Gas sensing is essential for detecting and measuring gas concentrations across various environments, with applications in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and healthcare. The integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials, organic materials, and metal oxides has significantly advanced gas sensor technology, enhancing its sensitivity, selectivity, and response times at room temperature. This review examines the progress in optically activated gas sensors, with emphasis on 2D materials, metal oxides, and organic materials, due to limited studies on their use in optically activated gas sensors, in contrast to other traditional gas-sensing technologies. We detail the unique properties of these materials and their impact on improving the figures of merit (FoMs) of gas sensors. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), with their high surface-to-volume ratio and tunable band gap, show exceptional performance in gas detection, especially when activated by UV light. Graphene-based sensors also demonstrate high sensitivity and low detection limits, making them suitable for various applications. Although organic materials and hybrid structures, such as metal–organic frameworks (MoFs) and conducting polymers, face challenges related to stability and sensitivity at room temperature, they hold potential for future advancements. Optically activated gas sensors incorporating metal oxides benefit from photoactive nanomaterials and UV irradiation, further enhancing their performance. This review highlights the potential of the advanced materials in developing the next generation of gas sensors, addressing current research gaps and paving the way for future innovations. The surfaces of ceramic products are replete with numerous defects, such as those that appear during the diamond grinding of sintered SiAlON ceramics. The defective surface layer is the reason for the low effectiveness of TiZrN coatings under abrasive and fretting wear. An obvious solution is the removal of an up to 4-µm-thick surface layer containing the defects. It was proposed in the present study to etch the layer with fast argon atoms. At the atom energy of 5 keV and a 0.5 mA/cm2 current density, the ions were converted into fast atoms and the sputtering rate for the SiAlON samples reached 20 μm/h. No defects were observed in the microstructures of coatings deposited after beam treatment for half an hour. The treatment reduced the volumetric abrasive wear by five times. Lung cancer remains a major contributor to cancer fatalities, with cigarette smoking known to be responsible for up to 80% of cases. Based on the ability of cigarette smoke to induce inflammation in the lungs and increased lung cancer incidence in smokers with inflammatory conditions such as COPD, we hypothesized that inflammation plays an important role in the carcinogenicity of cigarette smoke. To test this hypothesis, we performed multi-omic analyses of Type II pneumocytes of A/J mice exposed to cigarette smoke for various time periods. We found that cigarette smoke exposure resulted in significant changes in DNA methylation and hydroxymethylation, gene expression patterns, and protein abundance that were partially reversible and contributed to an inflammatory and potentially oncogenic phenotype. Karst caves, formed by the erosion of soluble carbonate rocks, provide unique ecosystems characterized by stable temperatures and high humidity. These conditions support diverse microbial communities, including wall microbial fouling, aquatic biofilms, and planktonic communities. This study discloses the taxonomic diversity of protists in aquatic biotopes of Shulgan-Tash Cave, a culturally significant site and popular tourist destination, by 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding. Our findings reveal the rich protist communities in the cave's aquatic biotopes, with the highest diversity observed in Blue Lake at the cave entrance. In contrast, Distant Lake in the depth of the cave was inhabited by specific communities of plankton, mats, and pool fingers, which exhibited lower richness and evenness, and were adapted to extreme conditions (cold, darkness, and limited nutrients). High-rank taxa including Opisthokonta, Stramenopiles, and Rhizaria dominated all biotopes, aligning with observations from other subterranean environments. Specific communities of biotopes inside the cave featured distinct dominant taxa: amoeboid stramenopile (Synchromophyceae) and flagellates (Choanoflagellatea and Sandona) in mats; flagellates (Choanoflagellatea, Bicoecaceae, Ancyromonadida) and amoeboid protists (Filasterea) in pool fingers; flagellates (Ochromonadales, Glissomonadida, Synchromophyceae), fungi-like protists (Peronosporomycetes), and fungi (Ustilaginomycotina) in plankton. The specificity of the communities was supported by LEfSe analysis, which revealed enriched or differentially abundant protist taxa in each type of biotope. The predominance of Choanoflagellatea in the communities of cave mats and pool fingers, as well as the predominance of Synchromophyceae in the cave mats, appears to be a unique feature of Shulgan-Tash Cave. The cold-tolerant yeast Malassezia recorded in other caves was present in both plankton and biofilm communities, suggesting its resilience to low temperatures. However, no potentially harmful fungi were detected, positioning this research as a baseline for future monitoring. Our results emphasize the need for ongoing surveillance and conservation efforts to protect the fragile ecosystems of Shulgan-Tash Cave from human-induced disturbances and microbial invasions. Stonikacidin A (1), the first representative of a new class of 4-bromopyrrole alkaloids containing an aldonic acid core, was isolated from the marine sponge Lissodendoryx papillosa. The compound is named in honor of Prof. Valentin A. Stonik, who is one of the outstanding investigators in the field of marine natural chemistry. The structure of 1 was determined using NMR, MS analysis, and chemical correlations. The L-idonic acid core was established by the comparison of GC, NMR, MS, and optical rotation data of methyl-pentaacetyl-aldonates obtained from the hydrolysis products of 1 and standard hexoses. The L-form of the idonic acid residue in 1 was confirmed by GC analysis of pentaacetate of (S)-2-butyl ester of the hydrolysis product from 1 and compared with corresponding derivatives of L- and D-idonic acids. The biosynthetic pathway for stonikacidin A (1) was proposed. The alkaloid 1 inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli test strains, as well as affected the formation of S. aureus and E. coli biofilms. Compound 1 inhibited the activity of sortase A. In recent years, the role of the atmosphere in the formation of the chemical composition of water in Lake Baikal and its tributaries has been increasing. In this regard, the study of equivalent black carbon (eBC) in the air above the lake and its coast has an important practical application. This paper presents the results of the mass concentration of eBC and submicron aerosol in the air above the water area of Lake Baikal, which were obtained during expeditions onboard research vessels in the summer of 2019 and 2023. We analyzed the data from the coastal monitoring station Listvyanka. To measure eBC, an MDA-02 aethalometer was used in the water area of the lake, and a BAC-10 aethalometer at the Listvyanka station. The background level of the eBC concentration in the air at different areas of the lake ranged between 0.15 and 0.3 µg m−3. The results of the two expeditions revealed the influence of the coastal settlements and the air mass transport along the valleys of the lake's large tributaries on the five- to twentyfold growth of the eBC concentration in the near-water atmosphere. In the diurnal dynamics of eBC near settlements, we recorded high values in the evening and at night. In background areas, the diurnal dynamics were poorly manifested. In the summer of 2019, there were smoke plumes in the water area of Lake Baikal from distant wildfires and a local fire site on the east coast of the lake. The eBC concentration increased to 5–6 µg m−3, which was 10 to 40 times higher than the background. The long-range transport of plumes from coal-fired thermal power plants in large cities of the region made the major contribution to the eBC concentration at «Listvyanka» in winter, which data on aerosol, gas impurities, and meteorological parameters confirmed. Mesoporous hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used in various applications, such as the biomedical field, as a catalytic, as a sensor, and many others. The aim of this work was to obtain HA powders by means of chemical precipitation in a medium containing a polymer—polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)—with concentrations ranging from 0 to 10%. The HA powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma, electron paramagnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The specific surface area (SSA), pore volume, and pore size distributions were determined by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption measurements, and the zeta potential was established. The formation of macropores in powder agglomerates was determined using SEM and TEM. The synthesis in 10% PVP increased the SSA from 101.3 to 158.0 m2/g, while the ripening for 7 days led to an increase from 112.3 to 195.8 m2/g, with the total pore volume rising from 0.37 to 0.71 cm3/g. These materials could be classified as meso-macroporous HA. Such materials can serve as the basis for various applications requiring improved textural properties and may lay the foundation for the creation of bulk 3D materials using a technique that allows for the preservation of their unique pore structure. Implementing the IIoT concept in industry involves the development and implementation of online systems monitoring the technical state of electromechanical equipment. This is achieved through the use of digital twins and digital shadows (object state observers). The tasks of mastering new rolling profiles and optimizing plate mill rolling programs require improved methods for calculating equivalent motor currents and torques. Known methods are generally based on calculations using smoothed load diagrams, which are assumed to be identical for the upper and lower main drive (UMD and LMD) rolls. These methods do not consider the differences in actual loads (currents or torques) in steady rolling states. Experiments performed on the 5000 plate mill have shown that due to speed mismatches, the UMD and LMD torques differ three times or more. This causes overheating of the more heavily loaded motor, insulation life reduction, and premature failure. Therefore, the problem of developing and implementing techniques for monitoring the load and thermal regimes of motors using digital observers is relevant. The paper's contribution is the first justification of the concept of object-oriented digital shadows. They are developed for specific classes of industrial units using open-source software. This research justifies a methodology for assessing motor load and temperature by processing arrays of motor currents or torques generated during rolling. An equivalent load observer and a temperature observer were proposed and implemented using Matlab-Simulink resources. The algorithm was implemented on the mill 5000 and tuned using an earlier-developed virtual commissioning methodology with digital twins. Thermal regimes were studied, proving that torque alignment ensures equal motor temperatures. The proposed considerations contribute to the development of the theory and practice for creating digital systems to monitor the technical condition of electromechanical and mechatronic systems and implementing the Industry 4.0 concept at industrial enterprises. The COVID-19 pandemic has altered respiratory infection patterns in pediatric populations. The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant and relaxation of public health measures have increased the likelihood of coinfections. Previous studies show conflicting results regarding the impact of viral and bacterial coinfections with SARS-CoV-2 on severity of pediatric disease. This study investigated the prevalence and clinical impact of coinfections among children hospitalized with COVID-19 during the Omicron wave. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 574 hospitalized patients aged under 18 years in Russia, from January 2022 to March 2023. Samples from patients were tested for SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory pathogens using qRT-PCR, bacterial culture tests and mass spectrometry, and ELISA. Approximately one-third of COVID-19 cases had coinfections, with viral and bacterial coinfections occurring at similar rates. Adenovirus and Staphylococcus aureus were the most common viral and bacterial coinfections, respectively. Viral coinfections were associated with higher fevers and increased bronchitis, while bacterial coinfections correlated with longer duration of illness and higher pneumonia rates. Non-SARS-CoV-2 respiratory viruses were linked to more severe lower respiratory tract complications than SARS-CoV-2 monoinfection. These findings suggest that during the Omicron wave, seasonal respiratory viruses may have posed a greater threat to children's health than SARS-CoV-2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this review paper is to survey the fractal morphology of scale-invariant patterns. We are particularly focusing on the scale and conformal invariance, as well as on the fractal non-uniformity (multifractality), inhomogeneity (lacunarity), and anisotropy (succolarity). We argue that these features can be properly quantified by the following six adimensional numbers: the fractal (e.g., similarity, box-counting, or Assouad) dimension, conformal dimension, degree of multifractal non-uniformity, coefficient of multifractal asymmetry, index of lacunarity, and index of fractal anisotropy. Pollution by active ingredients is one of the most significant and widespread forms of pollution on Earth. Medicines can have a negative impact on ecosystems, and contamination can have unpredictable consequences. An urgent and unexplored task is to study the Lake Baikal ecosystem and its organisms for the presence of trace concentrations of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Our study aimed to conduct a qualitative analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients, and quantitative analysis of ibuprofen in endemic amphipods of Lake Baikal, using methods of high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), ibuprofen, acetaminophen, azithromycin, dimetridazole, metronidazole, amikacin, spiramycin, and some tetracycline antibiotics were detected in the studied littoral amphipods. We also detected different annual loads of active pharmaceutical ingredients on amphipods. Using the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode mentioned in GOST International Technical Standards, we detected molecules, fragmented as amikacin, chlortetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, dimetridazole, metronidazole and spiramycin. Epilepsy is known to cause alterations in neural networks. However, many details of these changes remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in the properties of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons and their synaptic inputs in a rat lithium–pilocarpine model of epilepsy. In the chronic phase of the model, we found a marked loss of pyramidal neurons in the CA1 area. However, the membrane properties of the neurons remained essentially unaltered. The results of the electrophysiological and morphological studies indicate that the direct pathway from the entorhinal cortex to CA1 neurons is reinforced in epileptic animals, whereas the inputs to them from CA3 are either unaltered or even diminished. In particular, the dendritic spine density in the str. lacunosum moleculare, where the direct pathway from the entorhinal cortex terminates, was found to be 2.5 times higher in epileptic rats than in control rats. Furthermore, the summation of responses upon stimulation of the temporoammonic pathway was enhanced by approximately twofold in epileptic rats. This enhancement is believed to be a significant contributing factor to the heightened epileptic activity observed in the entorhinal cortex of epileptic rats using an ex vivo 4-aminopyridine model. The paper presents the results of a systematic microfluidic study of the application of nanosuspensions for enhanced oil recovery. For the first time, approximately a dozen nanosuspensions prepared by the dilution of silica sols as displacement fluids were considered. The concentration of nanoparticles in the suspensions varied from 0.125 to 2 wt%, and their size ranged from 10 to 35 nm. Furthermore, the silica sols under consideration differed in their compositions of functional groups and pH. The effects of concentration, nanoparticle size, fluid flow rate, and the viscosity of the displaced oil were investigated using microfluidic technology. The microfluidic experiments demonstrated that the application of nanosuspensions for water flooding has significant potential. The efficiency of oil displacement by nanosuspensions was found to increase significantly (up to 30%) with the increasing concentration and decreasing average size of nanoparticles. In preceding research endeavors, the frequency characteristics of a ring resonator on surface acoustic waves made of various materials were studied. Investigations encompassed fixation techniques within the housing, the impact of external variables on these components, and the most efficient configuration of the interdigital transducer within the ring resonator to curtail bandwidth. This current study is dedicated to investigating the correlation between sensitivity and the highest measurable acceleration concerning the dimensions of these sensitive elements. Furthermore, it involves assessing the attributes of produced experimental samples to verify the simulation results. The results obtained represent the possibility of creating a micromechanical accelerometer that can be used in the automotive industry as a g-sensor shock, as well as in industries where the numerical value of high overloads is required. Enzymatic transglycosylation of the fleximer base 4-(4-aminopyridine-3-yl)-1H-pyrazole using recombinant E. coli purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) resulted in the formation of "non-typical" minor products of the reaction. In addition to "typical" N1-pyrazole nucleosides, a 4-imino-pyridinium riboside and a N1-pyridinium-N1-pyrazole bis-ribose derivative were formed. N1-Pyrazole 2′-deoxyribonucleosides and a N1-pyridinium-N1-pyrazole bis-2′-deoxyriboside were formed. But 4-imino-pyridinium deoxyriboside was not formed in the reaction mixture. The role of thermodynamic parameters of key intermediates in the formation of reaction products was elucidated. To determine the mechanism of binding and activation of heterocyclic substrates in the E. coli PNP active site, molecular modeling of the fleximer base and reaction products in the enzyme active site was carried out. As for N1-pyridinium riboside, there are two possible locations for it in the PNP active site. The presence of a relatively large space in the area of amino acid residues Phe159, Val178, and Asp204 allows the ribose residue to fit into that space, and the heterocyclic base can occupy a position that is suitable for subsequent glycosylation. 1,2,4-Triazole derivatives have a wide range of biological activities. The most well-known drug that contains 1,2,4-triazole as part of its structure is the nucleoside analogue ribavirin, an antiviral drug. Finding new nucleosides based on 1,2,4-triazole is a topical task. The aim of this study was to synthesize ribosides and deoxyribosides of 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione derivatives and test their antiviral activity against herpes simplex viruses. Three compounds from a series of synthesized mono- and disubstituted 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione derivatives were found to be substrates for E. coli purine nucleoside phosphorylase. Of six prepared nucleosides, the riboside and deoxyriboside of 3-phenacylthio-1,2,4-triazole were obtained at good yields. The yields of the disubstituted 1,2,4-triazol-3-thiones were low due to the effect of bulky substituents at the C3 and C5 positions on the selectivity of enzymatic glycosylation for one particular nitrogen atom in the triazole ring. The results of cytotoxic and antiviral studies on acyclovir-sensitive wild-type strain HSV-1/L2(TK+) and acyclovir-resistant strain (HSV-1/L2/RACV) in Vero E6 cell culture showed that the incorporation of a thiobutyl substituent into the C5 position of 3-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole results in a significant increase in the cytotoxicity of the base and antiviral activity. The highest antiviral activity was observed in the 3-phenacylthio-1-(β-D-ribofuranosyl)-1,2,4-triazole and 5-butylthio-1-(2-deoxy-β-D-ribofuranosyl)-3-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole nucleosides, with their selectivity indexes being significantly higher than that of ribavirin. The aim of the study was to evaluate the local status of the sclera in lattice retinal degeneration. Patients with lattice degeneration, snail-track degeneration, or horseshoe retinal breaks were included. One lesion of a single eye in each patient was captured with cross-sectional optical coherence tomography (OCT) along and across the greatest lesion dimension. The maximum height of scleral indentation was measured and compared between different lesion types and between lattice lesions with and without retinal breakage or local detachment. The correlation between the maximum height of the scleral indentation of lattice lesions and the age of the patients was calculated. Seventy-five eyes of 75 patients (44.4 ± 14.7 years; 35 males and 30 females) were included. OCT showed variable local scleral indentation in 52 out of 55 (94.5%) lattice lesions, in five out of nine (55.5%) snail-tack lesions, and in three out of eleven (27.3%) horseshoe breaks. The maximum scleral indentation within lattice lesions, snail-tack lesions, and horseshoe breaks was 227.2 ± 111.3, 22.0 ± 49.2, and 88.5 ± 48.4 µm, respectively (p < 0.001 for snail-tack lesions and horseshoe breaks compared to lattice lesions). Lattice lesions with retinal breaks and/or local retinal detachment had statistically significantly lower scleral indentation than those without (p = 0.01). The height of the scleral indentation of lattice lesions was positively correlated with patient age (r = 0.51, p = 0.03). In conclusion, scleral indentation is one of the hallmarks of lattice retinal degeneration and may be associated with a reduced risk of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanochitin, especially in the form of chitin nanowhiskers (ChNWs), represents a significant advance in biopolymer technology due to its high specific surface area, superior tensile strength, and excellent thermal stability. Derived from crustacean waste, which contains 15–40% of chitin, these materials provide a sustainable option that diverts waste from landfills and contributes to environmental conservation. Traditional methods of isolating nanochitin are energy-intensive and generate substantial waste. This study introduces a more sustainable method using inexpensive ionic liquids (ILs) such as [Hmim][HSO4] and [HN222][HSO4], which bypass the costly and destructive steps of traditional procedures. This study also identified the byproduct in IL-mediated chitin hydrolysis reaction as calcium sulfate dihydrate and presented a solution to circumvent the byproduct formation. The effectiveness of the [HN222][HSO4] IL in producing ChNWs from both purified chitin and crustacean biomass was assessed, showing a high yield and maintaining the purity and structural integrity of chitin, thereby demonstrating a significant reduction in the environmental footprint of ChNW production. Poor metabolic health and obesity have significant impacts on the outcomes of patients suffering from chronic liver disease, particularly those with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. Patients with such comorbidities who require liver transplant evaluation for advancing liver disease or liver failure require special consideration due to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, renal dysfunction, sarcopenic obesity, and cancer. Those who have had a history of prior bariatric surgery pose specific anatomical constraints and may also be at increased risk of alcohol use disorder. Pre-operative risk assessment as well as strict control of metabolic risk factors are essential to reduce intra-operative and post-liver transplant complications. As immunosuppressive therapy exacerbates metabolic dysfunction and risk for cancer, post-liver transplant care must focus on balancing the need to prevent rejection and the impact of progressive metabolic dysfunction in this unique, but growing, patient population. In this study, the new data of experimental studies of the atmospheric particulate matter (PM) on the south-eastern coast of Lake Baikal (station Boyarsky) were analyzed in summer 2021. High-altitude measuring sites were arranged in the forest massif (mast, 16 m) and above the meadow vegetation (mast, 30 m). By the Giardina M. model and based on the measurements data the calculations of the deposition flux density of aerosol particles on forest and meadow vegetation were made. Our preliminary results of prediction obtained by Giardina M. model good agrees with measured dry deposition velocities across particle sizes. In the forest, the mass concentration of aerosol particles differs slightly from the mass concentrations in the grasslands and is equal on average 7.9 × 10−3 mg m−3 for the size particles below 200 nm (PM0.2) and 6.7 × 10−4 mg m−3 for particles in the size range from 0.2 to 10 μm (PM0.2–10). However, we found that mass flux density of aerosol particle is almost 4.8 times higher under forest canopy than in meadow vegetation. In addition, the leaf area index (LAI), which characterize the effective area of particle deposition, is also significantly higher in the tree canopy (5.6) compared to the grassland vegetation (2.4). Trees' growth and areal responses to changing climate are primarily expected within the edges of the species range. Here, we compared the responses of Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour), a moisture-sensitive species, and drought-resistant larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) at the southern part of their ranges in the Siberian Mountains (the Tannu-Ola Ridge). We study the species' growth and proportion in the forests from forest-steppe to treeline ecotone along the elevation gradient. These studies are based on radial growth index (GI) analysis and GI dependence on the climate variables. We used satellite time series to detect the land cover changes (areas of larch and Siberian pine, as well as shrubs and birch). We compared trees' GI before and after warming "restart" in the late 1990s. Generally, GI dependence on the air temperature was negative at elevations below c. 1600 m a.s.l., whereas GI dependence on the moisture variables (precipitation, vapor pressure deficit, and soil moisture) was positive for both species. Above 1600 m, increasing air temperatures stimulated species growth, whereas the influence of moisture variables was negative (for larch) or neutral (for Siberian pine). After the warming restart, the GI of both conifers increased in moisture-sufficient high elevations and treeline ecotone, whereas within low elevations (<1300 m), the GI was stagnant or suppressed. Both species', especially Siberian pine, negative growth dependence on air temperature and positive dependence on the moisture variables strongly increased since the warming restart. We found a risen growth dependence of both species on the soil-stored water during the previous year (September–October), which smoothed moisture stress at the beginning of the growing season. Yet both species' growth also suffered as a result of early spring warms. We found that larch is migrating in both uphill and downhill directions, while Siberian pine is migrating uphill only. Forests loss occurred at low elevations (<1300 m), whereas forest and shrub gain occurred at high (>2000 m) ones. The upper boundary of the forests and shrubs is migrating uphill at rates of about 0.8 and 0.3 m/y, respectively. We observed a decrease in Siberian pine proportion in the forests, whereas areas of larch and birch strongly increased (by 150% and 100%, respectively), which indicates the retreat of Siberian pine from its southern habitat. This article outlines the relevance of building online telemetry systems for online monitoring of the technical conditions of rolling mill equipment. Electromechanical systems of the horizontal stand of the plate Mill 5000 are described, when operating in harsh conditions caused by the shock loading when workpieces enter the stand. It is noted that dynamic torque overloads, exceeding the rated motor torque by many-fold, cause the fatigue failure of spindle joints and breakage of rolls. In this regard, the development and implementation of systems for monitoring the elastic torque on spindles are extremely urgent. This issue has long been studied, but the references provide no information on the building principles and hardware composition of such systems. The use of strain gauges connected according to a balanced bridge circuit to measure the elastic torque is justified. This paper's contribution is the proposed modular principle for building a telemetry monitoring system based on the analysis of known techniques for measuring and transmitting diagnostic data. The developed system structure is provided and the concept of data transfer and processing are explained. This article suggests the inductive power supply of a measuring unit mounted on a shaft without the use of batteries. A hardware structure was developed to be applied in a system for measuring, transmitting, and visualizing signals proportional to the elastic torque, manufactured on the basis of data measuring instruments by leading companies. The specifics of placement and connection of strain gauges are considered. The hardware providing a wireless power supply to the signal encoder and digital data transfer between the transmitter and receiver is described. The results of implementing the system on Mill 5000 are provided. The installation of a telemetry ring and a receiving head for the inductive power supply and data reception is shown. An experimental assessment of the elastic torques occurring when workpieces enter the cage was obtained by implementing a drive control algorithm which provided biting in the drive acceleration mode. The reliability of measuring the elastic torque with an error not exceeding ±5% and the reduction of dynamic loads on the spindle by 1.3–1.5 times due to the elimination of impacts from closing angular gaps in spindle joints was confirmed. This increases the service life of mechanical equipment and reduces the cost of eliminating the accident aftermath. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of administering 80 ppm nitric oxide in reducing kidney injury, mitochondrial dysfunction and regulated cell death in kidneys during experimental perfusion. Twenty-four sheep were randomized into four groups: two groups received 80 ppm NO conditioning with 90 min of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB + NO) or 90 min of CPB and hypothermic circulatory arrest (CPB + CA + NO), while two groups received sham protocols (CPB and CPB + CA). Kidney injury was assessed using laboratory (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, an acute kidney injury biomarker) and morphological methods (morphometric histological changes in kidney biopsy specimens). A kidney biopsy was performed 60 min after weaning from mechanical perfusion. NO did not increase the concentrations of inhaled NO2 and methemoglobin significantly. The NO-conditioning groups showed less severe kidney injury and mitochondrial dysfunction, with statistical significance in the CPB + NO group and reduced tumor necrosis factor-α expression as a trigger of apoptosis and necroptosis in renal tissue in the CPB + CA + NO group compared to the CPB + CA group. The severity of mitochondrial dysfunction in renal tissue was insignificantly lower in the NO-conditioning groups. In the present work, the evolution of the microstructure in additively manufactured 17-4PH stainless steel, which was subjected to laser surface alloying with amorphous boron and nitrogen at the varying process parameters, was studied. The main aim was to improve surface hardness and hence potential wear resistance of the steel. Scanning electron microscopy, wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDS), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were used. It was shown that the final microstructure developed in the laser-melted zone (LMZ) is dependent on a variety of processing parameters (1 and 1.5 mm laser beam spot diameters; 200, 400, and 600 mm/min laser scan speeds), which primarily influence the morphology and orientation of the eutectic dendrites in the LMZ. It was metallographically proven that a fully eutectic microstructure, except for one sample containing 60 ± 4.2% of the eutectic, was revealed in the LMZ in the studied samples. The results of WDS and AES also confirmed alloying the LMZ with nitrogen. The formation of the boron eutectic and the supersaturation of the α-iron solid solution with boron and nitrogen (as a part of the eutectic mixture) led to enhanced microhardness, which was significantly higher compared with that of the heat-treated substrate (545.8 ± 12.59–804.7 ± 19.4 vs. 276.8 ± 10.1–312.7 ± 11.7 HV0.1). The pathogenicity of many bacteria, including Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus, depends on pore-forming toxins (PFTs), which cause the lysis of host cells by forming pores in the membranes of eukaryotic cells. Bioinformatic analysis revealed a region homologous to the Lys171-Gly250 sequence in hemolysin II (HlyII) from B. cereus in over 600 PFTs, which we designated as a "homologous peptide". Three β-barrel PFTs were used for a detailed comparative analysis. Two of them—HlyII and cytotoxin K2 (CytK2)—are synthesized in Bacillus cereus sensu lato; the third, S. aureus α-toxin (Hla), is the most investigated representative of the family. Protein modeling showed certain amino acids of the homologous peptide to be located on the surface of the monomeric forms of these β-barrel PFTs. We obtained monoclonal antibodies against both a cloned homologous peptide and a 14-membered synthetic peptide, DSFNTFYGNQLFMK, as part of the homologous peptide. The HlyII, CytK2, and Hla regions recognized by the obtained antibodies, as well as an antibody capable of suppressing the hemolytic activity of CytK2, were identified in the course of this work. When cultivating on wheat bran or deactivated fungal mycelium as a model of "natural growth", the ability of Trichoderma to synthesize extracellular L-lysine-α-oxidase (LysO) simultaneously with cell-wall-degrading enzymes (proteases, xylanase, glucanases, chitinases, etc.), responsible for mycoparasitism, was shown. LysO, in turn, causes the formation of H2O2 and pipecolic acid. These compounds are known to be signaling molecules and play an important role in the induction and development of systemic acquired resistance in plants. Antagonistic effects of LysO have been demonstrated against phytopathogenic fungi and Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria with dose-dependent cell death. The antimicrobial effect of LysO decreased in the presence of catalase. The generating intracellular ROS in the presence of LysO was also shown in both bacteria and fungi, which led to a decrease in viable cells. These results suggest that the antimicrobial activity of LysO is due to two factors: the formation of exogenous hydrogen peroxide as a product of the enzymatic oxidative deamination of L-lysine and the direct interaction of LysO with the cell wall of the micro-organisms. Thus, LysO on its own enhances the potential of the producer in the environment; namely, the enzyme complements the strategy of the fungus in biocontrol and indirectly participates in inducing SAR and regulating the relationship between pathogens and plants. 1H-Pyrrole-2,3-diones, fused at [e]-side with a heterocycle, are suitable platforms for the synthesis of various angular polycyclic alkaloid-like spiroheterocycles. Recently discovered sulfur-containing [e]-fused 1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones (aroylpyrrolobenzothiazinetriones) tend to exhibit unusual reactivity. Based on these peculiar representatives of [e]-fused 1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones, we have developed an approach to an unprecedented 6/5/5/5-tetracyclic alkaloid-like spiroheterocyclic system of benzo[d]pyrrolo[3′,4′:2,3]pyrrolo[2,1-b]thiazole via their reaction with Schiff bases and carbodiimides. The experimental results have been supplemented with DFT computational studies. In the realm of predictive toxicology for small molecules, the applicability domain of QSAR models is often limited by the coverage of the chemical space in the training set. Consequently, classical models fail to provide reliable predictions for wide classes of molecules. A complex study of the adhesion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes to a titanium surface, depending on the modes of irradiation with He+ ions of the "MWCNT/Ti" system, was conducted using atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A quantitative assessment of the adhesion force at the interface, performed using atomic force microscopy, demonstrated its significant increase as a result of treatment of the "MWCNT/Ti" system with a beam of helium ions. The nature of the chemical bonding between multi-walled carbon nanotubes and the surface of the titanium substrate, which causes this increase in the adhesion of nanotubes to titanium as a result of ion irradiation, was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was established that this bonding is the result of the formation of chemical C–O–Ti bonds between titanium and carbon atoms with the participation of oxygen atoms of oxygen-containing functional groups, which are localized on defects in the nanotube walls formed during ion irradiation. A new passivity-based voltage tracker for islanded Direct Current (DC) microgrids is presented in this paper. The proposed design develops a new sufficient condition for passivity-based state feedback with proportional and integral control using the attracting ellipsoid method. In this paper, we consider the time behavior of the extended vector, which completely describes the principle properties of the closed-loop system such as the boundedness of the trajectories within some ellipsoid and the dependence of its "size" on the feedback gains. The next step, which we are realizing in this paper, is the minimization of the attractive ellipsoid by selecting the "best" admissible feedback parameters. Here, it is important to note that the applied feedback is of PD-type (proportional differential) on the system state and I-type (integral) on the output. This is a new construction of the suggested feedback which gives several advantages for a designer. The suggested control is decentralized and uses only the local states; it is cost-effective and avoids the time delays in the communication networks which are needed if centralized control is used. The suggested control is carried out in the bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) framework. Extensive simulation is performed on a test system composed of renewable energy sources, under plug and play (PnP) operations, and uncertainties in distribution lines and loads. The performance of the proposed decentralized voltage controller is compared with that of a voltage tracker present in the literature. The comparison shows the improvements introduced by the proposed control ensure the stability of the dc bus voltage and a quick response under different scenarios of operating conditions. The synthesis and structural characterization of α-haloalkyl-substituted pyridinium-fused 1,2,4-selenadiazoles with various counterions is reported herein, demonstrating a strategy for directed supramolecular dimerization in the solid state. The compounds were obtained through a recently discovered 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between nitriles and bifunctional 2-pyridylselenyl reagents, and their structures were confirmed by the X-ray crystallography. α-Haloalkyl-substituted pyridinium-fused 1,2,4-selenadiazoles exclusively formed supramolecular dimers via four-center Se···N chalcogen bonding, supported by additional halogen bonding involving α-haloalkyl substituents. The introduction of halogens at the α-position of the substituent R in the selenadiazole core proved effective in promoting supramolecular dimerization, which was unaffected by variation of counterions. Additionally, the impact of cocrystallization with a classical halogen bond donor C6F3I3 on the supramolecular assembly was investigated. Non-covalent interactions were studied using density functional theory calculations and topological analysis of the electron density distribution, which indicated that all ChB, XB and HB interactions are purely non-covalent and attractive in nature. This study underscores the potential of halogen and chalcogen bonding in directing the self-assembly of functional supramolecular materials employing 1,2,4-selenadiazoles derived from recently discovered cycloaddition between nitriles and bifunctional 2-pyridylselenyl reagents. Easy-to-handle N-hydroxyacridinecarbimidoyl chloride hydrochlorides were synthesized as convenient nitrile oxide precursors in the preparation of 3-(acridin-9/2-yl)isoxazole derivatives via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with terminal alkynes, 1,1-dichloroethene, and acrylonitrile. Azirines with an acridin-9/2-yl substituent attached directly or via the 1,2,3-triazole linker to the azirine C2 were also synthesized. The three-membered rings of the acridine–azirine hybrids were found to be resistant to irradiation in the UV/visible boundary region, despite their long-wave absorption at 320–420 nm, indicating that the acridine moiety cannot be used as an antenna to transfer light energy to generate nitrile ylides from azirines for photoclick cycloaddition. The acridine–isoxazole hybrids linked at the C9–C3 or C2–C3 atoms under blue light irradiation underwent the addition of such hydrogen donor solvents, such as, toluene, o-xylene, mesitylene, 4-chlorotoluene, THF, 1,4-dioxane, or methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), to the acridine system to give the corresponding 9-substituted acridanes in good yields. In the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of discovered viruses that are transmitted by arthropods. Some of them are pathogenic for humans and mammals, and the pathogenic potential of others is unknown. The genus Orthoflavivirus belongs to the family Flaviviridae and includes arboviruses that cause severe human diseases with damage to the central nervous system and hemorrhagic fevers, as well as viruses with unknown vectors and viruses specific only to insects. The latter group includes Lammi virus, first isolated from a mosquito pool in Finland. It is known that Lammi virus successfully replicates in mosquito cell lines but not in mammalian cell cultures or mice. Lammi virus reduces the reproduction of West Nile virus during superinfection and thus has the potential to reduce the spread of West Nile virus in areas where Lammi virus is already circulating. In this work, we isolated Lammi virus from a pool of adult Aedes cinereus mosquitoes that hatched from larvae/pupae collected in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The origin and evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in our universe have sparked controversy. In this study, we explore the hypothesis that some of these black holes may have seeded from the direct collapse of dark energy domains with density significantly higher than the surrounding regions. The mechanism of the origin of such domains relies on the inflationary evolution of a scalar field acting in D dimensions, which is associated with the cosmological constant in our four-dimensional spacetime manifold. Inner space quantum fluctuations of the field during inflation are responsible for the spatial variations of the dark energy density in our space. This finding holds particular significance, especially considering recent evidence from pulsar timing array observations, which supports the existence of a stochastic gravitational wave background consisting of SMBH mergers. Capitellacin is the β-hairpin membrane-active cationic antimicrobial peptide from the marine polychaeta Capitella teleta. Capitellacin exhibits antibacterial activity, including against drug-resistant strains. To gain insight into the mechanism of capitellacin action, we investigated the structure of the peptide in the membrane-mimicking environment of dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles using high-resolution NMR spectroscopy. In DPC solution, two structural forms of capitellacin were observed: a monomeric β-hairpin was in equilibrium with a dimer formed by the antiparallel association of the N-terminal β-strands and stabilized by intermonomer hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals interactions. The thermodynamics of the enthalpy-driven dimerization process was studied by varying the temperature and molar ratios of the peptide to detergent. Cooling the peptide/detergent system promoted capitellacin dimerization. Paramagnetic relaxation enhancement induced by lipid-soluble 12-doxylstearate showed that monomeric and dimeric capitellacin interacted with the surface of the micelle and did not penetrate into the micelle interior, which is consistent with the "carpet" mode of membrane activity. An analysis of the known structures of β-hairpin AMP dimers showed that their dimerization in a membrane-like environment occurs through the association of polar or weakly hydrophobic surfaces. A comparative analysis of the physicochemical properties of β-hairpin AMPs revealed that dimer stability and hemolytic activity are positively correlated with surface hydrophobicity. An additional positive correlation was observed between hemolytic activity and AMP charge. The surface of ceramic products manufactured using diamond grinding is replete with shallow scratches, deep grooves and other defects. The thickness of the defective layer amounts to 3–4 µm and it must be removed to increase wear resistance of the products when exposed to intense thermomechanical loads. In this study, removal of the defective layers from samples made of ZrO2, Al2O3 and Si3N4 with a beam of fast argon atoms was carried out with a stripping rate of up to 5 µm/h. To prevent contamination of the source of fast argon atoms by the sputtered dielectric material, the beam was compressed and passed to the sample through a small hole in a wide screen. Due to the removal of the defective layer, abrasive wear decreased by an order of magnitude and the adhesion of coatings deposited on the cleaned ceramic surfaces improved significantly. The genetic engineering of plants often relies on the use of antibiotic or herbicide resistance genes for the initial selection of primary transgenic events. Nevertheless, the commercial release of genetically modified crops containing any marker gene encounters several challenges stemming from the lack of consumer acceptance. The development of strategies enabling the generation of marker-free transgenic plants presents an alternative to address public concerns regarding the safety of biotech crops. This study examined the capabilities of highly regenerative potato cultivars to develop transgenic plants without the presence of selective substances in their media. Internodal segments of in vitro potato plants were inoculated with the Agrobacterium strain AGL0 carrying plasmids, which contained the GFP or RFP gene driven by the CaMV 35S promoter to monitor the transformation process by observing in vivo green or red fluorescence. Despite the absence of selective pressure, inoculated explants demonstrated comparable or even higher transient expression compared to experiments based on antibiotic assistant selection. Consequently, under non-selective conditions, non-transgenic, chimeric, and fully fluorescent potato plantlets were concurrently developed. Among the five tested cultivars, the regeneration efficiency of non-chimeric transgenic plants varied from 0.9 ('Chicago') to 2.7 (#12-36-42) plants per 100 detached plantlets. Depending on the regenerative characteristics of potato varieties (early, intermediate, or late), a specific time interval can be determined when a blind collection of transgenic plantlets is more successful, streamlining the transformation procedure. The results indicate that the outlined procedure is simple and reproducible, consistently achieving the transformation efficiency of 7.3–12.0% (per 100 inoculated explants) in potato cultivars without selective pressure. Environmental pollution caused by plastic is a present problem. Polystyrene is a widely used packaging material (e.g., Styrofoam) that can be broken down into microplastics through abrasion. Once the plastic is released into the environment, it is dispersed by wind and atmospheric dust. In this study, we investigated the uptake of polystyrene particles into human cells using A549 cells as a model of the alveolar epithelial barrier, CaCo-2 cells as a model of the intestinal epithelial barrier, and THP-1 cells as a model of immune cells to simulate a possible uptake of microplastics by inhalation, oral uptake, and interaction with the cellular immune system, respectively. The uptake of fluorescence-labeled beads by the different cell types was investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy in a semi-quantitative, concentration-dependent manner. Additionally, we used Raman spectroscopy as a complementary method for label-free qualitative detection and the visualization of polystyrene within cells. The uptake of polystyrene beads by all investigated cell types was detected, while the uptake behavior of professional phagocytes (THP-1) differed from that of adherent epithelial cells. The gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining human health, as well as in the development of various pathologies, as indicated by a large amount of research. One of the manifestations of an imbalance in the gut microbiome composition is the appearance of various diseases or immune reactions, in particular, atopic dermatitis (AD) and/or food allergies (FA). In this research, using 16S NGS sequencing, it was found that the gut microbiome of children with food allergies and children with atopic dermatitis can be characterized as having higher inflammatory potential. Both groups exhibited an abundance of representatives from the Pasteurellaceae and Erysipelotrichaceae families, as well as a decrease in the relative number of representatives from the Barnesiellaceae family compared to healthy participants. In the group of participants with food allergies, there was a decrease in the relative number of Desulfovibrionaceae representatives and Bifidobacteriaceae family enrichment in relatively healthy participants. In addition, when comparing this group with patients with atopic dermatitis, it was revealed that a number of representatives of such families as Erysipelotrichaceae, Ruminococcaceae and Sutterellaceae prevailed. This information confirms that AD and FA correlate with changes in the composition of the gut microbiota. Further research is needed to determine the cause–effect connections and the effect of compounds derived from the microbiota on the AD and FA development and progression, as well as to create new probiotic drugs to prevent and modulate immune responses, including at an early age. We present a theoretical approach for the in silico generation of new polymer structures for the systematic search for new materials with advanced properties. It is based on Bicerano's Regression Model (RM), which uses the structure of the smallest repeating unit (SRU) for fast and adequate prediction of polymer properties. We have developed the programs (a) GenStruc, for generating the new polymer SRUs using the enumeration and Monte Carlo algorithms, and (b) PolyPred, for predicting properties for a given input polymer as well as for multiple structures stored in the database files. The structure database from the original Bicerano publication is used to create databases of backbones and pendant groups. A database of 5,142,153 unique SRUs is generated using the scaffold-based combinatorial method. We show that using only known backbones of the polymer SRU and varying the pendant groups can significantly improve the predicted extreme values of polymer properties. Analysis of the obtained results for the dielectric constant and refractive index shows that the values of the dielectric constant are higher for polyhydrazides than for polyhydroxylamines. The PEG-coated ferrite nanoparticles Co0.2Mn0.6Zn0.2Fe2O4 (X1), Co0.4Mn0.4Zn0.2Fe2O4 (X2), and Co0.6Mn0.2Zn0.2Fe2O4 (X3) were synthesized by the coprecipitation method. The nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, Raman, VSM, XPS, and TEM. The magnetic hyperthermia efficiency (MH) was determined for PEG-coated nanoparticles using an alternating magnetic field (AMF). X2 nanoparticles displayed the highest saturation magnetization and specific absorption rate (SAR) value of 245.2 W/g for 2 mg/mL in a water medium. Based on these properties, X2 nanoparticles were further evaluated for antiproliferative activity against HCT116 cells at an AMF of 495.25 kHz frequency and 350 G strength, using MTT, colony formation, wound healing assays, and flow cytometry analysis for determining the cell viability, clonogenic property, cell migration ability, and cell death of HCT116 cells upon AMF treatment in HCT116 cells, respectively. We observed a significant inhibition of cell viability (2% for untreated control vs. 50% for AMF), colony-forming ability (530 cells/colony for untreated control vs. 220 cells/colony for AMF), abrogation of cell migration (100% wound closure for untreated control vs. 5% wound closure for AMF), and induction of apoptosis-mediated cell death (7.5% for untreated control vs. 24.7% for AMF) of HCT116 cells with respect to untreated control cells after AMF treatment. Collectively, these results demonstrated that the PEG-coated (CoMnZn-Fe2O4) mixed ferrite nanoparticles upon treatment with AMF induced a significant antiproliferative effect on HCT116 cells compared with the untreated cells, indicating the promising antiproliferative potential of the Co0.4Mn0.4Zn0.2Fe2O4 nanoparticles for targeting colorectal cancer cells. Additionally, these results provide appealing evidence that ferrite-based nanoparticles using MH could act as potential anticancer agents and need further evaluation in preclinical models in future studies against colorectal and other cancers. The importance of biocatalysis for ecologically sustainable syntheses in the chemical industry and for applications in everyday life is increasing. To design efficient applications, it is important to know the related enzyme kinetics; however, the measurement is laborious and error-prone. Flow reactors are suitable for rapid reaction parameter screening; here, a novel workflow is proposed including digital image processing (DIP) for the quantification of product concentrations, and the use of structured data acquisition with EnzymeML spreadsheets combined with ontology-based semantic information, leading to rapid and smooth data integration into a simulation tool for kinetics evaluation. One of the major findings is that a flexibly adaptive ontology is essential for FAIR (findability, accessibility, interoperability, reusability) data handling. Lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) are major components of the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria. In this work, the structure of the O-polysaccharide of Ochrobactrum quorumnocens T1Kr02 was identified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and the physical–chemical properties and biological activity of LPS were also investigated. The NMR analysis showed that the O-polysaccharide has the following structure: →2)-β-d-Fucf-(1→3)-β-d-Fucp-(1→. The structure of the periplasmic glucan coextracted with LPS was established by NMR spectroscopy and chemical methods: →2)-β-d-Glcp-(1→. Non-stoichiometric modifications were identified in both polysaccharides: 50% of d-fucofuranose residues at position 3 were O-acetylated, and 15% of d-Glcp residues at position 6 were linked with succinate. This is the first report of a polysaccharide containing both d-fucopyranose and d-fucofuranose residues. The fatty acid analysis of the LPS showed the prevalence of 3-hydroxytetradecanoic, hexadecenoic, octadecenoic, lactobacillic, and 27-hydroxyoctacosanoic acids. The dynamic light scattering demonstrated that LPS (in an aqueous solution) formed supramolecular particles with a size of 72.2 nm and a zeta-potential of –21.5 mV. The LPS solution (10 mkg/mL) promoted the growth of potato microplants under in vitro conditions. Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a neurotoxic molecule used by many animals for defense and/or predation, as well as an important biomedical tool. Its ubiquity as a defensive agent has led to repeated independent evolution of tetrodotoxin resistance in animals. TTX binds to voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSC) consisting of α and β subunits. Virtually all studies investigating the mechanisms behind TTX resistance have focused on the α subunit of voltage-gated sodium channels, where tetrodotoxin binds. However, the possibility of β subunits also contributing to tetrodotoxin resistance was never explored, though these subunits act in concert. In this study, we present preliminary evidence suggesting a potential role of β subunits in the evolution of TTX resistance. We gathered mRNA sequences for all β subunit types found in vertebrates across 12 species (three TTX-resistant and nine TTX-sensitive) and tested for signatures of positive selection with a maximum likelihood approach. Our results revealed several sites experiencing positive selection in TTX-resistant taxa, though none were exclusive to those species in subunit β1, which forms a complex with the main physiological target of TTX (VGSC Nav1.4). While experimental data validating these findings would be necessary, this work suggests that deeper investigation into β subunits as potential players in tetrodotoxin resistance may be worthwhile. The fast, convenient, and accurate determination of railroad cars' load mass is critical to ensure safety and allow asset counting in railway infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a method for modeling the mechanical deformations that occur in the rail web under the influence of a static load transmitted through a railway wheel. According to the proposed method, a railroad car's weight can be determined from the rail deformation values. A solid model of a track section, including a railroad tie, rail, and wheel, is developed, and a multi-physics simulation technique that allows for the determination of the values of deformations and mechanical stresses in the strain gauge installation areas is presented. The influence of the loaded mass, the temperature of the rail, and the wheel position relative to the strain gauge location is considered. We also consider the possibility of using artificial neural networks to determine railroad cars' weight without specifying the coordinates of the wheel position. Currently, electrically conductive polymers based on transition metal complexes [M(Salen)], as well as their composites, are among the systems showing promise as catalysts, electrochromic and electroluminescent materials, and electrodes for energy storage (for batteries and supercapacitors). The current review focuses on elucidating the atomic and electronic structure of metal–salen complexes, their polymers, and composites with nanostructured carbon (carbon nanotubes and graphene) using modern X-ray spectroscopy methods (X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and valence-band photoemission (VB PES) spectroscopy, as well as near-edge (NEXAFS) and extended (EXAFS) X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy). We trust that this review will be of valuable assistance to researchers working in the field of synthesizing and characterizing metal–salen complexes and composites based on them. The sustained rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) causes a strong need to develop new antibacterial agents. One of the methods for addressing the problem of antibiotic resistance is through the design of hybrid antibiotics. In this work, we proposed a synthetic route for the conjugation of an azithromycin derivative with chloramphenicol and metronidazole hemisuccinates and synthesized two series of new hybrid molecules 4a–g and 5a–g. While a conjugation did not result in tangible synergy for wild-type bacterial strains, new compounds were able to overcome AMR associated with the inducible expression of the ermC gene on a model E. coli strain resistant to macrolide antibiotics. The newly developed hybrids demonstrated a tendency to induce premature ribosome stalling, which might be crucial since they will not induce a macrolide-resistant phenotype in a number of pathogenic bacterial strains. In summary, the designed structures are considered as a promising direction for the further development of hybrid molecules that can effectively circumvent AMR mechanisms to macrolide antibiotics.
