Despite efforts to mitigate climate change, annual greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, which may lead to the global warming of our planet. Buildings' thermal energy needs are inherently linked to climate conditions. Consequently, it is crucial to evaluate how climate change affects these energy demands. Despite extensive analysis, a comprehensive assessment involving a diverse range of building types has not been consistently conducted. The primary objective of this research is to perform a coherent evaluation of the influence of climate changes, construction element properties, and the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system type of control on the energy requirements of six buildings (residential, services, and commercial). The buildings are considered to be located in a temperate Mediterranean climate. Our focus is on the year 2070, considering three distinct climatic scenarios: (i) maintaining the current climate without further changes, (ii) moderate climate changes, and (iii) extreme climate changes. The buildings are distributed across three different locations, each characterized by unique climatic conditions. Buildings' envelope features a traditional External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) serves as thermal insulation material. Two critical design factors are explored: EPS thickness ranging from 0 (no insulation) to 12 cm; and horizontal external fixed shading elements varying lengths from 0 (absence) to 150 cm. Six alternative setpoint ranges are assessed for the HVAC system control: three based on the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and three based on indoor air temperature (Tair). Results were obtained with a validated in-home software tool. They show that, even under extreme climate conditions, the application of thermal insulation remains energetically favorable; however, its relative importance diminishes as climate severity increases. Then, proper insulation design remains important for energy efficiency. The use of external shading elements for glazing (e.g., overhangs, louvers) proves beneficial in specific cases. As climate changes intensify, the significance of shading elements grows. Thus, strategic placement and design are necessary for good results. The HVAC system's energy consumption depends on the level of thermal comfort requirements, on the climate characteristics, and on the building's type of use. As climate change severity intensifies, energy demands for cooling increase, whereas energy needs for heating decrease. With half-cut photovoltaic (PV) modules being the dominant technology on the market, there is an increasing necessity for accurate modeling of this module type. Circuit simulators such as Simulink are widely used to study different topics regarding photovoltaics, often employing a solar cell block available from the Simcape library. The purpose of this work is to validate this model against measurements for a partially shaded half-cut PV module. Diverse shading scenarios are created by varying the number of shaded substrings, the number of shaded solar cells in the substring, and the shading level. For every shading scenario, the PV module's I-V curve is measured, along with in-plane irradiance, air temperature, and module temperature. A comprehensive evaluation of simulation accuracy is presented. The results confirm a high accuracy of the model with mean nRMSE values of 2.2% for I-V curves and 2.8% when P-V curves are considered. It is found that the simulation errors tend to increase when increasing the number of shaded substrings. In this study, we develop an Atmospheric Motion Vector (AMV)-based method for retrieving wind vectors using 183.31 GHz water-vapor absorption channels. The method involves tracking water-vapor features from image triplets and subsequently deriving wind fields from motion vectors. The height of the derived wind for each channel is determined by calculating the weighing function peak using monthly averaged ERA5 reanalysis data. By utilizing Microwave Humidity Sounder-II (MWHS-II) brightness temperatures from the five channels centered around 183.31 GHz, wind vectors are retrieved within the Arctic region for the entire year of 2022. The retrieval quality is evaluated through comparative analysis with ERA5 reanalysis data and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) wind product. The resultant vector root mean square errors (RMSEs) are approximately 4.5 m/s for the three lower-height channels and 5.5 m/s for the two upper-height channels. These findings demonstrate a wind retrieval performance comparable to the existing methods, highlighting its potential for augmenting wind availability at lower height levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lakes on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau (QTP) are widely distributed spatially, and they are mostly seasonally frozen. Due to global warming, the thickness and phenology of the lake ice has been changing, which profoundly affects the regional climate evolution. There are a few studies about lake ice in alpine regions, but the understanding of climatological characteristics of lake ice on the QTP is still limited. Based on a field experiment in the winter of 2022, the thermal conductivity of Qinghai Lake ice was determined as 1.64 W·m−1·°C−1. Airborne radar ice thickness data, meteorological observations, and remote sensing images were used to evaluate a quasi-steady ice model (Leppäranta model) performance of the lake. This is an analytic model of lake ice thickness and phenology. The long-term (1979–2017) ice history of the lake was simulated. The results showed that the modeled mean ice thickness was 0.35 m with a trend of −0.002 m·a−1, and the average freeze-up start (FUS) and break-up end (BUE) were 30 December and 5 April, respectively, which are close to the field and satellite observations. The simulated trend of the maximum ice thickness from 1979 to 2017 (0.004 m·a−1) was slightly higher than the observed result (0.003 m·a−1). The simulated trend was 0.20 d·a−1 for the FUS, −0.34 d·a−1 for the BUE, and −0.54 d·a−1 for the ice duration (ID). Correlation and detrending analysis were adopted for the contribution of meteorological factors. In the winters of 1979–2017, downward longwave radiation and air temperature were the two main factors that had the best correlation with lake ice thickness. In a detrending analysis, air temperature, downward longwave radiation, and solar radiation contributed the most to the average thickness variability, with contributions of 42%, 49%, and −48%, respectively, and to the maximum thickness variability, with contributions of 41%, 45%, and −48%, respectively. If the six meteorological factors (air temperature, downward longwave radiation, solar radiation, wind speed, pressure, and specific humidity) are detrending, ice thickness variability will increase 83% on average and 87% at maximum. Specific humidity, wind, and air pressure had a poor correlation with ice thickness. The findings in this study give insights into the long-term evolutionary trajectory of Qinghai Lake ice cover and serve as a point of reference for investigating other lakes in the QTP during cold seasons. The purpose of this first article is to provide a physical basis for atmospheric Rossby waves at the tropopause to clarify their properties and improve our knowledge of their role in the genesis of extreme precipitation and heat waves. By analogy with the oceanic Rossby waves, the role played by the pycnocline in ocean Rossby waves is replaced here by the interface between the polar jet and the ascending air column at the meeting of the polar and Ferrel cell circulation or between the subtropical jet and the descending air column at the meeting of the Ferrel and Hadley cell circulation. In both cases, the Rossby waves are suitable for being resonantly forced in harmonic modes by tuning their natural period to the forcing period. Here, the forcing period is one year as a result of the variation in insolation due to solar declination. A search for cause-and-effect relationships is performed from the joint representation of the amplitude and phase of (1) the velocity of the cold or warm modulated airflows at 250 mb resulting from Rossby waves, (2) the geopotential height at 500 mb, and (3) the precipitation rate or ground air temperature. This is for the dominant harmonic mode whose period can be 1/16, 1/32, or 1/64 year, which reflects the intra-seasonal variations in the rising and falling air columns at the meeting of the polar, Ferrel, and Hadley cell circulation. Harmonics determine the duration of blocking. Two case studies referring to extreme cold and heat waves are presented. Dual cyclone–anticyclone systems seem to favor extreme events. They are formed by two joint vortices of opposite signs reversing over a period, concomitantly with the involved modulated airflows at the tropopause. A second article will be oriented toward (1) the examination of different case studies in order to ascertain the common characteristics of Rossby wave patterns leading to extreme events and (2) a map of the globe revealing future trends in the occurrence of extreme events. With increased atmospheric temperature, temperatures in the shade of trees in parks also increase, and people are faced with high temperature challenges. In this study, thermal comfort in the shade of the trees of an urban park during summer in China was assessed. The subjective responses of the respondents were recorded via questionnaires, and environment parameters were measured. The results show that the air temperature in the shade was 31.1 ± 3.0 °C during the day, and that it peaked at 36.9 °C; the globe temperature was 31.3 ± 3.1 °C, and it peaked at 40.1 ℃. Respondents' clothing insulation was 0.31 ± 0.08 clo, and the effect of clothing adjustment on thermal adaptation was limited. Thermal sensation is linearly related to standard effective temperature (SET), and the upper limit of 80% acceptable SET was 32.1 °C. At different temperature values, the proportion of expected airflow enhancement exceeded 50%. The respondents preferred a neutral-warm sensation. Moreover, there was an obvious thermal adaptation, with thermal history and psychological adaptation being the main factors affecting thermal comfort. An accurate simulation and projection of future warming are needed for a proper policy response to expected climate change. We examine the simulations of the mean global and Arctic surface air temperatures by the CMIP6 (Climate Models Intercomparison Project phase 6) climate models. Most models overestimate the observed mean global warming. Only seven out of 19 models considered simulate global warming that is within ±15% of the observed warming between the average of the 2014–2023 and 1961–1990 reference period. Ten models overestimate global warming by more than 15% and only one of the models underestimates it by more than 15%. Arctic warming is simulated by the CMIP6 climate models much better than the mean global warming. The reason is an equal spread of over and underestimates of Arctic warming by the models, while most of the models overestimate the mean global warming. This study aimed to examine the spatio-temporal variations in the atmospheric boundary layer height (ABLH) over the Tarim Basin (TB). Monthly ABLH data from the ERA-Interim dataset from January 1979 to December 2018 were used. Periodicity analysis and the Mann–Kendall Abrupt Changes test were employed to identify the change cycle and abrupt change year of the boundary layer height. The Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method was utilized to determine the spatial distribution of the boundary layer height, and the RF method was used to establish the relationship between the ABLH and influencing factors. The results demonstrated that the highest values of ABLH (over 1900 m) were observed in the middle parts of the study area in June, and the ABLH exhibited a significant increase over the TB throughout the study period. Abrupt changes in the ABLH were also identified in 2004, as well as in 2-, 5-, 9-, and 15-year changing cycles. The first EOF ABLH mode indicated that the middle and northeast regions are relatively high ABLH areas within the study area. Additionally, the monthly variations in ABLH show a moderately positive correlation with air temperature, while exhibiting a negative correlation with air pressure and relative humidity. The combined heating method of seat heating and air conditioning (A/C) was applied in the passenger compartment under different experiment conditions, using thermocouples to continuously measure the wall surfaces and air temperatures in the passenger compartment and the passengers' skin temperatures of 17 segments. Meanwhile, a subjective evaluation questionnaire survey was conducted using a nine-point evaluation scale on the local and overall thermal sensation and thermal comfort of the passengers, and the data from the questionnaire were analyzed with the ANOVA method. The results showed that the use of the heating pad directly affected the changes in human skin temperature, which in turn affected the local and overall thermal sensation and thermal comfort. For the two thermally stimulated segments of the back and under the thighs, the skin temperature of the back was higher than that of the thighs. Using the heating pad resulted in a rapid increase in the mean skin temperature in the early period of the experiment. Thermal sensation of the back and under-thighs shifted rapidly towards the hot zone in the first 10 min, and then settled around +3, with even more significant differences between the groups. Thermal sensations in non-thermally stimulated segments changed in relation to their position on the heating pad, with slower changes in those at the "distal" end of the body, the head and the feet. Continued use of the heating pads at lower ambient temperatures maintained overall thermal comfort at a neutral level in the range of 0–1, whereas at higher ambient temperatures there was a gradual deterioration of local and overall thermal comfort. The intermittency of gravity wave potential energy (GWPE) in the upper troposphere and stratosphere was investigated using the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate-2 (COSMIC-2) temperature data over three typical mountains (Tibetan Plateau, Rocky Mountains, and Andes). These typical mountains have high sea level elevations but different land–sea contrast. The probability density function (PDF) of GWPE has the independent variable of GWPE and dependent variable of occurrence probability of GWPE over a region. Our analysis showed that the PDFs of GWPE over these three mountains roughly followed lognormal distributions in all heights and months. But, the key parameters (mean value and standard deviation) of lognormal distribution varied with heights and months. Above each mountain, the two key parameters exhibited similar temporal and spatial distributions. They had the largest values around the tropopause region, smaller values in the lower stratosphere (~20–30 km), and larger values in the upper stratosphere (~35–45 km). The intermittency of GWs is represented as the ratio of the GWPE at 50th percentile to the GWPE at 90th percentile. The weakest intermittency was at ~20–30 km (above the zonal mean winds of zero) over the Tibetan Plateau and Rocky Mountains in all months and over the Andes from November to March, respectively. Generally, the weakest intermittency (~0.4) occurred in the region where the key parameters were the smallest around summer. The key parameters of lognormal distribution were dominated by annual variation over the Andes throughout the height range, 8–50 km. However, the semiannual variations are also significant in the lower stratosphere over the Tibetan Plateau and Rocky Mountains. The seasonal variations in the intermittency were not as obvious as those of the key parameters. This study addresses a crucial gap in understanding the impact of urban morphologies on the canopy urban heat islands (CUHI) effect. The selection of reference stations lacks a unified standard, and their surface air temperature (SAT) sequences are also inevitably influenced by urbanization. However, synchronous observational data from relocated meteorological stations could provide high-quality sample data for studying CUHI. Utilizing remote sensing techniques, the findings of this paper revealed that the observation environment of stations after relocation exhibited remarkable representativeness, with their observation sequences accurately reflecting the local climatic background. The differences in synchronized observation sequences could characterize the CUHI intensity (CUHII). Among the various factors, land use parameters and landscape parameters played particularly significant roles. Furthermore, the fitting performance of the random forest (RF) model for both training and testing data was significantly superior to that of the linear model and support vector regression (SVR) model. Additionally, the influence of local circulation on CUHI could not be overlooked. Near-surface air temperature (Ta) is a key variable in global climate studies. Global climate models such as ERA5 and CMIP6 predict various parameters at coarse spatial resolution (>9 km). As a result, local phenomena such as the urban heat islands are not reflected in the model's outputs. In this study, we address this limitation by downscaling the resolution of ERA5 (9 km) and CMIP6 (27 km) Ta to 1 km, employing two different machine learning algorithms (XGBoost and Deep Learning). Our models leverage a diverse set of features, including data from satellites (land surface temperature and normalized difference vegetation index), from ERA5 and CMIP6 climate models (e.g., solar and thermal radiation, wind), and from digital elevation models to develop accurate machine learning prediction models. These models were rigorously validated against observations from 98 meteorological stations in the East Mediterranean (Israel) using a standard cross-validation technique as well as a leave-one-group-out on the station ID evaluation methodology to avoid overfitting and dependence on geographic location. We demonstrate the sensitivity of the downscaled Ta to local land cover and topography, which is missing in the climate models. Our results demonstrate impressive accuracy with the Deep Learning-based models, obtaining Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) values of 0.98 °C (ERA5) and 1.86 °C (CMIP6) for daily Ta and 2.20 °C (ERA5) for hourly Ta. Additionally, we explore the impact of the various input features and offer an extended application for future climate predictions. Finally, we propose an enhanced evaluation framework, which addresses the problem of model overfitting. Studying atmospheric temperature characteristics is crucial under climate change, as it helps us to understand the changing patterns in temperature that have significant implications for the environment, ecosystems, and human well-being. This study presents the comprehensive analysis of the spatiotemporal variability of scaling behavior of daily temperature series across the whole Indian mainland, using a Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MFDFA). The analysis considered 1° × 1° datasets of maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), mean temperature (Tmean), and diurnal temperature range (DTR) (TDTR = Tmax − Tmin) from 1951 to 2016 to compare their scaling behavior for the first time. Our results indicate that the Tmin series exhibits the highest persistence (with the Hurst exponent ranging from 0.849 to unity, and a mean of 0.971), and all four-temperature series display long-term persistence and multifractal characteristics. The variability of the multifractal characteristics is less significant in North–Central India, while it is highest along the western coast of India. Moreover, the assessment of multifractal characteristics of different temperature series during the pre- and post-1976–1977 period of the Pacific climate shift reveals a notable decrease in multifractal strength and persistence in the post-1976–1977 series across all regions. Moreover, for the detection of climate change and its dominant driver, we propose a new rolling window multifractal (RWM) framework by evaluating the temporal evolution of the spectral exponents and the Hurst exponent. This study successfully captured the regime shifts during the periods of 1976–1977 and 1997–1998. Interestingly, the earlier climatic shift primarily mitigated the persistence of the Tmax series, whereas the latter shift significantly influenced the persistence of the Tmean series in the majority of temperature-homogeneous regions in India. The changing global climate, characterized by rising surface air temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and heightened occurrences of extreme weather events, is anticipated to profoundly impact the environment, economy, and society worldwide. This impact is particularly acute in African nations like Angola, where crucial sectors, such as agriculture, rely heavily on climate variability and exhibit limited adaptive capacity. Given that the majority of Angola's agriculture is rain-fed and serves as a vital source of livelihood for the populace, the country is especially vulnerable to climate change, particularly in its southern region. Climate change has caused severe damage in Angola, especially in the southern part of the country, where the worst droughts in decades have affected over 3.81 million people, resulting in food and water shortages. Between 2005 and 2017, climate-related disasters cost the country about 1.2 billion US dollars, further exacerbating the economic and social challenges faced by the population. This study presents a systematic review of the effects of climate change on agriculture in Angola, with a focus on the southern region. Employing the PRISMA2020 methodology, the review examined 431 documents from databases such as Scopus and Web Science, spanning from 1996 to 2023, with 63 meeting inclusion criteria. The review reveals a paucity of research on the short and long-term impacts of climate change on Angolan agriculture. Projections indicate a rise in temperatures and a general decrease in precipitation, with the southern region experiencing a more pronounced decline. In this study, the radiation scheme BCC-RAD (Beijing Climate Center RADiative transfer model) developed for global climate models is implemented into the Global–Regional Integrated SysTem (GRIST) model as an alternative to the default RRTMG (general circulation model (GCM) version of the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model) scheme. Its impact on the simulated climate is comprehensively evaluated under different physics parametrization packages, in comparison with both the CERES (partly from ERA5 reanalysis) observations and multi-model results from CMIP6. The results indicate that under the default physics parameterization package of GRIST (PhysC), BCC-RAD improved the simulated global mean cloud cover by ~3% and the clear-sky outgoing longwave radiation by ~5.6 W/m2. Upon the inclusion of the PhysCN parameterization package, BCC-RAD exhibited further improvement in simulated cloud cover and radiative forcing (particularly longwave radiative forcing, the bias of which decreases from −9.2 W/m2 to −1.8 W/m2), leading it to be closer to observations than RRTMG. Additionally, BCC-RAD improved the simulation of atmospheric temperature and hence notably diminished the apparent overestimation of atmospheric humidity seen in RRTMG. This study demonstrates the advantages of BCC-RAD over RRTMG in certain aspects of the GRIST-simulated climate, verifying its capability for the climate-oriented configuration of GRIST. Recent climatic changes, most evident in air temperature, also significantly impact sensible conditions, particularly affecting the human body during the summer season in urban areas. This study utilized hourly values of air temperature (t, °C) and relative humidity (RH, %) for 2008–2022 obtained from nine measurement points located in the city of Poznań. The measurement network was set up and supported by the Department of Meteorology and Climatology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Based on these data, thermal conditions were characterized using the Humidex (HD), as well as "hot days" (Tmax > 30 °C) and heat waves determined based on them. The conducted research revealed variability in thermal conditions across the city. The highest average Tmax (27.4 °C) and HD values (31.3 °C), as well as the greatest average number of hot days (15 days), were recorded in the compact, dense city center. In contrast, the lowest values (respectively: 25.9 °C, 27.5 °C, 8 days) were observed in areas with a significantly greater proportion of green spaces located further from the center. Furthermore, significant trends of change were observed: an annual average Tmax increase of 1.2–1.6 °C/decade and HD values showing an increase of 1.5–3.0 °C/decade. This study also highlighted the noteworthy impact of urbanization and the presence of urban greenery on the frequency and total duration of heat waves. Between 2008 and 2022, the area of compact development experienced 26 heat waves lasting a total of 115 days, whereas the area with a high proportion of greenery recorded 14 cases and 55 days, respectively. The longest recorded heat wave, spanning 9 days, occurred in July 2010. Greece and the surrounding areas experienced an early warm spell with characteristics of a typical summer Mediterranean heatwave in mid-May 2020. The maximum 2 m temperature at Kalamata (southern Greece) reached 40 °C on 16 May and at Aydin (Turkey), it was 42.6 °C on 17 May. There was a 10-standard deviation positive temperature anomaly (relative to the 1975–2005 climatology) at 850 hPa, with a southwesterly flow and warm advection over Greece and western Turkey from 11 to 20 May. At 500 hPa, a ridge was located over the Eastern Mediterranean, resulting in subsidence. The aims of this study were (a) to investigate the prevailing synoptic conditions during this event in order to document its occurrence and (b) to assess whether this out-of-season heatwave was predictable on subseasonal timescales. The subseasonal predictability is not a well-researched scientific topic in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The ensemble global forecasts from six international meteorological centres (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts—ECMWF, United Kingdom Met Office—UKMO, China Meteorological Administration—CMA, Korea Meteorological Administration—KMA, National Centers for Environmental Prediction—NCEP and Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia—HMCR) and limited area forecasts using the Weather Research and Forecasting model with the Advanced Research dynamic solver (WRF) forced by Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv.2; NCEP) forecasts were evaluated for lead times ranging from two to six weeks using statistical scores. WRF was integrated using two telescoping nests covering Europe, the Mediterranean basin and large part of the Atlantic Ocean, with a grid spacing of 25 km, and Greece–western Turkey at 5 km. The results showed that there were some accurate forecasts initiated two weeks before the event's onset. There was no systematic benefit from the increase of the WRF model's resolution from 25 km to 5 km for forecasting the 850 hPa temperature, but regarding the prediction of maximum air temperature near the surface, the high resolution (5 km) nest of WRF produced a marginally better performance than the coarser resolution domain (25 km). The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), the source of many major Asian rivers, is sensitive to climate change, affecting billions of people's livelihoods across Asia. Here, we developed high-resolution projections of precipitation and daily maximum/minimum temperatures at 0.1° spatial resolution over the QTP. The projections are based on the output from seven global climate models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) for historical (1979–2013) and projected (2015–2100) climates across four scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). An updated nonstationary cumulative distribution function matching method (called CNCDFm) was used to remove model systemic bias. We verify the necessity of taking into account altitude in downscaling processes and the validity of nonstationary bias correction. Compared to the historical period, the climate in the QTP in the 21st century is warmer (1.2–5.1 °C, for maximum surface temperature) and wetter (3.9–26.8%) according to the corrected GCM projection. For precipitation, the Indus River (IDR), Tarim River (TMR), Inner of Qiangtang Basin (IQTB), Yarlung Zangbo (YLZBR), and Qaidam Basin (QDB) showed growth well above the global average across high radiative forcing scenarios, which could have a profound impact on the regional hydrological cycle. However, there is great uncertainty in precipitation prediction, which is demonstrated by a very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a large difference between Bayesian model averaging (BMA) and multi-model averages (MMAs). Temperature analysis is of special interest in polar areas because temperature is an essential variable in the energy exchange between the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Although land surface temperature (LST) obtained using satellites and air temperature (Ta) have different physical meanings and are measured with different techniques, LST has often been successfully employed to estimate Ta. For this reason, in this work, we estimated Ta from LST MODIS collection 6 (C6) and used other predictor variables. Daily mean Ta was calculated from Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) stations data on the Livingston and Deception Islands, and from the PERMASNOW project stations on Livingston Island; both islands being part of the South Shetland Islands (SSI) archipelago. In relation to our previous work carried out in the study area with collection 5 (C5) data, we obtained higher R2 values (R2CV = 0.8, in the unique model with Terra daytime data) and lower errors (RMSECV = 2.2 °C, MAECV = 1.6 °C). We corroborated significant improvements in MODIS C6 LST data. We analyzed emissivity as a possible factor of discrepancies between C5 and C6, but we did not find conclusive results, therefore we could not affirm that emissivity is the factor that causes differences between one collection and another. The results obtained with the applied filters indicated that MODIS data can be used to study Ta in the area, as these filters contribute to the reduction of uncertainties in the modeling of Ta from satellites. The higher the atmosphere is, the larger the deviations in atmospheric temperature and humidity are between the vertical column atmosphere above the cross-section of a satellite instrument and a ray's trajectory from the cross-section to the satellite. In general, satellite instruments that observe using cross-orbit scanning result in the difference between the observed radiance and the simulations using this method becoming incrementally larger and larger as the cross-section moves to the edge of the satellite's orbit. The deviations depend on the distance from the column to the ray trajectory and on the horizontal gradient of variables in the distance. In fact, the horizontal gradient of water vapour is larger than the gradient of temperature in clear scenarios, which could introduce an impact of temperature and water vapour on the simulated radiance of a satellite. In this study, a new method to simulate upgoing and downgoing radiation synchronously was developed, using the observing path tracking method. The conventional vertical initial atmospheric profile (Exp.1) and the profiles along the upgoing and downgoing rays of the satellite's observation (Exp.2) were established, in order to simulate the observed radiance of MWHS-II of FY-3D using global numerical forecasts with resolutions of 15 km and 25 km. The results showed that, for channels in the oxygen and water vapour absorption line on the microwave spectrum, deviations of the two atmospheric profiles were larger at the scan edge (0.01 K) than those at the nadir (0.001 K), and were larger in the upper atmosphere than in the lower atmosphere. The deviation was usually negative in low-latitude regions and was positive in southern high-latitude regions. Such results were obtained in experiments using both the numerical forecast method with 15 km grids and the forecast method with 25 km grids. Deviations were analysed for representative channels at 118 GHz and 183 GHz. Then, the results indicated that bigger deviations between the two experiments were observed in the water vapour absorption line than in the oxygen absorption line in the microwave spectrum. In conclusion, this indicates that, because of the greater horizontal gradient of water vapour, the stronger localisation of water vapour makes the atmospheric profile along the satellite's observing ray have more increments in the simulated radiance at the scan edge, compared to the atmospheric column profile. The aim of this study was to obtain a series of activated carbon samples by the chemical activation of low-rank coal. The precursor was impregnated with a NaOH solution. Activated carbons were characterized by determining their textural parameters and content of surface oxygen functional groups and by using an elemental analysis. The carbons were tested as potential adsorbents for the removal of liquid pollutants represented by rhodamine B. The effectiveness of rhodamine B removal from water solutions depended on the initial concentration of the dye, the mass of rhodamine B, and the pH and temperature of the reaction. The isotherm examination followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the rhodamine B was 119 mg/g. The kinetic investigation favored the pseudo-second-order model, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. The thermodynamic assessment indicated spontaneous and endothermic adsorption, with decreased randomness at the solid–liquid interface. This research was carried out to compare selected forecasting methods, such as the following: Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Classification and Regression Trees (CARTs), Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID), Fuzzy Logic Toolbox (FUZZY), Multivariant Adaptive Regression Splines (MARSs), Regression Trees (RTs), Rough Set Theory (RST), and Support Regression Trees (SRTs), in the context of determining the temperature of brine from vertical ground heat exchangers used by a heat pump heating system. The subject of the analysis was a public building located in Poland, in a temperate continental climate zone. The results of this study indicate that the models based on Rough Set Theory (RST) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) achieved the highest accuracy in predicting brine temperature, with the choice of the preferred method depending on the input variables used for modeling. Using three independent variables (mean outdoor air temperature, month of the heating season, mean solar irradiance), Rough Set Theory (RST) was one of the best models, for which the evaluation rates were as follows: CV RMSE 21.6%, MAE 0.3 °C, MAPE 14.3%, MBE 3.1%, and R2 0.96. By including an additional variable (brine flow rate), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) achieved the most accurate predictions. The Biospeleological Station (BS) in Postojna Cave, with a volume of 36,000 m3, has served as an underground biological laboratory since 1931, receiving 100,000 visitors annually. Historical cave micro-climate monitoring was performed in 1933 and 1963, and continuous monitoring of cave air temperature and carbon dioxide concentration at hourly intervals started in 2015. Micro-climatic data collected between 2015 and 2024 has helped us to understand the relationship between natural underground environment and anthropogenic impact, thereby aiding expert recommendations to cave managers for the mitigation of anthropogenic micro-climatic effects. Results strongly support the policy that, during summer, when outdoor temperatures are higher than in the cave, solid metal doors connecting the BS with the rest of the cave (Stara Jama) should be kept open. Such a simple mitigation act helps to decrease anthropogenically increased air temperature and carbon dioxide concentrations, thereby maintaining suitable micro-climatic conditions for the exhibition of cave animals. Closure during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021) resulted in the lowest temperatures recorded. The aim of this study was to compare the physical, chemical, and microbiological features of bio-yoghurt that had been air-oven-dried at three temperatures (40, 50, and 60 °C) to those of fresh bio-yoghurt. The results showed that drying bio-yoghurt at 40–60 °C decreased the number of probiotic starter bacteria in dried yoghurt products compared to fresh bio-yoghurt. The dried yoghurt's moisture, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and ash contents were 4.16–4.55%, 38.22–40.02%, 1.33–1.43%, 47.94–49.45%, and 6.37–6.55%, respectively. The pH and total acidity levels of dried yoghurt were within acceptable ranges at various temperatures and storage durations. At different temperatures, the viscosity values of the products decreased by 620–550 cp; however, the hygroscopicity values remained constant. During a 90-day storage period, the dried yoghurt product's physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics remained within acceptable levels. Using a drying temperature of 40–50 °C kept the number of live bacteria below acceptable ranges during storage periods. Lactobacillus acidophilus counts were 6.75 and 6.70 log CFU/g, respectively, whereas Bifidobacterium bifidum numbers were 6.66 and 6.08 log CFU/g, respectively. In conclusion, drying bio-yoghurt in an air oven at 40–50 °C provided a dried product with a high number of viable probiotic bacteria and satisfactory physicochemical characteristics after 3 months. This study aims (1) to study the trend and characteristics of average annual air temperature (Tann), annual precipitation (Prann), and annual evapotranspiration (PETann) in Thailand over the present period (1987–2021) and (2) to extract the climate pattern in form of a map using the New Thornthwaite Climate Classification method in Thailand considering the present period. The data were prepared by the Thai Meteorological Department. Data variability, the mean of the data calculation in time series, the homogeneity test of data, and abrupt changes were examined. The trends of each variable were calculated using the Mann–Kendal and Sen's slope test. The results indicated that the high Tann found in Bangkok gradually decreased in the next area. Tann data were heterogeneous with the abrupt change period, and increasing trends were found. Prann values were high in the west side of the southern area and the bottom area of the eastern area; in addition, low rainfall was found in the inner area of the land. Prann data were homogenous with no abrupt change period and slight changes in trends. PETann and %CV spatial distribution were determined for the same pattern of Tann. PETann data were heterogeneous with abrupt change periods and rising trends. The torrid thermal index determined based on the New Thornthwaite Climate Classification results indicated an overall torrid-type climate. A semi-arid climate pattern was found in the small area of the middle of Thailand, and then it shifted toward a moist-type pattern in the next area with an in precipitation. An extreme high-temperature event occurred in North China on 22 June 2023, with the maximum temperature reaching 41.8 °C. The high-temperature centers preferentially occurred at the foothills of the Taihang and Yanshan Mountains, indicating an important role of the underlying orography. In the present work, we study the orographic effects of this extreme high-temperature event according to high-resolution numerical simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. The results show that the presence of the mountains in North China contributed notably to the high-temperature event, which can enhance the 2 m air temperature by up to 3 °C. In the daytime, the enhancement of temperature is primarily due to the diabatic heating of sensible heat flux at the terrain surface caused by solar shortwave radiation, whereas the well-known foehn effect has little contribution. Indeed, the dynamically forced downslope flow of foehn is totally suppressed by the upslope flow of the thermally driven mountain-plain circulation. In the nighttime, the sensible heat flux at the terrain surface changes to weakly negative, given the cooling of land surface longwave radiation. As a result, the enhancement of near-surface temperature at the terrain foothill is dominated by the adiabatic warming of downslope flow. Yet, the near-surface temperature far away from the mountain is enhanced by the subsidence warming of a synoptic anomalous anti-cyclone, which is induced by the diabatic heating over the mountains in the daytime. Negative air ions (NAIs) are crucial for assessing the impact of forests on wellbeing and enhancing the physical and mental health of individuals. They serve as pivotal indicators for assessing air quality. Comprehensive research into the distribution patterns of NAI concentrations, especially the correlation between NAI concentrations and meteorological elements in tourist environments, necessitates the accumulation of additional long-term monitoring data. In this paper, long-term on-site monitoring of NAI concentrations, air temperature, relative humidity, and other factors was conducted in real time over 24 h, from April 2020 to May 2022, to explore the temporal dynamic patterns of NAIs and their influencing factors. The results showed that (1) the daily dynamics of NAI concentrations followed a U-shaped curve. The peak concentrations usually occurred in the early morning (4:30–8:00) and evening (19:10–22:00), and the lowest concentrations usually occurred at noon (12:50–14:45). (2) At the monthly scale, NAI concentrations were relatively high in February, August, and September and low in January, June, and December. At the seasonal scale, NAI concentrations were significantly higher in winter than in other seasons, with higher concentrations occurring in the summer and autumn. (3) Relative humidity, air temperature, and air quality index (AQI) were the primary factors that influenced NAI concentrations. Relative humidity showed a significant positive correlation with NAI concentrations, while air temperature and AQI both exhibited a significant negative correlation with NAI concentrations. Higher air quality corresponds to higher NAI concentrations. Our research provides new insights into NAI temporal dynamics patterns and their driving factors, and it will aid in scheduling outdoor recreation and forest health activities. Increase in the concentration of atmospheric greenhouse gases significantly contributes to global warming, representing a substantial challenge for crop production. The study was conducted to determine the growth competition between rice (Oryza sativa) and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa oryzicola) under (i) different cropping patterns and (ii) elevated air temperatures in phytotrons under field condition, at two plant densities (4 and 16 plants per pot). Rice and barnyardgrass were planted with varying cropping patterns (rice: barnyardgrass mixture proportions); 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100. Air temperatures were maintained in phytotrons as follows: Ambient–A (Control), A +0.8 °C, A +1.9 °C and A +3.4 °C. Plant attributes such as plant height, number of effective tillers, shoot dry weight and grain yield of rice were recorded in this study in the rice/barnyardgrass mixture proportions in the order of 100:0 > 75:25 > 50:50 > 25:75. The highest rice grain yield (37.7 g/pot) was recorded in the monoculture (100:0 rice/barnyardgrass) under ambient temperature, whereas the lowest rice grain yield (0.3 g/pot) was recorded at the 25:75 rice/barnyardgrass mixture proportion under ambient +3.4 °C. The increase in temperature had a significant impact on growth, number of tillers and shoot dry weight of both rice and barnyardgrass plants and followed the order of ambient +3.4 °C > ambient +1.9 °C > ambient +0.8 °C > ambient. However, higher temperature negatively affected the yield of rice and resulted in a substantial decrease in the grain yield. Barnyardgrass showed the highest plant characteristics when grown alongside rice compared to the growth in monoculture. This indicates that barnyardgrass was highly competitive when grown under interspecific competition compared to an intraspecific competition. Despite its ability to thrive in high-temperature environments, cowpea productivity can be hampered by heat stress, particularly when night air temperatures exceed 17 °C. The crop's germplasm pool potentially possesses significant genetic variability that can be harnessed to breed for heat-tolerant varieties. Progress in improving the crop for heat tolerance has been limited, especially under the hot, short-day environments typical of sub-Saharan Africa. Only a few heat-tolerant varieties have been released, partly due to the limited understanding of heat stress tolerance mechanisms and environmental interaction effects on genotypes, as well as imprecise phenotyping. This review contributes to the literature on cowpea heat stress by highlighting key achievements, challenges, and future directions in breeding heat-tolerant cowpea genotypes and by providing additional information from the recent literature. We opine that the genetic variability for heat tolerance-related traits in cowpea has not been sufficiently exploited in developing varieties adapted to the target production environments. Therefore, attention should be given to assessing the crop's genetic repository by targeting adaptive, morphological, and physiological traits that enhance heat stress tolerance. We propose that breeding programs integrate phenotyping of whole-plant physiological traits and molecular breeding to identify breeder-friendly markers for routine selection. This should be followed by introgression of the heat-tolerant favourable alleles to adapted susceptible varieties using rapid and precise approaches that take advantage of modern genetic and genomic resources such as innovative genetic resources, genomic selection, speed breeding, and genome editing technologies. These tools hold great promise in fast-tracking the development of improved heat-tolerant varieties and incorporating the must-have traits preferred by cowpea farmers and consumers. In view of the likely increase in atmospheric temperature to be occasioned by climate change, there is an urgent need to develop heat-tolerant cowpea varieties to ensure the sustainability of current and future cropping and agri-food systems. Rising temperature affects agricultural production, causing food insecurity. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate how increased temperature influences pollen viability, photosynthetic and enzymatic responses, and their consequences on the final yield of cowpea cultivars. The cultivars BRS Acauã, BRS Guariba, BRS Gurguéia, and BRS Pajeú were used, kept in growth chambers under two temperature regimes: 24.8–30.8–37.8 °C and 20–26–33 °C. The cultivars BRS Acauã, BRS Guariba, and BRS Pajeú showed prolonged flowering and greater flower abortion, at 23.58%, 34.71%, and 25.55%, respectively, under an increase of 4.8 °C in temperature. This increase also reduced the viability of BRS Acauã and BRS Pajeú pollen by 34 and 7%, respectively. Heating increased stomatal opening and transpiration but reduced chlorophyll content. The enzymatic response varied according to cultivars and temperature. Changes in photosynthetic and enzymatic activities contribute to reducing pollen viability and productivity. BRS Acauã was the most affected, with an 82% reduction in the number of seeds and a 70% reduction in production. BRS Gurguéia maintained its production, even with an increase of 4.8 °C, and can be selected as a cultivar with the potential to tolerate high temperatures as it maintained pollen viability, with less flower abortion, with the synchrony of physiological and biochemical responses and, consequently, greater production. Land Surface Temperature (LST) is an important resource for a variety of tasks. The data are mostly free of charge and combine high spatial and temporal resolution with reliable data collection over a historical timeframe. When remote sensing is used to provide LST data, such as the MODA11 product using information from the MODIS sensors attached to NASA satellites, data acquisition can be hindered by clouds or cloud shadows, occluding the sensors' view on different areas of the world. This makes it difficult to take full advantage of the high resolution of the data. A common solution to interpolating LST data is statistical interpolation methods, such as fitting polynomials or thin plate spine interpolation. These methods have difficulties in incorporating additional knowledge about the research area and learning local dependencies that can help with the interpolation process. We propose a novel approach to interpolating remote sensing LST data in a fixed research area considering local ground-site air temperature measurements. The two-step approach consists of learning the LST from air temperature measurements, where the ground-site weather stations are located, and interpolating the remaining missing values with partial convolutions within a U-Net deep learning architecture. Our approach improves the interpolation of LST for our research area by 44% in terms of RMSE, when compared to state-of-the-art statistical methods. Due to the use of air temperature, we can provide coverage of 100%, even when no valid LST measurements were available. Many studies have sought to overcome the two main limitations of the average method of ISO 9869-1—its long test duration and low accuracy. These studies reported that the reliability of the results is dependent on the temperature differences. This consensus was based on the results of studies that measured a few cases with specific temperature differences, and the convergence criteria utilized for the representative thermal transmittance (U-value) were rarely examined. This study analyzed the influence of the average temperature difference and test duration on the convergence characteristics and accuracy of U-value estimation using the average method. Data from a north-facing exterior wall with a theoretical U-value of 0.145 W/m2·K were measured between June 2022 and May 2023. The influences of different measurement conditions were analyzed for cases divided based on four measurement periods and 11 average air temperature differences. The findings show that an accurate U-value can be obtained from 7 days' worth of measurement data with an average temperature difference of 10 °C or higher and that the improvement in accuracy is minimal under stricter conditions. To achieve a convergence probability of over 90% for temperature differences of 10 °C or greater, the second and third criteria required measurement periods of 7 and 15 days respectively. There have been fruitful publications on thermal comfort of urban residential buildings in China. However, there is a lack of reviews on this topic to perform a comprehensive analysis and find opportunities to meet occupants' thermal comfort needs while improving building energy efficiencies. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a systematic review on the advancements in research on thermal comfort in urban residential buildings in China. Firstly, two common thermal comfort research approaches, i.e., field studies and laboratory studies, are discussed. Secondly, eleven main thermal comfort evaluation indicators are summarized. Finally, this paper analyzes the thermal comfort survey data from different researchers, discusses the impacts of adaptive behaviors on human thermal comfort, and provides recommendations for future research on urban residential thermal comfort. It was found that people have higher and higher requirements for their indoor thermal environment as time goes by, especially in the winter; the thermoneutral temperature is higher in warmer climate regions in the summer but lower in the winter than in colder climate regions; the thermoneutral temperature tends to increase with the indoor air temperature due to an adaptation to the indoor thermal environment. The outcomes of this paper provide valuable information on thermal comfort behaviors of urban residents in different climate zones in China, which can serve as a resource for the academic community conducting future research on thermal comfort and assist policymakers in enhancing building energy efficiencies without compromising the occupants' comfort. The paper evaluates the usability of remote satellite-based and proximal ground-based agrometeorological data sources for precision agriculture and crop production in Croatia. The compared agrometeorological datasets stem from the open-access data sources Copernicus CDS and the Agri4Cast portal, and commercial in situ agrometeorological stations (PinovaMeteo) which monitor environmental parameters relevant to the physiological state of crops. The study compares relevant parameters for 10 different locations in Croatia for three consecutive years (2019, 2020, and 2021) to investigate whether model-based data from ERA5-Land and Agri4Cast are well-correlated with ground measurements from independent in situ stations (PinovaMeteo) for specific agrometeorological parameters (air and soil temperature, and precipitation). Our results indicate the following: both the ERA5-Land and Agri4Cast datasets show mostly strong positive correlations with ground observations for air temperature, modest correlations for soil temperature, but modest or even low correlations for precipitation. Analysis of the residuals indicates higher overall residual values, especially in areas with complex topography and near large bodies of water or the sea, and deviations of residuals that may limit the usability of satellite- and model-based data for decision-making in agriculture. Based on observation data from 1958 to 2020, the current study explores the interdecadal modulation effects on moderate El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) episodes and East Asian (EA) winter surface air temperature (SAT) through the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Strong and moderate ENSO episodes are classified by their amplitudes. The current work investigates the influence of moderate ENSO episodes on the EA winter SAT, especially moderate La Niña episodes, which show a close relationship with the EA winter SAT. To explore the PDO modulation effect on the influence of ENSO episodes, these ENSO episodes are further divided into two categories in terms of warm or cold PDO phases. The composite results show that in the warm phase of the PDO, the moderate La Niña signal is relatively strong and stable, with a profound impact on the EA winter SAT variability, whereas in the cold PDO phase, the relationship between the EA winter SAT and moderate La Niña episodes becomes ambiguous. Further studies show that the PDO modulates the moderate La Niña impacts on EA winter SAT primarily through varying the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). While moderate La Niña episodes take place in a warm PDO phase, positive and negative anomalies of sea level pressure (SLP) are observed in the Eurasian continent and mid–high-latitude North Pacific, respectively, favoring anomalous northerlies along the eastern coast of East Asia and therefore a colder-than-normal EA winter. In contrast, in a moderate La Niña winter during the cold PDO phase, the mid–high-latitude North Pacific is controlled by an anomalous high-pressure system with southerly anomalies along its western flank, and therefore, a weak warm pattern is observed for the EA winter SAT. This paper describes the metrological procedure carried out for the evaluation of the building influence on air temperature measurements. This evaluation aims to produce reliable conclusions, information, and data to contribute to the WMO siting classification schemes for air temperature measurements. For this purpose, a field experiment was designed, deployed, and carried out. As a result, one-year-lasting air temperature measurements were collected and analyzed. In this field experiment, a 200 m wide building is the unique artificial heat source and the unique object projecting shades over a flat surface (no discernible slope) in an open space bigger than 40,000 m2, covered with short grass. Eight calibrated thermometers, equipped with the same model of artificially ventilated radiation shields, were set up at a height of 1.5 m from the ground and at different distances from a 200 m wide building. This configuration provides the observation of the horizontal air temperature radially distributed from the building and, as a conclusion, it enables the quantification of the building influences on air temperature measurements at different distances from the building. This document describes the field experiment, the analysis procedure, the evolution of the building influence on air temperature measurements along the day, and the impact of other meteorological parameters on this building effect. Two different building effects are observed: the positive building effect, where the air temperature decreases with the distance to the building, and the negative building effect, where the air temperature increases with the distance to the building. It is also noticed that the building influence is higher on clear days and the daily maximum building influence values are directly linked with the corresponding maximum solar irradiance. The influence of wind on the building effect is also analyzed, reaching the conclusion that due to characteristic of local winds, in terms of low speed and direction, the wind impact could be considered as negligible. The maximum values of building influence on air temperature measurements, the associated uncertainty analysis, and the conclusions are presented in this paper. Oscillations in global modes of variability (MoVs) form global teleconnections that affect regional climate variability and modify the potential for severe and damaging weather conditions. Understanding the link between certain MoVs and regional climate can improve the ability to more accurately predict environmental conditions that impact human life and health. In this study, we explore the connection between different MoVs, including the Arctic oscillation (AO), Eurasian teleconnection, Indian Ocean dipole (IOD), North Atlantic oscillation (NAO), and El Niño southern oscillation (Nino34), with winter and summer climates in the High Mountain Asia (HMA) region, including geopotential height at 250 hPa (z250), 2 m air temperature (T2M), total precipitation (PRECTOT), and fractional snow cover area (fSCA). Relationships are explored for the same monthly period between the MoVs and the climate variables, and a lagged correlation analysis is used to investigate whether any relationship exists at different time lags. We find that T2M has a negative correlation with the Eurasian teleconnection in the Inner Tibetan Plateau and central China in both winter and summer and a positive correlation in western China in summer. PRECTOT has a positive correlation with all MoVs in most regions in winter, especially with the IOD, and a negative correlation in summer, especially with the Eurasian teleconnection. Snow cover in winter is positively correlated with most indices throughout many regions in HMA, likely due to wintertime precipitation also being positively correlated with most indices. Generally, the AO and NAO show similar correlation patterns with all climate variables, especially in the winter, possibly due to their oscillations being so similar. Furthermore, the AO and NAO are shown to be less significant in explaining the variation in HMA climate compared to other MoVs such as the Eurasian teleconnection. Overall, our results identify different time windows and specific regions within HMA that exhibit high correlations between climate and MoVs, which might offer additional predictability of the MoVs as well as of climate and weather patterns in HMA and throughout the globe. Research on spatio-temporal geostatistical modeling remains a critical challenge in numerous scientific and engineering disciplines. This paper introduces a novel extension of dual kriging, called spatio-temporal dual kriging (ST-DK), in which drift functions with fixed and adaptive coefficients are established. The approach appears to be effective in modeling complex spatio-temporal dynamics, particularly when relevant auxiliary variables exert substantial influence on the target variable. To illustrate its performance, we compare the ST-DK model with the classical spatio-temporal regression kriging (ST-RK) and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) models for estimating temperature and air pressure data from Thailand in 2018. Our findings demonstrate that both the ST-DK and ST-RK models when utilizing adaptive coefficients outperform their fixed coefficient counterparts. In order to explore the law of gas–solid countercurrent cooling heat transfer in a vertical sinter cooling furnace at a high temperature, based on the Euler model and the local non-thermodynamic equilibrium theory, an exergy efficiency model was built to evaluate the heat transfer process in the vertical sinter cooling furnace with different parameter changes. It was found that the inlet temperature of cooling air and sinter inlet temperature are the main factors affecting the temperature field and gas–solid heat transfer characteristics in the furnace. Under the conditions of each parameter, the cooling air temperature presents a radial "M" shape distribution. The axial cooling section is the most intense area of gas–solid heat transfer, and this part has the best heat transfer effect. When the inlet temperature of cooling air and the inlet temperature of sinter increase, the outlet temperature of sinter and the outlet temperature of cooling air increase. When the sinter equivalent diameter increases, the cooling air outlet temperature decreases gradually, while the sinter outlet temperature increases gradually. When the diameter and height of the cooling section increase, respectively, the outlet temperature of the sinter decreases and the outlet temperature of the cooling air increases. This paper experimentally analyses an indoor environment assessment of a large group of respondents regarding their subjective perception of overall comfort, indoor air quality and humidity. The questionnaire survey was applied as a testing method together with measurements of the physical parameters conducted with a microclimate meter. Two types of environment were analysed: educational rooms and the climate chamber. The comparative analysis of the sensations experienced within them indicates that they generate quite similar responses; however, some discrepancies have been identified. The overall comfort of the climate chamber was typically assessed as being higher than that of the educational rooms at the same air temperature. The most favourable air temperature in the climate chamber was ca. 20.7 °C, while in the educational rooms it was ca. 22.3 °C. The most preferable conditions in the climate chamber occurred at a thermal sensation vote of −0.4 ("pleasantly slightly cool"), while in the educational rooms it occurred at +0.2 ("neutral/pleasantly slightly warm"). Quite strong correlations between overall comfort and indoor air quality as well as between humidity assessment and humidity preference votes were observed, which did not seem to depend on the type of environment. A passive microwave instrument will be carried by China's geostationary microwave satellite. A microwave hyper-spectral band included by the instrument ranges from 52.6 to 57.3 GHz, and totally has 89 channels in this spectral domain. The design of the hyper-spectral band is described from the aspects of scientific objectives and specifications. The weighting functions for each channel are calculated utilizing radiative transfer simulations under clear sky conditions. Then, the information content as well as the degree of freedom for signal are computed and analyzed to characterize this hyper-spectral sounding for atmospheric temperature profiling. Both the vertical distribution of the weighting functions and the width of retrieval averaging kernels indicate that the hyper-spectral band can provide more denser sampling for atmospheric temperature. The information content for the hyper-spectral band is approximately 46% higher than that of the ATMS-type channel 3 to 15, indicating that hyper-spectral measurement can improve the accuracy of retrieval. The most informative channels mainly locate near 57 GHz, having good consistency with the existing channels. The height range where the retrieval using the hyper-spectral observations is sensitive to the true profile, begins from about 800 to 1 hPa. Some channels can be considered as alternatives to each other since they have very similar information content and weighting functions. Global warming is influenced by an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration in the atmosphere. Consequently, Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) is the main factor that influences the exchange of carbon (C) between the atmosphere and the soil. As a result, agricultural ecosystems are a potential carbon dioxide (CO2) sink, particularly rice paddies (Oryza sativa). Therefore, a static chamber with a portable CO2 analyzer was designed and implemented for three rice plots to monitor CO2 emissions. Furthermore, a weather station was installed to record meteorological variables. The vegetative, reproductive, and maturation phases of the crop lasted 95, 35, and 42 days post-sowing (DPS), respectively. In total, the crop lasted 172 DPS. Diurnal NEE had the highest CO2 absorption capacity at 10:00 a.m. for the tillering stage (82 and 89 DPS), floral primordium (102 DPS), panicle initiation (111 DPS), and flowering (126 DPS). On the other hand, the maximum CO2 emission at 82, 111, and 126 DPS occurred at 6:00 p.m. At 89 and 102 DPS, it occurred at 4:00 and 6:00 a.m., respectively. NEE in the vegetative stage was −25  μ m o l C O 2   m 2   s − 1 , and in the reproductive stage, it was −35  μ m o l C O 2   m 2   s − 1 , indicating the highest absorption capacity of the plots. The seasonal dynamics of NEE were mainly controlled by the air temperature inside the chamber (Tc) (R = −0.69), the relative humidity inside the chamber (RHc) (R = −0.66), and net radiation (Rn) (R = −0.75). These results are similar to previous studies obtained via chromatographic analysis and eddy covariance (EC), which suggests that the portable analyzer could be an alternative for CO2 monitoring. The long-term presence of PPCPs in the aqueous environment poses a potentially significant threat to human life and physical health and the safety of the water environment. In our previous work, we investigated low-cost pitch-based HCP adsorbents with an excellent adsorption capacity and magnetic responsiveness through a simple one-step Friedel–Crafts reaction. In this work, we further investigated the adsorption behavior of the prepared pitch-based adsorbents onto three PPCP molecules (DFS, AMP, and antipyrine) in detail. The maximum adsorption capacity of P-MPHCP for DFS was 444.93 mg g−1. The adsorption equilibrium and kinetic processes were well described through the Langmuir model and the proposed secondary kinetic model. The negative changes in Gibbs free energy and enthalpy reflected that the adsorption of HCPs onto PPCPs was a spontaneous exothermic process. The recoverability results showed that the adsorption of MPHCP and P-MPHCP onto DFS remained above 95% after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. The interplay between metal contamination and climate change may exacerbate the negative impact on the soil microbiome and, consequently, on soil health and ecosystem services. We assessed the response of the microbial community of a heavy metal-contaminated soil when exposed to short-term (48 h) variations in air temperature, soil humidity or ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the absence and presence of Enchytraeus crypticus (soil invertebrate). Each of the climate scenarios simulated significantly altered at least one of the microbial parameters measured. Irrespective of the presence or absence of invertebrates, the effects were particularly marked upon exposure to increased air temperature and alterations in soil moisture levels (drought and flood scenarios). The observed effects can be partly explained by significant alterations in soil properties such as pH, dissolved organic carbon, and water-extractable heavy metals, which were observed for all scenarios in comparison to standard conditions. The occurrence of invertebrates mitigated some of the impacts observed on the soil microbial community, particularly in bacterial abundance, richness, diversity, and metabolic activity. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering the interplay between climate change, anthropogenic pressures, and soil biotic components to assess the impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems and to develop and implement effective management strategies. Aside from plant breeding and agricultural inputs, understanding and interpreting the Genotype × Environment (G × E) interaction has contributed significantly to the increase in wheat yield. In Central Macedonia, Greece, fifteen commercially important durum wheat cultivars and one landrace were tested in six cultivation environments classified into high- and low- productivity environments. This study aimed to identify the most productive and stable durum wheat genotypes across Mediterranean farming systems through a comparative examination of genotype plus genotype by environment (GGE) biplot alongside fifteen parametric and non-parametric stability models. In the organic (low productivity) environment, cultivar Zoi and the landrace Lemnos showed remarkable results, indicating a potential solution for biological agriculture. For the late-sowing (low productivity) environment, some widespread varieties such as Mexicali-81, Meridiano, and Maestrale had excellent performance, showing potential to overcome more adverse conditions during critical grain filling periods such as higher air temperature and deficient soil moisture, i.e., conditions that correlate with climate change. Evaluation of genotypes in all environments for a combination of high yield and stable production, showed that the best genotypes were G8 (Simeto), G2 (Canavaro), and G12 (Elpida). In the subgroup with the three high-productivity environments, G12 (Elpida), G8 (Simeto), and G6 (Mexicali-81) were the best genotypes, followed by G2 (Canavaro), while in the low-productivity subgroup, the G2 (Canavaro), G13 (Zoi) and G8 (Simeto) genotypes were the best. The environmental temperature and humidity are crucial factors for the normal growth and development of arbor tree cuttings by altering their hormone levels and influencing their physiological activities. Developing a temperature and humidity environmental model for arbor tree cuttings serves as a key technique to improve the adjustment performance of environmental parameters in facility agriculture systems and enhance the rooting rate of cuttings. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of current research on the inherent characteristics of cuttings and the factors influencing environmental temperature and humidity. It explores the mechanisms of interaction between the inherent characteristics of cuttings and the factors influencing environmental temperature and humidity. This paper investigates the interactive relationships among the factors affecting environmental temperature and humidity. It analyzes methods to improve the efficiency of constructing temperature and humidity environmental models for arbor tree cuttings. To enhance the transferability of the environmental model, the necessary physiological activities under the influence of plant hormones are generalized as common physiological traits in the growth and development of cuttings. In addition, this paper explores the factors influencing the air and substrate temperature and the humidity in facility agriculture systems as well as two types of facilities for controlling environmental temperature and humidity. Furthermore, it reviews the research progress in environmental models from both mechanistic and data-driven perspectives. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the characteristics associated with these two model categories. Building upon this, the paper summarizes and discusses methods employed in constructing temperature and humidity environmental models for arbor tree cuttings. In addition, it also anticipates the application of deep learning techniques in the construction of temperature and humidity environmental models for arbor cuttings, including utilizing machine vision technology to monitor their growth status. Finally, it proposes suggestions for building physiological models of fruit tree-like arbor cuttings at different growth stages. To enhance the transferability of environmental models, the integration of physiological models of cuttings, environmental models, and control system performance are suggested to create an environmental identification model. The impact of elevated air temperature and heat stress on human health is a global concern. It not only affects our well-being directly, but also reduces our physical work capacity, leading to negative effects on society and economic productivity. Climate change has already affected the climate in Luxembourg and, based on the results of regional climate models, extreme heat events will become more frequent and intense in the future. To assess historical conditions, the micro-scaleRayManPro 3.1 model was used to simulate the thermal stress levels for different genders and age classes based on hourly input data spanning the last two decades. For the assessment of future conditions, with a special emphasis on heat waves, a multi-model ensemble of regional climate models for different emission scenarios taken from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) was used. For both, the past and future conditions in Luxemburg, an increase in the heat stress levels was observed. Small differences for different age groups and genders became obvious. In addition to the increase in the absolute number of heat waves, an intensification of higher temperatures and longer durations were also detected. Although some indications of the adaptation to rising air temperatures can be observed for high-income countries, our results underscore the likelihood of escalating heat-related adverse effects on human health and economic productivity unless more investments are made in research and risk management strategies. This study simulated the wind energy density distribution in the Jiaodong Peninsula region using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. The impacts of different boundary-layer and near-surface parameterization schemes on the simulated wind speed and direction were investigated. The results indicate that the Yonsei University (YSU) scheme and the Quasi-Normal Scale Elimination (QNSE) scheme performed optimally for wind speed and wind direction. We also conducted a sensitivity test of the simulation results for atmospheric pressure, air temperature, and relative humidity. The statistical analysis showed that the YSU scheme performed optimally, while the MRF and BL schemes performed poorly. Following this, the wind energy distribution in the coastal hilly areas of the Jiaodong Peninsula was simulated using the YSU boundary-layer parameterization scheme. The modeled wind energy density in the mountainous and hilly areas of the Jiaodong Peninsula were higher than that in other regions. The wind energy density exhibits a seasonal variation, with the highest values in spring and early summer and the lowest in summer. In weather forecasting and climate monitoring, daily maximum and minimum air temperatures (TMAX and TMIN) are fundamental for operational and research purposes, from early warning of extreme events to climate change studies. This study provides an integrated evaluation of TMAX and TMIN from two European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) products: ERA5 reanalysis (1980–2019) and operational weather forecasts (2017–2021). Both products are evaluated using in situ observations from the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN). While the analyses span globally, emphasis is given to four key regions: Europe, East and West United States, and Australia. Results reveal a general underestimation of TMAX and overestimation of TMIN in both operational forecasts and ERA5, highlighting the limitation of the ECMWF model in estimating the amplitude of the diurnal cycle of air temperature. ERA5′s accuracy has improved over the past decade, due to enhanced constrain of land–atmosphere analysis streaming from more and higher-quality satellite data. Furthermore, ERA5 outperforms one-day-ahead weather forecasts, indicating that non-real-time dependent studies should rely on ERA5 instead of real-time operational forecasts.
