This study aims at the evaluation of different formulations of concrete made with calcined clays and limestone (LC3 cement) exposed to aggressive environments. The study includes the evaluation of fresh and hardened properties and a comprehensive evaluation of durability over 24 months. The inclusion of calcined clays in cement increases the specific surface area of the cements, and thus the water demand. However, the high reactivity of calcined clays compared to any other pozzolan, and the synergy that occurs with limestones, enables the use of cements with very low clinker content that achieve strengths similar to those of Portland. Comparisons of LC3 formulations with Portland cement and with concrete containing silica fume prove the superiority of calcined clays in terms of strength and durability. The best results are obtained with LC3-50 cement with 50% clinker produced through co-grinding. Results of concrete made with a blend of 70% Portland cement with 30% LC2 (60% calcined clay, 35% limestone, 5% gypsum, separate ground) are also promising. The good insulation properties and the low carbon footprint of vegetal concretes make them promising materials whose use tends to grow continuously. To produce optimized building materials, a better understanding of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between vegetal particles and cement paste in terms of the reactions involved and the size of the impacted surface was investigated. This research led to the setting of a reliable visual test to observe ITZ, which enables the monitoring of its appearance and development. Different combinations of vegetal particles and cement pastes were tested to compare the formed ITZ: hemp, rapeseed, and bamboo into Portland and Prompt cement. Finally, a clear link was drawn between the sugar concentration and the size of ITZ. Thanks to image analysis, it was shown that ITZ is due to physico-chemical reactions, with the extraction of free saccharide molecules from the vegetal and water suction followed by their release into the cement paste. This article presents recent research on cements containing GGBFS and their modifications with accelerating admixtures. The initial setting time and hydration heat evolution results are presented for cement CEM II/B-S and CEM III/A manufactured with three Portland clinkers of various phase compositions. The research was carried out at 8 °C and 20 °C. The main objective is to assess the behavior of blended cements in cooperation with modern admixtures that contain nucleation seeds. The authors aimed to compare and evaluate different methods to reduce setting time, namely, the effects of temperature, the specific surface area of cement and GGBFS, the type of Portland clinker, the content of GGBFS, and presence of accelerators. Many of these aspects appear in separate studies, and the authors wanted a more comprehensive coverage of the subject. Those methods of reducing the setting time can be ranked: the most effective is to increase the temperature of the ingredients and the surroundings, the second is to reduce the GGBFS content in cement, and the use of accelerators, and the least effective is the additional milling of Portland clinker. However, of these methods, only the use of accelerators is acceptable in terms of sustainability. To develop a design method for concrete using low-quality recycled aggregates, an experimental study was conducted on applicability to examine the structural strength correction value (S value) and calculation of mix proportion strength of recycled aggregate concrete-Class M, which used recycled aggregate class L mixing with the normal aggregate. Cement used in the experiment was ordinary Portland cement (in this case, fly ash type II was used as a fine aggregate substitute), Portland blast-furnace slag cement type B, and low-heat Portland cement. As a result, the mix proportion strength of recycled aggregate concrete-Class M could be determined using the S value according to JASS 5 (2018) as normal-weight concrete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The method of assessment of the "skin effect" for chloride ingress into concrete has been proposed, based on the inverse problem for the identification of at-surface variability of chloride diffusivity under fully saturated conditions. For this purpose, experimental results of 180-day diffusion tests of five types of concrete were used, which allowed the calculation of their chloride apparent diffusivity (taking into account the chloride binding by the cement matrix) and effective diffusivity (relating to the transport of free chloride ions in the pore liquid). The tested concrete samples with a water to cement ratio of 0.5 differed only in the type of cement (high early strength Portland, low-alkali normal early strength Portland, ash Portland, blast furnace, and pozzolanic). In order to effectively describe the chloride binding isotherm, a first-degree non-uniform spline function was used. Finally, the "skin effect" depth at the untreated outer surface of the concrete samples was estimated up to about 5 mm when analyzing space variability of apparent chloride diffusivity for four types of concrete with low-alkali normal early strength Portland, ash Portland, blast furnace, and pozzolanic cement. This article presents the results of research that dealt with the development of non-traditional concrete using a hybrid alkali-activated cement. It is concrete based on by-products from a metallurgical plant that replaced 100% of the natural aggregates. Steel slag (CSS, fraction: 0/8 mm) was used as a filler in combination with air-cooled slag (ACBFS, fraction: 8/16 mm and 16/32 mm). Portland blended cement (CEM II/B-S 42.5N) and H-CEMENT were used as binding components in the development of the concrete mixture designs. Both of these cements were produced by Považská cementáreň, a.s., Ladce. Attention was focused on testing the physical and mechanical properties of the developed concretes in various environments. An aqueous environment was selected as the first environment for the placement of test specimens (cubes with 150 mm edges and prisms with dimensions of 100 × 100 × 400 mm3) according to the ČSN EN 206-1 standard and the outdoor environment (August to October). The determination of the cube strength was made after 7, 28, and 90 days, the determination of the flexural and compressive strength was made at the end of the prisms, and the determination of the dynamic modulus of elasticity was made after 28 days on the prisms. The test results of the test specimens, which were placed in two environments, were compared and it was found that, after 90 days, the outdoor environment caused a decrease in the concrete's strength characteristics when using Portland blended cement (CEM II/ B-S 42.5N) of about 8%; in contrast, when using H-CEMENT, the concrete's strength increased by about 14%. The use of H-CEMENT and the addition of PUZZOLANIT in the amount of 30% in combination with CEM II/B-S 42.5N in the amount of 70% reduced the decrease in the strength of the concrete after 90 days by about 3%. The research results confirm the suitability of using H-CEMENT and the addition of PUZZOLANIT for the production of concrete based on steel slag (CSS) and air-cooled slag (ACBFS). Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is a valuable commodity originating during processes of road/highways rehabilitations, resurfacing in the cases of the revelation of underneath-placed layers. Removed material can be successfully recycled and utilized as a supplementing material for new hot asphalt mixes. However, its dosages are limited because of variations in properties of aged bitumen compared to fresh material and, thus, a significant amount of waste material is remaining as waste products. Nonetheless, this commodity may find usage in the construction industry that suffers from a shortage of high-quality and easily available aggregates. This work aimed to investigate the optimal substitution of mined natural aggregate with commonly available RAP in order to produce composites with the comparable mechanical performance of reference ordinary Portland concrete. The aggregate substitutions up to 100% with RAP have been studied with a combination of mechanical and analytical techniques. Obtained experimental data showed changes in the porous structure, mineralogy, and in the amount of formed cement-related hydration products that influenced the mechanical performance of produced composites. Composite with 10% of natural aggregate substitution with RAP has shown the strength class C16/20 after 28 days of water curing, according to the EN 206-1. The broader use of cements with a higher content of the main non-clinker components in construction industry is one of the directions leading to the decarbonization in cement production. This contribution analyzes the properties of low-emission cements containing from 44% to 56% of Portland clinker in their composition and indicates the possibilities of wider use in the construction. The obtained results confirmed that following the appropriate technological regimes, low-emission cements can be implemented into the production of concrete exposed to carbonation-induced corrosion (exposure class XC4 according to EN 206), frost-resistant concrete (exposure class XF4 according to EN 206), self-compacting concrete (SCC) and high-performance concrete (HPC). The paper presents the composition and properties of low-emission ternary cements: Portland multicomponent cement CEM II/C-M and multicomponent cement CEM VI. In the ternary cements, Portland clinker was replaced at the levels of 40% and 55% with a mixture of the main components such as limestone (LL), granulated blast furnace slag (S) and siliceous fly ash (V). Portland multicomponent cements CEM II/C-M and CEM VI are low-emission binders with CO2 emissions ranging from 340 (CEM VI) kg to 453 (CEM II/C-M) kg per Mg of cement. The results obtained indicate the possibility of a wider use of ground limestone (LL) in cement composition. This is important in the case of limited market availability of fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag. The tests conducted on concrete have shown that the necessary condition for obtaining a high strength class and durability of concrete from CEM II/C-M and CEM VI ternary cements is low water–cement ratio. Durability characteristics of concrete (carbonation susceptibility, chloride ion permeation, frost resistance) made of CEM II/C-M and CEM VI cements were determined after 90 days of hardening. This work aims to study the effect of Ca(C18H35O2)2 (calcium stearate) on the properties of concrete by using Portland composite cement (PCC) and fly ash as binders. The calcium stearate content used in the concrete here consists of 0, 1, 5, and 10 kg per m3 of concrete volume, or alternatively, 0 to 2.85% by the weight of cement. We have performed several tests for each of the contents, namely, compressive strength, water absorption, chloride ion infiltration, and accelerated corrosion tests. According to the testing, we have found that with the addition of calcium stearate at 1 kg/m3 in self-compacting concrete (SCC) with 10% fly ash, the mechanical and physical properties of SCC can be improved significantly when compared to the SCC without fly ash and calcium stearate, resulting in a stable compressive strength, lower water absorption, lower chloride ion infiltration, and lower degree of corrosion attack.
