With the development of the pressure vessel industry, high-energy wire welding has a great future. However, this means higher demands on the weldability of pressure vessel steels. Controlling inclusions via oxidative metallurgy is a reliable method of improving the weldability of pressure vessel steels. Hence, in this paper, experimental steels with different Mg element mass fractions were prepared using vacuum metallurgy. Simulated welding for high-heat input welding was carried out using the Gleeble-2000 welding thermal simulation test machine. The inclusions in the welding heat-affected zone (HAZ) in the experimental steels were observed using an optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The compositions of the inclusions were analyzed using an energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The research results indicated that the addition of Mg could increase the number density of the inclusions in the welding HAZ. With the addition of Mg from 0 to 5 wt.%, the total number density of the inclusions increased from 133 to 687 pieces/mm2, and the number density of the inclusions with a size of 0–5 μm2 increased from 122 to 579 pieces/mm2. The inclusions in the experimental steel welding HAZ with Mg elements were mainly elliptical composite inclusions composed of (Mg-Zr-O) + MnS. Moreover, MnS precipitated on the surface of the Mg-containing inclusions in the welding HAZ. Intragranular acicular ferrite (IAF) nucleation was primarily induced via the minimum lattice mismatch mechanism, supplemented with stress-strain energy and inert interface energy mechanisms. Pressure vessel steels are used in the manufacture of tanks for the storage of gases, chemical materials and oil. To meet the increasing production demands, high-wire-energy welding is widely used in the manufacture of pressure vessel steels. This means that the weldability of pressure vessel steels needs to be improved. Therefore, in order to reveal the microalloying effect of Ca in pressure vessel steel, this study took a commonly used pressure vessel steel as the research object, and three groups of experimental steels with different Ca mass fractions were prepared using vacuum metallurgy, controlled rolling and controlled cooling. Welding heat simulation technology was used to simulate the welding heat of experimental steel and the welding heat-affected zone (HAZ) was investigated. The inclusions of the welding HAZ in the experimental steels were observed by using a metallographic microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The mechanism of intragranular acicular ferrite (IAF) nucleation induced by the inclusions containing Ca elements in the welding HAZ of pressure vessel steels was also discussed. The research results show that the addition of Ca increased the number density of effective inclusions in the welding HAZ of the experimental steel up to 535.60 pieces/mm2. The addition of the Ca element was beneficial for producing more pinning inclusions in the experimental steel welding HAZ under the experimental conditions, and the inclusions were mainly elliptical oxide complex inclusions of Ca-Si with a size of about 2 μm. Meanwhile, Al2O3 and MnS were precipitated. After the addition of Ca elements, Mn-poor regions appeared around the inclusions containing Ca in the welding HAZ. IAF nucleation was mainly induced by the local compositional change mechanism and supplemented by the stress–strain energy mechanism and inert interface energy mechanism. This study provides a valuable reference for optimizing the welding process of pressure vessel steels and is of great importance for understanding the IAF nucleation mechanism of Ca-containing inclusions in the welding HAZ of pressure vessel steels. Carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is one of the essential approaches to achieving permanent CO2 emission reduction. A new idea of absorbing and mineralizing CO2 with industrial wastewater and converting activated calcium into micron CaCO3 powder is proposed in this paper, which synchronizes water softening and CO2 fixation. Therefore, this paper investigated the characteristics of circulating water quality in the iron and steel industry and the transformation behaviors of CO2 capture by activated calcium to CaCO3 powder in the mild aqueous environment under different process parameters. The phase composition, morphology, and particle size distribution (PSD) of CaCO3 powder were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and (laser particle size analyzer) LPSA, respectively. In addition, a green integrated cycle system for industrial water capture of mineralized CO2 was preliminarily constructed, which provides a reference method for carbon reduction and economic utilization of carbon sources in an industrial system. Red mud desulfurization is an environmentally friendly desulfurization technology. After desulfurization, the acidity of red mud slurry continues to be neutralized for processing new red mud, and no waste acid is generated. At present, there is a lack of research on desulfurization intensification in external fields, etc. To further enhance red mud desulfurization, this paper used an SO2 detector, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to compare and analyze red mud desulfurization under the action of ball mill and ultrasonic external fields. In this study, experiments were conducted using a bubbling and stirring reactor device. The results showed that the suitable red mud slurry concentration was 10 g/L. The raw red mud desulfurization (without external field condition) could reach 100% absorption in the first 25 min, and the desulfurization rate dropped to 81.3% at 80 min. The mechanism of red mud desulfurization was investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), XRF, and infrared spectroscopy. Under the action of the external field of the ball mill, the red mud particles could be refined to prolong the desulfurization time. The red mud after ball milling could reach 100% absorption within 33 min. Under the thermal effect of the ultrasound, 100% absorption could only be achieved within 23 min. From the desulfurization effect and XRF results, it was found that the ball mill was more suitable for promoting red mud desulfurization in the bubbling and stirring reactor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although polyurea has attracted extensive attention in impact mitigation due to its protective characteristics during intensive loading, the ballistic performance of polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor remains unclear. In the present study, polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor with different structures was designed, including three types of coating positions of the polyurea. The ballistic tests were conducted with a ballistic gun; the samples were subjected to a tungsten projectile formed into a cylinder 8 mm in diameter and 30 mm in length, and the deformation process of the tested targets was recorded with a high-speed camera. The ballistic performance of the polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor was evaluated according to mass efficiency. The damaged targets were investigated in order to determine the failure patterns and the mechanisms of interaction between the projectile and the target. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the microstructure of polyurea and to understand its failure mechanisms. The results showed that the mass efficiency of the polyurea-coated armor was 89% higher than that of ceramic/metal armor, which implies that polyurea-coated ceramic armor achieved higher ballistic performance with lighter mass quality than that of ceramic/metal armor. The improvement of ballistic performance was due to the energy absorbed by polyurea during glass transition. In this study, we employed electrospinning technology and in situ polymerization to prepare wearable and highly sensitive PVP/PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 micro/nanofiber gas sensors. PEDOT, PEDOT:PSS, and TiO2 were prepared via in situ polymerization and tested for characteristic peaks using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), then characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a four-point probe resistance measurement, and a gas sensor test system. The gas sensitivity was 3.46–12.06% when ethanol with a concentration between 12.5 ppm and 6250 ppm was measured; 625 ppm of ethanol was used in the gas sensitivity measurements for the PEDOT/composite conductive woven fabrics, PVP/PEDOT:PSS nanofiber membranes, and PVP/PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 micro/nanofiber gas sensors. The latter exhibited the highest gas sensitivity, which was 5.52% and 2.35% greater than that of the PEDOT/composite conductive woven fabrics and PVP/PEDOT:PSS nanofiber membranes, respectively. In addition, the influence of relative humidity on the performance of the PVP/PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 micro/nanofiber gas sensors was examined. The electrical sensitivity decreased with a decrease in ethanol concentration. The gas sensitivity exhibited a linear relationship with relative humidity lower than 75%; however, when the relative humidity was higher than 75%, the gas sensitivity showed a highly non-linear correlation. The test results indicated that the PVP/PEDOT:PSS/TiO2 micro/nanofiber gas sensors were flexible and highly sensitive to gas, qualifying them for use as a wearable gas sensor platform at room temperature. As a pre-treatment process in the pre-passivation of stainless steel, pickling treatment has a significant effect on the formation of the pre-passivation film. Thus, the surface composition and defects of Super 13Cr martensitic stainless steel (Super 13Cr) were evaluated under different pickling parameters to further improve the corrosion resistance of the pre-passivation film. The samples were prepared using the acid immersion method and by changing the immersion duration and the acid concentration. The inclusion and chemical composition on the Super 13Cr surface were characterized via a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The pickling treatment contributes little to the morphology, dimension, and other characteristic parameters of the inclusions. With the increasing duration and acidification concentration, the Cr content on the surface of Super 13Cr increases initially and then decreases. By contrast, the Fe content decreases initially and then increases. The pickling parameters corresponding to the lowest Fe content and the highest Cr content are identical, i.e., the exposure duration is 50 s and the acid concentration is 48 g/L. The pickling treatment in this case could be divided into two stages: outer film dissolution and inner film dissolution. The pickling parameters basically contribute little to the defects of martensitic stainless steel but can significantly affect the surface Cr and Fe content. Retaining the Cr-enriched inner layer could improve the content of Cr in the pre-passivation film and then improve the corrosion resistance of the film. Thus, compared with the original sample with native film, the corrosion resistance of the sample with a Cr-enriched inner layer improved by a factor of about 40. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the corrosion performance of a laser cladding Fe-based alloy coating on the surface of 27SiMn steel was studied. The Fe-based alloy coating was prepared on a 27SiMn steel surface by high-speed laser cladding. The microstructure, morphological characteristics, element content, and phase composition of the cladding layer were analyzed by an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), respectively. The corrosion resistance of the 27SiMn substrate and Fe-based coating in different corrosive environments was tested through an electrochemical experimental station, a salt spray corrosion test box, and an immersion experiment. The Fe-based alloy cladding layer is mainly composed of a-Fe, M7C3, M2B, and Cr3Si. The cladding layer structure forms planar, cellular, dendrite, and equiaxed dendrite during rapid solidification. The corrosion potential of the cladding layer is higher than that of the substrate, and the arc radius of the cladding layer is larger than that of the substrate. After salt spray corrosion, a large number of red and black corrosion products appeared on the surface of the substrate; the surface of the cladding layer sample was still smooth, and the morphology was almost unchanged. The weight loss results of the cladding layer and 27SiMn matrix after 120 h of immersion are 0.0688 and 0.0993 g·cm−2, respectively. The weight loss of the cladding layer is 30.7% less than that of the matrix. Conclusion: Laser cladding an Fe-based alloy coating on the surface of 27SiMn has better corrosion resistance than the substrate, which improves the corrosion resistance of hydraulic supports. Simple Summary: To better understand how thrips detect and receive semiochemicals for intra- and interspecific communication, host selection, and mating, scanning electron microscopy was used to examine and compare the external morphology, distribution, and ultrastructure of the antennal sensilla in three alfalfa-feeding thrip species, Odontothrips loti, Megalurothrips distalis, and Sericothrips kaszabi. Nine major types of antennal sensilla were identified with similar morphology and distribution pattern among these thrip species. However, differences in the length and number of antennal sensilla were also found between male and female individuals and between species. Therefore, this study expands the understanding on the morphology of antennal sensilla in Thysanoptera (especially the suborder Terebrantia) and lays a morphological foundation for exploring the olfactory mechanism in thrips. Thrips are important pests to alfalfa Medicago sativa. Similar as many other plant-feeding insects, thrips rely on the antennae to receive chemical signals in the environment to locate their hosts. Previous studies indicated that sensilla of different shapes on the surface of insect antenna play an important role in signal recognition. However, morphological analysis of the antennal sensilla in Thysanoptera has been limited to only a few species. To expand the understanding of how antennal sensilla are related to semiochemical detection in thrips, here we compared the morphology and distribution of antennal sensilla in three thrip species, Odontothrips loti, Megalurothrips distalis, and Sericothrips kaszabi, by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The antennae of these three species are all composed of eight segments and share similar types of sensilla which distribute similarly in each segment, despite that their numbers show sexual dimorphism. Specifically, nine major types of sensilla in total were found, including three types of sensilla basiconica (SBI, SBII, and SBIII), two types of sensilla chaetica (SChI and SChII), and one type for each of sensilla coeloconica (SCo), sensilla trichodea (ST), sensilla campaniformia (SCa), and sensilla cavity (SCav). The potential functions of sensilla were discussed according to the previous research results and will lay a morphological foundation for the study of the olfactory mechanism of three species of thrips. The influence of rare earth Ce on the deep stamping property of high-strength interstitial-free (IF) steel containing phosphorus was analyzed. After adding 120 kg ferrocerium alloy (Ce content is 10%) in the steel, the inclusion statistics and the two-dimensional morphology of the samples in the direction of 1/4 thickness of slab and each rolling process were observed and compared by scanning electron microscope (SEM). After the samples in each rolling process were treated by acid leaching, the three-dimensional morphology and components of the second phase precipitates were observed by SEM and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The microstructure of the sample was observed by optical microscope, and the grain size was compared. Meanwhile, the content and strength of the favorable texture were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Finally, the mechanical properties of the product were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) The combination of rare earth Ce with activity O and S in steel had lower Gibbs free energy, and it was easy to generate CeAlO3, Ce2O2S, and Ce2O3. The inclusions size was obviously reduced, but the number of inclusions was increased after adding rare earth. The morphology of inclusions changed from chain and strip to spherical. The size of rare earth inclusions was mostly about 2–5 μm, distributed and dispersed, and their elastic modulus was close to that of steel matrix, which was conducive to improving the structure continuity of steel. (2) The rare earth compound had a high melting point. As a heterogeneous nucleation point, the nucleation rate was increased and the solidification structure was refined. The grade of grain size of products was increased by 1.5 grades, which is helpful to improve the strength and plasticity of metal. (3) Rare earth Ce can inhibit the segregation of P element at the grain boundary and the precipitation of Fe(Nb+Ti)P phase. It can effectively increase the solid solution amount of P element in steel, improve the solid solution strengthening effect of P element in high-strength IF steel, and obtain a large proportion of {111} favorable texture, which is conducive to improving the stamping formability index r90 value.
