The coal gangue coarse-aggregate content in ordinary concrete should not be too large. In order to further improve the utilization rate of coal gangue coarse aggregate, this study used the principle of "strong wrapped weak" to prepare high-performance concrete. This study considered four factors, namely, water–binder (W/B) ratios, non-spontaneous combustion coal gangue (NCCG) coarse-aggregate contents, fly ash–slag mass ratios, and silica fume coating to prepare high-performance concrete. The workability, mechanical, and durability properties were studied, and the changes in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of concrete before and after sulfate attack and freeze–thaw cycles were analyzed based on the SEM test. The life prediction of NCCG coarse-aggregate high-performance concrete was carried out based on the grey system GM(1,1) prediction model. The results show that the NCCG coarse-aggregate contents have the greatest effect on compressive strength, sulfate resistance, and frost resistance. The W/B ratio has the greatest effect on the anti-carbonization properties. Fly ash–slag mixing can obtain better durability. Considering the effect on the design service life of high-performance concrete, NCCG coarse aggregate is used to prepare high-performance concrete in North China, and the recommended content is 60%; in the Northwest and Northeast regions, the recommended content is 45%. Over the past 20 years, as the depth and diameter of shaft lines increased in China, the cracking and water leakage of the inner walls of frozen shafts have become increasingly severe, resulting in significant safety threats and economic losses. Understanding the stress variation patterns of cast-in-place inner walls under the combined effects of temperature and constraint during construction is a prerequisite for evaluating the crack resistance performance of inner walls and preventing water leakage in frozen shafts. The temperature stress testing machine is an important instrument for studying the early-age crack resistance performance of concrete materials under the combined effects of temperature and constraint. However, existing testing machines have shortcomings in terms of applicable specimen cross-sectional shapes, temperature control methods for concrete structures, and axial loading capacity. In this paper, a novel temperature stress testing machine suitable for the inner wall structure shape, capable of simulating the hydration heat of the inner walls, was developed. Then, a reduced-scale model of the inner wall according to similarity criteria was manufactured indoors. Finally, preliminary investigations of the temperature, strain, and stress variations of the inner wall under 100% end constraint conditions were conducted by simulating the actual hydration heating and cooling process of the inner walls. Results show that the hydration heating and cooling process of the inner wall can be accurately simulated. After approximately 69 h of concrete casting, the accumulated relative displacement and strain of the end-constrained inner wall model were −244.2 mm and 187.8 με, respectively. The end constraint force of the model increased to a maximum value of 1.7 MPa and then rapidly unloaded, causing the model concrete to crack in tension. The temperature stress testing method presented in this paper provides a reference for scientifically formulating technical approaches to prevent cracking in cast-in-place concrete inner walls. Chloride penetration resistance is one of the most important performance measures for the evaluation of the durability of concrete under a chloride environment. Due to differences in theory and experimental conditions, the durability index (chloride diffusion coefficient) obtained from laboratory accelerated migration tests cannot reflect the real process of chloride ingress into concrete in the natural environment. The difference in test methods must be considered and the transfer parameter k t should be introduced into the service life prediction model when the test results of accelerated methods are used. According to the test data of coastal exposure in South China, the attenuation rule of the chloride diffusion coefficient of different cement-based materials changed with time and was analyzed in this paper. Based on the diffusion coefficient–time curve, the theoretical natural diffusion coefficients of 28 d and 56 d were deduced, which were compared with the chloride diffusion coefficients obtained from the non-steady-state rapid migration method (RCM) at the same age. Therefore, the transfer parameter k t that expounds the relationship between concrete resistance to chloride permeability under a non-stationary electrical accelerated state and natural diffusion in the marine environment can be calculated; thus, the RCM testing index can be used to evaluate the long-term performance of the concrete structure in the marine environment. Coal gangue (CG) represents a huge amount of industrial solid waste in China, and usually is used as a coarse aggregate to produce low-strength coal-gangue-based concrete. In this paper, in order to prove the possibility to obtain a higher-strength concrete with a higher CG utilization rate, reactive powder concrete (RPC) with coal gangue as a sand replacement at different replacement ratios was studied. RPC samples were prepared by replacing natural river sand (RS) with CG sand at different CG/RS weight ratios from 0–100% at intervals of 25%. Mechanical tests were carried out, and the microstructure features of RPC samples at 28 days were characterized. The test results showed that strong back shrinkage of strength existed. On days 7 and 14, the flexural strengths of samples with CG/RS replacement ratios of 0–75% fluctuated around the mean value. Strengths of samples with a CG/RS replacement ratio of 100% dropped off. However, on day 28, the flexural strengths of samples with CG were all lower than the strengths of samples on days 7 and 14. The flexural strengths and compressive strengths of the RPC with a CG/RS replacement ratio of 100% on day 14 were 14.09 MPa and 37.03 MPa, respectively, which decreased to 6.42 MPa and 28.44 MPa, respectively, on day 28. Compared with natural river sand, CG sand reduced the working performance, compressive strength, and flexural strength of RPC. Microscopic analysis showed that on day 28, increasing the CG replacement ratio could inhibit cement hydration, weaken the interface transition zone, and lead to the degradation of the RPC's performance. High titanium heavy slag is one kind of solid waste that exists in large amounts in the southwest of China. In this paper, this high titanium heavy slag is used as natural pre-wetted material in concrete because of its porous structure. Three kinds of aggregates are used in this concrete. The first one is natural limestone and river sand. The second one is dry slag fine aggregate and coarse aggregate. The third one is pre-wetted coarse slag aggregate and dry slag fine aggregate. The strength, dry shrinkage, autogenous shrinkage, relative humidity, pore size distribution, stress–strain relationship, micro-hardness and chloride penetration of concrete composed of the above three aggregates are tested in this study. The results show that pre-wetted slag aggregate is a suitable internal curing material. The concrete with pre-wetted slag aggregate shows higher strength, lower shrinkage and smaller porosity. The water absorbed in the slag aggregate can be released effectively to increase the relative humidity, accelerate hydration, improve porosity and increase the interface strength. Over the vast Northwest China, arid desert contains high concentrations of sulfate, chloride, and other chemicals in the ground water, which poses serious challenges to infrastructure construction that routinely utilizes portland cement concrete. Rapid industrialization in the region has been generating huge amounts of mineral admixtures, such as fly ash and slags from energy and metallurgical industries. These industrial by-products would turn into waste materials if not utilized in time. The present study evaluated the suitability of utilizing local mineral admixtures in significant quantities for producing quality concrete mixtures that can withstand the harsh chemical environment without compromising the essential mechanical properties. Comprehensive chemical, mechanical, and durability tests were conducted in the laboratory to characterize the properties of the local cementitious mineral admixtures, cement mortar and portland cement concrete mixtures containing these admixtures. The results from this study indicated that the sulfate resistance of concrete was effectively improved by adding local class F fly ash and slag, or by applying sulfate resistance cement to the mixtures. It is noteworthy that concrete containing local mineral admixtures exhibited much lower permeability (in terms of chloride ion penetration) than ordinary portland cement concrete while retaining the same mechanical properties; whereas concrete mixtures made with sulfate resistance cement had significantly reduced strength and much increased chloride penetration comparing to the other mixtures. Hence, the use of local mineral admixtures in Northwest China in concrete mixtures would be beneficial to the performance of concrete, as well as to the protection of environment. Aiming at the problem that ordinary cement concrete is subjected to damage in heavy saline soil areas in China, a new type of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete is prepared by using the gelling properties of magnesium oxychloride cement in this study, and the erosion resistance of the synthesized magnesium oxychloride cement concrete in concentrated brine of salt lakes is studied through the full immersion test. The effects of concentrated brine of salt lakes on the macroscopic, microscopic morphology, phase composition and mechanical properties of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete are investigated by means of macro-morphology, erosion depth, SEM, XRD and strength changes. The salt erosion resistance mechanism of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete is revealed. The results demonstrate that under the environment of full immersion in concentrated brine of salt lakes, there is no macroscopic phenomenon of concrete damage due to salt crystallization, and the main phase composition is basically unchanged. The microscopic morphology mostly changes from needle-rod-like to gel-like. Due to the formation of a new 5·1·8 phase on the surface layer and the increase in compactness, its compressive strength has a gradual increase trend. Based on the engineering application of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete, it is further confirmed that magnesium oxychloride cement concrete has excellent salt erosion resistance and good weather resistance, which provides theoretical support for future popularization and application. This paper presents an experimental and analytical investigation on the performance of partial penetration welds used to adjoin steel plates in irregular shaped multicell concrete filled steel tubes. The experimental program of this study is designed based on an actual implementation of such members as mega columns in a super high rise building in China. A total of six specimens are designed with different plate arrangements for the purpose of testing the performance of the partial penetration welds at different locations of the specimen. The designed specimens are tested under different load procedures and directions; this is achieved by placing them in vertical and slantwise manners between two loading plates which impose monotonic and cyclic actions. The failure conditions of each of the tested specimens are presented and discussed in detail and are based on the conclusions drawn from the experimental observations; the partial penetration weld at the corner of the tested specimens is found to be the most vulnerable. To facilitate large scale analysis, a finite element model constructed by the finite element analysis program ABAQUS is verified against experimental results. The evaluation of the stress at the partial penetration welded corner is carried out following an empirical procedure, which is adopted due to the complexity of the problem domain. The adopted procedure consists of two steps: the first one is to initially evaluate the stress based on an existing method in the literature, and the second one is to fit the results of the initial evaluation with the finite element model results based on parametric and regression analysis. After performing regression analysis, a formula to predict the weld stress is concluded, and the results of the proposed equation are found to be satisfactory when compared with the finite element model results. Polymer-modified concrete and fiber concrete are two excellent paving materials that improve the performance of some concrete, but the performance of single application material is still limited. In this paper, polymer-modified concrete with strong deformation and fiber concrete with obvious crack resistance and reinforcement effect were compounded by using the idea of composite material design so as to obtain a high-performance pavement material. The basic mechanical properties of high-content hybrid fiber–polymer-modified concrete, such as workability, compression, flexural resistance, and environmental durability (such as sulfate resistance) were studied by using the test regulations of cement concrete in China. The main results were as follows. (1) The hybrid fiber–polymer concrete displayed reliable working performance, high stiffness, and a modulus of elasticity as high as 35.93 GPa. (2) The hybrid fiber–polymer concrete had a compressive strength of 52.82 MPa, which was 31.2% higher than that of the plain C40 concrete (40.25 MPa); the strength of bending of the hybrid concrete was 11.51 MPa, 191.4% higher than that of the plain concrete (3.95 MPa). (3) The corrosion resistance value of the hybrid fiber–polymer concrete was 81.31%, indicating its adjustability to sulfate attack environments. (4) According to cross-sectional scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, the hybrid fiber–polymer concrete was seemingly more integrated with a dense layer of cementing substance on its surface along with fewer microholes and microcracks as when compared to the ordinary concrete. The research showed that hybrid fiber–polymer concrete had superior strength and environmental erosion resistance and was a pavement material with superior mechanical properties. Antimony (Sb) is a trace element applied widely in modern industry. A large number of tailing solid wastes are left and accumulated in the mining area after purifying the precious antimony from the antimony ores, causing serious pollution to the environment. The major aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of utilizing antimony tailing coarse aggregate (ATCA) as a complete substitute for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in high-strength concrete. Concrete specimens with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% ATCA replacing the NCA in conventional concrete were prepared for evaluating the performance of ATCA concrete. The investigators find that ATCA concrete has good workability, and the mechanical properties and long-term behavior (shrinkage and creep) of ATCA concrete with all replacement levels are superior to those of NCA concrete. The durability indices of ATCA concrete, such as the frost-resistant, chloride permeability, and resistance to carbonation, are better than those of NCA concrete. While the alkali activity and cracking sensitivity behavior of ATCA concrete seem to be decreased, nevertheless, the difference is not significant and can be neglected. The researchers demonstrate that all of the control indices of ATCA concrete meet the requirements of the current industry standards of China. In this research, the sustainable applications for utilizing antimony tailing coarse aggregate (ATCA) in concrete is investigated. Comprehensive verifications were performed by a series of experiments on the characteristic of ATCA and the toxicity risks of concrete. Firstly, a real case study of utilization of ATCA as a complete substitute for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in high strength concrete was conducted. Then, chemical composition of ATCA was tested. It is demonstrated that the essential mineral is SiO2 and the lithology of ATCA is quartzite. The mechanical properties, coarse quality of ATCA, and NCA were studied and compared. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and compressive elastic modulus of ATWR are 221.51 MPa, 5.93 MPa, and 3.33 × 104 MPa, which are 1.31, 2.22, 1.40 times of that of NR, respectively. All of the quality control indices of ATCA meet the requirements of the current industry standards of China. Finally, the toxicity risks of ATCA concrete were investigated. It is illustrated that the leaching of main heavy metals including Sb, As, Hg, Pb, Cd, and Zn in the ATCA concrete under different pH conditions are below the regulatory limits. Damage to concrete structures with gypsum-contaminated aggregate occurs frequently. Aggregates in much of the southern part of China are contaminated with gypsum. Therefore, in this study, the effects of using different quantities of gypsum-contaminated aggregate on the expansion and compressive strength of concrete were investigated over a period of one year. Two groups of concrete were designed with the gypsum-contaminated aggregate containing different parts of fine and coarse aggregate, respectively. The SO3 contents were 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 3%, 5%, and 7% by weight of aggregate. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to analyze the change in mineral composition over time. The microstructure was also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The results showed that significant expansion and great loss in compressive strength did not occur in concrete if the content of SO3 lay below 1.5% and 3% in fine and coarse aggregates, respectively. The concentration of sulfate ions in concrete was not enough to form new a phase of gypsum. During the process of internal sulfate attack, the content of gypsum decreased and the content of ettringite increased. Ettringite was the main reason for the expansion damage of concrete. Additionally, the fracture mode of internal sulfate attack on concrete was the crack extension from gypsum to paste; finally, the aggregate separated from the paste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
