The India-France SARAL/AltiKa mission is the first Ka-band altimetric mission dedicated primarily to oceanography. The mission objectives were firstly the observation of the oceanic mesoscales but also global and regional sea level monitoring, including the coastal zone, data assimilation, and operational oceanography. SARAL/AltiKa proved also to be a great opportunity for inland waters applications, for observing ice sheet or icebergs, as well as for geodetic investigations. The mission ended its nominal phase after three years in orbit and began a new phase (drifting orbit) in July 2016. The objective of this paper is to highlight some of the most remarkable achievements of the SARAL/AltiKa mission in terms of scientific applications. Compared to the standard Ku-band altimetry measurements, the Ka-band provides substantial improvements in terms of spatial resolution and data accuracy. We show here that this leads to remarkable advances in terms of observation of the mesoscale and coastal ocean, waves, river water levels, ice sheets, icebergs, fine scale bathymetry features as well as for the many related applications. Due to rapid global warming, the relationship between the mass loss of the Antarctic ice sheet and rising sea levels are attracting widespread attention. The Lambert–Amery glacial system is the largest drainage system in East Antarctica, and its mass balance has an important influence on the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet. In this paper, the recent ice flux in the Lambert Glacier of the Lambert–Amery system was systematically analyzed based on recently updated remote sensing data. According to Landsat-8 ice velocity data from 2018 to April 2019 and the updated Bedmachine v2 ice thickness dataset in 2021, the contribution of ice flux approximately 140 km downstream from Dome A in the Lambert Glacier area to downstream from the glacier is 8.5 ± 1.9   Gt · a − 1 , and the ice flux in the middle of the convergence region is 18.9 ± 2.9   Gt · a − 1 . The ice mass input into the Amery ice shelf through the grounding line of the whole glacier is 19.9 ± 1.3   Gt · a − 1 . The ice flux output from the mainstream area of the grounding line is 19.3 ± 1.0   Gt · a − 1 . Using the annual SMB data of the regional atmospheric climate model (RACMO v2.3) as the quality input, the mass balance of the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Lambert Glacier was analyzed. The results show that recent positive accumulation appears in the middle region of the glacier (about 74–78°S, 67–85°E) and the net accumulation of the whole glacier is 2.4 ± 3.5   Gt · a − 1 . Although the mass balance of the Lambert Glacier continues to show a positive accumulation, and the positive value in the region is decreasing compared with values obtained in early 2000. The Larsen C Ice Shelf (LCIS) is the largest ice shelf in the Antarctica Peninsula, and its state can be considered to be an indicator of local climate change. The goal of this paper is to invert the rigidity of the LCIS based on the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique using Sentinel-1 images. A targeted processing chain is first used to obtain reliable interferometric phase measurements under the circumstance of rapid ice flow. Unfortunately, only the descending data are available, which disallows the corresponding 2-D velocity field to be directly obtained from such measurements. A new approach is thus proposed to estimate the interferometric phase-based 2-D velocity field with the assistance of speckle tracking offsets. This approach establishes an implicit relationship between range and azimuth displacements based on speckle tracking observations. By taking advantage of such a relationship, the equivalent interferometric signals in the azimuth direction are estimated, thereby recovering the interferometric phase-based 2-D ice velocity field of the LCIS. To further investigate the state of the LCIS, the recovered 2-D velocity field is utilized to invert the ice rigidity. The shallow-shelf approximation (SSA) is the core of the reverse model, which is closely dependent on boundary conditions, including kinematic and dynamic conditions. The experimental results demonstrate that the spatial distribution of the rigidity varies approximately from 70 MPa·s 1 / 3 to 300 MPa·s 1 / 3 . Forced ice-shelf oscillations modeling was undertaken employing a full 3D finite-difference model of an elastic ice shelf that was coupled to a treatment of under-shelf seawater flux. The seawater flux was described by the wave equation, which includes the pressure excitements in the shallow water layer under the ice shelf. Thus, ice-shelf flexure was produced by hydrostatic pressure oscillations in the below-shelf seawater. Numerical calculations were performed for an idealized rectangular crevasse-ridden ice-shelf geometry. The crevasses were modeled as rectangular notches into the ice shelf. In the numerical experiments, the ice-plate flexures were forced by harmonic-entering pressure oscillations having a range of periodicities 5–250 s. The dispersion spectra derived for a crevasse-ridden ice shelf revealed "band gaps"—frequency ranges where no eigenmodes exist. The results further showed that the impact of ocean waves on the ice plate is abated from the point of view of a decrease in the spectral average amplitude in the vicinity of the spectrum where the "band gaps" are observed. High sea ice production (SIP) generates high-salinity water, thus, influencing the global thermohaline circulation. Estimation from passive microwave data and heat flux models have indicated that the Ross Ice Shelf polynya (RISP) may be the highest SIP region in the Southern Oceans. However, the coarse spatial resolution of passive microwave data limited the accuracy of these estimates. The Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar dataset with high spatial and temporal resolution provides an unprecedented opportunity to more accurately distinguish both polynya area/extent and occurrence. In this study, the SIPs of RISP and McMurdo Sound polynya (MSP) from 1 March–30 November 2017 and 2018 are calculated based on Sentinel-1 SAR data (for area/extent) and AMSR2 data (for ice thickness). The results show that the wind-driven polynyas in these two years occurred from the middle of March to the middle of November, and the occurrence frequency in 2017 was 90, less than 114 in 2018. However, the annual mean cumulative SIP area and volume in 2017 were similar to (or slightly larger than) those in 2018. The average annual cumulative polynya area and ice volume of these two years were 1,040,213 km2 and 184 km3 for the RSIP, and 90,505 km2 and 16 km3 for the MSP, respectively. This annual cumulative SIP (volume) is only 1/3–2/3 of those obtained using the previous methods, implying that ice production in the Ross Sea might have been significantly overestimated in the past and deserves further investigations. Following the large-scale disintegration of the Larsen B Ice Shelf (LBIS) in 2002, ice flow velocities for its remnants and tributary glaciers began to increase. In this study, we used sequential Landsat images spanning 2005–2018 to produce detailed maps of the ice flow velocities and surface features for the Scar Inlet Ice Shelf (SIIS). Our results indicate that the ice flow velocities for the SIIS and its tributary glaciers (Flask and Leppard Glaciers) have substantially increased since 2005. Surface features, such as rifts and crevasses, have also substantially increased in both scope and scale and are particularly evident in the region between the Leppard Glacier and the Jason Peninsula. Several indicators—including the acceleration of ice flows, the rapid growth of major surface rifts, the heavily enhanced surface crevasses, and the dynamic position of the ice front—point to the evolving instability of the SIIS. These same indicators describe the conditions for the LBIS leading up to its 2002 collapse. To date, however, the SIIS remains intact. The formation of fast ice supporting the ice shelf front, combined with moderate mean summer temperatures, may be preventing or delaying its collapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
