WHO's Health Systems Performance Assessment framework suggests monitoring a set of dimensions. This study aims to jointly assess productivity and quality using a treatment-based approach, specifically analyzing knee and hip replacement, two prevalent surgical procedures performed with consolidated technology and run in most acute-care hospitals. Focusing on the analysis of these procedures sets out a novel approach providing clues for hospital management improvements, covering an existing gap in the literature. The Malmquist index under the metafrontier context was used to estimate the productivity in both procedures and its decomposition in terms of efficiency, technical and quality change. A multilevel logistic regression was specified to obtain the in-hospital mortality as a quality factor. All Spanish public acute-care hospitals were classified according to their average severity attended, dividing them into three groups. Our study revealed a decrease in productivity mainly due to a decrease in the technological change. Quality change remained constant during the period with highest variations observed between one period to the next according to the hospital classification. The improvement in the technological gap between different levels was due to an improvement in quality. These results provide new insights of operational efficiency after incorporating the quality dimension, specifically highlighting a decreasing operational performance, confirming that the technological heterogeneity is a critical question when measuring hospital performance.

This study aims to measure the ability of 29 countries in producing competitive products and services that fulfill individual needs and improve the level of welfare with less utilization of natural resources. We build a two-stage network production process model to investigate the ecology efficiency and social welfare efficiency of the countries and then further discriminate the efficient countries in post-analysis. The two-stage network directional distance function is applied to assess the efficiencies of countries, and the network-based ranking approach is used to further discriminate the efficient countries following the panel data between the years 2013 and 2016. Results show that Poland and Spain are strongly referenced by other countries in the ecology stage, whereas Bulgaria, the United States, and Sweden are leaders in the social welfare stage. A remarkable observation is an absence of countries' efficiency in both ecology and social welfare efficiencies. Most of the 29 countries have lower efficiency in the social welfare stage than in the ecology stage. This study suggests the strengths and highlights the weaknesses of the countries to help the governments efficiently improve and operate their countries.

Improving the level of public sports services enhances citizens' physical fitness by implementing the national fitness program. A systematic and scientific efficiency evaluation is a prerequisite for optimizing and improving the level of public sports services in China. Based on data of the Chinese Statistic Yearbook, this study adopted the three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to measure and analyze the efficiency of public sports services in 31 provinces in China in 2016. To analyze the efficiency of public sports services, technical efficiency was decomposed into pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. Simultaneously, environmental variables were added to improve accuracy. The results showed that scale efficiency was overestimated, and external technical efficiency was underestimated, before the elimination of external factors and environmental variables. Environmental factors significantly impacted the efficiency of public sports services. Regional gross domestic product (GDP) had a potentially positive impact, while population size partially restricted public sports service efficiency. After eliminating the impact of environmental and random factors, the comprehensive efficiency, pure technical efficiency, and scale efficiency of public sports services all showed improvement in varying degrees. The results provide beneficial insights for the formulation of rational improvement policies for public sports services.

This study aims to evaluate the level of technical efficiency of companies that perform the integrated management of basic sanitation in Brazilian municipalities. A Multiple Data Envelopment Analysis (M-DEA) model was applied to estimate the performance of water supply and sewage services in 1628 municipalities covering more than 56% of the Brazilian population, identifying the factors that most influence the efficiency of the sector in the years 2008 and 2016. The M-DEA methodology is an extension of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with multiple DEA executions considering all combinations of inputs and outputs to calculate efficiency scores. The methodology reduces possible biases in the selection of resources and products of the model, ability to support decision-making in favor of improvements in the sector's efficiency based on national regulatory framework. The analyses show that the companies analyzed can increase their operating results and attendance coverage by more than 60%, given the current levels of infrastructure, human and financial resources in the sector. Based on the simulation of potential efficiency gains in Brazilian basic sanitation companies, the estimates show that the coverage of the population with access to sanitary sewage would go from the current 59.9% to 76.5%. This study aims to evaluate the financial risk, debt, and efficiency of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in Indonesia's construction industry and compare these aspects with those of private companies through financial ratio analysis and efficiency analysis approaches. Four SOEs from the construction sector were evaluated and compared to five private companies with financial data ranging from 2015 to 2022. Financial ratio analysis was applied to assess debt and financial risk, while efficiency analysis utilized data envelopment analysis (DEA) and paired t-tests to validate differences between the two groups of companies. This study reveals that the financial ratio performance of state-owned companies is relatively poor, with low profitability, critical liquidity, and a high debt ratio. Debt, as a source of capital in financing construction projects, causes companies to face a greater debt risk. This study also validates that SOEs have lower efficiency compared to private companies. In response to current challenges, SOEs should prioritize enhancing liquidity through faster receivable collections, debt restructuring, capital infusions, and divestment, reducing non-essential investments, focusing on asset recycling, and improving project efficiency. This comparative study analyzed the impact of loan portfolio composition on the efficiency of different types of banks in India—public sector, old private, and new private banks—in the period between 2013 and 2022. Efficiency was evaluated using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The study considered four loan variables—term lending, working capital, priority sector lending, and secured lending in proportion to the overall loans—as independent factors against the efficiency score as the dependent variable, using a random-effects generalized least squares (GLS) regression framework. The results indicate that there were no significant effects on the efficiency of old private banks, except for working capital, which had a marginally negative impact on bank efficiency. Working capital, priority sector lending, and term lending have been found to significantly impact the efficiency of new private banks. This comprehensive study explored the efficiency landscape of the Jordanian banking industry from 2006 to 2021, utilizing a dual-pronged approach. First, we assessed the efficiency scores of 15 commercial banks, comprising 13 conventional and 2 Islamic institutions, through data envelopment analysis (DEA). Secondly, we investigated the determinants influencing relative efficiency using the Tobit regression model. Our dataset, spanning 240 observations over 16 years, provides a nuanced examination of industry dynamics. DEA, specifically focusing on variable return to scale (VRS), unveils efficiency scores by accounting for scale inefficiencies. The research contributes insights into the operational efficacy of Jordanian banks and provides a robust methodology for understanding efficiency dynamics in the broader financial landscape. The results reveal significant relationships between return on assets, return on equity, GDP growth, and efficiency. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that Islamic banks demonstrate higher efficiency compared to conventional banks. Additionally, non-significant associations were observed with credit risk, bank size, and the ratio of loan loss provision over net income. Eco-efficiency is commonly used as an indicator of sustainability since it expresses the efficiency with which natural resources are utilized to meet people's needs. Agriculture relies heavily on these ecological resources and by-produces significant environmental burdens, shifting the interest of researchers and policymakers toward the promotion of ecological practices. However, limited evidence exists regarding eco-efficiency across various ecological approaches like low input, conservation, and organic farming. This paper contributes to the existing literature and provides insight into the eco-efficiency of Cretan olive farms managed under different ecological approaches. Olive oil production is vital for the socio-economic sustainability of Mediterranean agriculture, a significant element of the region's culture, and the basis of the well-known "Mediterranean diet"; therefore, it is crucial to investigate eco-efficient management options for olive farmers. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and a second-stage statistical analysis are employed to estimate the eco-efficiency of olive farms and investigate factors affecting it. Composite indicators for biodiversity, soil, and input management are incorporated in the eco-efficiency model. The results indicate that organic farms achieve the highest eco-efficiency scores, followed by other ecological approaches. Measuring and understanding the evolution of the electricity generation efficiency sector is a relevant task for policymakers. This study focuses on assessing the determinants of electricity generation efficiency across 24 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean between 2000 and 2020. A hurdle model was employed to account for the censored nature of the dependent variable. The findings show a positive impact of opening up the electricity sector in fully efficient countries. Market liberalization and the involvement of privately owned power plants contribute to efficiency gains in inefficient countries. Additionally, the tariff protectionism level exhibits positive effects for completely efficient and inefficient countries. These results provide valuable insights, as less-efficient countries can glean strategies from their more efficient counterparts to enhance their electricity generation efficiency. This study aims to present the meaningful implications of introducing a tramway as a new mode of transportation in the Daejeon Metropolitan Area, a major metropolitan area in South Korea. An efficiency comparison by data envelopment analysis (DEA) was carried out, using variables selected from the 2021 Public Transportation Investigation by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KTSA) (2021), and the 'Guidelines for selecting new transportation means' announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport in 2021. As a result, the efficiency of public transportation in major metropolitan areas outside of the capital region was higher than in the capital metropolitan area. In particular, the Daejeon Metropolitan Area ranked high in efficiency compared to other major metropolitan areas with similar conditions. It is well-known that the weighted averages of two competing forecasts may reduce mean squared prediction errors (MSPE) and may also introduce certain inefficiencies. In this paper, we take an in-depth view of one particular type of inefficiency stemming from simple combination schemes: Mincer and Zarnowitz inefficiency or auto-inefficiency for short. Under mild assumptions, we show that linear convex forecast combinations are almost always auto-inefficient, and, therefore, greater reductions in MSPE are almost always possible. In particular, we show that the process of taking averages of forecasts may induce inefficiencies in the combination, even when individual forecasts are efficient. Furthermore, we show that the so-called "optimal weighted average" traditionally presented in the literature may indeed be inefficient as well. Finally, we illustrate our findings with simulations and an empirical application in the context of the combination of headline inflation forecasts for eight European economies. Overall, our results indicate that in situations in which a number of different forecasts are available, the combination of all of them should not be the last step taken in the search of forecast accuracy. Measuring efficiency and determining factors that may influence it are very important steps to improve the businesses' competitive position, growth, and sustainability. This paper aims to investigate the efficiency of small accommodation businesses located in Greek non-coastal areas and to determine a set of factors that may affect it, from the perspective of the three dimensions of family businesses (family, business, ownership). The method adopted, in order for the research objective aim to be fulfilled, is the two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis model. In the first stage, the efficiency was estimated from a sample of 150 businesses. In the second stage, the influence of various factors on the examined efficiency was investigated by implementing a Bootstrap Truncated regression. The results showed that the majority of the examined businesses presented a low level of efficiency. Regarding the determination of the factors, it occurred that the manager's age, ownership form, and business type influenced the relative efficiency level in contrast to the factors of the business's age, the manager's sex and education level, the state of succession, as well as the manager's agricultural employment. In this paper, based on the pseudo-totem pole (PTP) circuit, a family of five-level PTP dual boost converters (PDBC) is proposed. A dual boost converter has some unique advantages, such as having no risk of bridge arm shoot-through and no problems related to switch body diode reverse recovery; thus, it has a good potential for applications. First, the derivation process, working principle, modulation and strategy of the topology are analyzed. Further, the number of power devices, switch voltages and current stress of the proposed topology is analyzed. Finally, a representative five-level PDBC experimental prototype is designed with AC input 220 V/50 Hz, DC output 400 V/1 kW, and peak efficiency of 98.27%. The data envelopment analysis is related to a non-parametric mathematical tool used to assess the relative efficiency of productive units. In different studies on productive efficiency, it is common to employ semi-parametric procedures in two stages to determine whether any exogenous factors of interest affect the performance of productive units. However, some of these procedures, particularly those based on conventional statistical inference, generate inconsistent estimates when dealing with incoherent data-generating processes. This inconsistency arises due to the efficiency scores being limited to the unit interval, and the estimated scores often exhibit serial correlation and have limited observations. To address such inconsistency, several strategies have been suggested, with the most well-known being an algorithm based on a parametric bootstrap procedure using the truncated normal distribution and its regression model. In this work, we present a modification of this algorithm that utilizes the beta distribution and its regression structure. The beta model allows for better accommodation of asymmetry in the data distribution. Our proposed algorithm introduces inferential characteristics that are superior to the original algorithm, resulting in a more statistically coherent data-generating process and improving the consistency property. In 2018, the Chinese government proposed the Rural Revitalization Strategy with the objective of bolstering economic development, social progress, and ecological protection in rural areas, thereby achieving rural modernization. This paper employs the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method and the Malmquist index model to measure the efficiency and changes of the agricultural circular economy in 31 provinces and cities in China from 2017 to 2020. Using Tobit regression, we further examine the correlation analysis in the context of the rural revitalization policy. The study reveals that the efficiency of China's agricultural circular economy continued to grow between 2017 and 2020. The policy of the rural revitalization strategy significantly impacts the efficiency of the agricultural circular economy. Government financial support has a significant positive influence on the efficiency of the agricultural circular economy. Based on the research findings, we proposed several constructive suggestions. This paper presents a literature review of efficiency analysis in transportation systems (TS). It builds a bibliometric review of published data-envelopment analysis and, for the first time, stochastic frontier analysis publications in TS. The retrieved publications were separated into five groups: highway/road transportation, air transportation, maritime/port transportation, railway transportation, and urban/bus transportation. The 135 data-envelopment-analysis rail-related publications were surveyed to assess the model used, the second-stage analysis (if any), the input–output variables, the model orientation, return-to-scale assumptions, and their methodological classification. The results show that frontier methods in transportation systems have gained relevance since 2017. Also, gaps in the literature and future directions have been identified in empirical rail research, such as eco-efficiency and safety-related issues, as well as the need for a better investigation of variable choice and scale return assumptions. Financial distress is a research topic in finance that has attracted attention from academia following past financial crises. Although previous studies associate financial distress with several elements, the relationship between distress and ESG has not been broadly explored. This paper investigates these issues by elaborating a Dynamic Network DEA model to address the underlying connections between accounting and financial indicators. Thus, a model that includes profit and loss, balance sheet, and capital and operating expenditures indicators is demonstrated under the dynamic network structure to compute financial-distress efficiency scores. Then, the impact of carryovers is considered for the accurate calculation of efficiency scores for the three substructures. The influence of contextual variables, such as socioeconomic and macroeconomic variables, and whether the firm owns an ESG Risk Score or not, is assessed through a stochastic non-linear model that combines three distinct regression types: Simplex, Tobit, and Beta. The results indicate that firms that hold an ESG Risk Score are less prone to be in financial distress, and Governance Score is negatively associated with financial distress efficiency. Retail supply chains are key on any market. Their significance has long been recognized in the literature and in practice. Various factors such as pandemics, economic crises, wars, and natural disasters have further increased interest in this area. However, the most recent research has focused more on resilience, sustainability, energy consumption, and a circular economy, while the efficiency of logistics processes has been almost completely overlooked. Logistics process efficiency in retail supply chain is a fundamental principle without which all mentioned performances cannot have desired values. This gap is precisely the main motivation of this research. In this paper, research models in literature are presented which can be used, with some modifications, to measure the efficiency of the retail supply chain. The models were based on the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. Four main groups were identified: standard DEA models, efficiency decomposition models, network models, and game-theory-based models. In the second part of the paper, various approaches were tested on a real example of a trading company operating in Serbia. Seven supply chains were observed, each consisting of a distribution center (DC) and retail store (RS). Variables used were the number of pallet places, logistics costs, number of deliveries, accuracy of deliveries, and turnover. The results showed the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches in real examples. The main contributions of this paper lie in unique approaches to measuring the efficiency of the retail supply chain. Foreign direct investment (FDI) is an important factor in building a strong economy for a country, particularly in developing and emerging markets. Both domestic enterprises and policy makers have been motivated to attract FDI for the benefits of FDI, such as technological transfers, spillover benefits, and rising competition. There is a need for a functional model to assess how the competitive index affects FDI attractiveness. Therefore, in this study, the authors use an integrated model of Grey Delphi, the Data Envelopment Analysis Super Slack-Based Measure Model (DEA–Super SBM), and the Malmquist Model (DEA–Malmquist) to evaluate the FDI attractiveness of Vietnamese provinces from 2017 to 2021. Firstly, ten critical dimensions of the provincial competitive index (PCI) affecting the number of FDI by cases and amount of FDI capital were validated via the Grey Delphi method. Secondly, the Super-SBM model is applied to assess the FDI efficiency of 63 provinces in Vietnam from 2017 to 2021. Then, the DEA–Malmquist model is employed to analyze the total change in the productivity of 63 provinces' FDI performance in Vietnam. The findings of this study revealed that the efficiency of FDI in Vietnam's provinces is relatively low, and there is a significant variation in the attractiveness of FDI among the provinces. With the shifting healthcare environment, the importance of public healthcare systems is being emphasized, and the efficiency of public healthcare systems has become a critical research agenda. We reviewed recent research on the efficiency of public healthcare systems using DEA, which is one of the leading methods for efficiency analysis. Through a systematic review, we investigated research trends in terms of research purposes, specific DEA techniques, input/output factors used for models, etc. Based on the review results, future research directions are suggested. This paper examines the multi-dimensional efficiency of the Islamic banking sector and its determinants, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. To do that, we use a novel approach of two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) double frontiers to evaluate the overall efficiency of 79 Islamic banks across 16 countries (2005–2020). In the first-stage analysis, we found that the Islamic banking sector experienced an increasing trend in its efficiency and performance, even during the recent pandemic, although it varied across banks and countries. Our empirical results of the second-stage analysis further showed that economic development can help countries both withstand the recent pandemic and improve the efficiency and performance of their (Islamic) banking system. This, in turn, could help speed up the recovery process of the global economy. Nowadays, concerns about environmental issues are increasing. Therefore, companies and producers are under pressure from government rules and regulations on one hand, and on the other hand, maintaining customer satisfaction concerning cares about the environment. Green supply chain management (GSCM) is a procedure to increase efficiency and decrease environmental effects for companies that collaborate with customers and suppliers. According to GSCM, there is some research about applying green aspects of purchasing, design, manufacture, distribution, packaging, marketing, and reverse logistics of supply chains to improve their company's performance regarding environmental issues. Moreover, recently, DEA as a nonparametric model is used to evaluate the efficiency and performance of supply chains as decision-making units (DMUs). However, previous studies on efficiency improvement in GSCM did not investigate the effect of some economic and environmental factors together such as service level, emissions (CO2), and size of the supply chains (arcs) on the efficiency of the whole supply system. These factors are essential as they can affect the manager's ability to distinguish the true performance of a green supply chain. Thus, evaluating the efficiency of GSCM by DEA models and imposing the green principles to find out the efficient ones for increasing management performance is vital. Fulfilling the mentioned research gap, this paper developed a benchmark approach to verifying efficient DMUs and potential efficient DMUs which may improve costs and efforts to become efficient. In the case study, the benchmarks and potentially efficient DMUs are found by DEA standard models and slight adjustment is conducted for potentially efficient DMUs to change their status to efficient DMUs. Moreover, the effect of some green principles on the efficiency value of DMUs is verified using Tobit regression before and after the mentioned modification. Malaysia has great geo-economic advantages, especially in becoming a major logistics and investment hub. However, as operational risk events create uncertainties, logistics companies suffer from supply and demand issues which affect their bottom lines, customer satisfaction and reputations. This is a pioneer paper to propose the optimization of the efficiency of listed logistics companies in Malaysia with operational risk factor using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model. The basic indicator approach (BIA) is used as an output indicator for the operational risk capital requirement factor in the proposed model. This paper has practical and managerial implications with the identification of potential improvements for the inefficient listed logistics companies based on the optimal solution of the DEA model. Technical efficiency (TE) and total factor productivity (TFP) are important criteria to ensure the enhancement of the quality and efficiency of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and function as important indicators to assess the quality of their accomplishments. The purpose of this study is to explore whether the efficiency of SOEs is higher or lower than that of private enterprises. Transcendental logarithmic production function and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) are used to assess the TE and TFP of listed central SOEs, local SOEs, and private enterprises, the data of which were taken from 2006–2020. The results show that the sampled private enterprises had the highest average TE during the study period, followed by the central and local SOEs. The private enterprises also had the highest average TFP growth rate, followed by the local and central SOEs. The TFP decompositions show that the TE change (TEC) and technical change (TC) indices of the SOEs were lower than those of the private enterprises. The TC, TEC, and scale change (SC) are limiting the TFP growth rates of the SOEs in labor-intensive industries. The SC of the SOEs has changed less than that of private enterprises in the sampled capital-intensive industries. Northern and southern China had the highest rates of TE and TFP growth. In this research, aspects of sustainability and efficiency were evaluated to provide information to decision makers. First, 39 rainbow trout farms were characterized, sustainability indices were determined for 36 production units using Sarandon's methodology, and technical efficiency was evaluated using input-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The production units studied were grouped into three clusters, and the most determining variables were associated with total annual production. In addition, a medium-level general index was obtained with a total of 60 sub-indicators, divided into four social indicators (with 10 sub-indicators), four economic indicators (with 34 sub-indicators) and three environmental indicators (totaling 16 sub-indicators). Of 33 production units evaluated, 14 were identified as efficient; the Amazonas region's trout farmers were found to operate at 83.87% technical efficiency on average. All resources showed room for improvement and thus can be further adjusted. The most underutilized resources were land (area), feed and seed (fry), which could be reduced to increase technical efficiency. In conclusion, the trout farming units in northeastern Peru are differentiated into three groups by production volume and operate at a medium level of sustainability, with most at levels of technical inefficiency. Background: Small regional airports provide the necessary assistance to enable mobility in isolated areas where access is critical and costly due to poor road infrastructure and geographic constraints. Colombia's air transportation industry has grown astonishingly quickly and dynamically over the past fifteen years. This period was coincident with the establishment and continued implementation of a public policy intended exclusively for the aviation industry and airports. However, there are currently no methods available to measure the efficiency of airports in Colombia, especially small regional airports. Methods: The research presented in this article aims to evaluate the technical efficiency of small regional airports in Colombia, using data envelopment analysis. This efficiency is achieved by considering the minimum infrastructure required to provide services and the administrative forms or properties that provide appropriate levels of this. Results: The study's input and output data are identified, a non-parametric data envelopment analysis methodology is used, and the findings are assessed. In recent decades, the Spanish port system has been investing in the development of infrastructures aimed at attracting the cruise market. For this reason, this paper analyses, using a methodology based on data envelopment analysis (DEA), the efficiency of the Spanish port system for the cruise market. Most of the port authorities want to attract and maintain this traffic in their ports, due to the economic impact it has on them. Based on the data provided by Puertos del Estado and the port authorities in their annual reports, such as the number of cruise passengers per port or port authority, the number of stopovers or ships that visit our ports each year, and the infrastructures that have been developed for this market, an efficiency analysis was carried out to draw conclusions at the level of the port system and each port authority in terms of operational efficiency. Focusing the research on Malaga, the current situation was analyzed, as well as the forecasts that resulted from the research for the future development of the port in terms of cruise ships. The efficiency of the national innovation system (NIS) is widely considered to be the most important factor of innovation-based economic growth. Using the wide spectrum of different metrics for measuring the efficiency of NIS, modern studies focus mainly on high-income or upper-middle-income countries, while the effectiveness of the NIS in post-Soviet countries has not been studied enough. The post-socialist transformation has led to different models of economic development in these countries, which can be divided into three groups: a group with developed European institutions, a group with a focus on the European path of development, and, finally, a group of countries with an economic model of "state capitalism". These models formed the trajectory of innovative development. The main purpose of this study is to compare the performance of NIS in post-Soviet countries and to find out whether differences between development institutions can help explain differences in the performance of NIS. The study applies the DEA methodology and considers NISs as homogeneous economic agents, which transform the same types of inputs (knowledge gained using human and financial resources) into the same types of positive outcomes (innovative products and services). The results of a study conducted on data for the period 2011–2018 show that there is no evidence to support the hypothesis that EU institutions or the type of economic model of the country directly relate to the effectiveness of the NIS. The example of Kazakhstan shows that NIS can be effective, even with strong state intervention in the economy. Taken together, the results of the paper suggest that the structure of R&D expenditures by sources of funding and types of research plays an important role in the formation of effective NIS. In this study, data envelopment analysis is applied to 47 dairy cattle farms to estimate their level of efficiency in the utilization of the available resources and to identify the most efficient ones. The analysis is based on technical and economic data collected through a farm management survey. The main structural and financial characteristics of the most efficient farms are presented, revealing the features that make them better than their peers. A comparative financial analysis is applied between the efficient and inefficient farms, highlighting the appropriate farm structure and determining the major cost drivers in modern dairy cattle farming. The results show that there is still room for improvement in intensive dairy farming. Dairy cattle farms must operate with increased variable cost and utilize their infrastructure at full capacity to decrease their fixed cost per cow. Farms should increase their economic resilience and be less risk averse in an environment where margins to lower production costs in highly intensive farms have been narrowed down. The findings of this study verify that dairy cattle farms of entrepreneurial mindset have the potential to rise to the future economic, environmental and social challenges that will affect the survival of the sector. To provide an effective energy transition, hydrogen is required to decarbonize the hard-to-abate industries. As a case study, this paper provides a holistic view of the hydrogen energy transition in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). By utilizing the directional distance function undesirable data envelopment analysis model, the energy, economic, and environmental efficiency of UAE sectors are estimated from 2001 to 2020 to prioritize hydrogen sector coupling. Green hydrogen production efficiency is analyzed from 2020 to 2050. The UAE should prioritize the industry and transportation sectors, with average efficiency scores of 0.7 and 0.74. The decomposition of efficiency into pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency suggests policies and strategies should target upscaling the UAE's low-carbon hydrogen production capacity to expedite short-term and overall production efficiency. Data relative to the water services industry in Italy indicate that there is a serious infrastructure gap between the southern regions and isles and the rest of the country. In these geographical areas, water utilities are provided with substantial public grants from the central and local governments to support investments necessary to mitigate the infrastructure divide by increasing capacity and improve service quality. This paper implements a meta-frontier non-parametric approach based on a data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the efficiencies of 71 Italian water utilities, accounting for the differentiated contexts in which they operate. A short-term perspective was assumed to estimate efficiency, considering the production factors associated with the infrastructure assets as non-discretionary inputs in the specification of the meta-frontier model. The results showed that water utilities operating in the southern regions and isles suffer from an efficiency gap in comparison to those in the northern and central regions. The average efficiency gap was 9.7%, achieving 24.9% in the worst case. Moreover, a more in-depth analysis focusing on the water utilities in the southern regions and isles indicated that scale inefficiencies might be an important determinant of such an efficiency gap. Indeed, slightly more than 69% of the water utilities operated at increasing returns to scale. Evidence from this study raises concern about the appropriate structure of the Italian water service industry and, particularly, the optimal size of the utilities and the financial sustainability of water services in the southern regions and isles. In many countries, document and border procedures create trading barriers, thereby impairing economic growth. These can range from insufficient transshipment facilities to unsupportive institutional arrangements. To address this, countries have taken reforms to improve their procedures by introducing electronic documentation systems, strengthening border infrastructure, and enhancing customs procedures. However, the efficiency of the document and border procedures in each country remains unclear, as well as how new reforms can affect these. This study investigated the efficiency of document and border procedures in each country, defined as the trade volume and value per required cost, time, and documents in the trading procedures. The efficiencies were calculated through a data envelopment analysis with cross-sectional data from 2019 and a window analysis with panel data from 2014 to 2019. The study found a positive change in export procedure efficiency after all three types of reforms were instituted in a country, but a positive change in import efficiency only after the introduction of electronic documentation. In recent decades, waste generation has increased gradually because of the development of the quantity and size of businesses, together with the high growth rate of the population. However, in 2019, like other industries, the waste management industry was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in relation to aspects concentrated on strategy. Subsequently, appropriate waste management in all aspects of the community, specifically for waste management enterprises, was demanded. This research aims to assess the profitable efficiency, position, technical, and technological innovation and compare the global major waste management corporations by integrating the negative super-slacks-based measure model and the negative Malmquist model in data envelopment analysis. Various inputs and outputs are initially selected from nine waste management companies' financial statements from 2017 to 2020, including negative values, to attain their performance. The empirical results indicated that waste management companies' managers could make better investment or strategy decisions for superior performance. At the same time, collaborators from other sectors could find their potential partners in the waste management industry. In general, considering the efficiency, Veolia Environment (DMU3) and Heritage-Crystal Clean Company (DMU8) were the most efficient companies. Meanwhile, Covanta Holding (DMU2) and Republic Services Corporation (DMU5) required additional development to improve their performance. Parametric and non-parametric frontier applications are typical for measuring the efficiency and productivity of many healthcare units. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, hospital efficiency is the center of academic discussions and the most desired target for many public authorities under limited resources. Investigating the state of the art of such applications and methodologies in the healthcare sector, besides uncovering strategical managerial prospects, can expand the scientific knowledge on the fundamental differences among efficiency models, variables and applications, drag research attention to the most attractive and recurrent concepts, and broaden a discussion on the specific theoretical and empirical gaps still to be addressed in future research agendas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all regions in Indonesia have had negative economic growth. It also increased the poverty rate in the country. The government must allocate pro-growth and poverty reduction programs to maintain economic growth and simultaneously reduce poverty. This study aims to measure the relative efficiency of pro-growth poverty reduction spending of local governments in seven regions in Indonesia. This study compares the efficiency scores before and during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2015 to 2019 and 2020. The inputs are five types of government spending: education, health, economic, social protection, and infrastructure. The outputs are economic growth and poverty reduction. Data envelopment analysis with an output-oriented model and a return to scale variable approach is applied. The results show that the highest average local government efficiency score was in Kalimantan, with the lowest being in Sulawesi. The efficiency scores of local governments in the COVID-19 pandemic differ between regions: it remained stable in Kalimantan, increased in Java-Bali, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, and experienced a decline in Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua. The study concludes that economic growth and poverty reduction can simultaneously measure government efficiency. Logistics services aid import and export businesses located near ports in terms of ease and efficiency in the globalization era. Furthermore, economic growth and global import–export volumes immediately impact the port industry. This research aims to develop a two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model for measuring the performance efficiency of Vietnam's top 18 seaports. The DEA resampling technique is used to forecast future performance, and the DEA Malmquist model analyzes efficiency improvement. First, the forecast data for the next three years, from 2021 to 2023, were obtained by resampling Lucas weight prediction with the highest accuracy. The results indicate that 12 out of all ports achieved an average progressive production efficiency over the entire study period of 2018–2023. Further, most ports have advanced slightly in technological efficiency, indicating that the determinants of increased productivity are the technical efficiency change indexes. This work contributes to the body of knowledge by being the first to apply the resampling technique in conjunction with the Malmquist model to forecast performance efficiency in the domain of the seaport sector. Furthermore, the managerial implications serve as a beneficial reference for operation managers, policymakers, and researchers when comparing the operational efficacy of seaports to diverse logistical scenarios. In Spain, the water supply service is a municipal responsibility and in general is a sector without competitors. For this reason, an efficiency analysis attains greater significance. This study uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to estimate the efficiency of different urban water utilities. An extensive data search, where several variables such as the capital expenditure, the cost of material, or the labor have been recorded, has allowed evaluating the relative efficiency of the most important Spanish water distribution networks in using their resources. Furthermore, their sustainable efficiency has also been evaluated by including a variable representing the percentage of water losses. Results reveal the weaknesses of inefficient utilities and help to detect potential aspects that these companies should improve. For instance, there is an evident incorrect management of the costs of material by many urban water utilities, which does not happen with the labor. The European Union (EU) launched the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) in the 1970s. Currently, a large part of the CFP has been financed with the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (FEMP). This research aims to determine whether there is a high degree of homogeneity in the levels of efficiency achieved by the fishing projects financed by European Funds for the period 2014 to 2020. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology was adopted. The main results showed that there is a high degree of heterogeneity in the level of efficiency achieved by European countries during the analyzed period. Moreover, despite the fact that regional efficiency has been increasing during the years under study, territorial disparities persist over time. Since its emergence, the development of agriculture has always been closely related to changes in the natural environment. The productivity and development of agriculture largely depend on natural conditions and agriculture and has an important impact on the environment. The development of modern conventional agriculture has also led to a series of ecological, economic, and social problems that threaten human development and sustenance. China has historically been heavily reliant on agriculture and provides food and clothing for approximately 22% of the world's population while only accounting for 9% of the world's cultivated land and 6% of freshwater resources. Since the 21st century, the agricultural development of China has faced increasing resource and environmental constraints due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. Based on the perspective of efficiency evolution, data envelopment analysis (DEA) and spatial autocorrelation analysis (SAA) were used to test the environment adaptability efficiency within China's agricultural systems across 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, and explore its temporal and spatial evolution patterns and characteristics. Our study thus possesses both theoretical and practical significance. Furthermore, this study would enable the development of methods to assess China's agricultural systems, in addition to providing a theoretical basis and guidelines for the creation of sustainable agriculture development strategies both in China and in other countries and regions. The following are the main conclusions of this study: (1) from 2000 to 2018, the overall environmental adaptability efficiency within China's agricultural systems exhibited a gradual upward trend, achieving a transition from medium-level efficiency towards high-level efficiency, and the environmental adaptability of agricultural systems continued to increase. However, a certain gap remained between the level achieved and the DEA's level of effectiveness, and therefore additional efforts are required to close this gap. (2) The environmental adaptability efficiency within China's agricultural system showed a significant positive correlation in spatial distribution. Particularly, clear spatial aggregation characteristics were observed at the provincial level, which was also characterized by strong features of spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity. Moreover, the degree of spatial aggregation increased gradually over time. High-value areas were mainly located along the southeast coastal area, whereas low-value areas were primarily located in the inland areas of the northwest. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a popular and universal method for examining the efficiency with which decision-making units (DMUs) transform multiple inputs into multiple outputs. However, DEA has its limitations, one of them being its decreasing discriminatory power when the number of analyzed DMUs is insufficient or when there are too many variables (inputs/outputs) describing them. When resigning from any of the variables is impossible or undesired, or when the number of units cannot be increased, CI-DEA, a method proposed in this article, proves to be helpful. It consists of replacing the inputs and/or outputs of the studied DMUs with a smaller number of composite indicators. The aggregation of variables is not based on subjective decisions of the analyst, but depends solely on correlations that exist among variables. The construction of the CI-DEA model makes the interpretation of the results unambiguous and easy. The reliability of the results obtained with CI-DEA have been confirmed by extensive simulation studies performed under conditions of predetermined real-efficiency of DMUs. The usefulness of CI-DEA on real data has been demonstrated on the example of the efficiency assessment of the digitalization in the life of the Generation 50+ in 32 European countries. Nowadays, countries are more concerned with the improvement of effectiveness and efficiency in public sector activities in the perspective of frugal innovation. The problem centers around how to obtain more and better public service with the limitations of the public incomes and indebtedness in preserving environmental conditions. This paper empirically investigates the efficiency, technical efficiency, productivity, and the determinants factor of implementing sustainable development policy of the five major municipalities in North Cyprus by conducting DEA and Tobit analyses during the period from 2004 to 2018 quarterly. The empirical results show that the size of the economically active population of a city, lower expenditures, and grants result in a higher efficiency, whereas the independent revenue sources (grants) and the per capita expenditures of North Cypriot municipalities have a negative effect on the efficiency. The employment rate in the municipalities has a considerable negative effect on the efficiency score. The results of Tobit analysis also show that population has a positive impact which may increase the technical efficiency. Finally, the findings of this study demonstrated that implementing proper environmental programs not only improve the efficiency of local government but also help the ecological sustainability and the geographical location of the regional changes and barriers for sustainable initiatives by using proper waste mechanism, clean water technology, and solar lighting. This paper investigates how the financial and social efficiency of firms influence the extent of the voluntary disclosure of Non-Banking Financial Companies-Micro Financial Institutions (NBFCMFI). The study constructed an unweighted index of voluntary disclosure to estimate the level of voluntary disclosure of all of the included firms from the years 2015-2019. The financial and social efficiency, which is analogous to the technical efficiency of production theory and analyses both sustainability and outreach, respectively, was estimated using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The panel data analysis was completed, and a positive association of financial efficiency was estimated. The social efficiency was found to have no relationship to the voluntary disclosure level. This paper contributed to the literature by providing new determinants of voluntary disclosure. The study examines the econometric model and suggests that financially sustainable firms that utilize these resources well are more open to outsiders, while socially efficient firms are reluctant to voluntary disclosure, which also includes social activities, and consider this as a wasteful activity. The findings of this study are relevant to industry practitioners and regulators, who need to think upon the sustainability of this crucial sector by meeting the dual objectives of financial and social performance. This study is helpful to all stakeholders as well as for the government, who can use the results to design additional rules for the NBFC-MFI. The aim of this paper is to assess the efficiency of a set of 62 precious metal mutual funds (PMMFs) and to explain performance differences between funds using weighted additive data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Tobit regression, respectively. The contribution of this paper is twofold: to provide for the first-time metrics of the relative performance of PMMFs using a particular weighted additive model, namely the range-adjusted measure (RAM), and to explain the performance of the funds by the use of a Tobit model. Results do not suggest positive linkages between RAM-based and standard fund performance metrics (Sharpe ratio and Jensen's alpha). Moreover, for the sample inefficient funds the mean--variance performance hypothesis does not hold. This article examines the development of Greek systemic banks for the period 2003-2018, using data such as the ATM network and branches at a regional level. We test the impact of the ATM network and branches on the deposits of Greek commercial banks as well as the impact of local GDP on the regional banking efficiency. The analysis is carried out in two steps, (1) we use the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for efficiency analysis, and (2) we use panel regression models for regression analysis. The results show that branches that operate at small regions are less efficient than those of the larger regions. Furthermore, both the ATMs and the number of branches have a positive relationship with deposits. This means that banks must continue to operate branches and ATMs in Greece. Finally, we show that local GDP helps significantly in increasing regional banking efficiency. In innovation management, it is crucial to know the incentives or factors that, in many cases, provide the fundamental drivers of earnings, competitive advantage and the sustainable growth of businesses while also measuring their effectiveness. The study deals with the evaluation of the efficiency of investments in innovations utilizing constant returns to scale models of small- and medium-sized industrial enterprises in Slovakia. It is industrial production that includes enterprises that are the creators of new products, the appliers of the latest knowledge of science, and the creators of innovations. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of invested finances in the innovation of small- and medium-sized production enterprises in Slovakia, as it is a very demanding and neglected role in management. The method to assess the efficacy that was used is called Data Envelopment Analysis. CCR-I also CCR-O models were run, where it was essential to determine the inputs and outputs. The indicators R&D expenditures and employee training costs were selected based on a detailed analysis of articles with similar issues. The final sample contained 132 manufacturing enterprises within industrial production that were classified according to the official Slovak categorization because of their relevance. We assessed the effectiveness of food producers, beverage manufacturers, textile and clothing manufacturers, manufacturers of rubber plastic products, metal manufacturers, PC, electronic and optical equipment manufacturers, machine and equipment manufacturers, and furniture manufacturers to identify the enterprises that own earnings drivers caused by innovation. It was detected that the most efficient units in the industrial production are the rubber plastic products manufacturers. The least effective units were found in beverage and furniture manufacturers. This paper documents a new series two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) modeling framework for mutual fund performance evaluation in terms of operational and portfolio management efficiency that is implemented to a sample of precious metal mutual funds (PMMFs). In the first and second stage, one-input/one-output and multi-input/one-output settings are used, respectively. In the light of the results, the funds assessed are inefficient in both operational and portfolio management process and in particular, they seem to be more inefficiently operated. The operational management efficiency is correlated with portfolio management efficiency and, therefore, sample funds should give more emphasis on their operational policies to ensure their success in the industry. Production companies operate in a complex economic, technological, social and political environment. There are a number of factors contributing to a satisfactory market position, the most important one being a properly defined and implemented strategy. It needs, however, to be continuously monitored and, if necessary, modified. One of the elements subject to such evaluation is the efficiency of the production processes, which has become the genesis of this article. In response to the methods presented in the literature, a proposal using the logistic regression method for this purpose is presented. The dichotomous form of the dependent variable makes it possible to make such an evaluation in an unambiguous manner and to determine the significance and influence of selected factors on the result thereof. The banking industry is an essential financial intermediary, thus the efficient operation of banks is vital for economic development and social welfare. However, the 2008 global financial crisis triggered a reconsideration of the banking systems, as well as the role of government intervention. The literature has paid little attention to the banking industry in the Asia-Pacific region in the context of bank efficiency. This study employs double bootstrap data envelopment analysis to measure bank efficiency and examine the relationship between regulation, supervision, and state ownership in commercial banks in the Asia-Pacific region for the period 2005 to 2014. Our results indicate that excluding off-balance sheet activities in efficiency estimations lead to underestimating of the pure technical efficiency, while overestimating the scale efficiency of banks in the Asia-Pacific region. Cross-country comparisons reveal that Australian banks exhibit the highest levels of technical efficiency, while Indonesian banks exhibit the lowest average. Our bootstrap regression results suggest that bank regulation and supervision are positively related to bank technical efficiency, while state ownership is not significantly related to bank efficiency. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology is used in this study for a comparison of the dynamic efficiency of European countries over the last decade. Moreover, efficiency analysis is used to determine where resources are distributed efficiently and/or were used efficiently/inefficiently under factors of competitiveness extracted from factor analysis. DEA measures numerical grades of the efficiency of economic processes within evaluated countries and, therefore, it becomes a suitable tool for setting an efficient/inefficient position of each country. Most importantly, the DEA technique is applied to all (28) European Union (EU) countries to evaluate their technical and technological efficiency within the selected factors of competitiveness based on country competitiveness index in the 2000-2017 reference period. The main aim of the paper is to measure efficiency changes over the reference period and to analyze the level of productivity in individual countries based on the Malmquist productivity index (MPI). Empirical results confirm significant disparities among European countries and selected periods 2000-2007, 2008-2011, and 2012-2017. Finally, the study offers a comprehensive comparison and discussion of results obtained by MPI that indicate the EU countries in which policy-making authorities should aim to stimulate national development and provide more quality of life to the EU citizens.
