The increasing demand for high-performance and low-power hardware in artificial intelligence (AI) applications, such as speech recognition, facial recognition, and object detection, has driven the exploration of advanced memory designs. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and deep neural networks (DNNs) require intensive computational resources, leading to memory access times and power consumption challenges. To address these challenges, we propose the application of computing-in-memory (CIM) within FinFET-based 8T SRAM structures, specifically utilizing P-latch N-access (PLNA) and single-ended (SE) configurations. Our design significantly reduces power consumption by up to 56% in the PLNA configuration and 60% in the SEconfiguration compared to traditional FinFET SRAM designs. These reductions are achieved while maintaining competitive delay performance, making our approach a promising solution for implementing efficient and low-power AI hardware. Detailed simulations in 7 nm FinFET technology underscore the potential of these CIM-based SRAM structures in overcoming the computational bottlenecks associated with DNNs and CNNs. Amyloidosis with cardiac involvement is a fatal disease leading to progressive heart failure. The most common forms of amyloidosis with cardiac involvement are light chain (AL) and transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis. To allow effective specific treatment for both forms, precise and early diagnosis is important. This review focuses on diagnostic approaches for AL and ATTR amyloidosis with cardiac involvement, including different strategies, the role of imaging and biomarkers and possible pitfalls. Aluminum (Al) ion implantation is one of the most important technologies in SiC device manufacturing processes due to its ability to produce the p-type doping effect, which is essential to building p–n junctions and blocking high voltages. However, besides the doping effect, defects are also probably induced by the implantation. Here, the impacts of Al ion implantation-induced defects on 4H-SiC MOSFET channel transport behaviors are studied using a multiscale simulation flow, including the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, density functional theory (DFT) calculation, and tight-binding (TB) model-based quantum transport simulation. The simulation results show that an Al ion can not only replace a Si lattice site to realize the p-doping effect, but it can also replace the C lattice site to induce mid-gap trap levels or become an interstitial to induce the n-doping effect. Moreover, the implantation tends to bring additional point defects to the 4H-SiC body region near the Al ions, which will lead to more complicated coupling effects between them, such as degrading the p-type doping effect by trapping free hole carriers and inducing new trap states at the 4H-SiC bandgap. The quantum transport simulations indicate that these coupling effects will impede local electron transports, compensating for the doping effect and increasing the leakage current of the 4H-SiC MOSFET. In this study, the complicated coupling effects between the implanted Al ions and the implantation-induced point defects are revealed, which provides new references for experiments to increase the accepter activation rate and restrain the defect effect in SiC devices. Aluminum (Al) and its alloys are widely used in various fields due to their excellent physical properties. Although many efforts have been made to fabricate an Al-based composite, they usually results in a significant decrease in electrical conductivity. Herein, a special layer-structured Al/graphene (Gr)/Al composite was successfully designed and fabricated through a facile method using the ultrasonic spraying of graphene powder with alumina removal and a subsequent vacuum hot-pressing process. The as-obtained Al/Gr/Al composite presents a significantly enhanced electrical conductivity of 66% IACS, which is much higher than that of other reported Al-based composites, while it still maintains similar mechanical properties. Cardiac amyloidosis, a condition characterized by abnormal protein deposition in the heart, leads to restrictive cardiomyopathy and is notably associated with an increased risk of arrhythmias and conduction disorders. This article reviews the current understanding and management strategies for these cardiac complications, with a focus on recent advancements and clinical challenges. The prevalence and impact of atrial arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation, are examined, along with considerations for stroke risk and anticoagulation therapy. The article also addresses the complexities of managing rate and rhythm control, outlining the utility and limitations of pharmacological agents and interventions such as catheter ablation. Furthermore, it reviews the challenges in the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias, including the contentious use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators for primary and secondary prevention. Individualized approaches, considering the unique characteristics of cardiac amyloidosis, are paramount. SiMo ductile cast iron combines ease of part fabrication with good mechanical properties, including a usable plasticity range. Its poor corrosion resistance inherited from grey cast iron could be alleviated through alloying with Al or Cr additions capable of forming a dense oxide scale protecting the substrate. However, the presence of Al and Cr in cast iron tends to make the material brittle, and their optimum alloying additions need to be studied further. The present work was aimed at investigating the effect of crystallization rates on microstructure changes during directional crystallization of SiMo-type alloys with up to 3.5% Al and 2.4% Cr. The experiment was performed using the Bridgman–Stockbarger method. The tubular crucible was transferred from the hot section to cold section at rates ranging from 5 mm/h to 30 mm/h with a 4/5 crucible length and then quenched. The introduced Al promoted graphitization up to a point, wherein, at the highest applied addition, the graphite precipitation preceded crystallization of the rest of the melt. A rising level of Cr in these alloys from 1% to 2.4% resulted in the formation of low and high contents of pearlite, respectively. The higher crystallization rates proved effective in increasing the ferrite content at the expense of pearlite. In the investigated cast iron samples with smaller applied alloying additions, Widmanstätten ferrite or ausferrite, i.e., fine acircular phase, were often found. The switch from directional crystallization to quenching caused a transition from a liquid to solid state, which started with nucleation of islands of fine austenite dendrites with chunky graphite eutectic separating them. As these islands expanded, they pushed alloying additions to their sides, promoting carbide or pearlite formation in these places and forming a super-cell-like structure. The performed experiments helped gather information concerning the sensitivity of the microstructure of SiMo cast iron modified with Al and Cr to crystallization rates prevailing in heavy cast structures. Background and Objectives: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging has become an essential instrument in the study of cardiomyopathies; it has recently been integrated into the diagnostic workflow for cardiac amyloidosis (CA) with remarkable results. An additional emerging role is the stratification of the arrhythmogenic risk by scar analysis and the possibility of merging these data with electro-anatomical maps. This is made possible by using a software (ADAS 3D, Galgo Medical, Barcelona, Spain) able to provide 3D heart models by detecting fibrosis along the whole thickness of the myocardial walls. Little is known regarding the applications of this software in the wide spectrum of cardiomyopathies and the potential benefits have yet to be discovered. In this study, we tried to apply the ADAS 3D in the context of CA. Materials and Methods: This study was a retrospectively analysis of consecutive CMR imaging of patients affected by CA that were treated in our center (Marche University Hospital). Wherever possible, the data were processed with the ADAS 3D software and analyzed for a correlation between the morphometric parameters and follow-up events. The outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality, unplanned cardiovascular hospitalizations, sustained ventricular arrhythmias (VAs), permanent reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction, and pacemaker implantation. The secondary outcomes were the need for a pacemaker implantation and sustained VAs. Results: A total of 14 patients were deemed eligible for the software analysis: 8 patients with wild type transthyretin CA, 5 with light chain CA, and 1 with transthyretin hereditary CA. The vast majority of imaging features was not related to the composite outcome, but atrial wall thickening displayed a significant association with both the primary (p = 0.003) and the secondary outcome of pacemaker implantation (p = 0.003). The software was able to differentiate between core zones and border zones of scars, with the latter being the most extensively represented in all patients. Interestingly, in a huge percentage of CMR images, the software identified the highest degree of core zone fibrosis among the epicardial layers and, in those patients, we found a higher incidence of the primary outcome, without reaching statistical significance (p = 0.18). Channels were found in the scar zones in a substantial percentage of patients without a clear correlation with follow-up events. Conclusions: CMR imaging plays a pivotal role in cardiovascular diagnostics. Our analysis shows the feasibility and applicability of such instrument for all types of CA. We could not only differentiate between different layers of scars, but we were also able to identify the presence of fibrosis channels among the different scar zones. None of the data derived from the ADAS 3D software seemed to be related to cardiac events in the follow-up, but this might be imputable to the restricted number of patients enrolled in the study. Coal gangue (CG) and coal gasification coarse slag (CGCS) possess both hazardous and resourceful attributes. The present study employed co-roasting followed by H2SO4 leaching to extract Al and Fe from CG and CGCS. The activation behavior and phase transformation mechanism during the co-roasting process were investigated through TG, XRD, FTIR, and XPS characterization analysis as well as Gibbs free energy calculation. The results demonstrate that the leaching rate of total iron (TFe) reached 79.93%, and Al3+ achieved 43.78% under the optimized experimental conditions (co-roasting process: CG/CGCS mass ratio of 8/2, 600 °C, 1 h; H2SO4 leaching process: 30 wt% H2SO4, 90 °C, 5 h, liquid to solid ratio of 5:1 mL/g). Co-roasting induced the conversion of inert kaolinite to active metakaolinite, subsequently leading to the formation of sillimanite (Al2SiO5) and hercynite (FeAl2O4). The iron phases underwent a selective transformation in the following sequence: hematite (Fe2O3) → magnetite (Fe3O4) → wustite (FeO) → ferrosilite (FeSiO3), hercynite (FeAl2O4), and fayalite (Fe2SiO4). Furthermore, we found that acid solution and leached residue both have broad application prospects. Growing interest has accrued in the co-existence of cardiac amyloidosis and valvular heart disease. Amyloid infiltration from either transthyretin (ATTR) or of light chain (AL) origin may affect any structure of the heart, including the valves. The recent literature has mainly focused on aortic stenosis and cardiac amyloidosis, improving our understanding of the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of this dual pathology. Despite being of high clinical relevance, data on mitral/tricuspid regurgitation and cardiac amyloidosis are rather scarce and mostly limited to case reports and small cases series. It is the aim of this review article to summarize the current evidence of concomitant valvular heart disease and cardiac amyloidosis by including studies on epidemiology, diagnostic approaches, screening possibilities, therapeutic management, and prognostic implications. Electron-beam additive manufacturing is one of the most promising methods for creating complex metal parts and structures. Additive manufacturing has already gained wide acceptance in the creation of various constructions from aluminum, copper, titanium, and their alloys as well as different classes of steels and other metallic materials. However, there are still many challenges associated with the additive manufacturing and post-production processing of intermetallic alloys. Thus, it is currently an urgent task for research. In this work, heat-resistant intermetallic alloys based on nickel, aluminum, and chromium were produced by dual-wire electron-beam additive manufacturing using commercial NiCr and Al wires. The microstructure, phase composition, and microhardness of the intermetallic billets are strongly dependent on the ratio of NiCr and Al wires, which have been fed during the additive growth of the material (NiCr:Al = 3:1 and NiCr:Al = 1:3). A metal-matrix composite material (Al3Ni-based intermetallide in Al-based matrix) was fabricated using the NiCr:Al = 1:3 ratio of the wires during the deposition. In tension, it fractures in a brittle manner before the plastic deformation starts, and it possesses a high microhardness of 6–10 GPa with a high dispersion of the value (the mean value is 8.7 GPa). This is associated with the complex phase composition of the material and the high fraction of a brittle Al3Ni intermetallic phase. In the material, obtained with the ratio NiCr:Al = 3:1, the ordered Ni3Al(Cr) and disordered Ni3Cr(Al) intermetallides are the dominating phases. Its microhardness turned out to be lower (4.1 GPa) than that in Al + Al3Ni-based composite, but intermetallic Ni3Al-based alloy demonstrates good mechanical properties in a high-temperature deformation regime (650 MPa, more than 10% elongation at 873 K). Microstructural studies, analysis of phase composition, and tensile mechanical properties of additively produced intermetallic materials show the perspective of dual-wire electron-beam additive manufacturing for producing intermetallic compounds for high-temperature applications. New types of hybrid aluminum joints: Al-acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic polymer (CFRTP) designated Al/Ni-CFP/ABS, and Al-18-8 Stainless steel, Al/Ni-CFP/18-8, by Ni-plated carbon fiber plug (Ni-CFP) insert not before seen in the literature have been fabricated. The goal is to take advantage of extremely high ~6 mm CF surface area for high adhesion, to enhance the safety level of aircraft and other parts. This is without fasteners, chemical treatment, or glue. First, the CFP is plated with Ni. Second, the higher melting point half-length is spot welded to the CFP; and third, the remaining half-length is fabricated. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of Al/Ni-CFP/ABS was raised 15 times over that of Al/ABS. Normalized cUTS according to CFP cross-section by Rule of Mixtures for cAl/Ni-CFP/18-8 was raised over that of cAl/Ni-CFP/18-8 from 140 to 360 MPa. Resistance energy to tensile deformation, UT, was raised 12 times from Al/ABS to Al/Ni-CFP/ABS, and 6 times from Al/CFP/18-8 to Al/Ni-CFP/18-8. Spot welding allows rapid melting followed by rapid solidification for amorphous metal structures minimizing grain boundaries. The Ni-coating lowers or counters the effects of brittle Al4C3 and FexC formation at the interface and prevents damage by impingement to CFs, allowing joints to take on more of the load. Selenium (Se)-enriched tea is a well-regarded natural beverage that is often consumed for its Se supplementation benefits. However, the production of this tea, particularly in Se-abundant tea plantations, is challenging due to soil acidification. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of changes in Se under acidified soil conditions. Eight tea plantation soil monitoring sites in Southern Jiangsu were first selected. Simulated acid rain experiments and experiments with different acidification methods were designed and soil pH, as well as various Al-ion and Se-ion concentrations were systematically determined. The data were analyzed using R statistical software, and a correlation analysis was carried out. The results indicated that as the pH value dropped, exchangeable selenium (Exc-Se) and residual selenium (Res-Se) were transformed into acid-soluble selenium (Fmo-Se) and manganese oxide selenium (Om-Se). As the pH increased, exchange state aluminum (Alex) and water-soluble aluminum (Alw) decreased, Fmo-Se and Om-Se declined, and Exc-Se and Res-Se increased, a phenomenon attributed to the weakened substitution of Se ions by Al ions. In the simulated acid rain experiment, P1 compared to the control (CK), the pH value of the YJW tea plantation decreased by 0.13, Exc-Se decreased by 4 ug mg−1, Res-Se decreased by 54.65 ug kg−1, Fmo-Se increased by 2.78 ug mg−1, and Om-Se increased by 5.94 ug mg−1 while Alex increased by 28.53 mg kg−1. The decrease in pH led to an increase in the content of Alex and Alw, which further resulted in the conversion of Exc-Se to Fmo-Se and Om-Se. In various acidification experiments, compared with CK, the pH value of T6 decreased by 0.23, Exc-Se content decreased by 8.35 ug kg−1, Res-Se content decreased by 40.62 ug kg−1, and Fmo-Se content increased by 15.52 ug kg−1 while Alex increased by 33.67 mg kg−1, Alw increased by 1.7 mg kg−1, and Alh decreased by 573.89 mg kg−1. Acidification can trigger the conversion of Exc-Se to Fmo-Se and Om-Se, while the content of available Se may decrease due to the complexation interplay between Alex and Exc-Se. Tea, as a global nonalcoholic beverage, is widely consumed due to its economic, health and cultural importance. Polyploids have the ability to solve the problems of low yield, cold resistance and insect resistance in tea tree varieties. However, the response mechanism to aluminum and heavy metal remains unclear. In this study, the content of Al, Cu and Cd were measured in the leaves and roots of 'Qianmei 419' and 'Qianfu 4', respectively. The content of Al, Cd and Cu in the roots of the 'Qianmei 419' tea variety were significantly higher than in 'Qianfu 4' roots. Only the content of Cu in the leaves of the 'Qianmei 419' tea variety was significantly higher than that in the roots of the 'Qianfu 4' tea variety. Moreover, we found that the content of Al, Cu and Cd in the soil around the root of 'Qianfu 4' were higher than in the soil around the root of 'Qianmei 419'. RNA-seq was performed to identify the DEGs involved in the accumulation of Al, Cu and Cd between 'Qianmei 419' and 'Qianfu 4'. A total of 23,813 DEGs were identified in the triploid tea variety, including 16,459 upregulated DEGs and 7354 downregulated DEGs. Among them, by analyzing the expression levels of some metal transporter genes, it was found that most of the metal transporter genes were downregulated in the triploid tea plants. In short, through the analysis of transcriptome data and metal content, it was found that changes in metal transporter gene expression affect the accumulation of metals in tea plants. The effects of Al addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Sn-Mn-Ca alloys are studied in this paper. It was found that the Mg-6Sn-4Zn-1Mn-0.2Ca-xAl (ZTM641-0.2Ca-xAl, x = 0, 0.5, 1, 2 wt.%; hereafter, all compositions are in weight percent unless stated otherwise) alloys have α-Mg, Mg2Sn, Mg7Zn3, MgZn, α-Mn, CaMgSn, AlMn, Mg32(Al,Zn)49 phases. The grain is also refined when the Al element is added, and the angular-block AlMn phases are formed in the alloys. For the ZTM641-0.2Ca-xAl alloy, the higher Al content is beneficial to elongation, and the double-aged ZTM641-0.2Ca-2Al alloy has the highest elongation, which is 13.2%. The higher Al content enhances the high-temperature strength for the as-extruded ZTM641-0.2Ca alloy; overall, the as-extruded ZTM641-0.2Ca-2Al alloy has the best performance; that is, the tensile strength and yield strength of the ZTM641-0.2Ca-2Al alloy are 159 MPa and 132 MPa at 150 °C, and 103 MPa and 90 MPa at 200 °C, respectively. Fluoride pollution in water has been reported in many regions and countries. Adsorption is the most commonly used process for treating fluoride-containing water. For industrial applications, the treatment of a pollutant is normally performed in continuous column mode. In this work, batch and lab-scale column studies were conducted by applying modified granular activated carbon (MGAC) to remove fluoride (F−) from an aqueous solution. MGAC was prepared by a wet impregnation method and characterized using SEM and FTIR. Batch studies presented the adsorption of F− onto MGAC following the Freundlich model and the pseudo-second-order model, indicating the dominant adsorption was a multilayer adsorption and chemisorption process. The breakthrough time, exhaustion time, adsorption capacity, and adsorption efficiency in breakthrough curves were evaluated under varying influent F− concentrations, flow rates, and bed heights. Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and Yan models were employed to describe the whole breakthrough behavior, showing their suitability to predict the features of the breakthrough curves of the MGAC continuous flow system. In this study, a set of ZnO-based thin films were prepared on glass substrates at various substrate temperatures via the direct current magnetron sputtering of ceramic targets with the following compositions: pure ZnO, Al-doped ZnO with doping levels of 1 and 2 at.%, Ga-doped ZnO with doping levels of 1 and 2 at.%, and (Al, Ga)-co-doped ZnO with doping levels of 1 and 2 at.% for each impurity metal. The dependencies of sheet resistance, carrier concentration, and Hall mobility on the substrate temperature were studied for the deposited films. The results of evaluating the electrical performances of the films were compared with the data of their XRD study. According to the XRD data, among all the deposited ZnO films, the maximum crystallinity was found in the co-doped thin film with doping levels of 2 at.% for each impurity metal, deposited at a substrate temperature of 300 °C. It was revealed that the observed increase in the Hall mobility and carrier concentration for the co-doped films may, in particular, be due to the difference in the preferred localization of Ga and Al impurities in the ZnO film: the Ga ions were mainly incorporated into the crystal lattice of ZnO nanocrystallites, while the Al impurity was mostly localized in the intercrystalline space at the grain boundaries. Background: In cardiac amyloidosis, the prevalence of thromboembolic events and atrial fibrillation is higher in transthyretin amyloidosis compared to immunoglobulin light chain amyloidosis. Therefore, we hypothesize that transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis patients have worse atrial function. Purpose: To explore the left atrial function by conventional ultrasound and strain analysis in immunoglobulin light chain- and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis patients. Methods: In cardiac amyloidosis patients in our Amyloidosis Expert Center, echocardiographic strain analysis was performed using speckle tracking. Results: The data of 53 cardiac amyloidosis patients (83% male, mean age 70 years) were analyzed. Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis patients (n = 24, 45%) were older (75 ± 5.6 vs. 65 ± 7.2 years, p < 0.001) and had more left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy than immunoglobulin light chain cardiac amyloidosis patients (n = 29, 55%). However, LV systolic and diastolic function did not differ, nor did left atrial dimensions (LAVI 56(24) vs. 50(31) mL/m2). Left atrial reservoir strain was markedly lower in transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (7.4(6.2) vs. 13.6(14.7), p = 0.017). This association was independent of other measurements of the left atrial and ventricular function. Conclusions: Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis patients had lower left atrial reservoir function compared to immunoglobulin light chain cardiac amyloidosis patients although the left atrial geometry was similar. Interestingly, this association was independent of left atrial- and LV ejection fraction and global longitudinal strain. Further research is warranted to assess the impact of impaired left atrial dysfunction in transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis on atrial fibrillation burden and prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A high-temperature water steam (H2O(g)) between 300 °C and 1000 °C reacted with the Al surface in this study. The Al surface states were characterized and analyzed using XRD °C, XPS, and SEM after and before the reaction, and the effects and mechanism of H2O(g) on the Al surface morphology and chemical composition were studied. The experiment showed that for an Al sheet reacting with H2O(g), its oxide layer morphology changed from nano-needle to flaky and granular oxides gradually with the rise of temperature, and finally the Al surface became porous as a whole. Its oxide crystals were amorphous and were determined to be aluminum oxide (Al2O3) using XPS. The needle-like oxide in the Al sheet surface tended to grow toward the surface, and no obviously inward oxidizing corrosion layer occurred in the aluminum substrate; the oxide layer between the oxide and Al sheet substrate was compact, and could effectively prevent the infiltration and corrosion of water molecules. Aluminium-matrix composite is one of the most preferred engineering materials and is known for its potential benefits, such as lightweight nature, high specific stiffness, superior strength, machinability, etc. The metal–matrix composites are very attractive for critical applications: Aerospace field, defense deployments, automotive sector, marine industry. In the present work, novel Physella Acuta Snail Shell particle reinforced aluminium metal–matrix composites are developed to facilitate cost-effective and sustainable manufacturing. These green composites are developed by stir-casting with LM0 as matrix material and snail shell as reinforcement with a distinct percentage (by weight) of inclusion. The influence of snail shells is analyzed through tribological, morphological, and corrosion studies. Aluminium–matrix composite Al98SNS2 with 98% (by weight) aluminium matrix and 2% (by weight) snail shell reinforcement exhibits superior performance in all investigations. Al98SNS2 composite exhibits the least wear rate in the atmosphere of deionized water and 3.5% NaCl. Corrosion deteriorates the surface roughness irrespective of the percentage of incorporation of snail shell reinforcement. However, the deterioration is minimal in Al98SNS2. The current research findings indicate that the incorporation of snail shell in aluminum metal–matrix composites promotes cost-effective, sustainable, and eco-friendly manufacturing. A moderate supply of aluminum (Al) can promote the root growth of plant species, such as tea, that have adapted to acid soils. The formation and development of roots are regulated by phytohormones. However, the role that phytohormones play in facilitating the beneficial effects of Al on root growth is unclear. In the present study, tea plants cultured hydroponically with either 0 or 0.4 mmol/L Al were characterized and compared in terms of root growth, hormone concentrations, and the expression of related genes. The hormone content in tea roots was measured by UPLC–MS, and the expression levels of genes involved in phytohormone biosynthesis, transport, and response were analyzed by qRT-PCR. Our results showed that the indole acetic acid (IAA) concentrations in the root base were significantly higher in plants supplied with Al compared to control plants without Al during the experimental period from 6 h to 7 d. By using inhibitors of IAA synthesis and transport, we found that Al induces short-term IAA synthesis in the root tip and enhances IAA transport in other parts of the root over the longer term, thus promoting root growth in tea plants by limiting IAA accumulation. The expression levels of genes YUC8 and AMI1, involved in IAA accumulation, were consistently upregulated in the root tip, whereas expression of PIN1/2/8, involved in IAA transport, was induced in the root base under Al supply at 6 h. In addition, the expression of PIN2 and PIN5 was highly induced in root stem by Al after 7 d and probably contributed to alleviating IAA accumulation in the root tip and thereby promoted root growth in tea plants. Meanwhile, the XET and expansin activities were increased under Al supply at 6 h. Hyperbolic metamaterials are a class of materials exhibiting anisotropic dielectric function owing to the morphology of the nanostructures. In these structures, one direction behaves as a metal, and the orthogonal direction behaves as a dielectric material. Applications include subdiffraction imaging and hyperlenses. However, key limiting factors include energy losses of noble metals and challenging fabrication methods. In this work, self-assembled plasmonic metamaterials consisting of anisotropic nanoalloy pillars embedded into the ZnO matrix are developed using a seed-layer approach. Alloys of AuxAl1−x or AuxCu1−x are explored due to their lower losses and higher stability. Optical and microstructural properties were explored. The ZnO-AuxCu1−x system demonstrated excellent epitaxial quality and optical properties compared with the ZnO-AuxAl1−x system. Both nanocomposite systems demonstrate plasmonic resonance, hyperbolic dispersion, low losses, and epsilon-near-zero permittivity, making them promising candidates towards direct photonic integration. The hot ductility of Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) and Twinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steels is reviewed, concentrating on the likelihood of cracking occurring on continuous casting during the straightening operation. In this review, the influence of high levels of Al, Si, P, Mn and C on their hot ductility will be discussed as well as the important role B can play in improving their hot ductility. Of these elements, Al has the worst influence on ductility but a high Al addition is often needed in both TWIP and TRIP steels. AlN precipitates are formed often as thin coatings covering the austenite grain surfaces favouring intergranular failure and making them difficult to continuous cast without cracks forming. Furthermore, with TWIP steels the un-recrystallised austenite, which is the state the austenite is when straightening, suffers from excessive grain boundary sliding, so that the ductility often decreases with increasing temperature, resulting in the RA value being below that needed to avoid cracking on straightening. Fortunately, the addition of B can often be used to remedy the deleterious influence of AlN. The influence of precipitation hardeners (Nb, V and Ti based) in strengthening the room temperature yield strength of these TWIP steels and their influence on hot ductility is also discussed. Coal gangue (CG) and coal gasification coarse slag (CGCS) possess both hazardous and resourceful attributes. The present study employed co-roasting followed by H 2 SO 4 leaching to extract Al and Fe from CG and CGCS. The activation behavior and phase transformation mechanism during the co-roasting process were investigated through TG, XRD, FTIR, and XPS characterization analysis as well as Gibbs free energy calculation. The results demonstrate that the leaching rate of total iron (TFe) reached 79.93%, and Al 3+ achieved 43.78% under the optimized experimental conditions (co-roasting process: CG/CGCS mass ratio of 8/2, 600 °C, 1 h; H 2 SO 4 leaching process: 30 wt% H 2 SO 4 , 90 °C, 5 h, liquid to solid ratio of 5:1 mL/g). Co-roasting induced the conversion of inert kaolinite to active metakaolinite, subsequently leading to the formation of sillimanite (Al 2 SiO 5 ) and hercynite (FeAl 2 O 4 ). The iron phases underwent a selective transformation in the following sequence: hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) → magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) → wustite (FeO) → ferrosilite (FeSiO 3 ), hercynite (FeAl 2 O 4 ), and fayalite (Fe 2 SiO 4 ). Furthermore, we found that acid solution and leached residue both have broad application prospects. This study highlights the significant potential of co-roasting CG and CGCS for high-value utilization.

With respect to its density, magnesium (Mg) has a high potential for lightweight components. Nevertheless, the industrial application of Mg is limited due to, for example, its sensitivity to corrosion. To increase the applicability of Mg, a process chain for the production of a Mg component with a complete aluminum (Al) cladding is presented. Hydrostatic co-extrusion was used to produce bar-shaped rods with a diameter of 20 mm. The bonding between the materials was verified by ultrasonic testing. Specimens with a length of 79 mm were cut off from the rods and forged by using a two-staged process. After the first step (Heading), the Mg core was removed partially by drilling to ensure a complete enclosing of the remaining Mg during the second forging step (Net shape forging). The geometry of the drilling hole and the heading die design were dimensioned with the Finite Element-simulation software FORGE. Hence, a complete Al-enclosed Mg component was achieved by using the described process chain and forming processes. In situ TiB2 particle-reinforced 7050Al alloy matrix composites are a new category of particulate metal matrix composites with improved mechanical and physical properties. At present, the study of machining in situ TiB2/Al composite is limited and no specific study has been presented on cutting force. Based on previous work, experimental investigation of cutting in situ TiB2/Al composite was carried out in this study to investigate the cutting force, shear angle, mean friction angle, and shear stress. The results indicated that the feed rate, instead of cutting speed, has a significant influence on the shear angle, mean friction angle, shear stress, and forces, which is different from cutting ex situ SiC/Al composites. Meanwhile, based on Merchant's theory, a force model, which consists of chip formation and ploughing force, was established to have a better understanding of force generation. A comparison of the results show an acceptable agreement between the force model and experiments. Additionally, at varying feed rates, the linear relationship between the shear angle and mean friction angle is still suitable for cutting in situ TiB2/7050Al alloy composites. Three low-carbon bainitic steels were designed to investigate the effects of Cr and Al addition on bainitic transformation, microstructures, and properties by metallographic method and dilatometry. The results show that compared with the base steel without Cr and Al addition, only Cr addition is effective for improving the strength of low-carbon bainitic steel by increasing the amount of bainite. However, compared with the base steel, combined addition of Cr and Al has no significant effect on bainitic transformation and properties. In Cr-bearing steel, Al addition accelerates initial bainitic transformation, but meanwhile reduces the final amount of bainitic transformation due to the formation of a high-temperature transformation product such as ferrite. Consequently, the composite strengthening effect of Cr and Al addition is not effective compared with individual addition of Cr in low-carbon bainitic steels. Therefore, in contrast to high-carbon steels, bainitic transformation in Cr-bearing low-carbon bainitic steels can be finished in a short time, and Al should not be added because Al addition would result in lower mechanical properties. An accumulative swaging and bundling technique is used to prepare composite wires made of Ti and an Al alloy. These wires show reasonable higher yield stresses than expected from the pure material flow curves. The additional strengthening in the composite is analyzed using nanoindentation measurements, tensile testings and investigations of the microstructure. In addition, these properties are analyzed in relation to the fracture surface of the mechanically tested wires. Additional strengthening due to the presence of phase boundaries could be verified. Indications for residual stresses are found that cause a global hardness gradient from the center to the wire rim. This study shows the possibility of processing titanium aluminide wires by cold deformation and annealing. An accumulative swaging and bundling technique is used to co-deform Ti and Al. Subsequently, a two step heat treatment is applied to form the desired intermetallics, which strongly depends on the ratio of Ti and Al in the final composite and therefore on the geometry of the starting composite. In a first step, the whole amount of Al is transformed to TiAl3 by Al diffusion into Ti. This involves the formation of 12% porosity. In a second step, the complete microstructure is transformed into the equilibrium state of ϒ-TiAl and TiAl3. Using this approach, it is possible to obtain various kinds of gradient materials, since there is an intrinsic concentration gradient installed due to the swaging and bundling technique, but the processing of pure ϒ-TiAl wires is possible as well. In this work, an investigation of the properties of nanoscale-thick Ti/TiN, TiN, W, WN layers as diffusion barriers between Si and Al is carried out in view of Si-based electronic applications. Heat treatments were performed on the samples to activate interdiffusion between Si and Al. Changing annealing time and temperature, each sample was morphologically characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy and compositionally characterized by Rutherford backscattering analysis. The aim is to evaluate the efficiency of the layers as diffusion barriers between Si and Al and, at the same time, to evaluate the surface morphological changes upon annealing processes. Light chain amyloidosis (AL) causes irreversible multi-organ damage if not diagnosed early in the disease process. Fat pad biopsy is thought to be a highly sensitive screening test in systemic AL cases, especially if greater than three organs are involved. We present a case of a 64-year-old female who was admitted to the hospital with worsening heart and kidney failure, anasarca, increased free serum lambda light chains, and a negative fat pad biopsy for amyloidosis. Later, she developed asystole, bradycardia, severe hypotension, and respiratory distress. Because X-rays of her calvarium showed multiple osteolytic lesions, a bone marrow biopsy was planned to assess for multiple myeloma. Due to her non-reassuring vitals, the biopsy was not attempted, and she passed away several weeks later. Autopsy findings identified the cause of death as multiple system organ failure due to systemic AL. Through microscopic examination, pathologists found amyloid deposits in her heart, kidneys, rectum, thyroid, adrenals, bone marrow, liver, and spleen. Postmortem fat pad biopsy was negative; however, bone marrow biopsy demonstrated clusters of CD138-positive cells, confirming plasma cell dyscrasia. In cases with a negative fat pad biopsy, an additional superficial or involved organ biopsy should be pursued to establish a diagnosis of amyloidosis if strong clinical suspicion exists. The Al70Fe12.5V12.5Ni5, Al70Fe12.5V12.5Zr5 and Al70Fe12.5V12.5Nb5 alloys were prepared via mechanical alloying. The influence of Zr, Nb or Ni addition on the glass-forming ability of Al-Fe-V amorphous alloys have been investigated. The structure of Al70Fe12.5V12.5Ni5 was amorphous and Al70Fe12.5V12.5Zr5 was not completely amorphous by transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Different criteria were used to evaluate the influence of the addition of alloy elements on the Glass-forming ability. The Al70Fe12.5V12.5Ni5 amorphous alloys exhibits higher glass-forming ability and activation energies of crystallization. Comparison of the effective atomic size ratio and mixture enthalpy on the glass-forming ability of these amorphous alloys demonstrates that the effective atomic size ratio value becomes more significant than the values of mixture enthalpy. In this study, the nucleation and growth kinetics behavior of aluminum (Al) were investigated in the Choline-chloride (ChCl)-urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) ionic liquids. The studies of cyclic voltammetric and chronoamperometry demonstrated that the electrodeposition process of Al was controlled by three-dimensional progressive nucleation and instantaneous nucleation. And the growth of nuclei is a diffusion-controlled process. The diffusion coefficient of Al ions was calculated at 343 K, that is, 1.773 × 10−10 cm2/s. The Al coating was obtained on the surface of the AZ31 magnesium alloy electrode under appropriate conditions. According to the surface morphology of the Al film, it could be inferred that the theoretical deposit thickness is similar to the actual thickness, and the apparent diffusion rate of Al ions is slower than the diffusion coefficient in the electrolytes. So, in the later deposition, lamellar Al along the diffusion direction were formed, and lamellar depleted Al zones existed around the big grain Al-rich region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper reviews original data obtained by the authors from recent separate publications with additional unpublished data, specifically concerning the Lanthanum (La)'s role in the solidification pattern and graphite formation in gray cast irons. Iron melting at 0.018–0.056%S, a 3.7–4.1% carbon equivalent (CE) and less than 0.005%Alresidual are inoculated with La-bearing FeSi alloys at different associations with other inoculating elements. Complex Al-La small inclusions as possible better nucleation sites for (Mn,X)S compounds and La-Ca presence in the body of these sulfides, which possibly provide better nucleation sites for flake graphite, are identified in 0.026%S cast iron. At a lower sulfur content (0.018%S), La,Ca,Al-FeSi alloy still has a high efficiency, but more complex La-bearing alloys are recommended for a higher dendritic austenite amount (LaBaZrTi–FeSi) or for lower eutectic recalescence (LaBaZr–FeSi). La has limited but specific benefits at 0.05–0.06%S irons, including favorable graphitizing factors (a higher amount of graphite precipitated at the end of solidification), lower eutectic recalescence, and a lower value of the first derivative at the end of solidification. When La,Ca,Ba,Al,Zr,S-FeSi treatment (0.035%S base iron) is used, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis finds that the first formed micro-compound is a complex Al-silicate (Zr,La,Ca,Ba presence), which supports the nucleation of the second compound (Mn,Ca,La)S type. At the sulfide-graphite interface, there is a visible thin (nano size) Al-silicate layer (O-Al-Si-Ca-La system), which is more favorable for graphite nucleation (it has better crystallographic compatibility). La is identified in all three important areas of nucleants (the first is formed oxidic nucleus, the second is nucleated Mn-sulfide and the third is a sulfide-graphite interface), thereby increasing the efficiency of graphite nucleation sites. The corrosion behavior of pure aluminum (Al) in 20 v/v% ethanol–gasoline blends has been studied using electrochemical techniques. Ethanol was obtained from different fruits including sugar cane, oranges, apples, or mangos, whereas other techniques included lineal polarization resistance, electrochemical noise, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for 90 days. Results have shown that corrosion rates for Al in all the blends were higher than that obtained in gasoline. In addition, the highest corrosion rate was obtained in the blend containing ethanol obtained from sugar cane. The corrosion process was under charge transfer control in all blends; however, for some exposure times, it was under the adsorption/desorption control of an intermediate compound. Al was susceptible to a localized, plotting type of corrosion in all blends, but they were bigger in size and in number in the blend containing ethanol obtained from sugar cane. The paper reports a joint experimental/theoretical study on the aging of reactive Al/CuO nanolaminates, investigating both structural modifications and combustion properties of aged systems. We first show theoretically that the long-term storage (over several decades) in ambient temperature marginally affects nanolaminates structural properties with an increase in an interfacial layer of only 0.3 nm after 30 years. Then, we observe that the first thermal aging step occurs after 14 days at 200 °C, which corresponds to the replacement of the natural Al/CuO interfaces by a proper ~11 nm thick amorphous alumina. We show that this aging step does impact the nanolaminates structure, leading, for thin bilayer thicknesses, to a substantial loss of the energetic reservoir: considering a stoichiometric Al/CuO stack, the heat of reaction can be reduced by 6–40% depending on the bilayer thickness ranging from 150 nm (40%) to 1 µm (6%). The impact of such thermal aging (14 days at 200 °C) and interfacial modification on the initiation and combustion properties have been evaluated experimentally and theoretically. Varying Al to CuO ratio of nanolaminates from 1 to 3, we show that ignition time of aged systems does not increase over 10% at initiation power densities superior to 15 W·mm−2. In contrast, burn rate can be greatly impacted depending on the bilayer thickness: annealing a stoichiometric nanolaminates with a bilayer thickness of 300 nm at 200 °C for 14 days lowers its burn rate by ~25%, whereas annealing a fuel rich nanolaminates with the same bilayer thickness under the same thermal conditions leads to a burn rate decrease of 20%. When bilayer thickness is greater than 500 nm, the burn rate is not really affected by the thermal aging. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a common hydrophilic and biodegradable polymer that can form films. This study incorporated aluminum nanoadditives as an enhancement reagent into a HPMC matrix. Mechanical properties of nanocompoistes, including the tensile strength and the elastic modulus, were analyzed with a nano-tensile tester. The incorporation of additives in HPMC films significantly enhances their mechanical and film barrier properties. Evidence of bonding between the additive and matrix was observed by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer analysis. The additives occupy the spaces in the pores of the matrix, which increases the tendency of the pore to collapse and improves the chemical bonding between the base material and the additives. The incorporation of excess additives decreases the tensile strength due to ineffective collisions between the additives and the matrix. The wear test proves that the addition of nano-additives can improve the tribology performance of the HPMC composite while reducing the wear volume and the friction. Bonding between the nanoadditives and the matrix does not help release the nanoadditives into the wear interface as a third-body layer. The main reason to enhance the tribology performance is that the nanoadditives improve the load-capacity of the composite coating. In this paper, a comprehensive study was carried out on the application of perovskite catalyst in dry reforming of CH4. The perovskite catalyst was prepared using a sol–gel method. The prepared samples were characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption, TPR, XRD, CO2-TPD, TGA, TPO, Raman, and SEM techniques. In addition, the effect of operating pressure, namely, 1 bar, 3 bar, 5 bar, and 7 bar, temperature (500–800 °C) was evaluated. The characterization results indicated that catalysts operated at 1 bar, gas hourly space velocity of 84000 (mL/g/h) gave the best catalytic performance. CH4 and CO2 conversions of 77 and 80% were obtained at 1 bar and at 700 °C reaction temperature. The increase of reaction temperatures from 500 °C to 800 °C increased the reaction rate and hence the methane and carbon dioxide conversions were increased. A unity ratio of H2/CO was obtained at 1 bar for temperatures 600 °C and above. Similarly, the time on stream tests, obtained at a 700 °C reaction temperature, showed that the best ratio in terms of the closeness of unity and the stable profile could be attained when the pressure was set to 1 bar. The TGA analysis showed the drop of mass due to oxidation of carbon deposits, which started at 500 °C. The catalyst operated at 1 bar produced the least amount of carbon, equivalent to 35% weight loss, while the 3 and 5 bar operated catalysts generated carbon formation, equivalent to 65% weight loss. However, the 7 bar operated catalyst resulted the highest accumulation of carbon formation, equivalent to 83% weight reduction. Hence, the TGA profile indicated the relative carbon deposition on the catalyst, which was dependent of the operated pressure and hence confirmed the suitability operation pressure of 1 bar. Elements' diffusion between Ti-6Al-4V alloy and Al in the process of sliding was investigated from 400 °C to 600 °C. The results showed that the atoms were diffused at the Ti-6Al-4V/Al interface. When sliding at 400 °C and 500 °C, no intermetallic compound was detected on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. When sliding at 600 °C, intermetallic TiAl3 was formed and grew on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The diffusion thickness of Al atoms on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy increased with increasing time and temperature. The diffusion kinetic equation of Al atoms on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was successfully established. The diffusion activation energy of Al atoms in the sliding process was calculated to be 28.22 kJ·mol−1 and the dynamic index n was 0.5. A detailed analysis of the dehydrogenation mechanism and reversibility of LiBH4 doped by as-derived Al (denoted Al*) from AlH3 was performed by thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass spectral analysis (MS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results show that the dehydrogenation of LiBH4/Al* is a five-step reaction: (1) LiBH4 + Al → LiH + AlB2 + "Li-Al-B-H" + B2H6 + H2; (2) the decomposition of "Li-Al-B-H" compounds liberating H2; (3) 2LiBH4 + Al → 2LiH + AlB2 + 3H2; (4) LiBH4 → LiH + B + 3/2H2; and (5) LiH + Al → LiAl + 1/2H2. Furthermore, the reversibility of the LiBH4/Al* composite is based on the following reaction: LiH + LiAl + AlB2 + 7/2H2 ↔ 2LiBH4 + 2Al. The extent of the dehydrogenation reaction between LiBH4 and Al* greatly depends on the precipitation and growth of reaction products (LiH, AlB2, and LiAl) on the surface of Al*. Stainless steel 304L (SS304L) has been selected as the material for canisters for spent fuel storage from three nuclear power plants in Taiwan. A crucial issue is extending the spent fuel storage safety standards of the canisters. The anti-saline corrosion abilities of three thermal spray coatings (i.e., Al, ZnAl, and 625 Inconel alloys) on the SS304L were evaluated by immersion in 3.5 wt % aqueous NaCl and with 0.025 g/cm2 NaCl deposition at 80 °C and 80% relative humidity (RH) for 1000 h. The pristine thermal spray coatings were examined using the pull-off adhesion test to understand the adhesion strength, and Vickers hardness was measured for the mechanical properties of the three coatings. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to identify the porosities of the coatings. Furthermore, the surfaces of the specimens before and after corrosion were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The composition and distribution of the oxide layers formed on the coating surfaces during corrosion were evaluated. Electrochemical measurement was also performed with the polarization method to quantify the corrosion property of the three thermal spray coatings. The results showed that the corrosion rate of Al coating was lowest from the Tafel analysis after the 1000 h corrosion test in 3.5% aqueous NaCl. In contrast, the corrosion rate of Inconel 625 was lowest after 1000 h of the NaCl deposition corrosion test in a controlled environment. Therefore, the ZnAl thermal spray coating is a potential protection layer, keeping in mind economic considerations, of SS304L for anti-corrosion in saline environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
