Tea polyphenols, amino acids, soluble sugars, and other ingredients in fresh tea leaves are the key parameters of tea quality. In this research, a tea leaf ingredient estimation sensor was developed based on a multi-channel spectral sensor. The experiment showed that the device could effectively acquire 700-1000 nm spectral data of tea tree leaves and could display the ingredients of leaf samples in real time through the visual interactive interface. The spectral data of Fuding white tea tree leaves acquired by the detection device were used to build an ingredient content prediction model based on the ridge regression model and random forest algorithm. As a result, the prediction model based on the random forest algorithm with better prediction performance was loaded into the ingredient detection device. Verification experiment showed that the root mean square error (RMSE) and determination coefficient (R 2 ) in the prediction were, respectively, as follows: moisture content (1.61 and 0.35), free amino acid content (0.16 and 0.79), tea polyphenol content (1.35 and 0.28), sugar content (0.14 and 0.33), nitrogen content (1.15 and 0.91), and chlorophyll content (0.02 and 0.97). As a result, the device can predict some parameters with high accuracy (nitrogen, chlorophyll, free amino acid) but some of them with lower accuracy (moisture, polyphenol, sugar) based on the R 2 values. The tea leaf ingredient estimation sensor could realize rapid non-destructive detection of key ingredients affecting tea quality, which is conducive to real-time monitoring of the current quality of tea leaves, evaluating the status during tea tree growth, and improving the quality of tea production. The application of this research will be helpful for the automatic management of tea plantations.

During the process development for multigram-scale synthesis of olmesartan medoxomil (OM), two principal regioisomeric process-related impurities were observed along with the final active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). The impurities were identified as N-1- and N-2-(5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxolen-4-yl)methyl derivatives of OM. Both compounds, of which N-2 isomer of olmesartan dimedoxomil is a novel impurity of OM, were synthesized and fully characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and high-resolution mass spectrometry/electrospray ionization (HRMS/ESI). Their 1H, 13C and 15N nuclear magnetic resonance signals were fully assigned. The molecular structures of N-triphenylmethylolmesartan ethyl (N-tritylolmesartan ethyl) and N-tritylolmesartan medoxomil, the key intermediates in OM synthesis, were solved and refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The SCXRD study revealed that N-tritylated intermediates of OM exist exclusively as one of the two possible regioisomers. In molecular structures of these regioisomers, the trityl substituent is attached to the N-2 nitrogen atom of the tetrazole ring, and not to the N-1 nitrogen, as has been widely reported up to the present. This finding indicates that the reported structural formula of N-tritylolmesartan ethyl and N-tritylolmesartan medoxomil, as well as their systematic chemical names, must be revised. The careful analysis of literature spectroscopic data for other sartan intermediates and their analogs with 5-(biphenyl-2-yl)tetrazole moiety showed that they also exist exclusively as N-2-trityl regioisomers. The Upper Trinity River Basin (TRB) is the most populated river basin and one of the largest water suppliers in Texas. However, sediment and nutrient loads are reducing the capacity of reservoirs and degrading water quality. The objectives of this study are to calibrate and validate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model for ten study watersheds within the Upper TRB in order to assess nutrient loads into major reservoirs in the basin and to predict the effects of point source elimination and urbanization on nutrient loads through scenario analyses. SWAT performed reasonably well for the current condition except for two out of five tributaries in the Eagle Mountain watershed and total phosphorous in Richland-Chambers. The impacts of simulated scenarios varied within watersheds. Point-source elimination achieved reductions ranging from 0.3% to 24% in total phosphorus and 1% to 56% in total nitrogen received by the reservoirs. Population and development projections were used to examine the impacts of urbanization on each watershed. Projected urbanization in 2030 had large effects on simulated total phosphorus loads in some watersheds, ranging from a reduction of 1% to an increase of 111%. Projected urbanization also affected simulated total nitrogen loads, from a reduction of 3% to an increase of 24%. One limitation of this study is the lack of long-term, up-to-date water quality data due to discontinued water-quality monitoring stations. Although careful considerations were given to the adjustment of parameter values reflecting various aspects of the nutrient processes, further data collection will enhance modeling study for assessment of these watersheds' water resources and environmental problem. Over the last several years there has been a huge increase in the development and applications of new efficient organocatalysts for enantioselective pericyclic reactions, which represent one of the most powerful types of organic transformations. Among these processes are cycloaddition reactions (e.g., [3+2]; formal [3+3]; [4+2]; vinylogous [4+2] and 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions), which belong to the most utilized reactions in organic synthesis of complex nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocyclic molecules. This review presents the breakthrough realized in this field using chiral BINOL-derived phosphoric acids and N-triflyl phosphoramide organocatalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The accumulation of nutrients in rivers is a major cause of eutrophication, and the change in nutrient content is affected by a variety of factors. Taking the River Yi as an example, this study used wavelet analysis tools to examine the periodic changes in nutrients and environmental factors, as well as the relationship between nutrients and environmental factors. The results revealed that total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) exhibit multiscale oscillation features, with the dominating periods of 16-17, 26, and 57-60 months. The continuous wavelet transform revealed periodic fluctuation laws on multiple scales between nutrients and several environmental factors. Wavelet transform coherence (WTC) was performed on nutrients and environmental factors, and the results showed that temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) have a strong influence on nutrient concentration fluctuation. The WTC revealed a weak correlation between pH and TP. On a longer period, however, pH was positively correlated with TN. The flow was found to be positively correct with N and P, while N and P were found to be negatively correct with DO and electrical conductance (EC) at different scales. In most cases, TP was negatively correlated with 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) and permanganate index (COD Mn ). The correlation between TN and COD Mn and BOD 5 was limited, and no clear dominant phase emerged. In a nutshell, wavelet analysis revealed that water temperature, pH, DO, flow, EC, COD Mn , and BOD 5 had a pronounced influence on nutrient concentration in the River Yi at different time scales. In the case of the combination of environmental factors, pH and DO play the largest role in determining nutrient concentration.

In order to combat land desertification and to evaluate the soil quality of different cover land types, and thereby determine the best land use strategy for vegetation restoration, this research comprehensively analyzed the soil quality of different land use/cover types in the hilly sandy area of the Loess Plateau by using the Kruskal-Wallis test (K-W test) and principal component analysis (PCA) technique for order preference by the similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), and the potential ecological risk index ( RI ). The result indicated that the cropland abandonment over a period of time could improve the soil quality to a certain extent; however, the process of natural restoration was very slow compared with that of the planted mixed shrubs. The soil quality of all land use/cover types in the hilly sandy area of Youyu County clearly improved after 10-25 years of revegetation, but the degree of improvement varied greatly with the different planted species and their combinations. The low levels of soil organic matter, total nitrogen and available phosphorus were the major limiting factors affecting soil quality improvement under different land use/cover types, not metal toxicity. Pioneer species of H. rhamnoide , C. korshinskii and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica , etc. are vital to vegetation restoration of the study area. Revegetation using these species is therefore recommended to combat future desertification in this area.

To explore how environmental factors affected the plankton structure in the Yitong River, we surveyed the water environmental factors and plankton population in different seasons. The results showed high total nitrogen concentrations in Yitong River throughout the year, while the total phosphorus, water temperature (WT), and chemical oxygen demand in summer were significantly higher than those in other seasons ( p < 0.05), and the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and TN/TP ratio were significantly lower ( p < 0.01) than those in other seasons. There was no significant seasonal change in other environmental factors. Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, and Bacillariophyta were the main phytoplankton phylum, while Protozoa and Rotifera were the main zooplankton phylum. The abundance and biomass of zooplankton and phytoplankton in the summer were higher than those in other seasons. Non-Metric Multidimensional scaling methods demonstrated obvious seasonal variation of phytoplankton in summer compared to spring and winter, while the seasonal variation of the zooplankton community was not obvious. The results of the redundancy analysis showed that WT, DO and nitrate nitrogen were the main environmental factors affecting phytoplankton abundance. In contrast to environmental factors, phytoplankton was the main factor driving the seasonal variation of the zooplankton community structure. Cyanophyta were positively correlated with the changes in the plankton community.

With the continuous development of China's modern economy and agricultural society, the discharge of rural sewage has been recognized as a major threat to the safety of the rural ecological environment. This study discussed the purification efficiency of a tower-shaped integrated ecological purification device (TIEPD)-consisting of a measuring tank, detention tank and three-stage purification unit-towards various common pollutants in rural areas during operation and tested the stability and efficiency of the TIEPD under different rural life events (fair activity days and nonfair activity days) and different precipitation intensities (light rain, moderate rain and heavy rain). The results showed that the average removal efficiencies of the TIEPD towards chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 69%, 67%, 54% and 73%, respectively. The average effluent concentration of each pollutant can meet the standard of the discharge of pollutants in China. The system exhibited good stability in removing pollutants and good ecological and economic benefits. This study provides the treatment of domestic sewage in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and in mountainous areas of China and strengthens the prevention and control of rural nonpoint source pollution.

Many aquatic ecosystems are eutrophicated due to human inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus. Therefore, it is now considered important to establish nutrient criteria to prevent eutrophication. In this study, the water quality and biological data for 26 stations in the lower reaches of the Haihe River Basin were collected. The total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) ecological thresholds were derived from the threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN) and frequency distribution approach. The results showed that the TN threshold was 1.8 mg/L based on the TITAN and the TP threshold was 0.039 mg/L based on the frequency distribution approach. The TITAN also identified 29 indicator species of TN and 28 indicator species of TP. Based on these criteria, we found 73% sites with TN concentrations higher than the 1.8 mg/L. As for TP, 58% sites exceeded 0.039 mg/L. This study showed that most of the downstream areas of the Haihe River are subject to relatively serious disturbances. This finding could provide implications for identifying the water quality traits of and generating protection strategies for the Haihe River in Tianjin.

Conventional fertilization in the greenhouses of North China used excessive amounts of chemical and organic fertilizer, resulting in soil degradation and severe agricultural non-point source pollution. A nine-year study was conducted on a loamy clay soil in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, to investigate the effects of reduced-fertilizer input regimes on soil property, bacterial diversity, nitrogen (N) cycling and their interactions. There were four treatments, including high organic + chemical fertilizer application rate and three reduced-fertilizer treatments with swine manure, maize straw or no substitution of 50% chemical N. Treatments with reduced-fertilizer input prevented soil salinization and acidification as in local conventional fertilization after being treated for nine years. In comparison to chemical fertilizer only, swine manure or maize straw substitution maintained higher nutrient availability and soil organic C contents. Fertilizer input reduction significantly increased bacterial richness and shifted bacterial community after nine years, with decisive factors of EC, Olsen P and C/N ratio of applied fertilizer. Soil chemical characteristics (EC, pH and nutrients), aggregation and C/N ratio of applied fertilizer selected certain bacterial groups, as well as N-cycling functions. Reduced-fertilizer input decreased the potential nitrification and denitrification functioning of bacterial community, but only in organic substitution treatments. The results of this study suggested that fertilizer input reduction combined with organic C input has potential in reducing non-point source pollution and increasing N-use efficiency in greenhouse vegetable production in North China.

Nitrogen accelerates salt accumulation in the root zone of an euhalophyte, which might be beneficial for inhibiting the salt damage and interspecific competition for nutrients of non-halophytes in intercropping. However, the variations in the effect of euhalophyte/non-halophyte intercropping with nitrogen supply are poorly understood. Here, we selected the euhalophyte Suaeda salsa (suaeda) and non-halophyte Zea mays L. (maize) as the research objects, setting up three cropping patterns in order to explore the influence of nitrogen application on the intercropping effect in the suaeda/maize intercropping. The results showed that the biomass of maize in the intercropping was significantly lower than that in the monoculture, while for suaeda, it was higher in the intercropping than that in the monoculture. The biomass of maize under NO 3 - -N treatment performed significantly higher than that under no nitrogen treatment. Moreover, under suitable NO 3 - -N treatment, more salt ions (Na + , K + ) gathered around the roots of suaeda, which weakened the salt damage on maize growth. In the intercropping, the effect of NO 3 - -N on the maize growth was enhanced when compared with the non-significant effect of NH 4 + -N, but a positive effect of NH 4 + -N on suaeda growth was found. Therefore, the disadvantage of maize growth in the intercropping suaeda/maize might be caused by interspecific competition to a certain extent, providing an effective means for the improvement of saline-alkali land by phytoremediation.

Global warming and eutrophication are the main factors driving the development of cyanobacterial dominance in aquatic ecosystems. We used a model linking water temperature, oxygen saturation, concentrations of PO 4 3- , NO 3 - , NH 4 + , total dissolved iron (TDFe), and SO 4 2- to cyanobacteria to test the turnover patterns of cyanobacterial dominance of non-nitrogen-fixing (chroococcal species) and nitrogen-fixing (filamentous diazotrophic) species. Statistical analysis was performed using decision trees. The dominance patterns of the two morphologically and ecologically distinct cyanobacterial species were associated with different environmental factors. However, SO 4 2- was the most important factor that explained whether non-nitrogen-fixing or nitrogen-fixing species would dominate. Other important factors were water temperature, phosphate concentration, and oxygen saturation. The model for dominance of non-nitrogen-fixing species used SO 4 2- , PO 4 3- , and water temperature (upper layers), and SO 4 2- , the ratio of PO 4 3- /NH 4 + , and oxygen saturation (bottom layers). In contrast, water temperature, SO 4 2- , and NH 4 + in the upper layers and SO 4 2- , NH 4 + , and water temperature in the bottom layers were used for the dominance of nitrogen-fixing species. The dominance of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae was explained by different sets of variables, indicating the presence of different strains of this species. The other cyanobacteria species showed dominance patterns that could be explained by one set of variables. As cyanobacterial blooms proliferate due to climate change, it is important to know which factors, in addition to phosphorus and nitrogen, are crucial for the mass development of the various cyanobacterial species.

Synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizers and their increased production and utilization have played a great role in increasing crop yield and in meeting the food demands resulting from population growth. Nitrate (NO 3 - ) is the common form of nitrogen absorbed by plants. It has high water solubility and low retention by soil particles, making it prone to leaching and mobilization by surface water, which can seriously contaminate biological environments and affect human health. Few methods exist to measure nitrate in the soil. The development of ion selective sensors provides knowledge about the dynamics of nitrate in the soil in real time, which can be very useful for nitrate management. The objective of this study is to analyze the performance of three commercial probes (Nutrisens, RIKA and JXCT) under the same conditions. The performance was analyzed with respect to electrical conductivity (EC) (0-50 mS/cm) and nitrate concentration in aqueous solution and in sand (0-180 ppm NO 3 - ) at 35% volumetric soil moisture. Differences were shown among probes when studying their response to variations of the EC and, notably, only the Nutrisens probe provided coherent accurate measurements. In the evaluation of nitrate concentration in liquid solution, all probes proved to be highly sensitive. Finally, in the evaluation of all probes' response to modifications in nitrate concentration in sand, the sensitivity decreased for all probes, with the Nutrisens probe the most sensitive and the other two probes almost insensitive.

Homogenous spatial distribution of fermentation characteristics, local anaerobic conditions, and large amounts of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions are common problems in large-scale aerobic composting systems. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a semi-membrane covering on the spatial homogeneity and efficiency of fermentation in aerobic composting systems. In the covered group, the pile was covered with a semi-membrane, while in the non-covered group (control group), the pile was uncovered. The covered group entered the high-temperature period earlier and the spatial gradient difference in the group was smaller compared with the non-covered group. The moisture content loss ratio (5.91%) in the covered group was slower than that in the non-covered group (10.78%), and the covered group had a more homogeneous spatial distribution of water. The degradation rate of organic matter in the non-covered group (11.39%) was faster than that in the covered group (10.21%). The final germination index in the covered group (85.82%) was higher than that of the non-covered group (82.79%) and the spatial gradient difference in the covered group was smaller. Compared with the non-covered group, the oxygen consumption rate in the covered group was higher. The GHG emissions (by 30.36%) and power consumption in the covered group were reduced more significantly. The spatial microbial diversity of the non-covered group was greater compared with the covered group. This work shows that aerobic compost covered with a semi-membrane can improve the space homogeneity and efficiency of fermentation.

Islands are characterized by a lack of land and freshwater resources, public finances, and technical personnel. As a result, domestic sewage may not be effectively treated, which can lead to major pollution on islands and in the surrounding sea areas. In this study, a pilot treatment of domestic sewage was conducted using an ecological treatment process (i.e., a constructed wetland and ecological pond) in an abandoned pond located on Haimen Island, Fujian Province, China. The pollutant indicators were monitored to analyze this treatment method at different treatment stages. The results showed that the combination of multiple ecological treatment processes had favorable treatment effects on various pollutants in the sewage. The treatment rates of the chemical oxygen demand (COD Cr ) and suspended solids (SS) surpassed 88%. The treatment rate of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and fecal coliform surpassed 93%, and all the indicators met or were close to the level I B emission standards for urban sewage treatment plants. Different treatment stages have different treatment effects on different pollutants. The constructed wetland played an important role in sewage treatment through plant absorption, substrate adsorption, sedimentation, and microbial decomposition, particularly for the TP, COD Cr , and BOD 5 . In contrast, algal photosynthesis in the ecological pond produced a large amount of dissolved oxygen, and the treatment effect was highest for the TN and NH 3 -N. The treatment effects on the fecal coliform in the constructed wetland and ecological pond were very significant. Ecological treatment processes based on the combination of a constructed wetland and ecological pond have favorable treatment effects, low construction and maintenance costs, and pollution-free conditions, which are suitable for application in island areas.

The quantification of the effects of global changes on soil nutrients is crucial for the prediction of future terrestrial ecosystem changes. Combined with 100 articles and 1129 observations from all over China, the meta-analysis method was applied to explore the effects of various global change factors on soil nutrients, including precipitation change, nitrogen addition, warming, and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentration rise. Results indicated that among all the individual drivers, soil nutrients are most sensitive to N addition. Significant positive effects of N addition on carbon concentration (+4.6%), nitrogen concentration (+6.1%), organic carbon (+5.0%), and available nitrogen (+74.6%) were observed considering all the land-use types. The results highlighted that the combined and interactive effects of multiple global change factors on soil nutrients were of great significance. The interaction of the two drivers is usually additive, followed by antagonism and synergy. Our findings contribute to better understanding of how soil nutrients will change under future global change.

Root C: N: P stoichiometry affect the geochemical cycles of ecosystems, while a few studies were conducted on it and its relationship with soil nutrients, especially in the non-growing season. In this study, we investigated the root C:N:P stoichiometry of alpine steppe(AS), alpine meadow steppe(AMS), and alpine meadow(AM) in April (non-growing season) and August(growing season) in 2013. The results showed that: (1) There were no differences in root C, N, P, C: N, C:P, and N:P with a depth of AS in April. However, root C and C: N increased with depth, while N and N:P decreased with a depth of AS in August. In both months, the variation of root C, N, P, C: N with depth in AM was consistent with that of AS in August, and root C at deep layer decreased in August, which indicated roots of AM began to grow in April No significant difference of root C, N, C: N and N:P with depth was found, while P and C:P varied between the two months of AMS. Root P content at 20-30 cm was higher than that of other soil layers in April, which was significantly higher than that of AS, while no significant difference was found in August. (2) Grassland types had significant effects on soil nutrients (except TP) at 0-10 cm and 20-30 cm soil layers. (3) No significant correlation between soil nutrients and root C, N, P, C: N, C: P, and N: P was found in April. Soil TN and AN content had a significant positive correlation with root N: P, indicating that soil nitrogen was the primary N source of the root. Soil TP and AP were significantly negatively correlated with root C and C: N in August. This study can provide basic data and provide theoretical support for further understanding the role of grassland roots in nutrient cycling.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygen/nitrogen derivatives released into the atmosphere can alternate between a gas phase and a particulate phase, further affecting their environmental behavior and fate. The gas/particulate partition coefficient (KP) is generally used to characterize such partitioning equilibrium. In this study, the correlation between log KP of fifty PAH derivatives and their n-octanol/air partition coefficient (log KOA) was first analyzed, yielding a strong linear correlation (R2 = 0.801). Then, Gaussian 09 software was used to calculate quantum chemical descriptors of all chemicals at M062X/6-311+G (d,p) level. Both stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR) and support vector machine (SVM) methods were used to develop the quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) prediction models of log KP. They yield better statistical performance (R2 > 0.847, RMSE < 0.584) than the log KOA model. Simulation external validation and cross validation were further used to characterize the fitting performance, predictive ability, and robustness of the models. The mechanism analysis shows intermolecular dispersion interaction and hydrogen bonding as the main factors to dominate the distribution of PAH derivatives between the gas phase and particulate phase. The developed models can be used to predict log KP values of other PAH derivatives in the application domain, providing basic data for their ecological risk assessment.

A municipal wastewater treatment plant plays an important role in treating urban sewage and reducing the quantity of pollutants discharged into rivers. However, the energy consumption of the municipal wastewater treatment industry is large. High energy consumption indirectly produces ecological damage, accelerates the energy crisis, and increases carbon emissions. For energy conservation and emission reduction in wastewater treatment plants, it is first necessary to identify the main factors influencing energy consumption. Electricity consumption accounts for more than 80% of the energy consumption of wastewater treatment plants. Wastewater quantity and wastewater quality have become the key influencing factors of energy conservation and consumption reduction in wastewater treatment plants. In this study, a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Northeast China was selected as the research object, and the measured data, such as air temperature, wastewater quantity, wastewater quality, and electricity consumption of the plant from 2017 to 2020 were statistically analyzed to explore the influences of temperature and wastewater quantity and wastewater quality indicators of influent and effluent on energy consumption. Firstly, the range of influent quantity in the wastewater treatment plant was large. The influent quantity in summer was high because some rainwater entered the sewage treatment plant. In winter, average daily electricity consumption (ADEC) was higher than that in summer. The relationship between ADEC and the wastewater quantity showed a positive correlation, and ADEC slowly increased with the increase in wastewater quantity. Electricity consumption per unit of wastewater (UEC) was negatively correlated with the wastewater quantity, but the correction coefficient in winter was larger than that in summer. Secondly, the ranges of chemical oxygen demand (COD Cr ) and ammonia nitrogen in influent were large, and the ranges of COD Cr and ammonia nitrogen in effluent were small. Influent COD Cr concentration was negatively correlated with influent ammonia nitrogen concentration. ADEC increased slightly with the increase in influent COD Cr concentration. In winter, the increasing trend of ADEC with the influent COD Cr concentration was higher than that in the summer. The increasing trend of UEC with the increase in influent COD concentration in summer was more significant than that in winter. Thirdly, influent COD Cr in 11.6% of the samples exceeded the corresponding designed value, and influent ammonia nitrogen concentration in 41.4% of the samples exceeded the corresponding designed value. Effluent COD Cr in 10.6% of the samples exceeded the First Level Class B standard in "Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants (GB18918-2002)", and unqualified COD Cr in 94% of the effluent samples was ascribed to the unqualified ammonia nitrogen concentration in the influent samples. The electricity consumption level under abnormal conditions was higher than that under normal conditions. Fourthly, ADEC was positively correlated with the average daily COD Cr reduction. The correction coefficient of ADEC with average daily COD Cr reduction was greater in winter than that in summer. Fifthly, the average electricity consumption per unit of wastewater was close to the national average energy consumption, displaying the characteristics of high energy consumption in winter and low energy consumption in summer. The correlation analysis results of unit electricity consumption and temperature showed that when it was below 0 °C, the lower the temperature, the higher the electricity consumption. In Northeast China, the influences of seasons and temperatures on the electricity consumption of sewage plants were obvious. Accordingly, it is necessary to implement the diversion of rainwater and sewage, reduce the discharge of unqualified wastewater from enterprises, and take thermal insulation measures in winter. In addition, activated sludge microorganisms suitable for a low temperature area and the optimal scheduling of sewage pipe networks can also improve the operation and management of sewage treatment plants.

In order to understand the potential effects of atmospheric nitrogen and phosphorus deposition on the water quality of the Middle Route Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, samples of dry and wet deposition of atmospheric nitrogen and phosphorus, meteorological factors, and water quality factors were analyzed out to investigate in the Middle Route Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion in Henan Province from October 2018 to October 2020. The variation characteristics of atmospheric nitrogen and phosphorus deposition with time in the Henan section of the main canal are revealed, and the influence of atmospheric dry and wet deposition on the water quality of the middle line is discussed. It was found that the total nitrogen (TN) sedimentation flux has obvious seasonal variation, which was consistent with the variation trend of rainfall, and increased with the increase of rainfall. Nitrogen and phosphorus deposition was significantly correlated with water factors. The effects of meteorological factors and nitrogen and phosphorus deposition on water quality variation reached 18%. The contribution rate and ecological impact of atmospheric nitrogen and phosphorus deposition on water pollution of main channels will be increasing, which needs to be paid enough attention to.

Visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) is a fast and simple method increasingly used in soil science. This study aimed to investigate VIS-NIRS applicability to predict soil black carbon (BC) content and the method's suitability for rapid BC-level screening. Forty-three soil samples were collected in an agricultural area remaining under strong industrial impact. Soil texture, pH, total nitrogen (N tot ) and total carbon (C tot ), soil organic carbon (SOC), soil organic matter (SOM), and BC were analyzed. Samples were divided into three classes according to BC content (low, medium, and high BC content) and scanned in the 350-2500 nm range. A support vector machine (SVM) was used to develop prediction models of soil properties. Partial least-square with SVM (PLS-SVM) was used to classify samples for screening purposes. Prediction models of soil properties were at best satisfactory (N tot : R 2 = 0.76, RMSE CV = 0.59 g kg -1 , RPIQ = 0.65), due to large kurtosis and data skewness. The RMSE CV were large (16.86 g kg -1 for SOC), presumably due to the limited number of samples available and the wide data spread. Given our results, the VIS-NIRS method seems efficient for classifying soil samples from an industrialized area according to BC content level (training accuracy of 77% and validation accuracy of 81%).

Different land use practices may improve soil quality or lead to soil deterioration. Recently, environmental problems, such as heavy pollution and soil erosion, have led to serious land degradation in the Taojia River basin. In this study, we explored the soil fertility characteristics (mechanical composition; pH; soil organic matter (SOM); soil total nitrogen (TN); and the activity of four enzymes, i.e., urease, hydrogen peroxide, alkaline phosphatase, and sucrose enzymes) under different types of land use in the Taojia River basin. Soil samples were taken from 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-40 cm depths from four different land use types that were widely used in the Taojia river basin, including cultivated land, vegetable fields, woodlands, and wastelands. The results showed that the soil enzyme activity and the constituents of the soil were closely related and significantly affected each other ( p < 0.05). Woodland soil exhibited the highest content of SOM in all soil depths. Soil total nitrogen mainly depended on the accumulation of biomass and the decomposition intensity of organic matter, so the changes in TN followed the trends of the changes in SOM. Woodland soil showed an improved mechanical composition. We were also able to observe an increased clay content in woodland soil. Woodland soil also exhibited the reversal of soil desertification and an increase in nutrient/water retention capacity. Therefore, an increase in woodland areas would be an appropriate goal in terms of land use in order to improve the eco-environmental quality of the Taojia River basin.

Lettuce is an important vegetable in the human diet and is commonly consumed for salad. It is a source of vitamin A, which plays a vital role in human health. Improvements in lettuce production will be needed to ensure a stable and economically available supply in the future. The influence of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) compounds on the growth dynamics of four hydroponically grown lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars (Black Seeded Simpson, Parris Island, Rex RZ, and Tacitus) in tubs and in a nutrient film technique (NFT) system were studied. Hyperspectral images (HSI) were captured at plant harvest. Models developed from the HSI data were used to estimate nutrient levels of leaf tissues by employing principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares regression (PLSR), multivariate regression, and variable importance projection (VIP) methods. The optimal wavebands were found in six regions, including 390.57-438.02, 497-550, 551-600, 681.34-774, 802-821, and 822-838 nm for tub-grown lettuces and four regions, namely 390.57-438.02, 497-550, 551-600, and 681.34-774 nm for NFT-system-grown lettuces. These fitted models' levels showed high accuracy (R2=0.85-0.99) in estimating the growth dynamics of the studied lettuce cultivars in terms of nutrient content. HSI data of the lettuce leaves and applied N solutions demonstrated a direct positive correlation with an accuracy of 0.82-0.99 for blue and green regions in 400-575 nm wavebands. The results proved that, in most of the tested multivariate regression models, HSI data of freshly cut leaves correlated well with laboratory-measured data.

This study investigated the effect of different doses of fertilization with biomass combustion ash ( Salix viminalis L. willow) on changes in the biological, chemical, and physical properties of soil. The experiment was carried out on podzolic and chernozem soils in a one-way field experiment (fertilization dose: control (without fertilization), NPK (nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)), 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 kg K 2 O ha -1 ). The biomass ash was characterized by a pH value of 12.83 ± 0.68 and a high content of macronutrients. The samples were collected from 0-5, 10-15, and 20-25 cm soil layers under the cultivation of spring barley ( Hordeum vulgare L) cv. Planet in April and August 2021. Mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was used for microbiological analyses, which revealed the presence of 53 culturable species from 11 genera: Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Paenibacillus, Lysinibacillus, Pseudarthrobacter, Arthrobacter, Staphylococcus, Paenarthrobacter, Micrococcus, Rhodococcus , and Flavobacterium. The podzolic and chernozem soils exhibited the presence of 28 and 44 culturable species, respectively. The study showed an increase in the number of microorganisms in the top layer of the soil profile. However, the number of bacteria decreased at the depths of 10-15 cm and 20-25 cm. With depth, the bulk density (BD) and moisture increased.

Dredged material dumping is an activity that causes some of the greatest changes in coastal waters. It results in the need to regularly monitor the properties of seawater related to water quality. In this study, we present the first wide-ranging attempt to correlate seawater turbidity and suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations within dumping sites and adjacent waters on the basis of in situ measurements. In the years 2019-2020, we examined four dumping sites, namely Darłowo, Gdynia, Gdańsk, and DCT, located in Polish coastal waters of the Baltic Sea, in the course of four measurement campaigns conducted in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The measurements were conducted using a turbidity sensor to determine the turbidity, in formazin turbidity units (FTU), a spectrophotometer to determine the concentrations of nutrients (total phosphorus (P-tot), phosphate phosphorus (P-PO 4 -3 ), total nitrogen (N-tot), ammonium nitrogen (N-NH 4 + ), and nitrate nitrogen (N-NO 3 - )), as well as glass microfiber filters to determine the concentrations of SPM. The analysis of the relationship between the turbidity and SPM within the dumping sites in comparison to reference points showed that the dumping sites are very complex waters and that the issue must be approached locally. The highest turbidity values were registered in the spring, and they correlated linearly with the SPM concentrations (R 2 = 0.69). Moreover, we performed a statistical cluster analysis to illustrate the similarities between sampling points in the four dumpsites based on nutrient concentrations. We conclude that the influence of the dumping sites on the local bio-optical and chemical properties significantly exceeds their borders and spreads to the adjacent waters. Nutrient concentrations in many cases exceeded the legal policy limits.

Traditional soil nitrogen detection methods have the characteristics of being time-consuming and having an environmental pollution effect. We urgently need a rapid, easy-to-operate, and non-polluting soil nitrogen detection technology. In order to quickly measure the nitrogen content in soil, a new method for detecting the nitrogen content in soil is presented by using a near-infrared spectrum technique and random forest regression (RF). Firstly, the experiment took the soil by the Xunsi River in the area of Hubei University of Technology as the research object, and a total of 143 soil samples were collected. Secondly, NIR spectral data from 143 soil samples were acquired, and chemical and physical methods were used to determine the content of nitrogen in the soil. Thirdly, the raw spectral data of soil samples were denoised by preprocessing. Finally, a forecast model for the soil nitrogen content was developed by using the measured values of components and modeling algorithms. The model was optimized by adjusting the changes in the model parameters and Gini coefficient (∆Gini), and the model was compared with the back propagation (BP) and support vector machine (SVM) models. The results show that: the RF model modeling set prediction R 2 C is 0.921, the RMSEC is 0.115, the test set R 2 P is 0.83, and the RMSEP is 0.141; the detection of the soil nitrogen content can be realized by using a near-infrared spectrum technique and random forest algorithm, and its prediction accuracy is better than that of the BP and SVM models; using ∆ Gini to optimize the RF modeling data, the spectral information of the soil nitrogen content can be extracted, and the data redundancy can be reduced effectively.

Soil moisture, soil organic carbon, and nitrogen content prediction are considered significant fields of study as they are directly related to plant health and food production. Direct estimation of these soil properties with traditional methods, for example, the oven-drying technique and chemical analysis, is a time and resource-consuming approach and can predict only smaller areas. With the significant development of remote sensing and hyperspectral (HS) imaging technologies, soil moisture, carbon, and nitrogen can be estimated over vast areas. This paper presents a generalized approach to predicting three different essential soil contents using a comprehensive study of various machine learning (ML) models by considering the dimensional reduction in feature spaces. In this study, we have used three popular benchmark HS datasets captured in Germany and Sweden. The efficacy of different ML algorithms is evaluated to predict soil content, and significant improvement is obtained when a specific range of bands is selected. The performance of ML models is further improved by applying principal component analysis (PCA), a dimensional reduction method that works with an unsupervised learning method. The effect of soil temperature on soil moisture prediction is evaluated in this study, and the results show that when the soil temperature is considered with the HS band, the soil moisture prediction accuracy does not improve. However, the combined effect of band selection and feature transformation using PCA significantly enhances the prediction accuracy for soil moisture, carbon, and nitrogen content. This study represents a comprehensive analysis of a wide range of established ML regression models using data preprocessing, effective band selection, and data dimension reduction and attempt to understand which feature combinations provide the best accuracy. The outcomes of several ML models are verified with validation techniques and the best- and worst-case scenarios in terms of soil content are noted. The proposed approach outperforms existing estimation techniques.

In this study, the effect of cold plasma (CP) on the physicochemical and biological properties of red wine was investigated in comparison with the effects of the conventional preservation method and the combined method. In addition, the effect of storage time after the application of each of the analyzed methods was evaluated. The study examined the effects of the different preservation methods on the pH, color, phenolic content, antioxidant activity and microbiological purity of the red wine. Chemometric analysis was used to discover the relationship between the preservation method used and wine quality. In the wine samples tested, a reduction in phenolic compounds and a decrease in antioxidant activity were noted after storage. This effect was mildest for preservation methods with the addition of potassium metabisulphite and those in which a mixture of helium and nitrogen was used as the working gas. On a positive note, the CP treatment did not affect the color of the wine in a way perceptible to the consumer: ∆E*-1.12 (He/N 2 ; 5 min). In addition, the lowest growth of microorganisms was detected in the CP-treated samples. This indicates the potential of cold plasma as an alternative method to the use of potassium metabisulfite in wine production, which may contribute to its wider use in the alcohol industry in the future.

Metal(loid)s can promote the spread and enrichment of antibiotic resistance in the environmental ecosystem through a co-selection effect. Little is known about the ecological effects of entering antibiotics into the environment with long-term metal(loid)s' resistance profiles. Here, cow manure containing oxytetracycline (OTC) or sulfadiazine (SA) at four concentrations (0 (as control), 1, 10, and 100 mg/kg) was loaded to a maize cropping system in an area with high a arsenicals geological background. Results showed that exogenous antibiotics entering significantly changed the nutrient conditions, such as the concentration of nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and available phosphorus in the maize rhizosphere soil, while total arsenic and metals did not display any differences in antibiotic treatments compared with control. Antibiotics exposure significantly influenced nitrate and nitrite reductase activities to reflect the inhibition of denitrification rates but did not affect the soil urease and acid phosphatase activities. OTC treatment also did not change soil dehydrogenase activities, while SA treatment posed promotion effects, showing a tendency to increase with exposure concentration. Both the tested antibiotics (OTC and SA) decreased the concentration of arsenite and arsenate in rhizosphere soil, but the inhibition effects of the former were higher than that of the latter. Moreover, antibiotic treatment impacted arsenite and arsenate levels in maize root tissue, with positive effects on arsenite and negative effects on arsenate. As a result, both OTC and SA treatments significantly increased bioconcentration factors and showed a tendency to first increase and then decrease with increasing concentration. In addition, the treatments decreased translocation capacity of arsenic from roots to shoots and showed a tendency to increase translocation factors with increasing concentration. Microbial communities with arsenic-resistance profiles may also be resistant to antibiotics entering.

The extremely serious urban runoff eutrophication and black odorous phenomenon pose a significant threat to the lake aquatic ecosystem, resulting in a significantly increased frequency, magnitude, and duration of algal blooms in lakes. However, few investigations focus on small tributaries of the lakes, despite the ubiquity and potential local importance of these runoffs. Thus, the labile sediments NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, PO 4 3- , Fe 2+ , and S 2- in black odorous runoff at Wuxi were overall analyzed at high resolution using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). The variations in labile N, P, Fe, and S distribution profiles at different sampling sites indicated high heterogeneity in sediments. The concentrations of labile P, Fe, and S showed synchronous variation from the sediment-water interface (SWI) up to -20 mm along sediment profiles. Moreover, there existed a significant positive correlation among labile P, Fe, and S concentrations ( p < 0.05), which might represent typical odor compounds' FeS and H 2 S synchronous release process in urban runoff. Furthermore, the apparent diffusion fluxes of labile P, Fe, and S across the SWI were all released upward, while fluxes of NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N release downward, indicating the sediments act as source and sink of P and N, respectively. Sediments' potential for endogenous P and N fractions release results in the black-odorous water, and sediment finally abouchement the Taihu, which intensifies further lake eutrophication phenomenon.

Ecological water replenishment via interbasin water diversion projects provides opportunities for ecological river restoration. Untangling water quality changes, microbiota dynamics, and community functions is necessary for sustainable ecological management. Using the Yongding River as a case study, we monitored the water quality and applied genomic sequencing to investigate microbial communities of the river in different stages after ecological water replenishment. Our results showed that river water quality represented by chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) did not change significantly during months after water replenishment. The bacterial community composition varied in different months and river subsections. The Cyanobium &#95;PCC-6307, CL500-29 marine group, and Pseudomonas were dominant in the later stages after water replenishment. Water temperature, pH, and nutrient levels significantly affected the microbial community composition, and ecological restoration may have the potential to influence nitrogen cycling in the river. Our results can provide ecological insights into sustainable water quality maintenance and river management following ecological restoration enabled by ecological water replenishment.

The efficient handling of nitrogen has become a critical issue in modern agriculture, from a financial standpoint, as well as in regard to reducing the environmental impacts of using an excessive amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Manure compost is useful for maintaining or raising soil chemical levels without excessive NO3- accumulation; however, for the best grain yield, it should be combined with N fertilizer. Via this study, we aimed to develop an optimal decision support system that indicates when to initiate fertilization based on nitrogen-limited (N-limited) crop growth dynamics. An optimal nitrogen fertilizer (N-fertilizer) management system increases crop yield while maintaining a balance between fertilizer supply and crop demand. This study used the N-limited crop growth model (LINTUL3) to develop an optimal decision support system. In this work, we formulated and resolved two optimization challenges: (i) maximization of biomass growth; and (ii) maximization of growth with the least cost paid on N-fertilizer and its application. Furthermore, two case studies were developed based on the number of fields: (i) optimization for a single field, and (ii) optimization for multiple fields. In the case of multiple fields, it is hypothesized that a fertilizer treatment for one field can leak to other fields and affect the nitrogen dynamics of different fields. Finally, numerical simulations were carried out supporting the theory developed in the paper. The simulations showed that when the proposed work was employed to achieve the goal of optimal nitrogen management for a crop, a 28% to 53% increase in biomass growth under certain scenarios was attained.

The excessive proliferation of cyanobacteria in surface waters is a widespread problem worldwide, leading to the contamination of drinking water sources. Short- and long-term solutions for managing cyanobacterial blooms are needed for drinking water supplies. The goal of this research was to investigate the cyanobacteria community composition using shotgun metagenomics in a short term, in situ mesocosm experiment of two lakes following their coagulation with ferric sulfate (Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) as an option for source water treatment. Among the nutrient paramenters, dissolved nitrogen was related to Microcystis in both Missisquoi Bay and Petit Lac St. François, while the presence of Synechococcus was related to total nitrogen, dissolved nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, and dissolved phosphorus. Results from the shotgun metagenomic sequencing showed that Dolichospermum and Microcystis were the dominant genera in all of the mesocosms in the beginning of the sampling period in Missisquoi Bay and Petit Lac St. François, respectively. Potentially toxigenic genera such as Microcystis were correlated with intracellular microcystin concentrations. A principal component analysis showed that there was a change of the cyanobacterial composition at the genus level in the mesocosms after two days, which varied across the studied sites and sampling time. The cyanobacterial community richness and diversity did not change significantly after its coagulation by Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 in all of the mesocosms at either site. The use of Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 for an onsite source water treatment should consider its impact on cyanobacterial community structure and the reduction of toxin concentrations.

The Lake in Central Park (LCP) and Prospect Park Lake (PPL) in New York City (NYC), USA, are lakes within two of the most visited parks in the USA. Five years of nearshore sampling of these systems revealed extremely elevated levels of cyanobacteria and the toxin, microcystin, with microcystin levels averaging 920 µg L−1 and chlorophyll a from cyanobacterial (cyano-chla) populations averaging 1.0 × 105 µg cyano-chla L−1. Both lakes displayed elevated levels of orthophosphate (DIP) relative to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) during summer months when DIN:DIP ratios were < 1. Nutrient addition and dilution experiments revealed that N consistently limited cyanobacterial populations but that green algae were rarely nutrient limited. Experimental additions of public drinking water that is rich in P and, to a lesser extent N, to lake water significantly enhanced cyanobacterial growth rates in experiments during which N additions also yielded growth enhancement. Collectively, this study demonstrates that the extreme microcystin levels during blooms in these highly trafficked lakes represent a potential human and animal health threat and that supplementation of these artificial lakes with public drinking water to maintain water levels during summer may promote the intensity and N limitation of blooms.

Covalently-bonded atoms of Groups IV-VII tend to have anisotropic charge distributions, the electronic densities being less on the extensions of the bonds (σ-holes) than in the intervening regions. These σ-holes often give rise to positive electrostatic potentials through which the atom can interact attractively and highly directionally with negative sites (e.g., lone pairs, π electrons and anions), forming noncovalent complexes. For Group VII this is called "halogen bonding" and has been widely studied both computationally and experimentally. For Groups IV-VI, it is only since 2007 that positive σ-holes have been recognized as explaining many noncovalent interactions that have in some instances long been known experimentally. There is considerable experimental evidence for such interactions involving groups IV and VI, particularly in the form of surveys of crystal structures. However we have found less extensive evidence for Group V. Accordingly we have now conducted a survey of the Cambridge Structural Database for crystalline close contacts of trivalent nitrogen, phosphorus and arsenic with six different types of electronegative atoms in neighboring molecules. We have found numerous close contacts that fit the criteria for σ-hole interactions. Urban river pollution is considered a 'necessary evil' consequence of disproportionate developmental expansion in metropolises. Unprecedented expansion and anthropic activities lead to the deterioration of urban rivers with municipal and industrial sewage. The construction of sluices is one of the irrefutable parts of the process. In order to prevent floods and drought, many cities build sluices and dams in rivers to balance water quantity in different seasons. To explore the change characteristics of the water quality in urban rivers after the construction of sluices and dams, the change in the total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations upstream and downstream of rivers was investigated under the condition of sluices closure in Wuxi. According to the results, when the sluices were closed, the pollutants of TP and TN would accumulate upstream in rivers, which caused the water quality in the upper reaches to be worse than that in the lower reaches. Specifically, the TN and TP concentrations downstream of urban rivers in Wuxi were approximately 14.42% and 13.80% lower than those upstream when the sluices were closed. Additionally, the water quality in urban rivers was usually better in summer and autumn than in the other seasons, showing obvious seasonality after the construction of the sluices. The research will provide a theoretical basis for future sluice operation and the water resources management of urban rivers.

In this paper, the distribution characteristics of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and fractions of nitrogen and phosphorus in water and surface sediments of the Pi and Shiting rivers in the dry and wet seasons were studied by molybdenum blue/ascorbic acid spectrophotometry and Standard Measurements and Testing (SMT). Correlation analysis, cluster analysis and principal component analysis were used to identified nitrogen and phosphorus pollution sources. The results showed that: (1) nitrogen and phosphorus in water and surface sediments in the study area were at different levels. (2) In the Pi river, the decomposition of animal and plant residues, the leachate from the accumulation of aquaculture wastewater and urban domestic sewage were the main sources of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, while in the Shiting river, the unreasonable application of pesticides and fertilizers, the degradation of animal and plant residues, agricultural wastewater from agricultural drainage channels, industrial production wastewater and the weathering of agricultural wastes had a great impact on the nitrogen and phosphorus pollution. The results in this study provide reliable experimental data and a reference to local relevant departments for the implementation of effective control measures for the reduction of the nitrogen and phosphorus pollution load in the river basin.

The Taiyangshan Wetland, a valuable wetland resource in the arid zone of central Ningxia, is critical for flood storage and drought resistance, climate regulation, and biodiversity protection. Nevertheless, the community structure and diversity of bacterioplankton in the Taiyangshan Wetland remains unclear. High-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the differences in bacterioplankton structure and major determinants in the Taiyangshan Wetland from April to October 2020. The composition and diversity of the bacterioplankton community varied significantly in different sampling periods but showed negligible differences across lake regions. Meanwhile, the relative abundances of bacterioplankton Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, Tenericutes, Epsilonbacteraeota, and Patescibacteria were significantly different in different sampling periods, while the relative abundances of Cyanobacteria in different lake regions were quite different. Network analysis revealed that the topological attributes of co-occurrence pattern networks of bacterioplankton were high, and bacterioplankton community compositions were complicated in the month of July. A mantel test revealed that the bacterioplankton community in the entire wetland was affected by water temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, fluoride, and sulfate. The bacterioplankton community structure was affected by ten environmental parameters (e.g., water temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and permanganate index) in April, while the bacterioplankton community was only related to 1~2 environmental parameters in July and October. The bacterioplankton community structure in Lake Region IV was related to seven environmental parameters, including dissolved oxygen, pH, total nitrogen, and chemical oxygen demand, whereas the bacterioplankton community structures in the other three lake regions were related to two environmental parameters. This study facilitates the understanding of the bacterioplankton community in wetlands in arid areas and provides references to the evaluation of aquatic ecological management of the Taiyangshan Wetland.

Harmful cyanobacterial bloom (HCB) is problematic for drinking water treatment, and some of its strains can produce toxins that significantly affect human health. To better control eutrophication and HCB, catchment managers need to continuously keep track of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the water bodies. However, the high-frequency monitoring of these water quality indicators is not economical. In these cases, machine learning techniques may serve as viable alternatives since they can learn directly from the available surrogate data. In the present work, a random forest, extremely randomized trees (ET), extreme gradient boosting, k-nearest neighbors, a light gradient boosting machine, and bagging regressor-based virtual sensors were used to predict N and P in two catchments with contrasting land uses. The effect of data scaling and missing value imputation were also assessed, while the Shapley additive explanations were used to rank feature importance. A specification book, sensitivity analysis, and best practices for developing virtual sensors are discussed. Results show that ET, MinMax scaler, and a multivariate imputer were the best predictive model, scaler, and imputer, respectively. Soil phosphorus accumulation resulting in a high risk of phosphorus pollution is due to high multiple vegetable cropping indexes and excessive fertilizer input in protected fields. Therefore, this study explored the bioavailability of soil-accumulated phosphorus to improve fertilization and reduce the risk of soil phosphorus contamination in protected fields. A field trial was performed in Yanbian Prefecture, China to study the phosphorus bioavailability after continuous spinach planting without phosphate fertilizer applications. Results indicated that with increasing numbers of planting stubbles, soil inorganic phosphorus and occluded phosphorus changed little, while water-soluble and loose phosphorus, aluminum-phosphate, iron-phosphate, and calcium-phosphorus decreased first and then increased. Soil available phosphorus declined linearly. For planting spinach in protected fields, the threshold of soil phosphorus deficiency is 200 mg kg -1 . A soil phosphorus supply potential model was established between x (the soil available phosphorus) and y (the numbers of planting stubbles): y = 6.759 + 0.027 x , R = 0.99, which can be used to predict how planting stubbles are needed to raise the soil available phosphorus above the critical value of phosphorus deficiency for spinach. These results will provide the theoretical guidance for rational phosphorus fertilizer applications and control agricultural, non-point pollution sources in protected fields.

Soil microbial biomass (SMB) and soil microbial communities (SMCs) are the key factors in soil health and agricultural sustainability. We hypothesized that low bioavailable carbon (C) and energy were the key limiting factors influencing soil microbial growth and developed a new fertilization system to address this: the simultaneous application of mineral fertilizers and high-energy-density organic amendments (HED-OAs). A microcosm soil incubation experiment and a Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis pot culture experiment were used to test the effects of this new system. Compared to mineral fertilizer application alone, the simultaneous input of fertilizers and vegetable oil (SIFVO) achieved a bacterial abundance, fungal abundance, and fungal:bacterial ratio that were two orders of magnitude higher, significantly higher organic C and nitrogen (N) content, significantly lower N loss, and nearly net-zero N 2 O emissions. We proposed an energy and nutrient threshold theory to explain the observed bacterial and fungal growth characteristics, challenging the previously established C:N ratio determination theory. Furthermore, SIFVO led to microbial community improvements (an increased fungal:bacterial ratio, enriched rhizosphere bacteria and fungi, and reduced N-transformation bacteria) that were beneficial for agricultural sustainability. A low vegetable oil rate (5 g/kg) significantly promoted Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis growth and decreased the shoot N content by 35%, while a high rate caused severe N deficiency and significantly inhibited growth of the crop, confirming the exceptionally high microbial abundance and indicating severe microbe-crop competition for nutrients in the soil.

Lakes are considered sentinels of terrestrial environmental change. Nevertheless, our understanding of the impact of catchment anthropogenic activities on nutrients and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO 2 , an important parameter in evaluating CO 2 levels in water) is still restrained by the scarcity of long-term observations. In this study, spatiotemporal variations in nutrient concentrations (total nitrogen: TN, total phosphorus: TP, nitrate: NO 3 - -N, and ammonium: NH 4 + -N) pCO 2 in Taihu Lake were analyzed from 1992 to 2006, along with the gross domestic product (GDP) and wastewater discharge (WD) of its catchment. The study area was divided into three zones to characterize spatial heterogeneity in water quality: the inflow river mouth zone (Liangxi River and Zhihugang River), transition zone (Meiliang Bay), and central Taihu Lake, respectively. It is abundantly obvious that external nutrient inputs from the catchment have a notable impact on the water parameters in Taihu Lake, because nutrient concentrations and pCO 2 were substantially higher in the inflow river mouth zone than in the open water of Meiliang Bay and central Taihu Lake. The GDP and WD of Taihu Lake's catchment were significantly and positively correlated with the temporal variation in nutrient concentrations and pCO 2 , indicating that catchment development activities had an impact on Taihu Lake's water quality. In addition, pCO 2 was negatively correlated with chlorophyll a and the saturation of dissolved oxygen, but positively correlated with nutrient concentrations (e.g., TN, TP, and NH 4 + -N) in inflow river mouth zone of Taihu Lake. The findings of this study reveal that the anthropogenic activities of the catchment not only affect the water quality of Taihu Lake but also the CO 2 concentrations. The impact of rainfall on water quality may be more important in semi-arid regions, where rainfall is concentrated over a couple of months. To explore the impact of rainfall changes on water quality, e.g., nitrogen (TN) and phosphorous (TP), the diversion from Luan River to Tianjin Watershed in the northern semi-humid area was selected as the study area. TN and TP concentrations in rivers and the Yuqiao Reservoir during the three-year high-flow season (2019-2021) were analyzed. The response relationship and influencing factors among the watershed's biogeochemical process, rainfall, and water quality were clarified. The results showed that rainfall in the high flow season mainly controlled the river flow. The concentration of TN and TP in the inflow rivers is regulated by rainfall/flow, while the concentration of TN and TP in the water diversion river has different variation characteristics in the water diversion period and other periods. The lowest annual concentrations of TN and TP were observed in the normal year, while the highest annual concentration was observed in the wet year, indicating that the hydrological process drove the nutrient transport in the watershed. For the tributaries, the Li River catchment contributed a large amount of N and P to the aquatic environment. For the reservoir, the extreme TN concentrations were the same as the tributaries, while the extremes of TP concentrations decreased from the dry year to wet year, which was in contrast to the tributaries. The spatial variation of TN and TP concentrations in the reservoir showed that the concentration decreased following the flow direction from the river estuary to the reservoir outlet. Considering climate change, with the increase of rainfall in North China in the future, the TN and TP transport fluxes in the watershed may continue to increase, leading to the nitrogen and phosphorus load of the downstream reservoir. To ensure the impact of the increase of potential N and P output fluxes in the watershed on the water quality of the reservoir area, it is necessary to strengthen the effective prevention and control of non-point source pollution in the watershed.

Floodgate operation is one of the main forms of river regulation in the development and utilization of river basins. It changes the natural structure, flow process, and correlative environment of rivers. However, there is little analysis of the multiple impacts of small floodgate operation on the water environment in river networks and of the regulation patterns of urban floodgate infrastructure on pollution. In this paper, a one-dimensional hydrodynamic-water quality model, MIKE 11, was used, taking Wuxi's two main pollutant indicators-the permanganate index (COD Mn ) and ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N)-to simulate the water quality response of Wuxi's river network based on different design solutions of urban floodgate infrastructure. The results show that among the three design scenarios, the order of the decreasing amplitude of the COD Mn and NH 3 -N concentrations was as follows: 1.4 m design solution scenario > 2.1 m design solution scenario > 0.7 m design solution scenario. Meanwhile, under the 1.4 m scenario, the maximum decrease in the COD Mn concentration reached 37.57%, and the maximum decrease in the NH 3 -N concentration reached 206%. In the entire river network system, the improvement in the water quality in the downstream area was significantly better than that in the upstream area. In addition, under the three scenarios of floodgate operation, the changes in pollutant concentrations during the flood season (June-September) were significantly lower than those during the dry season (October-February) and the flat water season (March-May). The research results can provide theoretical support and new ideas for future research on the ecological operation of small floodgates and related research on the water environment effect.

Waste from crustaceans has adverse effects on the environment. In this respect, shrimp waste was valorized for producing chitosan nanoparticles as a source for eco-friendly nano-nitrogen fertilizer. The application of nano-nitrogen fertilizers is a valuable alternative approach in agriculture due to its potential for reducing the application of mineral nitrogen fertilizers and increasing yield quality and quantity, thereby helping to reduce the worldwide food shortage. Chitosan nanoparticles were foliar sprayed at three volumes (0, 7, and 14 L/ha) and compared with mineral nitrogen fertilizer (M-N) sprayed at three volumes (0, 120, and 240 kg N/ha) and their combination on two wheat cultivars (Misr-1 and Gemaiza-11) during two consecutive seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021) in order to evaluate the agronomic response. The synthesized chitosan nanoparticles displayed characteristic bands of both Nan-N and urea/chitosan from 500-4000 cm -1 . They are stable and have a huge surface area of 73.21 m 2 g -1 . The results revealed significant differences among wheat cultivars, fertilization applications, individual or combined, and their interactions for yield-contributing traits. Foliar application of nano-nitrogen fertilizer at 14 L/ha combined with mineral fertilizer at 240 kg/ha significantly increased total chlorophyll content by 41 and 31% compared to control; concerning plant height, the two cultivars recorded the tallest plants (86.2 and 86.5 cm) compared to control. On the other hand, the heaviest 1000-grain weight (55.8 and 57.4 g) was recorded with treatment of 120 kg Mn-N and 14 L Nan-N/ha compared to the control (47.6 and 45.5 g). The Misr-1 cultivar achieved the highest values for grain yield and nitrogen (1.30 and 1.91 mg/L) and potassium (9.87 and 9.81 mg/L) in the two studied seasons when foliarly sprayed with the combination of 120 kg Mn-N/ha + 14 L Nan-N/ha compared to the Gemaiza-11 cultivar. It can be concluded that Misr-1 exhibited higher levels of total chlorophyll content, spike length, 100-grain weight, grain yield in kg/ha, and nitrogen and potassium. However, Gemaiza-11 displayed higher biomass and straw yield values, plant height, and sodium concentration values. It could be economically recommended to use the application of 120 kg Mn-N/ha + 14 L Nan-N/ha on the Misr-1 cultivar to achieve the highest crop yield.

Efficient and sustainable technologies for cleaning of contaminated water and sediments are in urgent demand. In this study, a new type of sediment microbial fuel cell coupled floating bed (FB-SMFC) was developed to repair eutrophic water and sediment in a cleaner way. The effect of electrode spacing on the power generation capacity and the synchronous remediation of pollutants from eutrophic water and sediment were studied. When the electrode distance was 60 cm, the maximum power generation and pollutant removal effects were obtained. At the end of the experiment, the maximum output voltage was 0.4 V, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD Cr , potassium dichromate method), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) contents in the overlying water were 8 mg/L, 0.7 mg/L, and 0.39 mg/L. The corresponding removal rates were 88.2%, 78.8%, and 59.0%, respectively. The removal rates of organic matter and TN in the sediment were 12.8% and 86.4%, respectively, and the fixation rate of TP was 29.2%. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum of bacteria in the sediment and anode. Many anaerobic bacteria were found in the overlying water, which facilitated denitrification. Overall, the results of this research revealed a highly efficient and reliable strategy for eutrophic water and sediment remediation, aquatic ecosystems restoration, and human health protection.

To make full use of urban household balcony space, an urban aquaponics system for balconies was constructed to investigate the purification effects of four different substrates (volcanic stone, ceramic pellets, ceramic rings, and nanorods) and six plants (mung bean sprouts, hollow cabbage, water celery, lettuce, leek, and water chestnut) on fish culture wastewater. Through the determination of contaminants such as nitrogen and phosphorus and through the use of 16SrDNA sequencing technology, the substrate material and plant combinations with the best purification effects were screened. The results show that volcanic stone and nanorods have strong purification capacities. Compared to the other substrate types, there were more unique bacterial species on the surface of volcanic stone, among which amoeba species were the most dominant (92.42%). Among the six tested plant species, mung bean sprouts had the highest contribution to nitrogen uptake (94.96%), and water chestnut had the highest contribution to phosphorus uptake at 12.07%. Finally, the combination of nanorods and water celery was the best at purifying the wastewater. This study provides a theoretical basis and new ideas for the construction of urban aquaponics systems on balconies, which will help to achieve green farming and the efficient utilization of water resources.

This study was performed to determine the ecological health of a temperate river over nine years (2011−2019); it also analyzed the trophic structure and linkage of nutrients (nitrogen [N] and phosphorus [P]), sestonic chlorophyll-a (CHL-a), and the top trophic fish in the Asian monsoon region. Water chemistry, trophic indicators, and tolerance guilds were primarily influenced by land use and land cover (LULC); the magnitude of variation was also related to geographic elevation, artificial physical barriers (weirs), and point sources. Levels of nutrients, organic matter, and CHL-a largely influenced by the intensity of the monsoon seasonality for a particular LULC and stream order. Mann−Kendall tests based on a long-term annual dataset showed that annual organic matter and CHL-a increased over time because of longer hydraulic residence time after weir construction. The results of empirical nutrient models suggested that P was the key determinant for algal growth (CHL-a); the strong P-limitation was supported by N:P ratios > 17 in ambient waters. Linear regression models and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to determine the influences of LULC and water quality on the trophic/tolerance linkages, fish community compositions and structures, and river health. Tolerant species had a positive functional relationship with nutrient enrichment through total phosphorus (TP) (R2 = 0.55, p < 0.05) and total nitrogen (TN) (R2 = 0.57, p < 0.05), organic pollution in terms of biological oxygen demand (BOD) (R2 = 0.41, p < 0.05) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (R2 = 0.49, p < 0.05), and algal growth (R2 = 0.47, p < 0.05); sensitive species exhibited the opposite pattern. The degradation of river health, based on the multi-metric index of biotic integrity (IBI) model, was evident in the downriver region (“fair−poor” condition) and was supported by the quantitative fish community index (QFCI) model. The outcomes suggested that the degradation and variation of ecological river health, trophic linkages of water chemistry (N, P)-algal biomass-fish, were largely controlled by the land use pattern and construction of physical barriers in relation to the Asian monsoon.

To explore the correlations between nutrients and stoichiometric characteristics in the rhizosphere and bulk soils of understory Smilax china L. in forest ecosystems at different altitudes and to clarify the rhizosphere effect of understory vegetation in forest ecosystems and its response strategy to altitude, providing a theoretical basis for better forest ecological environment protection and high-quality development in Fanjing Mountain. Understory Smilax china L. at four different altitudes were selected, with the differences and influencing factors of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) mass fractions and stoichiometric ratios in their rhizosphere and bulk soils analyzed. The average mass fractions of total C, total N and alkali-hydrolyzed N in the rhizosphere and bulk soils of Smilax china L. at different altitudes were 224.43 and 181.55 g·kg -1 ; 9.56 and 6.81 g·kg -1 ; and 648.19 and 600.70 g·kg -1 , respectively. The rhizosphere effect of Smilax china L. was significant at altitudes of 500 m and 1000 m but became not so prominent with the rise of altitude. The C:N ratio in the rhizosphere and bulk soils ranged from 19.51 to 39.75 and the C:P ratio ranged from 225.29 to 543.05. C accumulation is greater than N accumulation in the rhizosphere and bulk soils of Smilax china L., and both present P limitation. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the mass fractions and eco-stoichiometric ratios of soil nutrients, the P limitation in Fanjing Mountain forest ecosystem is commonly seen and should be addressed.

The application of iron powder stimulated the growth of iron-reducing bacteria as a respiratory substrate and enhanced their nitrogen (N)-fixing activity in flooded paddy soils. High N fertilization (urea) in the flooded paddy soils has caused adverse environmental impacts such as ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization, nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions, and nitrate (NO 3 - ) leaching. This study aims to investigate the effects of N fertilization rates in combination with an iron amendment on rice yields and N losses from flooded paddy fields. We performed a 2-year field plot experiment with traditional rice-wheat rotation in China's Yangtze River Delta. The investigation consisted of seven treatments, including 100%, 80%, 60%, and 0% of the conventional N (urea and commercial organic manure) fertilization rate, and 80%, 60%, and 0% of the conventional N with the iron powder (≥99% purity) amendment. The rice yields decreased with a reduction in the conventional N fertilization rate, whereas they were comparable after the iron application under the 80% and 60% conventional N rate. The critical N losses, including NH 3 volatilization, N 2 O emissions, and NO 3 - and NH 4 + leaching, generally decreased with a reduction in the conventional N fertilization rate. These N losses were significantly greater after the iron amendment compared with the non-amended treatments under the 80% and 60% conventional N fertilization rate in the first rice-growing season. However, it was comparable between the iron-amended and the non-amended treatments in the second season. Furthermore, NO 3 - leaching was the most significant N loss throughout the two rice seasons, followed by NH 3 volatilization. The iron amendment significantly increased soil Fe 2+ content compared with the non-amended treatments irrespective of N fertilization, suggesting the reduction of amended iron by iron-reducing bacteria and their simultaneous N fixation. A combination of the iron application with 60-80% of the conventional N fertilization rate could maintain rice yields similar to the conventional N fertilization rate while reducing the critical N losses in the flooded paddy field tested in this study. Our study leads to the establishment of novel and practical rice cultivation, which is a step towards the development of green agriculture.
