Chinese tallow is a non-native invasive tree expanding in range and abundance throughout the southern United States. Several biogeographical studies mapping tallow distribution and examining key underlying environmental factors relied on the U.S. Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data, representing forestlands at scales of ~2400 ha. However, given that most invasive trees, like tallow, are cosmopolitan and dynamic in nature, FIA data fails to capture the extent and severity of the invasion especially outside areas classified as forestlands. To develop tallow maps that more adequately depict its distribution at finer spatial scales and to capture observations in non-forestlands, we combined verified citizen science observations with FIA data. Further, we described spatiotemporal patterns and compared citizen science to FIA and other previously published distribution maps. From our work, although tallow is prevalent in the south, Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi were the most invaded states. Tallow was associated with flatwoods and prairie grasslands of the Gulf Coast. Annual extreme minimum temperatures of less than −12.2 °C (10 °F) represented the northern limit of naturalized tallow populations. Tallow's northward and inland expansion was captured in citizen science and FIA data, indicating a tallow spread rate ranging from 5 to 20 km annually over the last decade. Systematic sampling, such as FIA, and citizen science data both have their own unique pitfalls. However, the use of citizen science data can complement invasive plant distribution mapping, especially when combined with data from established systematic monitoring networks. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a rapid decline in renal function and can occur after ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) to the tubular epithelia. The nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway protects against AKI and AKI-to-chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, but we previously demonstrated that severe IRI maladaptively reduced NRF2 activity in mice. To understand the mechanism of this response, we subjected C57BL/6J mice to unilateral kidney IRI with ischemia times that were titrated to induce mild to severe injury. Mild IRI increased NRF2 activity and was associated with renal recovery, whereas severe IRI decreased NRF2 activity and led to progressive CKD. Due to these effects of ischemia, we tested the hypothesis that hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) mediates NRF2 activity. To mimic mild and severe ischemia, we activated HIF-1α in HK-2 cells in nutrient-replete or nutrient-deficient conditions. HIF-1α activation in nutrient-replete conditions enhanced NRF2 nuclear localization and activity. However, in nutrient-deficient conditions, HIF-1α activation suppressed NRF2 nuclear localization and activity. Nuclear localization was rescued with HIF-1α siRNA knockdown. Our results suggest that severe ischemic AKI leads to HIF-1α-mediated suppression of NRF2, leading to AKI-to-CKD progression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wildfires and pests are natural disturbance agents in many forest ecosystems that often contribute to ecological succession, nutrient cycling, and forest species composition. Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) is a coniferous species that plays an important role as an ecological barrier, and is widely spread in northern China. Its wood is loose; its branches, leaves, and cones contain a high level of resin and volatile oils that make the species highly flammable and the stands dominated by the species are very vulnerable to fire. Recently, resinosis on boles of Pinus sylvestris became an epidemic in China. To explore the potential effects of pests on fire, we compared the flammability of Mongolian pine barks with or without resinosis on boles using a cone calorimeter and several combustion analyses. We found that the barks from boles with resinosis had a greater oil content than the healthy trees. The study also indicated that the ignition times of the barks from boles with and without resinosis were 6.00 s (±1.73) and 22.67 s (±1.15), respectively, and that the heat release rate curves were parabolic, with peaks 225.19 and 75.27 kW/m2, respectively, for the two bark types. Additionally, because resinosis was on the low- to mid-bole of infested trees, the barks from boles with resinosis tended to be ignited much easier than those without resinosis. This clearly evidenced that pests could affect fire severity and behavior by increasing forest flammability. More information about the role that pests play in the different forest cover types is needed to increase our understanding of fire danger and to develop sound forest management policies. Piñon (Pinus spp. L.)–juniper (Juniperus spp. L.) woodlands' historical stand structures were recreated to provide reference conditions and document long-term changes in the Sky Islands of the Davis Mountains, Texas. Restoration of these isolated woodlands requires insights into the range of variability in current and historical stand structures, as well as an understanding of the spatiotemporal establishment and recruitment patterns of tree species. With drastic changes in forests and woodlands of the Southwestern United States widely reported, the main objective of this study was to reconstruct woodland tree temporal and spatial establishment patterns. A stratified random sampling approach was used to select two study sites each of 3600 m2 in area. Within each site, all individual trees were mapped, measured, and cored for age determination. Age and tree location data were used to recreate the spatiotemporal patterns of tree species establishment and recruitment. Increments in density of both Mexican piñon (Pinus cembroides var. cembroides Zucc.) and alligator juniper (Juniperus deppeana var. deppeana Steud.) reached 422 trees ha−1 in the 115-year period between 1890 and 2005; a yearly increment of 4 trees ha−1 that did not reflect a rapid rate of change in these piñon–juniper woodlands. Age distributions reflected the multi-cohort nature of these woodlands, and spatial autocorrelation measures were useful in the objective delineation of these cohorts. Temporal and functional niche differentiation of juniper was reflected in the development pattern where alligator juniper served as a pioneer species, exhibited a longer period of substantial recruitment, and had greater recruitment rates than that of Mexican piñon. Recruitment of Mexican piñon and alligator juniper occurred in an episodic fashion, with the majority of recruits being acquired between 1890 and 1949. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emerald ash borer (EAB) has been the most destructive and costly nonnative insect to threaten the health of ash (Fraxinus) species in North America for at least the past 25 years. The development of methods for detecting visually-hidden EAB galleries at early stages of infestation would provide a useful tool to more effectively facilitate the planning and implementation of targeted EAB pest-suppression and management activities. We tested the efficacy of using a dual-technology electronic-nose (e-nose)/gas chromatograph device as a means for detection of EAB infestations in green ash trees in different EAB-decline classes by analysis of VOC emissions in sapwood. We found significant differences in VOC profiles for trees from the four decline classes. The VOC composition, quantities, and types of volatile metabolites present in headspace volatiles varied considerably across sample types, and resulted in distinct e-nose smellprint patterns that were characteristic of each unique chemical composition. In addition, specific VOC metabolites were identified as potential healthy and EAB-infestation biomarkers, indicative of the health states of individual trees. Few significant differences in major bark phenolic compounds were found between ash decline classes using LC-MS. The e-nose was effective in discriminating between uninfested and EAB-infested trees based on sapwood VOC emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
