and true fracture toughness. The crack sensitivity was strongest at temperatures of 1200 °C, 1000 °C, and 600 °C, respectively. Various experimental and computational methods were used to establish the phase type, microstructure, size, and mechanical properties of carbides in bearing steel. The critical conditions for crack initiation in the matrix (FCC-Fe, FCC-Fe, and BCC-Fe)/carbides (striped Fe0.875Cr0.125C, netted Fe2.36Cr0.64C, and spherical Fe5.25Cr1.75C3) were also investigated. The values for the high-temperature brittle zone, the second brittle zone, and the low-temperature brittle zone were 13.85 MPa and 8.21 × 10−3, 4.64 MPa and 6.52 × 10−3, and 17.86 MPa and 1.86 × 10−2, respectively. These were calculated using Eshelby's theory and ABAQUS 2021 version software. The ability of the three carbides to cause crack propagation was measured quantitatively by energy diffusion: M3C > MC > M7C3. This study analyzed the mechanism of carbide precipitation on the formation of high-temperature cracks in bearing steel casting. It also provided the critical conditions for carbide/matrix interface cracks in bearing steel continuous casting, thus providing effective support for improving the quality of bearing steel casting. In advancing special materials, seamless integration into existing production chains is paramount. Beyond creating improved alloy compositions, precision in processing methods is crucial to preserve desired properties without drawbacks. The synergy between alloy formulation and processing techniques is pivotal for maximizing the benefits of innovative materials. By focusing on advanced deep processing technology for small ingots of modified 12% Cr stainless steel, this paper delves into the transformation of cast ingot steel structures using radial shear rolling (RSR) processing. Through a series of nine passes, rolling ingots from a 32 mm to a 13 mm diameter with a total elongation factor of 6.02, a notable shift occurred. This single-operation process effectuated a substantial change in sample structure, transitioning from a coarse-grained cast structure (0.5–1.5 mm) to an equiaxed fine-grained structure with peripheral grain sizes of 1–4 μm and an elongated rolling texture in the axial part of the bar. Earlier studies have shown that 30 L steel, used for the manufacture of hydraulic machinery equipment elements, has greater resistance to cavitation wear than 20 GL steel. This paper presents the results of experimental studies of the solid particle erosion resistance of 30 L structural steel samples with different surface modifications based on nitriding and boriding processes. The characteristics of the modified near-surface layers were determined. The results of the solid particle erosion resistance tests carried out according to the ASTM G76-13 standard are presented. The research results demonstrated that boriding processes worsen the solid particle erosion resistance of 30 L steel at flow impact angles of 30° and 90°. All the considered variants of surface nitriding at an impact angle of 90° do not worsen the solid particle erosion resistance of 30 L steel samples, while at an impact angle of 30°, they increase the solid particle erosion resistance by at least 10–20%. Argon injection is usually applied in the continuous casting mold to prevent submerged entry nozzle (SEN) clogging. However, the stability of the slag–steel interface is affected by the injected gas, even leading to the formation of the slag eye. A computational fluid dynamics–discrete bubble model–volume of fluid (CFD-DBM-VOF) model is established to predict the argon–slag–steel–air four-phase flow in the continuous casting mold. The bubble behavior is treated with the Lagrangian approach considering bubble coalescence and breakup. The movement behavior of the slag–steel interface is analyzed with and without argon blowing, validated with the water model. The results show that the large bubble tends to float up into the slag–steel interface near the SEN with argon injection, resulting in fluctuations in the slag–steel interface near the SEN. The bubble distribution, flow field, fluctuation height of the slag–steel interface and configuration of the slag eye in the mold are analyzed. Furthermore, the effect on the casting speed, gas flow rate and thickness of the slag layer is obtained based on the result. This paper presents the results of studies on the occurrence of transient disturbances in the hydrodynamic system of a tundish feeding area and their effect on the casting process. In addition, the effect of changes in the level of superheating of the molten steel fed to the tundish on the evolution of the hydrodynamic system was analyzed. The studies were conducted with the use of a physical model of the tundish and a numerical model, representing the industrial conditions of the process of the continuous casting of steel. When a tundish is fed through a modified ladle shroud that slows down the momentum of the stream, this creates favorable conditions for the emergence of asymmetrical flow within the working tundish volume. The higher the degree of molten steel reheating in the ladle furnace, the stronger the evolution of the hydrodynamic structures in the tundish during the casting process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The submerged entry nozzle (SEN) plays an important role in the continuous casting production process. It is a cast refractory pipe fitting installed in the lower part of the tundish and inserted below the molten steel level of the mold. It not only affects the speed of molten steel flow, but is also prone to nodules and affects production. In the present work, the flow behavior of molten steel in a traditional nozzle and that in a new type of nozzle whose inner wall was distributed with arrays of hemispherical crowns were studied by means of both physical simulation (using a water model) and numerical simulation (using ANSYS CFX) based on the prototype of a production continuous casting slab mold. Both experimental and numerical simulation results show that, compared with the traditional nozzle, the impact depth generated by the new-type nozzle in the mold is reduced by 21.06–26.03 cm, the impact angle is reduced by 14–17 degrees, and swirl flow was generated inside the new-type nozzle, which not only improves the flow characteristics inside the submerged entry nozzle and changes the dead zone size in the submerged entry nozzle, but also improves the velocity distribution at the outlet of the nozzle and minimizes the possibility of nodulation. In addition, in contrast to the traditional nozzle that generates flat body-shaped jets of molten steel flow, the new-type nozzle produces baseball glove-shaped jets that penetrate shallower into the molten steel bath in the mold, which significantly reduces the outlet velocity and is conducive to the floating of inclusions. This research was devoted to unveiling the strain rate sensitivity (SRS) of G18NiCrMo3-6 cast steel in tension/compression asymmetry. For that purpose, detailed mechanical characterization tests were conducted providing a process window covering quasi-static and medium strain rate regimes (0.001, 0.1, 10 [s−1]) in tension and compression states. Through this experimental effort, the SRS of the material could be extracted by a function of strain and the strain rate which enabled us to create a mathematical expression to easily be implemented as a state variable for constitutive material modeling. Finally, a pressure- and rate-dependent constitutive material model on the basis of the Cocks'89 yield locus definition was created using a subroutine (UMAT) file and the material parameters were verified with respect to the experimental data. The UMAT file also takes into account the tension/compression asymmetry in yielding to handle the effect of the porous media plasticity concept. In this paper, a micromechanical model was developed to predict the residual stress–strain state that is generated around nodules of a ferritic ductile cast iron during solidification. A finite element analysis was performed on a reference volume element of the material to analyze the local strain development, having modeled both matrix and nodule as deformable bodies in contact. The behavior of the nodule was assumed linear–elastic because of the low stresses to which it is subjected during cooling. On the other hand, elasto-plastic viscous behavior was considered for the matrix, considering both the primary and secondary creep regimes. To make up for the lack of information on the physical–thermomechanical properties of the constituents, the available literature data were integrated with the results obtained from the CALPHAD methodology applied to both cast iron and the steel that constitutes its matrix. The micromechanical model was validated by comparing the resulting residual strains with experimental data available in the literature for a ferritic ductile cast iron. Then, it was used for analyzing the correlation between the solidification history and the mechanical response of cast iron in terms of the uniaxial stress–strain curve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The submitted article deals with the use of physical and numerical modelling to study the process of the steel flow in an asymmetric five-strand tundish that continuously casts steel. For the purposes of physical modelling, a 1:4-scale plexiglass model was used as the operating tundish, and for numerical modelling, the geometry of the operating tundish was created on a 1:1 scale. A model liquid (water) was used in the physical modelling of the melt flow process, while liquid steel was used as the standard flowing medium in the numerical modelling. We assessed the relevant operating parameters influencing the characteristics of the flow of the bath in the tundish—the shape of the turbulence inhibitor, the position of the ladle shroud in relation to the turbulence inhibitor and the distance between the ladle shroud orifice and the bottom of the turbulence inhibitor. The preliminary results show that optimal steel flow characteristic results are achieved by using the TI3-C configuration. The results from both modelling methods achieved the same characteristics, therefore verifying the results of each other and demonstrating that when taken together, the results of physical and numerical modelling can be considered sufficiently informative. Niyama and solid fraction criteria are used to predict the solidification porosity and microporosity in computing simulation of casting processes. The solid fraction permits us to determine the areas that solidify last and that are a candidate for presenting porosity if a feeding system is not correctly designed. The Niyama criterion is locally obtained based on the thermal and cooling gradients at a point of the liquid casting. The Niyama value at a casting point varies rapidly from low rates to high ones during the last part of the metal solidification, which demands that the percentage of solidification of the metal is defined to determine the Niyama number. In addition, the Niyama threshold that establishes the soundness of the workpiece can vary according to the nature of the metal or the casting system. In this paper, a methodology to determine the solidification percentage is presented. The method is based on the Niyama number evolution during the solidification process at different key points. These points are validated by the solid fraction criterion as healthy or, on the contrary, as candidates for containing porosity. In addition, some considerations of the solid fraction criterion are visited since the threshold value for which the isolation of the last solidification areas can be defined is not clear. The research is validated by the empirical casting criteria existing in the literature for obtaining sound parts and applied to low-carbon steel bars produced by sand casting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Steel is mainly produced through continuous casting; molten steel flows into the mold from the tundish, where it cools and then enters the secondary cooling zone, ultimately solidifying into a billet. During the continuous casting production process, the quality of the casting billet is mainly related to the lubrication state of the coated slag. In the upper part of the mold, the consumption of liquid protective slag directly affects the friction state of the initial solidified billet shell. Therefore, the flow and fluctuation characteristics of coated slag in the meniscus area are very important. There is limited research on the flow and fluctuation characteristics of coated slag in the meniscus area, and little consideration has been given to the shape of the meniscus. In this work, a two-dimensional numerical model for the flow and fluctuation of coated slag in the meniscus region was established, and the transient flow velocity of protective slag and molten steel at each moment of the vibration cycle was obtained, as well as the fluctuation of the slag/steel interface in the meniscus region. The results show that when the surface mold vibrated upwards, the protective slag in the meniscus area flowed clockwise. When the mold moved downwards, the protective slag in the slag pool generated a counterclockwise flow vortex. When the mold was in a positive slip state, the negative pressure formed by the upward flow of the protective slag on the meniscus and the inertia force of steel liquid pushed the meniscus toward the inner wall of the mold. During negative slip, the flow of coated slag generated positive pressure on the slag/steel interface, pushing the meniscus toward the steel liquid, and at the initial moment of negative slip, the steel liquid overflowed into the slag channel. The continuous steel casting process must simultaneously meet the requirements for production performance, quality and safety against breakouts. Knowing the thickness of the solidified shell, particularly at the exit of the mould, is useful for the casting process control and breakout prevention. Shell thickness is difficult to measure during casting; in practice, it is predicted by indirect methods and models. But after undesired rupture of the shell and leakage of the liquid steel, it is possible to measure the shell thickness directly. This article is focused on the problem of the growth and measurement of the solid shell obtained after the breakout of a round block with a diameter of 410 mm. An original methodology was developed in which a surface mesh of points was created from the individual scanned parts of the block using a 3D laser scanner. Research has shown differences of up to 6 mm between the maximum and minimum shell thickness at the mould exit. A regression function of the average shell thickness on time was found. The endurance limit of structural mechanical components is affected by the residual stress state, which depends strongly on the manufacturing process. In general, compressive residual stresses tend to result in an increased fatigue strength. Post-manufacturing processes such as shot peening or vibratory finishing may achieve such a compressive residual stress state. But within complex components, manufacturing-process-based imperfections severely limit the fatigue strength. Thus, the interactions of imperfections, residual stress state and material strength are key aspects in fatigue design. In this work, cast steel and aluminium alloys are investigated, each of them in vibratory finished and polished surface condition. A layer-based fatigue assessment concept is extended towards stable effective mean stress state considering the elastic–plastic material behaviour. Murakami's concept was applied to incorporate the effect of hardness change and residual stress state. Residual stress relaxation is determined by elastic–plastic simulations invoking a combined hardening model. If the effective stress ratio within the local layer-based fatigue strength is evaluated as critical distance value, a sound calculation of fatigue strength can be achieved. Based on a previous concept that has been successfully applied to the sizing optimization of truss and frame structures, this work extends and improves the strain energy criterion in the topology optimization of 2D continuum structures under a single displacement constraint. To make the proposed methodology transparent to other researchers and at the same time meaningful, the numerical value of the displacement constraint was taken to be equal to that obtained through the well-known Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method under the same boundary conditions and the same external forces. The fatigue strength of cast steel components is severely affected by manufacturing process-based bulk and surface imperfections. As these defect structures possess an arbitrary spatial shape, the utilization of local assessment methods is encouraged to design for service strength. This work applies the elastic–plastic strain energy density concept to study the fatigue strength properties of a high-strength cast steel alloy G12MnMo7-4+QT. A fatigue design limit curve is derived based on non-linear finite element analyses which merges experimental high-cycle fatigue results of unnotched and notched small-scale specimens tested at three different stress ratios into a unique narrow scatter band characterized by a scatter index of 1 : T Δ W ¯ (t) = 2.43 . A comparison to the linear–elastic assessment conducted in a preceding study reveals a significant improvement in prediction accuracy which is assigned to the consideration of the elastic–plastic material behaviour. In order to reduce computational effort, a novel approximation is presented which facilitates the calculation of the elastic–plastic strain energy density based on linear–elastic finite element results and Neuber's concept. Validation of the assessment framework reveals a satisfying agreement to non-linear simulation results, showing an average root mean square deviation of only approximately eight percent in terms of total strain energy density. In order to study the effect of bulk and surface imperfections on the fatigue strength of cast steel components, defect-afflicted large-scale specimens are assessed by the presented elastic–plastic framework, yielding fatigue strength results which merge into the scatter band of the derived design limit curve. As the conducted fatigue assessment is based solely on linear–elastic two-dimensional simulations, the computational effort is substantially decreased. Within the present study, a reduction of approximately 400 times in computation time is observed. Hence, the established assessment framework presents an engineering-feasible method to evaluate the fatigue life of imperfective cast steel components based on rapid total strain energy density calculations. Advanced power cycles—such as the supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) cycle—have the potential to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of concentrated solar thermal power (CST) plants by significantly boosting their overall solar-to-electric efficiency. To successfully integrate these cycles into CST plants, the industry may need to transition away from liquid working fluids (e.g., synthetic oils and molten salts) to solid and/or gaseous heat transfer media, which are more stable at high temperatures. To address this challenge, this study investigates a novel rotating receiver–storage unit that could enable high-temperature CST plants. A validated numerical model is presented for the charging and discharging processes of the proposed design. It was found that with cast steel as the storage medium in the proposed design, it is possible to achieve >70% receiver efficiency for operation temperatures of 850–1000 K. The overall plant model shows this design is best for relatively small CST systems as modularized units of 10 m diameter (reaching an energy density around 80 kWh/m3), which can be used to drive a 5 MWe sCO2 CST plant. These findings suggest that such a design would have up to 9 h of storage and could be effectively employed as an efficient peaking plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Super austenitic stainless steels are expected to replace expensive alloys in harsh environments due to their superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, the ultra-high alloy contents drive serious segregation in cast steels, where the σ phase is difficult to eliminate. In this study, the microstructural evolution of 7Mo super austenitic stainless steels under different homogenization methods was investigated. The results showed that after isothermal treatment for 30 h at 1250 °C, the σ phase in steels dissolved, while the remelting morphologies appeared at the phase boundaries. Therefore, the stepped solution heat treatment was further conducted to optimize the homogenized microstructure. The samples were heated up to 1220 °C, 1235 °C and 1250 °C with a slow heating rate, and held at these temperatures for 2 h, respectively. The elemental segregation was greatly reduced without incipient remelting and the σ phase was eventually reduced to less than 0.6%. A prolonged incubation below the dissolution temperature will lead to a spontaneous compositional adjustment of the eutectic σ phase, resulting in uphill diffusion of Cr and Mn, and reducing the homogenization efficiency of ISHT, which is avoided by SSHT. The hardness reduced from 228~236 Hv to 220~232 Hv by adopting the cooling process of "furnace cooling + water quench". In addition, the study noticed that increasing the Ce content or decreasing the Mn content can both refine the homogenized grain size and accelerate diffusion processes. This paper focuses on relationship between the mechanical properties and abrasive wear resistance, expressed by the Kb index, using an example of low-alloy cast steels. In order to achieve the aim of this work, eight cast steels of varying chemical composition were designed, cast and then heat treated. The heat treatment involved quenching and tempering at 200, 400 and 600 °C. Structural changes caused by tempering are demonstrated by the different morphologies of the carbide phases in the ferritic matrix. In the first part of this paper, the present state of knowledge about the influence of structure and hardness on the tribological properties of steels is discussed. This research involved the evaluation of a material's structure, as well as its tribological and mechanical properties. Microstructural observations were performed using a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Next, tribological tests were carried-out with the use of a dry sand/rubber wheel tester. To determine the mechanical properties, Brinell hardness measurements and a static tensile test were carried out. The relationship between the determined mechanical properties and abrasive wear resistance was then investigated. The analyses also provided information regarding the heat treatment states of the analyzed material in the as-cast and as-quenched states. It was found that the abrasive wear resistance, expressed by the index Kb, was most strongly correlated with hardness and yield point. A digital-twin-model-based optimal control system is presented for the steel continuous casting process. The system is designed for the coordinated optimization and dynamic control of secondary cooling and final electromagnetic stirring (FEMS), and involves three related parts. Firstly, a three dimensional real-time heat transfer model is established as the digital twin of the heat transfer process of continuous casting; for high accuracy, it is calibrated offline and calibrated online using measurements of the surface temperatures and shell thicknesses (only offline). Secondly, according to metallurgical rules, cooling and stirring are optimized coordinatively, based on the established digital-twin model and chaos particle swarm optimization algorithm. Thirdly, cooling and stirring are further dynamically controlled for quality stability. Finally, the system is applied in a bloom caster with model errors ≤ ±10 °C and control errors ≤ ±4 °C, which reduces the macro-segregation over grade 1.5 from 11% to 3.3%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-aluminium steels contain a significant amount of aluminium. The reaction between Al in the liquid steel and SiO2 in lime-silica-based mould powders during the continuous casting process of high Al steel causes chemical compositional changes in the mould powders, subsequently affecting the surface quality of slabs. In order to solve the aforementioned problem, lime-alumina-based mould powders have been developed, which can lead to an increase in the surface quality of cast slabs by inhibiting steel/slag interaction. However, the mould slag tends to crystallise easily, which leads to a deterioration of the mould lubrication. In view of this aspect, it is important to develop and optimize lime-alumina-based mould powders to meet the requirements of continuous casting of high-aluminium steels. In this study, the changes in crystallinity, viscosity and melting temperature of lime-alumina-based mould powders with the effects of increasing the CaO/Al2O3 ratio have been observed through STA (Simultaneous Thermal Analysis), HSM (Hot Stage Microscopy), XRD (X-ray Diffraction), IPT (Inclined Plate Test) and rotational viscometer. The crystallisation behaviour of these mould powders was evaluated by generating CCT (continuous cooling transformation) diagrams. Additionally, the changes in steel chemistry have also been analysed using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) and ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer). The results of these analyses demonstrated that crystallinity of lime-alumina-based mould powder is increased while the initial crystallisation temperature and viscosity are decreased by CaO/Al2O3 additions. The stress ratio dependency is also investigated. Moreover, a numerical methodology is introduced, which facilitates the energy-based fatigue assessment of complex spatial imperfections on the basis of radiographs. Validation of the established framework utilizing experimental results of defect-afflicted large–scale specimens leads to sound accordance of numerically and experimentally derived fatigue strength values, showing an average deviation of about only eight percent. In this study, a newly developed high-strength cast Fe81Cr15V3C1 (wt%) steel with a high resistance against dry abrasion and chloride-induced pitting corrosion is presented. The alloy was synthesized through a special casting process that yielded high solidification rates. The resulting fine, multiphase microstructure is composed of martensite, retained austenite and a network of complex carbides. This led to a very high compressive strength (>3800 MPa) and tensile strength (>1200 MPa) in the as-cast state. Furthermore, a significantly higher abrasive wear resistance in comparison to the conventional X90CrMoV18 tool steel was determined for the novel alloy under very harsh wear conditions (SiC, α-Al2O3). Regarding the tooling application, corrosion tests were conducted in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Potentiodynamic polarization curves demonstrated a similar behavior during the long-term testing of Fe81Cr15V3C1 and the X90CrMoV18 reference tool steel, though both steels revealed a different nature of corrosion degradation. The novel steel is less susceptible to local degradation, especially pitting, due to the formation of several phases that led to the development of a less dangerous form of destruction: galvanic corrosion. In conclusion, this novel cast steel offers a cost- and resource-efficient alternative to conventionally wrought cold-work steels, which are usually required for high-performance tools under highly abrasive as well as corrosive conditions. Cast austenitic chromium-nickel steel is commonly used for the manufacture of machine parts and components, which are exposed to the attack of corrosive media and abrasive wear during operation. The most commonly used grades include GX2CrNi18-9 and X10CrNi18-8 as well as GX2CrNiMo17-12-2 and X6CrNiMoNb17-12-2. To improve the abrasion resistance of cast chromium-nickel steel, primary niobium carbides were produced in the metallurgical process by increasing the carbon content and adding Fe-Nb. The microstructure of the obtained test castings consisted of an austenitic matrix and primary niobium carbides evenly distributed in this matrix. The measured hardness of the samples after heat treatment ranged from 215 to 240 HV and was higher by about 60 units than the hardness of the reference cast GX10CrNi18-9 steel, which had a hardness of about 180 HV. Compared to the reference cast steel, the abrasive wear resistance of the tested cast chromium-nickel steel (measured in Miller test) with contents of 4.4 and 5.4 wt% Nb increased only slightly, i.e., by 5% for the lower niobium content and 11% for the higher niobium content. Compared to ordinary cast GX10CrNi18-9 steel, the addition of 9.2 wt% Nb reduced the abrasive wear by almost 2.5 times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cavitation erosion degrades the surface of engineering components when the material is exposed to turbulent fluid flows. Under conditions of local pressure fluctuations, a nucleation of gas or vapor bubbles occurs. If the pressure suddenly drops below the vapor pressure, these bubbles collapse violently when subjected to higher pressure. This collapse is accompanied by the sudden flow of the liquid, which is manifested by stress pulses capable of causing plastic deformations on solid surfaces. Repeating these stress conditions can cause material removal and ultimately failure of the component itself. The present study aims to reduce the negative impact of this phenomenon on the mechanical systems components, using the TIG local surface remelting technique. Cavitation erosion tests were performed in accordance with the ASTM G32-2016 standard on samples taken from a cast high-alloy stainless steel. The alloy response for each melting current value was investigated by measuring mass loss as a function of cavitation attack time and by analyzing the damaged surfaces using optical and scanning electron microscopes. It was highlighted that the TIG remelted layers provide an increase in cavitation erosion resistance of 5–6 times as a consequence of the fine graining and microstructure induced by the technique applied. With the increasing demand for special steel, the quality of steel has become critical during the continuous casting tundish process. In recent years, tundish heating technology has played a key role in low superheat casting. Toward this, researchers have reported on the metallurgical effects of induction heating tundish (IHT). From 1984 to date, the channel-type IHT has been investigated in the production of continuous casting of special steel. In this article, the principle of this channel-type IHT technology and equipment composition were illustrated. A brief summary and comments were undertaken on the channel-type IHT, including physical modeling and numerical modeling. The application development trend of tundish induction heating equipment is summarized combined with industrial application data, which provide a reference for a better understanding of the induction heating process of tundish. A laser vibrometer system in combination with appropriate artificial intelligence methods for clustering of the measured vibration spectra was tested at a continuous steel casting machine to receive information on the solidification status of the strand. Measurements with the laser vibrometer at a fixed strand position of the billet caster of ESF under conditions of incrementally increasing casting speeds revealed a transition in the population of the identified vibration clusters as a footprint of the passed crater end position with a change from a fully solidified strand to a strand with some liquid core at the measurement position. This was in accordance with the results from a three-dimensional dynamic temperature and solidification model which was set up based on a state-of-the-art approach for solution of the heat flow equation with tailored submodels for the different boundary zones of the ESF billet caster (i.e., mould, secondary spray water zones and radiation zones) and installed at the steel plant for online monitoring and control of the casting process. The application of the newly installed measurement and model-based information systems at ESF revealed significant improvements in their billet casting process in terms of halved strand breakout rates and correspondingly increased productivity. Unreinforced masonry (URM) is one of the most popular construction materials around the world, but vulnerable during earthquakes. Due to its brittle nature, the URM structures may lead to a possible collapse of the wall of a building during earthquake events causing casualties. In the current research, an attempt is made to enhance the seismic capacity of URM structures by proposing a new innovative composite material that can improve the shear strength and deformation capacity of the URM wall systems. The results revealed that the fiber-reinforced plastic having high tensile and shear stiffness can significantly increase in-plane as well as out-of-plane bending strength of the URM wall. It was recorded that the bending moment of the prism increased up to 549.5% by increasing the bending moment from 490 N*mm to 3183 N*mm per mm deflection of prism upon using glass fibers. Moreover, the ductility ratio amplified up to 5.73 times while the stiffness ratio increased up to 4.16 times with the aid of glass fibers. Since the material used in this research work is low cost, easily available, and no need for any skilled labor, which is economically good. The article presents the results of research on the properties of molding sands in Alphaset technology (alkaline-phenolic). These sands are often used in steel foundries, producing large castings. However, knowledge about them, and especially about the changeability of their properties with the change of environmental conditions (seasons), is still insufficient. Various compositions of molding sand were analyzed based on fresh chromite sand and reclaimed sand. A binder and hardener in various mass ratios were used to prepare the mass. The research methodology included, among others, tests of tensile and bending strength, permeability, abrasion, gas emissivity, and ignition losses. These tests were carried out for summer and winter conditions. The results showed the optimal proportions of resin and hardener, showed the influence of ambient temperature on the properties of the molding sand, and the possible ratio of reclaimed sand in relation to fresh sand. The Material Genome Initiative has been driven by high-throughput calculations, experiments, characterizations, and machine learning, which has accelerated the efficiency of the discovery of novel materials. However, the precise quantification of the material microstructure features and the construction of microstructure–property models are still challenging in optimizing the performance of materials. In this study, we proposed a new model based on machine learning to enhance the power of the data augmentation of the micrographs and construct a microstructure–property linkage for cast austenitic steels. The developed model consists of two modules: the data augmentation module and microstructure–property linkage module. The data augmentation module used a multi-layer convolution neural network architecture with diverse size filter to extract the microstructure features from irregular micrographs and generate new augmented microstructure images. The microstructure–property linkage module used a modified VGG model to establish the relationship between the microstructure and material property. Taking cast austenitic stainless steels after solution treating in different temperatures as an example, the results showed that the prediction accuracy of the developed machine learning model had been improved. In this study the kinetic curves of cavitation wear of cast steels 20 GL and 30 L used for production of critical elements of hydraulic machines were obtained. The typical predominance of growth rate of cavitation mark diameter over its depth was found on the surfaces of the investigated cast steels. The revealed phenomenon made it possible to offer a formula for estimating the volume removal of the examined cast steels in order to expand the scope of the method according to ASTM G134-17. This method uses profilometry and microscopy and allows to determine cavitation resistance both for homogeneous and heterogeneous materials, including materials after modification of their surface (with different types of coatings and hardenings). The work is focused on the combined process of obtaining bimetallic parts that involve laser-directed energy deposition (LDED) additive technology and the conventional casting process. In this research, molybdenum powder was deposited by LDED on a cast 25L steel substrate. The choice of materials is motivated by demands for replacing the traditional technique of brazing molybdenum with a copper interlayer on low-carbon steel to eliminate shortcomings. The influence of powder particle morphology on the quality of deposited layers was studied. Spherical molybdenum powder PMS-M99.9 facilitated stable deposition of good layers and was found to be suitable for the LDED. Quality diagnostics were performed by studying microstructure, hardness, and wear resistance properties. Preferential parameters of the LDED of molybdenum were found through parametrical analysis. Microstructural studies showed that LDED of PMS-M99.9 powder results in a homogeneous stable layer with a strong bond to the steel substrate, which was confirmed by mutual diffusion of Mo and Fe in the boundary. It is also demonstrated that the found working parameters of LDED assure high hardness, wear, and fretting wear resistance. The three studied coatings (LDED of powders PMS-M99.9 and PM-M; VM1 brazing) had the same friction coefficient value of ~0.25. Changes in the microstructure and selected mechanical properties of two-phase ferritic-austenitic cast steel containing 24% Cr-5% Ni-2.5% Mo-2.5% Cu after isothermal holding at 750 °C and 900 °C are presented. The choice of the two temperatures of isothermal holding was dictated by the precipitation of brittle phases within a range of 600 °C–950 °C, while the holding time depended on the casting cooling time in the mould. Changes in the microstructure were studied by the SEM-EDS and XRD techniques. As a result of the decomposition of the eutectoid ferrite, a σ phase that was rich in Cr, Mo, and Ni and a secondary γ2 austenite with Widmannstätten morphology were formed. Compared to the austenite, the chemical composition of the secondary γ2 austenite showed depletion of Cr and Mo. In the ferrite, the presence of Cr2N nitrides was also detected. After a holding time of 3 h at 900 °C, these phases increased the hardness of the tested cast steel to approximately 275 HV10. At the same time, the UTS value was recorded to decrease with the increasing temperature based on the tensile test results. At 750 °C, the value of UTS was 250 MPa for 1 h of holding and 345 MPa for 3 h of holding. These values decreased after increasing the temperature to 900 °C and amounted to 139 for 1 h holding and 127 MPa for 3 h holding. It was also found that the elongation values at 750 °C ranged from 7–10%, while they amounted to 35–37% at 900 °C. A fracture analysis of the tested cast steel showed that in the prevailing part, the fractures were made of ductile nature with an arrangement of dimples that is typical for this type of fracture. Mold breakout is one of the significant problems in a continuous casting machine (caster). It represents one of the key areas within the steel production facilities of a steel plant. A breakout event on a caster will always cause safety hazards, high repair costs, loss of production, and shutdown of the caster for a short while. In this paper, a logic-judgment-based mold breakout prediction system has been developed for a continuous casting machine. This system developed new algorithms to detect the different sticker behaviors. With more algorithms running, each algorithm is more specialized in the other behaviors of stickers. This new logic-based breakout prediction system (BOPS) not only detects sticker breakouts but also detects breakouts that takes place due to variations in casting speed, mold level fluctuation, and taper/mold problems. This system also finds the exact location of the breakout in the mold and reduces the number of false alarms. The task of the system is to recognize a sticker and prevent a breakout. Moreover, the breakout prediction system uses an online thermal map of the mold for process visualization and assisting breakout prediction. This is done by alerting the operating staff or automatically reducing the cast speed according to the location of alarmed thermocouples, the type of steel, the tundish temperature, and the size of the cold slab width. By applying the proposed model in an actual steel plant, field application results show that it could timely detect all 13 breakouts with a detection ratio of 100%, and the frequency of false alarms was less than 0.056% times/heat. It has the additional advantage of not needing a lot of learning data, as most neural networks do. Thus, this new logical BOPS system should not only detect the sticker breakouts but also detect breakouts taking place due to variations in casting speed and mold level fluctuation. Tests were carried out on two high-Mn steels: 27Mn-4Si-2Al-Nb with Nb microaddition and 24Mn-3Si-1.5Al-Nb-Ti with Nb and Ti microadditions. High-manganese austenitic steels, due to their good strength and plastic properties belong to the AHSS (Advanced High-Strength Steel) group and are used in the automotive industry. The main difficulties faced during the casting of the steel and hot working are hot cracks, which can appear in the surface of the ingot. Cracks on the edges of the sheet after hot rolling are the reason for cutting the edges of the sheet and increasing production costs and material losses. The main reason for the formation of hot cracks is the decrease in metal ductility in the high-temperature brittleness range (HTBR). The width of the HTBR depends on mechanical properties and microstructural factors, i.e., non-metallic inclusions or intermetallic phases at austenite grain boundaries. In this paper, a hot tensile test was performed. The research was performed on the GLEEBLE 3800 thermomechanical simulator. This test allows us to determine the width of the high-temperature brittleness range (HTBR), the Nil Strength Temperature (NST), the Nil Ductility Temperature (NDT), and the Ductility Recovery Temperature (DRT). Hot ductility was determined from the value of the reduction in area R(A). The obtained results make it possible to determine the temperature of the beginning of hot working from the tested high-Mn steels. Fractographic research enabled us to define mechanisms of hot cracking. It was found that hot cracks form as a result of disruptions in the liquid film on crystals' boundaries. The effect of the hot top height on the formation of positive and negative macrosegregation patterns, the ingot quality, and the material yield during solidification of a 12 MT cast ingot made of a Cr-Mo-low alloy steel was investigated. A 3D numerical simulation of the process was conducted using finite element modeling. A full-size 12 MT ingot was cut off from its center in the longitudinal direction, and a large cross-section was sliced into small samples. The chemical mapping of all the elements in the steel composition was obtained for all samples and compared with the model predictions for validation purposes. The influence of the increase in hot top height on the liquid metal velocity field, size and shape of vortexes, cooling rate of the liquid, and liquidus temperature was determined. Results revealed that increasing the hot top height by 165 mm increased the solidification time, fluid velocity in regions including the hot top and ingot bottom, and decreased the local liquidus temperature. The combination of all the above resulted in an overall decrease in positive and negative macrosegregation of more than 6% and an increase in ingot quality. The results are interpreted based on the interactions between the transport of solute and heat coupled with the flow driven by thermo-solutal convection and shrinkage-induced flow. Cast steel is commonly used to produce structural and safety parts. Foundry processes allow producing parts from scrap steel directly to the required dimensions without any forming operation. Cast components may, however, exhibit macro- and micro-shrinkage porosities. The combined effect of macro- and micro-shrinkages on the fatigue behavior of cast steel has been characterized in the literature. Macro-shrinkages may nowadays be eliminated by adequate positioning of risers. However, micro-shrinkages will always be present in cast steel components. Present work addresses the influence of micro-shrinkage porosity on a G20Mn5 cast steel. G20Mn5 (normalized) ingots have been cast under industrial conditions, but ensuring the absence of macro-porosities. Solidification leads to two very different microstructures prior to the normalization treatment: columnar dendrites beneath the surface (Skin) and equiaxed microstructures close to the center (Core). First, metallographic observations of the whole ingot revealed the same grain size in both areas. Fatigue samples were extracted, by differentiating two sampling volumes corresponding to columnar (S) and equiaxed solidification (C), respectively. The distribution of micro-porosities was determined on all samples by Micro-CT-scans. Core samples exhibit micro-porosities with volumes 1.7 larger than Skin samples. Low cycle fatigue tests (3 levels of fixed plastic strain) were run on both sample series (C, S). Results follow a Manson–Coffin law. Core specimens exhibit lower fatigue life than Skin specimens. A large-eddy simulation (LES) based meshless model is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) problem of continuous casting (CC) of steel billet. The local collocation meshless method based on radial basis functions (RBF) is applied in 3D. The method applies scaled multiquadric (MQ) RBF with a shape parameter on seven nodded local sub-domains. The incompressible turbulent fluid flow is described using mass, energy, and momentum conservation equations and the LES turbulence model. The solidification system is solved with the mixture continuum model. The Boussinesq approximation for buoyancy and the Darcy approximation for porous media are used. Chorin's fractional step method is used to couple velocity and pressure. The microscopic model is closed with the lever rule model. The LES model is compared to the two-equation Low Re k − ε turbulence Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) model in terms of temperature, velocity and computational times. The LES model resolves transient character of vortices which RANS-type turbulence models are unable to tackle. The computational cost of LES models is considerably higher than in RANS. On the other hand, it results in a much lower computational cost than the direct numerical simulation (DNS). The paper demonstrates the ability of the method to solve realistic industrial 3D examples. Reduction of area (RA) measurement in a hot ductility test is widely used to define the susceptibility of surface crack of cast steel, but the test is complex because it entails processes such as specimen fabrication, heat treatment, tensile testing, and analysis. As an alternative, this study proposes a model that can predict RA. The model exploits the relationship between precipitation and RA behavior, which has a major effect on hot ductility degradation in high-Mn steels. Hot ductility tests were performed using four grades of high-Mn steels that had different V-Mo compositions, and the RA behavior was compared with the precipitation behavior obtained from a time-temperature-precipitation (TTP) graph. The ductility deterioration of high-Mn steels shows a tendency to start at the nose temperature TN at which precipitation is most severe. Using this relationship, we developed a model to predict the hot ductility degradation temperature of high-Mn steels. TN was calculated using J-matpro software (version 12) for 1500 compositions of high-Mn steels containing the precipitating elements V, Mo, Nb, and Ti, and by applying this to a deep neural network (DNN), then using the result to develop a model that can predict TN for various compositions of high-Mn steel. The model was tested by comparing its predicted RA degradation temperature with RAs extracted from reference data for five high-Mn steels. In all five steels, the temperature at which the RA decreases coincided with the value predicted by the DNN model.
