Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process that occurs in the limited presence of oxygen. This process involves various difficulties during the operation, such as acidification and increased concentration of volatile fatty acids, which can inhibit methane production. Therefore, in this work, the impact of biochar on the co-digestion of untreated sludge and residual biomass under mesophilic conditions was studied. For the production of biochar, the gasification process was used at different temperatures: 759 °C (BL), 798 °C (BM), and 888 °C (BH). This biochar was added in concentrations of 0 g/L, 3.33 g/L, and 6.67 g/L at the beginning of the co-digestion process. The results showed that a concentration of 6.67 g/L with BH biochar increased the PBM by 18% compared to the control sample and reduced the chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 88%. In addition, there was a reduction of volatile fatty acids (VFA) of 42.75%. Furthermore, FTIR analysis demonstrated that biochar has appropriate functional groups for this process. These data suggest a good interaction of biochar with the mixture of sludge and municipal waste, indicating that biochar can improve the anaerobic co-digestion of untreated sludge and municipal waste. The use of microalgae as a raw material for biogas production is promising. Macroalgae were mixed with cattle manure, wheat straw, and an inoculant from sewage sludge. Mixing macroalgae with co-substrates increased biogas and methane yield. The research was carried out using a three-stage bioreactor. During biogas production, the dynamics of the composition of the microbiota in the anaerobic chamber of the bioreactor was evaluated. The microbiota composition at different organic load rates (OLRs) of the bioreactor was evaluated. This study also demonstrated that in a three-stage bioreactor, a higher yield of methane in biogas was obtained compared to a single-stage bioreactor. It was found that the most active functional pathway of methane biosynthesis is PWY-6969, which proceeds via the TCA cycle V (2-oxoglutarate synthase). Microbiota composition and methane yield depended on added volatile solids (VSadded). During the research, it was found that after reducing the ORL from 2.44 to 1.09 kg VS/d, the methane yield increased from 175.2 L CH4/kg VSadded to 323.5 L CH4/kg VSadded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anaerobic digestion is considered as one of the most feasible waste-to-energy technologies for the valorization of organic wastes. It can be applied to many different substrates but the mono-digestion of a single substrate usually has some important drawbacks due to the physico-chemical characteristics of the substrate. A feasible solution is the simultaneous co-digestion of several substrates with different composition and characteristics, so that synergetic effects may be generated and physico-chemical characteristics may be compensated, thus reaching higher process efficiencies and biogas production rates. In this work, a multi-parametric analysis for the objective comparison of industrial wastes was developed in order to help with decision making about their suitability as a co-substrate in anaerobic co-digestion. Criteria considered for this analysis included sample composition, C/N ratios, theoretical biochemical methane potential (BMP), and other important issues such as production rates, seasonality, and the distance to the WWTP or pre-treatment requirements. Results showed that, among the 13 evaluated wastes, 2 of them showed a higher potential for being used in anaerobic co-digestion: 1. Fried corn from the snack food industry and 2. Wet fatty pomace from the olive oil industry. Both wastes showed high estimated BMP values, high lipid and carbohydrate content, and C/N ratios in a proper range to improve the low C/N ratio of sewage sludge. Other wastes such as olive pomace (dry), skinless corn (not fried), and grape pomace from the winery industry may also be used as co-substrates. As a conclusion, this procedure based on a selection matrix can be considered as a useful tool to help both producers and WWTP operators to make decisions about the potential applicability of specific industrial wastes as co-substrates in anaerobic co-digestion. Anaerobic digestion is one of the technologies that will play a key role in the decarbonization of the economy, due to its capacity to treat organic waste, recover nutrients and simultaneously produce biogas as a renewable biofuel. This feature also makes this technology a relevant partner for approaching a circular economic model. However, the low biogas yield of traditional substrates such as sewage sludge and livestock waste along with high installation costs limit its profitability. Further expansion of this technology encounters several barriers, making it necessary to seek improvements to attain a favorable financial balance. The use of co-substrates benefits the overall digestion performance thanks to the balancing of nutrients, the enhanced conversion of organic matter and stabilization, leading to an increase in biogas production and process economics. This article reviews the main co-substrates used in anaerobic digestion, highlighting their characteristics in terms of methane production, kinetic models commonly used and the synergistic effects described in the literature. The main process parameters and their influence on digestion performance are presented, as well as the current lines of research dedicated to improving biogas yields, focusing on the addition of hydrogen, bioaugmentation, supplementation with carbon compounds and nanoparticles, the introduction of bioelectrodes and adsorbents. These techniques allow a significant increase in waste degradation and reduce inhibitory conditions, thus favoring process outcomes. Future research should focus on global process efficiency, making particular emphasis on the extrapolation of laboratory achievements into large-scale applications, by analyzing logistical issues, global energy demand and economic feasibility. In recent years, sewage sludge (SS) and bio-waste management have attracted increasing environmental attention. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology is investigated in the framework of a co-treatment of sewage sludge digestate (SSD) and an organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OW). The proposed configuration integrates HTC with anaerobic digestion (AD) in an inter-stage configuration (AD1 + HTC + AD2). The effects of different percentages of OW added to SSD in the HTC treatment are evaluated in terms of characteristics and methane yield of the produced HTC liquor (HTCL) and HTC slurry (i.e., the mixture hydrochar-HTCL), as well as dewaterability of the HTC slurry. Results show that, with the increase in the percentage of OW in the OW-SSD mixture fed to the HTC process, production of biogas and biomethane of both HTC slurry and HTCL increases. The highest biogas production is achieved when a mixture consisting of half SSD and half OW is used, reaching 160 ± 10 and 240 ± 15 mL biogas g−1 CODadded, respectively, for HTCL and HTC slurry. Furthermore, sludge dewaterability is significantly improved by the combined AD1-HTC-AD2 process. Finally, an energy assessment allows estimating that the co-treatment of OW with SSD in HTC can cover up to 100% of the energy consumption of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anaerobic digestion (AD) has become extremely popular in the last years to treat and valorize organic wastes both at laboratory and industrial scales, for a wide range of highly produced organic wastes: municipal wastes, wastewater sludge, manure, agrowastes, food industry residuals, etc. Although the principles of AD are well known, it is very important to highlight that knowing the biochemical composition of waste is crucial in order to know its anaerobic biodegradability, which makes an AD process economically feasible. In this paper, we review the main principles of AD, moving to the specific features of lignocellulosic wastes, especially regarding the pretreatments that can enhance the biogas production of such wastes. The main point to consider is that lignocellulosic wastes are present in any organic wastes, and sometimes are the major fraction. Therefore, improving their AD could cause a boost in the development in this technology. The conclusions are that there is no unique strategy to improve the anaerobic biodegradability of lignocellulosic wastes, but pretreatments and codigestion both have an important role on this issue. This study determined the optimal mixing ratio of food waste and livestock manure for efficient co-digestion of sewage sludge by applying the biochemical methane potential (BMP) test, Design Expert software, and continuous reactor operation. The BMP test of sewage sludge revealed a maximum methane yield of 334 mL CH4/g volatile solids (VS) at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 4 kg VS/(m3·d). For food waste, the maximum methane yield was 573 mL CH4/g VS at an OLR of 6 kg VS/(m3·d). Livestock manure showed the lowest methane yield. The BMP tests with various mixing ratios confirmed that a higher mixing ratio of food waste resulted in a higher methane yield, which showed improved biodegradability and an improved VS removal rate. The optimal mixing ratio of 2:1:1 for sewage sludge, food waste, and livestock manure was determined using Design Expert 10. Using continuous co-digestion reactor operation under an optimal mixing ratio, greater organic matter removal and methane yield was possible. The process stability of co-digestion of optimally mixed substrate was improved compared with that of operations with each substrate alone. Therefore, co-digestion could properly maintain the balance of each stage of anaerobic digestion reactions by complementing the characteristics of each substrate under a higher OLR. One of the possibilities to achieve energy neutrality of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is the implementation of the anaerobic co-digestion strategy. However, a key factor in its successful implementation on the technical scale is the application of components with complementary composition to sewage sludge (SS). In the 7resent study, the influence of adding various co-substrates on the energy balance of anaerobic digestion was evaluated. The following organic wastes were used as additional components to SS: organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and distillery spent wash (DW) applied in two- and three-component systems. The experiments were performed in semi-flow anaerobic reactors with the volume of 40 L under mesophilic conditions (35 °C) at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20, 18, and 16 d. The application of substrates to SS resulted in enhancements of methane yields as compared to SS mono-digestion. The statistically significant differences were observed in tertiary mixtures at both HRT of 18 and 16 d. Therein, average values were 0.20 and 0.23 m3 kg−1VSadd at HRT of 18 and 16 d, respectively. Among all co-digestion series, the most beneficial effect on energy balance was found in 20% v/v DW presence in both two- and three-component systems at HRT of 16 d. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sewage sludge (SS) generation and its management still pose a problem in many countries. Anaerobic co-digestion (AcD) of SS with grease trap sludge (GTS) and organic fraction of municipal sewage waste (OFMSW), which are two easily biodegradable substrates, may improve biogas production and AcD kinetics. Algae biomass (AB) of the species Undaria pinnatifida can be the third co-digestion component that may also affect the AcD performance. The aim of the study was therefore to evaluate the performance of mesophilic and thermophilic SS batch AcD with OFMSW, GTS as well as AB through biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay in relation to cumulative specific biogas (YB) and methane yields (Ym). Three kinetic models were applied within the scope of the kinetic study. Results of the study showed that the mixture containing SS, GTS and AB brought the most noticeable improvements in Ym compared to other studied mixtures and in respect to standalone SS digestion, the improvement amounted to 88.37% at mesophilic temperature (260.83 ± 15.02 N mL CH4/g-VSadd and for standalone SS 138.47 ± 4.70 N mL CH4/g-VSadd) and 71.09%, respectively, at the thermophilic one (275.66 ± 4.11 N mL-CH4/g-VSadd and for SS standalone 161.13 ± 13.11 N mL-CH4/g-VSadd). Wastewater and sewage sludge contain organic matter that can be valorized through conversion into energy and/or green chemicals. Moreover, resource recovery from these wastes has become the new focus of wastewater management, to develop more sustainable processes in a circular economy approach. The aim of this review was to analyze current sewage sludge management systems in Scandinavia with respect to resource recovery, in combination with other organic wastes. As anaerobic digestion (AD) was found to be the common sludge treatment approach in Scandinavia, different available organic municipal and industrial wastes were identified and compared, to evaluate the potential for expanding the resource recovery by anaerobic co-digestion. Additionally, a full-scale case study of co-digestion, as strategy for optimization of the anaerobic digestion treatment, was presented for each country, together with advanced biorefinery approaches to wastewater treatment and resource recovery. As a potential approach for enhanced energy generation from anaerobic digestion, iron-based conductive nanoparticles have been proposed to enhance the methane production yield and rate. In this study, the impact of two different types of iron nanoparticles, namely the nano-zero-valent-iron particles (NZVIs) and magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated, using batch test under mesophilic conditions (35 °C). Magnetite NPs have been applied in doses of 25, 50 and 80 mg/L, corresponding to 13.1, 26.2 and 41.9 mg magnetite NPs/gTS of substrate, respectively. The results reveal that supplementing anaerobic batches with magnetite NPs at a dose of 25 mg/L induces an insignificant effect on hydrolysis and methane production. However, incubation with 50 and 80 mg/L magnetite NPs have instigated comparable positive impact with hydrolysis percentages reaching approximately 95% compared to 63% attained in control batches, in addition to a 50% enhancement in methane production yield. A biodegradability percentage of 94% was achieved with magnetite NP doses of 50 and 80 mg/L, compared to only 62.7% obtained with control incubation. NZVIs were applied in doses of 20, 40 and 60 mg/L, corresponding to 10.8, 21.5 and 32.2 mg NZVIs/gTS of substrate, respectively. The results have shown that supplementing anaerobic batches with NZVIs revealed insignificant impact, most probably due to the agglomeration of NZVI particles and consequently the reduction in available surface area, making the applied doses insufficient for measurable effect.
