Simple Summary: Use of cancer biomarkers for tumor aggressiveness is an unmet clinical need. Differentiation of high-risk versus low-risk tumors may guide physicians to select appropriate treatment strategies tailored to the risk level of individual patients. This study aimed to evaluate the value of an optical redox imaging technique for differentiating a human melanoma mouse xenograft model with a high risk of metastasis from a low-risk mouse model. Several imaging indices were found to be significantly different between the two models. The high-risk model was found to be in a more oxidized status and to have a higher intratumor redox heterogeneity. These findings may inform further research development of the optical redox imaging approach into translatable cancer biomarkers in the future. To develop imaging biomarkers for tumors aggressiveness, our previous optical redox imaging (ORI) studies of the reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and oxidized flavoproteins (Fp, containing flavin adenine dinucleotide, i.e., FAD) in tumor xenografts of human melanoma associated the high optical redox ratio (ORR = Fp/(Fp + NADH)) and its heterogeneity to the high invasive/metastatic potential, without having reported quantitative results for NADH and Fp. Here, we implemented a calibration procedure to facilitate imaging the nominal concentrations of tissue NADH and Fp in the mouse xenografts of two human melanoma lines, an indolent less metastatic A375P and a more metastatic C8161. Images of the redox indices (NADH, Fp, ORR) revealed the existence of more oxidized areas (OAs) and more reduced areas (RAs) within individual tumors. ORR was found to be higher and NADH lower in C8161 compared to that of A375P xenografts, both globally for the whole tumors and locally in OAs. The ORR in the OA can differentiate xenografts with a higher statistical significance than the global averaged ORR. H&E staining of the tumors indicated that the redox differences we identified were more likely due to intrinsically different cell metabolism, rather than variations in cell density. During the launch and path to its final orbit, the Landsat 9 satellite performed a once in a mission lifetime maneuver as it passed beneath Landsat 8, resulting in near coincident data collection. This maneuver provided ground validation teams from across the globe the opportunity of collecting surface in situ data to compare directly to Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 data. Ground validation teams identified surface targets that would yield reflectance and/or thermal values that could be used in Landsat Level 2 product validation and set out to collect at these locations using surface validation methodologies the teams developed. The values were collected from each team and compared directly with each other across each of the different bands of both Landsat 8 and 9. The results proved consistency across the Landsat 8 and 9 platforms and also agreed well in surface reflectance underestimation of the Coastal Aerosol, Blue, and SWIR2 bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-cost ambient sensors have been identified as a promising technology for monitoring air pollution at a high spatio-temporal resolution. However, the pollutant data captured by these cost-effective sensors are less accurate than their conventional counterparts and require careful calibration to improve their accuracy and reliability. In this paper, we propose to leverage temporal information, such as the duration of time a sensor has been deployed and the time of day the reading was taken, in order to improve the calibration of low-cost sensors. This information is readily available and has so far not been utilized in the reported literature for the calibration of cost-effective ambient gas pollutant sensors. We make use of three data sets collected by research groups around the world, who gathered the data from field-deployed low-cost CO and NO2 sensors co-located with accurate reference sensors. Our investigation shows that using the temporal information as a co-variate can significantly improve the accuracy of common machine learning-based calibration techniques, such as Random Forest and Long Short-Term Memory. In this paper, a six-degree-of-freedom analog tactile probe with a new, simple, and robust mechanical design is presented. Its design is based on the use of one elastomeric ring that supports the stylus carrier and allows its movement inside a cubic measuring range of ±3 mm. The position of the probe tip is determined by three low-cost, noncontact, 2D PSD (position-sensitive detector) sensors, facilitating a wider application of this probe to different measuring systems compared to commercial ones. However, several software corrections, regarding the size and orientation of the three LED light beams, must be carried out when using these 2D sensors for this application due to the lack of additional focusing or collimating lenses and the very wide measuring range. The development process, simulation results, correction models, experimental tests, and calibration of this probe are presented. The results demonstrate high repeatability along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes (2.0 µm, 2.0 µm, and 2.1 µm, respectively) and overall accuracies of 6.7 µm, 7.0 µm, and 8.0 µm, respectively, which could be minimized by more complex correction models. The precision requirements for aeroengine blade machining are exceedingly stringent. This study aims to improve the accuracy of existing aeroengine blade measurement methods while achieving comprehensive measurement. Therefore, this study proposes a new concentric ring calibration method and designs a multi-layer concentric ring calibration plate. The effectiveness of this calibration method was verified through actual testing of standard ball gauges. Compared with the checkerboard-grid calibration method, the average deviation of the multilayer concentric ring calibration method for measuring the center distance of the standard sphere is 0.02352, which improves the measurement accuracy by 3–4 times. On the basis of multi-layer concentric ring calibration, this study builds a fringe projection profiler based on the three-frequency twelve-step phase shift method. Compared with the CMM, the average deviation of the blade chord length measured by this solution is 0.064, which meets the measurement index requirements of aeroengine fan blades. Most finite element model updating (FEMU) studies on bridges are acceleration-based due to their lower cost and ease of use compared to strain- or displacement-based methods, which entail costly experiments and traffic disruptions. This leads to a scarcity of comprehensive studies incorporating strain measurements. This study employed the strain- and acceleration-based FEMU analyses performed on a more than 50-year-old multi-span concrete highway viaduct. Mid-span strains under heavy vehicles were considered for the strain-based FEMU, and frequencies and mode shapes for the acceleration-based FEMU. The analyses were performed separately for up to three variables, representing Young's modulus adjustment factors for different groups of structural elements. FEMU studies considered residual minimisation and the error-domain model falsification (EDMF) methodology. The residual minimisation utilised four different single-objective optimisations focusing on strains, frequencies, and mode shapes. Strain- and frequency-based FEMU analyses resulted in an approximately 20% increase in the overall superstructure's design stiffness. This study shows the benefits of the intuitive EDMF over residual minimisation for FEMU, where information gained from the strain data, in addition to the acceleration data, manifests more sensible updated variables. Standard beams are mainly used for the calibration of strain sensors using their load reconstruction models. However, as an ill-posed inverse problem, the solution to these models often fails to converge, especially when dealing with dynamic loads of different frequencies. To overcome this problem, a piecewise Tikhonov regularization method (PTR) is proposed to reconstruct dynamic loads. The transfer function matrix is built both using the denoised excitations and the corresponding responses. After singular value decomposition (SVD), the singular values are divided into submatrices of different sizes by utilizing a piecewise function. The regularization parameters are solved by optimizing the piecewise submatrices. The experimental result shows that the MREs of the PTR method are 6.20% at 70 Hz and 5.86% at 80 Hz. The traditional Tikhonov regularization method based on GCV exhibits MREs of 28.44% and 29.61% at frequencies of 70 Hz and 80 Hz, respectively, whereas the L-curve-based approach demonstrates MREs of 29.98% and 18.42% at the same frequencies. Furthermore, the PREs of the PTR method are 3.54% at 70 Hz and 3.73% at 80 Hz. The traditional Tikhonov regularization method based on GCV exhibits PREs of 27.01% and 26.88% at frequencies of 70 Hz and 80 Hz, respectively, whereas the L-curve-based approach demonstrates PREs of 29.50% and 15.56% at the same frequencies. Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager (L9-OLI) was launched on 27 September 2021, after completing a successful radiometric pre-launch calibration and characterization phase. The radiometric math model that governs the ground system—the data processing and analysis system (DPAS)—uses various calibration parameters that had been derived based on the pre-launch tests and analysis. During the on-orbit commissioning phase, the OLI system acquired specific sets of data collects, which enabled the revalidation of the pre-launch absolute calibration scale and other associated instrument performance characteristics. The analysis results shown in this paper focus on the activities and results related to the transfer-to-orbit analysis for the SI-traceable pre-launch radiometric scale. Key topics discussed in this paper include: radiance and reflectance calibration parameters for OLI; solar diffuser collects; stimulation-lamp collects; dark response; signal-to-noise ratios; and noise characteristics; radiometric response stability and the on-orbit update to the radiance to reflectance conversion factors. It will be shown that the OLI response during the early on-orbit operation matched pre-launch results and therefore this re-validates the absolute radiometric scaling at the predicted pre-launch level within the expected level of uncertainties. The launch did not cause any significant changes to the OLI system from the perspective of the absolute radiometric calibration performance. Once the transfer to orbit of the absolute calibration was confirmed, it created a solid basis for further on-orbit refinements of the radiance calibration parameters. As such, follow-on calibration refinements are discussed in other articles within this special issue, and they address issues such as uniformity as well as cross-calibration activities. The satellite Earth observation (EO) sector is burgeoning with hundreds of commercial satellites being launched each year, delivering a rich source of data that could be exploited for societal benefit. Data streams from the growing number of commercial satellites are of variable quality, limiting the potential for their combined use in science applications that need long time-series data from multiple sources. The quality of calibration performed on optical sensors onboard many satellite systems is highly variable due to calibration methods, sensor design, mission objective, budget, or other operational constraints. A small number of currently operating well-characterised satellite systems with onboard calibration, such as Landsat-8/9 and Sentinel-2, and planned future missions, like the NASA Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) Pathfinder, the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Traceable Radiometry Underpinning Terrestrial and Helio Studies (TRUTHS), and LIBRA from China, are considered benchmarks for optical data quality due to their traceability to international measurement standards. This paper describes the concept of a space-based transfer calibration radiometer called the Satellite Cross-Calibration Radiometer (SCR) that would enable the calibration parameters from satellites such as Landsat-8/9, Sentinel-2, or other benchmark systems to be transferred to a range of commercial optical EO satellite systems while in orbit. A description of the key characteristics of the SCR to successfully operate in orbit and transfer calibration from reference systems to client systems is presented. A system like the SCR in orbit could complement SI-Traceable satellites (SITSats) to improve data quality and consistency and facilitate the interoperable use of data from multiple optical sensor systems for delivering higher returns on the global investment in EO. The research in this paper is related to the accuracy of the tilt compensation function of the GNSS/IMU receivers, which were examined in an open sky environment. The purpose of the paper is to point out to geodesists the conditions and limitations of using GNSS/IMU technology in precise measurements to not jeopardize the coordinate's accuracy. The environment in which the measurement is made affects the quality of the GNSS signal and can limit the visibility of the satellite, leading to larger errors in the measurement. In this experiment, the current performance of the GNSS/IMU receivers was checked. Seven GNSS/IMU receivers were used for the realization of the experiment. For six receivers the compensation angle was α = 30°, while for one receiver, the compensation angle was α = 45°. The standard uncertainty of GNSS coordinates of the antenna phase center has values less than 9 mm. The standard uncertainty of the IMU component has values less than 31 mm. The measurement uncertainty of the position of the used GNSS receivers is in the range of 18.1 mm to 31.7 mm. The limit values for the differences along the coordinate axes x and y were determined, and their values are from 26 mm to 44 mm. In the conducted experiment, it was confirmed that three GNSS/IMU receivers have a "Satisfactory" result. The results show that GNSS/IMU measurements with a slope greater than 30° significantly affect the accuracy and reliability of GNSS/IMU technology. A slope greater than 45° has a deviation along the coordinate axes of 121.3 mm. The conducted research is particularly important for geodetic works that require high positioning performance. The testing method of the GNSS/IMU receiver presented in this paper can help its users to make correct conclusions regarding the coordinate accuracy of the measured point of interest. Energy efficiency is an important issue in industry, especially with the ever-increasing consumption of electrical energy. The power quality and the traceability of metering devices are essential when integrating energy metering systems for energy efficiency. This management requires an understanding of electrical current events such as pulse and transient currents. Current transducers are widely used to measure these electrical current events up to a few megahertz. Their use makes it possible to measure not only the main current flowing through the transducer, but also the bypass current that affects electrical equipment. Calibration of these sensors up to a few megahertz then becomes an essential step. Currently, most calibration methods are limited to 100 kHz frequency for a current of 10 A. This paper presents an improvement of a traceable calibration methodology for current transducers up to 10 A and 1 MHz, thus increasing, by 10 times, the current level for such high frequency applications. This calibration methodology is based on a metrological traceability chain (uninterrupted link to the International System of Units) with respect to a calculable current shunt and is currently the only traceable method for calibrating current transducers at 10 A and up to 1 MHz. Currently, 3D reconstruction methods in structured light are generally implemented in a pre-calibrated area. To realize a full-field reconstruction, the calibration plate can be moved to multiple positions in a time-consuming manner, or the whole field can be calibrated with the help of a large calibration plate, which is more costly. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing a method for obtaining a global phase-angle model under a locally calibrated region, and based on this relationship, we investigate and analyze the reconstruction inside and outside of the calibrated zone. The results show that the method can reconstruct the object outside of the calibration zone completely, and can keep the planarity error around 0.1 mm and the sphericity error below 0.06 mm. The method only requires local calibration of the projected fringes at the two calibration positions to realize the 3D reconstruction of the full-field, which makes the method more advantageous. Among the common applications of plenoptic cameras are depth reconstruction and post-shot refocusing. These require a calibration relating the camera-side light field to that of the scene. Numerous methods with this goal have been developed based on thin lens models for the plenoptic camera's main lens and microlenses. Our work addresses the often-overlooked role of the main lens exit pupil in these models, specifically in the decoding process of standard plenoptic camera (SPC) images. We formally deduce the connection between the refocusing distance and the resampling parameter for the decoded light field and provide an analysis of the errors that arise when the exit pupil is not considered. In addition, previous work is revisited with respect to the exit pupil's role, and all theoretical results are validated through a ray tracing-based simulation. With the public release of the evaluated SPC designs alongside our simulation and experimental data, we aim to contribute to a more accurate and nuanced understanding of plenoptic camera optics. This paper investigates the manufacturing uncertainties at a 60 GHz millimeter-wave band for the monolithic hybrid microwave integrated circuits (MHMIC) fabrication process. It specifically deals with the implementation tolerances of thin-film gold microstrip transmission lines, titanium oxide thin-layer resistors, microstrip quarter-wavelength radial stubs, and active device implementation using the gold-bonding ribbons. The impacts of these manufacturing tolerances are assessed and experimentally quantified through prototyped MHMIC circuits. This allows us, on one hand, to identify the acceptable amount of dimensional variation enabling reasonable performances. On the other hand, it aims to establish a relationship between the manufacturing tolerances and the circuit parameters to provide more flexibility for the tolerance compensation and accuracy enhancement of the MHMIC fabrication processes. A 16-bit 125 MS/s pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) implemented in a 0.18 μ m CMOS process is presented in this paper. A sample-and-hold amplifier-less (SHA-less) modified 2.5-bit front-end is adopted, which splits the sampling capacitor in half to eliminate the common-mode voltage buffer. The multiplying-digital-to-analog converter (MDAC) in the first pipeline stage is modified by reusing the sampling capacitor in a foreground digital calibration for improving the ADC linearity. This design can circumvent a dedicated reference buffer to generate the calibration voltages at all comparator thresholds. By calibrating the ADC in the digital domain, the integral non-linearity (INL) is improved from −9.2/10 LSB to −3/2.2 LSB, and the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is optimized by over 8dB. Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) is a promising algorithm for indoor positioning. However, the accuracy of PDR degrades due to the accumulated error, especially in multi-floor buildings. This paper introduces a three-dimensional (3D) positioning method based on terrain feature matching to reduce the influence of accumulated errors in multi-floor scenes. The proposed calibration method involves two steps: motion pattern recognition and position matching-based calibration. The motion pattern recognition aims to detect different motion patterns, i.e., taking the stairs or horizontal walking, from the streaming data. Then, stair entrances and corridor corners are matched with transition points of motion patterns and pedestrian turning points, respectively. After matching, calibration is performed to eliminate the accumulated errors. By carrying out experiments on a two-floor closed-loop path with a walking distance about 145 m, it is shown that this method can effectively reduce the accumulated error of PDR, achieving accurate 3D positioning. Fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites have been largely used to strengthen existing concrete and masonry structures in the last decade. To design FRCM-strengthened members, the provisions of the Italian CNR-DT 215 (2018) or the American ACI 549.4R and 6R (2020) guidelines can be adopted. According to the former, the FRCM effective strain, i.e., the composite strain associated with the loss of composite action, can be obtained by combining the results of direct shear tests on FRCM–substrate joints and of tensile tests on the bare reinforcing textile. According to the latter, the effective strain can be obtained by testing FRCM coupons in tension, using the so-called clevis-grip test set-up. However, the complex bond behavior of the FRCM cannot be fully captured by considering only the effective strain. Thus, a cohesive approach has been used to describe the stress transfer between the composite and the substrate and cohesive material laws (CMLs) with different shapes have been proposed. The determination of the CML associated with a specific FRCM–substrate joint is fundamental to capture the behavior of the FRCM-strengthened member and should be determined based on the results of experimental bond tests. In this paper, a procedure previously proposed by the authors to calibrate the CML from the load response obtained by direct shear tests of FRCM–substrate joints is applied to different FRCM composites. Namely, carbon, AR glass, and PBO FRCMs are considered. The results obtained prove that the procedure allows to estimate the CML and to associate the idealized load response of a specific type of FRCM to the corresponding CML. The estimated CML can be used to determine the onset of debonding in FRCM–substrate joints, the crack number and spacing in FRCM coupons, and the locations where debonding occurs in FRCM-strengthened members. The GaoFen6 (GF-6) satellite, equipped with a wide full-swath (WFV) sensor, offers high spatial resolution and extensive coverage, making it widely utilized in agricultural and forestry classification, land resource monitoring, and other fields. Accurate on-orbit radiometric calibration of GF-6/WFV is crucial for these quantitative applications. Currently, the absolute radiometric calibration of GF-6/WFV relies primarily on vicarious calibration conducted by the China Center for Resources Satellite Data and Application (CRESDA). However, annual vicarious calibration may not adequately capture the radiometric performance of GF-6/WFV due to performance degradation. Therefore, increasing the frequency of on-orbit radiometric calibration throughout the lifetime of GF-6/WFV is essential. This study proposes a method for conducting long-term cross-radiometric calibrations of GF-6/WFV by taking the multispectral imager (MSI) onboard the Sentinel-2 satellite as a reliable reference sensor and the sites from RadCalNet as reference ground targets. Firstly, we conducted 62 on-orbit cross-radiometric calibrations of GF-6/WFV since its launch by tracking with the Sentinel-2/MSI sensor after correcting the discrepancy spectrum and solar zenith angle. Then, validation of cross-radiometric calibration results against RadCalNet products indicated an average absolute relative error between 3.55% and 4.64%. Cross-validation with additional reference sensors, including Landsat-8/OLI and MODIS, confirmed the reliability of calibration, demonstrating relative differences from GF-6/WFV of less than 5%. Furthermore, the overall uncertainty of the cross-radiometric calibration was estimated to be from 4.08% to 4.89%. Finally, trend analysis of the time-series radiometric performance was also conducted and revealed an annual degradation rate ranging from 0.57% to 2.31%. This degradation affects surface reflectance retrieval, introducing a bias of approximately 0.0073 to 0.0084. Our findings highlight the operational effectiveness of the proposed method in achieving long-time-series on-orbit radiometric calibration and degradation monitoring of GF-6/WFV. The study also demonstrates that the radiometric performance of GF-6/WFV is relatively stable and suitable for further quantitative applications, especially for long-term monitoring applications. The task of colour restoration on datasets acquired in deep waters with simple equipment such as a camera with strobes is not an easy task. This is due to the lack of a lot of information, such as the water environmental conditions, the geometric setup of the strobes and the camera, and in general, the lack of precisely calibrated setups. It is for these reasons that this study proposes a self-adaptive colour calibration method for underwater (UW) images captured in deep waters with a simple camera and strobe setup. The proposed methodology utilises the scene's 3D geometry in the form of Structure from Motion and MultiView Stereo (SfM-MVS)-generated depth maps, the well-lit areas of certain images, and a Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) to predict and restore the actual colours of the scene in a UW image dataset. This study investigates the long-term stability of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) moderate-resolution Thermal Emissive Bands (M TEBs; M12–M16) covering a period from February 2012 to August 2020. It also assesses inter-sensor consistency of the VIIRS M TEBs among three satellites (S-NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21) over eight months spanning from 18 March to 30 November 2023. The field of interest is limited to the ocean surface between 60°S and 60°N, specifically under clear-sky conditions. Taking radiative transfer modeling (RTM) as the transfer reference, we employed the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) to simulate VIIRS TEB brightness temperature (BTs), incorporating European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis data as inputs. Our results reveal two key findings. Firstly, the reprocessed S-NPP VIIRS TEBs exhibit a robust long-term stability, as demonstrated through analyses of the observation minus background BT differences (O-B ∆BTs) between VIIRS measurements (O) and CRTM simulations (B). The drifts of the O-B BT differences are consistently less than 0.102 K/Decade across all S-NPP VIIRS M TEB bands. Notably, observations from VIIRS M14 and M16 stand out with drifts well within 0.04 K/Decade, reinforcing their exceptional reliability for climate change studies. Secondly, excellent inter-sensor consistency among these three VIIRS instruments is confirmed through the double-difference analysis method (O-O). This method relies on the O-B BT differences obtained from daily VIIRS operational data. The mean inter-VIIRS O-O BT differences remain within 0.08 K for all M TEBs, except for M13. Even in the case of M13, the O-O BT differences between NOAA-21 and NOAA-20/S-NPP have values of 0.312 K and 0.234 K, respectively, which are comparable to the 0.2 K difference observed in overlapping TEBs between VIIRS and MODIS. These disparities are primarily attributed to the significant differences in the Spectral Response Function (SRF) of NOAA-21 compared to NOAA-20 and S-NPP. It is also found that the remnant scene temperature dependence of NOAA-21 versus NOAA-20/S-NPP M13 O-O BT difference after accounting for SRF difference is ~0.0033 K/K, an order of magnitude smaller than the corresponding rates in the direct BT comparisons between NOAA-21 and NOAA-20/S-NPP. Our study confirms the versatility and effectiveness of the RTM-based TEB quality evaluation method in assessing long-term sensor stability and inter-sensor consistency. The double-difference approach effectively mitigates uncertainties and biases inherent to CRTM simulations, establishing a robust mechanism for assessing inter-sensor consistency. Moreover, for M12 operating as a shortwave infrared channel, it is found that the daytime O-B BT differences of S-NPP M12 exhibit greater seasonal variability compared to the nighttime data, which can be attributed to the idea that M12 radiance is affected by the reflected solar radiation during the daytime. Furthermore, in this study, we've also characterized the spatial distributions of inter-VIIRS BT differences, identifying variations among VIIRS M TEBs, as well as spatial discrepancies between the daytime and nighttime data. A force plate is mainly used in biomechanics; it aims to measure the ground reaction force in a person's walking or standing position. In this study, a large-area force mat of the piezoresistance sensing type was developed, and a deep-learning-based weight measurement calibration method was applied to solve the problem in which measurements are not normalized because of physical limitations in hardware and signal processing. The test set was composed of the values measured at each point by weight and the value of the center of the pressure variable, and the measured value was predicted using a deep neural network (DNN) regression model. The calibration verification results show that the average weight errors range from a minimum of 0.06% to a maximum of 3.334%. The verification of the correctness, adaptability, and robustness of software systems in modern precision measurement instruments is of great significance. Due to the difficulty in processing and calibrating high-precision fine-pitch gear artefacts, the function verification and accuracy calibration of vision measurement instruments for the fine-pitch gear have become a challenge. The calibration method of the gear vision measurement system based on the virtual gear artefact involves two steps, namely obtaining and applying the virtual artefact. The obtained virtual gear artefact has the same geometric features, error features, and image edge features as the real artefact. The calibration method based on the virtual artefact can complete the correctness verification of the gear vision measurement system, and is superior to the traditional methods in adaptability verification, robustness verification, and fault analysis. In a test, the characteristic error of the virtual gear artefact could be reproduced with the original shape in the evaluation results of the computer vision gear measurement (CVGM) system, while the reproduction error did not exceed 1.9 μm. This can meet the requirements of the verification of the gear vision measurement software. In this work, the performance of the TEROS 12 electromagnetic sensor, which measures volumetric soil water content (θ), bulk soil electrical conductivity (σb), and temperature, is examined for a number of different soils, different θ and different levels of the electrical conductivity of the soil solution (ECW) under laboratory conditions. For the above reason, a prototype device was developed including a low-cost microcontroller and suitable adaptation circuits for the aforementioned sensor. Six characteristic porous media were examined in a θ range from air drying to saturation, while four different solutions of increasing Electrical Conductivity (ECw) from 0.28 dS/m to approximately 10 dS/m were used in four of these porous media. It was found that TEROS 12 apparent dielectric permittivity (εa) readings were lower than that of Topp's permittivity–water content relationship, especially at higher soil water content values in the coarse porous bodies. The differences are observed in sand (S), sandy loam (SL) and loam (L), at this order. The results suggested that the relationship between experimentally measured soil water content (θm) and εa0.5 was strongly linear (0.869 < R2 < 0.989), but the linearity of the relation θm-εa0.5 decreases with the increase in bulk EC (σb) of the soil. The most accurate results were provided by the multipoint calibration method (CAL), as evaluated with the root mean square error (RMSE). Also, it was found that εa degrades substantially at values of σb less than 2.5 dS/m while εa returns to near 80 at higher values. This work addresses the challenge of calibrating multiple solid-state LIDAR systems. The study focuses on three different solid-state LIDAR sensors that implement different hardware designs, leading to distinct scanning patterns for each system. Consequently, detecting corresponding points between the point clouds generated by these LIDAR systems—as required for calibration—is a complex task. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a method that involves several steps. First, the measurement data are preprocessed to enhance its quality. Next, features are extracted from the acquired point clouds using the Fast Point Feature Histogram method, which categorizes important characteristics of the data. Finally, the extrinsic parameters are computed using the Fast Global Registration technique. The best set of parameters for the pipeline and the calibration success are evaluated using the normalized root mean square error. In a static real-world indoor scenario, a minimum root mean square error of 7 c m was achieved. Importantly, the paper demonstrates that the presented approach is suitable for online use, indicating its potential for real-time applications. Frontal and axial knee motion can affect the accuracy of the knee extension/flexion motion measurement using a wearable goniometer. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that calibrating the goniometer on an individual's body would reduce errors in knee flexion angle during gait, compared to bench calibration. Ten young adults (23.2 ± 1.3 years) were enrolled. Knee flexion angles during gait were simultaneously assessed using a wearable goniometer sensor and an optical three-dimensional motion analysis system, and the absolute error (AE) between the two methods was calculated. The mean AE across a gait cycle was 2.4° (0.5°) for the on-body calibration, and the AE was acceptable (<5°) throughout a gait cycle (range: 1.5–3.8°). The mean AE for the on-bench calibration was 4.9° (3.4°) (range: 1.9–13.6°). Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis revealed that the AE of the on-body calibration was significantly smaller than that of the on-bench calibration during 67–82% of the gait cycle. The results indicated that the on-body calibration of a goniometer sensor had acceptable and better validity compared to the on-bench calibration, especially for the swing phase of gait. To improve the measuring accuracy of circular encoders in special applications, self-calibration of the circular encoder is necessary. The commonly used self-calibration method, namely the Equal Division Average (EDA) method, requires a large number of reading heads and cannot be used when the structural space is limited. In this paper, a self-calibration method for a circular encoder based on two reading heads with adjustable positions (TRAP) is proposed. This TRAP method uses two reading heads to simulate multiple reading heads, which can be used to achieve self-calibration of circular encoders in limited space. This paper investigates the principle of simulating multiple reading heads with two reading heads, designs and builds an experimental system, and obtains and analyzes experimental data. The experimental results show that the peak-valley value of the angle measurement error is reduced from 252.41″ to 18.82″ after self-calibration with the TRAP method, and the repeatability of multiple self-calibration experimental results is less than 0.75″. The TRAP method breaks through the limitation of the number of reading heads that can be installed during the self-calibration of the circular encoder and can effectively suppress the angle measurement error of the circular encoder. Finite element modeling for designing and optimizing lightweight titanium aerospace components requires advanced simulation tools with adequate material modeling. In this sense, a hybrid strategy is proposed in this work to identify the parameters of the Johnson–Cook plasticity and damage laws using a combined direct-inverse method. A direct calibration method for plasticity law is applied based on the literature-reported data of strain-stress curves from experimental tensile tests at different temperatures and strain rates. The triaxiliaty-dependent fracture parameters of the Johnson–Cook damage law at reference conditions of strain rate and temperature (d1, d2, and d3) are calibrated with the direct method based on new data of experimental evolution of computed average fracture strain with the average stress triaxiality. The validation is performed with numerical results from an accurate micromechanics-based Ti64 model. The inverse calibration method is used to determine the strain rate and temperature-dependent damage parameters (d4 and d5) through large strain simulations of uniaxial tensile tests. The numerical results, including average strain and necking profile at fracture, are then utilized to calculate stress triaxiality by the Bridgman criterion for adjusting parameters d4 and d5. The calibrated model yields a 2.1% error for plasticity and 3.4% for fracture predictions. The experimental and simulated load-bearing capacity using the micromechanics damage model differed by only 1%. This demonstrates that the SC11–TNT model of Ti64 is reliable for identifying the Johnson–Cook damage law through the accurate use of inverse methods. The hybrid calibration strategy demonstrates the potential capability of the identified Johnson–Cook model to accurately predict the design load-carrying capacity of Ti64 aerospace components under different deformation rates and temperatures while accounting for material damage effects. The paper investigates the mechanism of seawater intrusion and the performance of free and open-source codes for the simulation of variable density flow problems in coastal aquifers. For this purpose, the research focused on the Marathon Watershed, located in the northeastern tip of Attica, Greece. For the simulation of the groundwater system, MODFLOW, MT3DMS and SEAWAT codes were implemented, while sensitivity analysis and calibration processes were carried out with UCODE. Hydraulic head calibration was performed on the MODFLOW model, and TDS concentration was validated in the SEAWAT model. The calibrated parameters of the MODFLOW model were obtained for the variable density flow simulation with SEAWAT. The MODFLOW and SEAWAT hydraulic head outputs were analyzed and compared to one another. The outcome of this analysis is that SEAWAT produced slightly better results in terms of the hydraulic heads, concluding that parameter transferability can take place between the two models. For the purpose of the seawater intrusion assessment, the use of the SEAWAT code revealed that the aquifer is subjected to passive and passive–active seawater intrusion during wet and dry seasons, respectively. Mangosteens can develop a postharvest physiological disorder, called "hardening", which affects their marketability and is not detectable using visual inspection. The hardening disorder of mangosteens was determined by firmness value using the texture analyzer. Near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) in the region of 935–1720 nm was tested as a possible rapid and non-destructive method to detect this disorder. The spectra from a region of interest of mangosteens were acquired and used for analysis. Calibration models for firmness of a similarly sized group and a mixed-size group were established using partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector machine regression (SVMR). Chemometric algorithms were investigated in order to determine the optimal conditions for establishing the models for firmness. The optimum model was obtained when the fruit were graded into similarly sized groups. Using partial least squares regression (PLSR), the correlation coefficient of prediction (Rp) was 0.87 and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) was 6.25 N. The predictive images for firmness of the fruit were created by interpreting predicted firmness visualized as colors in every pixel. Micro-parameter calibration is essential in constructing an accurate and reliable numerical model of particle discrete element PFC3D 6.0 software. Micro-parameter calibration is mainly accomplished according to the macro-parameters obtained from static or quasi-static laboratory tests such as UCS. However, there is little current research concerning the calibration method under impact load. An SJM micro-parameter calibration method, based on the SHPB rock test and the FLAC3D/PFC3D coupling method, is proposed to solve this problem. Firstly, UCS, SHPB, and other laboratory rock tests were carried out to determine the rock sample's macroscopic physical and mechanical parameters. Secondly, the FLAC3D/PFC3D numerical coupling model of the SHPB test was established, and the single-factor and double-factor orthogonal numerical simulation was carried out. Then, the main micro-parameters that affect the macroscopic physical and mechanical parameters of the SJM particle discrete element model were proposed. Finally, the quantitative relationship between the model's macro-parameters and micro-parameters was established through multiple linear regression. A set of PFC3D micro-parameter calibration processes under impact load was established. The relative errors of the macro-parameters obtained from laboratory and numerical tests totaled less than 5%, which further verifies the rationality of the calibration method. This study was aimed at enhancing pothole detection by combining sigmoid calibration function and entropy thresholding segmentation on UAV multispectral imagery. UAV imagery was acquired via the flying of the DJI Matrice 600 (M600) UAV system, with the MicaSense RedEdge imaging sensor mounted on its fixed wing. An endmember spectral pixel denoting pothole feature was selected and used as the base from which spectral radiance patterns of a pothole were analyzed. A field survey was carried out to measure pothole diameters, which were used as the base on which the pothole area was determined. Entropy thresholding segmentation was employed to classify potholes. The sigmoid calibration function was used to reconfigure spectral radiance properties of the UAV spectral bands to pothole features. The descriptive statistics was computed to determine radiance threshold values to be used in demarcating potholes from the reconfigured or calibrated spectral bands. The performance of the sigmoid calibration function was evaluated by analyzing the area under curve (AUC) results generated using the Relative Operating Characteristic (ROC) technique. Spectral radiance pattern analysis of the pothole surface revealed high radiance values in the red channel and low radiance values in the near-infrared (NIR) channels of the spectrum. The sigmoid calibration function radiometrically reconfigured UAV spectral bands based on a total of 500 sampled pixels of pothole surface obtained from all the spectral channels. Upon successful calibration of UAV radiometric properties to pothole surface, the reconfigured mean radiance values for pothole surface were noted to be 0.868, 0.886, 0.944, 0.211 and 0.863 for blue, green, red, NIR and red edge, respectively. The area under curve (AUC) results revealed the r2 values of 0.53, 0.35, 0.71, 0.19 and 0.35 for blue, green, red, NIR and red edge spectral channels, respectively. Overestimation of pothole 1 by both original and calibrated spectral channels was noted and can be attributed to the presence of soils adjacent to the pothole. However, calibrated red channel estimated pothole 2 and pothole 3 accurately, with a slight area deviation from the measured potholes. Hydrological modeling is essential for runoff simulations in line with climate studies, especially in remote areas with data scarcity. Advancements in climatic precipitation datasets have improved the accuracy of hydrological modeling. This research aims to evaluate the APHRODITE, PERSIANN-CDR, and ERA5-Land climatic precipitation datasets for the Hablehroud watershed in Iran. The datasets were compared with interpolated ground station precipitation data using the inverse distance weighted (IDW) method. The variable infiltration capacity (VIC) model was utilized to simulate runoff from 1992 to 1996. The results revealed that the APHRODITE and PERSIANN-CDR datasets demonstrated the highest and lowest accuracy, respectively. The sensitivity of the model was analyzed using each precipitation dataset, and model calibration was performed using the Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE). The evaluation of daily runoff simulation based on observed precipitation indicated a KGE value of 0.78 and 0.76 during the calibration and validation periods, respectively. The KGE values at the daily time scale were 0.64 and 0.77 for PERSIANN-CDR data, 0.62 and 0.75 for APHRODITE precipitation data, 0.50 and 0.66 for ERA5-Land precipitation data during the calibration and validation periods, respectively. These results indicate that despite varying sensitivity, climatic precipitation datasets present satisfactory performance, particularly in poorly gauged basins with infrequent historical datasets. An innovative mobile lidar device, developed to monitor volcanic plumes during explosive eruptions at Mt. Etna (Italy) and to analyse the optical properties of volcanic particles, was upgraded in October 2023 with the aim of improving volcanic plume retrievals. The new configuration of the lidar allows it to obtain new data on both the optical and the microphysical properties of the atmospheric aerosol. In fact, after the upgrade, the lidar is able to measure three backscattering coefficients, two extinction coefficients and two depolarisation ratios in a configuration defined as "state-of-the-art lidar", where properties such as particle size distribution and the refractive index can be derived. During the lidar implementation, we were able to test the system's performance through specific calibration measurements. A comparison in an aerosol-free region (7.2–12 km) between lidar signals at 1064 nm, 532 nm and 355 nm and the corresponding pure molecular profiles showed a relative difference of <1% between them for all the wavelengths, highlighting the good dynamic of the signals. The overlap correction allowed us to reduce the underestimation of the backscattering coefficient from 50% to 10% below 450 m and 750 m at both 355 and 532 nm, respectively. The correct alignment between the laser beam and the receiver optical chain was tested using the signal received from the different quadrants of the telescope, and the relative differences between the four directions were comparable to zero, within the margin of error. Finally, the first measurement results are shown and compared with results obtained by other instruments, with the aim of proving the ability of the upgraded system to more precisely characterise aerosol optical and microphysical properties. In order to accomplish the calibration and validation (Cal/Val) of altimeters, the Wanshan calibration site (WSCS) has been used as a calibration site for satellite altimeters since its completion in August 2019. In this paper, we introduced the WSCS and the dedicated equipment including permanent GNSS reference stations (PGSs), acoustic tide gauges (ATGs), and dedicated GNSS buoys (DGB), etc. placed on Zhi'wan, Wai'ling'ding, Dan'gan, and Miao'Wan islands of the WSCS. The PGSs data of Zhi'wan and Wai'ling'ding islands were processed and analyzed using the GAMIT/GLOBK (Version 10.7) and Hector (Version 1.9) software to define the datum for Cal/Val of altimeters in WSCS. The DGB was used to transfer the datum from the PGSs to the ATGs of Zhi'wan, Wai'ling'ding, and Dan'gan islands. Separately, the tidal and mean sea surface (MSS) corrections are needed in the Cal/Val of altimeters. We evaluated the global/regional tide models of FES2014, HAMTIDE12, DTU16, NAO99jb, GOT4.10, and EOT20 using the three in situ tide gauge data of WSCS and Hong Kong tide gauge data (No. B329) derived from the Global Sea Level Observing System. The HAMTIDE12 tide model was chosen to be the most accurate one to maintain the tidal difference between the locations of the ATGs and the altimeter footprints. To establish the sea surface connections between the ATGs and the altimeter footprints, a GPS towing body and a highly accurate ship-based SSH measurement system (HASMS) were used to measure the sea surface of this area in 2018 and 2022, respectively. The global/regional mean sea surface (MSS) models of DTU 2021, EGM 2008 (mean dynamic topography minus by CLS_MDT_2018), and CLS2015 were accurately evaluated using the in situ measured data and HY-2A altimeter, and the CLS2015 MSS model was used for Cal/Val of altimeters in WSCS. The data collected by the equipment of WSCS, related auxiliary models mentioned above, and the sea level data of the hydrological station placed on Dan'gan island were used to accomplish the Cal/Val of HY-2B, HY-2C, Jason-3, and Sentinel-3A (S3A) altimeters. The bias of HY-2B (Pass No. 375) was −16.7 ± 45.2 mm, with a drift of 0.5 mm/year. The HY-2C biases were −18.9 ± 48.0 mm with drifts of 0.0 mm/year and −5.6 ± 49.3 mm with −0.3 mm/year drifts for Pass No. 170 and 185, respectively. The Jason-3 bias was −4.1 ± 78.7 mm for Pass No. 153 and −25.8 ± 85.5 mm for Pass No. 012 after it has changed its orbits since April 2022, respectively. The biases of S3A were determined to be −16.5 ± 46.3 mm with a drift of −0.6 mm/year and −9.8 ± 30.1 mm with a drift of 0.5 mm/year for Pass No. 260 and 309, respectively. The calibration results show that the WSCS can commercialize the satellite altimeter calibration. We also discussed the calibration potential for a wide swath satellite altimeter of WSCS. The Landsat-9 satellite, launched in September 2021, carries the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) as one of its payloads. This instrument is a clone of the Landsat-8 OLI and its mission is to continue the operational land imaging of the Landsat program. The OLI-2 instrument is not significantly different from OLI though the instrument-level pre-launch spectral characterization process was much improved. The focal plane modules used on OLI-2 were manufactured as spares for OLI and much of the spectral characterization of the components was performed for OLI. However, while the spectral response of the fully assembled OLI was characterized by a double monochromator system, the OLI-2 spectral characterization made use of the Goddard Laser for Absolute Measurement of Radiance (GLAMR). GLAMR is a system of tunable lasers that cover 350–2500 nm which are fiber-coupled to a 30 in integrating sphere permanently monitored by NIST-traceable radiometers. GLAMR allowed the spectral characterization of every detector of the OLI-2 focal plane in nominal imaging conditions. The spectral performance of the OLI-2 was, in general, much better than requirements. The final relative spectral responses (RSRs) represent the best characterization any Landsat instrument spectral response. The L band frequency shows high sensitivity to sea surface salinity. More stable brightness temperature (TB) measurements are required for L-band radiometers to reduce salinity retrieval errors than for high-frequency radiometers. Due to the complexity of L-band synthetic aperture radiometers, a carefully selected cold-sky target should be viewed using an L-band synthetic aperture radiometer for the purpose of absolute TB calibration since the celestial sky is relatively well characterized and stable in the L band. A novel, effective cold-sky calibration strategy is presented in this paper. The strategy of cold-sky calibration of the synthetic aperture radiometer is applied when and where the antenna main lobe points to the 'flat' celestial sky, and the impact of each type of foreign source, such as the sun or moon, on visibility values should be minimized in the meantime. Additionally, antenna thermal stability is also considered, which can cause antenna deformation, and the antenna patterns are affected. A high-precision and high-fidelity simulator is built for the cold-sky calibration optimized strategy. The orbital beta angle is introduced to characterize the variation in space environment temperatures. A planet that is considered spherical in shape requires significantly less computation than an ellipsoid one in the simulator. The trade-off study results for the planet shape assumption in the cold-sky calibration simulator are presented. Finally, the calibration uncertainty and performance are assessed. For chemical measurements, calibration is typically conducted by regression analysis. In many cases, generalized approaches are required to account for a complex-structured variance–covariance matrix of (in)dependent variables. However, in the particular case of highly correlated independent variables, the ordinary least squares (OLS) method can play a rational role with an approximated propagation of uncertainties of the correlated independent variables into that of a calibrated value for a particular case in which standard deviation of fit residuals are close to the uncertainties along the ordinate of calibration data. This proposed method aids in bypassing an iterative solver for the minimization of the implicit form of the squared residuals. This further allows us to derive the explicit expression of budgeted uncertainties corresponding to a regression uncertainty, the measurement uncertainty of the calibration target, and correlated independent variables. Explicit analytical expressions for the calibrated value and associated uncertainties are given for straight-line and second-order polynomial fit models for the highly correlated independent variables. Crushable foam plasticity models are employed to simulate material response under essentially monotonic loading. For the plastic part of the behavior, the default crushable foam model in Abaqus/Explicit is the volumetric hardening model, where the yield surface evolves by the volumetric compacting plastic strain, and the other available model is the isotropic hardening model, where the yield curve is centrally located at the origin in the pressure—the Mises stress plane. In this study, the characteristic of two models was examined by applying them to a simple 18650 lithium-ion cylindrical cell. The computation cell model consists of the shell casing and the homogenized jelly roll which represents the electrode assembly. Both crushable foam models were calibrated to represent the homogenized mechanical properties of the jellyroll, and the load–displacement relations were compared with the experimental results. Laser trackers are instruments used to measure the three-dimensional coordinates of objects with high precision. It is necessary to study calibration methods to identify geometric errors of laser trackers so as to compensate for errors and improve measurement accuracy. Among the offsets, tilts, and eccentricity errors in the system, the transit tilt and offset errors play important roles and have an essential effect on the measurement accuracy, which need to be calibrated and compensated for. Current methods for detecting geometric errors between the transit and standing axes are complex and time-consuming. In this paper, a fast and novel calibration method is proposed, which can be easily operated with high precision. Two test rods are coaxially mounted on the ends of the transit axis to extend the hidden transit axis. Then, a telecentric measurement system is used to record the projection images of the test rods and identify the position of the transit axis. The transit offset and tilt errors were thus obtained by comparing the central axis positions of the two test rods before and after the standing axis rotated 180 degrees. Moreover, a numerical analysis method was proposed based on the least square circle fitting method to calibrate the installation eccentricity errors of the test rods. Experimental results verify that the measurement accuracy of the laser tracker can be improved after error compensation using the calibrated transit offset and tilt errors. The measurement error of the laser tracker can be reduced from 161 µm to about 73 µm after compensation at a distance of 5 m, while the error can be decreased from 143 µm to about 108 µm at a distance of 10 m. In the context of accelerating urbanisation, the issue of urban stormwater flooding security has garnered increasing attention. Further development of urban stormwater management techniques is imperative to achieve more stable, precise, and expeditious simulation outcomes. The calibration of model parameters, which is a pivotal phase in stormwater simulation endeavours, is hampered by challenges such as substantial subjectivity, time intensiveness, and low efficiency. Therefore, this study introduces a parameter calibration model coupled with the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III). This model utilises the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and peak relative error (PE) values for various rainfall events as objective functions to calibrate and assess the study target. The two rainfalls used for rate determination had NSE values greater than 0.9 and absolute PE values less than 0.17; the rainfall used for validation had NSE values greater than 0.9 and absolute PE values less than 0.27. Thus, the results of the model for the rate determination of the parameters are reliable. The high precision and low power consumption of the clock generator are critical in passive RFID transponders and passive IoT chips, but fluctuations in PVT can cause considerable degradation in the precision of the chip's internal clocks. This paper proposes a high-precision clock circuit with a single-shot calibration method to addresses this issue in a low-power clock solution. Based on the reference timespan in the preamble of the down-link RF envelope, a TDIF (Time-digital to current-frequency) calibration method was implemented with both a streamlined procedure and customized circuits. By computing the difference between the time counts and applying it to an ultra-low-power, current-starved oscillator, the current change ratio can be linearly controlled. Compared to the traditional integer frequency division scheme used by passive tags for a 160 k bits up-link data rate, the required frequency for the clock generator was reduced from 960 kHz to 320 kHz, the calibration error was reduced from ±10% to ±3% for ±25% frequency deviation, the calibration time was 133.3 μs for a single shot in this work, and the power consumption was 158 nW after the calibration was completed. This leads to an excellent power efficiency of 0.59 nW/kHz and meets the requirements of low power, low cost, and PVT robustness in the RF-powered passive IoT chips. By appropriately increasing the number of calibration digits and the duration, this calibration approach could also be used for other ultra-low-power passive IoT chips that require higher-precision clocking without the use of off-chip crystals. This paper proposes an all-digital calibration algorithm that utilizes a reference channel to suppress the timing mismatch in the Time-Interleaved Analog-to-Digital Converter (TIADC). The output of the reference channel is aligned with each sub-channel in turn, therefore enabling the simultaneous sampling and conversion of the same input signal. First, the statistical characteristics across the channels are employed for estimating the timing mismatch; then, by comparing the output difference between the reference channel and the sub-channels that are sampled simultaneously, the deviation of the derivator can be calibrated. Finally, combining both calibration results yields an accurate final output. This proposed algorithm provides an effective solution to improve TIADC performance in high-speed data acquisition systems. The proposed architecture is applied to a 12-bit 2.4 GS/s four-channel TIADC model, and then its effectiveness is verified. The simulation results exhibit that the Effective Number Of Bits (ENOB) at an input signal frequency of 984 MHz shows a remarkable improvement from 6.88 bits to 11.92 bits. The effectiveness of this technique is also demonstrated through the off-chip calibration of a commercial 12-bit four-channel 2 GS/s TIADC using a 680 MHz input signal that is based on the actual chip results. Control rod calibration experiment results for the Oregon State TRIGA® Reactor (OSTR) immediately following LEU conversion in 2008, and MCNP® 5 predicted rod worths from the 2008 LEU Conversion Safety Analysis Report (CSAR) are discussed. The reactivity worth of the four OSTR control rods is measured using the rod-pull method. Reactor power and period measurements in this method rely on the fission chamber power detector on the north side of the reflector. It is proposed that the location of the fission chamber and the neutron flux distribution in the core may result in an inaccurate reactor period measurement due to the asymmetry of the neutron flux distribution in the OSTR core. The asymmetry of the flux is believed to be more pronounced during super-criticality, resulting in errors in the time-of-power-rise measurements. As a result, control rod calibration experiments may under-predict or over-predict the reactivity worth of certain control rods. A time-independent Monte–Carlo method for the quantification of these effects is presented. Low-cost sensors (LCSs) of Geekcreit PM1/PM2.5/PM10 (based on a PMS5003 sampler) and BOHU BH-1 models A3 and B3 (based on a Pando G7 sampler) were compared for different aerosol size ranges using a research-grade instrument (Grimm 1.109) under controlled laboratory conditions. An aerosol generator was utilized to produce various sizes of monodispersed particulate matter (PM), which was introduced into a laboratory smoke chamber under resistance heating/cooling and/or varying RH conditions. In addition, the accuracy of the air temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) sensors of the LCSs were assessed against calibrated, laboratory-grade instruments. The study LCSs showed generally accurate readings for PM2.5, irrespectively of the slow T and/or RH changes, which provided apt conditions for accurate calibration slopes (S) and low intercepts/bias (b) of the linear fits. On the other hand, PM1 and PM10 readings slightly deviated from those observed with the reference monitor, likely due to the lower detection efficacy of the LCSs towards fine and coarse PM. Varying RH influenced the S and b values, showing its impact on the detection efficacy of LCSs. Under low/medium RH, homoscedastic calibration curves of PMx were found, whereas rather heteroscedastic calibration plots were observed at high RH. For T calibration, low RH in the smoke chamber provided more reproducible conditions in terms of lower measurement bias for LCSs as recorded against a calibrated, reference-grade thermometer. We propose a method for fitting transition intensities to a sufficiently large set of trajectories of a continuous-time non-homogeneous Markov chain with a finite state space. Starting with simulated data computed with Gompertz–Makeham transition intensities, we apply the proposed method to fit piecewise linear intensities and then compare the transition probabilities corresponding to both the Gompertz–Makeham transition intensities and the fitted piecewise linear intensities; the main comparison result is that the order of magnitude of the average fitting error per unit time—chosen as a year—is always less than 1%, thus validating the methodology proposed. High-precision temperature control of large-area blackbodies has a pivotal role in temperature calibration and thermal imaging correction. Meanwhile, it is necessary to correct the temperature difference between the radiating (surface of use) and back surfaces (where the temperature sensor is installed) of the blackbody during the testing phase. Moreover, large-area blackbodies are usually composed of multiple temperature control channels, and manual correction in this scenario is error-prone and inefficient. At present, there is no method that can achieve temperature-automated calibration for a large-area blackbody radiation source. Therefore, this article is dedicated to achieving temperature-automated calibration for a large-area blackbody radiation source. First, utilizing two calibrated infrared thermometers, the optimal temperature measurement location was determined using a focusing algorithm. Then, a three-axis movement system was used to obtain the true temperature at the same measurement location on a large-area blackbody surface from different channels. This temperature was subtracted from the blackbody's back surface. The temperature difference was calculated employing a weighted algorithm to derive the parameters for calibration. Finally, regarding experimental verification, the consistency error of the temperature measurement point was reduced by 85.4%, the temperature uniformity of the surface source was improved by 40.4%, and the average temperature measurement deviation decreased by 43.8%. In addition, this system demonstrated the characteristics of strong environmental adaptability that was able to perform temperature calibration under the working conditions of a blackbody surface temperature from 100 K to 573 K, which decreased the calibration time by 9.82 times. Large-scale crowd phenomena are complex to model because the behaviour of pedestrians needs to be described at both strategic, tactical, and operational levels and is impacted by the density of the crowd. Microscopic models manage to mimic the dynamics at low densities, whereas mesoscopic models achieve better performances in dense situations. This paper proposes and evaluates a novel agent-based model to enable agents to dynamically change their operational model based on local density. The ability to combine microscopic and mesoscopic models for multi-scale simulation is studied through a use case of pedestrians at the Festival of Lights, Lyon, France. Pedestrian outflow data are extracted from video recordings of exiting crowds at the festival. The hybrid model is calibrated and validated using a genetic algorithm that optimises the match between simulated and observed outflow data. Additionally, a local sensitivity analysis is then conducted to identify the most sensitive parameters in the model. Finally, the performance of the hybrid model is compared to different models in terms of density map and computation time. The results demonstrate that the hybrid model has the capacity to effectively simulate pedestrians across varied density scenarios while optimising computational performance compared to other models. Optical 3D scanning applications are increasingly used in various medical fields. Setups involving multiple adjustable systems require repeated extrinsic calibration between patients. Existing calibration solutions are either not applicable to the medical field or require a time-consuming process with multiple captures and target poses. Here, we present an application with a 3D checkerboard (3Dcb) for extrinsic calibration with a single capture. The 3Dcb application can register captures with a reference to validate measurement quality. Furthermore, it can register captures from camera pairs for point-cloud stitching of static and dynamic scenes. Registering static captures from TIDA-00254 to its reference from a Photoneo MotionCam-3D resulted in an error (root mean square error ± standard deviation) of 0.02 mm ± 2.9 mm. Registering a pair of Photoneo MotionCam-3D cameras for dynamic captures resulted in an error of 2.2 mm ± 1.4 mm. These results show that our 3Dcb implementation provides registration for static and dynamic captures that is sufficiently accurate for clinical use. The implementation is also robust and can be used with cameras with comparatively low accuracy. For the calibration of linear scales, comparators are generally used. Comparators are devices that enable the movement of an evaluation apparatus over a calibrated scale along a linear base with high precision. The construction of a comparator includes a movable carriage that carries the device for the evaluation of the position of the given edge of the line scale relative to the beginning of the scale. In principle, it involves a camera capturing the scale of the measurer, where the position of the camera's projection center is measured using an interferometer. This article addresses the development of a comparator assembled from low-cost components, as well as the description of systematic influences related to the movement of individual parts of the system, such as the inclination and rotation of the camera and directional and height deviations during the carriage's movement. This article also includes an evaluation of the edge of the given scale with subpixel accuracy, addressing distortion elimination and excluding the influences of impurities or imperfections on the scale. The proposed solution was applied to linear-scale measurers, such as leveling rods with coded and conventional scales and measuring tapes. Eddy current displacement sensors (ECDSs) are widely used for the noncontact position measurement of small displacements (lift-offs). Challenges arise with larger displacements as the sensitivity of the ECDSs decreases. This leads to a more pronounced impact of temperature variations on the inductance and, consequently, an increased position error. Design solutions often rely on multiple coils, suitable coil carrier materials, and compensation measures to address the challenges. This study presents a single-coil ECDS for large displacement ranges in environments with high temperatures and temperature variations. The analysis is based on a sensor model derived from an equivalent circuit model (ECM). We propose design measures for both the sensing coil and the target, focusing on material selection to handle the impact of temperature variations. A key part of improving performance under varying temperatures includes model-based temperature compensation for the inductance of the sensing coil. We introduce a method to calibrate the sensor for large displacements, using a modified coupling coefficient based on field simulation data. Our analysis shows that this single-coil ECDS design maintains a position error of less than 0.2% full-scale for a temperature variation of 100 K for the sensing coil and 110 K for the target.
