Thermography provides non-invasive, radiation-free diagnostic imaging. Despite the extensive literature on medical thermography, a comprehensive overview of current applications is lacking. Hence, the aim of this scoping review is to identify the medical applications of passive infrared thermography and to catalogue the technical and environmental modalities. The diagnostic performance of thermography and the existence of specific reference data are evaluated, and research gaps and future tasks identified. The entire review process followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach and the results are reported according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The scoping review protocol is registered at the Open Science Framework (OSF). PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, Web of Science, OpenGrey, OSF, and PROSPERO were searched using pretested search strategies based on the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) approach. According to the eligibility criteria, references were screened by two researchers independently. Seventy-two research articles were identified describing screening, diagnostic, or monitoring studies investigating the potential of thermography in a total of 17,314 participants within 38 different health conditions across 13 therapeutic areas. The use of several camera models from various manufacturers is described. These and other facts and figures are compiled and presented in a detailed, descriptive tabular and visual format. The eye is a complex sensory organ that enables visual perception of the world. The dysfunction of any of these tissues can impair vision. Conduction studies on laboratory animals are essential to ensure the safety of therapeutic products directly applied or injected into the eye to treat ocular diseases before eventually proceeding to clinical trials. Among these tissues, the cornea has unique homeostatic and regenerative mechanisms for maintaining transparency and refraction of external light, which are essential for vision. However, being the outermost tissue of the eye and directly exposed to the external environment, the cornea is particularly susceptible to injury and diseases. This review highlights the evidence for selecting appropriate animals to better understand and treat corneal diseases, which rank as the fifth leading cause of blindness worldwide. The development of reliable and human-relevant animal models is, therefore, a valuable research tool for understanding and translating fundamental mechanistic findings, as well as for assessing therapeutic potential in humans. First, this review emphasizes the unique characteristics of animal models used in ocular research. Subsequently, it discusses current animal models associated with human corneal pathologies, their utility in understanding ocular disease mechanisms, and their role as translational models for patients. This study investigates the effects of cataract surgery on dry eye parameters of patients with dry eye disease (DED) in the medium- to long-term post-surgical period (6 months to 5 years). A cross-sectional study was conducted on 438 eyes on first visit to a tertiary clinic (219 eyes with cataract surgery within timeframe, i.e., pseudophakic dry eye group, 219 comparison eyes without such history, i.e., comparison dry eye group). Parameters evaluated include Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and standard examination for DED. A significantly greater proportion of pseudophakic dry eye group (50%) experienced frequent blurred vision (≥1 episode per week) compared to dry eye control group (38%) (OR = 1.66, 95%CI 1.13, 2.44). Those with ocular discomfort before surgery were more likely to experience blurring at least once a day. However, a significantly greater proportion of the pseudophakic dry eye group (34%) had Schirmer's I >8mm compared to the comparison group (25%) (OR = 0.605, 95% CI 0.398, 0.921), though the difference was not clinically significant (7.51 mm versus 6.51 mm, p > 0.05). Other DED signs (e.g., overall OSDI score, Tear Break-up Time) were not found to be worse among pseudophakic dry eye group. The influence of dry eye disease (DED) on ocular biometric measurements is unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of DED on the repeatability of ocular biometric measurements in cataract patients. Overall, 114 eyes scheduled for cataract surgery were enrolled. Before surgery, DED parameters including tear film break-up time (BUT), corneal and conjunctival staining scores, and subjective symptoms were examined. Corneal curvature radius and axial length were assessed twice on the same day using IOLMaster-500 (Carl Zeiss Meditec), and the absolute difference between the two measurements was calculated and used as an index of measurement repeatability. The measurement repeatability of the steep meridian of corneal curvature radius was significantly worse in eyes with DED than in those without DED (p = 0.044) and was significantly associated with BUT (r = −0.206, p = 0.031). The measurement repeatability of axial length was negatively correlated with BUT (r = −0.199, p = 0.041) and positively correlated with the corneal staining score (r = 0.253, p = 0.009). In conclusion, the measurement repeatability of corneal curvature radius declined in eyes with DED. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the severity of dry eye disease (DED) and galectin-3 concentration (gal-3) and its cleavage (gal-3C) in tear fluid. Twenty-eight DED patients and 14 controls were recruited at Keio University Hospital. The lissamine green conjunctival staining (LG) score, fluorescein corneal staining (FL) score, tear film break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer's test, and ocular symptoms questionnaire score (dry eye questionnaire score, DEQS) were evaluated. Furthermore, the correlation between these parameters and the concentrations of gal-3 in tears (ng/µg) and the detection rate of gal-3C (%) were analyzed. Gal-3 concentration in tears was positively correlated with the LG score (R = 0.60, p < 0.01), FL score (R = 0.49, p < 0.01), and DEQS (R = 0.45, p < 0.01), and negatively correlated with the TBUT score (R = −0.40, p < 0.01) and Schirmer's I value (R = −0.36, p < 0.01). The detection rate of gal-3C in tears was significantly associated with the severity of DED, especially with the LG (p < 0.01) and FL (p < 0.01) scores. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of the perioperative use of a hyaluronic acid (HA) and trehalose ophthalmic solution (Thealoz® Duo) in reducing post-cataract surgery dry eye signs and symptoms in patients with mild/moderate dry eye disease (DED). One hundred and twenty patients, scheduled for unilateral cataract surgery, were randomized into three groups: (1) group A: HA/trehalose three times/day in the preoperative week and for 5 postoperative weeks; (2) group B: HA/trehalose for only 5 postoperative weeks; (3) group C: no artificial tears. In groups A and B, OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index) questionnaire scores were significantly lower than group C at all the postoperative visits; in group A they were significantly lower than group B on the day of surgery, with similar results in the first and fifth weeks after surgery. In groups A and B, break-up time (BUT) was significantly higher than group C during the postoperative period (p ≤ 0.001). In comparison to the preoperative values, BUT in group A remained stable 7 days after surgery; however, in groups B and C, it significantly decreased. In conclusion, the HA/trehalose ophthalmic solution effectively reduced post-cataract surgery DED signs and symptoms in patients with mild/moderate DED, particularly if also administered in the preoperative period. Analysis of higher-order aberrations (HOAs) is one reported method for evaluating dry eye disease (DED)-related loss of visual function. Tear film (TF) instability and corneal epithelial damage (CED) are both reportedly responsible for HOAs in DED, although, to the best of our knowledge, there are no reported methods that allow concurrent evaluation of their effects. In this study, we used a videokeratographer (VK) to continuously measure HOAs in DED after eye opening and investigated factors of ocular surface abnormalities that determine HOAs. This study involved 96 DED cases that underwent DED symptom assessment with a questionnaire and examination of tear volume, TF abnormalities (i.e., TF lipid-layer interference grades and spreading grades, and non-invasive breakup time and fluorescein breakup time), and CED, and their correlation with HOAs evaluated via VK. The results show that HOAs at 1 or 2 s after eye opening can reflect TF instability and CED within the central 4-millimeter-diameter area of the optical zone in DED eyes concurrently. Background: Dry eye disease is a significant disease in Singapore. While there have been studies using allogenic cord serum for the treatment of dry eye disease, treatment of dry eyes with allogenic umbilical cord plasma drops has yet to be started in Singapore. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of umbilical cord plasma eyedrops for the treatment of recalcitrant dry eyes in a local Singaporean context. Methods: This is an observational, longitudinal, interventional study for dry eye patients who did not show clear improvement after standard therapy. Patients were recruited from 2020 to 2023 from the dry eye clinic of the Singapore National Eye Center. Umbilical cord plasma was delivered frozen to patients and stored in home freezers. All participants underwent a standardized clinical evaluation for dry eye, and data were collected. Results: There were 40 participants (7 males and 33 females). The duration of follow-up was 5.52 ± 1.57 months. Kerato-epitheliopathy staining score, TBUT (tear breakup time), and SPEED (Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness Questionnaire) scores significantly improved after treatment. No statistically significant improvement was found in terms of visual acuity, according to Schirmer's score. Conclusion: Cord plasma eye drops significantly improved kerato-epitheliopathy staining scores in recalcitrant dry eye patients. (1) Background: The current study aimed to compare two of the most frequently prescribed preservative-free (PF) antiglaucoma drops, (Latanoprost PF vs. Bimatoprost PF) in promoting OSD in patients with POAG. (2) Methods: In this prospective study, 44 eyes from 44 participants were included. In the control group we enrolled 24 eyes, 11 eyes treated only with Latanoprost PF were enrolled in the Latanoprost PF group, and 9 eyes treated only with Bimatoprost PF in the Bimatoprost PF group. In all eyes, we evaluated the ocular levels of MMP-9 using the InflammaDry kit. We also performed Schirmer's test and the TBUT test. (3) Results: We found elevated ocular levels of MMP-9 (>40 ng/mL) in the Bimatoprost PF group (88.89% of the participants) compared to the control (8.33%) and the Latanoprost PF group (27.27%), and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The Schirmer's test values were statistically significantly lower in the Bimatoprost PF group compared to the other two groups. Additionally, the TBUT values were lower in the Bimatoprost PF group compared to the control group, and the difference was statistically significant. Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder in which tear fluid homeostasis is lost, resulting in increased tear film osmolarity and ocular surface irritation. In Asia, the short tear film breakup time-type DED, which has become a global problem in recent years, is common. While the mainstay of DED treatment in the West is the suppression of inflammation, the first goal of treatment is the stabilization of the tear film in Asia. To date, artificial tears and steroid eye drops have been the main treatment for DED. However, artificial tears require frequent administration of eye drops and thus pose adherence problems, while steroids have problems with side-effects (cataracts, increased intraocular pressure). This review evaluates the new generation therapies in Asia based on what is known about them and demonstrates that they are more effective for DED than traditional therapies such as artificial tears and steroids. Based on considerations, it is proposed that the optimal treatment for the short tear film breakup time-type DED is the initial application of mucin-secretion-enhancing eye drops (long-acting diquafosol) and oral supplements; and if additional treatment is needed, cyclosporine eye drops and the adjunctive therapies presented in this review are added. Background: Cystinosis is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the accumulation of cystine crystals in several tissues and organs causing, among others, severe eye symptoms. The high instability of cysteamine eye drops makes it difficult to develop formulations with an acceptable shelf life to be prepared in hospital pharmacy departments. Previously, a new compounded formulation of cysteamine eye drops in hyaluronic acid (HA) packaged in innovative single-dose systems was developed. Methods: Long-term stability at −20 °C of this formulation was studied considering the content of cysteamine, pH, osmolality, viscosity, and microbiological analysis. The oxygen permeability of single-dose containers was also studied and an ocular biopermanence study was conducted in healthy volunteers measuring lacrimal stability and volume parameters. Results: Data confirm that cysteamine concentration remained above 90% for 120 days, all parameters remaining within the accepted range for ophthalmic formulations. The permeability of the containers was reduced over time, while ocular biopermanence was maintained despite the freezing process and storage time. Conclusions: 0.55% cysteamine hydrochloride formulation in HA and packaged in single-dose containers preserved at −20 °C is stable for 120 days protected from light, presenting high potential for its translation into clinical practice when commercial presentations are not available. This study evaluated the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid and trehalose (HA/trehalose) eyedrops in managing dry eye disease (DED) symptoms by measuring tear stability and administering a DED questionnaire. Sixty patients were treated with either HA/trehalose eyedrops (Tear A) or carmellose sodium eyedrops (Tear B) as controls. The tear breakup time (TBUT) and non-invasive breakup time (NIBUT) were monitored, and patients completed the standard patient evaluation of eye dryness (SPEED) questionnaire. After two months of twice-daily applications, patients treated with the HA/trehalose eyedrops demonstrated significant improvements in the NIBUT (12.98 ± 3.22 s) and TBUT (12.95 ± 2.98 s), indicating increased tear stability. Moreover, they reported lower dry eye sensation (6.70 ± 4.94 SPEED score points), suggesting a reduction in DED symptoms. These findings underscore the efficacy of HA/trehalose eyedrops in improving both the objective and subjective signs of DED, with twice-daily application enhancing ocular surface conditions and reducing patient-reported symptoms. Significantly increased eye blink rate and partial blinks have been well documented in patients with dry eye disease (DED), a multifactorial eye disorder with few effective methods for clinical diagnosis. In this study, a point of care mHealth App named "EyeScore" was developed, utilizing blink rate and patterns as early clinical biomarkers for DED. EyeScore utilizes an iPhone for a 1-min in-app recording of eyelid movements. The use of facial landmarks, eye aspect ratio (EAR) and derivatives enabled a comprehensive analysis of video frames for the determination of eye blink rate and partial blink counts. Smartphone videos from ten DED patients and ten non-DED controls were analyzed to optimize EAR-based thresholds, with eye blink and partial blink results in excellent agreement with manual counts. Importantly, a clinically relevant algorithm for the calculation of "eye healthiness score" was created, which took into consideration eye blink rate, partial blink counts as well as other demographic and clinical risk factors for DED. This 10-point score can be conveniently measured anytime with non-invasive manners and successfully led to the identification of three individuals with DED conditions from ten non-DED controls. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a highly prevalent condition and the most common cause of evaporative dry eye disease. Studying the proteome of MGD can result in important advances in the management of the condition. Here, we collected tear film samples from treatment naïve patients with MGD (n = 10) and age-matched controls (n = 11) with Schirmer filtration paper. The samples were analyzed with label-free quantification nano liquid chromatography—tandem mass spectrometry. The proteins were considered differentially expressed if p < 0.05. A total of 88 proteins were significantly regulated. The largest change was observed in cystatin-SN, which was downregulated in MGD and correlated negatively with tear meniscus height. The downregulation of cystatin-SN was confirmed with targeted mass spectrometry by single reaction monitoring (SRM). Eighteen immunoglobulin components involved in B cell activation, phagocytosis, and complement activation were downregulated in MGD including Ig alpha-1 chain C region, immunoglobulin J chain, immunoglobulin heavy variable 3–15, and Ig mu chain C region. The changes in cystatin-SN and immunoglobulin chains are likely to result from the inflammatory changes related to tear film evaporation, and future studies may assess their association with the meibum quality. However, the potential of algae-derived AX as a solution to various global environmental and societal challenges that threaten life on our planet has not received extensive attention. Furthermore, the historical context and the role of AX in nature, as well as its significance in diverse cultures and traditional health practices, have not been comprehensively explored in previous works. This review article embarks on a comprehensive journey through the history leading up to the present, offering insights into the discovery of AX, its chemical and physical attributes, distribution in organisms, and biosynthesis. Additionally, it delves into the intricate realm of health benefits, biofunctional characteristics, and the current market status of AX. By encompassing these multifaceted aspects, this review aims to provide readers with a more profound understanding and a robust foundation for future scientific endeavors directed at addressing societal needs for sustainable nutritional and medicinal solutions. The EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index (ESSDAI), EULAR Sjogren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI), and other patient-reported outcomes (PROs), such as the visual analog scale (VAS) for symptoms and EULAR sicca score (ESS), are used to assess the disease activity of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Recently, Clinical ESSDAI (ClinESSDAI) and Clinical Trials ESSDAI (ClinTrialsESSDAI) were developed for objective clinical disease activity indexes. However, the relationship of ClinESSDAI and ClinTrialsESSDAI with PROs as well as that between ESSPRI and other PROs and the objective parameters of glandular function in pSS have not been established. Herein, we investigated the correlation of ESSPRI and other PROs with the objective parameters of glandular function and the relationship of PROs with ClinESSDAI and ClinTrialsESSDAI in 66 patients with pSS. Correlations were calculated with Spearman's correlation coefficient. ClinTrialsESSDAI was correlated with ESSPRI, dryness (ESSPRI-Dryness), fatigue, and pain domains of ESSPRI, VAS for oral dryness (oral-VAS), and patient's global assessment. Although ESSPRI did not correlate with the objective parameters of glandular function, ESSPRI-Dryness, ESS, and oral- and ocular-VAS did. These results suggest that ESSPRI-Dryness, ESS, and VAS for symptoms, but not ESSPRI, reflect the glandular dysfunction and that ClinTrialsESSDAI correlates with PROs for dryness in pSS. Nowadays, children and adolescents are exposed to digital media (DM) from an early age. Therefore, specific guidelines have been published by the World Health Organization, whose aim is to limit daily screen time (ST) viewing. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a rise in DM use, and consequently ST viewing, was observed. More and more aspects of modern life are thought to be affected by excessive ST viewing. Accordingly, the aim of this review is to document the health effects of excessive ST viewing on children and adolescents. A narrative review was performed in searchable databases. In total, 43 original articles were considered. Excessive ST viewing was correlated with increased risk for obesity and other cardiometabolic risk factors, mental health, unhealthy dietary habits and eating disorders, and problems in development and child–parent relationships. Sleep, physical activity, eyesight, headaches, and the musculoskeletal system were negatively affected as well. However, the effect of ST was weighted by the type of media used and the way types of media were used. Other confounding factors were reported. There is evidence to suggest a negative correlation between excessive ST and youth health exists. Nevertheless, more research is needed if this correlation is to be established. Faced with environmental issues and depleting oil reserves, engine research is venturing into novel paths, such as the dual-fuel engine. This has motivated the development of numerical models that provide highly accurate predictive tools. In this context, 0D/quasi-D modeling is necessary, with a compromise between control of computation time and acceptable prediction level, which will certainly enable the various studies on the dual fuel mode to be explored at reduced cost. The aim of the present study is to develop a combustion model adapted to the hydrogen-natural gas (HNG)/diesel dual fuel engine to ensure 0D/1D simulations over a wide load range and under different gas mixture compositions. This model is based on the separation of the different types of combustion in this mode, by first treating the combustion of the pilot fuel by jet modeling, then the combustion of the gas mixture (HNG) by a mathematical model based on the Gaussian function. This phase separation is carefully combined with a mathematical treatment of the heat release rate, in order to determine ignition delays for both phases and model each of them separately. The modeling approach unveiled in this work is based on a phenomenological aspect, where the distinction between pilot and primary fuel combustion is ensured with phase separation allowing precise monitoring of the combustion sequence with the detection of the start and end of each phase and the contribution of each to the overall heat release rate. The results confirm the predictive power of the model developed with a maximum error of around 2%. This accurate prediction is particularly evident at high loads with high hydrogen enrichment, where the combustion sequence becomes complicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to their potent immunoregulatory and angio-modulatory properties, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their exosomes (MSC-Exos) have emerged as potential game-changers in regenerative ophthalmology, particularly for the personalized treatment of inflammatory diseases. MSCs suppress detrimental immune responses in the eyes and alleviate ongoing inflammation in ocular tissues by modulating the phenotype and function of all immune cells that play pathogenic roles in the development and progression of inflammatory eye diseases. MSC-Exos, due to their nano-sized dimension and lipid envelope, easily bypass all barriers in the eyes and deliver MSC-sourced bioactive compounds directly to target cells. Although MSCs and their exosomes offer a novel approach to treating immune cell-driven eye diseases, further research is needed to optimize their therapeutic efficacy. A significant number of experimental studies is currently focused on the delineation of intracellular targets, which crucially contribute to the immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects of MSCs and MSC-Exos. The activation of NLRP3 inflammasome induces programmed cell death of epithelial cells, induces the generation of inflammatory phenotypes in eye-infiltrated immune cells, and enhances the expression of adhesion molecules on ECs facilitating the recruitment of circulating leukocytes in injured and inflamed eyes. In this review article, we summarize current knowledge about signaling pathways that are responsible for NLRP3 inflammasome-driven intraocular inflammation and we emphasize molecular mechanisms that regulate MSC-based modulation of NLRP3-driven signaling in eye-infiltrated immune cells, providing evidence that NLRP3 inflammasome should be considered a potentially new therapeutic target for MSCs and MSC-Exo-based treatment of inflammatory eye diseases. The purpose of this study was to describe ocular surface and anterior eye segment findings in various types of ichthyoses. Methods: This was a single-center prospective observational study. The study group consisted of five patients (P1–P5) aged 13–66 years. Multimodal imaging was performed, including slit-lamp examinations, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM). Results: All patients were diagnosed with moderate-to-severe dry eye disease (DED). The corneas showed a significant pattern of irregularity, with a significant difference between the corneal thickness at the apex (CAT) and the corneal thinnest thickness (CTT), exceeding 375 µm. Three patients were diagnosed with ectasia patterns based on SS-OCT. All patients showed abnormalities in at least one Fourier index parameter for at least one eye at 3 or 6 mm in the keratometric, anterior, or posterior analyses. IVCM examinations revealed changes in all corneal layers. Conclusions: By combining the results of multimodal imaging, we were able to detect preclinical abnormalities, distinguish characteristic changes common to ichthyosis, and reveal the depth and characteristics of corneal abnormalities. Background: Patient-reported dry eye symptoms (DESs), assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and the Symptom Assessment iN Dry Eye (SANDE) questionnaires, were compared in a large sample of patients. Methods: The correlation (Spearman coefficient) and agreement (Bland-Altman analysis) between the OSDI and SANDE questionnaire scores (with and without score normalization) were assessed in 1033 patients and classified according to the OSDI score as non-DES and DES in a cross-sectional analysis. Results: The normalized and non-normalized SANDE results were higher than the OSDI results in all samples (2.83 ± 12.40 (p = 0.063) and 2.85 ± 15.95 (p = 0.016), respectively) and in non-DES (p > 0.063) and DES (p < 0.001) with both OSDI cutoff values. Weak correlations were found (Spearman coefficient < 0.53; p < 0.001) in all cases except DES (0.12, p = 0.126). Weak agreement was found with a Bland-Altman analysis of the normalized and non-normalized scores of both questionnaires (mean difference from −7.67 ± 29.17 (DES patients) to −1.33 ± 8.99 (non-DES patients) without score normalization, and from −9.21 ± 26.37 (DES patients) to −0.85 ± 4.01 (non-DES) with data normalization), with a statistically significant linear relationship (R2 > 0.32, p < 0.001). The SANDE questionnaire did not yield the same patient classification as OSDI. The same operative curves (ROC) of the SANDE normalized and non-normalized scores were used to differentiate among patients with DES using OSDI < 12 (0.836 ± 0.015) or OSDI < 22 (0.880 ± 0.015) cutoff values. Conclusions: Normalized and non-normalized data collected from the SANDE questionnaire showed relevant differences from those of the OSDI, which suggests that the results of the SANDE visual analog scale-based questionnaire provide different patient classifications than the OSDI score. Since its emergence in early 2020, the SARS-CoV-2 infection has had a significant impact on the entire eye care system. Ophthalmologists have been categorized as a high-risk group for contracting the virus due to the belief that the eye may be a site of inoculation and transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 infection. As a result, clinical ophthalmologists, optometrists, and eyecare professionals have had to familiarize themselves with the ocular manifestations of COVID-19, as well as its treatments and vaccines. The implementation of measures to prevent the transmission of the virus, such as restrictions, lockdowns, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence (AI), have led to substantial and potentially irreversible changes in routine clinical practice, education, and research. This has resulted in the emergence of a new mode of managing patients in a routine clinical setting. This brief review aims to provide an overview of various aspects of COVID-19 in ophthalmology, including the ocular manifestations related to the disease, the modes of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection, precautions taken in ophthalmic practice to prevent the spread of the virus, drugs, and vaccines used in the treatment of COVID-19, the impact of the pandemic on patients, clinicians, and the eye care system as a whole, and the future of ophthalmology conditioned by this global pandemic experience. Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a heterogeneous chronic autoimmune disorder with multiple clinical manifestations that can develop into non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. The pathogenesis of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is not completely understood, but it is assumed that pathogenesis of SS is multifactorial. The microbiota plays a notable role in the development of autoimmune disorders, including Sjögren's syndrome. Molecular mimicry, metabolite changes and epithelial tolerance breakdown are pathways that might help to clarify the potential contribution of the microbiota to SS pathogenesis. This review aims to provide an overview of recent studies describing microbiota changes and microbiota mechanisms associated with Sjögren's syndrome. Data on the microbiota in SS from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane Library databases are summarized. Overall, the microbiota makes a major contribution to the development of Sjögren's syndrome and progression. The safety zone around the flight path of a rocket is determined by the fall of debris in the case of an accidental explosion or commanded termination. The trajectory of a tumbling body in a vertical plane is determined by specifying the velocity, flight path angle and angle of attack as functions of time. This involves the lift, drag and pitching moment coefficients as functions of the angle of attack over a full circle—0 to 360 degrees—to account for the tumbling motion. The problem is reduced to a third-order non-linear differential equation for the angle of attack by using the approximation of free fall coordinates. The analytical and numerical solutions show that two types of tumbling fall are possible, one with rotation and the other with oscillation. This non-comparative prospective case series was conducted to characterize the clinical impact of intense pulsed light (IPL)-based treatment in dry eyes associated to Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), defining the predicting factors for a successful outcome with this therapy in a large case series. A total of 390 eyes (195 patients, range: 23–93 years) received four sessions of Optima IPL system (Lumenis, Yokneam, Israel). Significant changes were observed in tear film osmolarity in both eyes (p < 0.001) and in meibum quality (p < 0.001), with more eyes showing clear or yellow secretions after therapy. Mean change in the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) was −8.61, ranging from −27.00 to 11.00. This change was significantly correlated with the baseline value of OSDI (r = −0.489, p < 0.001). The change in osmolarity correlated significantly with the baseline osmolarity in both eyes (right r = −0.636, left r = −0.620, p < 0.001). A linear predicting model of the change in OSDI with therapy was obtained: change OSDI = 10.99 − 0.35 × OSDI − 1.03 × NIBUTRE-LE (mean non-invasive break up time of right and left eye) − 2.03 × Meibum quality grade (p = 0.001; R2: 0.325). In conclusion, the improvement in symptomatology achieved with an IPL-based therapy can be predicted at baseline using a linear model considering the level of MGD and the magnitude of OSDI and NIBUT (non-invasive break-up time). The aim of this prospective observational study was to examine changes in eyelid pressure and dry eye status after orbital decompression in thyroid eye disease (TED). In 16 patients (29 sides), upper eyelid pressure at plateau phase and maximum pressure were measured. TED status was evaluated through the Hertel exophthalmometric value and margin reflex distance (MRD)-1 and 2. Dry eye status was quantified through corneal fluorescein staining, tear break-up time, Schirmer test I results, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), tear meniscus height, and superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK). Patients were classified into two groups: patients with decreased eyelid pressure (Group 1) and those with elevated pressure (Group 2). Consequently, neither the maximum upper eyelid pressure nor pressure at plateau phase significantly changed after surgery (p > 0.050). Some parameters about MGD improved after surgery, but the other parameters on dry eye, MGD, and SLK worsened or did not change. MRD-1 decreased more (p = 0.028), and the ratio of patients in whom SLK improved after surgery was larger in Group 1 (p = 0.030). Purpose: To report the ocular surface pathology of patients suffering from acute/subacute mercury vapor intoxication. Design: Cross-sectional study. Participants: Male workers intoxicated with inorganic mercury referred for ophthalmic involvement and healthy control subjects. Methods: The following tests were performed: dry eye (DE)-related symptoms indicated by the ocular surface disease (OSDI) index questionnaire; tear osmolarity; analysis of 23 tear cytokine concentrations and principal component and hierarchical agglomerative cluster analyses; tear break-up time (T-BUT); corneal fluorescein and conjunctival lissamine green staining; tear production by Schirmer and tear lysozyme tests; mechanical and thermal corneal sensitivity (non-contact esthesiometry); and corneal nerve analysis and dendritic cell density by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM). Results: Twenty-two out of 29 evaluated patients entered the study. Most had DE-related symptoms (OSDI values > 12), that were severe in 63.6% of them. Tear osmolarity was elevated (>308 mOsms/L) in 83.4% of patients (mean 336.23 (28.71) mOsm/L). Corneal and conjunctival staining were unremarkable. T-BUT was low (<7 s) in 22.7% of patients. Schirmer test and tear lysozyme concentration were low in 13.6% and 27.3% of cases, respectively. Corneal esthesiometry showed patient mechanical (mean 147.81 (53.36) mL/min) and thermal thresholds to heat (+2.35 (+1.10) °C) and cold (−2.57 (−1.24) °C) to be significantly higher than controls. Corneal IVCM revealed lower values for nerve density (6.4 (2.94) n/mm2), nerve branching density (2 (2.50) n/mm2), and dendritic cell density (9.1 (8.84) n/mm2) in patients. Tear levels of IL-12p70, IL-6, RANTES, and VEGF were increased, whereas EGF and IP-10/CXCL10 were decreased compared to controls. Based on cytokine levels, two clusters of patients were identified. Compared to Cluster 1, Cluster 2 patients had significantly increased tear levels of 18 cytokines, decreased tear lysozyme, lower nerve branching density, fewer dendritic cells, and higher urine mercury levels. Conclusions: Patients suffering from systemic mercury intoxication showed symptoms and signs of ocular surface pathology, mainly by targeting the trigeminal nerve, as shown by alterations in corneal sensitivity and sub-basal nerve morphology. Background: Nowadays, the continuous increase in air pollution has significantly changed air quality, leading to the onset of the so-called urban syndrome (US), an allergic-like conjunctivitis triggered by pollutants. These patients are characterized by persistent dysregulation of ocular surface para-inflammation, causing chronic low-grade inflammation and ocular discomfort, with significant consequences for occupational health and job productivity prospects. This study aims to investigate the effects of topical glycerophosphoinositol (GPI) eye drops on the signs and symptoms of US. Methods: A multicenter prospective open interventional study was performed. Patients affected by US, enrolled from occupational medicine clinics, were treated with eye drops containing 0.001% GPI in 0.2% HA vehicle three times a day. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear break-up time (T-BUT), Schirmer test, Oxford score, hyperemia and ocular surface symptoms were recorded at patient enrolment (T0), after 1 week (T1) and after 1 month (T2) of treatment. Results: A total of 113 consecutive patients (226 eyes) were included. OSDI score displayed a significant improvement after one week (T0: 39.9 ± 19, T1: 20.8 ± 17.9, T2: 18.4 ± 15.6, p < 0.0001); T-BUT (T0: 5.2 ± 2, T1: 7.7 ± 2.2, T2: 9.7 ± 1.8, p < 0.0001) and Schirmer Test (T0: 6.6 ± 2.4, T1: 9.7 ± 2.7, T2: 12.6 ± 2.6, p < 0.0001) progressively improved from T0 to T2. Sjögren's disease (SD) is a chronic autoimmune disease primarily affecting lacrimal and salivary glands. The diagnosis of pediatric SD mostly relies on clinical suspect, resulting in a significant diagnostic delay. Recently, ultrahigh-frequency ultrasound (UHFUS) of labial glands has been proposed as a diagnostic method in adults with suspected SD. Until now, there have been no studies about UHFUS in pediatric diagnostic work-up. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential role of UHFUS of minor salivary glands in pediatric SD. Consecutive pediatric patients with a diagnosis of pediatric SD seen at AOU Meyer IRCSS were evaluated. Intraoral UHFUS scan of the lip mucosa was performed with Vevo MD equipment, using a 70 MHz probe with a standardized protocol and the images were independently reviewed by two operators. Lip salivary glands were assessed by using a four-grade semiquantitative scoring system for parenchymal alteration and vascularization. Twelve patients were included. When applying UHFUS to this cohort of patients, all patients showed a UHFUS grade of ≥1 with 8/12 showing a mild glandular alteration (i.e., grade 1), 2/12 a moderate glandular alteration (i.e., grade 2) and finally 2/12 a severe glandular alteration (i.e., grade 3). Moderate intraglandular vascularization was seen in 9/12, with only 3/12 showing mild intraglandular vascularization. Due to limited size of the sample, the relationship between histological findings, autoantibodies status and UHFUS grade could not be performed. A variety of advanced manufacturing processes have been developed based on the concept of rapid solidification processing (RSP), such as uniform droplet spraying (UDS) for the additive manufacturing of metals and alloys. This article introduces a morphological simulation of fractal dendric structures deposited by UDS of magnesium (Mg) alloys on two-dimensional (2D) planar sections. The fractal structure evolution is modeled as Apollonian packs of generalized ellipsoidal domains growing out of nuclei and dendrite arm fragments. The model employs descriptions of the dynamic thermal field based on superposed Green's/Rosenthal functions with source images for initial/boundary effects, along with alloy phase diagrams and the classical solidification theory for nucleation and fragmentation rates. The initiation of grains is followed by their free and constrained growth by adjacent domains, represented via potential fields of level-set methods, for the effective mapping of the solidified topology and its metrics (grain size and fractal dimension of densely packed domains). The model is validated by comparing modeling results against micrographs of three UDS-deposited Mg–Zn–Y alloys. The further evolution of this real-time computational model and its application as a process observer for feedback control in 3D printing, as well as for off-line material design and optimization, is discussed. The loss of ocular surface (OS) homeostasis characterizes the onset of dry eye disease. Resilience defines the ability to withstand this threat, reflecting the ability of the ocular surface to cope with and bounce back after challenging events. The coping capacity of the OS defines the ability to successfully manage cellular stress. Cellular stress, which is central to the outcome of the pathophysiology of dry eye disease, is characterized by intensity, continuity, and receptivity, which lead to the loss of homeostasis, resulting in a phase of autocatalytic dysregulation, an event that is not well-defined. To better define this event, here, we present a model providing a potential approach when homeostasis is challenged and the coping capacities have reached their limits, resulting in the stage of heterostasis, in which the dysregulated cellular stress mechanisms take over, leading to dry eye disease. The main feature of the proposed model is the concept that, prior to the initiation of the events leading to cellular stress, there is a period of intense activation of all available coping mechanisms preventing the imminent dysregulation of ocular surface homeostasis. When the remaining coping mechanisms and resilience potential have been maximally exploited and have, finally, been exceeded, there will be a transition to manifest disease with all the well-known signs and symptoms, with a shift to allostasis, reflecting the establishment of another state of balance. The intention of this review was to show that it is possibly the phase of heterostasis preceding the establishment of allostasis that offers a better chance for therapeutic intervention and optimized recovery. Once allostasis has been established, as a new steady-state of balance at a higher level of constant cell stress and inflammation, treatment may be far more difficult, and the potential for reversal is drastically decreased. Homeostasis, once lost, can possibly not be fully recovered. The processes established during heterostasis and allostasis require different approaches and treatments for their control, indicating that the current treatment options for homeostasis need to be adapted to a more-demanding situation. Background: We aimed to evaluate the existence of accommodative microfluctuations in eyes after cataract surgery. Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study included 1160 eyes of 713 patients (mean age: 72.5 ± 8.3 years) who underwent phacoemulsification, intraocular lens insertion, and an evaluation of accommodative microfluctuations with an autorefractometer. Patients with posterior segment disorders resulting in visual acuity impairment and those with unavailable medical information were excluded. High-frequency components (HFCs), between 1.0–2.3 Hz, based on fast Fourier transform analysis of the accommodative microfluctuation data were examined at postoperative 2–3 (2 M) and 6 months (6 M). The relationships between the HFCs and patient age, manifest refraction, and axial length were analyzed. Results: Increased HFC values (>65) were observed at a constant rate after cataract surgery, with prevalence rates of 33.4% at 2 M and 34.7% at 6 M. Postoperatively, at 2 M, increased HFC values were significantly more common for eyes with axial length ≥26 mm than for those with axial length <26 mm (p = 0.0056). However, they were not significantly correlated to age or postoperative manifest refraction. Conclusions: At 2 M postoperatively, increased HFC values presented more frequently in eyes with a greater axial length; hence, the precise detection and understanding of postoperative accommodative spasms in high myopia patients is important. Although multiple mouse strains have been advanced as models for Sjögren's syndrome (SS), which is a human systemic autoimmune disease characterized primarily as the loss of lacrimal and salivary gland functions, the C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 recombinant inbred (RI) mouse derived from the NOD/ShiLtJ line is considered one of the more appropriate models exhibiting virtually all the characteristics of the human disease. This mouse model, as well as other mouse models of SS, have shown that B lymphocytes are essential for the onset and development of observed clinical manifestations. Recently, studies carried out in the C57BL/6.IL14α transgenic mouse have provided clear evidence that the marginal zone B (MZB) cell population is directly involved in the early pathological events initiating the development of the clinical SS disease, as well as late-stage lymphomagenesis resulting in B-cell lymphomas. Since MZB cells are difficult to study in vivo and in vitro, we carried out a series of ex vivo investigations that utilize temporal global RNA transcriptomic analyses to profile differentially expressed genes exhibiting temporal upregulation during the initial onset and subsequent development of pathophysiological events within the lacrimal and salivary gland tissues per se or associated with the leukocyte cell migrations into these glands. The initial transcriptomic analyses revealed that while the upregulated gene expression profiles obtained from lacrimal and salivary glands overlap, multiple genetic differences exist between the defined activated pathways. In the current study, we present a concept suggesting that the initial pathological events differ between the two glands, yet the subsequent upregulated TLR4/TLR3 signal transduction pathway that activates the type-1 interferon signature appears to be identical in the two glands and indicates an autoimmune response against dsRNA, possibly a virus. The early failure of glaucoma surgery is mainly caused by over-fibrosis at the subconjunctival space, causing obliteration of the filtration bleb. Because fibrosis has a suspected basis of genetic predisposition, we have undertaken a prospective study to identify upregulated profibrotic genes in a population of glaucoma patients with signs of conjunctival fibrosis and early postoperative surgical failure. Clinical data of re-operated fibrosis patients, hyperfibrosis patients who re-operated more than once in a short time, and control patients with no fibrosis were recorded and analyzed at each follow-up visit. Conjunctival-Tenon surgical specimens were obtained intraoperatively to evaluate the local expression of a panel of genes potentially associated with fibrosis. In order to correlate gene expression signatures with protein levels, we quantified secreted proteins in primary cultures of fibroblasts from patients. Expression of VEGFA, CXCL8, MYC, and CDKN1A was induced in the conjunctiva of hyperfibrosis patients. VEGFA and IL8 protein levels were also increased in fibroblast supernatants. We propose that an increase in these proteins could be useful in detecting conjunctival fibrosis in glaucoma patients undergoing filtering surgery. Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease that affects exocrine glands, mainly salivary and lacrimal glands. Several studies have investigated cytokine profiles in tears in order to understand the pathogenesis of SS and find additional diagnostic markers. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze cytokines in tears of SS patients. A systematic literature search of the Cochrane, Medline via PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted using key terms related to "Sjögren's syndrome" and "tears" combined with "biomarker", "cytokines", "interleukin", and "chemokines", following PRISMA guidelines. Article selection was subjected to certain eligibility criteria. A total of 17 articles (from 1998 and 2022) were selected for the quantitative and qualitative analysis. When compared to controls, concentrations of IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1 Ra, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-17, IL-21 and IL-22 were consistently higher; however, IL-23 was significantly lower in patients with SS compared to the controls. Tear levels of some cytokines were significantly elevated among SS groups compared to control groups. Therefore, these cytokines could be potential biomarkers of SS. Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is a common and debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Despite its prevalence, the diagnosis and management of DED can be challenging, as the condition is multifactorial and symptoms can be nonspecific. In recent years, there have been significant advancements in diagnostic technology for DED, including the development of several new devices. Methods: A literature review of articles on the dry eye syndrome and innovative diagnostic devices was carried out to provide an overview of some of the current high-tech diagnostic tools for DED, specifically focusing on the TearLab Osmolarity System, DEvice Hygrometer, IDRA, Tearcheck, Keratograph 5M, Cornea Dome Lens Imaging System, I-PEN Osmolarity System, LipiView II interferometer, LacryDiag Ocular Surface Analyzer, Tearscope-Plus, and Cobra HD Camera. Delayed or prolonged corneal wound healing and non-healing corneas put patients at risk for ocular surface infections and subsequent stromal opacification, resulting in discomfort or visual loss. It is important to enhance corneal wound healing efficiency and quality. Vitamin D (Vit D) is both a hormone and a vitamin, and its insufficiency has been linked to immune disorders and diabetes. For this study, wound healing and recruitment of CD45+ cells into the wound area of normoglycemic and diabetic mice were examined following corneal epithelial debridement and treatment with 1,25-dihyroxyvitamin D (1,25 Vit D) or 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (24,25 Vit D). Treatment with topical 1,25-dihyroxyvitamin D (1,25 Vit D) resulted in significantly increased corneal wound healing rates of normoglycemic, diabetic and diabetic Vit D deficient mice. Furthermore, 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (24,25 Vit D) significantly increased corneal wound healing of diabetic Vit D deficient and Vit D receptor knockout (VDR KO) mice. In addition, CD45+ cell numbers were reduced in diabetic and VDR KO mouse corneas compared to normoglycemic mice, and 24,25 Vit D increased the recruitment of CD45+ cells to diabetic mouse corneas after epithelial debridement. CD45+ cells were found to infiltrate into the corneal basal epithelial layer after corneal epithelial debridement. Our data indicate that topical Vit D promotes corneal wound healing and further supports previous work that the Vit D corneal wound healing effect is not totally VDR-dependent. Long-acting (lasting extend) diquafosol ophthalmic solution 3% (DQSLX) is administered three times daily versus six times daily for the currently approved diquafosol ophthalmic solution (DQS). We investigated the efficacy and adherence of switching from DQS to DQSLX in patients with dry eye disease. We retrospectively enrolled 54 patients (17 men and 37 women) with eye drop prescription changes from DQS to DQSLX between December 2022 and March 2023. The number of eye drops, subjective symptoms, tear breakup time (TBUT), and fluorescein staining scores from baseline to 4 weeks after starting DQSLX were evaluated. Participants then chose between DQSLX and DQS. Patients administered DQSLX three times per day, as listed on the package insert, 88.9% of the time; significantly higher than the 5.6% of patients who used DQS six times per day, as instructed. The DQSLX group showed significant improvements in symptoms and fluorescein staining scores (23.3 ± 20.1 and 0.8 ± 1.7, respectively) compared with the baseline (37.8 ± 24.1 and 1.1 ± 1.5, p = 0.01 and <0.001, respectively). The TBUT in the DQSLX group (5.0 ± 2.5 s) did not significantly improve compared to the DQS group (4.5 ± 1.7 s) (p = 0.75). Fifty-one (94.4%) patients opted to continue DQSLX because of the pleasant feeling of the eye drops, long-lasting moisture, and less frequent administration. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a premixed ethanol ratio based on the same total heating value in a cylinder on the equivalence ratio distributions and the injected fuel droplet behavior in the cylinder of an RCCI engine. Next, engine simulations were performed with the spray-influenced factor obtained from the spray validation simulations to investigate the effect of the premixed ethanol ratio based on the same total heating value in a cylinder on the injected fuel atomization and the equivalence ratio distributions. The introduced total heating value was fixed at 595 J based on the lower heating value of diesel, 14 mg. The heating value of the premixed ethanol ratio varied from 0% to 40% based on the same total heating value in the cylinder in steps of 10%. It was revealed that when the premixed ethanol ratio based on the same total heating value in the cylinder was increased, the spray tip penetration value was reduced after 4 deg of diesel was injected because of the short injection duration and the small amount of diesel fuel used. The SMD value was also increased up to 32.58% with an increasing premixed ethanol ratio because of the low kinetic energy of the injected fuel, the short injection duration, the slow evaporation of the injected fuel and the low cylinder temperature. Posterior blepharitis and dry eye are common disorders with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a principal driver of their pathophysiology. Meibomian gland dysfunction is increasingly prevalent in older populations with contributory hormonal imbalances. The abnormal meibum in MGD has been documented to have an excess of cholesterol with a resultant disruption of the lipid layer of the tear film. This leads to tear film instability due to the inadequate trapping of the aqueous portion of the tear film with resultant evaporative dry eye. Significant morbidity may follow MGD with ocular surface inflammation disrupting both social and work function. Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory condition of the central face but can have ocular and systemic inflammatory associations. It is especially prevalent in North European populations and can have onset at any age, but commonly presents between thirty and fifty years of age. In ocular rosacea, MGD is a recognised manifestation as is dyslipidaemia. Ocular rosacea can predate cutaneous disease. As yet, there is no directly reported evidence of the efficacy of the early identification and treatment of ocular rosacea with associated dyslipidaemia and systemic inflammation. We posit that MGD in ocular rosacea sufferers may be a marker for dysregulated cholesterol synthesis and inflammation, and that statins maybe a potential therapy. This article introduces potential strategies to utilise ocular rosacea MGD as a possible marker for ophthalmologists, cardiologists, and primary healthcare physicians to treat rosacea-associated dyslipidaemia and systemic inflammation. This could aid in overall cardiovascular morbidity and mortality control for rosacea sufferers, potentially at an earlier age, while also addressing their tear film de-stabilisation through cholesterol lowering and inflammation reduction. Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial ocular surface disorder arising from numerous interrelated underlying pathologies that trigger a self-perpetuating cycle of instability, hyperosmolarity, and ocular surface damage. Associated ocular discomfort and visual disturbance contribute negatively to quality of life. Ocular surface inflammation has been increasingly recognised as playing a key role in the pathophysiology of chronic DED. Current readily available anti-inflammatory agents successfully relieve symptoms, but often without addressing the underlying pathophysiological mechanism. The NOD-like receptor protein-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome pathway has recently been implicated as a key driver of ocular surface inflammation, as reported in pre-clinical and clinical studies of DED. This review discusses the intimate relationship between DED and inflammation, highlights the involvement of the inflammasome in the development of DED, describes existing anti-inflammatory therapies and their limitations, and evaluates the potential of the inflammasome in the context of the existing anti-inflammatory therapeutic landscape as a therapeutic target for effective treatment of the disease. Our objective in this study was to analyze the aberrant neural regeneration activity in the cornea by means of in vivo confocal microscopy in systemic lupus erythematosus patients with concurrent dry eye disease. We examined 29 systemic lupus erythematosus patients and 29 age-matched healthy control subjects. Corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD, the number of fibers/mm2) and peripheral Langerhans cell morphology were lower (p < 0.05) in systemic lupus erythematosus patients compared to the control group. Interestingly, corneal nerve branch density, corneal nerve fiber length, corneal nerve fiber total branch density, and corneal nerve fiber area showed a negative correlation with disease duration. A negative correlation was also demonstrated between average corneal nerve fiber density and central Langerhans cell density. This is in line with our hypothesis that corneal somatosensory terminal Piezo2 channelopathy-induced impaired Piezo2–Piezo1 crosstalk not only disrupts regeneration and keeps transcription activated, but could lead to Piezo1 downregulation and cell activation on Langerhans cells when we consider a chronic path. Hence, Piezo2 containing mechanosensory corneal nerves and dendritic Langerhans cells could also be regarded as central players in shaping the ocular surface neuroimmune homeostasis through the Piezo system. Moreover, lost autoimmune neuroinflammation compensation, lost phagocytic self-eating capacity, and lost transcription regulation, not to mention autoantibodies against vascular heparin sulfate proteoglycans and phospholipids, could all contribute to the progressive fashion of dry eye disease in systemic lupus erythematosus. Dry eye disease is the most frequent non-refractive postoperative complication following refractive surgery. This prospective study investigated the development of dry eye disease after three common refractive laser surgeries: laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratectomy (LASEK). Patients who underwent uneventful refractive surgery in a single private medical center between May 2017 and September 2020 were included. Ocular surface disease was graded according to the Dry Eye Workshop severity (DEWS) classification. Patients were examined 6 months following refractive surgery. The analysis included 251 eyes of 137 patients: 64 eyes (36 patients) after LASEK, 90 eyes (48 patients) after PRK, and 97 eyes (53 patients) after LASIK. At 6 months post-surgery, the DEWS score was higher for the LASIK than the PRK and LASEK groups (p = 0.01). For the total cohort, severe DEWS score (grades 3 and 4) at 6 months post-surgery was correlated with female gender (p = 0.01) and to the amount of refractive correction (p < 0.001), but not to age (p = 0.87). In conclusion, LASIK surgery and female gender were associated with dry eye. The role of chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in the management of dry eye disease is still unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the efficacy and feasibility of CQ and HCQ in patients with dry eye disease. In February 2023, PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were accessed. Data from 462 patients (mean age 54.4 ± 2.8 years) were collected. Compared to baseline, the tear breakup time (p < 0.0001) and Schirmer I test (p < 0.0001) were significantly increased, and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI, p < 0.0001) and corneal staining (p < 0.0001) were significantly decreased at the last follow-up in the CQ/HCQ group. At the last follow-up, the OSDI was significantly lower in the CQ/HCQ group compared to the control group (p < 0.0001). Corneal staining was significantly greater in the control group compared to the CQ/HCQ group (p < 0.0001). The Schirmer I test showed no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.2). Background: This review aims to identify the current indications and gaps in the management of fat-soluble vitamins in pediatric patients with cholestasis. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Embase was performed. Two authors independently identified the most relevant studies published over the past 20 years up to February 2022, including original papers, narrative reviews, observational studies, clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The literature was screened, and preclinical studies about pathogenetic mechanisms were also included. Keywords searched for each fat-soluble vitamin (A, D, E and K), alone or in combination, were "cholestasis", "chronic liver disease", "biliary atresia", "malnutrition" and "nutritional needs". Studies published prior to the selected time range were searched manually and, when considered relevant, included within the list of references. Results: Eight hundred twenty-six articles were initially screened. From these, 48 studies were selected. A comparison of the recommended methods of supplementation for fat-soluble vitamins was then carried out. The causes of malabsorption were explained and current methods for defining deficiency and monitoring complications were summarized. Conclusions: According to the literature, children with cholestasis are at a higher risk of fat-soluble vitamin deficiency. Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Houttuynia eye drops (a Chinese traditional medicine) atomization treatment in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)-related dry eye disease (DED) patients. Methods: A total of 240 eligible patients diagnosed with MGD-related DED were assigned either Houttuynia eye drops or placebo for atomization once daily for four weeks in a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. Primary outcome evaluations used included eye symptom score (using the Chinese Dry Eye Questionnaire), meibum quality, and tear break-up time (TBUT), while safety evaluations included adverse events (AEs), visual acuity, and intraocular pressure monitoring. Indicators were measured at baseline as well as one week, two weeks, and four weeks after treatment. Results: Primary outcome measures of the Houttuynia group were improved compared with their placebo counterparts following four-week treatment. Eye symptom scores were significantly reduced relative to the baseline in the Houttuynia group (mean ± standard error of the mean, 9.00 ± 0.61) compared with the placebo group (6.29 ± 0.55; p = 0.0018). Reduction in meibum quality score in the Houttuynia group (0.91 ± 0.10) was also significantly higher compared with the placebo group (0.57 ± 0.10; p = 0.0091), while TBUT in the treatment group (6.30 ± 0.22) was also longer than in the latter (5.60 ± 0.24; p = 0.0192). No medication-related adverse events were observed. Conclusions: Atomization treatment with Houttuynia eye drops is both clinically and statistically effective for the treatment of mild to moderate MGD-related DED patients.
