Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is an important parameter in the plant photosynthesis process, which can relate to plant growth, crop water use, and leaf gas exchange. Previously, many researchers utilized commercially available sensors to monitor PAR. The high cost of the commercially available PAR sensors has limited researchers, agricultural professionals, and farmers to use and expand PAR monitoring in agricultural lands. Thus, this paper focuses on designing an affordable Internet of Things (IoT)-based PAR sensor monitoring system including 3D-printed enclosures (waterproof) for the sensors, performance evaluation of multiple light sensors, solar powering configuration, cloud setup, and cost analysis. Three sensors, including VTB8440BH photodiode, SI 1145, and LI-190R sensors, were evaluated. The 3D-printed waterproof enclosures were designed for the photodiode and SI 1145. Particle Boron was used for recording and sending the sensor data to the IoT webserver. Both the photodiode and SI 1145 were compared to LI-190R, which is the industry standard. In the calibration process, the R2 values of the photodiode and SI 1145 with LI-190R were 0.609 and 0.961, respectively. Field validation data shows that SI 1145 had a strong correlation with LI-190R. In addition, the performance evaluation data shows the photodiode had a weaker correlation with LI-190R than SI 1145. In conclusion, the study successfully developed and designed affordable and reliable IoT-based PAR sensor monitoring systems, including a 3D-printed housing, hardware, programming, and IoT website. SI 1145 with a glass filter is an alternative sensor to monitor PAR at a low cost and has the advantage of being connected to IoT microcontrollers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar power occupies a significant position among global renewable energy sources due to its abundant energy potential. Consequently, its contribution to electricity generation is steadily increasing. However, obtaining peak efficiency from fixed solar photovoltaic (PV) panels is a formidable task due to their limited ability to consistently tap into solar energy. To tackle this issue and mitigate energy efficiency losses, the utilization of solar tracking systems has emerged as an exceptionally effective solution. These systems enable continuous adjustment of the panels' position to align with the sun's trajectory, optimizing energy absorption and enhancing overall performance. This paper presents the performance and cost analysis of three distinct solar panel tracking systems, namely, a fixed system, a single-axis system, and a dual-axis system. The systems are operated under identical coordinates and conditions. The production data are collected over a period of 15 days for comparative analysis. The tracking movements of the systems are controlled using Arduino. The mechanical components are specifically designed for the establishment of each system. The findings of this study indicate that both single-axis and dual-axis solar tracking systems outperformed fixed systems in terms of power generation. The single-axis system demonstrated a 24.367% increase in power production, while the dual-axis system showed a 32.247% increase compared to the fixed system. Moreover, a cost analysis was carried out considering the installation expenses and power production data of the three systems. It was determined that the single-axis tracking system achieved payback in 0.39 years less compared to the fixed system, while the dual-axis system achieved payback in 1.48 years less compared to the fixed system. Overall, this study underscores the advantages of implementing solar tracking systems, particularly in the single-axis and dual-axis configurations, as they contribute to higher power generation and cost-effectiveness compared to fixed systems. A bottom-up cost analysis for delivering utility-scale PV-generated electricity as hydrogen through pipelines and as electricity through power is undertaken. Techno-economic, generation, and demand data for California are used to calculate the levelized cost of transmitting (LCOT) energy and the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) prior to distribution. High-voltage levels of 230 kV and 500 kV and 24-inch and 36-inch pipelines for 100 to 700 miles of transmission are considered. At 100 miles of transmission, the cost of transmission between each medium is comparable. At longer distances, the pipeline scenarios become increasingly cheaper at low utilization levels. The all-electric pathways utilizing battery energy storage systems can meet 95% of the load for as low as 356 USD/MWh, whereas when meeting 100% of load with the hydrogen gas turbine and fuel cell pathways, the costs are 278 and 322 USD/MWh, respectively. Using renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels is one of the best solutions to overcome greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, in designing clean power generation microgrids, the economic aspects of using renewable energy technologies should be considered. Furthermore, due to the unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources, the reliability of renewable energy microgrids should also be evaluated. Optimized hybrid microgrids based on wind and solar energy can provide cost-effective power generation systems with high reliability. These microgrids can meet the power demands of the consuming units, especially in remote areas. Various techniques have been used to optimize the size of power generation systems based on renewable energy to improve efficiency, maintain reliability, improve the power grid's resilience, and reduce system costs. Each of these techniques has shown its advantages and disadvantages in optimizing the size of hybrid renewable energy systems. To increase the share of renewable energies in electricity supply in the future and develop these new technologies further, this paper reviews the latest and most efficient techniques used to optimize green microgrids from an economical and reliable perspective to achieve a clean, economical, and highly reliable microgrid. The reduction of electricity use for heating and domestic hot water in cold climates can be achieved by: (1) reducing the heating loads through the improvement of the thermal performance of house envelopes, and (2) using solar energy through a residential solar-based thermal storage system. First, this paper presents the life cycle energy and cost analysis of a typical one-storey detached house, located in Montreal, Canada. Simulation of annual energy use is performed using the TRNSYS software. Second, several design alternatives with improved thermal resistance for walls, ceiling and windows, increased overall air tightness, and increased window-to-wall ratio of South facing windows are evaluated with respect to the life cycle energy use, life cycle emissions and life cycle cost. The solution that minimizes the energy demand is chosen as a reference house for the study of long-term thermal storage. Third, the computer simulation of a solar heating system with solar thermal collectors and long-term thermal storage capacity is presented. Finally, the life cycle cost and life cycle energy use of the solar combisystem are estimated for flat-plate solar collectors and evacuated tube solar collectors, respectively, for the economic and climatic conditions of this study. The paper presents a long range data acquisition chain operating in areas without access to the electricity grid or communication infrastructure built with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It is assumed that the length of the network chain significantly exceeds the flight range of a single drone. To build such a network three basic problems have to be solved. The first is energy harvesting for battery charging. The second concerns the choice of drone models that can cover a given distance in the shortest time. The third problem is the reduction of the flight range of drones as a function of payload mass. The evaluation of the proposed method is based on the results of simulations and cost analysis of 54 drones and 25 solar cells. In this study, a novel sizing methodology was developed for centralized and interconnected operating strategies of transactive microgrids and several variables were investigated including starting month, initial charge of battery, load variability, unit cost of solar panels and energy storage, number of systems, climate, and required reliability to determine their effect on total cost. The centralized strategy improved cost by seven to ten percent compared to the isolated strategy in every case. The interconnected strategy saved an incremental amount of money consistently compared to the isolated standard. The number of connected systems was not a strong effect. It was thought that increasing the number of systems would increase the benefit of energy sharing. Climate zones studied ("Cold"; "Hot-Dry/Mixed Dry"; "Mixed Humid"; and "Cold but with lower solar irradiation") showed a large variation on cost with the Hot-Dry/Mixed Dry being the least expensive and Cold, with lower solar irradiation being the most expensive. Cost sensitivity analysis was performed showing that the unit cost of solar has a greater effect on the total cost. This research paper aims to propose a through-life cost analysis model for estimating the profitability of renewable concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies. The financial outputs of the model include net present value (NPV) and benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of the project, internal rate of return (IRR) and discounted payback period (DPBP) of the investment, and levelized cost of energy (LCoE) from the CSP technology. The meteorological data for a specific location in the city of Tucson in Arizona is collected from a network of automated weather stations, and the NREL System Advisor Model (SAM) is applied to simulate hourly energy output of the CSP plant. An Excel spreadsheet tool is designed to calculate, in a bottom-up approach, the financial metrics required for approval of CSP projects. The model is tested on a 50 MW parabolic trough CSP plant and the results show an annual energy production of 456,351,232 kWh, NPV of over $64 million and LCoE of 0.16 $/kWh. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the factors which have the most significant effect on the economic performance of CSP technologies. Solar thermal power is nowadays one of the trendiest topics in the construction industry, and it represents a valuable energy source of heating that reduces energy consumption. As solar panels produce heating during the day and consumers demand calefaction during the whole day, we use standby tanks (for domestic hot water) and buffer tanks (for heating) for storage. The latest developments improved the efficiency and useful life while reducing the volume of tanks. So, the presented research work deals with analyzing the solar thermal power in a family house. This work presents a method to create a decision support system to compare solar energy systems in houses from economical, technical, availability, and environmental concerns. The weights of the criteria selected considering the analytical hierarchy process are computed. Parameters required for energy production calculations (location, temperature, etc.) and energy consumption (inhabitants, outdoor temperature, etc.) are summarized. It can be stated that a universal best solar thermal scheme does not exist, as energy consumption depends on the other features and limits as well as energy production, geographical latitude of the location, and so forth. According to results, Case 3 (a gas boiler and a combination tank) is the best alternative for reducing the energy required, CO2 emitted, the best energy efficiency of the installation, and the lowest transmission losses.
