Garlic is known to have diverse effects on mammalian cells, being cytotoxic, especially to cancer cells, but also protect against oxidative stress. Mammalian erythrocyte is a simple cell devoid of intracellular organelles, protein synthesis ability, and most signaling pathways. Therefore, examination of the effects of garlic on erythrocytes allows for revealing primary events in the cellular action of garlic extract. In this study, human erythrocytes or erythrocyte membranes were exposed to garlic extract at various dilutions. Hemoglobin oxidation to methemoglobin, increased binding of hemoglobin to the membrane, and formation of Heinz bodies were observed. Garlic extract depleted acid-soluble thiols, especially glutathione, and induced a prooxidative shift in the cellular glutathione redox potential. The extract increased the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes, induced hemolysis, and inhibited hemolysis in isotonic ammonium chloride, indicative of decreased membrane permeability for Cl− and increased the membrane fluidity. Fluorescent probes indicated an increased level of reactive oxygen species and induction of lipid peroxidation, but these results should be interpreted with care since the extract alone induced oxidation of the probes (dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate and BODIPY C11). The chlorination mechanism of neodymium oxide for the production of anhydrous neodymium chloride was analyzed based on the reaction temperature and reaction ratio of ammonium chloride, considering the suppression of the generation of NdOCl, an intermediate product of the reaction process. The results were obtained by distinguishing the shape of the produced NdCl3 (powder and bulk) and the setup of the chlorination equipment, reflecting its sensitivity to moisture and oxygen. The powdered form of NdCl3 produced at 400 °C and under argon gas flow was identified as NdCl3·6(H2O), while the bulk form of NdCl3 produced by melting at 760 °C after a chlorination process consisted of anhydrous NdCl3 and NdCl3∙n(H2O). The powdered NdCl3 produced in an argon gas environment with a controlled level of oxygen (below 16.05 ppm) and moisture (below 0.01 ppm) content was identified as single-phase anhydrous NdCl3 and showed the highest chlorination conversion rate of 98.65%. The addition of overstoichiometric ratios of NH4Cl in the chlorination process decreased the total amount of impurities (N, H, and O) in the NdCl3 product and increased the conversion rate of NdCl3. The preparation of an environmentally friendly and efficient flocculant for solid-liquid separation in industrial wastewater is highly important. In this study, a novel cationic flocculant (AL-g-PAMA) was synthesized by a thermal initiation method using alkali lignin (AL) as the main chain and acrylamide (AM) and methacrylamido propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) as the grafted side chains. The structure, thermal stability, and surface morphology of the copolymers were investigated by various characterization methods. The results indicated the successful synthesis of AL-g-PAMA. AL-g-PAMA was applied to improve solid-liquid separation in kaolin suspensions. The results showed that AL-g-PAMA had excellent flocculation-sedimentation and dewatering efficiency. When the dosage of AL-g-PAMA #5 was 600.0 g/t(s), the thickness of the compressed layer was 2.2 cm, the floc settling velocity was 24.1 cm/min, and the transmittance of the supernatant was 84.0%. The moisture content of the filter cake decreased from 55.0% to 43.4% after treatment with AL-g-PAMA #5. The results of zeta potential and focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) analysis indicated that bridging and electroneutralization were the main flocculation mechanisms. Soil N-fixing bacterial (NFB) community may facilitate the successful establishment and invasion of exotic non-nitrogen (N) fixing plants. Invasive plants can negatively affect the NFB community by releasing N during litter decomposition, especially where N input from atmospheric N deposition is high. This study aimed to quantitatively compare the effects of the invasive Rhus typhina L. and native Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. trees on the litter mass loss, soil physicochemical properties, soil enzyme activities, and the NFB. Following N supplementation at 5 g N m−2 yr−1 in four forms (including ammonium, nitrate, urea, and mixed N with an equal mixture of the three individual N forms), a litterbag-experiment was conducted indoors to simulate the litter decomposition of the two trees. After four months of decomposition, the litter cumulative mass losses of R. typhina under the control, ammonium chloride, potassium nitrate, urea, and mixed N were 57.93%, 57.38%, 58.69%, 63.66%, and 57.57%, respectively. The litter cumulative mass losses of K. paniculata under the control, ammonium chloride, potassium nitrate, urea, and mixed N were 54.98%, 57.99%, 48.14%, 49.02%, and 56.83%, respectively. The litter cumulative mass losses of equally mixed litter from both trees under the control, ammonium chloride, potassium nitrate, urea, and mixed N were 42.95%, 42.29%, 50.42%, 46.18%, and 43.71%, respectively. There were antagonistic responses to the co-decomposition of the two trees. The litter mass loss of the two trees was mainly associated with the taxonomic richness of NFB. The form of N was not significantly associated with the litter mass loss in either species, the mixing effect intensity of the litter co-decomposition of the two species, and NFB alpha diversity. Litter mass loss of R. typhina was significantly higher than that of K. paniculata under urea. Seven increasing levels of water salinity from 0.029 to 0.600 M (as NaCl) were used to investigate the dependence of pH measurement, performed using colorimetric sensor arrays (CSAs), on ionic strength. The CSAs were arrays of sensing spots prepared in the form of sol–gel-embedding Bromothymol Blue (BB) and Bromocresol Green (BCG) in a porous nitrocellulose support. The support was impregnated over the entire thickness (≈100 µm), allowing for the signal (Hue) acquisition on the opposite side to the contact with the sample solution. Three CSAs were prepared, M1, M2, and M3. M1 contained a free cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate (CTApTs), for modulating the p K a of the indicators. In M2, the surfactant dimethyloctadecyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonium chloride (DTSACl) was covalently bonded to the sol–gel. M3 was prepared like M2 but using a larger amount of ethanol as the solvent for the synthesis. The modulation of the CTApTs or the DTSACl concentration enabled the tuning of the p K a . In general, the p K a modulation ability decreased with the increase in salinity. The presence of a surfactant covalently linked to the backbone partially reduced the competitiveness of the anionic species, improving the results. Nevertheless, the salt effect was still present, and a correction algorithm was required. Between pH 5.00 and 12.00, this correction could be made automatically by using spots taken as references to produce sensors independent of salinity. This work studies the antimicrobial activity of benzyldimethyldodecyl ammonium chloride (BDMDAC)-coated microparticles with distinct morphological structures. Functionalized microparticles were prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique on hydroxyapatite (Hap), calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and glass beads (GB) cores. All particles were characterized, before and after functionalization, by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunner–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses. Antimicrobial activity was tested against planktonic Pseudomonas fluorescens. Planktonic bacteria were exposed to 100 mg/L, 200 mg/L and 400 mg/L of BDMDAC-coated microparticles for 240 min. This strategy promoted a complete bacteria reduction at 200 mg/L for Hap microparticles after 240 min. No release of biocide was detected through HPLC analyses during 2 weeks, suggesting that bacteria inactivation may be attributed to a contact killing mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ores (WREOs) are significant strategic mineral resources. In industry, in situ leaching technology is usually applied with ammonium chloride and ammonium sulfate as the leaching solution. However, the slow seepage velocity of the leaching solution and low rare earth leaching efficiency still need to be improved. Ammonium formate can effectively improve the WREO leaching process. In order to further explore the effects of ammonium formate on the ammonium salt leaching process for WREOs, ammonium chloride and ammonium sulfate compounded with ammonium formate were used as leaching agents to determine their effects on leaching efficiency, seepage velocity and swelling. The results show that in the presence of ammonium formate, the rare earth leaching efficiencies with ammonium chloride and ammonium sulfate are both slightly increased, the seepage velocity of ammonium chloride and ammonium sulfate is increased by 1.67 × 10−4 cm·s−1 and 1.18 × 10−4 cm·s−1, and the swelling percentage falls by 0.14% and 0.37%, respectively. The thickness of the adsorbed water layer and thermogravimetric and XRD results confirm that ammonium formate can inhibit surface hydration and thus improve the WREO leaching process. In this research, a novel collector cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) was used to separate hematite from quartz via reverse flotation for the first time. Micro-flotation tests showed that CTAC had a strong ability to selectively collect quartz and that a separation of hematite from quartz could be accomplished with a concentration of 0.00263 mmol/L CTAC. Zeta-potential measurements indicated that the positive CTAC+ species could selectively increase the surface potential of quartz, but that it had rather a weak effect on the hematite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) detection indicated that CTAC had a stronger binding affinity to oxygen sites on the surface of quartz than on hematite, resulting in a large amount of CTAC being predominantly adsorbed onto quartz. This was supported by the atomic concentration of C1s and N1s of quartz after CTAC treatments were 4.25 and 2.84 times higher than hematite, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supercapacitors, with high energy density, rapid charge–discharge capabilities, and long cycling ability, have gained favor among many researchers. However, the universality of high-performance carbon-based electrodes is often constrained by their complex fabrication methods. In this study, the common industrial materials, zinc gluconate and ammonium chloride, are uniformly mixed and subjected to a one-step carbonization strategy to prepare three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon materials with high specific surface area and suitable nitrogen doping. The results show that a specific capacitance of 221 F g−1 is achieved at a current density of 1 A g−1. The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor achieves a high energy density of 17 Wh kg−1, and after 50,000 cycles at a current density of 50 A g−1, it retains 82% of its initial capacitance. Moreover, the operating voltage window of the symmetrical device can be easily expanded to 2.5 V when using Et4NBF4 as the electrolyte, resulting in a maximum energy density of up to 153 Wh kg−1, and retaining 85.03% of the initial specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles. This method, using common industrial materials as raw materials, provides ideas for the simple preparation of high-performance carbon materials and also provides a promising method for the large-scale production of highly porous carbons. Enhancing the conductivity loss of SiC nanowires through doping is beneficial for improving their electromagnetic wave absorption performance. In this work, N-doped SiC nanowires were synthesized using three different methods. The results indicate that a large amount of Si2ON will be generated during the microwave synthesis of SiC nanowires in a nitrogen atmosphere. In addition, the secondary heat-treatment of the as-synthesized SiC nanowires under nitrogen atmosphere will significantly reduce their stacking fault density. When ammonium chloride is introduced as a doped nitrogen source in the reaction raw material, the N-doped SiC nanowires with high-density stacking faults can be synthesized by microwave heating. Therefore, the polarization loss induced by faults and the conductivity loss caused by doping will synergistically enhance the dielectric and EMW absorption properties of SiC nanowires in the range of 2–18 GHz. When the filling ratio of N-doped SiC nanowires is 20 wt.%, the composite shows a minimum reflection loss of –22.2 dB@17.92 GHz, and an effective absorption (RL ≤ –10 dB) bandwidth of 4.24 GHz at the absorber layer thickness of 2.2 mm. As a typical organic semiconductor photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) suffers from low photocatalytic activity. In this paper, g-C3N4 was prepared by polymerization of dicyandiamide (C2H4N4) in the presence of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl). It was found that the addition of ammonium chloride can greatly improve the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 towards CO2 reduction. The optimal photocatalyst (CN-Cl 20) exhibited a CO2-to-CO conversion activity of 50.6 μmolg−1h−1, which is 3.1 times that of pristine bulk g-C3N4 (BCN) that was prepared in the absence of any ammonium chloride. The enhanced photoactivity of g-C3N4 was attributed to the combined effects of chloride modification and an enlarged specific surface area. Chloride modification of g-C3N4 can not only reduce the bandgap, but also causes a negatively shifted conduction band (CB) potential level, while ammonia (NH3) gas from the decomposition of NH4Cl can act as a gas template to exfoliate layered structure g-C3N4, improving the specific surface from 6.8 to 21.3 m2g−1. An efficient approach to a novel family of (Z)-3-amino-3-oxo-1-propenyl selenocyanates was developed based on the reaction of KSeCN with 3-trimethylsilyl-2-propynamides in the presence of ammonium chloride in methanol. The reaction was accompanied by a desilylation process. The products were not formed under the same reaction conditions in the absence of ammonium chloride, which was used for the first time in the reactions of selenocyanates with acetylenes. The use of this new methodology allowed the reaction to carry out in a regio- and stereoselective fashion as anti-addition affording vinyl selenocyanates with a (Z)-configuration in high yields. A novel method utilizing non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis (NACE) with indirect ultraviolet detection (IUD) has been developed for the analysis of five quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). The QACs analyzed in this study include dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, dioctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, octyldecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and didecyl dimethy ammonium bromide. The separation process was carried out on an uncoated fused quartz capillary with a total length of 50.2 cm (effective length 40.0 cm) and a diameter of 50 μm. The separation buffer consisted of a mixture of MeOH/ACN (90:10, v/v) containing 2 mmol/L sodium acetate, 2 mmol/L trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and 16 mmol/L dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. The sample buffer utilized a mixture of MeOH/ACN (20:80, v/v) containing 2 mmol/L TFA. During analysis, a separation voltage of 7 kV was applied, resulting in a current of approximately 2.3 μA. The detection wavelength was set at 214 nm to ensure optimal sensitivity. Under optimal conditions, the method exhibited excellent performance characteristics, with a limit of detection of 0.5 mg/L and a limit of quantitation of 5.0 mg/L for the five QACs. Linear calibration curves were obtained in a concentration range of 5.0 to 100.0 mg/L, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.999 for all compounds. The recoveries of the five QACs ranged from 92.3% to 114.7%, with relative standard deviations below 7.4%. To assess the applicability of the NACE-IUD method, 17 commercially available samples were successfully analyzed. The results confirmed the suitability of the method for accurate determination of the five QACs in disinfectant products. Deoxyadenosine triphosphate (dATP) is an important biochemical molecule. In this paper, the synthesis of dATP from deoxyadenosine monophosphate (dAMP), catalyzed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was studied. By adding chemical effectors, an efficient ATP regeneration and coupling system was constructed to achieve efficient synthesis of dATP. Factorial and response surface designs were used to optimize process conditions. Optimal reaction conditions were as follows: dAMP 1.40 g/L, glucose 40.97 g/L, MgCl2·6H2O 4.00 g/L, KCl 2.00 g/L, NaH2PO4 31.20 g/L, yeast 300.00 g/L, ammonium chloride 0.67 g/L, acetaldehyde 11.64 mL/L, pH 7.0, temperature 29.6 °C. Under these conditions, the substrate conversion was 93.80% and the concentration of dATP in the reaction system was 2.10 g/L, which was 63.10% higher than before optimization, and the concentration of product was 4 times higher than before optimization. Polyelectrolyte nanogel consisting of charged network is a prospective platform for developing nanoreactor due to their integrated features of both polyelectrolyte and hydrogel. In this work, cationic poly (methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) (PMETAC) nanogels with regulated size (30–82 nm) and crosslinking degree (10–50%), has been synthesized by Electrostatic Assembly Directed Polymerization (EADP) method and applied to load gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Based on the typical reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), the catalytic performance of the constructed nanoreactor was examined by studying their kinetic process, where the loaded AuNPs exhibited dependent activity on crosslinking degree of nanogels, while independent catalytic activity on nanogel size. Our results validate that, polyelectrolyte nanogels are capable of loading metal NPs and regulating their catalytic performance, therefore demonstrates potential for developing functional nanoreactors. This study investigates the montmorillonite (MMT) content, rotational viscosity, and colloidal index of sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) as a function of the sodium agent dosage, reaction time, reaction temperature, and stirring time. Na-MMT was modified using different octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) dosages under optimal sodification conditions. The organically modified MMT products were characterized via infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the Na-MMT with good properties (i.e., the maximum rotational viscosity and highest Na-MMT content with no decrease in the colloid index) was obtained at a 2.8% sodium carbonate dosage (measured based on the MMT mass), a temperature of 25 °C, and a reaction time of two hours. Upon organic modification of the optimized Na-MMT, OTAC entered the NA-MMT interlayer, and the contact angle was increased from 20.0° to 61.4°, the layer spacing was increased from 1.58 to 2.47 nm, and the thermal stability was conspicuously increased. Soil ammonium toxicity can decrease plant growth, and many crop species have low resistance to ammonium, including canola, an economically important crop. Different genotypes may differ in their resistance to ammonium toxicity, and therefore determining if there are genotypes that exhibit variation in their ability to tolerate soil ammonium is a research priority. Here, we evaluate how soil ammonium impacts canola root and shoot growth and characterise differences among canola genotypes in regard to resistance to ammonium toxicity. In the first experiment, eight ammonium chloride treatments and five calcium nitrate treatments were tested for their impact on the canola genotype Crusher TT, where high application (60 mg N/kg soil) significantly decreased the dry weight of canola shoots and roots and acidified the soil from pHCaCl2 5.9 to 5.6. In the second experiment, 30 canola genotypes were screened at selected concentrations of NH4+-N, using nitrate as the control. There was wide variation among genotypes in sensitivity to high NH4+-N application. Genotypes G16, G26, and G29 had greater shoot dry weights and the highest shoot N concentration of all genotypes, and G16, G26, and G28 had root dry weight up to 35% higher at high soil NH4+-N compared with other genotypes. In contrast, genotypes G3, G13, and G30 showed the largest reduction in shoot weight, and genotypes G13, G23, and G30 showed the largest reduction in root weight at high NH4+-N application. Residual NH4+-N/kg soil in soil was higher for sensitive than resistant genotypes, suggesting lower NH4+-N use in the former. Measuring the level of steroid and thyroxine hormones is key to understanding organism health conditions. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry has become the method of choice for such hormone analyses in clinical laboratories. Detection of hormones at low levels typically requires a time-consuming sample preparation, such as liquid-liquid extraction followed by solvent evaporation and re-solubilization of the sample extract. Instead, we applied salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SALLE) for the extraction of thyroxine, testosterone, cortisone, and cortisol from human serum and fish plasma samples. SALLE allowed direct injection of sample extracts. Sodium chloride and ammonium sulfate were evaluated as salting-out reagents together with four different organic solvents. High extraction recovery and reduced matrix interference were achieved by using ammonium sulfate together with 10% methanol in acetonitrile. Limits of quantification were in the range of 0.1–0.2 ng/mL and signal responses were linear (R2 > 0.997) up to at least 100 ng/mL for all hormones. The method was applied for hormone measurements in fish plasma. In conclusion, SALLE combines the simplicity of crude protein precipitation with the high analyte enrichment of a liquid-liquid extraction. Utilizing the copolymerization modification of dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), the high positive charge density of the copolymer could be maintained, thereby facilitating the deficiency of its monomer in the application. In this paper, poly (DMDAAC-co-DAMBAC) (9:1) was synthesized with an aqueous polymerization method using DMDAAC and methyl benzyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DAMBAC) as monomers and 2,2'-azobis [2-methylpropionamidine] dihydrochloride (V50) as an initiator. Targeted to the product's weight-average relative molecular mass (Mw), the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the preparation process. The optimal process conditions were obtained as follows: w (M) = 80.0%, m (V50):m (M) = 0.00700%, m (Na4EDTA):m (M) = 0.00350%, T1 = 50.0 °C, T2 = 60.0 °C, and T3 = 72.5 °C. The intrinsic viscosity ([η]) of the product was 1.780 dL/g, and the corresponding double bond conversion (Conv.) was 90.25 %. Poly (DMDAAC-co-DAMBAC) (9:1) revealed a highest Mw of 5.637 × 105, together with the polydispersity index d (Mw/Mn) as 1.464. For the demulsification performance of simulated crude oil O/W emulsions, the demulsification rate of poly (DMDAAC-co-DAMBAC) (9:1) could reach 97.73%. Our study has illustrated that the copolymerization of DMDAAC and a small amount of DAMBAC with poor reactivity could significantly improve the relative molecular weight of the polymer, enhance its lipophilicity, and thus the application scope of the polymer. In the presented work, organophilized montmorillonites (OMMT) with selected quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) with different chemical structure ((trioctylmethylammonium chloride—A336, dimethyloctadecyl[3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonium chloride—D, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide—CTAB, 2-methacryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride—MOA) were obtained and used as fillers for physically modified silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives (Si-PSA). Before OMMT addition into Si-PSA matrix, they were analyzed via TGA and XRD techniques. Type of chemical structure of QAC affected d-spacing of OMMT. New self-adhesive materials were obtained based on prepared Si-PSA compositions by adding the obtained fillers to the polymer matrix. New tapes exhibit a good level of useful properties as adhesion, cohesion, and tack—the values did not change or slightly decreased; in addition, the tapes with addition of OMMT showed high thermal resistance reaching the measuring limit of the test equipment—to 225 °C. Simple Summary: During the peri-parturient period, the development of the fetus and the production of the colostrum and milk lead to increased requirements of energy and minerals, which, in turn, predispose ruminants to the risk of metabolic diseases, such as hypocalcemia. Feed additives could provoke or prevent hypocalcemia. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of sugar beet pulp administration during the dry period, alone or together with anionic salts, on the serum concentrations of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and potassium, during the peri-parturient period of Chios dairy sheep. The results revealed a benefi cial effect of sugar beet pulp and anionic salts administration during the dry period in preventing peri-parturient hypocalcemia. Sugar beet pulp is a popular by-product of sugar extraction; however, it can potentially cause depletion of Ca availability due to its oxalic content. The experiment examined the effect of sugar beet pulp and anionic salts administration during the dry period on the serum concentration of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and potassium of dairy sheep. Eighty-seven sheep were divided into three groups (A, B, and C) according to their body condition score (BCS) and age at 40 days before the expected lambing. All groups received alfalfa hay, mixed grass straw, and a concentrate supplement. The concentrate fed to groups B and C contained sugar beet pulp. The nutritional value fed to all three groups was similar, except for Dietary Cation Anion Difference (DCAD). Animals of group A had a DCAD of +198 mEq/kg, animals of group B of +188 mEq/kg, and animals of group C were fed 20 gr/d ammonium chloride to achieve a negative DCAD (−52 mEq/kg). All groups were fed the same ration after lambing. Blood samples were collected 30 d, 20 d, 17 d, 14 d, 10 d, 7 d, and 4 d before lambing (a.p.), 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 7 d, 10 d, and 15 d after lambing (p.p) for calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and potassium, and 30 d a.p., 7 d, and 15 d p.p. for beta hydroxybutyrate acid (BHBA) concentrations. Urine samples were also collected 20 d, 10 d, 4 d a.p., and 7 d p.p for the evaluation of pH levels. Ca levels of the control group decreased earlier and were lower at 4 d a.p. compared to those of group B and C. Additionally, the control group showed lower p values compared to group C at 20 d and 17 d a.p. P levels recovered earlier post parturition in young (age 1–1.5 years old) compared to older ewes. Group C had lower urine pH values throughout the pre-parturient period, reflecting the acidifying effect of the administered ammonium chloride, without any side effect on macromineral blood concentration. Calcareous sand is a special soil formed by the accumulation of carbonate fragments. Its compressibility is caused by a high void ratio and breakable particles. Because of its high carbonate content and weak cementation, its load-bearing capacity is limited. In this study, the optimal stimulation solution was obtained with response surface methodology. Then, the effect of reinforcing calcareous sand was analysed with unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, calcium carbonate content tests, microscopy and microbial community analyses. The components and concentrations of the optimal stimulation solution were as follows: sodium acetate (38.00 mM), ammonium chloride (124.24 mM), yeast extract (0.46 g/L), urea (333 mM), and nickel chloride (0.01 mM), and the pH was 8.75. After the calcareous sand was treated with the optimal stimulation scheme, the urease activity was 6.1891 mM urea/min, the calcium carbonate production was 8.40%, and the UCS was 770 kPa, which constituted increases of 71.41%, 35.40%, and 83.33%, respectively, compared with the initial scheme. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that calcium carbonate crystals were formed between the particles of the calcareous sand after the reaction, and the calcium carbonate crystals were mainly calcite. Urease-producing microorganisms became the dominant species in calcareous sand after treatment. In recent years, it was shown that itaconic acid can be produced from glucose with Ustilago strains at up to maximum theoretical yield. The use of acetate and formate as co-feedstocks can boost the efficiency of itaconate production with Ustilaginaceae wild-type strains by reducing the glucose amount and thus the agricultural land required for the biotechnological production of this chemical. Metabolically engineered strains (U. cynodontis Δfuz7 Δcyp3 ↑Pria1 and U. cynodontis Δfuz7 Δcyp3 PetefmttA ↑Pria1) were applied in itaconate production, obtaining a titer of 56.1 g L−1 and a yield of 0.55 gitaconate per gsubstrate. Both improved titer and yield (increase of 5.2 g L−1 and 0.04 gitaconate per gsubstrate, respectively) were achieved when using sodium formate as an auxiliary substrate. By applying the design-of-experiments (DoE) methodology, cultivation parameters (glucose, sodium formate and ammonium chloride concentrations) were optimized, resulting in two empirical models predicting itaconate titer and yield for U. cynodontis Δfuz7 Δcyp3 PetefmttA ↑Pria1. Thereby, an almost doubled itaconate titer of 138 g L−1 was obtained and a yield of 0.62 gitaconate per gsubstrate was reached during confirmation experiments corresponding to 86% of the theoretical maximum. In order to close the carbon cycle by production of the co-feed via a "power-to-X" route, the biphasic Ru-catalysed hydrogenation of CO2 to formate could be integrated into the bioprocess directly using the obtained aqueous solution of formates as co-feedstock without any purification steps, demonstrating the (bio)compatibility of the two processes. The fragile paper is treated to improve the stability and appearance of the paper artifact, such as washing, lining, deacidification, and reinforcement. During the above treatments, paper documents inevitably make contact with water directly, leading to the appearance change, stability decrease, and migration or fading of anionic water-sensitive dyes, which are seriously harmful to information security. Herein, Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) nanoparticles were employed for the reinforcement and concomitant inhibition of anionic water-sensitive dye migration on fragile paper. HACC nanoparticles were prepared through physical ball grinding method and characterized via LPSA, SEM, TEM, XRD and FTIR. To evaluate the protective potential of HACC nanoparticles coating, the chemical and mechanical properties of coated and uncoated papers were evaluated after dry heat and hygrothermal accelerated aging. Additionally, good color stability of anionic water-sensitive dyes was observed on the paper coated with HACC nanoparticles after lining technology. Finally, the interaction mechanism between the anionic water-sensitive dyes and HACC nanoparticles was analyzed using an ultraviolet spectrophotometer and FTIR. The as-proposed technique can provide technical support to improve the mechanical properties of fragile paper and enhance the anionic water-sensitive dyes stability in the aqueous phase. Among nitrogen-containing cationic electrolytes, diallyl quaternary ammonium salt is a typical monomer with the highest positive charge density, which has attracted the most attention, especially in the research on homopolymers and copolymers of dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), which occupy a very unique and important position. In order to improve the lipophilicity of substituted diallyl ammonium chloride monomers under the premise of high cationic charge density, the simplest, most direct, and most efficient structure design strategy was selected in this paper. Only one of the substituents on DMDAAC quaternary ammonium nitrogen was modified by alkyl; the substituents were propyl and amyl groups, and their corresponding monomers were methyl propyl diallyl ammonium chloride (MPDAAC) and methyl amyl diallyl ammonium chloride (MADAAC), respectively. The effect of substituent structure on the homopolymerization activity of methyl alkyl diallyl ammonium chloride was illustrated by quantum chemical calculation and homopolymerization rate determination experiments via ammonium persulfate (APS) as the initiator system. The results of quantum chemistry simulation showed that, with the finite increase in substituted alkyl chain length, the numerical values of the bond length and the charge distribution of methyl alkyl diallyl ammonium chloride monomer changed little, with the activation energy of the reactions in the following order: DMDAAC < MPDAAC < MADAAC. The polymerization activities measured by the dilatometer method were in the order DMDAAC > MPDAAC > MADAAC. The activation energies Ea of homopolymerization were 96.70 kJ/mol, 97.25 kJ/mol, and 100.23 kJ/mol, and the rate equation of homopolymerization of each monomer was obtained. After analyzing and comparing these results, it could be easily found that the electronic effect of substituent was not obvious, whereas the effect of the steric hindrance was dominant. The above studies have laid a good foundation for an understanding of the polymerization activity of methyl alkyl diallyl ammonium chloride monomers and the possibility of preparation and application of these polymers with high molecular weight. The paper presents a new method for evaluating the polarity and hydrophobicity of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on the measurement of the DES contact angle on glass. DESs consisting of benzoic acid derivatives and quaternary ammonium chlorides–tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) and benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride (16-BAC)—in selected molar ratios were chosen for the study. To investigate the DESs polarity, an optical goniometer and an E T (30) solvatochromic scale based on Reichardt's dye were used. The research demonstrated the high accuracy and precision of the developed procedure. Sustainable fabrication of protective cotton, using bio-extracts, is becoming increasingly attractive. However, many shortcomings—including the introduction of potentially hazardous mordants or modifiers to cotton, annoying colour changes after finishing, and low processing efficiency—require further melioration. Therefore, an efficient ultrasonic-assisted colourless finishing process was developed in this study, to fabricate ultraviolet-proof and antimicrobial cotton. A pair of oppositely charged bio-based substances, i.e., tannin acid (TA) and hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) were introduced during the ultrasonic process. The results reveal that cationic HACC significantly promotes the adsorption of TA to cotton. The apparent colour of the cotton remained almost unchanged after finishing. Based on Pesudo first-/second-order kinetic models, chemisorption was verified as the dominant mechanism. Efficiency under ultrasound was enhanced by 5.3% (70 °C) and 27% (90 °C), respectively. A mathematical modelling study established the factors to be in the following order of significance: concentration > pH > temperature. Under optimal conditions, a theoretical maximum UPF of 380.8 was achieved. TA (8 g/L)-treated cotton deactivated up to 98% of Escherichia coli, and also provided excellent UV-shielding performance. In general, the ultrasonic-assisted eco-dyeing and finishing process for cotton was explored in depth from practical and theoretical perspectives, which should push forward the development of the sustainable textile industry. It is known that ammonium has a higher permeability through anion exchange and bipolar membranes compared to K+ cation that has the same mobility in water. However, the mechanism of this high permeability is not clear enough. In this study, we develop a mathematical model based on the Nernst–Planck and Poisson's equations for the diffusion of ammonium chloride through an anion-exchange membrane; proton-exchange reactions between ammonium, water and ammonia are taken into account. It is assumed that ammonium, chloride and OH− ions can only pass through membrane hydrophilic pores, while ammonia can also dissolve in membrane matrix fragments not containing water and diffuse through these fragments. It is found that due to the Donnan exclusion of H+ ions as coions, the pH in the membrane internal solution increases when approaching the membrane side facing distilled water. Consequently, there is a change in the principal nitrogen-atom carrier in the membrane: in the part close to the side facing the feed NH4Cl solution (pH < 8.8), it is the NH4+ cation, and in the part close to distilled water, NH3 molecules. The concentration of NH4+ reaches almost zero at a point close to the middle of the membrane cross-section, which approximately halves the effective thickness of the diffusion layer for the transport of this ion. When NH3 takes over the nitrogen transport, it only needs to pass through the other half of the membrane. Leaving the membrane, it captures an H+ ion from water, and the released OH− moves towards the membrane side facing the feed solution to meet the NH4+ ions. Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) hydrogel, formed via physically electrostatic crosslinks between polyanion and polycation, is an interesting hydrogel in terms of its nontoxicity and solvent-free technique. In this work, poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/poly (diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) complex hydrogels were prepared. Firstly, the PSS/PDADMAC complex aggregates using various PSS/PDADMAC mole fractions that were prepared in the presence of NaCl solution. Then, the aggregates were resolubilized under stirring at 70 °C for 2 h to obtain a homogeneous PEC solution. Finally, the PEC solution was dialyzed using a dialysis membrane with 3500 molecular cut-off for 1 day. The dialysis bath was changed every interval period of 2 h to control the rate of reversible electrostatic interaction, resulting in the homogenous PEC hydrogel with porous morphology as revealed by SEM and BET investigations. The dimensional stability and viscoelasticity of the PEC hydrogel was studied by DMA experiment, which showed the viscoelastic behavior at a compressive force ranging from 0 to 0.1 N. Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) is one of the most important water-soluble chitosan derivatives; its derivatives have gained growing attention due to their potential biomedical applications. Here, hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chitosan derivatives bearing thioctate (HACTs), with different degrees of substitution of thioctate, were prepared using HACC and α-lipoic acid as the reaction precursors, using an ion exchange method. The structural characteristics of the synthesized derivatives were confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In addition, their antioxidant behaviors were also investigated in vitro by the assays of reducing power, and scavenging activities against hydroxyl radicals and DPPH radicals. The antioxidant assay indicated that HACTs displayed strong antioxidant activity compared with HACC, especially in terms of reducing power. Besides, the antioxidant activities of the prepared products were further enhanced with the increase in the test concentration and the degrees of substitution of thioctate. At the maximum test concentration of 1.60 mg/mL, the absorbance value at 700 nm of HACTs, under the test conditions, was 4.346 ± 0.296, while the absorbance value of HACC was 0.041 ± 0.007. Concrete tanks, in coke wastewater treatment plants, are exposed to aggressive wastewater with high ammonium and chloride content, deteriorating the concrete binder. Due to this, toxic compounds may migrate to the environment. The results of the experimental work presented confirmed the changes in the phase, microstructure and concentration of chlorides caused by the penetration of NH4Cl into the hardened cement paste in dry conditions. Geochemical modeling of the interactions between the aggressive solution, the cement stone matrix and the pore water was performed in order to track the destruction process effects. (1) Background: Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a newly emerged enteric virus affecting pig breeding industries worldwide, and its pathogenic mechanism remains unclear. (2) Methods: In this study, we preliminarily identified the endocytic pathway of PDCoV in PK-15 cells, using six chemical inhibitors (targeting clathrin-mediated endocytosis, caveolae-mediated endocytosis, macropinocytosis pathway and endosomal acidification), overexpression of dominant-negative (DN) mutants to treat PK-15 cells and proteins knockdown. (3) Results: The results revealed that PDCoV entry was not affected after treatment with chlorpromazine (CPZ), 5-(N-ethyl-N-isopropyl) amiloride (EIPA)or ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), indicating that the entry of PDCoV into PK-15 cells were clathrin-, micropinocytosis-, PH-independent endocytosis. Conversely, PDCoV infection was sensitive to nystatin, dynasore and methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) with reduced PDCoV internalization, indicating that entry of PDCoV into PK-15 cells was caveolae-mediated endocytosis that required dynamin and cholesterol; indirect immunofluorescence and shRNA interference further validated these results. (4) Conclusions: In conclusion, PDCoV entry into PK-15 cells depends on caveolae-mediated endocytosis, which requires cholesterol and dynamin. Our finding is the first initial identification of the endocytic pathway of PDCoV in PK-15 cells, providing a theoretical basis for an in-depth understanding of the pathogenic mechanism of PDCoV and the design of new antiviral targets. A novel generation of gels based on medium chain length poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s, mcl-PHAs, were developed by using ionic interactions. First, water soluble mcl-PHAs containing sulfonate groups were obtained by thiol-ene reaction in the presence of sodium-3-mercapto-1-ethanesulfonate. Anionic PHAs were physically crosslinked by divalent inorganic cations Ca2+, Ba2+, Mg2+ or by ammonium derivatives of gallic acid GA-N(CH3)3+ or tannic acid TA-N(CH3)3+. The ammonium derivatives were designed through the chemical modification of gallic acid GA or tannic acid TA with glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (GTMA). The results clearly demonstrated that the formation of the networks depends on the nature of the cations. A low viscoelastic network having an elastic around 40 Pa is formed in the presence of Ca2+. Although the gel formation is not possible in the presence of GA-N(CH3)3+, the mechanical properties increased in the presence of TA-N(CH3)3+ with an elastic modulus G' around 4200 Pa. The PHOSO3-/TA-N(CH3)3+ gels having antioxidant activity, due to the presence of tannic acid, remained stable for at least 5 months. New chitosan derivatives modified with (3-carboxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (1) and coupled with (OC-6-44)-diammine(4-carboxypropanoato)dichloridoethanolatoplatinum(IV) (2), were synthesized and their preliminary biological evaluation carried out in human tumor cells. Some of these derivatives were also loaded with a chelating ligand (3) that was derived from bis(quinolin-2-ylmethyl)amine to obtain chitosan-based nanoparticles for an EPR-mediated delivery of Pt(IV) prodrugs and Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes (4), to explore a multimodal theranostic approach to cancer. The cytotoxicity of the different chitosan conjugates (C12, C123, and C1234), carrying different combinations of the Pt(IV) complex, the chelator and the Re(I) complex, was evaluated in the A2780 human ovarian cancer cell line using the MTT assay. The Pt(IV)-containing nanosystems showed low to moderate cytotoxic activity (IC50 values in the range 13.5-33.7 μM) and was comparable to that found for the free Pt(IV) complex (IC50 = 13.7 μM). Therefore, the Pt(IV)-chitosan conjugation did not enhance the cytotoxic activity of the Pt(IV) prodrug, which certainly reflects the inefficient cellular uptake of the nanoconjugates. Nevertheless, a clearer view of their potential for the delivery of anticancer agents requires further in vivo tests because the EPR effect increases extravasation and retention within the tumor tissue, not necessarily within the tumor cells. A novel poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) composite nanofiber wound dressing was prepared through electrospinning and the entrapment-graft technique as an antibacterial dressing for cutaneous wound healing. HACC with 30% degrees of substitution (DS) was immobilized onto the surface of PLGA membranes via the reaction between carboxyl groups in PLGA after alkali treatment and the reactive groups (-NH2) in HACC molecules. The naked PLGA and chitosan graft PLGA (PLGA-CS) membranes served as controls. The surface immobilization was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). The morphology studies showed that the membranes remain uniform after the immobilization process. The effects of the surface modification by HACC and CS on the biological properties of the membranes were also investigated. Compared with PLGA and PLGA-CS, PLGA-HACC exhibited more effective antibacterial activity towards both Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (P. aeruginosa) bacteria. The newly developed fibrous membranes were evaluated in vitro for their cytotoxicity using human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) and human keratinocytes (HaCaTs) and in vivo using a wound healing mice model. It was revealed that PLGA-HACC fibrous membranes exhibited favorable cytocompatibility and significantly stimulated adhesion, spreading and proliferation of HDFs and HaCaTs. PLGA-HACC exhibited excellent wound healing efficacy, which was confirmed using a full thickness excision wound model in S. aureus-infected mice. Avian infectious bronchitis has caused huge economic losses in the poultry industry. Previous studies have reported that infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) infection can produce cytopathic effects (CPE) and apoptosis in some mammalian cells and primary cells. However, there is little research on IBV-induced immune cell apoptosis. In this study, chicken macrophage HD11 cells were established as a cellular model that is permissive to IBV infection. Then, IBV-induced apoptosis was observed through a cell viability assay, morphological changes, and flow cytometry. The activity of caspases, the inhibitory efficacy of caspase-inhibitors and the expression of apoptotic genes further suggested the activation of apoptosis through both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways in IBV-infected HD11 cells. Additionally, ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) pretreated HD11 cells blocked IBV from entering cells and inhibited IBV-induced apoptosis. UV-inactivated IBV also lost the ability of apoptosis induction. IBV replication was increased by blocking caspase activation. This study presents a chicken macrophage cell line that will enable further analysis of IBV infection and offers novel insights into the mechanisms of IBV-induced apoptosis in immune cells. The effect of microwave-supported leaching of electric arc furnace (EAF) slag by ammonium salts was investigated to improve calcium leaching ratio for CO2 mineral sequestration process. The results show that the calcium leaching ratio from EAF slag at the constant temperature in the microwave field increases about 10% than that under the water bath at the same leaching time. The greater the microwave power, the higher the impact of calcium leaching rate, which proves that microwave treatment can improve the leaching ratio of calcium. The rapid calcium leaching step (up to 5 min) is possibly due to the easy reaction of calcium silicate, while the slower calcium leaching step (after 5 min) is owing to the difficult reaction of calcium ferroaluminates for the hydrolysis of iron and aluminum. The leaching behaviors of magnesium and calcium ions affected by different leaching parameters are similar and the concentration of aluminum, iron and phosphorus can be neglected. Calcium ion is probably not precipitated in the real leaching solution from steel slag by ammonium chloride solution as its concentration is less than 0.32 mol/L. However, the concentration of magnesium ion starts to drop sharply when the pH value is higher than 10 and it has precipitated completely at pH value of 11.6. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cationic polyacrylamides have been employed widely to improve sludge dewatering performance, but the cationic units are randomly distributed in the molecular chain, which restricts the further enhancement of dewaterability. Common template technology to prepare block copolymers requiring a huge number of templates reduces the polymer purity and molecular weight. Here, we adopted the surface-active monomer benzyl dimethyl 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl ammonium chloride (BDMDAC) to synthesize cationic microblocky polyacrylamide initiated by ultrasound. The reactivity ratio of monomers suggested that novel cationic monomer BDMDAC had higher homopolymerization ability, and was thus more prone to forming a microblock structure. The statistical analysis of sequence-length distribution indicated that the number and length of cationic segments increased in the PAB molecules. In addition, the characteristic results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) provided evidence for the synthesis of copolymer with cationic microblocks. Finally, the results of dewatering tests demonstrated that sludge dewaterability was greatly improved by adding the synthesized novel flocculants, and the sludge-specific resistance to filtration, filter cake moisture content and residual turbidity all reached a minimum (68.7%, 5.4 × 1012 m·kg-1, and 2.6 NTU, respectively) at 40 mg·L-1. The PAB flocs were large, compact, difficult to break, and easy to regrow. Furthermore, PAB was more effective in the removal of protein from soluble extracellular polymeric substances (SEPSs). The effects of Ca2+ ions on the flotation of sillimanite using dodecylammonium chloride as a collector were investigated by micro-flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, solution chemistry analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The micro-flotation results indicated that Ca2+ ions remarkably inhibit the flotation of sillimanite in the pH range of 2.0-9.0. The point of zero charge (PZC) of sillimanite changed from 5.4 to 6.1 with the addition of Ca2+ ions. Meanwhile, the calculated concentration of RNH3+ in the sillimanite interface layer decreased in the presence of Ca2+ ions. The results of MD simulation revealed that Ca2+ ions have strong binding energy with the sillimanite (010) surface, and the binding energy of RNH3+ with sillimanite (010) surface reduced in the presence of Ca2+ ions. The delamination of montmorillonite in water leads to sliming in ore slurry, which is detrimental to mineral flotation and solid/water separation. In this work, the delamination of Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) has been restrained by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (1831) through the adsorption on the edge of the mineral. The experimental results have shown that the pretreatment by adding SDS and 1831 could greatly reduce the Stokes size percentage of -1.1 μm particles in the aqueous Na-MMT suspension. From the X-ray diffractometer (XRD) results, the interlayer spacing of the MMT pre-treated by SDS and 1831 is smaller than that of original MMT particles. Adsorption position of SDS and 1831 on MMT surfaces was analyzed by the measurements of adsorption capacity of SDS and 1831, inductively-coupled plasma spectra, and zeta potential before and after the plane surface of MMT was covered with tetraethylenepentaminecopper ([Cu(tetren)]2+). The results indicated that SDS and 1831 are adsorbed on the edge and the whole surface of Na-MMT, respectively. Titania nanotube-based local drug delivery is an attractive strategy for combating implant-associated infection. In our previous study, we demonstrated that the gentamicin-loaded nanotubes could dramatically inhibit bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on implant surfaces. Considering the overuse of antibiotics may lead to the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, we synthesized a new quaternized chitosan derivative (hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan, HACC) with a 27% degree of substitution (DS; referred to as 27% HACC) that had a strong antibacterial activity and simultaneously good biocompatibility with osteogenic cells. Titania nanotubes with various diameters (80, 120, 160, and 200 nm) and 200 nm length were loaded with 2 mg of HACC using a lyophilization method and vacuum drying. Two standard strain, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (American Type Culture Collection 43300) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (American Type Culture Collection 35984), and two clinical isolates, S. aureus 376 and S. epidermidis 389, were selected to investigate the bacterial adhesion at 6 h and biofilm formation at 24, 48, and 72 h on the HACC-loaded nanotubes (NT-H) using the spread plate method, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Smooth titanium (Smooth Ti) was also investigated and compared. We found that NT-H could significantly inhibit bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on its surface compared with Smooth Ti, and the NT-H with 160 nm and 200 nm diameters had stronger antibacterial activity because of the extended HACC release time of NT-H with larger diameters. The present work reports the synthesis and complexation properties of five mixed bridge P=O/P=S cavitands toward N,N-methyl butyl ammonium chloride (1) as prototype guest. The influence of number and position of P=O and P=S groups on the affinity of phosphonate cavitands toward 1 is assessed via ITC titrations in DCE as solvent. Comparison of the resulting Kass values, the enthalpic and entropic contributions to the overall binding with those of the parent tetraphosphonate Tiiii and tetrathiophosphonate TSiiii cavitands allows one to single out the simultaneous dual H-bond between the cavitand and the salt as the major player in complexation. The zeolite clinoptilolite (CLI) is known to be a very good ion exchanger, as it consists of a three-dimensional structure formed of AlO4− and SiO4 tetrahedral, which are connected by a common oxygen atom. The micropores formed by this structure (with free diameters in the range of 0.40 nm and 0.72 nm) are fine enough to allow cations and water molecules to enter and be exchanged. CLI is a suitable, inexpensive, and globally available material for removing ammonium from highly-concentrated wastewater and is proven to be selective in ammonium uptake and regeneration since no effect of the provenance of the ammonium (matrix-free NH4Cl solution or sludge water) could be found. However, regeneration of the clinoptilolite is necessary to recover the adsorbed ammonium for further use and restore its capability for ion exchange. Within this work, the method by which clinoptilolite, loaded with ammonium (q = 8.1–16.6 mg/g) from different sludge waters and ammonium chloride solution, can be regenerated to yield a stoichiometric ammonium sulfate solution (ASS), that could be used, e.g., as a fertilizer, was investigated. A regeneration solution containing Na2SO4 (0.25 n(Na2SO4)/n(NH4+ads)) with a varying NaOH ratio (0–2.14 n(NaOH)/n(NH4+ads)) was tested. To obtain a high ammonium concentration in the eluate, a large mass fraction ω of 284 g/kg of CLI in the regeneration solution was applied. The effects of different ammonium loads, different origins of the ammonium, and residual moisture on the necessary components of the regeneration solution, in which an ASS is obtained within a contact time of 10 min at 22 °C, were studied. A stoichiometric ASS from CLI loaded up to a maximum of 13.5 mg/g was obtained with a mixture of 0.25 n(Na2SO4)/n(NH4+ads) together with 0.8–1.0 n(NaOH)/n(NH4+ads) for dry CLI, and 0.75 n(NaOH)/n(NH4+ads) for CLI with residual moisture. The paper describes hydrometallurgical methods to recycle wastes of vanadium pentoxide chemical fabrication. Sludges containing a significant amount of V2O5 can be considered as an additional source of raw materials for vanadium production. We studied the one-stage leaching method using various iron-based reductants for converting V5+ to V4+ in a solution allowing to precipitate V when its concentration in the solution is low. As a result of the reduction leaching with further precipitation, we obtained concentrates with V2O5 content of 22–26% and a high amount of harmful impurities. Multistage counterflow leaching can be used to fabricate solutions with vanadium pentoxide concentration suitable for vanadium precipitation by hydrolysis and adding ammonium salts. The solutions with V2O5 content of ≈15 g/L can be obtained from the initial sludge by three-stage counterflow vanadium leaching. A concentrate with a content of 78 wt% V2O5 can be precipitated from these solutions at pH = 2.4 by adding ammonium chloride. Additionally, concentrate with V2O5 content of ≈94 wt% was precipitated from the solution with a concentration of >20 g/L V2O5 obtained from the roasted sludge. The concentrates were purified for increasing the vanadium content to 5–7%. The consumption and technological parameters of the considered processes are presented in the paper. The corrosion failure of the high-pressure heat exchanger in a petrochemical enterprise was simulated. A multiphase flow and heat and mass transfer simulation shows that the vortex core with a higher gas phase content and lower temperature is the region of easy crystallization, located on both sides of the center of the tube. The crystallization process occurs in the gas phase. As the reaction progresses, the crystallization range spreads from the tube wall to the center of the tube bundle, and the inner diameter of the tube bundle decreases continuously. In Fluent, a user-defined function, based on the ammonium chloride crystallization reaction, is loaded. The results show that crystallization first occurs in the tube bundles on both sides of the center of the tube and that the corrosion is aggravated by the erosion wall surface of crystal particles at the elbow, which is consistent with the actual corrosion failure location. Herein, a novel chitosan derivative nanoparticle was proposed to function as a delivery carrier. First of all, an improvement was made to the way N-2-hydroxypropyl trimcthyl ammonium chloride chitosan (N-2-HACC) was synthesized. Moreover, the solution to one-step synthesis of N-2-HACC from chitosan (CS) was developed. Different from the previous report, the synthesis process was simplified, and there was a reduction in the amount of 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (EPTAC) used. With its excellent water solubility maintained, the relatively low degree of substitution was controlled to facilitate the cross-linking reaction. The results obtained from 1H-NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, and XRD indicated a smooth EPTAC onto CS for the formation of N-2-HACC with 59.33% the degree of substitution (DS). According to our results, N-2-HACC could be dissolved in various organic solvents, deionized water, 1% acetic acid aqueous solution, and others at room temperature. Finally, a novel chitosan nanoparticle material was prepared using the self-assembly method with β-glycerophosphate sodium (β-GC), with excellent immune properties achieved, thus providing a new strategy for chitosan self-assembled nanoparticles. The identification of microorganisms directly from blood cultures using MALDI-TOF MS has been shown to be the most impacting application of this methodology. In this study, a novel commercial method was evaluated in four clinical microbiology laboratories. Positive blood culture samples (n = 801) were processed using a rapid BACpro® II kit and then compared with the routine gold standard. A subset of monomicrobial BCs (n = 560) were analyzed in parallel with a Sepsityper® Kit (Bruker Daltonics, Bremen, Germany) and compared with the rapid BACpro® II kit. In addition, this kit was also compared with two different in-house methods. Overall, 80.0% of the monomicrobial isolates (609/761; 95% CI 71.5–88.5) were correctly identified by the rapid BACpro® II kit at the species level (92.3% of the Gram negative and 72.4% of the Gram positive bacteria). The comparison with the Sepsityper® Kit showed that the rapid BACpro® II kit generated higher rates of correct species-level identification for all categories (p > 0.0001), except for yeasts identified with score values > 1.7. It also proved superior to the ammonium chloride method (p > 0.0001), but the differential centrifugation method allowed for higher rates of correct identification for Gram negative bacteria (p > 0.1). The present paper describes a new way of obtaining an efficient adsorbent material by functionalization of Mg3Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) with methyl trialkyl ammonium chloride-ionic liquid (IL) using two methods: ultrasound and cosynthesis. Layered double hydroxides are good solid support for the functionalization with ionic liquids due to their well-ordered structure. The immobilization of the ILs in suitable solid supports combine the advantages of the ILs with the properties of the solid supports bringing more benefits such as use of lower quantity of ILs and avoiding of ILs loss in the aqua phase which overall decrease the treatment costs. In case of ultrasound method of functionalization is assured a uniform distribution of IL on the solid surface, but through immobilization by cosynthesis due to the tunable properties of LDH, is assured an intercalation of the ILs between the LDH layers. This fact was highlighted by the X-ray diffraction (RXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the obtained adsorbent. The added value brought by the functionalization of Mg3Al with the studied IL was underlined by the adsorption studies conducted in the treatment process of water with diclofenac content. Kinetic, thermodynamic, and equilibrium studies were performed. DCF adsorption onto the studied materials correspond to a chemisorption, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model describing the most accurately the experimental data. DCF adsorption onto the studied materials occurs as a heterogeneous process, with the experimental data fitting best with the SIPS isotherm.
