The construction sector in Greece has been developing radically in the field of building renovations. The foremost problem for projects in the building construction industry is producing an accurate and reliable cost estimate at the onset of construction. The artificial neural network (AΝΝ) approach, using data available at the early stages of the project, can help resolve or prevent any kind of difficulty that could make the successful completion of a building less likely. ANNs have been highly efficient in gaining results which could prevent the failure of building constructions projects. The ultimate goal is to highlight the usefulness of the adoption of ANNs models to predict the final cost of a building renovation project. Thus, construction companies could avoid financial failure, provided that the gap between cost prediction and final cost for renovation projects is minimized. This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN) approach for predicting renovation costs in Greek construction projects. The study, based on a comprehensive literature review and real renovation data from construction companies, employs IBM SPSS Statistics software to build, train, and test the ANN model. The model, which uses initial cost, estimated time, and initial demolition cost as inputs, is based on the radial basis function procedure. The model presents high performance with up to 2% sum of squares error and near zero relative error, demonstrating the ANN's effectiveness in estimating total renovation costs. This paper addresses the gap in the scientific literature regarding construction cost estimates for the construction of underground metro stations. It provides preliminary cost estimation models using linear regression for use by the Greek underground metro public transport authority for planning future extensions to the Athens and Thessaloniki networks. At the same time, it contributes to the body of knowledge by proposing material quantity prediction models and presents a two-stage preliminary cost estimation model for the construction of civil engineering works of underground metro stations. Stage one uses the construction cost budgets of six metro stations in Greece to develop a multilinear regression equation for the prediction of the overall cost for construction of civil engineering works; stage two provides estimates of material quantities using linear regression, key quantity ratios, and artificial neural networks. The data analyzed are from the prior measurements of quantities for the construction of the Chaidari to Piraeus extension of the Athens Metro Line 3. After comparing the actual values of costs and quantities with the corresponding predictions, acceptable discrepancies are observed. Featured Application: Early diagnosis and warning mechanisms are essential in every health condition. The research described in this paper can provide the means for the development of medical assistance applications. The correlation between the kind of cesarean section and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Greek women after a traumatic birth experience has been recognized in previous studies along with other risk factors, such as perinatal conditions and traumatic life events. Data from early studies have suggested some possible links between some vulnerable factors and the potential development of postpartum PTSD. The classification of each case in three possible states (PTSD, profile PTSD, and free of symptoms) is typically performed using the guidelines and the metrics of the version V of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) which requires the completion of several questionnaires during the postpartum period. The motivation in the present work is the need for a model that can detect possible PTSD cases using a minimum amount of information and produce an early diagnosis. The early PTSD diagnosis is critical since it allows the medical personnel to take the proper measures as soon as possible. Our sample consists of 469 women who underwent emergent or elective cesarean delivery in a university hospital in Greece. The methodology which is followed is the application of random decision forests (RDF) to detect the most suitable and easily accessible information which is then used by an artificial neural network (ANN) for the classification. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of ionospheric total electron content (TEC), a combined intelligent prediction model (MMAdapGA-BP-NN) based on a multi-mutation, multi-cross adaptive genetic algorithm (MMAdapGA) and a back propagation neural network (BP-NN) was proposed. The model combines the international reference ionosphere (IRI), statistical machine learning (SML), BP-NN, and MMAdapGA. Compared with the IRI, SML-based, and other neural network models, MMAdapGA-BP-NN has higher accuracy and a more stable prediction effect. Taking the Athens station in Greece as an example, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of MMAdapGA-BP-NN in 2015 and 2020 are 2.84TECU and 0.85TECU, respectively, 52.27% and 72.13% lower than the IRI model. Compared with the single neural network model, the MMAdapGA-BP-NN model reduced RMSE by 28.82% and 24.11% in 2015 and 2020, respectively. Furthermore, compared with the neural network optimized by a single mutation genetic algorithm, MMAdapGA-BP-NN has fewer iterations ranging from 10 to 30. The results show that the prediction effect and stability of the proposed model have obvious advantages. Ensuring sea surface tranquility within port basins is of paramount importance for safe and efficient port operations and vessels' accommodation. The present study aims to introduce a robust numerical model based on mild-slope equations, capable of accurately simulating wave disturbance and resonance in ports. The model is further enhanced by the integration of an artificial neural network (ANN) to address partial reflection, and its efficiency is optimized by developing a parallel algorithm based on OpenMP, allowing for a reduction in the required simulation times for real port areas spanning several kilometers horizontally. Numerous numerical experiments focusing on wave reflection against a vertical wall were conducted to develop the ANN. This neural network was designed to determine the appropriate value of the eddy viscosity coefficient, a crucial parameter in the momentum equation of the mild-slope model, tailored to incident wave characteristics. The model's validity was confirmed through rigorous validation against experimental measurements, covering wave disturbance, rectangular harbor resonance, and Bragg resonance. The model consistently demonstrated a more than satisfactory performance across all considered scenarios. In a practical application, the model was deployed in the Port of Rethymno, Crete Island, Greece, effectively capturing and describing dominant phenomena within the port area. The implementation of a parallel algorithm significantly reduced the simulation times by ~92%, compared to the serial algorithm, thereby enhancing the model's efficiency and applicability in real-world port environments. This paper introduced a new ensemble learning approach, based on evolutionary fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs), artificial neural networks (ANNs), and their hybrid structure (FCM-ANN), for time series prediction. The main aim of time series forecasting is to obtain reasonably accurate forecasts of future data from analyzing records of data. In the paper, we proposed an ensemble-based forecast combination methodology as an alternative approach to forecasting methods for time series prediction. The ensemble learning technique combines various learning algorithms, including SOGA (structure optimization genetic algorithm)-based FCMs, RCGA (real coded genetic algorithm)-based FCMs, efficient and adaptive ANNs architectures, and a hybrid structure of FCM-ANN, recently proposed for time series forecasting. All ensemble algorithms execute according to the one-step prediction regime. The particular forecast combination approach was specifically selected due to the advanced features of each ensemble component, where the findings of this work evinced the effectiveness of this approach, in terms of prediction accuracy, when compared against other well-known, independent forecasting approaches, such as ANNs or FCMs, and the long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm as well. The suggested ensemble learning approach was applied to three distribution points that compose the natural gas grid of a Greek region. For the evaluation of the proposed approach, a real-time series dataset for natural gas prediction was used. We also provided a detailed discussion on the performance of the individual predictors, the ensemble predictors, and their combination through two well-known ensemble methods (the average and the error-based) that are characterized in the literature as particularly accurate and effective. The prediction results showed the efficacy of the proposed ensemble learning approach, and the comparative analysis demonstrated enough evidence that the approach could be used effectively to conduct forecasting based on multivariate time series. An integrated methodological approach to the development of a coastal flood early-warning system is presented in this paper to improve societal preparedness for coastal flood events. The approach consists of two frameworks, namely the Hindcast Framework and the Forecast Framework. The aim of the former is to implement a suite of high-credibility numerical models and validate them according to past flooding events, while the latter takes advantage of these validated models and runs a plethora of scenarios representing distinct sea-state events to train an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that is capable of predicting the impending coastal flood risks. The proposed approach was applied in the flood-prone coastal area of Rethymno in the Island of Crete in Greece. The performance of the developed ANN is good, given the complexity of the problem, accurately predicting the targeted coastal flood risks. It is capable of predicting such risks without requiring time-consuming numerical simulations; the ANN only requires the offshore wave characteristics (height, period and direction) and sea-water-level elevation, which can be obtained from open databases. Industrial automation uses robotics and software to operate equipment and procedures across industries. Many applications integrate IoT, machine learning, and other technologies to provide smart features that improve the user experience. The use of such technology offers businesses and people tremendous assistance in successfully achieving commercial and noncommercial requirements. Organizations are expected to automate industrial processes owing to the significant risk management and inefficiency of conventional processes. Hence, we developed an elaborative stepwise stacked artificial neural network (ESSANN) algorithm to greatly improve automation industries in controlling and monitoring the industrial environment. Initially, an industrial dataset provided by KLEEMANN Greece was used. The collected data were then preprocessed. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to extract features, and feature selection was based on least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). Subsequently, the ESSANN approach is proposed to improve automation industries. The performance of the proposed algorithm was also examined and compared with that of existing algorithms. The key factors compared with existing technologies are delay, network bandwidth, scalability, computation time, packet loss, operational cost, accuracy, precision, recall, and mean absolute error (MAE). Compared to traditional algorithms for industrial automation, our proposed techniques achieved high results, such as a delay of approximately 52%, network bandwidth accomplished at 97%, scalability attained at 96%, computation time acquired at 59 s, packet loss achieved at a minimum level of approximately 53%, an operational cost of approximately 59%, accuracy of 98%, precision of 98.95%, recall of 95.02%, and MAE of 80%. The aim of the study was to investigate the utility of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the estimation of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) on the Peloponnese Peninsula in Greece for two representative months of wintertime and summertime during 2016–2019 and to test if using fewer inputs could lead to satisfactory predictions. Datasets from sixty-two meteorological stations were employed. The available inputs were mean temperature (Tmean), sunshine (N), solar radiation (Rs), net radiation (Rn), vapour pressure deficit (es-ea), wind speed (u2) and altitude (Z). Nineteen Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) and Radial Basis Function (RBF) models were tested and compared against the corresponding FAO-56 Penman Monteith (FAO PM) estimates of a previous study, via statistical indices. The MLP1 7-2 model with all the variables as inputs outperformed the rest of the models (RMSE = 0.290 mm d−1, R2 = 98%). The results indicate that even ANNs with simple architecture can be very good predictive models of ETo for the Peloponnese, based on the literature standards. The MLP1 model determined Tmean, followed by u2, as the two most influential factors for ETo. Moreover, when one input was used (Tmean, Rn), RBFs slightly outperformed MLPs (RMSE < 0.385 mm d−1, R2 ≥ 96%), which means that even a sole-input ANN resulted in satisfactory predictions of ETo. The scope of the present study is the estimation of the concentration of nitrates (N O 3 −) in groundwater using artificial neural networks (ANNs) based on easily measurable in situ data. For the purpose of the current study, two feedforward neural networks were developed to determine whether including land use variables would improve the model results. In the first network, easily measurable field data were used, i.e., pH, electrical conductivity, water temperature, air temperature, and aquifer level. This model achieved a fairly good simulation based on the root mean squared error (RMSE in mg/L) and the Nash–Sutcliffe Model Efficiency (NSE) indicators (RMSE = 26.18, NSE = 0.54). In the second model, the percentages of different land uses in a radius of 1000 m from each well was included in an attempt to obtain a better description of nitrate transport in the aquifer system. When these variables were used, the performance of the model increased significantly (RMSE = 15.95, NSE = 0.70). For the development of the models, data from chemical and physical analyses of groundwater samples from wells located in the Kopaidian Plain and the wider area of the Asopos River Basin, both in Greece, were used. The simulation that the models achieved indicates that they are a potentially useful tools for the estimation of groundwater contamination by nitrates and may therefore constitute a basis for the development of groundwater management plans. Due to the fact of water resource deterioration from human activities and increased demand over the last few decades, optimization of management practices and policies is required, for which more reliable data are necessary. Cost and time are always of importance; therefore, methods that can provide low-cost data in a short period of time have been developed. In this study, the ability of an artificial neural network (ANN) and a multiple linear regression (MLR) model to predict the electrical conductivity of groundwater samples in the GallikosRiver basin, northern Greece, was examined. A total of 233 samples were collected over the years 2004--2005 from 89 sampling points. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation matrix, and factor analysis were applied to select the inputs of the water quality parameters. Input data to the ANN and MLR were Ca, Mg, Na, and Cl. The best results regarding the ANN were provided by a model that included one hidden layer of three neurons. The mean absolute percentage error, modeling efficiency, and root mean square error were used to evaluate the performances of the methods and to compare the prediction capabilities of the ANN and MLR. We concluded that the ANN and MLR models were valid and had similar accuracy (using the same inputs) with a large number of samples, but in the case of a smaller data set, the MLR showed a better performance. The main objective of the present study is to introduce a novel predictive model that combines evolutionary algorithms and machine learning (ML) models, so as to construct a landslide susceptibility map. Genetic algorithms (GA) are used as a feature selection method, whereas the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is used to optimize the structural parameters of two ML models, support vector machines (SVM) and artificial neural network (ANN). A well-defined spatial database, which included 335 landslides and twelve landslide-related variables (elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, curvature, plan curvature, profile curvature, topographic wetness index, stream power index, distance to faults, distance to river, lithology, and hydrological cover) are considered for the analysis, in the Achaia Regional Unit located in Northern Peloponnese, Greece. The outcome of the study illustrates that both ML models have an excellent performance, with the SVM model achieving the highest learning accuracy (0.977 area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value (AUC)), followed by the ANN model (0.969). However, the ANN model shows the highest prediction accuracy (0.800 AUC), followed by the SVM (0.750 AUC) model. Overall, the proposed ML models highlights the necessity of feature selection and tuning procedures via evolutionary optimization algorithms and that such approaches could be successfully used for landslide susceptibility mapping as an alternative investigation tool. Land cover type classification still remains an active research topic while new sensors and methods become available. Applications such as environmental monitoring, natural resource management, and change detection require more accurate, detailed, and constantly updated land-cover type mapping. These needs are fulfilled by newer sensors with high spatial and spectral resolution along with modern data processing algorithms. Sentinel-2 sensor provides data with high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution for the in classification of highly fragmented landscape. This study applies six traditional data classifiers and nine ensemble methods on multitemporal Sentinel-2 image datasets for identifying land cover types in the heterogeneous Mediterranean landscape of Lesvos Island, Greece. Support vector machine, random forest, artificial neural network, decision tree, linear discriminant analysis, and k-nearest neighbor classifiers are applied and compared with nine ensemble classifiers on the basis of different voting methods. kappa statistic, F1-score, and Matthews correlation coefficient metrics were used in the assembly of the voting methods. Support vector machine outperformed the base classifiers with kappa of 0.91. Support vector machine also outperformed the ensemble classifiers in an unseen dataset. Five voting methods performed better than the rest of the classifiers. A diversity study based on four different metrics revealed that an ensemble can be avoided if a base classifier shows an identifiable superiority.
