Creep is an essential aspect of the durability and longevity of concrete structures. Based on fractional-order viscoelastic theory, this study investigated a creep model for predicting the temperature-dependent creep behavior of concrete. The order of the proposed fractional-order creep model can intuitively reflect the evolution of the material characteristics between solids and fluids, which provides a quantitative way to directly reveal the influence of loading conditions on the temperature-dependent mechanical properties of concrete during creep. The effectiveness of the model was verified using the experimental data of lightweight expansive shale concrete under various temperature and stress conditions, and the comparison of the results with those of the model in the literature showed that the proposed model has good accuracy while maintaining simplicity. Further analysis of the fractional order showed that temperature, not stress level, is the key factor affecting the creep process of concrete. At the same temperature, the fractional order is almost a fixed value and increases with the increase in temperature, reflecting the gradual softening of the mechanical properties of concrete at higher temperature. Finally, a novel prediction formula containing the average fractional-order value at each temperature was established, and the creep deformation of concrete can be predicted only by changing the applied stress, which provides a simple and practical method for predicting the temperature-dependent creep behavior of concrete. This study evaluated the potential and environmental benefits of using oil shale residue as a replacement for fine aggregate in concrete through a series of experiments. Initially, the crushing value test confirmed the oil shale residue's value at 16.7%, meeting the load-bearing standards for fine aggregates, thus proving its viability as a complete substitute. Further, the oil shale residue was treated with a 60 mg/L concentration of Tween 80 and other surfactants for oil removal. The treated concrete specimens demonstrated excellent compressive performance and a dense internal structure. Building on this, the mechanical properties of the oil shale residue concrete were explored across different replacement ratios (from 40% to 100%), revealing an increase in compressive strength with higher replacement ratios. In the durability tests, compared to the JZ group, the oil shale residue concrete modified with desulfurization gypsum exhibited a 0.03% reduction in mass loss rate and a 10.13% reduction in relative moving elasticity modulus loss rate, particularly noticeable after 175 freeze–thaw cycles where specimens B1 to B4 exhibited no significant damage, highlighting its remarkable durability. Overall analysis indicated that using oil-removed oil shale residue as a substitute for fine aggregate in concrete, combined with desulfurization gypsum modification, not only enhances concrete performance but also significantly reduces the consumption of natural aggregates and environmental pollution, promoting resource utilization and sustainable development. The construction industry is a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions, primarily due to the extensive use of ordinary portland cement (OPC). In response to the urgent need for sustainable construction materials, calcium sulphoaluminate (CSA) cement has emerged as a promising alternative. CSA cement is renowned for its low carbon footprint, high early-age strength, and superior durability, making it an attractive option for reducing the environmental impact of construction activities. While CSA cement offers benefits in carbon emissions reduction, its susceptibility to carbonation presents challenges. Although the body of literature on CSA cement is rapidly expanding, its adoption rate remains low. This disparity may be attributed to several factors including the level of scientific contribution in terms of research focus and lack of comprehensive standards for various applications. As a result, the present study sets out to track the research trajectory within the CSA cement research landscape through a systematic literature review. The study employed the Prefer Reporting Item for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) framework to conduct a literature search on three prominent databases, and a thematic analysis was conducted to identify the knowledge gap for future exploration. The study revealed that while CSA concrete demonstrates superior early-age strength and environmental resistance, its susceptibility to carbonation can compromise structural integrity over time. Key mitigation strategies identified include the incorporation of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), use of corrosion inhibitors, and optimization of mix designs. The review also highlights the global distribution of research, with notable contributions from the USA, China, and Europe, emphasizing the collaborative effort in advancing CSA concrete technology. In recent years, with the development of the construction industry and the wide application of concrete materials, the demand for natural resources such as sand and gravel in China has continued to grow. The Xinjiang region is rich in natural desert sand resources due to its large desert area, which are inexpensive and easy to obtain, providing new possibilities for the production of concrete materials. The use of natural desert sand as concrete aggregate not only reduces the cost of construction but also contributes to the protection of the environment and the rational development and utilization of natural resources. However, poor particle gradation in natural desert sand leads to poor concrete properties. In this study, the Dinger–Funk equation was used to optimize the aggregate gradation of natural desert sand from Toksun, Xinjiang, and concrete specimens were prepared for mechanical properties and sulfate erosion resistance tests. The test results show that the four groups of aggregates optimized by the Dinger–Funk equation are better than the single gradation and natural gradation in terms of apparent density, bulk density, void ratio, mechanical properties, and durability of concrete. Where the distribution modulus n = 0.3 was the best, the compressive strength, splitting strength, and flexural strength were increased by 13.14%, 15.71%, and 11.08%, respectively, as compared to the natural gradation. After 90 sulfate erosion and dry–wet cycles, the mass change rate and relative dynamic elastic modulus of concrete specimens first increased and then decreased, and at the distribution modulus n = 0.3, the aggregate particles of 0.3–0.6 mm, 0.6–1.18 mm, and 1.18–2.36 mm accounted for 26.98%, 32.33%, and 40.69%, respectively, and the smallest of the mass change rates of durability was the best. It emphasizes the critical role of anti-sulfate erosion inhibitors in mitigating sulfate-induced damage, reducing water absorption, and inhibiting corrosive reactions. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) have become increasingly significant in real-world applications due to their superior strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and high stiffness. These properties make CFRP an ideal material for reinforcing concrete structures, particularly in scenarios where weight reduction is crucial, such as in bridges and high-rise buildings. The transformative potential of CFRP lies in its ability to enhance the durability and load-bearing capacity of concrete structures while minimizing maintenance costs and extending the lifespan of the infrastructure. This research explores the impact of reinforcing structural elements with advanced composite materials on the strength and durability of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. By integrating Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) reinforcements, we subjected both rectangular and T-section concrete beams to comprehensive three-point bending tests, revealing a substantial increase in flexural strength by 45% and crack resistance due to CFRP reinforcement. The study revealed that CFRP reinforcement increased the flexural strength of concrete beams by 45% and improved crack resistance significantly. Additionally, the load-bearing capacity of the beams was enhanced by 40% compared to unreinforced specimens. These improvements were validated through finite element simulations, which showed a close alignment with the experimental data. Furthermore, an innovative simulation study was conducted using a finely tuned finite element numerical model within the Abaqus calculation code. This model accurately replicated the laboratory specimens in terms of shape, dimensions, and loading conditions. The simulation results not only validated the experimental observations but also provided deeper insights into the stress distribution and failure mechanisms of the reinforced beams. Novel aspects of this study include the identification of specific failure patterns unique to CFRP-reinforced beams and the introduction of an enhanced interaction model that more accurately reflects the composite behavior under load. This paper comprehensively summarizes moisture transport, ion transport, and mechanical damage models applied to concrete under sulfate attack and drying–wetting cycles. It highlights the essential aspects and principles of each model, emphasizing their significance in understanding the movement of moisture and ions, as well as the resulting mechanical damage within the concrete during these degradation processes. The paper critically analyzes the assumptions made in each model, shedding light on their limitations and implications for prediction accuracy. Two primary challenges faced by current models under sulfate attack and drying–wetting cycles are identified: the limited consideration of the coupled effects of chemical and physical attacks from sulfate, and the unclear mechanism of the sulfate attacks. Future research directions are proposed, focusing on exploring the transport mechanism of sulfate ions under various driving forces and further clarifying the crystallization process and expansion damage mechanism in concrete pores. This experimental study is carried out in order to improve the properties of sulfate-attacked concrete. The concrete specimens were immersed in 15% Na2SO4 solution before being protected with a concrete repairing agent (CRA). The effects of sulfate corrosion time, the curing time after being attacked, and the concrete repairing agent on concrete were investigated. The experimental results indicate that the properties slightly increased after being attacked by sulfate for 60 days than for 30 days. However, they decreased after being attacked by sulfate for 90 days. CRA could effectively improve the properties of sulfate-attacked concrete. After being re-cured for 7 days, the properties of the sulfate-attacked concrete were significantly improved in comparison with those of the specimens taken out from the sulfate solution immediately. When the specimens were attacked for three months, the compressive strength of specimens coated with CRA was increased by 6.1%, 6.4%, and 6.4% compared to that of the specimens without CRA after being cured for 7 to 56 days, respectively. The carbonation depth of concrete specimens with CRA was reduced by 4.6%, 8.3%, and 4.9%, respectively. However, the chloride ion permeation coefficient of concrete with CRA decreased by 20.3%, 28.5%, and 28.7%, respectively, for the concrete immersed in sulfate for one month. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enhancing the durability and extending the service life of concrete are crucial for promoting its sustainable development. Applying surface coatings is the primary technical method used to improve concrete durability. In this study, based on the plasma thermal spraying technology, a thermal-sprayed, ceramic-based coating was prepared on a concrete surface and evaluated using the drawing method, X-ray diffraction scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), and frictional wear. Subsequently, performance tests were conducted. The test results showed that mullite powder was a suitable ceramic-based coating material. The coating had a good interfacial bonding ability with the concrete surface; moreover, the bonding site exhibited a chimeric state with an adhesion strength of 3.82 MPa. The wear rate of the coating material (0.02‰) is lower than that of the concrete matrix (0.06‰), resulting in improved surface wear resistance. SEM analysis reveals that the coating contains a considerable amount of amorphous or microcrystalline phases. The internal structure of the coating exhibits porous characteristics, with a total porosity of 10.35% and pore diameters predominantly ranging from 4 μm to 16 μm. At a distance of 80 μm from the coating site, the elements Al, O, and Si significantly contribute to the mullite components. Polypropylene fiber reinforcement is an effective method to enhance the durability of concrete structures. With the increasing public interest in the widespread use of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete (PFRC), the necessity of evaluating the mechanism of polypropylene fiber (PF) on the permeability of concrete has become prominent. This paper describes the influence of PF on the concrete permeability exposed to freeze-thaw cycles under compressive and tensile stress. The permeability of PFRC under compressive and tensile loads is accurately measured by a specialized permeability setup. The permeability of PFRC under compressive and tensile loads, the volume change of PFRC under compressive load, and the relationship between compressive stress levels at minimum permeability and minimum volume points of PFRC are discussed. The results indicate that the addition of PF adversely affects the permeability of concrete without freeze-thaw damage and cracks. However, it decreases the permeability of concrete specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles and cracking. Under compressive load, the permeability of PFRC initially decreases slowly and follows by a significant increase as the compressive stress level increases. This phenomenon correlates with the volume change of the specimen. The compressive stress level of the minimum permeability point and compressive stress level of the minimum volume point of PFRC exhibit a linear correlation, with a fitted proportional function parameter γ ≈ 0.98872. Under tensile load, the permeability of PFRC increases gradually with radial deformation and follows by a significant increase. The strain-permeability curves of PFRC under loading are studied and consist of two stages. In stage I, the permeability of PFRC gradually decreases with the increase of strain under compressive load, while the permeability increases with the increase of strain under tensile load. In stage II, under compressive load, the permeability of PFRC increases with the increase of freeze-thaw cycles, whereas under tensile load, the permeability gradually decreases with the increase of freeze-thaw cycles. The reduction of PF on the permeability of PFRC under tensile load is greater than that under compressive load. In future research, the relationship between strain and permeability of PFRC can be integrated with its constitutive relationship between stress and strain to provide a reference for the application of PF in the waterproofing of concrete structures. Rubber concrete has been applied to a certain extent in fatigue-resistant structures due to its good durability. Based on a cohesive model of rubber composed of a five-phase material containing mortar, aggregate, rubber, aggregate-mortar interfacial transition zone (ITZ), and rubber-mortar ITZ, this paper studies the influence of the cohesive parameters in the rubber-mortar ITZ on the fatigue problem of rubber concrete on the mesoscopic scale. As the weak part of cement-based composite materials, the ITZ has a great influence on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete, but the performance of the ITZ is difficult to test in macro experiments, resulting in difficulties in determining its simulation parameters. Based on the cohesive model with a rubber content of 5%, this study uses Monofactor analysis and the Plackett-Burman test to quickly and effectively determine the primary and secondary influences of the cohesive model parameters in the rubber-mortar ITZ; further, the response surface method is used to optimize the cohesive parameters in the rubber-mortar ITZ, and the numerical simulation results after optimizing the cohesive parameters are compared and analyzed with the simulation results before optimization. The results show that, under the setting of the optimized parameters, the simulation results of each item of the optimal cohesive model parameters in the rubber-mortar ITZ are in line with the reality and closer to the experimental data, and they are also applicable to rubber concrete models with different rubber dosing. Waste ceramic is produced from different sources and, if not reused, is often disposed of in landfills, contributing to the pressure on landfill capacity and potentially releasing toxins into the surrounding environment as ceramics break down over time. The waste can easily be crushed to the required sizes, which has interested many researchers. It has been used as a replacement for concrete constituents, including cement and aggregates. This offers a promising avenue for reducing the environmental impact and promoting sustainable construction practices by reducing the amount of energy consumed and resources required for concrete production, as well as the amount of waste being sent to landfills. This paper aims to provide a review of the use of waste ceramic in concrete. In essence, the paper is divided into several sections. The first section highlights the current environmental issues associated with concrete production and waste disposal. The second section deals with ceramics, its raw materials, production steps, and the different types of waste ceramic used in concrete. A literature review of the use of waste ceramic in concrete was included in the third section. Chloride corrosion is a key factor affecting the life of marine concrete, and surface chloride concentration is the main parameter for analyzing its durability. In this paper, we first introduce six erosion mechanism models for surface chloride ion concentration, reveal the convection effect in the diffusion behavior of chloride ions, and then introduce the corrosion mechanisms that occur in different marine exposure environments. On this basis, the analysis is carried out using empirical formulations and machine learning methods, which provides a clearer understanding of the research characteristics and differences between empirical formulas and emerging machine learning techniques. This paper summarizes the time-varying model and multifactor coupling model on the basis of empirical analysis. It is found that the exponential function and the reciprocal function are more consistent with the distribution law of chloride ion concentration, the multifactor model containing the time-varying law is the most effective, and the Chen model is the most reliable. Machine learning, as an emerging method, has been widely used in concrete durability research. It can make up for the shortcomings of the empirical formula method and solve the multifactor coupling problem of surface chloride ion concentration with strong prediction ability. In addition, the difficulty of data acquisition is also a major problem that restricts the development of machine learning and incorporating concrete maintenance conditions into machine learning is a future development direction. Through this study, researchers can systematically understand the characteristics and differences of different research methods and their respective models and choose appropriate techniques to explore the durability of concrete structures. Carbonation depth is essential to determine the durability and predict the remaining service life of concrete structures. This study proposes a multi-frequency Rayleigh wave approximation method (MFRWA) to evaluate carbonation depth by exploiting the frequency-dependent penetration depths of ultrasonic Rayleigh waves. A series of numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effective penetration depth of Rayleigh waves and the feasibility of the proposed MFRWA method on carbonation depth evaluation. Subsequently, the accelerated carbonation experiment is conducted to evaluate the carbonation depth using low-frequency and high-frequency Rayleigh waves, and the measured results from the Rayleigh wave method are compared with the ones from the phenolphthalein indicator and thermalgravimetric analysis (TGA) method. The results show that carbonation depth measured by Rayleigh wave method meets well with the one from TGA technique, demonstrating that the proposed method could provide a non-destructive and precise carbonation depth estimation. In engineering, concrete often develops cracks due to various reasons, which accelerate the erosion rate of chloride ions in concrete and consequently expedite the degradation of the mechanical properties of concrete structures. This study simplifies the four-phase model into a two-phase model using homogenization methods. Based on this, numerical simulations are employed to investigate the influences of dimensionless structural parameters and material parameters of cracks on the equivalent diffusion coefficient of cracked concrete, and a theoretical model for the equivalent diffusion coefficient of cracked concrete is established according to Fick's diffusion law. The research findings indicate that when cracks are positioned in the middle of the boundary through which chloride ions enter and exit the concrete, and the direction of the cracks is parallel to the diffusion direction of chloride ions; this scenario is the most detrimental to the durability of concrete. For n cracks (n ≥ 2), when they are parallel to the x-axis and symmetrical about the x-axis, and the spacing between cracks equals 1/n times the width of the concrete, this scenario is the most detrimental to the durability of concrete containing multiple cracks. Whether for a single crack or multiple cracks, when they are in the most unfavorable condition, the "parallel-then-series" theoretical model can accurately predict the equivalent diffusion coefficient of cracked concrete. Concrete, as one of the most widely applied materials in buildings, has high environmental impacts. Researchers are continually seeking solutions to mitigate these environmental issues while enhancing the mechanical strength and durability of concrete. However, there is a lack of studies on the effect of combining silica fume (SF) as pozzolanic materials and shape memory alloy (SMA) fibers on the mechanical properties of concrete. Moreover, there is very limited research on the influence of these materials on concrete mixtures after primary failure cracks using the secondary compressive strength test. In this research, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3% SMA and 5, 7.5, and 10% SF were applied and then subjected to compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, secondary compressive strength, and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests. According to the results, 10% SF is more economical, which increases the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength by 14%, 7%, and 10%, respectively. Also, using 0.3% SMA improves the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength by 2%, 5%, and 8%, respectively. Furthermore, SMA has the ability to reduce the secondary compressive strength compared to other samples, indicating the quality of this material in controlling stress after cracking. In practical engineering construction, differences in time intervals during concrete pouring arise due to issues in concrete quality control and construction procedures, thereby affecting the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. This study conducted compressive strength tests, splitting tensile strength tests, and natural immersion tests to investigate the influence of time intervals in layered pouring on the mechanical strength and chloride ion concentration distribution of staged pouring concrete. Additionally, the study elucidated the mechanism by which pouring interval time affects the mechanical properties and resistance to chloride ion erosion of staged pouring concrete at the microstructure level. The results indicate that compared to ordinary concrete specimens, the splitting tensile strength of staged pouring concrete demonstrates a continuous decrease with increasing pouring interval time. The most significant splitting tensile strength decrease occurred at a 24 h interval. The compressive strength of staged pouring concrete initially decreases and then increases with increasing pouring interval time. At a pouring interval time of 12 h, the compressive strength of staged pouring concrete decreased the most. Results from the natural immersion tests demonstrate that chloride ion concentrations at the bonding interface and on both sides of staged pouring concrete increase continuously with the extension of pouring interval time. The chloride ion concentration at the bonding interface is consistently higher than that on both sides, and the difference between them decreases with increasing diffusion depth. The chloride ion concentration difference ΔC was proposed to evaluate the influence of bonding interface performance on chloride ion concentration, which decreases to varying degrees with increasing depth. The findings of this study can provide guidance for the research on the mechanical properties and durability of staged pouring concrete in practical engineering construction, as well as for engineering protective measures. Concrete and Portland cement-based products are the most widely used materials in the construction industry. According to the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), 14 billion cubic meters of concrete are consumed worldwide every year. Knowledge of their properties is essential to ensure the quality of concrete products and structures. Knowing the evolution of certain parameters related to their durability makes it possible to prevent situations that affect compliance with quality requirements. Thanks to advances in IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, it is possible to know the evolution of these parameters in real time. The following work pursues the development and application of a prototype to monitor the setting time of concrete. This equipment provides real-time measurements, taking advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, allowing effective monitoring of the thermal behavior of concrete during its setting process. By measuring the temperature of the process and evaluating the resistance acquired during the setting time, we can correlate these two parameters, thus ensuring their correct evolution and allowing quick action to avoid future problems. For the development of this work, temperature measurements were made during the setting of 12 concrete specimens corresponding to four different mixtures (two types of cement with and without additives), assessed at three setting ages (28, 90, and 180 days). Through detailed experimental tests, the sensor was accurately and reliably validated, showing its ability to detect temperature changes, indicating the initial and final setting time. In addition, it was observed that the integration of the DS18B20 sensor does not compromise the structural properties of the concrete. The prototype's cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and easy installation make it a valuable tool for construction professionals, offering an innovative solution to ensure the quality and durability of the concrete. This review focuses on recent advances in concrete durability using graphene oxide (GO) as a nanomaterial additive, with a goal to fill the gap between concrete technology, chemical interactions, and concrete durability, whilst providing insights for the adaptation of GO as an additive in concrete construction. An overview of concrete durability applications, key durability failure mechanisms of concrete, transportation mechanisms, chemical reactions involved in compromising durability, and the chemical alterations within a concrete system are discussed to understand how they impact the overall durability of concrete. The existing literature on the durability and chemical resistance of GO-reinforced concrete and mortar was reviewed and summarized. The impacts of nano-additives on the durability of concrete and its mechanisms are thoroughly discussed, particularly focusing on GO as the primary nanomaterial and its impact on durability. Compaction quality significantly influences the strength and durability of concrete in structures. Under-compacting can retain entrapped air, reducing strength, while over-compacting can lead to segregation, creating local variances in strength distribution and modulus of elasticity in the concrete structure. This study examines the widely adopted concept that compaction is optimal when bubbles cease to emerge on the concrete surface. We recorded the surface activity of six comparable concrete specimens during the compaction process using a 4K video camera. Four specimens were compacted using a table vibrator and two with a poker vibrator. From the video frames, we isolated the bubbles for analysis, employing digital image processing techniques to distinguish newly risen bubbles per frame. It was found that the bubbles continuously rose to the surface in all specimens throughout the compaction process, suggesting a need for extended compaction, with some specimens showing a slow in the rate of the bubbles' emergence. However, upon examining the segregation levels, it was discovered that all the specimens were segregated, some severely, despite the continued bubble emergence. These findings undermine the reliability of using bubble emergence as a principle to stop compaction and support the need for developing online measurement tools for evaluating compaction quality. This study aims at the evaluation of different formulations of concrete made with calcined clays and limestone (LC3 cement) exposed to aggressive environments. The study includes the evaluation of fresh and hardened properties and a comprehensive evaluation of durability over 24 months. The inclusion of calcined clays in cement increases the specific surface area of the cements, and thus the water demand. However, the high reactivity of calcined clays compared to any other pozzolan, and the synergy that occurs with limestones, enables the use of cements with very low clinker content that achieve strengths similar to those of Portland. Comparisons of LC3 formulations with Portland cement and with concrete containing silica fume prove the superiority of calcined clays in terms of strength and durability. The best results are obtained with LC3-50 cement with 50% clinker produced through co-grinding. Results of concrete made with a blend of 70% Portland cement with 30% LC2 (60% calcined clay, 35% limestone, 5% gypsum, separate ground) are also promising. The hydraulic concrete in the alpine region is subjected to alternating actions of freeze–thaw (F) and abrasion (W) during operation, resulting in significant deterioration of concrete durability. In this paper, the water/binder ratio (W/B) was employed as the test variable, the working condition F group and W group were set as the control group, and the working condition F-W group was used as the test group. Fast-freezing and underwater methods are used for the alternating test. By measuring the mass loss, relative dynamic elastic modulus (RDEM), surface morphological characteristics, fractal dimension of concrete in each alternating cycle, and the evolution law of concrete performance under the alternating action of F and W was explored. The results show that compared with the control group, the alternating action will accelerate the mass loss of concrete, reduce the RDEM, and cause the deterioration of surface wear. The maximum increase in mass loss and RDEM of concrete is 1.92% and 20.11%, respectively. During this process, the fractal dimension of the concrete increases as the number of alternating cycles increases, but it still does not exceed the limit of 2.4. In addition, a relationship function between the fractal dimension and the mass loss rate, volume loss, was established. Research on the combined substitution of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) has already demonstrated that it might be one of the few viable options to produce low-carbon concrete at scale. This paper presents an experimental investigation on the performance and durability of rice husk ash (RHA) and calcined clay (CC) in ternary blended concrete exposed to chloride attacks under wet/dry cycles. Portland cement (PC) was replaced by RHA and CC up to 50% by weight to produce low-carbon concrete. Samples were subjected to wet/dry cycles in 3.5% NaCl water, with mineralogical composition and microstructure development before and after exposure analysed by TGA-DSC, MIP, XRD, and SEM. The durability of the concrete against wet/dry cycles was investigated in terms of compressive strength, water absorption, open porosity, density, thermal conductivity, and electrical resistivity. The results showed that concrete mixes with CC and RHA up to 60% exhibited an increase of 33% in compressive strength, followed by minimal changes in water absorption. While a decrease in electrical resistivity was measured in all samples with RHA and CC, increasing the CC content to 50% resulted in improved resistance to chloride penetration. Increasing the CC content resulted in a more refined microstructure, with an overall decrease in porosity of up to 32% compared to the control series. While RHA alone did not contribute to significant improvements after wet/dry cycles, the combined substitution of RHA and CC at SCM replacement levels of 60% showed an overall improvement in hardened properties and durability. Current regulatory documents and the scientific literature lack a theoretical framework and practical guidance for calculating centrifugally compacted reinforced concrete structures, taking into account the variatropy of their structure and the material's characteristics across the section. A problem related to this research lies in the need to form a systematized, theoretical, and practical knowledge base about variatropic concretes, the importance of which has been proven by various scientists without, to date, the creation of a unified scientific methodological base. The importance of this study is linked to the need for the world's construction projects and processes to transition to the most economically, materially, and resource-efficient types of building structures, which, of course, include structures made of variable-type concrete. This study's objective is to fill these scientific and engineering gaps. The purpose of this study was to systematize the existing knowledge base about the technology, structure formation, and properties of variatropic concrete, using an analytical review of previously conducted studies by ourselves and others, both in Russia and abroad. A theoretical justification for the formation of the structure of variatropic materials is presented. An analysis of the basic physical and mechanical properties of variatropic concretes is carried out and the features of their microstructures are considered. The main structures created using centrifugation technology are considered. Variatropic concrete has an increased amount of mechanical characteristics compared to traditional concrete, on average by up to 45%. Reinforced concrete is the most widely used material in the construction of building structures, being noted for its versatility and low cost. However, the durability of reinforced concrete structures can be compromised by the corrosion of steel re-bars, especially in the presence of chlorides. To address this challenge and promote sustainability, the use of corrosion inhibitors has been researched as a way to extend the lifespan of structures. This study assessed the effectiveness of using a commercial corrosion inhibitor on steel re-bars embedded in types of concrete with different chloride percentages, using electrochemical methods to measure the corrosion rate and potential. The results indicate that, in the absence of corrosion inhibitors, corrosion rates become unacceptable with chloride percentages equal to or higher than 0.8% by weight of cement. The application of inhibitors significantly reduced the corrosion rate, particularly at chloride percentages of 0.8% and 1.2%, maintaining the re-bars in a passive state or at moderate levels of corrosion. However, for chloride percentages higher than 1.6%, high levels of corrosion were observed, even in the presence of inhibitors. The findings suggest that the use of inhibitors can be an effective strategy in preventing corrosion in reinforced concrete structures, contributing to their structural integrity and long-term sustainability. The coal gangue coarse-aggregate content in ordinary concrete should not be too large. In order to further improve the utilization rate of coal gangue coarse aggregate, this study used the principle of "strong wrapped weak" to prepare high-performance concrete. This study considered four factors, namely, water–binder (W/B) ratios, non-spontaneous combustion coal gangue (NCCG) coarse-aggregate contents, fly ash–slag mass ratios, and silica fume coating to prepare high-performance concrete. The workability, mechanical, and durability properties were studied, and the changes in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of concrete before and after sulfate attack and freeze–thaw cycles were analyzed based on the SEM test. The life prediction of NCCG coarse-aggregate high-performance concrete was carried out based on the grey system GM(1,1) prediction model. The results show that the NCCG coarse-aggregate contents have the greatest effect on compressive strength, sulfate resistance, and frost resistance. The W/B ratio has the greatest effect on the anti-carbonization properties. Fly ash–slag mixing can obtain better durability. Considering the effect on the design service life of high-performance concrete, NCCG coarse aggregate is used to prepare high-performance concrete in North China, and the recommended content is 60%; in the Northwest and Northeast regions, the recommended content is 45%. The moisture content within the concrete pore network significantly influences the mechanical, thermal, and durability characteristics of concrete structures. This paper introduces a novel fully embedded wireless temperature and relative humidity sensor connected to an automatic acquisition system designed for continuous concrete monitoring. Relative humidity measurements from this new sensor are compared with those obtained by a commercial system based on the borehole method at different depths (2.5 and 4.0 cm) and exposure conditions (oven drying and humid chamber). The results allow for proving that both systems provide consistent internal relative humidity measurements aligned with the exposure conditions and highlight the capability of fully embedded wireless sensors as a practical and reliable alternative to the conventional borehole method. Additionally, the continuous monitoring of the wireless cast-in sensor exhibits reliability during unintended temperature fluctuations, emphasizing the effectiveness of permanently installed sensors in promptly detecting unintended curing variations in real time. Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBS) and silica fume (SF) are frequently utilized in gel materials to produce environmentally sustainable concrete. The blend of the two components contributes to an enhancement in the pore structure, which, in turn, increases the mechanical strength of the material and the compactness of the pore structure and decreases the permeability, thereby improving the durability of the concrete. In this study, the pore structures of GGBS and SF blends are assessed using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) tests. These methodologies provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effect of GGBS and SF on the pore structure of cementitious materials. Results showed that the addition of SF and GGBS reduces the amount of micro-capillary pores (10 < d < 100 nm) and the total pore volume. The results indicate that the transport properties are related to the pore structure. The incorporation of SF reduced the permeability of the concrete by an order of magnitude. The pore distribution and pore composition had a significant effect on the gas permeability. The study explores the hypothesis that crystalline hydrophilic additives (CA) can enhance concrete's resistance to freeze/thaw cycles, crucial for assessing building durability. Employing EU standards, the research evaluates concrete resistance through standardized European freeze/thaw procedures. Monitoring concrete slabs exposed to freezing in the presence of deionized water and in the presence of 3% sodium chloride solution, the study measures surface damage and relative dynamic modulus of elasticity. Additionally, it assesses internal damage through monitoring of relative dynamic modulus of elasticity on cubes and prisms submerged in water and exposed to freezing/thawing. The pore spacing factor measured here aids in predicting concrete behavior in freeze/thaw conditions. Results suggest that the standard air-entraining agent offers effective protection against surface and internal damage due to freeze/thaw cycles. However, the CA displays potential in enhancing resistance to freeze/thaw cycles, primarily in reducing internal damage at a 1% cement weight dosage. The widespread use of carpets in residential and commercial buildings and their relatively short life span result in large volumes of carpet being landfilled. A potential solution to this problem is the use of post-consumer carpet fibers in concrete. To this end, this paper systematically identifies the common fiber types in a typical post-consumer carpet fiber bale and evaluates their durability under exposure to varying levels of alkalinity. The tensile strengths and toughness of the fibers belonging to the nylon and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) families (the dominant fibers in most post-consumer carpets) are reduced by up to 50% following exposure to extreme alkalinity, the reasons for which are determined using spectroscopic and microscopic evaluations. The chloride ion transport resistance of concretes (~40 MPa strength) containing 2.5% carpet fibers by volume (~25 kg of fibers per cubic meter of concrete) is comparable to that of the control mixture, while mortar mixtures containing the same volume fraction of carpet fibers demonstrate negligible enhancement in expansion and loss of strength when exposed to 1 N NaOH. This study shows that moderate-strength concretes (~40 MPa) for conventional building and infrastructure applications can be proportioned using the chosen volume of carpet fibers without an appreciable loss of performance. Consideration of low volume fractions of carpet fibers in low-to-moderate-strength concretes thus provides a sustainable avenue for the use of these otherwise landfilled materials in construction applications. The use of waste as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in concrete is already widespread, with glass waste being an increasingly used option. The utilization of glass waste as a partial substitute for cement in small proportions has shown satisfactory outcomes. Nevertheless, substituting cement in high proportions requires further investigation. Experimental research was carried out on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete with the replacement of cement by glass powder (GP), at a high volume equal to 50%. Binder content (cement plus GP) varied from 300 to 500 kg/m3. The results are promising regarding the use of the high volume of GP in high-performance concretes. The specimens with 500 kg/m3 of binder (50% of which was GP-G250) achieved almost 55 MPa at 28 days. The specimen with the lowest resistance was G150, with 32 MPa. This result may be related to the high pozzolanic activity index of the used GP. The specimens with GP showed satisfactory performance regarding chloride migration, with diffusion coefficients always below those of the reference specimens. The G250 concrete showed a reduction of 58%. Regarding open porosity, concretes with 50% GP had a lower porosity than the reference concretes. The smallest reduction (21%) occurred in the G150 concrete. The reduction in porosity provided by the fineness of the GP may be the main cause of this high performance. Concerning capillary absorption, the GP concretes have a reduction that varies between 47% for G150 and 67% for G250. Reinforced concrete structure durability hinges on concrete permeability, which relies on the characteristics of the inner porous network. Harmful ions and gases can accelerate steel corrosion. Permeability-reducing admixtures (PRA), including crystalline admixtures (CA), are commonly used to mitigate this. This study examines a commercial CA's impact on durability-related aspects in concrete specimens. Two concrete mixtures with matching proportions were prepared: a reference mix and another mix with a commercial crystalline admixture. Several properties were studied, such as compressive strength, density, porosity, electrical resistivity, water absorption capacity, chloride diffusion, air permeability, and corrosion resistance. The studied admixture in concrete yields several positive outcomes such as a slight reduction in mixing water, a potential 6% increase in concrete's compressive strength and the development of a denser and less permeable structure with 3% lower porosity and water absorption than the reference mix. Electrical resistivity improves by 10%. Unidirectional chloride diffusion tests show no differences. Air permeability decreases by from 36% to 55%, and the water absorption rate diminishes by 23%. The admixture potentially reduces the scatter in corrosion initiation periods for steel reinforcements, delaying corrosion onset by around 60 days, although more extensive experiments are needed for definitive conclusions. Chloride transport within concrete is critical for the durability of reinforced concrete structures; however, its diffusion under the coupling action of temperature and humidity has not been fully comprehended. Therefore, in this work, the coupling effects of temperature, relative humidity, and mineral admixtures on chloride transport in concrete were investigated through experimental and numerical simulation work. The results show that the chloride diffusion coefficient decreases with the decreased temperature and growth of relative humidity; however, the chloride concentration on the concrete surface is increased with the growth of temperature and relative humidity. Moreover, compounding about 15% fly ash (FA) and 30% granulated ground blast furnace slag (GGBS) to replace the cement is the most beneficial for improving the antichloride capacity of concrete, considering also the strength. The article presents research results regarding the possibility of modifying pre-stressed concrete railway sleepers to improve their durability. The cracks that appear in these elements are one of the reasons for shortening the period of safe use. They do not have a significant impact on the load-bearing capacity of these elements, but on their durability. The resulting scratches become an easy way for the external environment to migrate inside the element, including the reinforcement area. Despite efforts to eliminate the possibility of cracking, this phenomenon still occurs in railway sleepers. In order to reduce the negative effects of cracking the cement matrix, a technology for modifying a prefabricated concrete element with resin-filled tubes towards its autonomous self-healing was developed and tested. The tests were divided into three stages, including laboratory tests carried out on cement mortar beams, semi-technical tests carried out on reinforced concrete beams, and industrial tests carried out on pre-stressed concrete and prefabricated railway sleepers. All research conducted on a laboratory and semi-technical scale, preceding the target stage, was intended to ultimately enable the development of tube application technology on an industrial scale while verifying the effectiveness of self-healing at the laboratory level. One fascinating concept for enhancing the durability and lifespan of concrete buildings involves the use of self-healing concrete. This study focuses on the effect of crystalline admixtures and coatings on various properties of self-healing concrete and provides a comparison with traditional concrete. Four different concrete mixtures were prepared to assess their effectiveness in bridging crack openings, their flexural and compressive strengths, and water absorption. Various testing methods, including destructive, semi-destructive, and non-destructive tests, were used in this research. The capacity of the mixes to repair themselves was assessed on the destroyed and semi-destroyed test specimens using crack-healing and microstructure testing. Additionally, all mixtures were also subjected to the slump cone test and air content test in order to investigate the characteristics of the concrete in its fresh state. The findings demonstrate that crystalline coating and admixture combinations have significant potential for healing concrete. The compressive and bending strengths of self-healing concrete mixtures were shown to be slightly higher compared to traditional concrete when the additive dose was increased. Self-healing concrete mixtures also exhibited much lower water absorption, a tightly packed and improved microstructure, and signs of healed gaps, all of which indicate greater durability. Silicate solutions can improve the durability of concrete conveniently and effectively. To horizontally compare the enhancement effects of different composite silicate solutions, three types of silicate surface treatment agents were prepared by using sodium silicate, potassium silicate, and lithium silicate as the main agents, along with urea, sodium polyacrylate, catalysts, and fluoro-carbon surfactants as the adjuvants. Furthermore, their effects on the durability of concrete were compared. The results showed that silicate surface treatment could reduce the content of Ca(OH)2, increase the content of hydrated calcium silicate (C-S-H), and improve the compactness and hydrophobicity of the hardened cement surface. Although the three surface treatments enhanced the durability of concrete, the effects differed based on the complexities and mixtures. The sodium silicate compounded with potassium silicate performed the best of all three, wherein the content of the C-S-H gel increased by 389.8%, the permeability decreased by 60.6%, the water contact angle improved to 83.5° and the chloride ion resistance and freeze–thaw resistance of concrete increased by 36.7% and 37.34%, respectively, compared with the control sample. Recycled coarse aggregate is processed through the second crushing, which causes some internal damage, resulting in its physical indicators being far worse than natural coarse aggregate; its durability is relatively poor, and in the northern region, the soil contains a large number of acidic salt ions from the erosion of concrete, resulting in a decline in its durability. In this test, concrete was made from the single and composite immersion of recycled coarse aggregate using 5% water glass and 8% silane solution and subjected to a rapid freeze–thaw test in water, 3.5% NaCl solution, and 5% Na2SO4 solution, followed by a capillary water absorption test. The study was conducted to test the durability of recycled concrete, establish the initial capillary water absorption prediction model under freeze–thaw in different media, and analyze the internal structure of the RAC group after freeze–thaw using SEM. The test results showed that the composite-modified water absorption decreased the most, which can effectively improve the durability of recycled concrete, and the chloride salt caused the greatest erosion of recycled concrete and had the least clear water. Reducing the environmental footprint of the construction industry in general and concrete in particular is essential. The addition of synthetic and natural fibers to concrete mixes at appropriate dosages enhances durability and strength and extends the lifespan of concrete infrastructures. This study reviews the geometric and mechanical properties of selected fibers such as steel, basalt, polypropylene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, glass, carbon, and natural fibers and their impact on concrete fresh, mechanical, and durability properties when combined in different configurations. The study focuses on the effect of blending fibers with concrete mixes that use alkali-activated binders based on recycled industrial byproducts such as slag and fly ash and thereby contribute to reduction of CO2 contribution through complete or partial replacement of Ordinary Portland cement (OPC). As a result, the effect of binder content, binder composition, alkaline activator concentration, and water-to-binder (w/b) ratio on fresh properties, mechanical strength, and durability of concrete with blended fibers is also evaluated in this study. The properties of fiber-reinforced concrete with alkali-activated binder and conventional OPC binders are compared. Fiber-reinforced concrete with alkali-activated binders that are based on industrial byproducts may represent sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete and offers competitive fresh and mechanical properties when fiber properties, fiber content, w/b ratio, binder type, and dosage are carefully considered in concrete mix design. The urgent requirement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during Portland cement production and to enhance the durability of concrete in destructive environments are essential reasons to seek other alternative materials like alkaline activated binders. In this study, the feasibility of producing durable alkali-activated slag-based concrete under deteriorative environmental conditions was studied using 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% of metakaolin (MK) and 0, 5, and 10% of silica fume (SF) instead of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and optimizing contents through the response surface method (RSM).To evaluate the performance of studied alkali-activated slag-based concrete in an aggressive environment, the permeability and the reduction in compressive strength of alkali-activated slag-based concrete under sulfuric acid attack have been investigated. In addition, the mass change of specimens after exposure was measured. The results indicate that replacing 40% of the slag with metakaolin and 10% with silica fume in alkali-activated concrete has reduced 9% and 34.9% of the compressive strength at 28 days, respectively. Also, increasing MK replacement up to 40% increased the water absorption to 27.8%, but 10% SF replacement reduced it to 17.7%. In addition, the alkali-activated slag-based concrete mass changes after 90 days of acid exposure were 2.3%, while the replacement of slag by 40% of MK and 10% of SF reduced this value to 1.14%. To ensure the safe operation of concrete structures of deep-burial storages, it is necessary to research the degradation mechanisms of such structures. Concrete carbonation is one of the key factors determining the service life of concrete structures. Existing methods for the concrete carbonation process research at various stages of the building structure life cycle make it possible to conduct model tests in the shortest possible time by simulating the operational factors influencing the corrosion process development. The authors carried out model tests of concrete of deep-burial storages using the method of accelerated concrete carbonation and by taking into account the effects of elevated temperatures. When exposed to elevated temperatures during carbonation, concrete samples exhibit a decrease in compressive strength in the first 56 days of testing by an average of 1.6 MPa. However, by the end of the tests (168 days), the strength of concrete samples at elevated temperatures is on average 4 MPa higher. The microstructure and carbonation dynamics were studied by XRD, TGA and SEM. Permeable concrete is an innovative type of concrete that provides a sustainable solution for stormwater management by allowing water to seep through and be filtered naturally. This study focuses on the preparation and performance investigation of an epoxy resin-based permeable concrete containing ceramsite. In this study, ceramsite, a lightweight aggregate, is used as a substitute for conventional aggregates in the concrete mixture. The epoxy resin is then added to improve the strength and durability of the concrete. A series of tests, including compressive strength, water permeability, and freeze-thaw resistance tests, are conducted to evaluate the performance of the epoxy resin-based permeable concrete. The results show that with an increasing epoxy resin binder–aggregate ratio, the compressive strength of the epoxy resin-based permeable concrete significantly increases while the permeability coefficient decreases. Different types of aggregates have varying effects on the compressive strength and permeability coefficient of epoxy resin-based permeable concrete, with high-strength clay ceramsite providing the highest compressive strength and lightweight ceramsite having the highest permeability coefficient. In addition, the discrete element simulation method effectively and feasibly determines the ultimate load and accurately simulates the compressive strength of the permeable cement-based mixture, consistent with the measured compressive strength. A quadratic polynomial regression analysis yielded an R2 value of around 0.93, showing a strong relationship between durability and freeze-thaw cycles. The causes of cracks in concrete are varied, and regardless of their origin, these cracks invariably have a detrimental impact on the durability of concrete structures and escalate their maintenance costs. This paper presents a comprehensive review of current knowledge regarding the methods of self-healing in concrete, ranging from autogenic and improved autogenic self-healing to the autonomous self-healing of concrete. Particular emphasis is placed on the methods of autonomous concrete self-healing: the bacterial healing method, the crystalline hydrophilic additives healing method, and the capsule-based self-healing method. The hypothesis is that applying these self-healing methods could potentially prevent damages or cracks in concrete caused by freeze–thaw cycles, thereby extending the lifespan of concrete structures. One of the paths to CO2 emissions reduction in the concrete industry is to use low-clinker cements, providing at the same time the performance of concrete that is adequate for application in concrete structures. This paper explores the impact of the clinker replacement with high amounts of limestone powder (21–70% in the powder phase) on concrete carbonation resistance. To quantify this impact, the empirical relationship between the carbonation resistance and the compressive strength of the high-volume limestone powder concrete (HVLPC) was established. For that purpose, the regression analysis was applied on the experimental results collected from the published research. The service life analysis based on the full probabilistic approach was performed using the fib Model Code 2010 prediction model and proposed empirical relationship. The first-order reliability method (FORM) was applied to solve the limit state function of reinforcement depassivation with a reliability index equal to 1.3. The obtained minimum concrete cover depths were 40–110% higher compared to those prescribed in the current European standard EN 1992-1-1:2004 for indicative strength classes. Based on the full probabilistic analysis, recommended cover depths are given for all carbonation exposure classes, commonly applied concrete strength classes, and service lives of 50 and 100 years. Concrete in saline or coastal settings exposed to freezing temperatures is frequently affected by coupling actions of sulfate assault and freeze–thaw degradation, reducing the service life of concrete structures significantly. This study conducted an accelerated freeze–thaw cycle test in pure water and Na2SO4 solution with a mass proportion of 5% to examine the coupling impact of sulfate freeze–thaw on the frost resistance of composite limestone powder (CLP) concrete. Combined with SEM and XRD methods, the performance degradation mechanisms of composite limestone powder (CLP) concrete in coupling sulfate freeze–thaw conditions were analyzed with a microscopic point of view. The findings demonstrated that limestone powder has a filling effect but the activity is low. When the content is 10~20%, the chemical response is higher than the physical response. The pozzolanic effect of fly ash and slag can improve the pore structure and improve the compactness of concrete. The "superposition effect" of limestone powder, fly ash, and slag can improve the frost resistance of CLP concrete. The scenario of salt freezing cycles has negative effects that are worse than those of water freezing cycles on the antifreeze performance of CLP concrete, including apparent morphology, mass loss, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength. Sulfate's activation effect boosts slag's activity effect, which significantly promotes the antifreeze performance of concrete subjected to salt frozen cycles over water frozen cycles. The freeze–thaw damage model of CLP concrete under coupling sulfate freeze–thaw is established through theorem analysis and experiment statistics, laying a theoretical framework for the popularization and use of this concrete. To address the issues of the brittleness, low tensile strength, insufficient bond strength, and reduced service life associated with ordinary cement concrete being used as a repair material, a water-based epoxy (WBE) and carbon-nanofiber-reinforced concrete composite repair material was designed, and the mechanical properties, bonding performance, and durability of the concrete modified using WBE and carbon fiber under various WBE contents were investigated and evaluated. In this paper, a self-emulsifying water-based epoxy curing agent with reactive, rigid, flexible, and water-soluble chains was obtained via chemical grafting, involving the incorporation of polyethylene glycol chain segments into epoxy resin molecules. The results demonstrated that a WBE has a contributing effect on improving the weak interfacial bond between the carbon fiber and concrete; moreover, the composite admixture of carbon fiber and WBE improves the mechanical properties and durability of concrete, in which the composite admixture of 1% carbon fiber and 10% WBE has the best performance. The flexural strength and chlorine ion permeability resistance of concrete were slightly reduced after more than 10% admixture, but bond strength, tensile strength, compressive strength, dry shrinkage resistance, and frost resistance were promoted. The addition of WBE significantly retards the cement hydration process while greatly improving the compactness and impermeability of the concrete. Furthermore, the combined effects of WBE and carbon fiber effectively prevented the generation and expansion of cracks. The interaction mechanism and microstructure evolution between the WBE, carbon fiber, and cement hydration were described by clarifying the mineral composition, organic–inorganic interactions, the evolution of the hydration products, and composite morphology at different scales. Carbon fiber and WBE exhibited synergistic effects on the tensile strength, ductility, and crack resistance of concrete. In the formed three-dimensional network structural system of concrete, the WBE formed an organic coating layer on the fiber surface and provided fiber protection as well as interfacial bonding reinforcement for the embedded cement particles. Wood waste bottom ash (WWBA) is a waste generated in power plants during the burning of forest residues to produce energy and heat. In 2019, approximately 19,800 tons of WWBA was generated only in Lithuania. WWBA is rarely recycled or reused and is mostly landfilled, which is both costly for the industry and unsustainable. This study presents a sustainable solution to replace a part of cement with WWBA at 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% by weight. Problems are also associated with the use of this material, as WWBA could have a relatively large surface area and a high water demand. For the evaluation of the possibilities of WWBA use for cementitious materials, the calorimetry test for the cement paste as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermography (TG, DTG), and porosity (MIP) for hardened cement paste with the results of physical and mechanical properties, and the freeze–thaw resistance of the concrete was measured and compared. It was found that WWBA with a large quantity of CO2 could be used as a microfiller with weak pozzolanic properties in the manufacture of cementitious materials. As a result, concrete containing 6% WWBA used to substitute cement has higher density, compressive strength at 28 days, and ultrasonic pulse velocity values. In terms of durability, it was verified that concrete modified with 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% WWBA had a freeze–thaw resistance level of F150. The results show that the use of WWBA to replace cement is a valuable sustainable option for the production of conventional concrete and has a positive effect on durability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concrete can be regarded as a composite material comprising aggregates, cement mortar, and an interfacial transition zone (ITZ) at the mesoscale. The mechanical properties and durability of concrete are influenced by the properties of these three phases. The establishment of a mesoscale model of concrete and the execution of numerical simulations constitute an efficacious research method. It is an efficacious method to research concrete by establishing the mesoscale model of concrete and executing numerical simulations. By this method, the influence of an aggregate shape on concrete performance can be studied. This paper presents a systematic review of mesoscale modeling methods for concrete, with a focus on three aspects: the aggregate modeling method, the collision detection algorithm, and the particle-packing algorithm. The principal processes, advantages, and disadvantages of various methods are discussed for each aspect. The paper concludes by highlighting current challenges in the mesoscale modeling of concrete. Concrete is the most commonly used construction material nowadays. With emerging cutting-edge technologies such as nanomaterials (graphene, carbon nanotubes, etc.), advanced sensing (fiber optics, computer tomography, etc.), and artificial intelligence, concrete can now achieve self-sensing, self-healing, and ultrahigh performance. The concept and functions of smart concrete have thus been partially realized. However, due to the wider application location (coastal areas, cold regions, offshore, and deep ocean scenarios) and changing climate (temperature increase, more CO2 emissions, higher moisture, etc.), durability monitoring (pH, ion penetration, carbonation, corrosion, etc.) becomes an essential component for smart concrete. Fiber optic sensors (FOS) have been widely explored in recent years for concrete durability monitoring due to their advantages of high sensitivity, immunity to harsh environments, small size, and superior sensitivity. The purpose of this review is to summarize FOS development and its application in concrete durability monitoring in recent years. The objectives of this study are to (1) introduce the working principle of FOS, including fiber Bragg grating (FBG), long-period fiber grating (LPFG), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), fluorescence-based sensors, and distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS); (2) compare the sensitivity, resolution, and application scenarios of each sensor; and (3) discuss the advantages and disadvantages of FOS in concrete durability monitoring. Concrete is a widely used construction material, demanding strict quality control to maintain its integrity. The durability and lifespan of concrete structures rely heavily, amongst other factors, on the characteristics of fresh and early age concrete, which are strongly dependent on the curing process. To ensure long-term durability, it is crucial to assess concrete properties throughout construction and verify compliance with design specifications. Currently, electrical resistivity-based sensors are available and used for quality control and monitoring, however, these sensors tend to be costly or only measure at a single location within the concrete cover. This study introduces a printed circuit board (PCB)-based array of electrodes capable of measuring concrete resistivity profiles across the concrete cover, from its fresh state to early age development. In this work, the feasibility of such resistivity PCB-sensors, novel for concrete, is evaluated under laboratory conditions. The sensors exhibit a promising performance in monitoring the efficiency of concrete curing under various conditions. Additionally, they successfully evaluate the effectiveness of internal curing (in our study, promoted by superabsorbent polymers) during the initial stages of hardening. This sensor array provides a valuable tool for monitoring the curing of concrete at early age, and showcases a preliminary solution that could be further developed to ensure long-term performance of concrete infrastructure. In contrast to the marine environment, coastal regions encompass substantial saline soils characterized by complex corrosive chemical compositions. This poses notable challenges to the durability of concrete structures erected in coastal dredger fill silty soil environments. This research undertook concrete chloride corrosion assessments in both a dredger fill silty soil environment and a simulated solution environment. The findings demonstrated a progressive escalation in the free chloride concentration within concrete specimens, as the exposure duration was extended from 60 to 120 d, and discernible convection zones were observed with depths ranging from 6 to 8 mm. The investigation revealed a diminishing trend in the apparent chloride diffusion coefficient, corresponding to the elongation of exposure time and the augmentation of burial depth. Paradoxically, the burial depth and exposure duration exhibited converse effects on the apparent surface chloride concentration. Empirical formulations were derived to express the apparent surface chloride concentrations and apparent chloride diffusion coefficients as dependent on the exposure time and burial depth variables. These models exhibited an excellent goodness of fit, reaching up to 0.96. Notably, concrete specimens interred at a depth of 0.0 m displayed a favorable likeness to the simulated solution environment throughout the 60 d exposure period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
