Non-aerated compost tea (CT) was prepared from compost derived from rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) and fish (cod, common ling, haddock, saithe) residues that fermented in water. Electrical conductivity, pH, concentrations of dry matter, ash, C, macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg), and micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Zn) of CT prepared under different fermentation conditions were measured. The effects of process factors, i.e., water/compost mass ratio (4.2–9.8 g/g) and fermentation time (4.2–9.8 days = 100–236 h), on the physicochemical properties of CT were quantified using quadratic polynomial models. CT obtained at optimal levels of process factors (4.2 g/g and 5.6 days = 134 h) was tested for lettuce seed germination and seedling growth. The present study aimed to use geopolymer materials synthesized from different fly ashes, which are promising for the adsorption of copper ions from aqueous solutions. The characterization of fly ashes and prepared adsorbents was performed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Taguchi and ANOVA methods were used to predict the effect of different working parameters on copper ion removal by prepared geopolymers. Based on data obtained by the Taguchi method, it was found that the factor most influencing the adsorption process is the type of adsorbent used, followed by the solution pH, the reaction time, the adsorbent dose, and the initial copper ion concentration. The ANOVA results agree with the Taguchi method. The optimal conditions of the adsorption process were: fly ash C modified by direct activation with 2 M NaOH, at 70 °C for 4 h, solution pH of 5, initial pollutant concentration of 300 mg/L, 40 g/L adsorbent dose, and 120 min of reaction time. A cost-effective solution to the problems that the automotive industry is facing nowadays regarding regulations on emissions and fuel efficiency is to achieve weight reduction of automobile parts. Glass fiber-reinforced polymers are regularly used to manufacture various components, and some parts may also contain thermoplastic elastomers for toughness improvement. This work aimed to investigate the effect of styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene triblock copolymer (E) and treated fly ash (C) on the morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties of long glass fiber (G)-reinforced polypropylene (PP). Results showed that the composites obtained through melt processing methods presented similar thermal stability and improved (nano)mechanical properties compared to 25–30 wt.% G-reinforced PP composites (PP-25G/PP-30G). Specifically, the impact strength and surface hardness were greatly improved. The addition of 20 wt.% E led to a 25–39% increase in impact strength and surface elasticity, while the addition of 6.5 wt.% C led to a 16% increase in surface hardness. The composite based on 25 wt.% G, 6.5 wt.% C, and 20 wt.% E presented the best-balanced properties (8–17% increase in impact strength, 38–41% increase in axial strain, and 35% increase in surface hardness) compared with PP-30G/PP-25G. Structural and morphological analysis confirmed the presence of a strong interaction between the components that make the composites. The adoption of school-based running programs has rapidly increased over the last five years in the UK and globally. However, there is currently a lack of information on how these initiatives are implemented, and whether they are generalizable and/or sustainable. This study evaluated the implementation (including reach, fidelity, and dose) of a school-based running program over seven months to inform future delivery. This observational study used a mixed-method, single-group, before-and-after design strengthened by multiple interim measurements to evaluate the implementation of an optional school-based running program. Five state-funded primary schools in Leicestershire, UK, participated, with 17 teachers and 189 (81 boys (47.4%) and 90 girls (52.6%)) Year 5 pupils (aged 9–10 years) from eight classes. During the 2016/2017 academic year, data were collected via several measures (including interviews, focus groups, observations, questionnaires, and teacher implementation logs) at multiple levels (i.e., school and individual) and at multiple time points during implementation. Follow up qualitative data were also collected during 2017/2018. The school-based running program achieved good reach, with 100% of pupils opting to participate at some point during the academic year. All schools implemented the program with good fidelity, although the level of implementation varied between schools and over time. The average number of sessions held per week ranged from 0.94–3.89 with the average distance accumulated per pupil per week ranging from 0.02 to 2.91 kilometers and boys being more likely than girls to be classed as high-level participators. Despite an initial drop off in participation over time, all schools remained engaged in the program and continued to implement it until the end of the school year. Contextual features (e.g., staff capacity and resources) differed between schools and influenced the quality of implementation and the frequency of delivery. The school-based running program is simple, inexpensive, and versatile and can be implemented by schools with relative ease. However, schools are diverse settings, with unique challenges to ongoing delivery. Thus, planned adaptations, specific to each school’s context, are likely necessary to sustain participation in the longer term and should be considered prior to implementation. To better understand the mass transfer behaviors in CaC2 production from CaO and coke, this paper studies the diffusion behaviors of CaO and graphite, with or without ash, at 1500 and 1700 °C. CaO and graphite are pressed into tablets and heated alone or in close contact. Physical and chemical changes in these tablets are analyzed by XRD and SEM+EDX. In some experiments, thin Mo wires are placed between the closely contacted CaO and graphite tablets to identify the diffusion direction. It is found that the diffusion between CaO and low-ash graphite is very limited. SiO2 in a high-ash graphite diffuses into CaO tablet and reacts with CaO to form Ca2SiO4, which then diffuses into the graphite tablet easily and leads to CaC2 formation at 1700 °C. The Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype Classification (FSPC) scale is widely used to categorize skin types but has limitations such as the underrepresentation of darker skin phototypes, low classification resolution, and subjectivity. These limitations may contribute to dermatological care disparities in patients with darker skin phototypes, including the misdiagnosis of wound healing progression and escalated dermatological disease severity. This study introduces (1) an optical sensor measuring reflected light across 410–940 nm, (2) an unsupervised K-means algorithm for skin phototype classification using broadband optical data, and (3) methods to optimize classification across the Near-ultraviolet-A, Visible, and Near-infrared spectra. The differentiation capability of the algorithm was compared to human assessment based on FSPC in a diverse participant population (n = 30) spanning an even distribution of the full FSPC scale. The FSPC assessment distinguished between light and dark skin phototypes (e.g., FSPC I vs. VI) at 560, 585, and 645 nm but struggled with more similar phototypes (e.g., I vs. II). The K-means algorithm demonstrated stronger differentiation across a broader range of wavelengths, resulting in better classification resolution and supporting its use as a quantifiable and reproducible method for skin type classification. This paper studies the computational complexity of subclasses of semiperfect rings from the perspective of computability theory. A ring is semiperfect if the identity can be expressed as a sum of mutually orthogonal local idempotents. Semisimple rings and local rings are typical subclasses of semiperfect rings that play important roles in noncommutative algebra. First, we define a ring to be semisimple if the left regular module can be decomposed as a finite direct sum of simple submodules and prove that the index set of computable semisimple rings is Σ 2 0 -hard within the index set of computable rings. Second, we define local rings by using equivalent properties of non-left invertible elements of rings and show that the index set of computable local rings is Π 2 0 -hard within the index set of computable rings. Finally, based on the Π 2 0 definition of local rings, computable semiperfect rings can be described by Σ 3 0 formulas. This study analyzes 105 coal ash samples from Jurassic and Carboniferous coals from five mines in Kazakhstan, Lenin, Saradyr, Bogatyr, Maikuben, and Shubarkol, focusing on the inorganic elemental compositions, their occurrence, and industrial and environmental implications. Methods include coal ash yield and volatile matter analysis, mineralogical characterization via low-temperature ash X-ray diffraction (LTA-XRD), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). High-temperature ash (HTA) was analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), highlighting XRF's potential for rapid multi-elemental analysis. Nine major elements (Al, Si, P, S, Fe, K, Ca, and Ti) and eleven trace elements (As, Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, V, Ga, Mn, Ni, Y, Yb, and Zr) were identified in HTA samples through EDXRF. SEM and dendrogram analysis confirm their co-occurrence with quartz, kaolinite, pyrite, and accessory minerals such as chalcopyrite, zircon, rutile, and REE-bearing apatite. The elemental content of samples enhances industrial suitability by reducing emissions. Only Yb shows slight enrichment for economic benefits, along with La, Ce, and Nd, while concentrations of potentially toxic elements indicate minimal environmental risk. EDXRF demonstrates its efficiency for large-scale investigations, with all samples analyzed in a few days using automated overnight measurements. Unlike municipal solid waste bottom ash (MSWBA), fly ash (MSWFA) is landfilled due to its toxicity. However, MSWFA may also be a source of elements. Ash samples collected from a Portuguese MSW incinerator from different locations and over six months were analyzed. Their geochemical composition was normalized to the upper continental crust (UCC) and compared since metal enrichment may be used as an indicator for potential recovery. The potential recovery economic viability was also assessed for metals K, Sb, Cu, Pb, and Zn, considering the ore cut-off grade and minimum industrial grade (MIG) from Chinese geological and mineral industry standards. Compared to the global samples, only the Baghouse 1 FA size fraction's coarse fraction showed a slight enrichment (1- to 5-fold) in Bi, Nb, and Zr. After wet sieving, most trace elements were enriched in all fractions, but Sb, Bi, Pb, Zn, Ag, As, Cd, Sn, Se, and Hg were depleted in the coarse fractions and enriched in the fine ones. For Baghouse 1 samples collected over 6 months, the normalization to the UCC showed enrichment of Zn and Pb between 10× and 50×, Zr, Cu, In, and Se between 50× and 100×, and Ag, Mn, Cd, Sb, and Bi at more than 100×. Over six months, the Baghouse 1 FA soluble fraction ranged between 21 wt.% and 30 wt.%, and its precipitates comprised 27% CaO, 6% Na2O, and 9% K2O. Nowadays, there is increasing global demand for activated carbon considering its wide usage as an adsorbent of environmental pollutants. Biowaste rich in lignocellulose, like the cone-like flowers of black alder (A_AC), shows promise as a precursor for novel materials. Building upon previous research and this material's established applicability for removing cyanobacteria cells and cyanotoxins from water, this study investigates the CNOHS composition of A_AC and its potential to inhibit biofilm formation. A comprehensive CNOHS analysis showed the material composition as 64.5%, 1.77%, 28.83%, 2.05%, and 0.12% for C, N, O, H, and S respectively. The material's efficacy in inhibiting biofilm formation across eight selected bacterial strains was evaluated. The results showed biofilm formation rates of 62.6%, 22.1%, 73.8%, 12.1%, 40.9%, 24.2%, 9.2%, and 7.6% for Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella Typhimurium, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Enterococcus faecalis, respectively. Biofilm formation is influenced by biotic and abiotic factors, especially the physicochemical properties of the substrate. Pigmented skin lesions have increased considerably worldwide in the last years, with melanoma being responsible for 75% of deaths and low survival rates. The development and refining of more efficient non-invasive optical techniques such as diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is crucial for the diagnosis of melanoma skin cancer. The development of novel diagnostic approaches requires a sufficient number of test samples. Hence, the similarities between banana brown spots (BBSs) and human skin pigmented lesions (HSPLs) could be exploited by employing the former as an optical phantom for validating these techniques. This work analyses the potential similarity of BBSs to HSPLs of volunteers with different skin phototypes by means of several characteristics, such as symmetry, color RGB tonality, and principal component analysis (PCA) of spectra. The findings demonstrate a notable resemblance between the attributes concerning spectrum, area, and color of HSPLs and BBSs at specific ripening stages. Furthermore, the spectral similarity is increased when a fiber-optic probe with a shorter distance (240 µm) between the source fiber and the detector fiber is utilized, in comparison to a probe with a greater distance (2500 µm) for this parameter. Featured Application: Building materials for products with lower carbon footprints and increased mechanical properties. This article's aim is to analyze physical, mechanical, and fracture properties as well as the thermal investigation of geopolymer composites reinforced with flax, glass fiber, and also the hybrid combination of fibers. Two types of matrices were considered as composites matrices. The first composition was based on fly ash and river sand. The second matrix composition contained fly ash and glass spheres. The content of reinforcement was 1% by mass. Compressive strength and three-point bending fracture tests were performed. The values of fracture toughness and fracture energy were determined. The resonance method was used to verify the dynamic characteristics, such as the dynamic modulus of elasticity and the dynamic Poisson ratio. The results show that single-type fibers in composites based on fly ash and glass spheres did not affect compressive strength. However, introducing hybrid reinforcement increased compressive strength by about 10% compared to the reference specimens. Flax fibers and hybrid reinforcement ensured higher fracture toughness and energy. The results also revealed great potential for glass sphere application to geopolymer materials in terms of fracture mechanics and thermal properties. Despite the lower strength properties in relation to geopolymers based on sand aggregate, applying reinforced fibers into the composite with glass spheres enhanced the compressive strength compared to other materials. The construction industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact while meeting the growing demand for infrastructure. One approach to achieving this goal is the use of industrial waste as a replacement for traditional supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). This study investigates sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA), addressing the future scarcity and increased cost of other commonly used SCMs. Despite existing literature, the use of SCBA is hindered by several unknowns. This research evaluates SCBA's performance in mortars, focusing on the effects of curing temperature and particle size variation. Mortar samples were prepared with SCBA replacements from 0% to 30% by mass of cement and cured at 21 °C and 45 °C for 7, 28, and 90 days. The results suggest potential for SCBA replacement up to 30%, emphasizing its sustainability and economic benefits. Inversion of the photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal is a rarely reported case. This signal anomaly can have implications for PPG-based cardiovascular assessments. The conditions for PPG signal inversion in the vicinity of the dorsalis pedis (DPA) artery of the foot were investigated. Wireless multi-wavelength PPG sensing with skin-probe contact pressure and local skin temperature were studied at different sensor positions, and the occurrence of inversion (OOI) was investigated. Twelve healthy adult volunteers were studied over four LED wavelengths at three levels of contact pressure for 11 probe positions. A novel algorithm quantified the proportion of inverted samples with respect to the abovementioned variables. Our algorithm classifying inverted vs. non-inverted pulses achieved 98.3% accuracy. Ten of the participants had at least one inverted signal identified. The impact of interindividual variation on inversion prevalence was large, but different LEDs, relative position to the DPA and sensor contact pressure also affected OOI. Skin surface and room temperatures showed no impact on OOI. Lateral measurements showed 39.6% more inversion at maximum compared to minimum contact pressure. Mechanical capillary bed variations and arterial reflections during venous engorgement are considered viable explanations for our observations. The deposition of Yellow River sediment in the middle and lower reaches is a significant factor in the siltation of reservoirs and the occurrence of serious flooding along the river. The efficient and valuable utilization of Yellow River sediment has already become a key research topic in this field. In this study, we have employed Yellow River sediment as the primary material, in conjunction with commercially available slag, fly ash, and quicklime as the binder, to develop a novel type of artificial flood-prevention stone. Following a 28-day standard curing procedure, the highest compressive strength of the prepared artificial stone was recorded at 4.29 MPa, with a value exceeding 0.7 MPa under wet conditions. The results demonstrated that the prepared artificial stone met the specifications for artificial flood-prevention stones. The curing mechanism, as evidenced by analyses from SEM and XRD testing, indicated that the alkali excitation process in the binder, which produced C-A-S-H gel, was the key factor in enhancing the compressive strength of the specimens. Notably, an evaluation of the amount of CO2 emissions and the cost of the artificial stone concluded that the preparation process was both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. The potential substitution of Portland cement–based concrete with low- and high-calcium fly ash–based geopolymers was investigated. However, predicting the workability and compressive strength of geopolymers with the desired physical and mechanical properties is a complicated process because of the variety of chemical compositions found in aluminosilicate sources. Therefore, machine-learning techniques were used to predict the physical and mechanical properties of the geopolymers and eliminate the usual trial-and-error laboratory procedures. The experimental and predicted results of geopolymer properties using the multilayer perceptron regressor, voting regressor, and XGBoost techniques were compared. The XGBoost model outperformed the other models in terms of accuracy for predicting workability and compressive strength, producing the R2 of 0.96 and 0.89, respectively. Sensitivity analysis determined that the percentage of CaO had the largest effect on geopolymer workability of 27.13%. Fly ash content had the largest effect on compressive strength of 34.44%. Building envelopes with natural fibers are the future of sustainable construction, combining ecology and energy efficiency. The geopolymer building envelope was reinforced with innovative composite bars and two types of natural insulation (coconut mats and flax/hemp non-woven fabrics) were used as the core material. A 10 mol sodium hydroxide solution with an aqueous sodium silicate solution was used for the alkaline activation of the geopolymers. The purpose of this study was to confirm the feasibility of producing geopolymer composites with insulating layers made of renewable materials, which would have compressive strengths like those of C25/30-grade concrete and thermal conductivity coefficients like those of lightweight concrete. This publication presents the results of physicochemical tests on the base materials (oxide (XRF) and mineral phase (XRD) analysis as well as morphology and EDS) and studies the physical (density measurements), mechanical (flexural and compressive strength tests) and insulating properties (thermal conductivity measurements) of the finished sandwich partitions. The composites achieved a flexural strength of 7 MPa, a compressive strength of up to 30 MPa and a decrease in the thermal conductivity coefficient of about 60%. The research demonstrates contribution to sustainable construction by developing geopolymer composites, offering both structural integrity and superior thermal insulation. This innovation not only reduces reliance on traditional, carbon-intensive materials but also promotes the use of eco-friendly resources, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of construction. Tea, the world's second most traded commodity, significantly impacts the economies of producing countries. However, prolonged cultivation leads to soil degradation, particularly through acidification and the depletion of essential nutrients, which adversely affects tea quality. This study investigates the effects of biomass materials—biochar, organic fertilizer, and bio-organic fertilizer—on both tea quality and soil properties. The results revealed that all biomass treatments improved the catechin quality index (CQI) of tea, with bio-organic fertilizer (BOF) yielding the highest CQI at 629.41, followed closely by biochar (624.16) and organic fertilizer (581.34). Soil analysis indicated that biochar increased soil pH from 4.53 to 5.54, total carbon by 194.6% (from 12.61 g kg−1 to 24.42 g kg−1), and nitrogen levels by 11.7% (from 14.91 mg kg−1 to 16.17 mg kg−1), while reducing soluble salts significantly. Furthermore, biomass treatments enhanced enzyme activities, with urease and acid phosphatase increasing by up to 136.6% and 149.5%, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive relationships, with tea amino acid content correlating with soil total nitrogen (r = 0.62, p < 0.05) and tea polyphenols positively correlating with available potassium (r = 0.60, p < 0.05). This study demonstrates that integrating biomass materials into tea cultivation not only enhances tea quality but also contributes to soil health, supporting sustainable tea garden management practices. The exogenous application of oxalic acid is a potential approach to amplifying phytoremediation performance on Cd-contaminated soils. However, few studies explore the optimal oxalic acid application regime from a perspective of coupling different concentrations and timings to maximize Cd removal rate. Given this, a pot experiment was conducted using oil sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) as the test plant. Oxalic acid was added to the pots at concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 mmol/kg at 20, 30, 40, and 50 days after emergence. A control (CK) without exogenous oxalic acid was also included. We examined the discrepancies in various soil Cd forms, sunflower height, plant non-protein thiol (NPT) levels, and soil Cd remediation efficiency under different oxalic acid application regimes. The results showed that applying oxalic acid at a concentration of 4 mmol/kg reduced the proportion of Fe-Mn oxide Cd and organic Cd compared to the control (CK), while increased the proportion of available Cd. The optimal application time is 30 or 40 days after emergence. The addition of exogenous oxalic acid promoted the growth of sunflowers, with the greatest increase in plant height observed when 4 mmol/kg oxalic acid was applied at 30 days after emergence. Exogenous oxalic acid enhanced the absorption of Cd by sunflower roots, with the total Cd accumulation in roots, stems, and leaves being higher than in the control (CK). When 4 mmol/kg oxalic acid was applied at 30 days after emergence, the total Cd accumulation in roots, stems, and leaves was highest. Under different application times and concentration levels of oxalic acid, Cd accumulation was highest in roots, followed by leaves, with stems showing the lowest accumulation. The NPT content in each part is as follows: root > stem > leaf. Applying 5 mmol/kg oxalic acid after 30 days of sunflower emergence resulted in relatively higher total NPT content in roots, stems, and leaves compared to the control (CK). The TOPSIS model was used for comprehensive evaluation, which showed that 4 mmol/kg oxalic acid application at 30 days after emergence could be used as the optimal oxalic acid application regime for phytoremediation. These findings indicate that the addition of oxalic acid effectively promoted the absorption of Cd by sunflower and increased the efficiency of Cd removal from the rhizosphere soil, with the optimal removal of soil Cd achieved by applying oxalic acid at a concentration of 4 mmol/kg 30 days after the emergence of oilseed sunflower seedlings. In non-invasive blood glucose measurement, the sensitivity of glucose-induced optical signals within human tissue is a crucial reference point. This study evaluates the sensitivity of glucose-induced diffuse reflectance in the 1000–1700 nm range. A key factor in understanding this sensitivity is the rate at which the scattering coefficient changes due to glucose, as it is significantly higher than in non-living media and predominantly influences the diffuse light signal level when blood glucose levels change. The study measured and calculated the changes in the scattering coefficient at 1314 nm, a wavelength chosen for its minimal interference from glucose absorption and other bodily constituents. Based on the Mie scattering theory and the results at 1314 nm, the changes in the scattering coefficient within the 1000–1700 nm range were estimated. Subsequently, the sensitivity of the glucose signal across this range was determined through Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The findings from 25 human trials indicate that the measured sensitivities at five other typical wavelengths within this band generally align with the sensitivities calculated using the aforementioned method. Rare earth elements are an essential critical raw material in the development of modern technologies and are highly sensitive to both supply chain disruptions and market turbulence. The presented study examines the characteristics of fuel, fly ash, and bottom ash from lignite combustion in power plant units. Also, we attempted to determine the amount of amorphous glass in the ashes and whether and to what extent the glass from the ash samples is bound to REY. The suitability of the ash was assessed as an alternative source of REY. The fuel and ash samples were acquired from power plants in Poland. The tests determined the fuel quality parameters, including the chemical and phase composition, of amorphous glass using ICP-MS and XRD methods, respectively. The study showed that all ash samples dissolved in 4% HF were enriched in REY. The efficiency of REY enrichment varied, and its presence in the residue samples was found to be in similar proportions compared to the raw sample. All ash residue samples were enriched in critical elements. The obtained values of the Coutl prospective coefficient allowed for the classification of some of the analyzed ashes and their residues after dissolution in 4% HF as prospective REY raw materials. Background: The increasing popularity of laser- and light-based esthetic treatments for facial rejuvenation has raised concerns regarding ocular safety. Although these procedures are generally considered safe and effective, there is a growing body of evidence highlighting the potential for ocular complications. This review aims to systematically analyze the types and mechanisms of ocular injuries associated with such treatments, as well as to evaluate preventive measures and management strategies. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases including MEDLINE, PubMed and Ovid for relevant studies published on clinical trials, diagnosis and treatment. Some papers were further reviewed using a double-blinding approach, varying sample sizes, control usage, randomization usage and objective endpoint measurements. All studies were classified according to the Oxford Centre for evidence-based medicine evidence hierarchy. Result: Our review identified several types of ocular complications associated with facial laser or light treatments, including but not limited to conjunctival burns, corneal damage, retinal phototoxicity, and transient vision disturbances. The incidence of these complications varies significantly depending on the type of laser or light source employed, treatment parameters, and the anatomical proximity of the eyes to the treatment area. Factors such as inadequate protective measures, patient movement during the procedure, and the operator's experience were found to contribute to the risk of ocular injury. Strategies such as the use of appropriate eye protection, careful patient positioning, and thorough pre-treatment assessments were highlighted as essential preventive measures. Conclusion: Ocular complications, though rare, represent a significant risk in facial esthetic laser and light treatments. This review underscores the importance of awareness among practitioners regarding the potential ocular hazards and the implementation of robust safety protocols. Future research is needed to establish standardized guidelines to minimize risks and enhance patient safety in esthetic dermatological practices. Continued education and improved protective strategies will be essential in safeguarding ocular health as the field of esthetic treatments continues to evolve. The composition of soil organic matter is considered to have a key influence on C sequestration and global climate change and can be associated with changes in vegetation cover in the terrestrial ecosystem. Our study aimed to evaluate the soil chemical structures and various organic components from available or reactive to more stable forms in forest soils affected by acidification and after conversion from fairly close to natural beech (Fagus sylvatica) stands to a spruce (Picea abies) monoculture. Our results revealed that the beech stands had higher contents of dissolved organic carbon and low molecular mass organic acid compared to the spruce stands. The aliphatic CH groups within the soluble alkaline-extractable organic substance (AEOS) gradually disappeared with deeper soil horizons under both forest species, while the presence of aliphatic CH groups in the low-solubility AEOS was more pronounced in the A horizon under spruce and relatively increased with depth under beech stands. The carboxylic groups were more prevalent in deeper soil horizons, while polysaccharide chains and nitrogen functional groups decreased with depth under both forest stands but were more prevalent under beech than under spruce stands. These findings suggest that the stability of organic matter through the forest soil profiles increased due to the transformation of various organic compounds from litter to more stable organic matter with higher amounts of lignin components to greater amounts of carboxylic groups and aromatic groups in deeper soil horizons. Furthermore, a higher number of mobile components of soil organic matter and carboxylic acids, together with lower pH and cation exchange capacity under spruce, resulted in the leaching of nutrients, releasing risk elements into the soil solution and accelerating the podzolization process. The recycling of materials is in line with the policy of a closed-loop economy and is currently an option for managing waste in order to reuse it to create new products. To this end, 3D printing is being used to produce materials not only from pure polymers but also from their composites. Further development in this field seems interesting and necessary, and the use of recycled materials will help to reduce waste and energy consumption. This article deals with the use of degradable waste materials for the production of insulating materials by 3D printing. For the study, samples with different numbers of layers (one and five), composite thickness (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mm) and composition (including colored resins that were transparent, black, gray, and metallized, as well as resins that were colored gray using soybean oil and gray using natural fibers) were made. The role of natural fillers was played by glycerin and biomass ash with a weight ratio of 5%. The finished materials were tested, and the values of the coefficient of thermal resistance and heat transfer were determined. The best thermal properties among the tested materials were distinguished by a five-layer sample made of soybean-oil-based resin with a thickness of 100 mm. Effective waste management is a matter of global concern. The utilization of widely recognized waste materials, such as plastics, rubber, and glass, in the construction industry is being investigated for their cost efficiency, enhanced material properties, and reduced environmental impact, contributing to broader sustainability efforts. This study investigates the development of an engineered geopolymer composite with a focus on sustainability by utilizing industrial waste materials. Gamma-irradiated polyethylene terephthalate was employed as a partial replacement for silica sand, while graphene nanoplatelets were incorporated to enhance composite properties and reduce environmental waste. A statistical technique known as response surface methodology was used to optimize the effects of gamma-irradiated polyethylene terephthalate and graphene nanoplatelets on the properties of the engineered geopolymer composite. Key findings indicate that gamma-irradiated polyethylene terephthalate, with higher crystallinity and robust interfacial bonding with the geopolymer matrix, significantly enhances compressive strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, and flexural toughness. However, graphene nanoplatelets, while improving mechanical properties, reduce the ductility index. Optimal composite properties were achieved with 26.4% gamma-irradiated polyethylene terephthalate and 0.12% graphene nanoplatelets. This research underscores the potential of gamma-irradiated polyethylene terephthalate in creating high-performance, sustainable construction materials and highlights the trade-offs between mechanical reinforcement and ductility. Future research should explore the chain scission effects of gamma irradiation on polyethylene terephthalate, further optimize composite properties, and investigate mechanisms to enhance ductility, advancing the utilization of polyethylene terephthalate in sustainable construction materials. For years, the Bacillus genus has encompassed a heterogeneous group of individuals whose main common trait was their ability to sporulate in the presence of oxygen. This criterion has been revised, resulting in the reclassification of several species into new genera and to a redefinition of the characteristics of the members of this taxon. Currently, the species of the genus are grouped into the Subtilis clade and the Cereus clade. The former, called Bacillus sensu stricto, initially composed of B. subtilis, B. licheniformis, B. pumilus, and B. amyloliquefaciens, has subsequently incorporated new species related to these. The Cereus clade, Bacillus cereus sensu lato, consists of pathogenic species (B. anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis) as well as others of significance in agriculture and industry. Furthermore, identifying these individuals remains complex, requiring alternatives to 16S rRNA sequencing. The ability to form spores resistant to stressful conditions provides a significant advantage over other genera, with observable differences in sporulation rates and spore structure among different species. Additionally, Bacillus spp. are known for their capacity to produce antimicrobial substances, lytic enzymes, and volatile organic compounds, each with diverse applications. Some species are even used as probiotics. This review delves into aspects related to the taxonomy and identification of microorganisms belonging to the genus Bacillus, which often present challenges. Amaranthus retroflexus L. is a troublesome dicot weed in crop fields and has developed high resistance to nicosulfuron in China. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of specific resistance mutations (A205V, D376E, W574L, S653T, and S653N) of the acetohydroxy acid synthase enzyme (AHAS) on the resistance of A. retroflexus to nicosulfuron. The resistance mutations in A. retroflexus not only conferred 17.17- to 31.70-fold resistance to nicosulfuron but also greatly decreased AHAS sensitivity and increased AHAS binding affinity to substrate pyruvate, which mechanisms were primarily responsible for the observed A. retroflexus resistance. Molecular docking results indicated that these resistance mutations altered AHAS binding free energy with nicosulfuron. All the resistance mutations showed less sensitivity to feedback inhibition by branched-chain amino acids, but the mutations did not necessarily affect biosynthesis in A. retroflexus. Industrial solid residual waste (ISRW) generated during and/or due to the making of energy, heat, and raw materials poses a major threat to a sustainable future due to its large production quantities and complex characteristics. Especially improper disposal of ISRW (e.g., coal ashes, municipal waste residue, and biomass ashes) not only threatens human health but can also cause environmental hazards such as water, soil, and air pollution, upsetting the global balance. Given the environmental impacts as well as increasingly stringent disposal regulations, lack of landfills, and economic constraints, more sustainable and naturally friendly management strategies are being adopted for ISRW. While numerous studies in the literature have considered various characteristics of ISRW, a complete appraisal of the entire practice, from making to disposal, is still lacking. This paper presents an overview of the making, features, and traditional and innovative managing tactics of ISRW within the context of a general legal framework. This paper provides a scientific review of the various production types, global production quantities, and characteristics of ISRW. Additionally, the orthodox management strategies of ISRWs are scrutinized from a sociological and ecological standpoint, and diverse techniques for more viable and secure management are elucidated. This review culminates in an examination of the global impact and advantages of ISRW management policies based on legislation and regulations. Consequently, this paper seeks to elucidate the extant practices and a few recent advancements pertaining to ISRWs. Simple Summary: The levels of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in blood from cancer-draining veins hold diagnostic and prognostic significance across various cancers. However, the research on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains limited. This study aimed to compare CTCs based on the sampling site (peripheral vein vs. cancer-draining azygos vein) and to investigate their association with the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with ESCC. Blood samples were collected preoperatively from both veins in 40 ESCC patients at Pusan National University Hospital from June 2020 to April 2022. CTCs were detected using a centrifugal microfluidic method with fluid-assisted separation. CTCs and TWIST (+) CTCs were detected more frequently in the azygos vein blood than in the peripheral vein blood; however, the difference was not statistically significant (85.0% [34/40] vs. 77.5% [31/40], p = 0.250 and 82.5% [33/40] vs. 75.0% [30/40], p = 0.586, respectively). CTC and TWIST (+) CTC counts were significantly higher in the azygos vein blood than in the peripheral vein blood (7 vs. 3, p < 0.001, and 6 vs. 2, p < 0.001, respectively). CTCs and TWIST (+) CTCs from peripheral and azygos veins showed no association with clinicopathological characteristics. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common cause of hair loss affecting both men and women, is typically treated using pharmaceutical options, such as minoxidil and finasteride. While these medications work for many individuals, they are not suitable options for all. To date, the only non-pharmaceutical option that the United States Food and Drug Administration has cleared as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia is low-level laser therapy (LLLT). Numerous clinical trials utilizing LLLT devices of various types are available. However, a myriad of other physical treatments for this form of hair loss have been reported in the literature. This review evaluated the effectiveness of microneedling, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), fractional laser therapy, and nonablative laser therapy for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA). It also explores the potential of multimodal treatments combining these physical therapies. The majority of evidence in the literature supports LLLT as a physical therapy for androgenetic alopecia. However, other physical treatments, such as nonablative laser treatments, and multimodal approaches, such as PEMF-LLLT, seem to have the potential to be equally or more promising and merit further exploration. Weighting materials such as barite and ilmenite are crucial for controlling fluid density during deep or ultra-deep drilling operations. However, sagging poses significant challenges, especially in highly deviated high-pressure and high-temperature (HP/HT) wells. This leads to inadequate well control, wellbore instability, and variations in hydrostatic pressure in extended-reach wells. Given the challenges of experimental research, reliable prediction models are imperative for evaluating the interaction between the ratio of anti-sagging additives, temperature, and wellbore inclination on sag factor (SF). This research presents statistical-based empirical models for predicting the SF at various wellbore inclinations (0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 70°, 80°, and 90°) and assessing the influence of fly ash on the SF. The regression equations, developed using the Response Surface Methodology in Minitab 18 software, show high reliability, with R2 values approaching unity. Contour and surface response plots provide a clear understanding of the variable interactions. The analysis reveals that sagging is most severe at 60° to 65° inclination. At 400 °F and 60° inclination, adding 4 lb/bbl of fly ash reduces sagging in barite and ilmenite-densified fluid by 63.9% and 63.1%, respectively. Model validation shows high accuracy, with percentage errors below 3%. This study offers valuable insights for optimizing drilling fluid formulations in HP/HT well environments. With a common aim of restoring physiological function of defective cells, optogenetics and targeted gene therapies have shown great clinical potential and novelty in the branch of personalized medicine and inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). The basis of optogenetics aims to bypass defective photoreceptors by introducing opsins with light-sensing capabilities. In contrast, targeted gene therapies, such as methods based on CRISPR-Cas9 and RNA interference with noncoding RNAs (i.e., microRNA, small interfering RNA, short hairpin RNA), consists of inducing normal gene or protein expression into affected cells. Having partially leveraged the challenges limiting their prompt introduction into the clinical practice (i.e., engineering, cell or tissue delivery capabilities), it is crucial to deepen the fields of knowledge applied to optogenetics and targeted gene therapy. The aim of this in-depth and novel literature review is to explain the fundamentals and applications of optogenetics and targeted gene therapies, while providing decision-making arguments for ophthalmologists. First, we review the biomolecular principles and engineering steps involved in optogenetics and the targeted gene therapies mentioned above by bringing a focus on the specific vectors and molecules for cell signalization. The importance of vector choice and engineering methods are discussed. Second, we summarize the ongoing clinical trials and most recent discoveries for optogenetics and targeted gene therapies for IRDs. Finally, we then discuss the limits and current challenges of each novel therapy. We aim to provide for the first time scientific-based explanations for clinicians to justify the specificity of each therapy for one disease, which can help improve clinical decision-making tasks. Fly ash–slag-based alkali-activated materials have excellent mechanical performance and a low carbon footprint, and they have emerged as a promising alternative to Portland cement. Therefore, replacing traditional Portland cement with slag–desulfurization gypsum-based alkali-activated materials will help to make better use of the waste, protect the environment, and improve the materials' performance. In order to better understand it and thus better use it in engineering, it needs to be characterized for performance and compositional design. This study developed a novel framework for performance characterization and composition design by combining Categorical Gradient Boosting (CatBoost), simplicial homology global optimization (SHGO), and laboratory tests. The CatBoost characterization model was evaluated and discussed based on SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) and a partial dependence plot (PDP). Through the proposed framework, the optimal composition of the slag–desulfurization gypsum-based alkali-activated materials with the maximum flexural strength and compressive strength at 1, 3, and 7 days is Ca(OH)2: 3.1%, fly ash: 2.6%, DG: 0.53%, alkali: 4.3%, modulus: 1.18, and W/G: 0.49. Compared with the material composition obtained from the traditional experiment, the actual flexural strength and compressive strength at 1, 3, and 7 days increased by 26.67%, 6.45%, 9.64%, 41.89%, 9.77%, and 7.18%, respectively. In addition, the results of the optimal composition obtained by laboratory tests are very close to the predictions of the developed framework, which shows that CatBoost characterizes the performance well based on test data. Coal fly ash (CFA), a by-product of coal combustion, is a valuable raw material for various applications. However, the heterogeneous nature of the composition and properties of CFA provides challenges to its effective usage and utilisation. This study investigates the thermal behaviour of the fly ashes of lignite (FA1) and brown coal (FA2) and their fractions obtained by dry aerodynamic separation. Thermal analysis techniques, including thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and evolved gas analysis (EGA), were used to characterise the behaviour of the fly ash fractions while heating up to 1250 °C. The results reveal distinct differences in the thermal behaviour between ash types and among their different size fractions. For the FA1 ashes, the concentration of calcium-rich compounds and the level of recrystallisation at 950 °C increased with the decrease in particle size. The most abundant detected newly formed minerals were anhydrite, gehlenite, and anorthite, while coarser fractions were rich in quartz and mullite. For the FA2 ashes, the temperature of the onset of melting and agglomeration decreased with decreasing particle size and was already observed at 995 °C. Coarser fractions mostly remain unchanged, with a slight increase in quartz, mullite, and hematite content. Recrystallisation takes place in less extension compared to the FA1 ashes. The findings demonstrate that the aerodynamic separation of fly ashes into different size fractions can produce materials with varied thermal properties and reactivity, which can be used for specific applications. This study highlights the importance of thermal analysis in characterising fly ash properties and understanding their potential for utilisation in various applications involving thermal treatment or exposure to high-temperature conditions. Further research on advanced separation techniques and the in-depth characterisation of fly ash fractions is necessary to obtain materials with desired thermal properties and identify their most beneficial applications. In this paper, the effect of waste rock-wool dosage on the workability, mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, toughness and hydration products of PVA and steel fiber-reinforced mortars was investigated. The results showed that the fluidity of the mortar gradually decreased with the increase in the dosage of waste rock wool, with a maximum reduction of 10% at a dosage of 20%. The higher the dosage of waste rock wool, the greater the reduction in compressive strength. The effect of waste rock wool on strength reduction decreases with increasing age. When the dosage of waste rock wool was 10%, the 28 days of flexural and compressive strengths were reduced by 4.73% and 10.59%, respectively. As the dosage of waste rock wool increased, the flexural-to-compressive ratio increased, and at 20%, the maximum value of 28 days of flexural-to-compressive ratio was 0.210, which was increased by 28.05%. At a 5% dosage, the abraded volume was reduced from 500 mm3 to 376 mm3—a reduction of 24.8%. Waste rock wool only affects the hydration process and does not cause a change in the type of hydration products. Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR) ligands, upon binding, induce distinct gene expression profiles orchestrated by the AHR, leading to a spectrum of pro- or anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we designed, synthesized and evaluated three indole-containing potential AHR ligands (FluoAHRL: AGT-4, AGT-5 and AGT-6). All synthesized compounds were shown to emit fluorescence in the near-infrared. Their AHR agonist activity was first predicted using in silico docking studies, and then confirmed using AHR luciferase reporter cell lines. FluoAHRLs were tested in vitro using mouse peritoneal macrophages and T lymphocytes to assess their immunomodulatory properties. We then focused on AGT-5, as it illustrated the predominant anti-inflammatory effects. Notably, AGT-5 demonstrated the ability to foster anti-inflammatory regulatory T cells (Treg) while suppressing pro-inflammatory T helper (Th)17 cells in vitro. AGT-5 actively induced Treg differentiation from naïve CD4+ cells, and promoted Treg proliferation, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) expression and interleukin-10 (IL-10) production. The increase in IL-10 correlated with an upregulation of Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) expression. Importantly, the Treg-inducing effect of AGT-5 was also observed in human tonsil cells in vitro. AGT-5 showed no toxicity when applied to zebrafish embryos and was therefore considered safe for animal studies. Following oral administration to C57BL/6 mice, AGT-5 significantly upregulated Treg while downregulating pro-inflammatory Th1 cells in the mesenteric lymph nodes. Due to its fluorescent properties, AGT-5 could be visualized both in vitro (during uptake by macrophages) and ex vivo (within the lamina propria of the small intestine). Featured Application: Featured Application: The results presented inform a parametric wavelength at which photobiomodulation therapy of spinal cord injury could be most viable for clinical testing. This study compared the transcutaneous target level irradiances from the thoracic to lumbar segments of the interior spinal canal in three cadaver dogs, measured for light at four wavelengths (808 nm, 915 nm, 975 nm, and 1064 nm), common in photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). Intra-spinal irradiances at nine sites spanning approximately 8 cm in length were measured using a flexible intra-spinal probe under surface application of continuous-wave (CW) light with powers ranging from 0.5 W to 2 W. Surface illumination was applied using an acupuncture treatment head in three modes: non-contact with skin removed, non-contact with skin intact, and contact with skin intact. During surface application, the treatment head was positioned over the spinal canal near the 13th vertebrae (T13, surface site 1), and approximately 4 cm (surface site 5) and 8 cm (surface site 9) caudal to T13. At each position of the treatment head, the light was multiplexed among the four wavelengths at the same power setting. In all three modes of surface application, the target level irradiance at the 1064 nm wavelength was significantly greater than that at the other three wavelengths (p ≤ 0.0017). At a surface irradiance of ~157 mW/cm2, corresponding to 0.5 W light applied with the treatment head directly in contact with the skin, the intra-spinal irradiance at 1064 nm reached 0.137 ± 0.095 mW/cm2. Obtaining a dosage of PBMT-associative wavelengths of this magnitude at the level of the spinal canal may guide focused research into the transcutaneous applicability of PBMT for spinal cord injuries. Continuous cropping (CC) stress severely limits the growth and industrial development of Pinellia ternata. Epihomobrassinolide (EBR) is a natural product that widely participates in many the physiological activities of many plants. Thiamethoxam·flutolanil·azoxystrobin (TFA) has been registered as a seed coating agent in crop production. In this work, the effects of seeds soaked with EBR, seeds coated with TFA, and their co-application on the plant growth, electrophysiological information (as physiological activities related to plant electrical signals), leaf photosynthesis, plant resistance, bulb quality, and yield of CC P. ternata were evaluated. The aim of this work is to excogitate a practicable agronomic measure for ameliorating the growth of CC P. ternata. The results show that soaking the seeds with EBR or coating the seeds with TFA could effectively enhance the plant height, leaf area, and stem diameter of CC P. ternata, promote its emergence seedling ratio, and decrease its inverted seedling ratio, and their associated application was found to be more efficient. Additionally, their associated application effectively enhanced the intrinsic capacitance (IC), intracellular water metabolism, nutrient transport, and metabolic activity and decreased the intrinsic resistance (IR), impedance (IZ), capacitive reactance (IXc), and inductive reactance (IXL). Meanwhile, their associated application could reliably enhance the photosynthetic capacity and stress resistance, and effectively improve the bulb quality and yield. When using seawater and sea sand as mixes, the mechanical properties and durability of concrete are adversely affected because the raw materials themselves contain harmful ions. Fly ash is the tailings formed in the process of industrial production, the use of which does not require the burning of clinker, reducing CO2 emissions. Moreover, it belongs to a new type of cementitious materials with low emissions and high environmental protection. Fly ash enhances the properties of concrete and reduces the effect of harmful ions on concrete. Based on the above considerations, the corresponding specimens were prepared and subjected to cubic compressive strength, flexural strength, and seawater freezing and thawing resistance tests by using fly ash admixture as the main variable. A combination of macro-analysis and micro-analysis was used to investigate the effect of fly ash on the performance of seawater sea sand concrete. The results showed that fly ash significantly enhanced the mechanical properties and resistance to seawater freezing and thawing of seawater sea sand concrete. The best improvement in compressive strength and resistance to seawater freezing and thawing was achieved at a substitution rate of 20%. The maximum increase in compressive strength was 13.22%. The maximum reduction in mass loss rate was 57.26% and the strength loss rate was 43.14% after the specimens were subjected to seawater freezing and thawing 75 times. The maximum enhancement in flexural strength was 17.06% for a substitution rate of 10%. Through microanalysis, it can be seen that the incorporation of coal ash can enhance the compactness of concrete through the microaggregate effect as well as the volcanic ash reaction to promote the secondary hydration reaction, so as to strengthen the seawater freeze–thaw resistance of seawater sea sand concrete. Finally, the damage prediction model established using the mean GM (1, 1) model of gray system theory meets the requirements of the first level of prediction accuracy and can accurately predict the damage of seawater sea sand concrete under seawater freezing and thawing. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the properties of a binder based on high-calcium fly ash and silica fume with a complex additive consisting of calcium nitrate and magnesium chloride. The strength characteristics, the characteristics of the hydration process, and the phase composition of the hydration products of the binder were investigated. Silica fume was used to suppress the expansion of fly ash during hydration. A complex additive (CA) consisting of Ca(NO3)2 and MgCl2 provided a higher strength of binder than each of these salts separately. When testing a mortar with sand, the CA additive ensured that the strength of the specimens was 43.5% higher than the strength of the mortar with the addition of Ca(NO3)2 and 7.5% higher than the strength of the mortar with the MgCl2 additive. Calcium nitrate greatly accelerated the process of heat release in the first 60 min of binder hydration, and subsequently, conversely, slowed it down. The addition of MgCl2 gave a significantly greater thermal effect than Ca(NO3)2. When the two salts acted together, even a small fraction of magnesium chloride (0.2 of CA) compensated for the retarding effect of calcium nitrate and provided heat release for the binder that was almost as good as that of MgCl2. The purpose of this research is to investigate the utilization potential of recycled powder made from spent coffee grounds (SCGs) and aerated concrete blocks (ACBs) in green-growing concrete. The green-growing concrete is prepared using ACB powder and SCG ash as raw materials instead of 5%, 15%, and 25% and 5%, 10%, and 15% cement, respectively. Then, the two raw materials are compounded with the optimal content. The compressive strength and alkalinity of green-growing concrete at 7d and 28d and the frost resistance after 25 freeze–thaw cycles at 28d are studied. The results showed that the optimum content of ACB powder and SCG ash was 5%. Replacing 5% cement with recycled powder could improve the strength of concrete. The alkalinity of concrete containing ACB powder gradually increased, while the alkalinity of concrete containing SCG ash gradually decreased. The alkalinity of ACB-SCG powder was lower than that of ACB powder but slightly higher than that of SCG ash. The frost resistance of concrete containing ACB powder decreased gradually, and the frost resistance of concrete containing SCG ash increased first and then decreased greatly. In the context of climate change and the circular economy, biochar agricultural and environmental applications have attracted a good deal of attention. Biochar has unique characteristics like surface area, porosity, water-holding capacity, pH, surface charge, and nutrients. This study reviews the biochar production from olive pomace (OP) and olive stone (OS) byproducts, its chemical and physical characterization, and its environmental application. The current review highlights the conditions for biochar production, the effects of pyrolysis temperature, and feedstock type on the physicochemical properties of biochar. High pyrolysis temperature (>500 °C) promotes a high specific surface area, high porosity (especially for OS biochars), and pH as well as the content of ash and fixed carbon, but generates low cation exchange capacity (CEC) and electrical conductivity (EC) and high values of O/C and H/C ratio. OP biochar also presents a high C amount, and ash content, i.e., rich in nutrients and high alkalizing capacity. OP biochar serves as an important source of plant nutrients, especially potassium. After adding both types of biochar, aggregate stability and the amount of water held in soil increase, and bulk density and bioavailability of trace elements decrease. Thus, biochar from olive mill wastes can be a potential plant nutrient reservoir, a good amendment to improve soil properties and long-term carbon sequestration. Results presented in this review can be used to build designer biochars from olive mill wastes to help solve environmental issues (water purification and pollutant remediation) and are suitable for improving soil physical chemistry characteristics and crop growth. Background: Business continuity entails the potential negative consequences of uncertainty on a firm's ability to achieve strategic objectives. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted business continuity due to lockdowns, travel restrictions, and social distancing measures. Consequently, firms adopted specific supply chain (SC) practices to effectively navigate this global crisis. Methods: This research adopted a stochastic approach based on Bayesian Networks to evaluate the implications of business continuity on firms' decisions to embrace SC practices, focusing on omnichannel strategies, SC coordination, and technologies such as artificial intelligence systems, big data and machine learning, and mobile applications. Results: Our findings revealed that firms facing disruption in a single performance area can apply specific strategies to maintain resilience. However, multiple areas of underperformance necessitate a varied approach. Conclusions: According to our empirical analysis, omnichannel strategies are critical when disruptions simultaneously impact quality, inventory, sales, and ROI, particularly during major disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic. AI and big data become vital when multiple risks coalesce, enhancing areas such as customer service and supply chain visibility. Moreover, supply chain coordination and mobile app adoption are effective against individual performance risks, proving crucial in mitigating disruption impacts across various business aspects. These findings help policy-makers and business owners to have a better understanding of how business continuity based on performance resistance to disruptions pushes companies to adopt different practices including new technologies and supply chain coordination. Pyrolysis is a recognized alternative for the sustainable management of contaminated organic waste, as it yields energy-rich gas, oil, and a carbon-rich biochar product. Low-volatility compounds, however, such as heavy metals (HMs; As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) typically accumulate in biochars, limiting their application potential, especially for soil improvement. The distribution of HMs in pyrolysis products is influenced by treatment temperature and the properties of both the HMs and the feedstock. There is a significant knowledge gap in our understanding of the mass balances of HMs in full-scale industrial pyrolysis systems. Therefore, the fate of HMs during full-scale relevant pyrolysis (500–800 °C) of seven contaminated feedstocks and a clean wood feedstock were investigated for the first time. Most of the HMs accumulated in the biochar (fixation rates (FR) >70%), but As, Cd, Pb, and Zn partly partitioned into the flue gas at temperatures ≥ 600 °C, as demonstrated by FRs of <30% for some of the feedstocks. Emission factors (EFs, mg per tonne biochar produced) for particle-bound HMs (<0.45 µm) were 0.04–7.7 for As, 0.002–0.41 for Cd, 0.01–208 for Pb, and 0.09–342 for Zn. Only minor fractions of the HMs were found in the condensate (0–11.5%). To investigate the mobility of HMs accumulated in the biochars, a novel leaching test for sustained pH drop (at pH 4, 5.5 and 7) was developed. It was revealed that increasing pyrolysis temperature led to stronger incorporation of HMs in the sludge-based biochar matrix: after pyrolysis at 800 °C, at pH 4, <1% of total Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb and < 10% of total As and Zn contents in the biochars were leached. Most interestingly, the high HM mobility observed in wood-based biochars compared to sewage-sludge-based biochars indicates the need to develop specific environmental-management thresholds for soil application of sewage-sludge biochars. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is used for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes. According to recent literature, utilizing IPL may boost upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Concerns have been raised about potential thermal damage to the soft and hard tissues in the oral cavity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the safety of using IPL of various intensities in the tissues of the oral cavity. Methods: Three adult pigs were included in the trial. The oral cavity was divided into four quadrants and projected with a wide range of IPL settings. Alveolar bone, buccal mucosa, and gingival tissue samples were taken immediately and after 24 h. In each animal, one quadrant of the jaw was left untreated and served as a control. All samples were processed and stained with H&E. Results: Clinical examination showed no evidence of changes in the integrity of the examined tissues. Histological examination of the different tissues did not demonstrate significant thermal damage or changes in the characterization of the cells compared to the control tissues. Biosurfactants account for about 12% of the global value of the surfactant market, which is currently dominated by synthetic surfactants obtained from fossil sources. Yet, the production of biosurfactants from renewable feedstock is bound to increase, driven by the increasing pressure from both society and governments for chemistry-based industries to become more ecofriendly and economically sustainable. A photo-chemical oxidation process is reported here, yielding new biosurfactants from urban biowaste in water that perform as a solvent and terminal oxidant reagent at room temperature without the addition of conventional oxidants and catalysts. Products with 200–500 kDa molecular weight are obtained. They lower the surface tension of water down to 34 mN/m at 0.5–2 g/L concentration. The estimated cost is rather low (0.1–1.5 EUR/kg), which is competitive with the cost of synthetic surfactants but much lower than the cost of the best-performing bacterial surfactants. For the implementation of the photo-chemical oxidation process at the industrial level, the results suggest that the new biosurfactants obtained in the present work may not reach the performance level of the best-performing bacterial surfactants capable of lowering the surface tension of water down to 28 mN/m. Ensuring a stable and cost-effective energy supply is a major challenge for the International Energy Agency (IEA). Additionally, the effectiveness of vermiculite and dolomite in mitigating the adverse effects of diesel oil, a petroleum-derived product, on plant growth and development, and on the biochemical activity of the soil, were assessed. Therefore, an attempt was made in the study to determine the energy properties of Zea mays, which is suitable for cultivation in contaminated areas. For these purposes, several parameters were analyzed in its biomass, including calorific value (Q), heating value (Hv), energy yield (Yep), ash content, and the presence of carbon (C), hydrogen (H), sulfur (S), nitrogen (N), and oxygen (O). Biochemical activity was measured through the evaluation of soil enzymes serving as indicators for the carbon (dehydrogenases, catalase, β-glucosidase), nitrogen (urease), sulfur (arylsulfatase), and phosphorus (acid and alkaline phosphatase) cycles. The plant greenness index was also determined. It has been demonstrated that diesel oil does not alter the calorific value of Zea mays biomass but significantly reduces the biomass quantity and destabilizes the biochemical properties of the soil. Zea mays contained an average of 6.84% ash, 49.88% C, 5.65% H, 0.17% S, 2.90% N, and 34.57% O. The calorific value of Zea mays ranged from 15.02 to 15.54 MJ kg−1 d.m. of plants, and the heating value ranged from 18.25 to 19.21 MJ kg−1 d.m. of plants. The biomass obtained from contaminated soil is recommended for energy purposes. The sorbents used—vermiculite and dolomite—proved to be less effective in the remediation of soil contaminated with diesel oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different mix ratios on the mechanical properties of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (LSFRC) and to determine an optimum mix ratio. The effects of four factors, namely, fly ash content, volume fraction of steel fibers, water–cement ratio, and sand rate, on the mechanical properties of LSFRC were investigated through orthogonal experiments. The microstructure of LSFRC at different mix ratios was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and an optimal mix ratio was derived. The results showed that the water–cement ratio and the volume fraction of steel fibers were the main factors affecting the mechanical properties of LSFRC. When the water–cement ratio was 0.38 and 0.42, the combined mechanical properties of concrete were superior. Steel fiber content between 0.6% and 1% had a significant effect on the splitting tensile strength of concrete. The effect of sand rate on compressive and splitting tensile strengths was consistent, with a significant effect on both at a sand rate of 40%. In terms of microstructure, 20% fly ash content promotes the hydration of concrete. The optimum LSFRC mix ratio determined was 0.42 water–cement ratio, 0.6% steel fiber content, 40% sand rate, and 20% fly ash content. Experimental verification using this mix ratio showed that the compressive, flexural, and split tensile strengths were increased by 3%, 19%, and 33%, respectively, when compared to ordinary concrete. Red light (670 nm) energy controls vasodilation via the formation of a transferable endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO)-precursor-containing substance, its intracellular traffic, and exocytosis. Here we investigated the underlying mechanistic effect of oxidative stress on light-mediated vasodilation by using pressure myography on dissected murine arteries and immunofluorescence on endothelial cells. Treatment with antioxidants Trolox and catalase decreased vessel dilation. In the presence of catalase, a lower number of exosomes were detected in the vessel bath. Light exposure resulted in increased cellular free radical levels. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species were also more abundant but did not alter cellular ATP production. Red light enhanced the co-localization of late exosome marker CD63 and cellular S-nitrosoprotein to a greater extent than high glucose, suggesting that a mild oxidative stress favors the localization of NO precursor in late exosomes. Exocytosis regulating protein Rab11 was more abundant after irradiation. Our findings conclude that red-light-induced gentle oxidative stress facilitates the dilation of blood vessels, most likely through empowering the traffic of vasodilatory substances.
