The current deformation and stable state of slopes with historical shatter signs is a concern for engineering construction. Suspected landslide scarps were discovered at the rear edge of the Genie slope on the Tibetan Plateau during a field investigation. To qualitatively determine the current status of the surface deformation of this slope, this study used high-resolution optical remote sensing, airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technologies for comprehensive analysis. The interpretation of high-resolution optical and airborne LiDAR data revealed that the rear edge of the slope exhibits three levels of scarps. However, no deformation was detected with differential InSAR (D-InSAR) analysis of ALOS-1 radar images from 2007 to 2008 or with Stacking-InSAR and small baseline subset InSAR (SBAS-InSAR) processing of Sentinel-1A radar images from 2017 to 2020. This study verified the credibility of the InSAR results using the standard deviation of the phase residuals, as well as in-borehole displacement monitoring data. A conceptual model of the slope was developed by combining field investigation, borehole coring, and horizontal exploratory tunnel data, and the results indicated that the slope is composed of steep anti-dip layered dolomite limestone and that the scarps at the trailing edges of the slope were caused by historical shallow toppling. Unlike previous remote sensing studies of deformed landslides, this paper argues that remote sensing results with reliable accuracy are also applicable to the study of undeformed slopes and can help make preliminary judgments about the stability of unexplored slopes. In the low-lying, river-rich Pearl River Delta in South China, an extensive network of flood defense levees, spanning over 4400 km, plays a crucial role in urban flood management. These levees are designed to withstand floods and storm surges, yet their failure can lead to significant human and economic losses, highlighting the need for robust urban flood defense strategies. This necessitates the development of a sophisticated geographic information system for the levee network and rapid, accurate assessment methods for levee conditions to support water management and flood mitigation efforts. This study focuses on the levees along the Hengmen waterway in the Pearl River Delta, utilizing airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology to gather 3D spatial data of the levees. Employing the Cloth Simulation Filter (CSF) algorithm, non-ground point cloud data were extracted. The study improved upon the region-growing algorithm, using a seed point set approach for the automatic extraction of levee point cloud data. The accuracy and completeness of levee extraction were evaluated using the quality index. This method achieved effective extraction of four levee types, showing significant improvements over traditional algorithms, with extraction quality ranging from 72% to 83%. Key research outcomes include the development of a novel method for detecting localized levee depressions based on the computation of the variance of angles between normal vectors in single-phase levee point cloud data. An adaptive optimal neighborhood approach was utilized to accurately determine the normal vectors, effectively representing the local morphology of the levee point clouds. Applied in three levee depression detection experiments, this method proved effective, demonstrating the capability of single-phase data in identifying regions of levee depression deformation. This advancement in levee monitoring technology marks a significant step forward in enhancing urban flood defense capabilities in regions such as the cities of the Pearl River Delta in China. The infestation of pine shoot beetles (Tomicus spp.) in the forests of Southwestern China has inflicted serious ecological damages to the environment, causing significant economic losses. Therefore, accurate and practical approaches to detect pest infestation have become an urgent necessity to mitigate these harmful consequences. In this study, we explored the efficiency of thermal infrared (TIR) technology in capturing changes in canopy surface temperature (CST) and monitoring forest health at the scale of individual tree crowns. We combined data collected from TIR imagery and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) using unmanned airborne vehicles (UAVs) to estimate the shoot damage ratio (SDR), which is a representative parameter of the damage degree caused by forest infestation. We compared multiple machine learning methods for data analysis, including random forest (RF), partial least squares regression (PLSR), and support vector machine (SVM), to determine the optimal regression model for assessing SDR at the crown scale. Our findings showed that a combination of LiDAR metrics and CST presents the highest accuracy in estimating SDR using the RF model (R2 = 0.7914, RMSE = 15.5685). Our method enables the accurate remote monitoring of forest health and is expected to provide a novel approach for controlling pest infestation, minimizing the associated damages caused. Accurately estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for assessing carbon storage in forest ecosystems. However, traditional field survey methods are time-consuming, and vegetation indices based on optical remote sensing are prone to saturation effects, potentially underestimating AGB in subtropical forests. To overcome these limitations, we propose an improved approach that combines three-dimensional (3D) forest structure data collected using unmanned aerial vehicle light detection and ranging (UAV LiDAR) technology with ground measurements to apply a binary allometric growth equation for estimating and mapping the spatial distribution of AGB in subtropical forests of China. Additionally, we analyze the influence of terrain factors such as elevation and slope on the distribution of forest biomass. Our results demonstrate a high accuracy in estimating tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH) using LiDAR data, with an R2 of 0.89 for tree height and 0.92 for DBH. In the study area, AGB ranges from 0.22 to 755.19 t/ha, with an average of 121.28 t/ha. High AGB values are mainly distributed in the western and central-southern parts of the study area, while low AGB values are concentrated in the northern and northeastern regions. Furthermore, we observe that AGB in the study area exhibits an increasing trend with altitude, reaching its peak at approximately 1650 m, followed by a gradual decline with further increase in altitude. Forest AGB gradually increases with slope, reaching its peak near 30°. However, AGB decreases within the 30–80° range as the slope increases. This study confirms the effectiveness of using UAV LiDAR for estimating and mapping the spatial distribution of AGB in complex terrains. Research on the inversion of forest aboveground biomass based on airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data focuses on finding the relationship between the two, such as established linear or nonlinear models. However, these models may have poorer estimation accuracy for tree-components biomass and cannot guarantee the additivity of each component. Therefore, we aimed to develop an error-in-variable biomass model system that ensures both the compatibility of the individual tree component biomass with the diameter at breast height and the additivity of component biomass. The system we developed used the airborne LiDAR data and field-measured data of principis-rupprechtii (Larix gmelinii var.) trees, collected from north China. Our model system not only ensured the additivity of nonlinear biomass models, it also accounted for the impact of measurement errors. We first selected the airborne LiDAR-derived variable with the highest contribution to the biomass of each component and then developed an inversion model system with that variable as an independent variable and with the biomass of each component as the dependent variable using allometric functions. Moreover, two model estimation methods, two-stage error (TSEM) and nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (NSUR) with one-step, two-step, and summation methods, were also applied, and their performances were compared. The results showed that both NSUR-one-step and TSEM-one-step led to similar parameter estimates and performance for a system, and the fitting accuracy of a model system was not very attractive. The variance function included in a model system reduced the heteroscedasticity effectively and improved the model accuracy. Overall, this study successfully combined the error-in-variable modeling with the airborne LiDAR data, proposed methods that can be used for the extension of component biomass from an individual tree to a stand and that might improve the estimation accuracy of carbon storage. The prediction of crop yield plays a crucial role in national economic development, encompassing grain storage, processing, and grain price trends. Employing multiple sensors to acquire remote sensing data and utilizing machine learning algorithms can enable accurate, fast, and nondestructive yield prediction for maize crops. However, current research heavily relies on single-type remote sensing data and traditional machine learning methods, resulting in the limited robustness of yield prediction models. To address these limitations, this study introduces a field-scale maize yield prediction model named the convolutional neural network–attention–long short-term memory network (CNN-attention-LSTM) model, which utilizes multimodal remote sensing data collected by multispectral and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensors mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The model incorporates meteorological data throughout the crop reproductive stages and employs the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference red edge (NDRE), soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) for the initial part of the vegetative stage (initial part of the V period), the later part of the vegetative stage (later part of the V period), the reproductive stage (R period), and the maturity stage (M period), along with LIDAR data for Point75–100 in the later part of the V period, Point80–100 in the R period, and Point50–100 in the M period, complemented by corresponding meteorological data as inputs. The resulting yield estimation demonstrates exceptional performance, with an R2 value of 0.78 and an rRMSE of 8.27%. These results surpass previous research and validate the effectiveness of multimodal data in enhancing yield prediction models. Furthermore, to assess the superiority of the proposed model, four machine learning algorithms—multiple linear regression (MLR), random forest regression (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and backpropagation (BP)—are compared to the CNN-attention-LSTM model through experimental analysis. The outcomes indicate that all alternative models exhibit inferior prediction accuracy compared to the CNN-attention-LSTM model. Across the test dataset within the study area, the R2 values for various nitrogen fertilizer levels consistently exceed 0.75, illustrating the robustness of the proposed model. Continuous and extensive monitoring of forest height is essential for estimating forest above-ground biomass and predicting the ability of forests to absorb CO2. In particular, forest height at the national scale is an important indicator reflecting the national forestry economic construction, environmental governance, and ecological balance. However, the lack of inventory data restricts large-scale monitoring of forest height to some extent. Conducting manual surveys of forest height for large-scale areas would be labor-intensive and time-consuming. The successful launch of the new generation of spaceborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) (The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2/the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System, ICESat-2/ATLAS) has brought new opportunities for national-scale forestry resource surveys. This paper explores a method to survey national forest canopy height from the new generation of ICESat-2/ATLAS data. In view of the sparse sampling and little overlap between repeated spaceborne LiDAR data, a strategy for assessing the overall change of canopy height for large scales is provided. Some spatially continuous ancillary data were used to assist ICESat-2/ATLAS data to generate a wall-to-wall (spatially continuous) forest canopy height map in China by using the machine learning approach and then quantifying the analysis of forest canopy height in various provinces. The results show that there is a good correlation between the model forest height and the verification data, with a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 3.30 m and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.87. This indicates that the method for retrieving national forest canopy height is reliable. There are some limitations in areas with lower vegetation coverage or complex topography which need additional filtering or terrain correction to achieve higher accuracy in measuring forest canopy height. Our analysis suggests that ICESat-2/ATLAS data can achieve the retrieval of national forest height at an overall level, and it would be feasible to use ICESAT-2/ATLAS products to estimate forest canopy height change for large-scale areas. The technology of remote sensing-assisted tree species classification is increasingly developing, but the rapid refinement of tree species classification on a large scale is still challenging. As one of the treasures of ecological resources in China, Arxan has 80% forest cover, and tree species classification surveys guarantee ecological environment management and sustainable development. In this study, we identified tree species in three samples within the Arxan Duraer Forestry Zone based on the spectral, textural, and topographic features of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral remote sensing imagery and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point cloud data as classification variables to distinguish among birch, larch, and nonforest areas. The best extracted classification variables were combined to compare the accuracy of the random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and classification and regression tree (CART) methodologies for classifying species into three sample strips in the Arxan Duraer Forestry Zone. Furthermore, the effect on the overall classification results of adding a canopy height model (CHM) was investigated based on spectral and texture feature classification combined with field measurement data to improve the accuracy. The results showed that the overall accuracy of the RF was 79%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.63. After adding the CHM extracted from the point cloud data, the overall accuracy was improved by 7%, and the kappa coefficient increased to 0.75. The overall accuracy of the CART model was 78%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.63; the overall accuracy of the SVM was 81%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.67; and the overall accuracy of the RF was 86%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.75. To verify whether the above results can be applied to a large area, Google Earth Engine was used to write code to extract the features required for classification from Sentinel-2 multispectral and radar topographic data (create equivalent conditions), and six tree species and one nonforest in the study area were classified using RF, with an overall accuracy of 0.98, and a kappa coefficient of 0.97. In this paper, we mainly integrate active and passive remote sensing data for forest surveying and add vertical data to a two-dimensional image to form a three-dimensional scene. The main goal of the research is not only to find schemes to improve the accuracy of tree species classification, but also to apply the results to large-scale areas. Frequent landslides and other geological disasters pose a serious threat to human life and infrastructure in the Upper Yellow River. Detecting active landslides and ascertaining their impact necessitate the determination of deformation characteristics. In this study, we developed an integrated method combining interferometric synthetic aperture radar and high-resolution optical satellite remote sensing to detect active landslides in the Upper Yellow River region from Longyang Gorge to Lijia Gorge. Sentinel-1 satellite data from January 2019 to April 2021 with ascending and descending orbits were adopted to obtain deformation using the STACKING and interferometric point target analysis techniques. A 97.08% overlap rate in the detected results from the two InSAR technologies confirmed the suitability of both approaches. The missing detection rates (6.79% & 8.73%) from single line-of-sight (LOS) InSAR results indicate the necessity of different orbit direction data. Slight deformation rate changes (<4 mm/month) before and after rainy seasons of the Lijia Gorge landslide group indicate that precipitation exerted little impact on slope activity. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) can be used to analyze the geomorphic features in complex plateau mountains. Accordingly, a UAV–LiDAR system was adopted in this study to acquire images and lidar point-cloud dataset in the annular structure of Lufeng, Yunnan. A three-dimensional (3D) model was constructed based on structure from motion and multi-view stereo (SfM–MVS) in combination with a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM). Geomorphic identification, measurement, and analysis were conducted using integrated visual interpretation, DEM visualization, and geographic information system (GIS) topographic feature extraction. The results indicated that the 3D geomorphological visualization and mapping were based on DEM, which was employed to identify the dividing lines and ridges that were delineated of the pit rim structure. The high-resolution DEM retained more geomorphic detail information, and the topography and the variation between ridges were analyzed in depth. The catchment and ponding areas were analyzed using accurate morphological parameters through a multi-angle 3D visualization. The slope, aspect, and topographic wetness index (TWI) parameters were analyzed through mathematical statistics to qualitatively and accurately analyze the differences between different ridges. This study highlighted the significance of the UAV–LiDAR high-resolution topographic measurements and the SfM–MVS 3D scene modelling in accurately identifying geomorphological features and conducting refined analysis. An effective framework was established to acquire high-precision topographic datasets and to analyze geomorphological features in complex mountain areas, which was beneficial in deepening the research on numerical simulation analysis of geomorphological features and reveal the process evolution mechanism. Because wind power is connected to the grid on a large scale, frequency fluctuation in the power grid, which is defined as a system safety risk to the power grid, occurs from time to time. According to the grid code rules of China, wind turbines are required to be equipped with primary frequency modulation or inertia response control capability, which are used to support the safe and stable operation of the power grid. During the traditional frequency modulation process of the wind turbine, power limiting operation or pitch angle reservation is generally adopted to ensure that the reserved energy can be released at any time to support the frequency change in the power grid. However, the frequency support method leads to a large loss of power generation, and does not consider the coordination between mechanical load characteristics control and primary frequency modulation. In this paper, a mechanical load optimization control strategy for a wind turbine during the primary frequency modulation process, based on LIDAR (light detection and ranging) feed forward control technology, is proposed and verified. Through LIDAR feed forward control, the characteristics of incoming wind speed can be sensed in advance, with the consequence that the wind turbine can participate in, and actively control, the primary frequency modulation procedure. According to the characteristics of incoming wind, for instance the amplitude and turbulence, simultaneously, the size of the reserved pitch angle can be adjusted in real time. This kind of method, coordinating with the mechanical load of the wind turbine, can be used to reduce both the ultimate load and fatigue damage as much as possible. Finally, the mechanical load characteristics of the wind turbine with and without the control strategy are compared and studied through simulation. The research results show that the load optimization control strategy based on LIDAR feed-forward control technology can effectively reduce the fatigue and ultimate loads of the wind turbine while supporting the frequency change in the power grid; especially for the fatigue load of tower base tilt and roll bending moments, the reducing proportion will be about 4.3% and 6.3%, respectively. The accurate classification of tree species is essential for the sustainable management of forest resources and the effective monitoring of biodiversity. However, a literature review shows that most of the previous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based studies on fine tree species classification have used only limited intensity features, accurately identifying relatively few tree species. To address this gap, this study proposes developing a new intensity feature—intensity frequency—for the LiDAR-based fine classification of eight tree species. Intensity frequency is defined as the number of times a certain intensity value appears in the individual tree crown (ITC) point cloud. In this study, we use UAV laser scanning to obtain LiDAR data from urban forests. Intensity frequency features are constructed based on the extracted intensity information, and a random forest (RF) model is used to classify eight subtropical forest tree species in southeast China. Based on four-point cloud density sampling schemes of 100%, 80%, 50% and 30%, densities of 230 points/m2, 184 points/m2, 115 points/m2 and 69 points/m2 are obtained. These are used to analyze the effect of intensity frequency on tree species classification accuracy under four different point cloud densities. The results are shown as follows. (1) Intensity frequencies of trees are not significantly different for intraspecies (p > 0.05) values and are significantly different for interspecies (p < 0.01) values. (2) The intensity frequency features of LiDAR can be used to classify different tree species with an overall accuracy (OA) of 86.7%. Acer Buergerianum achieves a user accuracy (UA) of over 95% and a producer accuracy (PA) of over 90% for four density conditions. (3) The OA varies slightly under different point cloud densities, but the sum of correct classification trees (SCI) and PA decreases rapidly as the point cloud density decreases, while UA is less affected by density with some stability. (4) The priori feature selected by mean rank (MR) covers the top 10 posterior features selected by RF. These results show that the new intensity frequency feature proposed in this study can be used as a comprehensive and effective intensity feature for the fine classification of tree species. Forests are the largest terrestrial ecosystem carbon pool and provide the most important nature-based climate mitigation pathway. Compared with belowground biomass (BGB) and soil carbon, aboveground biomass (AGB) is more sensitive to human disturbance and climate change. Therefore, accurate forest AGB mapping will help us better assess the mitigation potential of forests against climate change. Here, we developed six models to estimate national forest AGB using six machine learning algorithms based on 52,415 spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) footprints and 22 environmental features for China in 2007. The results showed that the ensemble model generated by the stacking algorithm performed best with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.76 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 22.40 Mg/ha. The verifications at pixel level (R2 = 0.78, RMSE = 16.08 Mg/ha) and provincial level (R2 = 0.53, RMSE = 14.05 Mg/ha) indicated the accuracy of the estimated forest AGB map is satisfactory. The forest AGB density of China was estimated to be 53.16 ± 1.63 Mg/ha, with a total of 11.00 ± 0.34 Pg. Net primary productivity (NPP), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), average annual rainfall, and annual temperature anomaly are the five most important environmental factors for forest AGB estimation. Based on long-term lidar (light detection and ranging) observations at Yanqing (40.5°N, 116°E) and Pingquan (41°N, 118.7°E), cloud events occurred in the vicinity of the stratopause above Beijing were reported for the first time. These events occurred with tenuous and sparse layers within the altitude range of 33–65 km, and the maximum VBSC value ranged from 1 × 10 − 10 m − 1 sr − 1 to 5.5 × 10 − 9 m − 1 sr − 1 . Considering temperature and water vapor measurements from SABER/TIMED, the occurrence mechanism of these lidar-observed cloud events was examined. It was found that some cloud layers resulted from the nucleation of water vapor due to the local meteorological changes in the middle atmosphere, while other lidar-observed clouds could comprise floating clusters of cosmic dust, hydrate droplets, volcanic ash, space traffic exhaust, etc. These cloud events are rare cloud-like phenomena in the middle atmosphere observed by lidars at midlatitudes in China; they differ from NLCs and PSCs in terms of altitude distribution and seasonal variation, and the relevant microphysics processes behind their occurrence are likely meaningful to meteorology at midlatitudes. Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is recognized as the most important component of the greenhouse gases, the concentration of which has increased rapidly since the pre-industrial era due to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). The accurate monitoring of carbon dioxide is essential to study the global carbon cycle and radiation budget on Earth. The Aerosol and Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL) instrument onboard the Atmospheric Environmental Monitoring Satellite (AEMS) was successfully launched in April 2022, which allows a new perspective to quantify the global spatial distribution of atmospheric CO2 with high accuracy. In this work, the impact of the Doppler shift on CO2 measurements for an integrated-path differential absorption (IPDA) light detection and ranging (lidar) system was evaluated to meet the weighted column-averaged mixing ratio of carbon dioxide (XCO2) measurement requirements of less than one part per million (ppm). The measurement uncertainties due to the Doppler shift were first evaluated in airborne IPDA observations. The result shows that most of the Doppler shift is in the range of 6–8 MHz, resulting in 0.26-0.39 ppm deviations in the XCO2 results. The deviations between the XCO2 retrievals and in situ measurements decreased to 0.16 ppm after the correction of the Doppler shift from 11:28:29 to 11:28:49 in the flight campaign. In addition, the online Doppler shift accounts for 98% of the deviations between XCO2 retrievals and in situ measurements. Furthermore, the impact of the Doppler shift on ACDL measurements is also assessed. The differences between the XCO2 retrievals with and without Doppler shift are used to quantify measurement uncertainties due to the Doppler effect. The simulations reveal that a pointing misalignment of 0.067 mrad can lead to a mean bias of about 0.30 ppm (0.072%) in the CO2 column. In addition, CO2 measurements are more sensitive to the Doppler shift at high altitudes for IPDA lidar, so the largest differences in the CO2 columns are found on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in China. Traditional forest inventories are based on field surveys of established sample plots, which involve field measurements of individual trees within a sample plot and the selection of proper allometric equations for tree volume calculation. Thus, accurate field measurements and properly selected allometric equations are two crucial factors for providing high-quality tree volumes. One key problem is the difficulty in accurately acquiring tree height data, resulting in high uncertainty in tree volume calculation when the diameter at breast height (DBH) alone is used. This study examined the uncertainty of tree height measurements using different means and the impact of allometric models on tree volume estimation accuracy. Masson pine and eucalyptus plantations in Fujian Province, China, were selected as examples; their tree heights were measured three ways: using an 18-m telescopic pole, UAV Lidar (unmanned aerial vehicle, light detection and ranging) data, and direct measurement of felled trees, with the latest one as a reference. The DBH-based and DBH–height-based allometric equations corresponding to specific tree species were used for the calculations of tree volumes. The results show that (1) tree volumes calculated from the DBH-based models were lower than those from the DBH–height-based models. On average, tree volumes were underestimated by 0.018 m3 and 0.117 m3 for Masson pine and eucalyptus, respectively, while the relative root-mean-squared errors (RMSEr) were 24.04% and 33.90%, respectively, when using the DBH-based model; (2) the tree height extracted from UAV Lidar data was more accurate than that measured using a telescopic pole, because the pole measurement method generally underestimated the tree height, especially when the trees were taller than the length of the pole (18 m in our study); (3) the tree heights measured using different methods greatly impacted the accuracies of tree volumes calculated using the DBH–height model. The telescopic-pole-measured tree heights resulted in a relative error of 9.1–11.8% in tree volume calculations. This research implies that incorporation of UAV Lidar data with DBH field measurements can effectively improve tree volume estimation and could be a new direction for sample plot data collection in the future. Hurricanes often devastate trees throughout coastal China; accordingly, developing a method to quantitatively evaluate the changes in tree phenotypic characteristics under continuous strong winds is of great significance for guiding forest cultivation practices and mitigating wind hazards. For this research, we built a lifting steel truss carrying a large forced draft fan near a rubber plantation on Hainan Island, and we aligned three selected small rubber trees in a row in front of the fan (with separation distances from the forced draft fan outlet of approximately 1.3, 3.3, and 5.3 m) to explore the susceptibility of rubber trees to the mechanical loading of hurricane-level winds. By adjusting the power of the forced draft fan, four wind speeds were emitted: 0 m/s, 10.5 m/s, 13.5 m/s, and 17.5 m/s. Meanwhile, point clouds of the three rubber trees under different continuous wind speeds were acquired using two terrestrial laser scanners. Computer algorithms were applied to derive the key parameters of the three rubber trees, namely, the zenith and azimuth angles of each leaf, effective leaf area index (LAI), windward area of each tree, volume of the tree canopy, and trunk tilt angle, from these point clouds under all four wind speeds. The results show that by increasing the wind speed from 0 m/s to 17.5 m/s, the leaf zenith angles of the three rubber trees were unimodally distributed with the peak concentrated at 0°, while the leaf azimuth angles were bimodally distributed with the peaks concentrated at 0° and 360°. The effective LAI values of the three trees increased from 2.97, 4.77, and 3.63 (no wind) to 3.84, 5.9, and 4.29 (wind speed of 17.5 m/s), respectively, due to a decrease in the vertical crown projection area caused by the compression of the tree canopy. We also found that the effective LAI, windward area, and canopy volume of the third rubber tree (the tree farthest from the forced draft fan) varied less than those of the other two trees, reflecting the attenuation of the wind speed by the crowns of the two trees closer to the fan. The experimental results also indicate that the joint use of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data with computer graphics algorithms to analyse the dynamic changes in tree phenotypic characteristics during the passage of a hurricane is promising, enabling the development of a novel strategy for mitigating wind hazards. The proposed method with the designed device capable of producing an adjustable wind speed also has the potential to study the impacts of wind damage under various forest conditions by further modifying the tree spacing and tree species. Extracting street trees from mobile Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point clouds is still encountering challenges, such as low extraction accuracy and poor robustness in complex urban environment, and difficulty in the segmentation of overlapping trees. To solve these problems, this paper proposed a street tree extraction and segmentation method based on spatial geometric features of object primitives. In this paper, mobile LiDAR point clouds were first segmented into object primitives based on the proposed graph segmentation method, which can release the computation burden effectively. According to the spatial geometric features of the segmented object primitives, stem points were extracted. In doing so, the robustness and accuracy for stem detecting can be improved. Furthermore, voxel connectivity analysis and individual tree optimization were combined successively. In doing so, the neighboring trees could be separated successfully. Four datasets located in Henan Polytechnic University, China, were used for validating the performance of the proposed method. The four mobile LiDAR point clouds contained 106, 45, 76, and 46 trees, respectively. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can achieve the performance of individual tree separation in all the four testing plots. Forests in alpine mountainous regions are sensitive to global climate change. Accurate measurement of tree height is essential for forest aboveground biomass estimation. Unmanned aerial vehicle light detection and ranging (UAV-LiDAR) in tree height estimation has been extensively used in forestry inventories. This study investigated the influence of varying flight heights and point cloud densities on the extraction of tree height, and four flight heights (i.e., 85, 115, 145, and 175 m) were set in three Picea crassifolia plots in the Qilian Mountains. After point cloud data were classified, tree height was extracted from a canopy height model (CHM) on the basis of the individual tree segmentation. Through comparison with ground measurements, the tree height estimations of different flight heights and point cloud densities were analyzed. The results indicated that (1) with a flight height of 85 m, the tree height estimation achieved the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.75, RMSE = 2.65), and the lowest accuracy occurred at a height of 175 m (R2 = 0.65, RMSE = 3.00). (2) The accuracy of the tree height estimation decreased as the point cloud density decreased. The accuracies of tree height estimation from low-point cloud density (R2 = 0.70, RMSE = 2.75) and medium density (R2 = 0.69, RMSE = 2.80) were comparable. (3) Tree height was slightly underestimated in most cases when CHM-based segmentation methods were used. Consequently, a flight height of 145 m was more applicable for maintaining tree height estimation accuracy and assuring the safety of UAVs flying in alpine mountain regions. A point cloud density of 125–185 pts/m2 can guarantee tree height estimation accuracy. Accurate and automatic identification of tree species information at the individual tree scale is of great significance for fine-scale investigation and management of forest resources and scientific assessment of forest ecosystems. Despite the fact that numerous studies have been conducted on the delineation of individual tree crown and species classification using drone high-resolution red, green and blue (RGB) images, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, performing the above tasks simultaneously has rarely been explored, especially in complex forest environments. In this study, we improve upon the state of the Mask region-based convolution neural network (Mask R-CNN) with our proposed attention complementary network (ACNet) and edge detection R-CNN (ACE R-CNN) for individual tree species identification in high-density and complex forest environments. First, we propose ACNet as the feature extraction backbone network to fuse the weighted features extracted from RGB images and canopy height model (CHM) data through an attention complementary module, which is able to selectively fuse weighted features extracted from RGB and CHM data at different scales, and enables the network to focus on more effective information. Second, edge loss is added to the loss function to improve the edge accuracy of the segmentation, which is calculated through the edge detection filter introduced in the Mask branch of Mask R-CNN. We demonstrate the performance of ACE R-CNN for individual tree species identification in three experimental areas of different tree species in southern China with precision (P), recall (R), F1-score, and average precision (AP) above 0.9. Our proposed ACNet–the backbone network for feature extraction–has better performance in individual tree species identification compared with the ResNet50-FPN (feature pyramid network). The addition of the edge loss obtained by the Sobel filter further improves the identification accuracy of individual tree species and accelerates the convergence speed of the model training. This work demonstrates the improved performance of ACE R-CNN for individual tree species identification and provides a new solution for tree-level species identification in complex forest environments, which can support carbon stock estimation and biodiversity assessment. Regarded as a marked category of global forests, forest plantations not only have great significance for the development of the global economy, but also contribute ecological and social benefits. The accurate acquisition of the multi-scale (from individual tree to landscape level) and near-real-time information of structural parameters in plantations is the premise of decision-making in sustainable management for the whole forest farm, and it is also the basis for the evaluation of forest productivity in stands. The development and synergetic applications of multi-source and multi-platform remote sensing technology provide a technical basis for the highly accurate estimation of multi-scale forest structural parameters. In this study, we developed an advanced framework for estimating these parameters of forest plantations in multiple scales (individual tree, plot and landscape levels) based on the Unmanned Aircraft System Light Detection and Ranging (UAS-LiDAR) transects and wall-to-wall Sentinel-2 imagery, combined with the sample plot data in a typical forest farm plantation (mainly Larch, Chinese pine) of Northern China. The position and height of individual trees within the plots were extracted by the LiDAR-based point cloud segmentation (PCS) algorithm, and then different approaches to the extrapolation of forest structural parameters from the plot to landscape level were assessed. The results demonstrate that, firstly, the individual tree height obtained by PCS was of relatively high accuracy (rRMSE = 1.5–3.3%); secondly, the accuracy of the forest structure parameters of the sample plot scale estimated by UAS-LiDAR is rRMSE = 4.4–10.6%; and thirdly, the accuracy of the two-stage upscaling approach by UAS-LiDAR transects as an intermediate stage (rRMSE = 14.5–20.2%) performed better than the direct usage of Sentinel-2 data (rRMSE = 22.9–27.3%). This study demonstrated an advanced framework for creating datasets of multi-scale forest structural parameters in a forest plantation, and proved that the synergetic usage of UAS-LiDAR transects and full coverage medium-resolution satellite imagery can provide a high-precision and low-cost technical basis for the multi-level estimation of forest structural parameters. Forests are crucial in carbon sequestration and oxygen release. An accurate assessment of forest carbon storage is meaningful for Chinese cities to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. For an accurate estimation of regional-scale forest aboveground carbon density, this study applied a Sentinel-2 multispectral instrument (MSI), Advanced Land Observing Satellite 2 (ALOS-2) L-band, and Sentinel-1 C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to estimate and map the forest carbon density. Considering the forest field-inventory data of eastern China from 2018 as an experimental sample, we explored the potential of the deep-learning algorithms convolutional neural network (CNN) and Keras. The results showed that vegetation indices from Sentinel-2, backscatter and texture characters from ALOS-2, and coherence from Sentinel-1 were principal contributors to the forest carbon-density estimation. Furthermore, the CNN model was found to perform better than traditional models. Results of forest carbon-density estimation validated the improvements effectively by combining the optical and radar data. Forest dynamics, including forest loss and gain, are long-term complex ecological processes affected by nature and human activities. It is particularly important to understand the long-term forest dynamics of protected areas to evaluate their conservation efforts. This study adopted the Landsat tree-canopy cover (TCC) method to derive annual TCC data for the period 1984–2020 for the protected areas of northeast China, where protection policies have been carried out since the end of the 20th century, e.g., the Natural Forest Conversion Program (NFCP). A strong correlation was found between the TCC estimates derived from Landsat and LiDAR observations, suggesting the high accuracy of TCC. Forest loss and gain events were also identified from the time series of TCC estimates. High correlations were reported for both forest loss (Producer's accuracy = 85.21%; User's accuracy = 84.26%) and gain (Producer's accuracy = 87.74%; User's accuracy = 88.31%), suggesting that the approach can be used for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the NFCP and other forest conservation efforts. The results revealed a fluctuating upward trend of the TCC of the protected area from 1986 to 2018. The increased area of TCC was much larger than the decreased area, accounting for 59.68% and 40.34%, respectively, suggesting the effectiveness of protection policies. Since the NFCP was officially implemented in 1998, deforestation was effectively curbed, the area of forest loss was significantly reduced (slope: −14.24%/year), and the area of forest gain significantly increased (slope: 4.13%/year). We found that regional forest changes were mainly manifested in "forest gain after loss (forest recovery)" and "forest gain with no loss (forest newborn)", accounting for 40.29% and 37.28% of the total area of forest change, respectively. Moreover, the forest gain area far exceeds the forest loss area, reaching 11.24 million hectares, suggesting a successful forest recovery due to forest protection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate estimation and extrapolation of forest structural parameters in planted forests are essential for monitoring forest resources, investigating their ecosystem services (e.g., forest structure and functions), as well as supporting decisions for precision silviculture. Advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-borne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology have enhanced our ability to precisely characterize the 3-D structure of the forest canopy with high flexibility, usually within forest plots and stands. For wall-to-wall forest structure mapping in broader landscapes, samples (transects) of UAV-LiDAR datasets are a cost-efficient solution as an intermediate layer for extrapolation from field plots to full-coverage multispectral satellite imageries. In this study, an advanced two-stage extrapolation approach was established to estimate and map large area forest structural parameters (i.e., mean DBH, dominant height, volume, and stem density), in synergy with field plots and UAV-LiDAR and GF-6 satellite imagery, in a typical planted forest of southern China. First, estimation models were built and used to extrapolate field plots to UAV-LiDAR transects; then, the maps of UAV-LiDAR transects were extrapolated to the whole study area using the wall-to-wall grid indices that were calculated from GF-6 satellite imagery. By comparing with direct prediction models that were fitted by field plots and GF-6-derived spectral indices, the results indicated that the two-stage extrapolation models (R2 = 0.64–0.85, rRMSE = 7.49–26.85%) obtained higher accuracy than direct prediction models (R2 = 0.58–0.75, rRMSE = 21.31–38.43%). In addition, the effect of UAV-LiDAR point density and sampling intensity for estimation accuracy was studied by sensitivity analysis as well. The results showed a stable level of accuracy for approximately 10% of point density (34 pts·m−2) and 20% of sampling intensity. To understand the error propagation through the extrapolation procedure, a modified U-statistics uncertainty analysis was proposed to characterize pixel-level estimates of uncertainty and the results demonstrated that the uncertainty was 0.75 cm for mean DBH, 1.23 m for dominant height, 14.77 m3·ha−1 for volume and 102.72 n·ha−1 for stem density, respectively. Canopy height greatly affects the biomass stock, carbon dynamics, and maintenance of biodiversity in forests. Previous research reported that the maximum forest canopy height (Hmax) at global and regional scales could be explained by variations in water or energy availability, that is, the water- or energy-related hypothesis. However, fundamental gaps remain in our understanding of how different drivers (i.e., water and energy) contribute to the Hmax at the local scale. In this study, we selected eight dynamic forest plots (20–30 ha) across a latitudinal gradient (from 21.6° N to 48.1° N) in China and measured the canopy structure using airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. Based on the LiDAR point cloud data, we extracted the maximum tree height (Hmax) in a 20 × 20 m quadrat as a proxy for canopy height, and the topographic wetness index (TWI) and digital terrain model-derived insolation (DTMI) were calculated as proxies for water and energy conditions. We used a linear mixed model and spatial simultaneous autoregressive error model to quantify how TWI and DTMI contributed to variations in Hmax at the local scale. We found that the positive effect of TWI was stronger in subtropical and tropical forests, highlighting that water was the main factor that drives the canopy height pattern in these regions. In contrast, although the effects of DTMI can be both positive and negative, its relative contribution was higher in temperate forest plots than in other forest types, supporting the idea that energy input is more critical for Hmax in temperate forests. Overall, our study revealed the directional change from energy to water limitation from temperate to subtropical and tropical forests. Water is an imperative part of the Earth and an essential resource in human life and production. Under the effects of climate change and human activities, the spatial and temporal distribution of water bodies has been changing, and the shortage of water resources is becoming increasingly serious worldwide. Therefore, the monitoring of water bodies is indispensable. Remote sensing has the advantages of real time, wide coverage, and rich information and has become a brand-new technical means to quickly obtain water information. This study summarizes the current common methods of water extraction based on optical and radar images, including the threshold method, support vector machine, decision tree, object-oriented extraction, and deep learning, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each method. These methods were applied to the Huai River Basin in China and Nam Co on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The extraction results show that all the aforementioned approaches can obtain reliable results. Among them, the threshold segmentation method based on normalized difference water index is more robust than others. In the water extraction process, there are still many problems that restrict the accuracy of the results. Oil tea (Camellia oleifera) is one of the world's major woody edible oil plants and is vital in providing food and raw materials and ensuring water conservation. The yield of oil tea can directly reflect the growth condition of oil tea forests, and rapid and accurate yield measurement is directly beneficial to efficient oil tea forest management. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR), which can penetrate the canopy to acquire the geometric attributes of targets, has become an effective and popular method of yield identification for agricultural products. However, the common geometric attribute information obtained by LiDAR systems is always limited in terms of the accuracy of yield identification. In this study, to improve yield identification efficiency and accuracy, the red-green-blue (RGB) and luminance-bandwidth-chrominance (i.e., YUV color spaces) were used to identify the point clouds of oil tea fruits. An optimized mean shift clustering algorithm was constructed for oil tea fruit point cloud extraction and product identification. The point cloud data of oil tea trees were obtained using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), and field measurements were conducted in Changsha County, central China. In addition, the common mean shift, density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN), and maximum–minimum distance clustering were established for comparison and validation. The results showed that the optimized mean shift clustering algorithm achieved the best identification in both the RGB and YUV color spaces, with detection ratios that were 9.02%, 54.53%, and 3.91% and 7.05%, 62.35%, and 10.78% higher than those of the common mean shift clustering, DBSCAN clustering, and maximum-minimum distance clustering algorithms, respectively. In addition, the improved mean shift clustering algorithm achieved a higher recognition rate in the YUV color space, with an average detection rate of 81.73%, which was 2.4% higher than the average detection rate in the RGB color space. Accurate estimation of forest biomass is the basis for monitoring forest productivity and carbon sink function, which is of great significance for the formulation of forest carbon neutralization strategy and forest quality improvement measures. Taking Guizhou, a typical karst region in China, as the research area, this study used Landsat 8 OLI, Sentinel-1A, and China national forest resources continuous inventory data (NFCI) in 2015 to build a deep belief network (DBN) model for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation. Based on the introduction of forest canopy density (FCD), we improved the DBN model to design the K-DBN model with the highest estimation accuracy is selected for AGB inversion and spatial mapping. The results showed that: (1) The determination coefficients R2 of DBN is 0.602, which are 0.208, 0.101 higher than that of linear regression (LR) and random forest (RF) model. (2) The K-DBN algorithm was designed based on FCD to optimize the DBN model, which can alleviate the common problems of low-value overestimation and high-value underestimation in AGB estimation to a certain extent to improve the estimation accuracy. The maximum R2 of the model reached 0.848, and we mapped the forest AGB using the K-DBN model in the study area in 2015. The conclusion of this study: Based on multi-source optical and radar data, the retrieval accuracy of forest AGB can be improved by considering the FCD, and the deep learning algorithm K-DBN is excellent in forest AGB remote sensing estimation. Huaneng Rudong 300 MW offshore wind farm project is located in eastern China. The wake effect is one of the major concerns for wind farm operators, as all 70 units are plotted in ranks, and the sea surface roughness is low. This paper investigated the wake intensity by combining a field test and a numerical simulation. To carry out further yaw optimization, a Gaussian wake model was adopted. Firstly, a 3D Light Detection and Ranging device (LiDAR) was used to capture the features in both horizontal and vertical directions of the wake. It indicated that Gaussian wake model can precisely predict the characteristics under time average and steady state in the wind farm. The predicted annual energy production (AEP) of the whole wind farm by the Gaussian model is compared with the calculation result of the actuator line (AL)-based LES method, and the difference between the two methods is mostly under 10%. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology is known as one of the most effective methods for active landslide identification and deformation monitoring in large areas, and thus it is conducive to preventing and mitigating the losses caused by landslides. However, great uncertainty inevitably exists due to influences of complex terrains, dense vegetations, and atmospheric interferences in the southwestern mountainous area of China, and this is associated with false or erroneous judgment during the process of landslide identification. In this study, a landslide identification method is put forward by integrating InSAR technology and airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology. Via this method, surface deformation characteristics detected by InSAR technology and micro-geomorphic features reflected by LiDAR technology were used to identify and map landslides of large areas. Herein, the method was applied to process 224 Sentinel-1 images covering Danba County and its surrounding areas (540 km2) from October 2014 to September 2020. Firstly, 44 active landslides with total areas of 59 km2 were detected by stacking InSAR technology. Then, major regions up to 135 km2 were validated by data gained from the airborne LiDAR technology. Particularly, several large landslides with lengths and/or widths of more than 2 km were found. Further, the precipitation data were integrated with the above results to analyze the temporal deformation characteristics of three typical landslides from major regions via SBAS InSAR technology. The key findings were as follows: (1) The combination of InSAR and LiDAR technologies could improve the accuracy of landslide detection and identification; (2) there was a significant correlation between temporal deformation characteristics of some landslides and monthly rainfall, with an obvious hysteretic effect existing between the initiation timing of rainfall and that of deformation; (3) the results of this study will be important guidance for the prevention and control of geological hazards in Danba County and areas with similar complex geomorphological conditions by helping effectively identify and map landslides. The spaceborne double-pulse integrated-path differential absorption (IPDA) light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system was found to be helpful in observing atmospheric CO2 and understanding the carbon cycle. The airborne experiments of a scale prototype of China's planned spaceborne IPDA LIDAR was implemented in 2019. A problem with data inversion caused by the detector module nonlinearity was found. Through many experiments, the amplifier circuit board (ACB) of the detector module was proved to be the main factor causing the nonlinearity. Through amplifier circuit optimization, the original bandwidth of the ACB was changed to 1 MHz by using a fifth-order active filter. Compared with the original version, the linearity of optimized ACB is improved from 42.6% to 0.0747%. The optimized ACB was produced and its linearity was verified by experiments. In addition, the output waveform of the optimized ACB changes significantly, which will affect the random error (RE) of the optimized IPDA LIDAR system. Through the performance simulation, the RE of more than 90% of the global area is less than 0.728 ppm. Finally, the transfer model of the detector module was given, which will be helpful for the further optimization of the CO2 column-averaged dry-air mixing ratio (XCO2) inversion algorithm. Detecting and segmenting individual trees in forest ecosystems with high-density and overlapping crowns often results in bias due to the limitations of the commonly used canopy height model (CHM). To address such limitations, this paper proposes a new method to segment individual trees and extract tree structural parameters. The method involves the following key steps: (1) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-scanned, high-density laser point clouds were classified, and a vegetation point cloud density model (VPCDM) was established by analyzing the spatial density distribution of the classified vegetation point cloud in the plane projection; and (2) a local maximum algorithm with an optimal window size was used to detect tree seed points and to extract tree heights, and an improved watershed algorithm was used to extract the tree crowns. The proposed method was tested at three sites with different canopy coverage rates in a pine-dominated forest in northern China. The results showed that (1) the kappa coefficient between the proposed VPCDM and the commonly used CHM was 0.79, indicating that performance of the VPCDM is comparable to that of the CHM; (2) the local maximum algorithm with the optimal window size could be used to segment individual trees and obtain optimal single-tree segmentation accuracy and detection rate results; and (3) compared with the original watershed algorithm, the improved watershed algorithm significantly increased the accuracy of canopy area extraction. In conclusion, the proposed VPCDM may provide an innovative data segmentation model for light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based high-density point clouds and enhance the accuracy of parameter extraction. The water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir is a serious landslide-prone area. However, current remote sensing methods for landslide mapping and detection in the WLFZ are insufficient because of difficulties in data acquisition and lack of facade information. We proposed a novel shipborne mobile photogrammetry approach for 3D mapping and landslide detection in the WLFZ for the first time, containing a self-designed shipborne hardware platform and a data acquisition and processing workflow. To evaluate the accuracy and usability of the resultant 3D models in the WLFZ, four bundle block adjustment (BBA) control configurations were developed and adopted. In the four configurations, the raw Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data, the raw GNSS data and fixed camera height, the GCPs extracted from aerial photogrammetric products, and the mobile Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud were used. A comprehensive accuracy assessment of the 3D models was conducted, and the comparative results indicated the BBA with GCPs extracted from the aerial photogrammetric products was the most practical configuration (RMSE 2.00 m in plane, RMSE 0.46 m in height), while the BBA with the mobile LiDAR point cloud as a control provided the highest georeferencing accuracy (RMSE 0.59 m in plane, RMSE 0.40 m in height). Subsequently, the landslide detection ability of the proposed approach was compared with multisource remote sensing images through visual interpretation, which showed that the proposed approach provided the highest landslide detection rate and unique advantages in small landslide detection as well as in steep terrains due to the more detailed features of landslides provided by the shipborne 3D models. In general, low density airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data are typically used to obtain the average height of forest trees. If the data could be used to obtain the tree height at the single tree level, it would greatly extend the usage of the data. Since the tree top position is often missed by the low density LiDAR pulse point, the estimated forest tree height at the single tree level is generally lower than the actual tree height when low density LiDAR data are used for the estimation. To resolve this problem, in this paper, a modified approach based on three-dimensional (3D) parameter tree model was adopted to reconstruct the tree height at the single tree level by combining the characteristics of high resolution remote sensing images and low density airborne LiDAR data. The approach was applied to two coniferous forest plots in the subtropical forest region, Fujian Province, China. The following conclusions were reached after analyzing the results: The marker-controlled watershed segmentation method is able to effectively extract the crown profile from sub meter-level resolution images without the aid of the height information of LiDAR data. The adaptive local maximum method satisfies the need for detecting the vertex of a single tree crown. The improved following-valley approach is available for estimating the tree crown diameter. The 3D parameter tree model, which can take advantage of low-density airborne LiDAR data and high resolution images, is feasible for improving the estimation accuracy of the tree height. Compared to the tree height results from only using the low density LiDAR data, this approach can achieve higher estimation accuracy. The accuracy of the tree height estimation at the single tree level for two test areas was more than 80%, and the average estimation error of the tree height was 0.7 m. Multidimensional hydrodynamic modelling becomes tricky when lacking the bathymetric data representing the continuous underwater riverbed surface. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based and radar-based digital elevation models (DEMs) are often used to build the high-accuracy floodplain topography, while in most cases the submerged riverbed could not be detected because both radar and LiDAR operate at wavelengths that cannot penetrate the water. Data from other sources is therefore required to establish the riverbed topography. The inundated river channel is often surveyed with an echo sounder to obtain discrete cross-section data. In this context, an improved algorithm based on the classic flow-oriented coordinates transformation is proposed to generate the riverbed topography using surveyed cross-sections. The dimensionless channel width (DCW) processing method is developed within the algorithm to largely increase the prediction accuracy, especially for the meandering reaches. The generated riverbed topography can be merged with the floodplain DEM to create an integrated DEM for 2D and 3D hydrodynamic simulations. Two case studies are carried out: a benchmark test in the Baxter River, United States, with carefully surveyed channel–floodplain topographic data to validate the algorithm, and a 3D hydrodynamic modelling-based application in Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area, China. Results from the benchmark case demonstrate very good consistency between the created topography and the surveyed data with root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.17m and the interpolation accuracy was increased by 55% compared to the traditional method without DCW processing. 3D hydrodynamic modelling results match the observed field data well, indicating that the generated DEM of the TGR area was good enough not only to predict water depths along the tributary, but also to allow the hydrodynamic model to capture the typical features of the complex density currents caused by both the topography of the tributary estuary and the operation rules of TGR. Mangrove ecosystems are valuable, yet vulnerable, and therefore they have been an important subject of protection and restoration in China. Reliable information on long-term China mangrove dynamics is lacking but vital to analyze the driving forces and evaluate the efforts of mangrove conversation. This study aims to quantify the conversions among mangroves and other land covers with high accuracy. The updated mangrove base map for 2018 was produced by integrating Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar 2 (PALSAR-2) yearly mosaics and Landsat imagery with an overall accuracy of 95.23 ± 6.02%. Then, a novel approach combining map-to-image and image-to-image methods was proposed to detect the changed pixels in mangrove forests from 1985 to 2018. The mangrove base map was adopted to mask the images from other years. To determine the changed pixels, the differencing values in the masked area between two images were calculated and compared with the corresponding thresholds. Based on the changed pixels, the possible driving forces were analyzed and associated with socioeconomic development. The resultant mangrove dynamics demonstrated that mangrove forests in China experienced a tendency of loss first and recovery later during the past 30 years. Most mangrove gains came from aquaculture and mudflat, whilst losses were due to the built-up construction and aquaculture reclamation. These conversions indicated that mangrove deforestations were mainly due to human-induced destruction, while the recoveries were strongly associated with conservation and restoration actions. This paper proposes a combined approach comprising a set of methods for the high-precision mapping of soil moisture in a study area located in Jiangsu Province of China, based on the Chinese C-band synthetic aperture radar data of GF-3 and high spatial-resolution optical data of GF-1, in situ experimental datasets and background knowledge. The study was conducted in three stages: First, in the process of eliminating the effect of vegetation canopy, an empirical vegetation water content model and a water cloud model with localized parameters were developed to obtain the bare soil backscattering coefficient. Second, four commonly used models (advanced integral equation model (AIEM), look-up table (LUT) method, Oh model, and the Dubois model) were coupled to acquire nine soil moisture retrieval maps and algorithms. Finally, a simple and effective optimal solution method was proposed to select and combine the nine algorithms based on classification strategies devised using three types of background knowledge. A comprehensive evaluation was carried out on each soil moisture map in terms of the root-mean-square-error (RMSE), Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), mean absolute error (MAE), and mean bias (bias). The results show that for the nine individual algorithms, the estimated model constructed using the AIEM (mv1) was significantly more accurate than those constructed using the other models (RMSE = 0.0321 cm³/cm³, MAE = 0.0260 cm³/cm³, and PCC = 0.9115), followed by the Oh model (m_v5) and LUT inversion method under HH polarization (mv2). Compared with the independent algorithms, the optimal solution methods have significant advantages; the soil moisture map obtained using the classification strategy based on the percentage content of clay was the most satisfactory (RMSE = 0.0271 cm³/cm³, MAE = 0.0225 cm³/cm³, and PCC = 0.9364). This combined method could not only effectively integrate the optical and radar satellite data but also couple a variety of commonly used inversion models, and at the same time, background knowledge was introduced into the optimal solution method. Rapidly advancing airborne laser scanning technology has become greatly useful to estimate tree- and stand-level variables at a large scale using high spatial resolution data. Compared with that of ground measurements, the accuracy of the inferred information of diameter at breast height (DBH) from a remotely sensed database and the models developed with traditional regression approaches (e.g., ordinary least square regression) may not be sufficient. Thus, this regression approach is no longer appropriate to develop accurate models and predict DBH from remotely sensed-related variables because DBH is subject to the random effects of forest stands. This study developed a generalized nonlinear mixed-effects DBH estimation model from remotely sensed imagery data. The light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-derived stand canopy density, crown projection area, and tree height were used as predictors in the DBH estimation model. These variables can be more readily measured over an extensive forest area with higher accuracy compared to the conventional field-based methods. The airborne LiDAR data for a total of 402 Picea crassifolia Kom trees on a sample plot that were divided into 16 sub-sample plots and located in the most important distribution region of western China were used. The leave-one sub-sample plot-out cross-validation method was applied to evaluate the model's prediction accuracy. The results indicated that the random effects of the sub-sample plot on the prediction of DBH were large and their inclusion into the DBH model significantly improved the prediction accuracy. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model at the mean (M) response was also substantially improved relative to the accuracy obtained from the base model. Among several tree selection alternatives evaluated, a sample size of the two largest trees per sub-sample plot used in estimating the random effects showed a significantly higher accuracy compared to other sampling alternatives. This sample size would balance both the measurement cost and potential prediction errors. The nonlinear mixed-effects DBH estimation model at the M response can also be applied if obtaining the estimates of individual tree DBH with a relatively lower cost, and a lower prediction accuracy was the purpose of the study. Based on application of the atomic filter technology in a signal detection system of lidar, the diurnal observation of sodium lidar were obtained using the system at the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Beijing Yanqing station (40.5° N, 116° E) in April 2014. During the lidar observation period, among the 103 cases of continuous daytime observations, the longest time was 181 h. In the case of a continuous observation period of 5 days (13–18 October 2014), the signal-to-noise ratio reached to 19:1 at 12:00–13:00 Local Time of the daytime, when the spatial and time resolutions were respectively set to 96 m of 167 s. The improvements resulted in the highest detection level of any existing diurnal lidars in China. Some interesting phenomena such as the sporadic sodium layer have also been observed during the daytime. The daytime capability extended the observing time range of the earlier systems that were limited to only nighttime observations. Airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) remote sensing for individual tree-level forest inventory necessitates proper extraction of individual trees and accurate measurement of tree structural parameters. Due to the inadequate tree finding capability offered by LiDAR technology and the complex patterns of forest canopies, significant omission and commission errors occur frequently in the segmentation results. Aimed at error reduction and accuracy refinement, this paper presents a novel adaptive mean shift-based clustering scheme aided by a tree trunk detection technique to segment individual trees and estimate tree structural parameters based solely on the airborne LiDAR data. Tree trunks are detected by analyzing points' vertical histogram to detach all potential crown points and then clustering the separated trunk points according to their horizontal mutual distances. The detected trunk information is used to adaptively calibrate the kernel bandwidth of the mean shift procedure in the fine segmentation stage by applying an original 2D (two-dimensional) estimation of individual crown diameters. Trunk detection results and LiDAR point clusters generated by the adaptive mean shift procedures serve as mutual references for final detection of individual trees. Experimental results show that a combination of adaptive mean shift clustering and detected tree trunk can provide a significant performance improvement in individual tree-level forest measurement. Compared with conventional clustering techniques, the trunk detection-aided mean shift clustering approach can detect 91.1% of the trees ("recall") with a higher tree positioning accuracy (the mean positioning error is reduced by 33%) in a multi-layered coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest in South China, and 93.5% of the identified trees are correct ("precision"). The tree detection brings the estimation of structural parameters for individual trees up to an accuracy level: −2.2% mean relative error and 5.8% relative RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) for tree height and 0.6% mean relative error and 21.9% relative RMSE for crown diameter, respectively.
