The new paradigms and latest developments in the Electrical Grid are based on the introduction of distributed intelligence at several stages of its physical layer, giving birth to concepts such as Smart Grids, Virtual Power Plants, microgrids, Smart Buildings and Smart Environments. Distributed Generation (DG) is a philosophy in which energy is no longer produced exclusively in huge centralized plants, but also in smaller premises which take advantage of local conditions in order to minimize transmission losses and optimize production and consumption. This represents a new opportunity for renewable energy, because small elements such as solar panels and wind turbines are expected to be scattered along the grid, feeding local installations or selling energy to the grid depending on their local generation/consumption conditions. The introduction of these highly dynamic elements will lead to a substantial change in the curves of demanded energy. The aim of this paper is to apply Short-Term Load Forecasting (STLF) in microgrid environments with curves and similar behaviours, using two different data sets: the first one packing electricity consumption information during four years and six months in a microgrid along with calendar data, while the second one will be just four months of the previous parameters along with the solar radiation from the site. For the first set of data different STLF models will be discussed, studying the effect of each variable, in order to identify the best one. That model will be employed with the second set of data, in order to make a comparison with a new model that takes into account the solar radiation, since the photovoltaic installations of the microgrid will cause the power demand to fluctuate depending on the solar radiation. This research presents a comparative analysis of wind speed forecasting methods applied to perform 1 h-ahead forecasting. The main significant development has been the introduction of low-quality measurements as exogenous information to improve these predictions. Eight prediction models have been assessed; three of these models [persistence, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and multiple linear regression] are used as references, and the remaining five, based on neural networks, are evaluated on the basis of two procedures. Firstly, four quality indices are assessed (the Pearson's correlation coefficient, the index of agreement, the mean absolute error and the mean squared error). Secondly, an analysis of variance test and multiple comparison procedure are conducted. The findings indicate that a backpropagation network with five neurons in the hidden layer is the best model obtained with respect to the reference models. The pair of improvements (mean absolute-mean squared error) obtained are 29.10%-56.54%, 28.15%-53.99% and 4.93%-14.38%, for the persistence, ARIMA and multiple linear regression models, respectively. As an indispensable ecological parameter, surface soil moisture (SSM) is of great significance for understanding the growth status of vegetation. The cooperative use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical data has the advantage of considering both vegetation and underlying soil scattering information, which is suitable for SSM monitoring of vegetation areas. The main purpose of this paper is to establish an inversion approach using Terra-SAR and Landsat-7 data to estimate SSM at three different stages of corn growth in the irrigated area. A combined scattering model that can adequately represent the scattering characteristics of the vegetation coverage area is proposed by modifying the water cloud model (WCM) to reduce the effect of vegetation on the total SAR backscattering. The backscattering from the underlying soil is expressed by an empirical model with good performance in X-band. The modified water cloud model (MWCM) as a function of normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI) considers the contribution of vegetation to the backscattering signal. An inversion technique based on artificial neural network (ANN) is used to invert the combined scattering model for SSM estimation. The inversion method is established and verified using datasets of three different growth stages of corn. Using the proposed method, we estimate the SSM with a correlation coefficient R ≥ 0.72 and root-mean-square error R M S E ≤ 0.043 cm 3 /cm 3 at the emergence stage, with R ≥ 0.87 and R M S E ≤ 0.046 cm 3 /cm 3 at the trefoil stage and with R ≥ 0.70 and R M S E ≤ 0.064 cm 3 /cm 3 at the jointing stage. The results suggest that the method proposed in this paper has operational potential in estimating SSM from Terra-SAR and Landsat-7 data at different stages of early corn growth. Double Skin Façade (DSF) systems have become an alternative to the environmental and energy savings issues. DSF offers thermal buffer areas that can provide benefits to the conditioned spaces in the form of improved comforts and energy savings. There are many studies conducted to resolve issues about the heat captured inside DSF. Various window control strategies and algorithms were introduced to minimize the heat gain of DSF in summer. However, the thermal condition of the DSF causes a time lag between the response time of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system and cooling loads of zones. This results in more cooling energy supply or sometimes less than required, making the conditioned zones either too cold or warm. It is necessary to operate the HVAC system in consideration of all conditions, i.e., DSF internal conditions and indoor environment, as well as proper DSF window controls. This paper proposes an optimal air supply control for a DSF office building located in a hot and humid climate. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based control was developed and tested for its effectiveness. Results show a 10.5% cooling energy reduction from the DSF building compared to the non-DSF building with the same HVAC control. The objective of this paper is to present a new approach to the problem of combustion engine efficiency characteristic development in dynamic working states. The artificial neural network (ANN) method was used to build a mathematical model of the engine comprising the following parameters: Engine speed, angular acceleration, engine torque, torque change intensity, and fuel mass flow, measured on a test bed on a spark ignition engine in static and dynamic working states. A detailed analysis of ANN design, data preparation, the training method, and the ANN model accuracy are described. The paper presents conducted calculations that clearly show the suitability of the approach in every aspect. Heavy-duty trucks contribute approximately 20% of fuel consumption in the United States of America (USA). The fuel economy of heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) is affected by several real-world parameters like road parameters, driver behavior, weather conditions, and vehicle parameters, etc. Although modern vehicles comply with emissions regulations, potential malfunction of the engine, regular wear and tear, or other factors could affect vehicle performance. Predicting fuel consumption per trip based on dynamic on-road data can help the automotive industry to reduce the cost and time for on-road testing. Data modeling can easily help to diagnose the reason behind fuel consumption with a knowledge of input parameters. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) was implemented to model fuel consumption in modern heavy-duty trucks for predicting the total and instantaneous fuel consumption of a trip based on very few key parameters, such as engine load (%), engine speed (rpm), and vehicle speed (km/h). Instantaneous fuel consumption data can help to predict patterns in fuel consumption for optimized fleet operations. In this work, the data used for modeling was collected at a frequency of 1Hz during on-road testing of modern heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) at the West Virginia University Center for Alternative Fuels Engines and Emissions (WVU CAFEE) using the portable emissions monitoring system (PEMS). The performance of the artificial neural network was evaluated using mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE). The model was further evaluated with data collected from a vehicle on-road trip. The study shows that artificial neural networks performed slightly better than other machine learning techniques such as linear regression (LR), and random forest (RF), with high R-squared (R2) and lower root mean square error. In the current study, our research group proposed an asymmetric lower extremity exoskeleton to enable above-knee amputees to walk with a load. Due to the absence of shank and foot, the knee and ankle joint at the amputation side of the exoskeleton lack tracking targets, so it is difficult to realize the function of assisted walking when going up and downstairs. Currently, the use of lower-limb electromyography to predict the angles of lower limb joints has achieved remarkable results. However, the prediction effect was poor when only using electromyography from the thigh. Therefore, this paper introduces hip-angle and plantar pressure signals for improving prediction effect and puts forward a joint prediction method of knee- and ankle-joint angles by electromyography of the thigh, hip-joint angle, and plantar pressure signals. The generalized regression neural network optimized by the golden section method is used to predict the joint angles. Finally, the parameters (the maximum error, the Root-Mean-Square error (RMSE), and correlation coefficient (γ)) were calculated to verify the feasibility of the prediction method. This paper discusses the capabilities of artificial neural networks (ANNs) when integrated with the finite element method (FEM) and utilized as prediction tools to predict the failure pressure of corroded pipelines. The use of conventional residual strength assessment methods has proven to produce predictions that are conservative, and this, in turn, costs companies by leading to premature maintenance and replacement. ANNs and FEM have proven to be strong failure pressure prediction tools, and they are being utilized to replace the time-consuming methods and conventional codes. FEM is widely used to evaluate the structural integrity of corroded pipelines, and the integration of ANNs into this process greatly reduces the time taken to obtain accurate results. Conventional pipeline corrosion assessment methods for failure pressure prediction do not account for interacting defects subjected to internal pressure and axial compressive stress. In any case, the failure pressure predictions are conservative. As such, numerical methods are required. This paper proposes an alternative to the computationally expensive numerical methods, specifically an empirical equation based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA). FEA was conducted to generate training data for an ANN after validating the method against full scale burst test results from past research. An ANN with four inputs and one output was developed. The equation was developed based on the weights and biases of an ANN model trained with failure pressure from the FEA of a high toughness pipeline for various defect spacings, defect depths, defect lengths, and axial compressive stresses. The proposed model was validated against actual burst test results for high toughness materials, with a R2 value of 0.99. Extensive parametric study was subsequently conducted to determine the effects of defect spacing, defect length, defect depth, and axial compressive stress on the failure pressure of the pipe. The paper introduces a numerical internal corrosion rate prediction method into the internal corrosion direct assessment (ICDA) process for wet gas gathering pipelines based on the back propagation (BP), the genetic algorithm (GA) and BP, and the particle swarm optimization and BP artificial neural networks (ANNs). The basic data were collected in accordance with the terms established by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers in the Wet Gas Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (WG-ICDA) SP0110, and the corrosion influencing factors, which are the input variables of the ANN model, are identified and refined by the grey relational analysis method. A total of 116 groups of basic data and inspection data from seven gathering pipelines in Sichuan (China) are used to develop the numerical prediction model. Ninety-five of the 116 groups of data are selected to train the neural network. The remaining 21 groups of data are chosen to test the three ANNs. The test results show that the GA and BP ANN yield the smallest number of absolute errors and should be selected as the preferred model for the prediction of corrosion rates. The accuracy of the model was validated by another 54 groups of excavation data obtained from pipeline No. 8, whose internal environment parameters are similar to those found in the training and testing pipelines. The results show that the numerical method yields significantly better absolute errors than either the de Waard 95 model or the Top-of-Line corrosion model in WG-ICDA when applying the approach to specific pipelines, and it can be used to investigate a specific pipeline for which the data have been collected and the ANN has been developed in WG-ICDA SP0110. Biologically-inspired models and algorithms are considered as promising sensor array signal processing methods for electronic noses. Feature selection is one of the most important issues for developing robust pattern recognition models in machine learning. This paper describes an investigation into the classification performance of a bionic olfactory model with the increase of the dimensions of input feature vector (outer factor) as well as its parallel channels (inner factor). The principal component analysis technique was applied for feature selection and dimension reduction. Two data sets of three classes of wine derived from different cultivars and five classes of green tea derived from five different provinces of China were used for experiments. In the former case the results showed that the average correct classification rate increased as more principal components were put in to feature vector. In the latter case the results showed that sufficient parallel channels should be reserved in the model to avoid pattern space crowding. We concluded that 6~8 channels of the model with principal component feature vector values of at least 90% cumulative variance is adequate for a classification task of 3~5 pattern classes considering the trade-off between time consumption and classification rate. This paper proposes a hybrid crop classifier for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The feature sets consisted of span image, the H/A/a decomposition, and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) based texture features. Then, the features were reduced by principle component analysis (PCA). Finally, a two-hidden-layer forward neural network (NN) was constructed and trained by adaptive chaotic particle swarm optimization (ACPSO). K-fold cross validation was employed to enhance generation. The experimental results on Flevoland sites demonstrate the superiority of ACPSO to back-propagation (BP), adaptive BP (ABP), momentum BP (MBP), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Resilient back-propagation (RPROP) methods. Most of classification, quality evaluation or grading of the flue-cured tobacco leaves are manually operated, which relies on the judgmental experience of experts, and inevitably limited by personal, physical and environmental factors. The classification and the quality evaluation are therefore subjective and experientially based. In this paper, an automatic classification method of tobacco leaves based on the digital image processing and the fuzzy sets theory is presented. A grading system based on image processing techniques was developed for automatically inspecting and grading flue-cured tobacco leaves. This system uses machine vision for the extraction and analysis of color, size, shape and surface texture. Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation provides a high level of confidence in decision making based on the fuzzy logic. The neural network is used to estimate and forecast the membership function of the features of tobacco leaves in the fuzzy sets. The experimental results of the two-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) show that the accuracy rate of classification is about 94% for the trained tobacco leaves, and the accuracy rate of the non-trained tobacco leaves is about 72%. Forecasting photovoltaic electricity generation is one of the key components to reducing the impacts of solar power natural variability, nurturing the penetration of renewable energy sources. Machine learning is a well-known method that relies on the principle that systems can learn from previously measured data, detecting patterns which are then used to predict future values of a target variable. These algorithms have been used successfully to predict incident solar irradiation, but the results depend on the specificities of the studied location due to the natural variability of the meteorological parameters. This paper presents an extensive comparison of the three ML algorithms most used worldwide for forecasting solar radiation, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), aiming at the best prediction of daily solar irradiance in a São Paulo context. The largest dataset in Brazil for meteorological parameters, containing measurements from 1933 to 2014, was used to train and compare the results of the algorithms. The results showed good approximation between measured and predicted global solar radiation for the three algorithms; however, for São Paulo, the SVM produced a lower Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE), and ELM, a faster training rate. Capability assessment plays a crucial role in the demonstration and construction of equipment. To improve the accuracy and stability of capability assessment, we study the neural network learning algorithms in the field of capability assessment and index sensitivity. Aiming at the problem of overfitting and parameter optimization in neural network learning, the paper proposes an improved machine learning algorithm—the Ensemble Learning Based on Policy Optimization Neural Networks (ELPONN) with the policy optimization and ensemble learning. This algorithm presents an optimized neural network learning algorithm through different strategies evolution, and builds an ensemble learning model of multi-intelligent algorithms to assess the capability and analyze the sensitivity of the indexes. Through the assessment of capabilities, the algorithm effectively avoids parameter optimization from entering the minimum point in performance to improve the accuracy of equipment capability assessment, which is significantly better than previous neural network assessment methods. The experimental results show that the mean relative error is 4.10%, which is better than BP, GABP, and early stopping. This paper describes an innovative machine learning (ML) model to predict the performance of different metal oxide photocatalysts on a wide range of contaminants. The molecular structures of metal oxide photocatalysts are encoded with a crystal graph convolution neural network (CGCNN). The structure of organic compounds is encoded via digital molecular fingerprints (MF). The encoded features of the photocatalysts and contaminants are input to an artificial neural network (ANN), named as CGCNN-MF-ANN model. The CGCNN-MF-ANN model has achieved a very good prediction of the photocatalytic degradation rate constants by different photocatalysts over a wide range of organic contaminants. The effects of the data training strategy on the ML model performance are compared. The effects of different factors on photocatalytic degradation performance are further evaluated by feature importance analyses. Examples are illustrated on the use of this novel ML model for optimal photocatalyst selection and for assessing other types of photocatalysts for different environmental applications. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has received growing attention and it has been used in a wide range of applications. However, the ML application in renewable energies systems such as fuel cells is still limited. In this paper, a prognostic framework based on artificial neural network (ANN) is designed to predict the performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system, aiming to investigate the effect of temperature and humidity on the stack characteristics and on tracking control improvements. A large part of the experimental database for various operating conditions has been used in the training operation to achieve an accurate model. Extensive tests with various ANN parameters such as number of neurons, number of hidden layers, selection of training dataset, etc., are performed to obtain the best fit in terms of prediction accuracy. The effect of temperature and humidity based on the predicted model are investigated and compared to the ones obtained from real-time experiments. The control design based on the predicted model is performed to keep the stack operating point at an adequate power stage with high-performance tracking. Volcanic ash clouds can damage aircrafts during flight and, thus, have the potential to disrupt air traffic on a large scale, making their detection and monitoring necessary. The new retrieval algorithm VACOS (Volcanic Ash Cloud properties Obtained from SEVIRI) using the geostationary instrument MSG/SEVIRI and artificial neural networks is introduced in a companion paper. It performs pixelwise classifications and retrieves (indirectly) the mass column concentration, the cloud top height and the effective particle radius. VACOS is comprehensively validated using simulated test data, CALIOP retrievals, lidar and in situ data from aircraft campaigns of the DLR and the FAAM, as well as volcanic ash transport and dispersion multi model multi source term ensemble predictions. Specifically, emissions of the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull (2010) and Puyehue-Cordón Caulle (2011) are considered. For ash loads larger than 0.2 g m−2 and a mass column concentration-based detection procedure, the different evaluations give probabilities of detection between 70% and more than 90% at false alarm rates of the order of 0.3–3%. For the simulated test data, the retrieval of the mass load has a mean absolute percentage error of ~40% or less for ash layers with an optical thickness at 10.8 μm of 0.1 (i.e., a mass load of about 0.3–0.7 g m−2, depending on the ash type) or more, the ash cloud top height has an error of up to 10% for ash layers above 5 km, and the effective radius has an error of up to 35% for radii of 0.6–6 μm. The retrieval error increases with decreasing ash cloud thickness and top height. VACOS is applicable even for overlaying meteorological clouds, for example, the mean absolute percentage error of the optical depth at 10.8 μm increases by only up to ~30%. Viewing zenith angles >60° increase the mean percentage error by up to ~20%. Desert surfaces are another source of error. Varying geometrical ash layer thicknesses and the occurrence of multiple layers can introduce an additional error of about 30% for the mass load and 5% for the cloud top height. For the CALIOP data, comparisons with its predecessor VADUGS (operationally used by the DWD) show that VACOS is more robust, with retrieval errors of mass load and ash cloud top height reduced by >10% and >50%, respectively. Using the model data indicates an increase in detection rate in the order of 30% and more. The reliability under a wide spectrum of atmospheric conditions and volcanic ash types make VACOS a suitable tool for scientific studies and air traffic applications related to volcanic ash clouds. Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), due to its high porosity and the residual cement and mortar on its surface, exhibits weaker strength than common concrete. To guarantee the safe use of RAC, a compressive strength prediction model based on artificial neural network (ANN) was built in this paper, which can be applied to predict the RAC compressive strength for 28 days. A data set containing 88 data points was obtained by relative tests with different mix proportion designs. The data set was used to develop an ANN, whose optimal structure was determined using the trial-and-error method by taking cement content (C), sand content (S), natural coarse aggregate content (NCA), recycled coarse aggregate content (RCA), water content (W), water–colloid ratio (WCR), sand content rate (SR), and replacement rate of recycled aggregate (RRCA) as input parameters. On the basis of different numbers of hidden layers, numbers of hidden layer neurons, and transfer functions, a total of 840 different back propagation neural network (BPNN) models were developed using MATLAB software, which were then sorted according to the correlation coefficient R2. In addition, the optimal BPNN structure was finally determined to be 8–12–8–1. For the training set, the correlation coefficient R2 = 0.97233 and RMSE = 2.01, and for the testing set, the correlation coefficient R2 = 0.96650 and RMSE = 2.42. The model prediction deviations of the two were both less than 15%, and the results show that the ANN achieved pretty accurate prediction on the compressive strength of RAC. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out, through which the impact of the input parameters on the predicted compressive strength of the RAC was obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to present the analysis and development of a complete electronic smart meter that is able to perform four-quadrant measurements, act as a three-phase shunt active power filter (APF), and control three-phase induction motors by stator flux estimation. A transmission control protocol together with Internet protocol (TCP/IP) communication protocol for the remote access of measurement data is embedded into the application to securely transmit reliable information. An artificial neural network trained with particle swarm optimization is used for stator flux estimation, and a fuzzy logic controller is adopted to regulate the power converter DC bus voltage. The present work gathers knowledge from multidisciplinary fields, and all applied techniques have not been proposed altogether before. All control functions are embedded into a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device, using VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL), to enhance efficiency taking advantage of parallelism and high speed. An FPGA-in-the-loop cosimulation technique was first applied to prove the control functions' functionality, and, later, experimental evaluations are conducted to finally prove equipment operation and reliability. Compared to the traditional activated sludge process, the membrane bioreactor (MBR) has several advantages such as the production of high-quality effluent, generation of low excess sludge, smaller footprint requirements, and ease of automatic control of processes. The MBR has a broader prospect of its applications in wastewater treatment and reuse. However, membrane fouling is the biggest obstacle for its wider application. This paper reviews the techniques available to predict fouling in MBR, discusses the problems associated with predicting fouling status using artificial neural networks and mathematical models, summarizes the current state of fouling prediction techniques, and looks into the trends in their development. Artificial neural network (ANN) inherently cannot explain in a comprehensible form how a given decision or output is generated, which limits its extensive use. Fuzzy rules are an intuitive and reasonable representation to be used for explanation, model checking, and system integration. However, different methods may extract different rules from the same ANN. Which one can deliver good quality such that the ANN can be accurately described by the extracted fuzzy rules? In this paper, we perform an empirical study on three different rule extraction methods. The first method extracts fuzzy rules from a fuzzy neural network, while the second and third ones are originally designed to extract crisp rules, which can be transformed into fuzzy rules directly, from a well-trained ANN. In detail, in the second method, the behavior of a neuron is approximated by (continuous) Boolean functions with respect to its direct input neurons, whereas in the third method, the relationship between a neuron and its direct input neurons is described by a decision tree. We evaluate the three methods on discrete, continuous, and hybrid data sets by comparing the rules generated from sample data directly. The results show that the first method cannot generate proper fuzzy rules on the three kinds of data sets, the second one can generate accurate rules on discrete data, while the third one can generate fuzzy rules for all data sets but cannot always guarantee the accuracy, especially for data sets with poor separability. The main objective of this paper is to describe a building process of a model predicting the soil strength at unpaved airport surfaces (unpaved runways, safety areas in runway proximity, runway strips, and runway end safety areas). The reason for building this model is to partially substitute frequent and meticulous inspections of an airport movement area comprising the bearing strength evaluation and provide an efficient tool to organize surface maintenance. Since the process of building such a model is complex for a physical model, it is anticipated that it might be addressed by a statistical model instead. Therefore, fuzzy logic (FL) and artificial neural network (ANN) capabilities are investigated and compared with linear regression function (LRF). Large data sets comprising the bearing strength and meteorological characteristics are applied to train the likely model variations to be subsequently compared with the application of standard statistical quantitative parameters. All the models prove that the inclusion of antecedent soil strength as an additional model input has an immense impact on the increase in model accuracy. Although the M7 model out of the ANN group displays the best performance, the M3 model is considered for practical implications being less complicated and having fewer inputs. Existing government air quality monitoring networks consist of static measurement stations, which are highly reliable and accurately measure a wide range of air pollutants, but they are very large, expensive and require significant amounts of maintenance. As a promising solution, low-cost sensors are being introduced as complementary, air quality monitoring stations. These sensors are, however, not reliable due to the lower accuracy, short life cycle and corresponding calibration issues. Recent studies have shown that low-cost sensors are affected by relative humidity and temperature. In this paper, we explore methods to additionally improve the calibration algorithms with the aim to increase the measurement accuracy considering the impact of temperature and humidity on the readings, by using machine learning. A detailed comparative analysis of linear regression, artificial neural network and random forest algorithms are presented, analyzing their performance on the measurements of CO, NO2 and PM10 particles, with promising results and an achieved R 2 of 0.93–0.97, 0.82–0.94 and 0.73–0.89 dependent on the observed period of the year, respectively, for each pollutant. A comprehensive analysis and recommendations on how low-cost sensors could be used as complementary monitoring stations to the reference ones, to increase spatial and temporal measurement resolution, is provided. Load forecasting plays a crucial role in the world of smart grids. It governs many aspects of the smart grid and smart meter, such as demand response, asset management, investment, and future direction. This paper proposes time-series forecasting for short-term load prediction to unveil the load forecast benefits through different statistical and mathematical models, such as artificial neural networks, auto-regression, and ARIMA. It targets the problem of excessive computational load when dealing with time-series data. It also presents a business case that is used to analyze different clusters to find underlying factors of load consumption and predict the behavior of customers based on different parameters. The feasibility and usefulness of frequency domain fusion of data from multiple vibration sensors installed on typical industrial rotating machines, based on coherent composite spectrum (CCS) as well as poly-coherent composite spectrum (pCCS) techniques, have been well-iterated by earlier studies. However, all previous endeavours have been limited to rotor faults, thereby raising questions about the proficiency of the approach for classifying faults related to other critical rotating machine components such as gearboxes. Besides the restriction in scope of the founding CCS and pCCS studies on rotor-related faults, their diagnosis approach was manually implemented, which could be unrealistic when faced with routine condition monitoring of multi-component industrial rotating machines, which often entails high-frequency sampling at multiple locations. In order to alleviate these challenges, this paper introduced an automated framework that encompassed feature generation through CCS, data dimensionality reduction through principal component analysis (PCA), and faults classification using artificial neural network (ANN). The outcomes of the automated approach are a set of visualised decision maps representing individually simulated scenarios, which simplifies and illustrates the decision rules of the faults characterisation framework. Additionally, the proposed approach minimises diagnosis-related downtime by allowing asset operators to easily identify anomalies at their incipient stages without necessarily possessing vibration monitoring expertise. Building upon the encouraging results obtained from the preceding part of this approach that was limited to well-known rotor-related faults, the proposed framework was significantly extended to include experimental and open-source gear fault data. The results show that in addition to early established rotor-related faults classification, the approach described here can also effectively and automatically classify gearbox faults, thereby improving the robustness. Currently, Lithium-ion batteries (LiB) are widely applied in energy storage devices in smart grids and electric vehicles. The state of charge (SOC) is an indication of the available battery capacity, and is one of the most important factors that should be monitored to optimize LiB's performance and improve its lifetime. However, because the SOC relies on many nonlinear factors, it is difficult to estimate accurately. This paper presented the design of an effective SOC estimation method for a LiB pack Battery Management System (BMS) based on Kalman Filter (KF) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). First, considering the configuration and specifications of the BMS and LiB pack, an ANN was constructed for the SOC estimation, and then the ANN was trained and tested using the Google TensorFlow open-source library. An SOC estimation model based on the extended KF (EKF) and a Thevenin battery model was developed. Then, we proposed a combined mode EKF-ANN that integrates the estimation of the EKF into the ANN. Both methods were evaluated through experiments conducted on a real LiB pack. As a result, the ANN and KF methods showed maximum errors of 2.6% and 2.8%, but the EKF-ANN method showed better performance with less than 1% error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dynamic phenomena in electric power systems require fast and accurate algorithms for processing signals. The processing results include synchrophasor parameters, e.g., varying amplitude, phase or frequency of sinusoidal voltage or current signals. This paper presents a novel estimation method of synchrophasor parameters that comply with the requirements of IEEE/IEC standards. The authors analyzed an algorithm for measuring the phasor magnitude by means of a selected artificial neural network (ANN), an algorithm for estimating the phasor phase and frequency that makes use of the zero-crossing method. The original components of the presented approach are: the method of the synchrophasor magnitude estimation by means of a suitably trained and applied radial basic function (RBF); the idea of using two algorithms operating simultaneously to estimate the synchrophasor magnitude, phase and frequency that apply identical calculation methods are different in that the first one filters the input signal using the FIR filter and the second one operates without any filter; and the algorithm calculating corrections of the phase shift between the input and output signal and the algorithm calculating corrections of the magnitude estimation. The error results obtained from the applied algorithms were compared with those of the quadrature filter method and the ones presented in literature, as well as with the permissible values of the errors. Concrete mix design and the determination of concrete performance are not merely engineering studies, but also mathematical and statistical endeavors. The study of concrete mechanical properties involves a myriad of factors, including, but not limited to, the amount of each constituent material and its proportion, the type and dosage of chemical additives, and the inclusion of different waste materials. The number of factors and combinations make it difficult, or outright impossible, to formulate an expression of concrete performance through sheer experimentation. Hence, design of experiment has become a part of studies, involving concrete with material addition or replacement. This paper reviewed common design of experimental methods, implemented by past studies, which looked into the analysis of concrete performance. Several analysis methods were employed to optimize data collection and data analysis, such as analysis of variance (ANOVA), regression, Taguchi method, Response Surface Methodology, and Artificial Neural Network. It can be concluded that the use of statistical analysis is helpful for concrete material research, and all the reviewed designs of experimental methods are helpful in simplifying the work and saving time, while providing accurate prediction of concrete mechanical performance. The direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) technique has been widely used in wireless secure communications. In this technique, the baseband signal is spread over a wider bandwidth using pseudo-random sequences to avoid interference or interception. In this paper, the authors propose methods to adaptively detect the DSSS signals based on knowledge-enhanced compressive measurements and artificial neural networks. Compared with the conventional non-compressive detection system, the compressive detection framework can achieve a reasonable balance between detection performance and sampling hardware cost. In contrast to the existing compressive sampling techniques, the proposed methods are shown to enable adaptive measurement kernel design with high efficiency. Through the theoretical analysis and the simulation results, the proposed adaptive compressive detection methods are also demonstrated to provide significantly enhanced detection performance efficiently, compared to their counterpart with the conventional random measurement kernels. This paper presents a novel diagonal recurrent neural network hybrid controller based on the shared memory of real-time database structure. The controller uses Data Engine (DE) technology, through the establishment of a unified and standardized software architecture and real-time database in different control stations, effectively solves many problems caused by technical standard, communication protocol, and programming language in actual industrial application: the advanced control algorithm and control system co-debugging difficulties, algorithm implementation and update inefficiency, and high development and operation and maintenance costs effectively fill the current technical gap. More importantly, the control algorithm development uses a unified visual graphics configuration programming environment, effectively solving the problem of integrated control of heterogeneous devices; and has the advantages of intuitive configuration and transparent data processing process, reducing the difficulty of the advanced control algorithms debugging in engineering applications. Energy performance certification is an important tool for the assessment and improvement of energy efficiency in buildings. In this context, estimating building energy demand also in a quick and reliable way, for different combinations of building features, is a key issue for architects and engineers who wish, for example, to benchmark the performance of a stock of buildings or optimise a refurbishment strategy. This paper proposes a methodology for (i) the automatic estimation of the building Primary Energy Demand for space heating ( P E D h ) and (ii) the characterization of the relationship between the P E D h value and the main building features reported by Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). The proposed methodology relies on a two-layer approach and was developed on a database of almost 90,000 EPCs of flats in the Piedmont region of Italy. First, the classification layer estimates the segment of energy demand for a flat. Then, the regression layer estimates the P E D h value for the same flat. A different regression model is built for each segment of energy demand. Four different machine learning algorithms (Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Artificial Neural Network) are used and compared in both layers. Compared to the current state-of-the-art, this paper brings a contribution in the use of data mining techniques for the asset rating of building performance, introducing a novel approach based on the use of independent data-driven models. Such configuration makes the methodology flexible and adaptable to different EPCs datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methodology can estimate the energy demand with reasonable errors, using a small set of building features. Moreover, the use of Decision Tree algorithm enables a concise interpretation of the quantitative rules used for the estimation of the energy demand. The methodology can be useful during both designing and refurbishment of buildings, to quickly estimate the expected building energy demand and set credible targets for improving performance. This paper presents a procedure to estimate the impacts on voltage harmonic distortion at a point of interest due to multiple nonlinear loads in the electrical network. Despite artificial neural networks (ANN) being a widely used technique for the solution of a large amount and variety of issues in electric power systems, including harmonics modeling, its utilization to establish relationships among the harmonic voltage at a point of interest in the electric grid and the corresponding harmonic currents generated by nonlinear loads was not found in the literature, thus this innovative procedure is considered in this article. A simultaneous measurement campaign must be carried out in all nonlinear loads and at the point of interest for data acquisition to train and test the ANN model. A sensitivity analysis is proposed to establish the percent contribution of load currents on the observed voltage distortion, which constitutes an original definition presented in this paper. Initially, alternative transient program (ATP) simulations are used to calculate harmonic voltages at points of interest in an industrial test system due to nonlinear loads whose harmonic currents are known. The resulting impacts on voltage harmonic distortions obtained by the ATP simulations are taken as reference values to compare with those obtained by using the proposed procedure based on ANN. By comparing ATP results with those obtained by the ANN model, it is observed that the proposed methodology is able to classify correctly the impact degree of nonlinear load currents on voltage harmonic distortions at points of interest, as proposed in this paper. This paper presents a novel approach to predicting self-calibration in a pressure sensor using a proposed Levenberg Marquardt Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (LMBP-ANN) model. The self-calibration algorithm should be able to fix major problems in the pressure sensor such as hysteresis, variation in gain and lack of linearity with high accuracy. The traditional calibration process for this kind of sensor is a time-consuming task because it is usually done through manual and repetitive identification. Furthermore, a traditional computational method is inadequate for solving the problem since it is extremely difficult to resolve the mathematical formula among multiple confounding pressure variables. Accordingly, this paper describes a new self-calibration methodology for nonlinear pressure sensors based on an LMBP-ANN model. The proposed method was achieved using a collected dataset from pressure sensors in real time. The load cell will be used as a reference for measuring the applied force. The proposed method was validated by comparing the output pressure of the trained network with the experimental target pressure (reference). This paper also shows that the proposed model exhibited a remarkable performance than traditional methods with a max mean square error of 0.17325 and an R-value over 0.99 for the total response of training, testing and validation. To verify the proposed model’s capability to build a self-calibration algorithm, the model was tested using an untrained input data set. As a result, the proposed LMBP-ANN model for self-calibration purposes is able to successfully predict the desired pressure over time, even the uncertain behaviour of the pressure sensors due to its material creep. This means that the proposed model overcomes the problems of hysteresis, variation in gain and lack of linearity over time. In return, this can be used to enhance the durability of the grasping mechanism, leading to a more robust and secure grasp for paralyzed hands. Despite extensive in-depth research into high calcium fly ash geopolymer concretes and a number of proposed methods to calculate the mix proportions, no universally applicable method to determine the mix proportions has been developed. This paper uses an artificial neural network (ANN) machine learning toolbox in a MATLAB programming environment together with a Bayesian regularization algorithm, the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a scaled conjugate gradient algorithm to attain a specified target compressive strength at 28 days. The relationship between the four key parameters, namely water/solid ratio, alkaline activator/binder ratio, Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio and NaOH molarity, and the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete is determined. The geopolymer concrete mix proportions based on the ANN algorithm model and contour plots developed were experimentally validated. Thus, the proposed method can be used to determine mix designs for high calcium fly ash geopolymer concrete in the range 25–45 MPa at 28 days. In addition, the design equations developed using the statistical regression model provide an insight to predict tensile strength and elastic modulus for a given compressive strength. Bead size and shape are important considerations for industry design and quality detection. It is hard to deduce an appropriate mathematical model for predicting the bead geometry in a continually changing welding process due to the complex interrelationship between different welding parameters and the actual bead. In this paper, an artificial neural network model for predicting the bead geometry with changing welding speed was developed. The experiment was performed by a welding robot in gas metal arc welding process. The welding speed was stochastically changed during the welding process. By transient response tests, it was indicated that the changing welding speed had a spatial influence on bead geometry, which ranged from 10 mm backward to 22 mm forward with certain welding parameters. For this study, the input parameters of model were the spatial welding speed sequence, and the output parameters were bead width and reinforcement. The bead geometry was recognized by polynomial fitting of the profile coordinates, as measured by a structured laser light sensor. The results showed that the model with the structure of 33-6-2 had achieved high accuracy in both the training dataset and test dataset, which were 99% and 96%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, an artificial neural network is applied for enhancing the resolution of images from an optical microscope based on a network trained with the images acquired from a scanning electron microscope. The resolution of microscopic images is important in various fields, especially for microfluidics because the measurements, such as the dimension of channels and cells, largely rely on visual information. The proposed method is experimentally validated with microfluidic structure. The images of structural edges from the optical microscope are blurred due to optical effects while the images from the scanning electron microscope are sharp and clear. Intensity profiles perpendicular to the edges and the corresponding edge positions determined by the scanning electron microscope images are plugged in a neural network as the input features and the output target, respectively. According to the results, the blurry edges of the microstructure in optical images can be successfully enhanced. The average error between the predicted channel position and ground truth is around 328 nanometers. The effects of the feature length are discussed. The objective of this paper is to develop a two-step predict and correct non-intrusive Parametric Model Order Reduction (PMOR) methodology for the problem of changing well locations in an oil field that can eventually be used for well placement optimization to gain significant computational savings. In this work, we propose a two-step PMOR procedure, where, in the first step, a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD)-based strategy that is non-intrusive to the simulator source code is introduced, as opposed to the convention of using POD as a simulator intrusive procedure. The non-intrusiveness of the proposed technique stems from formulating a novel Machine Learning (ML)-based framework used with POD. The features of the ML model (Random Forest was used here) are designed such that they take into consideration the temporal evolution of the state solutions and thereby avoid simulator access for the time dependency of the solutions. The proposed PMOR method is global, since a single reduced-order model can be used for all the well locations of interest in the reservoir. We address the major challenge of the explicit representation of the well location change as a parameter by introducing geometry-based features and flow diagnostics-inspired physics-based features. In the second step, an error correction model based on reduced model solutions is formulated to correct for discrepancies in the state solutions at well grid blocks expected from POD basis for new well locations. The error correction model proposed uses Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) that consider the physics-based reduced model solutions as features, and is proved to reduce the error in QoI (Quantities of Interest), such as oil production rates and water cut, significantly. This workflow is applied to a simple homogeneous reservoir and a heterogeneous channelized reservoir using a section of SPE10 model that showed promising results in terms of model accuracy. Speed-ups of about 50×–100× were observed for different cases considered when running the test scenarios. The proposed workflow for Reduced-Order Modeling is "non-intrusive" and hence can increase its applicability to any simulator used. Additionally, the method is formulated such that all the simulation time steps are independent and hence can make use of parallel resources very efficiently and also avoid stability issues that can result from error accumulation over time steps. Buildings in hot climate areas are responsible for high energy consumption due to high cooling load requirements which lead to high greenhouse gas emissions. In order to curtail the stress on the national grid and reduce the atmospheric emissions, it is of prime importance that buildings produce their own onsite electrical energy using renewable energy resources. Photovoltaic (PV) technology is the most favorable option to produce onsite electricity in buildings. Installation of PV modules on the roof of the buildings in hot climate areas has a twofold advantage of acting as a shading device for the roof to reduce the cooling energy requirement of the building while producing electricity. A high ground coverage ratio provides more shading, but it decreases the efficiency of the PV system because of self-shading of the PV modules. The aim of this paper was to determine the optimal value of the ground coverage ratio which gives maximum overall performance of the roof-mounted PV system by considering roof surface shading and self-shading of the parallel PV modules. An unsupervised artificial neural network approach was implemented for Net levelized cost of energy (Net-LCOE) optimization. The gradient decent learning rule was used to optimize the network connection weights and the optimal ground coverage ratio was obtained. The proposed optimized roof-mounted PV system was shown to have many distinct performance advantages over a typical ground-mounted PV configuration such as 2.9% better capacity factor, 15.9% more energy yield, 40% high performance ratio, 14.4% less LCOE, and 18.6% shorter payback period. Improving the accuracy of the slurry flow predictions in different operating flow regimes remains a major focus for multiphase flow research, and it is especially targeted at industrial applications such as oil and gas. In this paper we develop a robust integrated method consisting of an artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) to estimate the critical velocity, the slurry flow regime change, and ultimately, the frictional pressure drop for a solid–liquid slurry flow in a horizontal pipe, covering wide ranges of flow and geometrical parameters. Three distinct datasets were used to develop machine learning models with totals of 100, 325, and 125 data points for critical velocity, and frictional pressure drops for heterogeneous and bed-load regimes respectively. For each dataset, 80% of the data were used for training and the rest 20% for evaluating the out of sample performance. The K-fold technique was used for cross-validation. The prediction results of the developed integrated method showed that it significantly outperforms the widely used existing correlations and models in the literature. Additionally, the proposed integrated method with the average absolute relative error (AARE) of 0.084 outperformed the model developed without regime classification with the AARE of 0.155. The proposed integrated model not only offers reliable predictions over a wide range of operating conditions and different flow regimes for the first time, but also introduces a general framework of how to utilize prior physical knowledge to achieve more reliable performances from machine learning methods. Malware creators generate new malicious software samples by making minor changes in previously generated code, in order to reuse malicious code, as well as to go unnoticed from signature-based antivirus software. As a result, various families of variations of the same initial code exist today. Visualization of compiled executables for malware analysis has been proposed several years ago. Visualization can greatly assist malware classification and requires neither disassembly nor code execution. Moreover, new variations of known malware families are instantly detected, in contrast to traditional signature-based antivirus software. This paper addresses the problem of identifying variations of existing malware visualized as images. A new malware detection system based on a two-level Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is proposed. The classification is based on file and image features. The proposed system is tested on the 'Malimg' dataset consisting of the visual representation of well-known malware families. From this set some important image features are extracted. Based on these features, the ANN is trained. Then, this ANN is used to detect and classify other samples of the dataset. Malware families creating a confusion are classified by a second level of ANNs. Gait patterns are a result of the complex kinematics that enable human two-legged locomotion, and they can reveal a lot about a person's state and health. Analysing them is useful for researchers to get new insights into the course of diseases, and for physicians to track the progress after healing from injuries. When a person walks and is interfered with in any way, the resulting disturbance can show up and be found in the gait patterns. This paper describes an experimental setup for capturing gait patterns with a capacitive sensor floor, which can detect the time and position of foot contacts on the floor. With this setup, a dataset was recorded where 42 participants walked over a sensor floor in different modes, inter alia, normal pace, closed eyes, and dual-task. A recurrent neural network based on Long Short-Term Memory units was trained and evaluated for the classification task of recognising the walking mode solely from the floor sensor data. Furthermore, participants were asked to do the Unilateral Heel-Rise Test, and their gait was recorded before and after doing the test. Another neural network instance was trained to predict the number of repetitions participants were able to do on the test. As the results of the classification tasks turned out to be promising, the combination of this sensor floor and the recurrent neural network architecture seems like a good system for further investigation leading to applications in health and care. Differential evolution (DE) is a simple and efficient population-based stochastic algorithm for solving global numerical optimization problems. DE largely depends on algorithm parameter values and search strategy. Knowledge on how to tune the best values of these parameters is scarce. This paper aims to present a consistent methodology for tuning optimal parameters. At the heart of the methodology is the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) that learns to draw links between the algorithm performance and parameter values. To do so, first, a data-set is generated and normalized, then the ANN approach is performed, and finally, the best parameter values are extracted. The proposed method is evaluated on a set of 24 test problems from the Black-Box Optimization Benchmarking (BBOB) benchmark. Experimental results show that three distinct cases may arise with the application of this method. For each case, specifications about the procedure to follow are given. Finally, a comparison with four tuning rules is performed in order to verify and validate the proposed method's performance. In the past two decades, wind energy has been under fast development worldwide. The dramatic increase of wind power penetration in electricity production has posed a big challenge to grid integration due to the high uncertainty of wind power. Accurate real-time forecasts of wind farm power outputs can help to mitigate the problem. Among the various techniques developed for wind power forecasting, the hybridization of numerical weather prediction (NWP) and machine learning (ML) techniques such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) are attracting many researchers world-wide nowadays, because it has the potential to yield more accurate forecasts. In this paper, two hybrid NWP and ANN models for wind power forecasting over a highly complex terrain are proposed. The developed models have a fine temporal resolution and a sufficiently large prediction horizon (>6 h ahead). Model 1 directly forecasts the energy production of each wind turbine. Model 2 forecasts first the wind speed, then converts it to the power using a fitted power curve. Effects of various modeling options (selection of inputs, network structures, etc.) on the model performance are investigated. Performances of different models are evaluated based on four normalized error measures. Statistical results of model predictions are presented with discussions. Python was utilized for task automation and machine learning. The end result is a fully working library for wind power predictions and a set of tools for running the models in forecast mode. It is shown that the proposed models are able to yield accurate wind farm power forecasts at a site with high terrain and flow complexities. Especially, for Model 2, the normalized Mean Absolute Error and Root Mean Squared Error are obtained as 8.76% and 13.03%, respectively, lower than the errors reported by other models in the same category. Instrumental odour monitoring systems (IOMS) are intelligent electronic sensing tools for which the primary application is the generation of odour metrics that are indicators of odour as perceived by human observers. The quality of the odour sensor signal, the mathematical treatment of the acquired data, and the validation of the correlation of the odour metric are key topics to control in order to ensure a robust and reliable measurement. The research presents and discusses the use of different pattern recognition and feature extraction techniques in the elaboration and effectiveness of the odour classification monitoring model (OCMM). The effect of the rise, intermediate, and peak period from the original response curve, in collaboration with Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) as a pattern recognition algorithm, were investigated. Laboratory analyses were performed with real odour samples collected in a complex industrial plant, using an advanced smart IOMS. The results demonstrate the influence of the choice of method on the quality of the OCMM produced. The peak period in combination with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) highlighted the best combination on the basis of high classification rates. Reinforcement learning (RL) is a promising direction in automated parking systems (APSs), as integrating planning and tracking control using RL can potentially maximize the overall performance. However, commonly used model-free RL requires many interactions to achieve acceptable performance, and model-based RL in APS cannot continuously learn. In this paper, a data-efficient RL method is constructed to learn from data by use of a model-based method. The proposed method uses a truncated Monte Carlo tree search to evaluate parking states and select moves. Two artificial neural networks are trained to provide the search probability of each tree branch and the final reward for each state using self-trained data. The data efficiency is enhanced by weighting exploration with parking trajectory returns, an adaptive exploration scheme, and experience augmentation with imaginary rollouts. Without human demonstrations, a novel training pipeline is also used to train the initial action guidance network and the state value network. Compared with path planning and path-following methods, the proposed integrated method can flexibly co-ordinate the longitudinal and lateral motion to park a smaller parking space in one maneuver. Its adaptability to changes in the vehicle model is verified by joint Carsim and MATLAB simulation, demonstrating that the algorithm converges within a few iterations. Finally, experiments using a real vehicle platform are used to further verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The quick-response closed-loop control method is becoming an urgent demand for the combustion control of modern internal combustion engines. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and polynomial functions are used to predict the emission and engine performance based on seven parameters extracted from the in-cylinder pressure trace information of over 3000 cases. Based on the prediction model, the optimal combustion parameters are found with two different intelligent algorithms, including genetical algorithm and fish swarm algorithm. The results show that combination of quadratic function with genetical algorithm is able to obtain the appropriate combustion control parameters. Both engine emissions and thermal efficiency can be virtually predicted in a much faster way, such that enables a promising way to achieve fast and reliable closed-loop combustion control. Due to the growing public awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD), blood pressure (BP) estimation models have been developed based on physiological parameters extracted from both electrocardiograms (ECGs) and photoplethysmograms (PPGs). Still, in order to enhance the usability as well as reduce the sensor cost, researchers endeavor to establish a generalized BP estimation model using only PPG signals. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network model capable of extracting 32 features exclusively from PPG signals for BP estimation. The effectiveness and accuracy of our proposed model was evaluated by the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standard and the British Hypertension Society (BHS) standard. Experimental results showed that the RMSEs in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) are 4.643 mmHg and 3.307 mmHg, respectively, across 9000 subjects, with 80.63% of absolute errors among estimated SBP records lower than 5 mmHg and 90.19% of absolute errors among estimated DBP records lower than 5 mmHg. We demonstrated that our proposed model has remarkably high accuracy on the largest BP database found in the literature, which shows its effectiveness compared to some prior works. In this research paper, a hybrid Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) tuned Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) as a Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) is employed to amend root mean square error (RMSE) of photovoltaic (PV) modeling. Moreover, Gaussian membership functions have been considered for fuzzy controller design. This paper interprets the Luo converter occupied brushless DC motor (BLDC)-directed PV water pump application. Experimental responses certify the effectiveness of the suggested motor-pump system supporting diverse operating states. The Luo converter, a newly developed DC-DC converter, has high power density, better voltage gain transfer and superior output waveform and can track optimal power from PV modules. For BLDC speed control there is no extra circuitry, and phase current sensors are enforced for this scheme.
