In our investigation, we subjected eleven reinforced concrete beams to a four-point bending system to explore the impact of varying fibre and ferrocement contents on their structural behaviour. These beams, measuring 1.7 m in length, featured a rectangular cross-section with dimensions of 150 mm by 300 mm. Our study focused on three key variables: steel fibre content (at levels of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%), glass fibre content (also at 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%), and ferrocement content (evaluated with one or two layers of welded or expanded wire mesh). Our findings revealed that incorporating fibres with minimal shear reinforcement significantly enhanced the beams' performance. Specifically: The specimen reinforced with 1.5% steel fibres exhibited the highest ultimate failure load, surpassing the control beam by an impressive 41.87%. The 0.5% glass fibre specimen experienced the least deflection at the ultimate load compared to the control beam. The 1.5% glass fibre specimen demonstrated superior energy absorption compared to the control specimen. Notably, using two layers of welded wire mesh proved most effective in enhancing the ultimate failure load when compared to both the control specimen and other ferrocement-strengthened beams. It is vital to maximize the safety of outdoor constructions, airplanes, and space vehicles by protecting against the impact of airborne debris from increasing winds due to climate change, or from bird strikes or micrometeoroids. In a widely-used compression-molded short glass fiber polyester bulk-molded compound (SGFRP-BMC) with 55% wt. CaCO3 filler, the center of the mother panel has lower impact strength than the outer sections with solidification texture angles and short glass fiber (SGF) orientations being random from 0 to 90 degrees. Therefore, a new double-step process of: (1) reducing commercial fiber length without change in molding equipment; followed by a (2) 0.86 MGy dose of homogeneous low-voltage electron beam irradiation (HLEBI) to both sides of the finished samples requiring no chemicals or additives, which is shown to increase the Charpy impact value (auc) about 50% from 6.26 to 9.59 kJm−2 at median-accumulative probability of fracture, Pf = 0.500. Shortening the SGFs results in higher fiber spacing density, Sf, as the thermal compressive stress site proliferation by action of the CTE difference between the matrix and SGF while the composite cools and shrinks. To boost impact strength further, HLEBI provides additional nano-compressive stresses by generating dangling bonds (DBs) creating repulsive forces while increasing SGF/matrix adhesion. The use of an open-graded friction course (OGFC) as a road surface demonstrates significant advantages in reducing driving noise and improving road drainage and safety. This study aims to enhance the overall performance of OGFC-13 by incorporating double-adding fiber technology. Laboratory tests were conducted on six OGFC-13 mixes modified with varying fiber ratios of lignin fibers (LFs) and glass fibers (GFs). Both GF and LF significantly improved high-temperature performance, with dynamic stability values increasing proportionally to GF content. The LF:GF = 0.15:0.15 ratio achieved peak shearing strength, demonstrating better improvement over single-fiber modification. Furthermore, both fibers effectively enhanced resistance to cracking, with GF-reinforced specimens excelling in bending stress and LF-reinforced specimens demonstrating the highest flexural strain. Water stability evaluations highlighted the substantial positive impact of LF and GF, with simultaneous addition resulting in superior moisture stability compared to single-fiber modifications. Anti-stripping performance assessments indicated that the LF:GF = 3:0 ratio exhibited the best performance. In fatigue performance, both LF and GF enhanced fatigue life, with GF outperforming LF. The LF:GF = 0.15:0.15 ratio achieved a balanced fatigue performance. Results from the radar evaluation method underscored a more comprehensive improvement in road performance achieved through double-adding technology. Optimizing the mechanical characteristics of cemented tailings backfill (CTB) and quickly identifying its damage state under external loading, this study compares and prepares CTB specimens without fiber, doped with polypropylene fiber (PF), doped with glass fiber (BL), and doped with polypropylene and glass blended fiber (PB). Uniaxial compression and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring experiments are also conducted. Based on the cumulative energy of AE, the damage ontology model of CTB was developed. As shown by the study's findings, adding various fibers can greatly enhance the filler body's uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). BL has the greatest effect, followed by PB, while PFs have the least effect. Furthermore, the fibers primarily prevent the growth of crack extension by extending or breaking themselves, The results of the tests on acoustic emission revealed that the fiberless filler's signals were more active prior to the peak point and less intense in the later stages of the damage, whereas the fiber-doped filler's signals began to increase following the peak point and remained high. Thus, the damage model curves of various fiber-filled bodies are constructed based on the cumulative energy of acoustic emission, and the experimental data verification shows that the two have good consistency, suggesting that the established theoretical model can serve as a basis of reference for assessing the filled bodies' damage state. A significant change in the refractive index profiles for the large mode area phosphoroaluminosilicate (PAS) core optical fibers was observed in comparison to that in preforms. This study shows that the refractive index of the PAS core can vary from negative (in preform) to positive (in fiber), and the difference in the refractive index between the core and preform can exceed a few thousand. By measuring a large set of fibers with different concentrations of P2O5 and Al2O3, we define the refractivity of each dopant (P2O5, Al2O3 and AlPO4 joint) after drawing fiber from the preform and discuss the possible origin of the observed refractive index variation. M-type optical fibers in which a core is surrounded by a thin ring layer with a higher refractive index have attracted increasing attention in recent years. One of their advantageous features is the ability to operate a non-fundamental LP02 mode possessing unusual dispersion properties, namely, a zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) shifted to the short wavelength region relative to the material ZDW. The LP02 mode can be selectively excited since it is predominantly localized near the core, while the fundamental LP01 and other higher modes are localized near the ring (for proper fiber parameters). In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of effective dispersion tailoring for the HE12 mode of highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass fibers (for which the LP mode approximation fails due to large refractive index contrasts). We demonstrate fiber designs for which ZDWs can be shifted to the spectral region < 2 μm, which is of great interest for the development of mid-IR supercontinuum sources and frequency-tunable pulse sources with standard near-IR pumping. We obtained the characteristic equation and solved it numerically to find mode fields and dispersion characteristics. We show the possibility of achieving dispersion characteristics of the HE12 mode with one, two, three, and four ZDWs in the wavelength range of 1.5–5.5 μm. We used a modified genetic algorithm (MGA) to design fibers with desired dispersion parameters. In particular, by applying an MGA, we optimized four fiber parameters and constructed a fiber for which HE12 mode dispersion is anomalous in the 1.735–5.155 μm range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of fibres applied to concrete in order to improve its properties is widely known. Nowadays, research is not only focused on improving mechanical properties but also on the environmental implications. The aim of this research was a mechanical and environmental comparison between different types of fibres. For this purpose, commercial fibres of three materials were used: low carbon steel, modified polyolefins, and glass fibre. In order to improve the sustainability of the sector, we also analysed and compared the performance of using a waste product, such as fibres from machining operations on lathes. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties, compression and flexural tests were carried out. The results show that the use of low carbon steel fibres increases the flexural strength by 4.8%. At the environmental level, and in particular for impact categories such as the Global Warming Potential (GWP), lathe waste fibres prove to be the most suitable. For instance, compared to glass fibres, CO2 emissions are reduced by 14.39%. This is equivalent to a total of 38 kg CO2 emissions per m3 of reinforced concrete. In addition to avoiding the consumption of 482 MJ/m3 of fossil fuels, the results of the research indicate the feasibility of using waste fibres as a substitute for commercial fibres, contributing to an improved environmental balance without losing mechanical performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the bearing capacity-settlement behavior of strip footing settling on sand soil randomly reinforced with glass fiber, basalt fiber, macromesh fiber, and four different hybrid fiber additives in which these fibers are used together. Model tests were carried out in the laboratory on the strip footing and placed on the unreinforced and reinforced sand with different fibers. In the study, model tests were carried out on seven types of randomly reinforced soils by using glass, basalt, macrame, and mixtures of these fibers as reinforcement. In the model tests, two different fiber contents, 1% and 2%, and two different fiber lengths, 24 mm and 48 mm, were used. Tests were carried out with Dr = 30% and 50% relative density, and reinforcement depths 1B, 2B, and 3B were selected. In addition, the photographs taken during the test were analyzed with the particle image velocimetry (PIV) method and the displacements on the soil were examined. As a result of the reinforced and unreinforced model tests, the highest ultimate bearing capacity was measured as 680 kPa from the tests with Dr = 50% relative density, 48 mm length, 2% contents, and 3B depth macromesh fiber reinforced. In hybrid fibers, the highest ultimate bearing capacity was measured as 495 kPa, with Dr = 50% relative density, 48 mm length, 2% contents, and 2D depth micromesh and basalt fiber-reinforced tests. In the reinforced tests, it was concluded that the most effective fiber on bearing capacity is macromesh fiber. It can be seen that in the PIV analysis, as the fiber additive increased, the settlements made by the foundation decreased under the same pressure. Objective: To measure the flexural strength (FS) of bulk-fill resin composites and assess their long-term water absorption and solubility properties with and without the inclusion of short glass fibres. Methods: One resin composite, everX Flow with fibres, and four commercially available bulk-fill composites without fibres, namely, PALFIQUE, Activa, SDR Plus, and Filtek Bulk Fill One, were tested. Six specimens (2 × 2 × 25 mm) were fabricated for each material and stored in water for 1 day and 30 days to measure the flexural strength using a three-point bending test. To evaluate water absorption and solubility, circular disks measuring 15 × 2 mm (n = 5) were immersed in water for 60 days, and their weights were recorded periodically. After 60 days, the specimens were dried for an additional 21 days to determine solubility. Results: Flexural strength values ranged from 101.7 to 149.1 MPa. Significant distinctions were observed among the resin composites at the onset of the study (p < 0.05). The highest FS value was identified in everX Flow, while ACT exhibited the lowest (p < 0.05). However, the flexural strength values exhibited a significant decrease with increased storage time (p < 0.05), except for ACT, which demonstrated a noteworthy increase. Concerning water absorption and solubility, ACT displayed the highest absorption, while the range of solubility varied from −0.88 to 5.8 μg/mm3. ACT also had the highest solubility, whereas everX Flow exhibited negative solubility. Significance: The addition of short fibres, along with potential differences in matrix composition, enhanced the flexural strength of everX Flow. However, the substantial reduction in flexural strength observed in everX Flow and SDR following exposure to water corroborates the manufacturers' recommendation to apply a conventional resin composite cap on these materials. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has been the most-widely used denture base material in prosthetic dentistry for the last 80 years. It is still one of the best alternatives when new methods are inapplicable. Due to the lack of some physical inadequacies occurring during cyclic use and accidental situations, various reinforcement strategies such as using nanoparticles, wires, fibers, and meshes have been investigated and reported. In this study, it was aimed to conduct a comparative investigation of the effect of fiber additives with different characteristics on the flexural properties of heat-cured PMMA denture base resins. Glass fibers (GFs), polypropylene fibers (PPFs), and carbon fibers (CFs) having 3, 6, and 12 mm lengths and 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0% concentrations (v/v) were used for the reinforcement of PMMA denture base resins. The flexural properties (flexural strength, flexural modulus, and maximum deformation) were determined using a three-point bending test, and three-way ANOVA analyses with Bonferroni corrections were performed on the test results. The morphologies of the fracture surfaces were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. All three fibers exhibited reinforcement in the flexural strength (p < 0.001) and flexural modulus (p < 0.001) regardless of their length and concentration. The group with 1.0% 12 mm CF-reinforced PMMA exhibited the greatest flexural strength (94.8 ± 8.8 MPa), and that with 1.0% 3 mm GFs displayed the lowest flexural strength (66.9 ± 10.4 MPa) among the fiber-reinforced groups. The greatest value of the flexural modulus was displayed by the 1.0% 3 mm CF-reinforced resin (3288.3 ± 402.1 MPa). Although the CF-reinforced groups exhibited better flexural properties, CFs are not favorable for use as reinforcement in practice due to the dark gray discoloration of the denture base resin. Comprehending the degradation of glass fibers is crucial for service applications involving dry and wet conditions, especially when prolonged contact with water above room temperature is present. Depending on the polymer material, both thermosetting and thermoplastic matrices can permit the ingress of moisture. Therefore, fiber reinforcements embedded in the polymer matrix may experience moisture exposure. Additionally, some structural applications use fiber devoid of any matrix (dry fibers), in which water exposure must be avoided. In all of these cases, moisture may, therefore, have a significant impact on the reinforcing elements and the rate of degradation. The present work focuses on the effects of hydrothermal aging on the mechanical durability of long E-glass fibers by immersion in water at 60 °C, 71 °C, and 82 °C. A service life forecast model was created utilizing the Arrhenius technique, and a master curve of strength variation with exposure time was created for E-glass fibers at 60 °C. Using this modeling approach, it is possible to approximate the amount of time it will take to attain a given degradation level over a specified range of temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate morphological changes in fiber surfaces due to hydrothermal exposure, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass dissolution studies were used to elucidate the mechanism of the strength loss. This experimental study investigated how defects, in particular fiber misalignment, affect the mechanical behavior of glass fiber composites (GFRP) under compressive loading. GFRP cross-plies with three different types of fiber misalignment, namely a fold, a wave, and an in-plane undulation, were fabricated using the resin transfer molding process. The compressive tests were performed at four different temperatures, in order to investigate the role of a change in the matrix properties on the strength of the composite. The experiments showed that the defects, especially at lower temperatures, had a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the composite, exceeding the proportion of the defects inside the composite. With increasing temperature, the damage mechanism changed from fiber-dominated to matrix-dominated and, in doing so, decreased the significance of fiber misalignment for the mechanical behavior. The building sector is facing the challenge of transitioning to a more industrialized construction approach and is thus promoting the development of new materials that enable the production of lighter prefabricated products with enhanced thermal performance. This study conducts the physicochemical and mechanical characterization of a new plaster material intended for application in the building sector. The plaster material developed contains potassium polyacrylate and perlite in its composition and has been reinforced with wood, glass and polypropylene fibers to improve its physical and mechanical properties. The results demonstrate that the combined incorporation of potassium polyacrylate and expanded perlite leads to a decrease in density and thermal conductivity by 10.5% and 47%, respectively, compared to traditional plasters. In addition, the incorporation of reinforcement fibers in the plaster matrix, particularly glass fiber, improves the mechanical strength of the new material. The plaster composite developed for this research offers lightweight characteristics and improves the energy efficiency of the construction systems into which it can be integrated and is designed for use in prefabricated panels and plates especially. Infrared evanescent wave sensing based on chalcogenide fiber is an emerging technology for qualitative and quantitative analysis of most organic compounds. Here, a tapered fiber sensor made from Ge10As30Se40Te20 glass fiber was reported. The fundamental modes and intensity of evanescent waves in fibers with different diameters were simulated with COMSOL. The 30 mm length tapered fiber sensors with different waist diameters, 110, 63, and 31 μm, were fabricated for ethanol detection. The sensor with a waist diameter of 31 μm has the highest sensitivity of 0.73 a.u./% and a limit of detection (LoD) of 0.195 vol.% for ethanol. Finally, this sensor has been used to analyze alcohols, including Chinese baijiu (Chinese distilled spirits), red wine, Shaoxing wine (Chinese rice wine), Rio cocktail, and Tsingtao beer. It is shown that the ethanol concentration is consistent with the nominal alcoholicity. Moreover, other components such as CO2 and maltose can be detected in Tsingtao beer, demonstrating the feasibility of its application in detecting food additives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The complete flax stem, which contains shives and technical fibres, has the potential to reduce the cost, energy consumption and environmental impacts of the composite production process if used directly as reinforcement in a polymer matrix. Earlier studies have utilised flax stem as reinforcement in non-bio-based and non-biodegradable matrices not completely exploiting the bio-sourced and biodegradable nature of flax. We investigated the potential of using flax stem as reinforcement in a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix to produce a lightweight, fully bio-based composite with improved mechanical properties. Furthermore, we developed a mathematical approach to predict the material stiffness of the full composite part produced by the injection moulding process, considering a three-phase micromechanical model, where the effects of local orientations are accounted. Injection moulded plates with a flax content of up to 20 V% were fabricated to study the effect of flax shives and full straw flax on the mechanical properties of the material. A 62% increase in longitudinal stiffness was obtained, resulting in a 10% higher specific stiffness, compared to a short glass fibre-reinforced reference composite. Moreover, the anisotropy ratio of the flax-reinforced composite was 21% lower, compared to the short glass fibre material. This lower anisotropy ratio is attributed to the presence of the flax shives. Considering the fibre orientation in the injection moulded plates predicted with Moldflow simulations, a high agreement between experimental and predicted stiffness data was obtained. The use of flax stems as polymer reinforcement provides an alternative to the use of short technical fibres that require intensive extraction and purification steps and are known to be cumbersome to feed to the compounder. Given the time-consuming and complex nature associated with the aging of composites, a novel fabric pre-aging method was developed and evaluated for static and fatigue testing. It allows for investigating sizing and interphase-related aging effects. This fast method is independent of the diffusion processes and the composites' thickness. Moreover, the new methodology offers enhanced analysis of the sizing, interphase, and fiber-related degradation of composites without aging them by conventional accelerated procedures or under severe maritime environments. For validation purposes, fiber bundle, longitudinal, and transverse tensile tests were performed with five different glass fiber inputs. Significant differences in the durability of composites were found for pre-aging and classical aging, respectively. The impacts of degradation of the single constituents on the fatigue life are identified by cyclic testing of untreated, pre-aged, and wet-aged composites. Here, it is evident that the interphase strength is likewise essential for the tension-tension fatigue performance of unidirectional composites, as is the fiber strength itself. In summary, the presented method provides industry and academia with an additional opportunity to examine the durability of different fibers, sizings, and composites for design purposes following a reasonable methodology. Cu-Se alloy core fibers with glass cladding were fabricated by a thermal drawing method of a reactive molten core. The composition, crystallography, and photoelectric/thermoelectric performance of the fiber cores were investigated. The X-ray diffraction spectra of the Cu-Se alloy core fibers illustrate the fiber cores being polycrystalline with CuSe and Cu3Se2 phases. Interestingly, the fiber cores show a lower electrical conductivity under laser irradiation than under darkness at room temperature. Meanwhile, the fiber cores possess a power factor of ~1.2 mWm−1K−2 at room temperature, which is approaching the value of the high thermoelectric performance bulk of Cu2Se polycrystals. The flexible Cu-Se fibers and their micro–nano tapers have potential multifunctional applications in the field of photoelectric detection and thermoelectric conversion on curved surfaces. This work investigates the effects of fibre content, fibre orientation, and frequency on the dynamic behaviour of flax fibre-reinforced polypropylene composites (FFPCs) to improve understanding of the parameters affecting vibration damping in FFPCs. The effects of fibre content and fibre orientation on the mechanical performances of FFPCs, along with fracture characteristics, are also investigated in this study. Laminates of various fibre contents and orientations were manufactured by a vacuum bagging process, and their dynamic and static properties were then obtained using dynamic (dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to frequencies of 100 Hz) and various mechanical (tensile and flexural) analyses, respectively. The findings suggest that of all the parameters, fibre orientation has the most significant impact on the damping, and the maximum loss factor (i.e., 4.3–5.5%) is obtained for 45° and 60° fibre orientations. However, there is no significant difference in loss factors among the composites with different fibre contents. The loss factors lie mainly in the range of 4–5.5%, irrespective of the fibre volume fraction, fibre orientation, and frequency. A significant improvement (281 to 953%) in damping is feasible in flax fibre/polypropylene composites relative to more widespread glass/epoxy composites. The mechanical properties of composites are also strongly affected by fibre orientation with respect to the loading direction; for example, the tensile modulus decreases from 20 GPa to 3.45 GPa at an off-axis angle of 30° for a fibre volume fraction of 0.40. The largest mechanical properties (tensile and flexural) are found in the case of 0° fibre orientation. For composites with fibre volume fractions in the range 0.31–0.50, tensile moduli are in the range 16–21 GPa, and tensile strengths are in the range 125–173 MPa, while flexural moduli and strengths are in the ranges 12–15 GPa and 96–121 MPa, respectively, making them suitable for structural applications. The obtained results also suggest that flax fibre composites are comparable to glass fibre composites, especially in terms of specific stiffness. The ESEM analysis confirms the tensile failures of specimens due to fibre debonding, fibre pull-out and breakage, matrix cracking, and inadequate fibre/matrix adhesion. The outcomes from this study indicate that flax fibre-reinforced composite could be a commercially viable material for applications in which noise and vibration are significant issues and where a significant amount of damping is required with a combination of high stiffness and low weight. High wear rates and frictional coefficients have always been the primary reasons for limiting the service life of critical elements such as pumps, couplings, bushings, bearings and gears. The premature and erratic failures are costing the industries extensive amounts of money every year. Additionally, under severe service conditions, the wear resistance requirements are higher, which greatly hinders the application of neat thermoplastics in different sectors. Hence, it is vital to enhance the tribological characteristics of thermoplastics. The mechanical and tribological properties of Polyamide 6, Thermoplastic Polyurethane, and glass fibre reinforced (GFR) Polyadmide 6 Composites of variable fibre volume fractions were investigated. Pin specimens of Polyamide 6 reinforced with (25%, 33%, and 50%) by volume of fibres were fabricated by an injection moulding process. The specimens were tested for tensile, compression, hardness, and wear under dry abrasive conditions using a pin-on-disc setup. Furthermore, the samples were scanned using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and the worn-out samples were analysed using field emission scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results showed that the fibre volume fraction was inversely proportional to the wear resistance of the prepared composite materials. This research will enable the industry partners to supply cutting-edge technologies to the global oil and gas industry that not only minimizes the well running cost but also improves the well resilience. In this work, basalt fibers (BF) have been investigated as possible natural and sustainable replacements for the common synthetic mineral filler—glass fibers (GF)—used in polyamide 66 matrix (PA66). Composites have been prepared at two different fiber concentrations (15 and 25 wt.%, respectively) by melt blending. The developed systems have been mainly characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), capillary rheology, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The kinetic parameters to thermal degradation through the Coats–Redfern method allowed us to attest a negligible effect of fiber type on thermal stability of the developed systems. Composites incorporating 15 wt.% of fiber content possessed the highest activation energy (≥230 kJ/mol). The introduction of BF and GF in PA 66 polymer, regardless of content, always led to an increase in crystallization and melting temperatures, and to a similar reduction in crystallinity degree and glass transition temperature. The shear viscosity of the basic polymer increased by the addition of fillers, particularly at low shear rate, with a pronounced effect in the case of basal fibers. A slightly higher shear thinning behavior of BF/PA66 with respect to GF/PA66 composites was confirmed by fitting the flow curves through the power law model. Finally, a worsening in fiber dispersion, by increasing the content in the matrix, and a weak compatibility between the two phases constituting the materials were highlighted through SEM micrographs. Given the excessive demolition of structures each year, the issues related to the generated structural waste are striking. Bricks being a major constituent in the construction industry, also hold a significant proportion of the construction waste generated annually. The reuse of this brick waste in new constructions is an optimal solution considering cost-effectiveness and sustainability. However, the problems related to the substandard peak stress and ultimate strain of concrete constructed with recycled brick aggregates (CRAs) limit its use in non-structural applications. The present study intends to improve the unsatisfactory mechanical characteristics of CRAs by utilizing low-cost glass fiber chopped strand mat (FCSM) sheets. The efficacy of FCSM sheets was assessed by wrapping them around CRA specimens constructed with different concrete strengths. A remarkable increase in the peak compressive stress and the ultimate strain of the CRA specimens were observed. For low, medium, and high strength CRAs, the ultimate strain improved by up to 320%, 308%, and 294%, respectively, as compared to the respective control specimens. Several existing analytical models were utilized to predict the peak compressive stress and ultimate strain of the CRAs strengthened using FCSM sheets. None of the considered models reproduced experimental results accurately. Therefore, equations were formulated using regression predicting the peak stress and ultimate strain of the CRAs confined with FCSM sheets. The growing demand for polymer composites and their widespread use is inevitably accompanied by the need to know their degradation behavior over a sufficiently long period of time. This study focuses on commercial glass fiber rovings, which were stored in the indoor environment for up to 11 years. Fibers with different storage times, from fresh up to the oldest, were used to produce unidirectional fiber-reinforced polyester composites that were characterized to determine their shear and flexural properties dependent on fiber storage time. A significant decrease in shear strength was observed throughout the aging of the fibers, down to a decrease of 33% for the oldest fibers. An important finding, however, was that the significant decrease in shear strength was only partially reflected in the flexural strength, which corresponded to a decrease of 18% for the oldest fibers at consistent flexural modulus. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a promising thermo-plastic polymer material due to its excellent mechanical properties. To further improve the mechanical properties of PEEK, different kinds of short fibers are added into the PEEK matrix. The grinding machinability of short-fiber-reinforced PEEK varies with the effect of fiber type and content. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the surface quality and removal mechanism of fiber-reinforced PEEK in ultra-precision grinding. In this paper, different fiber types and mass fractions of short-fiber-reinforced PEEK, including carbon-fiber-reinforced PEEK (CF/PEEK) and glass-fiber-reinforced PEEK (GF/PEEK), are employed. The grinding machinability of short-fiber-reinforced PEEK was investigated using grinding experiments with grinding wheels of different grit sizes. The effects of the fiber type and mass fraction on the surface quality and removal mechanism during grinding were discussed. The results showed that the brittle–ductile transition depth of carbon fiber was much larger than that of glass fiber, so it was easier to achieve ductile removal in grinding with the carbon fiber. Therefore, the ground surface roughness of CF/PEEK was smaller than that of GF/PEEK under the same grinding conditions. With the increase in carbon fiber mass fraction, the ground surface roughness of CF/PEEK decreased due to the higher hardness. The brittle–ductile transition depth of glass fiber was small, and it was easy to achieve brittle removal when grinding. Glass fibers (GF) and regenerated cellulose fibers (RCF) are possible partners in the hybrid reinforcement of thermoplastics because of their different properties. Due to the weak bonding properties of polypropylene, coupling agents are used and the fiber volume content is set high to achieve high reinforcing effects. A lower fiber content of GF can raise the toughness properties of a reinforced polypropylene which is investigated in this study with different ratios of GF and RCF. The composites are tested in tensile tests, flexural tests and also in notched Charpy impact tests. The results can be used to compare whether a substitution of GF with RCF or the addition of more GF leads to higher mechanical properties. The tensile and Charpy impact results are compared with the Rule of Hybrid Mixtures (RoHM) to show the deviation to the prediction. Better results in terms of stiffness and strength are seen with a higher total fiber volume, while hybrid reinforced specimens show lower toughness values compared to the RCF reinforced reference specimens. Ultrashort optical pulses play an important role in fundamental research and applications. It is important to have reliable information about pulse parameters such as duration, intensity profile, and phase. Numerous methods for characterizing pulses in the near-IR range have been well developed by now. However, there is a challenge with pulse measurement in the mid-IR, which is largely related to the underdeveloped component base in this spectral range. We investigate by means of numerical simulations a simple method of pulse reconstruction applicable in the mid-IR. The method is based on measuring and processing only the initial pulse spectrum and two converted spectra in elements with Kerr nonlinearity for different B-integrals characterizing nonlinear phase accumulation. The hardware implementation of the proposed method is very simple. This method requires only a one-dimensional data set, has no moving parts in the optical scheme, and allows for working with high-energy as well as low-energy pulses. We propose a novel simple, efficient, noise-tolerant algorithm for data processing that assumes spectral phase approximation by a polynomial function. We demonstrate numerically the reconstruction of mid-IR ultrashort pulses, namely 3 μm wavelength pulses, using commercial chalcogenide As2S3-based glass fibers as nonlinear elements. The application of pultruded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in civil engineering is increasing as a high-performance structural element or reinforcing material for rehabilitation purposes. The advantageous aspects of the pultrusion production technique and the weaknesses arising from the 0° fiber orientation in the drawing direction should be considered. In this direction, it is thought that the structural performance of the profiles produced by the pultrusion technique can be increased with 90° windings by using different fiber types. This paper presents experimental studies on the effect of FRP composite wrapping on the flexure performance of reinforced concrete (RC) filled pultruded glass-FRP (GFRP) profile hybrid beams with damage analysis. The hybrid beams are wrapped fully and partially with Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Hybrid beam specimens with 0° to 90° fiber orientations were tested under three- and four-point bending loads. Based on the experimental load–displacement relationship results, initial stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity were compared. The experimental findings revealed that the maximum load-carrying capacities of beams produced with pultrude profiles increased by 24% with glass wrapping and 64.4% with carbon wrapping due to the change in the damages. The structure and mechanical properties of an injection-moulded short glass fibre (GF)-reinforced polymer composite were analysed through simulation methods. Fibre orientation, which evolves during the production of a thick-walled automotive part, was determined with an injection moulding simulation. Next, using the material model for the injected product, the force that resulted from the given deformation was determined with finite element software. To validate the simulation results, the examined products were manufactured with 30% reinforced GF, and then measurements were carried out. The validation of the fibre orientation tensor was achieved with optical microscope images, while the validation of the finite element, which analysed the flexural tests, was carried out through a comparison of flexural rigidity. The aim of the project was to verify the reliability of multi-stage finite element software. According to the results, in the case of a thick-walled GF-reinforced product, it was demonstrated that the integration of a different finite element software could be used reliably. The presented article concentrates on the influence of various concrete additives in the form of fibers on the mechanical parameters of concrete so as to obtain the effect of gradual changes in these parameters, which is very important in the transition zone of the railway track. Steel, polymer and glass fibers, as well as concrete without additives, were accepted for the study. The effect of additives on the consistency of the mixture, compressive strength, frost resistance and elastic modulus was studied. The research concerned concrete samples and models of elements of the ballastless railway surface, i.e., track slab and concrete block supports. The track slab model was made of concrete without additives, while the models of supports were made both without and with additives. The studies were carried out in laboratory conditions. As a result, the tested concrete samples with various additives were ranked so that they could be used as a material for elements of the railway surface in the transition zones of engineering facilities on railway roads, which is important from the point of view of reducing the threshold effect occurring in these zones. Detailed laboratory tests were presented, the results of these studies were discussed, and final conclusions were drawn regarding the technology of materials and the methodology of constructing the transition zones of the railway surface in order to avoid or at least reduce the threshold effect existing in such zones. Buildings and other infrastructure should be designed to withstand impact loads in terrorist attacks or industrial catastrophes. Fibrous concrete is utilized in a variety of ways in the construction of structures to resist impact loads. Preplaced aggregate fibrous concrete (PAFC) has a different production method than traditional fibrous concrete. Although PAFC offers several benefits over standard fibers in the construction of protective structures, there are relatively few investigations on the behavior of PAFC when exposed to impact loads. This research investigated the impact response of PFAC with the combined action of steel fibers and glass fiber mesh (GFM). Twenty-two mixtures were prepared and divided into two groups in which there were fibrous and non-fibrous specimens. The specimens from the first group comprised various diameters (ratio of reinforcement surface to total sample surface) of GFM and were provided in two and four layers. The second group of specimens is the same as the first group, including a 3% dosage of steel fibers. All specimens were subjected to a drop-weight impact test and the key parameters examined were cracking and failure impact energies, ductility index and failure pattern. The results indicated that the incorporation of GFM increased the impact performance and impact ductility, where the retained impact energies and the ductility index increased by increasing the ratio of reinforcement surface (diameter) of GFM and its number of layers. However, the positive influence of SF in enhancing the impact performance was way higher than that of GFM. The use of 3% hooked-end SF improved the failure impact energy by more than 3000%, while the maximum improvement gained by using four layers of 150 mm diameter (full reinforcement surface) GFM was approximately 400%. Concrete is the most widely used and most affordable construction material. The structural damage that concrete cracks and fractures may cause can be severe. These concerns have lately been alleviated by new developments in fibre concretes. Recent advancements in fibrous concrete and its evolution have been rapidly drawing researchers' attentions worldwide, which motivates the development of a new type of composite with superior impact resistance. Preplaced aggregate fibrous concrete (PAFC) is a revolutionary composite comprising a higher dosage of fibres. It has outstanding impact resistance that surpasses those of traditional fibrous concrete. The impact behaviour of PAFC in addition to glass fibre mesh (GFM) has not been investigated thoroughly. To fill this research gap, this study investigates the impact performance of three-layered PAFC comprising steel fibres and GFM insertion. Eight different mixtures were prepared and can be divided into two groups. In the first group, specimens were made with 4% fibres and two single, double and triple layers of GFM insertion between the three-layered concrete. The second group of specimens was reinforced with 5, 2 and 5% steel fibres at the top, middle and bottom layers, respectively. However, the GFM insertion scheme for the second group was the same as the first. Rectangular specimens of size 500 × 100 × 100 mm were cast and tested against drop weight impact. The parameters studied were cracking impact numbers, failure impact number, ductility index and failure patterns. In addition, an analytical model was used to evaluate the impact failure energies. Results indicate that the combined action of steel fibre and GFM exhibited an excellent impact resistance. Increasing the number of GFM insertions between the specimen layer led to increased impact strength. The dose of the fibres utilized in the outer layer of the PAFC was increased, resulting in the material having a higher impact resistance. The cracking impact numbers improved from 28 to 40%, and failure impact numbers ranged from 58.8 to 92.2% when the GFM insertion numbers increased from one to three. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to their valuable properties (low weight, and good thermal and mechanical properties), glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics are becoming increasingly important. Fiber-reinforced thermoplastics are mainly manufactured by injection molding and extrusion, whereby the extrusion compounding process is primarily used to produce fiber-filled granulates. Reproducible production of high-quality components requires a granulate in which the fiber length is even and high. However, the extrusion process leads to the fact that fiber breakages can occur during processing. To enable a significant quality enhancement, experimentally validated modeling is required. In this study, short glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics (polypropylene) were produced on two different twin-screw extruders. Therefore, the machine-specific process behavior is of major interest regarding its influence. First, the fiber length change after processing was determined by experimental investigations and then simulated with the SIGMA simulation software. By comparing the simulation and experimental tests, important insights could be gained and the effects on fiber lengths could be determined in advance. The resulting fiber lengths and distributions were different, not only for different screw configurations (SC), but also for the same screw configurations on different twin-screw extruders. Composites of polyurea (PU) reinforced with milled glass fiber (MGf) were fabricated. The volume fraction and length of the milled glass fiber were varied to study their effects on the morphological and mechanical properties of the MGf/PU composites. The morphological attributes were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The SEM investigations revealed a uniform distribution and arbitrary orientation of milled glass fiber in the polyurea matrix. Moreover, it seems that the composites with longer fiber exhibit better interfacial bonding. It was found from the FTIR studies that the incorporation of milled glass fiber into polyurea leads to more phase mixing and decreases the hydrogen bonding of the polyurea matrix, while having a negligible effect on the H-bond strength. The compression tests at different strain rates (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 2000 and 3000 s−1) and dynamic mechanical properties over the temperature range from −30 to 100 °C at 1 Hz were performed. Experimental results show that the compressive behavior of MGf/PU composites is nonlinear and strain-rate-dependent. Both elastic modulus and flow stress at any given strain increased with strain rate. The composites with higher fiber volume fraction and longer fiber length are more sensitive to strain rate. Furthermore, the elastic modulus, stress at 65% strain and energy absorption capability were studied, taking into account both the effect of fiber volume fraction and mean fiber length. It is noted that an increase in fiber volume fraction and fiber length leads to an increase in elastic modulus, stress at 65% strain and absorbed energy up to ~103%, 83.0% and 137.5%, respectively. The storage and loss moduli of the composites also increase with fiber volume fraction and fiber length. It can be concluded that the addition of milled glass fiber into polyurea not only improves the stiffness of the composites but also increases their energy dissipative capability. The research shows the comparison between two types of polyamide-based (PA) composites and pure, base material. The conducted analysis describes how the additions of carbon fibers and glass microbeads affect the material's properties and its behavior during the bending tests. All samples have been tested in the three main directions available during the FFF process. To extend the scope of the research, additional digital-image-correlation tests and fracture analyses were made. The obtained results indicated a positive influence of the addition of carbon fibers into the material's volume (from 81.39 MPa in the case of pure PA to 243.62 MPa in the case of the PA reinforced by carbon fibers). Glass fiber-reinforced phenolic resins are well suited to substitute aluminum die-cast materials. They meet the high thermomechanical and chemical demands that are typically found in combustion engine and electric drive train applications. An injection molding process development for further improving their mechanical properties by increasing the glass fiber length in the molded part was conducted. A novel screw mixing element was developed to improve the homogenization of the long fibers in the phenolic resin. The process operation with the mixing element is a balance between the desired mixing action, an undesired preliminary curing of the phenolic resin, and the reduction of the fiber length. The highest mixing energy input leads to a reduction of the initial fiber length L0 = 5000 μm to a weighted average fiber length of Lp = 571 μm in the molded part. This is an improvement over Lp = 285 μm for a short fiber-reinforced resin under comparable processing conditions. The mechanical characterization shows that for the long fiber-reinforced materials, the benefit of the increased homogeneity outweighs the disadvantages of the reduced fiber length. Local fiber alignment in fiber-reinforced thermoplastics is governed by complex flows during the molding process. As fiber-induced material anisotropy leads to non-homogeneous effective mechanical properties, accurate prediction of the final orientation state is critical for integrated structural simulations of these composites. In this work, a data-driven inverse modeling approach is proposed to improve the physics-based structural simulation of short glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics. The approach is divided into two steps: (1) optimization of the fiber orientation distribution (FOD) predicted by the Reduce Strain Closure (RSC) model, and (2) identification of the composite's mechanical properties used in the Ramberg–Osgood (RO) multiscale structural model. In both steps, the identification of the model's parameters was carried out using a Genetic Algorithm. Artificial Neural Networks were used as a machine learning-based surrogate model to approximate the simulation results locally and reduce the computational time. X-ray micro-computed tomography and tensile tests were used to acquire the FOD and mechanical data, respectively. The optimized parameters were then used to simulate a tensile test for a specimen injection molded in a dumbbell-shaped cavity selected as a case study for validation. The FOD prediction error was reduced by 51% using the RSC optimized coefficients if compared with the default coefficients of the RSC model. The proposed data-driven approach, which calculates both the RSC coefficients and the RO parameters by inverse modeling from experimental data, allowed improvement in the prediction accuracy by 43% for the elastic modulus and 59% for the tensile strength, compared with the non-optimized analysis. Antibacterial filtration materials have been used effectively to control biological pollutants and purify indoor air. This study aimed to assess the antibacterial capability of three fiber filter materials treated with triclosan: glass fiber (GF), non-woven fabric (NF) and chemical fiber (CF). Triclosan was loaded onto the filtration materials by the impregnation method. The triclosan-treated filter materials exhibited antibacterial zones obviously: the average antibacterial bands against E. coli were 11.8 mm (GF), 13.3 mm (NF) and 10.5 mm (CF); against S. albus, they were 25.5 mm (GF), 21.0 mm (NF) and 23.5 mm (CF). The percent reductions of bacteria for the antibacterial air fiber materials treated with triclosan against E. coli were 71.4% (CF) and 62.6% (GF), while the percent reductions against S. albus were 61.3% (NF) and 84.6% (CF). The current studies aim to measure the mechanical strength based on age, harvesting season and bamboo species in Ethiopia. The bamboo fibres are extracted using a roll milling machine, which was developed by the author. The age groups (1, 2 and 3 years), harvesting months (February and November), and bamboo species (Yushania alpina and Bambusa oldhamii) are the parameters of the current research studies. Prepregs and composites were produced from bamboo fibres and polypropylene. The mechanical properties of bamboo fibres and their composites in Ethiopia have not been investigated by researchers for the composite application so far. The tensile strength, Young's modulus, and impact strength of injibara (Y. alpina) bamboo fibres reinforced PP composites from the ages of 1– 3 years old in November is 111 ± 9–125 ± 8 MPa, 15 ± 0.9–25 ± 0.72 GPa, and 47 ± 5 KJ/m2–57 ± 6 KJ/m2, whereas, in February, it is 86 ± 3.86–116 ± 10 MPa, 11 ± 0.71–23 ± 1.5 GPa, and 34 ± 4–52 ± 6 KJ/m2, respectively. Moreover, Kombolcha (B. oldhamii), bamboo fibres reinforced PP composites in November are 93 ± 7–111 ± 8 MPa, 7 ± 0.51–17 ± 2.56 GPa, and 39 ± 4–44 ± 5 KJ/m2, whereas, in February, it is 60 ± 5–104 ± 10 MPa, 12 ± 0.95–14 ± 0.92 GPa, and 26 ± 3 KJ/m2–38 ± 4 KJ/m2, respectively. Furthermore, Mekaneselam (Y. alpina) bamboo fibres reinforced PP composites in November are 99 ± 8–120 ± 11 MPa, 9 ± 0.82–16 ± 1.85 GPa, and 37 ± 4 KJ/m2–46 ± 5 KJ/m2, whereas, in February, it is 91 ± 8–110 ± 9 MPa, 8 ± 0.75–14 ± 1.86 GPa, and 34 ± 3 KJ/m2–40 ± 4 KJ/m2, respectively. At two years, November and Injibara bamboo have recorded the highest mechanical properties in the current research studies. Resin/fiber composites were prepared by the FDM printing technology. The effects of arrangements, types (carbon, glass, and Kevlar), and volume fraction of fibers on the shear and tensile properties of resin 3D-printed composites are investigated in this paper. The experimental results show that the addition of continuous fibers increases the shear strength and tensile strength of FDM-3D-printed composites, but the strength will not keep increasing with an increase in the fiber content. As the fiber content increases, the print quality decreases, and the porosity between the fibers increases. The enhancement degree of the shear stress of specimens by different fiber types can be classified as follows: glass fiber > carbon fiber > Kevlar fiber. Notch sensitivity is reduced when the 90° arrangement of fibers is added, while the addition of 0° arranged fibers will improve the notch sensitivity of the sample. As basalt fiber has better mechanical properties and stability than glass fiber, cross arms made of continuous basalt-fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites are capable of meeting the mechanical requirements in the event of typhoons and broken lines in coastal areas, mountainous areas and other special areas. In this paper, continuous basalt-fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites were used to fabricate the core rods and composite cross arms. The results verified that basalt fiber composite cross arms can meet the strict requirements of transmission lines in terms of quality and reliability. In addition to high electrical insulation performance, the flexural modulus and the flexural strength of basalt fiber core rods are 1.8 and 1.06 times those of glass fiber core rods, respectively. Basalt fiber core rods were found to be much better load-bearing components compared to glass fiber core rods. However, the leakage current and the result of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis reveal that the interface bonding strength between basalt fibers and the matrix resin is weak. A 3D reconstruction of micro-CT indicates that the volume of pores inside basalt fiber core rods accounts for 0.0048% of the total volume, which is greater than the 0.0042% of glass fiber rods. Fibers are applied in construction work to improve the strength and avoid brittle failure of soil. In this paper, we analyze the impact mechanism of fiber type and length on the immobilization of microorganisms from macroscopic and microscopic perspectives with fibers of 0.2% volume fraction added to microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP)-treated sand. Results show the following: (1) The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of MICP-treated sand first increases and then decreases with increasing fiber length because short fiber reinforcement can promote the precipitation of calcium carbonate, and the network formed between the fibers limits the movement of sand particles and enhances the strength of the microbial solidified sand. However, the agglomeration caused by overlong fibers leads to uneven distribution of calcium carbonate and a reduction in strength. The optimal fiber length of polypropylene, glass, and polyvinyl alcohol fiber is 9 mm, and that of basalt fiber is 12 mm. (2) The UCS of the different fiber types, from small to large, is basalt fiber < polypropylene fiber < glass fiber < polyvinyl alcohol fiber because the quality of the fiber monofilament differs. The main objective of this study is to better understand the performance changes of naturally aged glass fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) and polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete (PPFRC), especially the degradation of fibers, which is of great significance for evaluating the durability of structures using these two types of composite materials. The mechanical properties, water absorption, and microstructures of GFRC and PPFRC at a curing age of three years, including their compressive strength, full curves of water absorption, fiber-matrix interaction, and fiber degradation, were systematically studied, and the related properties were compared with those at the curing age of 28 days. The degradation of fibers after freeze-thaw cycles was also studied. The results revealed the following. The water/binder ratio (w/b) affects the rate of increase of the long-term compressive strength of naturally aged concrete. In general, the water absorption of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) at the curing age of three years was found to be significantly reduced, but with the increases of w/b and the fiber content to the maximum values, the water absorption of the specimens cured for three years was higher than that of the specimens cured for 28 days. Moreover, with the increase of the curing age, the optimal glass fiber (GF) contents for reducing the water absorption decreased from 1.35% to 0.90% (w/b = 0.30), and from 0.90% to 0.45% (w/b = 0.35), respectively. The GF surface was degraded into continuous pits with diameters of about 200 to 600 nm, and the surface of the pits was attached with spherical granular C-S-H gel products with diameters of about 30 to 44 nm. The freeze-thaw cycles were found to have no significant effect on the pits on the GF surface and the granular C-S-H gel products attached to the pits, but caused a portion of the cement matrix covering the GF to fall off. The interfacial bonding between the polypropylene fiber (PPF) and the cement matrix exhibited almost no change in the PPFRC after three years of curing as compared with that after 28 days of curing. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is one of the most commonly used additive manufacturing technologies. However, the applied material for commercial FFF is limited. Presently, though being one of the most used polymer materials, polypropylene (PP) is rarely used in FFF because of its serious warpage and shrinkage problems. This study investigated the impact of addition of short glass fibers (GF) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) on the printability of polypropylene random copolymer (PPR) based FFF and mechanical properties of the printed samples, as well as other properties including rheology, thermal behaviors, and morphology. The results show that the modified PPR has excellent printability, as the printed samples are of good geometrical accuracy. The addition of GF can significantly improve the strength and modulus of the composite, but it also leads to serious decrease in toughness. EPDM addition can effectively improve the toughness of the composite, showing a complementary effect with GF. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and PCL/bioactive glass composite fiber mats were produced by electrospinning technique. To improve cell adhesion and proliferation (i) 45S5, (ii) a bioactive glass containing strontium and magnesium oxides, and (iii) a bioactive glass containing zinc oxide were separately added to the starting PCL solution before electrospinning. A good incorporation of bioactive glass particles in PCL electrospun mats was confirmed by SEM and FTIR analyses. Bioactivity was evaluated by immersion of PCL mats and PCL/bioactive glass electrospun fiber mats in simulated body fluid (SBF). Bone murine stromal cells (ST-2) were employed in WST-8 assay to assess cell viability, cell morphology, and proliferation. The results showed that the presence of bioactive glass particles in the fibers enhances cell adhesion and proliferation compared to neat PCL mats. Furthermore, PCL/bioactive glass electrospun mats showed higher wound-healing rate (measured as cell migration rate) in vitro compared to neat PCL electrospun mats. Therefore, the characteristics of the PCL matrix combined with biological properties of bioactive glasses make PCL/bioactive glass composite ideal candidate for biomedical application. Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) is an elastomeric polymer which is attracting increasing interest for biomedical applications, including cartilage regeneration. However, its limited mechanical properties and possible negative effects of its degradation byproducts restrict PGS for in vivo application. In this study, a novel PGS-bioactive glass fiber (F18)-reinforced composite was developed and characterized. PGS-based reinforced scaffolds were fabricated via salt leaching and characterized regarding their mechanical properties, degradation, and bioactivity in contact with simulated body fluid. Results indicated that the incorporation of silicate-based bioactive glass fibers could double the composite tensile strength, tailor the polymer degradability, and improve the scaffold bioactivity. Bird strike, volcanic rock, hailstones, micrometeoroids, or space debris can cause damage to aircraft and space vehicles, therefore their composite materials must have high impact resistance to maximize safety. In a 55% wt. CaCO3 compression molded short glass fiber polyester GFRP-BMC (bulk molded compound), shortening the nominal 6.4 mm fiber length formulation, by 30 min extended mixing, to 0.44 mm was found to increase Charpy impact values, auc, without a change in the compression molding equipment. Specimens were cut from square panels in a spiral configuration in conformity with ASTM D 6110-02 for orthotropic panels, the flow direction approximately radially outward from the charge. At a median-fracture probability of Pf = 0.50, extended mixing improved auc by 29%, from 7.43 to 9.59 kJm−2, and for each solidification texture angle, namely, 0 to 90 (random), 71, 45 and 18 deg, the auc increased by 25% (6.26 to 7.86 kJm−2), 18% (9.36 to 11.07 kJm−2), 35% (7.68 to 10.37 kJm−2), and 20% (6.96 to 8.36 kJm−2), respectively. This strengthening can be explained by an increased number of thermal compressive stress sites between the glass fiber and matrix due to a difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) during cool-down, and shrinkage, with an increased number of spaces between fibers, |Sf| from 217 to approximately 2950 per mm3, enhancing impact energy. The fibre–matrix interface plays an important role in the overall mechanical behaviour of a fibre-reinforced composite, but the classical approach to improving the interface through chemical sizing is bounded by the materials' properties. By contrast, structural and/or geometrical modification of the interface may provide mechanical interlocking and have wider possibilities and benefits. Here we investigate the introduction of polymer beads along the interface of a fibre and validate their contribution by a single fibre fragmentation test. Using glass fibres and the same epoxy system for both matrix and beads, an increase of 17.5% is observed in the interfacial shear strength of the beaded fibres compared to fibres with no polymer beads. This increase should lead to a similar improvement in the strength and toughness of a beaded fibre composite when short fibres are used. The beads were also seen to stabilise the fragmentation process of a fibre by reducing the scatter in fragment density at a given strain. A case could also be made for a critical beads number—4 beads in our experimental system—to describe interfacial shear strength, analogous to a critical length used in fibre composites. The new requirements in different sectors, such as aerospace, automotive and construction, for lightweight materials have led to an increase in demand for composite materials suitable for use in high rate production processes, such as plastic injection. This makes it necessary to look for matrices and reinforcements that, in addition to being compatible with each other, are also compatible with the injection process. It is in this area of research where the work presented here arises. To meet the two requirements mentioned above, this study contemplates a battery of composite materials obtained by combining PA66 and fiberglass, in different proportions and configuration, both for the preparation of the matrix and for reinforcement. For the elaboration of the matrix, two options have been evaluated, PA66 and PA66 reinforced at 35% with short glass fibre. To obtain reinforcement, six different options have been evaluated; two conventional fiberglass fabrics (each with different density) and four hybrid fabrics obtained from the previous ones by adding PA66 in different configurations (two over-stitched fabrics and two other fabrics). Recycling of materials attracts considerable attention around the world due to environmental and economic concerns. Recycled rubber is one of the most commonly used recyclable materials in a number of industries, including automotive and aeronautic because of their low weight and cost efficiency. In this research, devulcanized recycled rubber-based composites are designed with glass bubble microsphere, short glass fiber, aluminum chip and fine gamma alumina fiber (γ-Al2O3) reinforcements. After the determination of the reinforcements with matrix, bending strength and fracture characteristics of the composite are investigated by three-point bending (3PB) tests. Halpin–Tsai homogenization model is adapted to the rubber-based composites to estimate the moduli of the composites. Furthermore, the relevant toughening mechanisms for the most suitable reinforcements are analyzed and stress intensity factor, KIc and critical energy release rate, GIc in mode I are determined by 3PB test with single edge notch specimens. In addition, 3PB tests are simulated by finite element analysis and the results are compared with the experimental results. Microstructural and fracture surfaces analysis are carried out by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical test results show that the reinforcement with glass bubbles, aluminum oxide ceramic fibers and aluminum chips generally increase the fracture toughness of the composites. To reinforce extensively prepared cavities, different types of fiber reinforcement are utilized. Polyethylene and glass fibers are the most commonly used fibers in that purpose; each type has its own advantages over the other type. Therefore, the aim of this study is to review the literature to evaluate and compare the influence of different fiber reinforcement types on the performance of posterior large composite restorations. Two independent authors performed a comprehensive literature search using MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, and a manual search for cross references until July 2021. Authors selected only studies that contain comparisons between glass (continuous or short) and polyethylene (woven) fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) in posterior cavities of human teeth, and that report the effect of fiber inclusion on fracture resistance, microleakage, and marginal adaptation of restorations. A number of 2711 potentially relevant articles were obtained from the electronic search. After extensive assessment, 2696 articles were ineligible to be included in the review, and only 15 articles met the inclusion criteria. Four out of nine studies, which tested the fracture resistance of FRC restorations, revealed similar performance of the glass and polyethylene fibers. The rest of the studies (n = 5) revealed statistically significant differences between the two types of fiber reinforcement, with the majority showed superior reinforcement of glass fiber. Moreover, the reviewed studies revealed that, using fibers within the composite restorations would reduce the microleakage and improve the marginal adaptation of the restoration regardless of the fiber type. Green composites, composed of bio-based matrices and natural fibers, are a sustainable alternative for composites based on conventional thermoplastics and glass fibers. In this work, micronized bleached Eucalyptus kraft pulp (BEKP) fibers were used as reinforcement in biopolymeric matrices, namely poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). The influence of the load and aspect ratio of the mechanically treated microfibers on the morphology, water uptake, melt flowability, and mechanical and thermal properties of the green composites were investigated. Increasing fiber loads raised the tensile and flexural moduli as well as the tensile strength of the composites, while decreasing their elongation at the break and melt flow rate. The reduced aspect ratio of the micronized fibers (in the range from 11.0 to 28.9) improved their embedment in the matrices, particularly for PHB, leading to superior mechanical performance and lower water uptake when compared with the composites with non-micronized pulp fibers. The overall results show that micronization is a simple and sustainable alternative for conventional chemical treatments in the manufacturing of entirely bio-based composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
