The phase reduction approach has manifested its efficacy in investigating synchronization behaviors in limit-cycle oscillators. However, spatial distributions of the phase value on the limit cycle may lead to illusions of synchronizations for oscillators close to bifurcations. In this paper, we compared the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain and time domain for oscillators close to saddle-node homoclinic (SNH) bifurcation, also known as saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle. It was found that the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain can show the phase accumulation feature on the limit cycle, which can be ignored in the phase sensitivity function in the time domain. As an example, the synchronization distributions of uncoupled SNH oscillators driven by common and independent noises were investigated, where the space-dependent coupling function was considered on common noise. Characterizing the brain's dynamic pattern of response to an input in electroencephalography (EEG) is not a trivial task due to the entanglement of the complex spontaneous brain activity. In this context, the brain's response can be defined as (1) the additional neural activity components generated after the input or (2) the changes in the ongoing spontaneous activities induced by the input. Moreover, the response can be manifested in multiple features. Three commonly studied examples of features are (1) transient temporal waveform, (2) time–frequency representation, and (3) phase dynamics. The most extensively used method of average event-related potentials (ERPs) captures the first one, while the latter two and other more complex features are attracting increasing attention. However, there has not been much work providing a systematic illustration and guidance for how to effectively exploit multifaceted features in neural cognitive research. Based on a visual oddball ERPs dataset with 200 participants, this work demonstrates how the information from the above-mentioned features are complementary to each other and how they can be integrated based on stereotypical neural-network-based machine learning approaches to better exploit neural dynamic information in basic and applied cognitive research. Fundamental understanding of micro-mechanical behaviors in bitumen, including phase separation, micro-friction, micro-abrasion, etc., can help the pavement engineers better understand the bitumen mechanical performances at macroscale. Recent researches show that the microstructure evolution in bitumen will directly affect its surface structure and micro-mechanical performance. In this study, the bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behaviors are studied using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) experiments, Phase Dynamics Theory and Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation. The AFM experiment results show that different phase-structure will occur at the surface of the bitumen samples under certain thermodynamic conditions at microscale. The phenomenon can be explained using the phase dynamics theory, where the effects of stability parameter and temperature on bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behavior are studied combined with MD Simulation. Simulation results show that the saturates phase, in contrast to the naphthene aromatics phase, plays a major role in bitumen micro-mechanical behavior. A high stress zone occurs at the interface between the saturates phase and the naphthene aromatics phase, which may form discontinuities that further affect the bitumen frictional performance. Featured Application: Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) and holographic microscopy (HM) are suitable methods for long-term and label-free imaging of cells and for the complex evaluation of cellular morphological and dynamical parameters under different treatments. Our results suggest that HM within advanced image analysis is capable of correctly distinguishing between subtle changes in cell motility, cell dry mass, cell density, and cell death induced by blue light. As quantitative phase dynamics of the cell population is typical for specific processes in cells, it may be useful for viability tests and medical drugs evaluation. In particular, mapping of the quantitative phase changes during the time seems to be very promising in the determination of various morphological phenomena related to cell death, because the responsible cell death molecular machinery typically changes the distribution of the cell mass. Increased exposition to blue light may induce many changes in cell behavior and significantly affect the critical characteristics of cells. Here we show that multimodal holographic microscopy (MHM) within advanced image analysis is capable of correctly distinguishing between changes in cell motility, cell dry mass, cell density, and cell death induced by blue light. We focused on the effect of blue light with a wavelength of 485 nm on morphological and dynamical parameters of four cell lines, malignant PC-3, A2780, G361 cell lines, and the benign PNT1A cell line. We used MHM with blue light doses 24 mJ/cm2, 208 mJ/cm2 and two kinds of expositions (500 and 1000 ms) to acquire real-time quantitative phase information about cellular parameters. It has been shown that specific doses of the blue light significantly influence cell motility, cell dry mass and cell density. These changes were often specific for the malignant status of tested cells. Blue light dose 208 mJ/cm2 × 1000 ms affected malignant cell motility but did not change the motility of benign cell line PNT1A. This light dose also significantly decreased proliferation activity in all tested cell lines but was not so deleterious for benign cell line PNT1A as for malignant cells. Light dose 208 mJ/cm2 × 1000 ms oppositely affected cell mass in A2780 and PC-3 cells and induced different types of cell death in A2780 and G361 cell lines. The Aharonov–Bohm effect can be described as a phase difference in interfering charged particles that travel through two distinct pathways oppositely surrounding a perpendicularly-positioned solenoid. The magnetic field emanates from the solenoid but does not intersect the pathways. On the other hand, the Kuramoto model can be used to identify the synchronization conditions that lead to a particular phase difference by treating the phases as coupled oscillators. Starting with the overall wave function expression for the electron in an Aharonov–Bohm potential, we derive a version of the Kuramoto model describing the phase dynamics of the bound state of the quantum mechanical system. We show that the resulting synchronization condition of the model coincides with the allowable values of the flux parameter for our case to achieve an Aharonov–Bohm effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the implementation of unconventional monetary policies (UMPs) by the US in response to the global financial crisis (GFC) and the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been increasing concerns that these forward guidance and quantitative easing programmes have had spillover effects on global equity markets. We specifically question whether the implementation of these UMPs have had spillovers to African equities, which have been previously speculated to be decoupled from global markets and shocks. Time-varying-parameter (TVP) frequency connectedness and wavelet coherency methods were used to examine the dynamic time-frequency spillovers between daily time series of the US shadow short rate and African equities returns/volatility between 1 January 2007 and 31 March 2023. On one hand, the TVP frequency connectedness analysis reveals robust long-run spillovers from US monetary policy to African equity markets during specific periods: 2009, 2013, 2020, and 2021. These coincide with instances when the Federal Reserve announced their transition from conventional to unconventional monetary practices and vice versa. On the other hand, the wavelet analysis provides insights into the 'sign' of the spillovers, indicating mixed phase dynamics during UMPs responding to the GFC. In contrast, anti-phase or negative co-movements characterize UMPs implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, implying that these policies increased both returns and volatilities to African equities. Altogether, we conclude that US UMP has increasing deteriorated market efficiency and amplified portfolio risk in African equities whilst during 'normalization' periods US monetary policy has little transmission effect. In this paper, an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with ultra-low phase noise and high stability based on the injection-locked and phase-locked loop is proposed. In theory, the injection-locked frequency range of the injection signal is studied based on the phase dynamics equation, and the phase noise performance of the injection-locked OEO is analyzed. The role of the phase-locked loop on the frequency stability of the OEO is analyzed based on the phase-locked loop transfer function. In addition, this paper builds an injection-locked OEO based on a phase-locked loop. The injection-locked signal is the high-frequency output of the multiplication crystal oscillator (MCO). At the same time, this MCO synchronously outputs a low-frequency signal, which is used as the reference signal of the phase-locked loop. The experimental results show that the proposed OEO output frequency is 10 GHz, and the phase noise is −89.25 dBc/Hz@100 Hz, −121.71 dBc/Hz@1 kHz, and −145.39 dBc/Hz@10 kHz; the side-mode suppression ratio is 80 dB; the frequency stability is 2.06 × 10 − 11 @1 s, 9.03 × 10 − 11 @10 s, 1.03 × 10 − 10 @100 s, and 3.03 × 10 − 10 @1000 s. Consistent with the theoretical analysis results, the solution takes into account the frequency stability, side-mode suppression ratio, and phase noise performance. Piezoelectric actuators (PEAs) are widely used in many nano-resolution manipulations. A PEA's hysteresis becomes the main factor limiting its motion accuracy. The distinctive feature of a PEA's hysteresis is the interdependence between the width of the hysteresis loop and the frequency or rate of the control voltage. Generally, the control voltage is first amplified using a voltage amplifier (VA) and then exerted on the PEA. In this VA-PEA module, the linear dynamics of the VA and the nonlinearities of the PEA are coupled. In this paper, it is found that the phase lag of the VA also contributes to the rate dependence of the VA-PEA module. If only the PEA's hysteresis is considered, it will be difficult to achieve high-frequency modeling and control. Consequently, great difficulties arise in high-frequency hysteresis compensation and trajectory tracking, e.g., in the fast scanning of atomic force microscopes. In this paper, the VA-PEA module is modeled to be the series connection of a linear subsystem and a nonlinear subsystem. Subsequently, a feedforward phase–dynamics compensator is proposed to compensate for both the PEA's hysteresis and the phase lag of the VA. Further, an unscented Kalman-filter-based proportional–integral–derivative controller is adopted as the feedback controller. Under this feedforward–feedback combined control scheme, high-bandwidth hysteresis compensation and trajectory tracking are achieved. The trajectory tracking results show that the closed-loop trajectory tracking bandwidth has been increased to the range of 0–1500 Hz, exhibiting excellent performance for fast scanning applications. Source activity was extracted from resting-state magnetoencephalography data of 103 subjects aged 18–60 years. The directionality of information flow was computed from the regional time courses using delay symbolic transfer entropy and phase entropy. The analysis yielded a dynamic source connectivity profile, disentangling the direction, strength, and time delay of the underlying causal interactions, producing independent time delays for cross-frequency amplitude-to-amplitude and phase-to-phase coupling. The computation of the dominant intrinsic coupling mode (DoCM) allowed me to estimate the probability distribution of the DoCM independently of phase and amplitude. The results support earlier observations of a posterior-to-anterior information flow for phase dynamics in {α1, α2, β, γ} and an opposite flow (anterior to posterior) in θ. Amplitude dynamics reveal posterior-to-anterior information flow in {α1, α2, γ}, a sensory-motor β-oriented pattern, and an anterior-to-posterior pattern in {δ, θ}. The DoCM between intra- and cross-frequency couplings (CFC) are reported here for the first time and independently for amplitude and phase; in both domains {δ, θ, α1}, frequencies are the main contributors to DoCM. Finally, a novel brain age index (BAI) is introduced, defined as the ratio of the probability distribution of inter- over intra-frequency couplings. This ratio shows a universal age trajectory: a rapid rise from the end of adolescence, reaching a peak in adulthood, and declining slowly thereafter. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to examine the release of highly concentrated water–sediment mixture in water, with or without ambient current. This technique allows us to extract the dominant features in spatio-temporal data sets and the POD total energies associated to the base parameter of the decomposition. Both one-component and two-component POD techniques are, respectively, applied on data relative to the solid volume fraction and on the solid volume fraction velocities. The analysis is based on an experiment in the literature and data sets provided by a two-phase flow solid-fluid numerical simulation. For release phenomenon without ambient current, the analysis of the POD results highlights that the impact of the particle diameter on the solid phase dynamics and the particle dispersion is modest during the falling time, but that it becomes preponderant during the formation of a turbidity current. Aided by POD, the impact of the ambient current is studied for a given particle diameter. As the ambient current becomes strong, we can observe the effect of the resistance of the bottom against the water–sediment mixture transport. According to the strength of the ambient current, the POD results show that the dynamics of the release phenomenon have two different regimes on either side of a clearly identified threshold value. Simple Summary: The cell division cycle is tightly regulated to ensure faithful and complete DNA replication. A critical cell cycle phase is G1 in which cells prepare DNA for replication in S phase. Interestingly, stem cells and cancer cells have both similarities and differences in their cell cycle regulatory mechanisms. In this review, we address the role of various cell cycle regulators in controlling the dynamics of G1 phase in stem cells and cancer cells. We also discuss recent advances in understanding how core pluripotency factors regulate the cell cycle and play dual roles in stem cell pluripotency and in cancers where they are aberrantly expressed. A better understanding of these common regulatory networks could offer potential new therapeutic avenues for cancer. G1 cell cycle phase dynamics are regulated by intricate networks involving cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), and CDK inhibitors, which control G1 progression and ensure proper cell cycle transitions. Moreover, adequate origin licensing in G1 phase, the first committed step of DNA replication in the subsequent S phase, is essential to maintain genome integrity. In this review, we highlight the intriguing parallels and disparities in G1 dynamics between stem cells and cancer cells, focusing on their regulatory mechanisms and functional outcomes. Notably, SOX2, OCT4, KLF4, and the pluripotency reprogramming facilitator c-MYC, known for their role in establishing and maintaining stem cell pluripotency, are also aberrantly expressed in certain cancer cells. In this review, we discuss recent advances in understanding the regulatory role of these pluripotency factors in G1 dynamics in the context of stem cells and cancer cells, which may offer new insights into the interconnections between pluripotency and tumorigenesis. Coherent wave groups are not only characterized by the intrinsic shape of the wave packet, but also by the underlying phase evolution during the propagation. Exact deterministic formulations of hydrodynamic or electromagnetic coherent wave groups can be obtained by solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). When considering the NLSE, there are two asymptotically equivalent formulations, which can be used to describe the wave dynamics: the time- or space-like NLSE. These differences have been theoretically elaborated upon in the 2016 work of Chabchoub and Grimshaw. In this paper, we address fundamental characteristic differences beyond the shape of wave envelope, which arise in the phase evolution. We use the Peregrine breather as a referenced wave envelope model, whose dynamics is created and tracked in a wave flume using two boundary conditions, namely as defined by the time- and space-like NLSE. It is shown that whichever of the two boundary conditions is used, the corresponding local shape of wave localization is very close and almost identical during the evolution; however, the respective local phase evolution is different. This paper presents a control structure integrating guidance and control loops for tail-controlled missile systems. Motivated by the fact that common tail-controlled missiles involve non-minimum phase dynamics, the proposed controller is designed to prevent the internal dynamics from diverging, as well as achieving homing against the intended target. To minimize the miss distance at the end of homing, we derive a formulation of a zero-effort-miss using engagement kinematics that contain the rotating dynamics of the missile, which is different from existing approaches. Subsequently, to nullify the zero-effort-miss, a nonlinear controller is designed based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Since the derived controller has a similar structure to the conventional three-loop topology that has been utilized for various tail-controlled flight systems, it is expected that the proposed method can be applied to the actual system from a practical point of view. Biological processes are governed by the expression of proteins, and for some proteins, their level of expression can fluctuate periodically over time (i.e., they oscillate). Many oscillatory proteins (e.g., cell cycle proteins and those from the HES family of transcription factors) are connected in complex ways, often within large networks. This complexity can be elucidated by developing intuitive mathematical models that describe the underlying critical aspects of the relationships between these processes. Here, we provide a mathematical explanation of a recently discovered biological phenomenon: the phasic position of the gene Hes1's oscillatory expression at the beginning of the cell cycle of an individual human breast cancer stem cell can have a predictive value on how long that cell will take to complete a cell cycle. We use a two-component model of coupled oscillators to represent Hes1 and the cell cycle in the same cell with minimal assumptions. Inputting only the initial phase angles, we show that this model is capable of predicting the dynamic mitosis to mitosis behaviour of Hes1 and predicting cell cycle length patterns as found in real-world experimental data. Moreover, we discover that bidirectional coupling between Hes1 and the cell cycle is critical within the system for the data to be reproduced and that nonfixed asymmetry in the interactions between the oscillators is required. The phase dynamics we present here capture the complex interplay between Hes1 and the cell cycle, helping to explain nongenetic cell cycle variability, which has critical implications in cancer treatment contexts. This manuscript provides a comprehensive tutorial on the operating principles of a bio-inspired Cellular Nonlinear Network, leveraging the local activity of NbO x memristors to apply a spike-based computing paradigm, which is expected to deliver such a separation between the steady-state phases of its capacitively-coupled oscillators, relative to a reference cell, as to unveal the classification of the nodes of the associated graphs into the least number of groups, according to the rules of a non-deterministic polynomial-hard combinatorial optimization problem, known as vertex coloring. Besides providing the theoretical foundations of the bio-inspired signal-processing paradigm, implemented by the proposed Memristor Oscillatory Network, and presenting pedagogical examples, illustrating how the phase dynamics of the memristive computing engine enables to solve the graph coloring problem, the paper further presents strategies to compensate for an imbalance in the number of couplings per oscillator, to counteract the intrinsic variability observed in the electrical behaviours of memristor samples from the same batch, and to prevent the impasse appearing when the array attains a steady-state corresponding to a local minimum of the optimization goal. The proposed Memristor Cellular Nonlinear Network, endowed with ad hoc circuitry for the implementation of these control strategies, is found to classify the vertices of a wide set of graphs in a number of color groups lower than the cardinality of the set of colors identified by traditional either software or hardware competitor systems. Given that, under nominal operating conditions, a biological system, such as the brain, is naturally capable to optimise energy consumption in problem-solving activities, the capability of locally-active memristor nanotechnologies to enable the circuit implementation of bio-inspired signal processing paradigms is expected to pave the way toward electronics with higher time and energy efficiency than state-of-the-art purely-CMOS hardware. The microstructure of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys is crucial in determining their mechanical properties and overall performance in engineering applications. This paper investigates the effect of a rotating magnetic field (RMF) and eutectic front velocity on the microstructure of hypereutectic Al-18 wt.% Si alloy. The hypereutectic samples were solidified using five different front velocities (0.02, 0.05, 0.09, 0.2, and 0.4 mm/s) with an average temperature gradient (G) of 8 K/mm in a crystallizer equipped with an RMF inductor. The samples were solidified into two sections. The first section solidified without stirring, while the second section solidified with stirring using RMF at an induction (B) of 7.2 mT. The length, angular orientation of eutectic Si lamellas, and interlamellar distances were measured in both the non-stirred and the stirred sections to evaluate the impact of RMF and front velocity on the eutectic structure. The results revealed that the application of RMF and the increase in front velocity during solidification led to the significant refinement of the eutectic structure. These findings highlight the potential of RMF and front velocity manipulation to enhance the microstructure of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys, with practical implications for the development of high-performance materials. Satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) are essential for climate monitoring, especially in regions with sparse observational data. This study compares the performance of the latest version (V07B) and its predecessor (V06B) of the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) across South America and the adjacent oceans. It focuses on evaluating their accuracy under different precipitation regimes in Brazil using 22 years of IMERG Final data (2000–2021), aggregated into seasonal totals (summer, autumn, winter, and spring). The observations used for the evaluation were organized into 0.1° × 0.1° grid points to match IMERG's spatial resolution. The analysis was restricted to grid points containing at least one rain gauge, and in cases where multiple gauges were present within a grid point the average value was used. The evaluation metrics included the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and categorical indices. The results reveal that while both versions effectively capture major precipitation systems such as the mesoscale convective system (MCS), South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), and Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), significant discrepancies emerge in high-rainfall areas, particularly over oceans and tropical zones. Over the continent, however, these discrepancies are reduced due to the correction of observations in the final version of IMERG. A comprehensive analysis of the RMSE across Brazil, both as a whole and within the five analyzed regions, without differentiating precipitation classes, demonstrates that version V07B effectively reduces errors compared to version V06B. The analysis of statistical indices across Brazil's five regions highlights distinct performance patterns between IMERG versions V06B and V07B, driven by regional and seasonal precipitation characteristics. V07B demonstrates a superior performance, particularly in regions with intense rainfall (R1, R2, and R5), showing a reduced RMSE and improved categorical indices. These advancements are linked to V07B's reduced overestimation in cold-top cloud regions, although both versions consistently overestimate at rain/no-rain thresholds and for light rainfall. However, in regions prone to underestimation, such as the interior of the Northeastern region (R3) during winter, and the northeastern coast (R4) during winter and spring, V07B exacerbates these issues, highlighting challenges in accurately estimating precipitation from warm-top cloud systems. This study concludes that while V07B exhibits notable advancements, further enhancements are needed to improve accuracy in underperforming regions, specifically those influenced by warm-cloud precipitation systems. Gap dynamics are driving many important processes in the development of temperate forest ecosystems. What remains largely unknown is how often the regeneration processes initialized by endogenous mortality of dominant and co-dominant canopy trees take place. We conducted a study in the high mountain forests of the Central Western Carpathians, naturally dominated by the Norway spruce. Based on the repeated forest inventories in two localities, we quantified the structure and amount of deadwood, as well as the associated mortality of standing dead canopy trees. We determined the basic specific gravity of wood and anatomical changes in the initial phase of wood decomposition. The approach for estimating the rate of gap formation and the number of canopy trees per unit area needed for intentional gap formation was formulated based on residence time analysis of three localities. The initial phase of gap formation (standing dead tree in the first decay class) had a narrow range of residence values, with a 90–95% probability that gap age was less than 10 or 13 years. Correspondingly, a relatively constant absolute number of 12 and 13 canopy spruce trees per hectare died standing in 10 years, with a mean diameter reaching 50–58 cm. Maximum diameters trees (70–80 cm) were represented by 1–4 stems per hectare. The values of the wood-specific gravity of standing trees were around 0.370–0.380 g.cm−3, and varied from 0.302 to 0.523 g.cm−3. Microscopically, our results point out that gap formation is a continuous long-lasting process, starting while canopy trees are living. We observed early signs of wood degradation and bacteria, possibly associated with bark beetles, that induce a strong effect when attacking living trees with vigorous defenses. New information about the initial phase of gap formation has provided a basis for the objective proposal of intervals and intensities of interventions, designed to promote a diversified structure and the long-term ecological stability of the mountain spruce stands in changing climate conditions. The Pattern Informatics Method (PI) was initially developed for medium-to-long-term earthquake prediction by analyzing changes in seismic activity. It has since been refined and extended to identify ionospheric anomalies associated with earthquakes. Notable advancements include the development of modified and improved methods, which have demonstrated their capability to detect significant short-term and ionospheric anomalies preceding earthquake events. In this study, the IPI method was applied to infrared satellite observation data for the first time, and a new algorithm for extracting short-term and imminent anomalies from infrared earthquakes was explored based on the IPI method, from which we obtained the MIPI (Modified Improved Pattern Informatics Method). Using 1° × 1° nighttime Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) data from NOAA_18 satellites of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center (NOAA-CPC) of the United States, the evolution of OLR anomalies before the Ridgecrest Ms 6.9 earthquake in the United States on 6 July 2019 as recorded by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) and the Maduo Ms 7.4 earthquake in China on 21 May 2021 as recorded by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) were studied. In order to make the IPI method suitable for the calculation of OLR data, two modifications were made to the IPI algorithm: (1) the quartile method was applied for automatically determining the abnormal changes in the OLR observation data and they were used as the input data instead of ionospheric data; (2) the standard deviation of the multi-year OLR residual data of each grid was used instead of the maximum anomaly index used in the original method to re-assign and obtain the relative anomaly index, and finally the anomaly evolution time series diagram was drawn. The results show the following: (1) The MIPI method can effectively extract short-term and imminent OLR anomalies prior to earthquakes. (2) Short-term and imminent OLR anomalies appeared about two weeks before each earthquake and lasted until the earthquake occurrence, disappearing after the earthquake. During this process, the anomalies exhibited a certain evolutionary trend. Accurate assessment of battery State of Health (SOH) is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of electric vehicles (EVs), which play a significant role in reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. This study introduces a novel SOH estimation method combining Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks (KAN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. The method is based on fully charged battery characteristics, extracting key parameters such as voltage, temperature, and charging data collected during cycles. Validation was conducted under a temperature range of 10 °C to 30 °C and different charge–discharge current rates. Notably, temperature variations were primarily caused by seasonal changes, enabling the experiments to more realistically simulate the battery's performance in real-world applications. By enhancing dynamic modeling capabilities and capturing long-term temporal associations, experimental results demonstrate that the method achieves highly accurate SOH estimation under various charging conditions, with low mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) values and a coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) exceeding 97%, significantly improving prediction accuracy and efficiency. Aiming at the challenges of rapid heat dissipation, limited swept efficiency, and a rapid water cut increase in steam huff and puff development in heavy oil reservoirs, an alternating steam and CO2/viscosity reducer huff and puff method for IOR was proposed. In this work, the effect of CO2 on the physical properties of heavy oil was evaluated, and the optimal concentration of viscosity reducer for synergistic interaction between CO2 and the viscosity reducer was determined. Next, novel huff and puff simulation experiments by three sandpack models of different sizes in series were analyzed. Then, the IOR difference between the pure steam huff and puff experiments and the steam-alternating CO2/viscosity reducer huff and puff were compared. Finally, the CO2 storage rate was obtained based on the principle of the conservation of matter. The results show that the optimal viscosity reducer concentration, 0.8 wt%, can achieve a 98.5% reduction after combining CO2. The steam-alternating CO2/viscosity reducer huff and puff reached about 45 cm at 80 °C in the fifth cycle due to the CO2/viscosity reducer effects. CO2/viscosity reducer huff and puff significantly reduces water cut during cold production, with an ultimate IOR 15.89% higher than pure steam huff and puff. The viscosity reducer alleviates heavy oil blockages, and CO2 decreases oil viscosity and enhances elastic repulsion energy. The highest CO2 storage rate of 76.8% occurs in the initial stage, declining to 15.2% by the sixth cycle, indicating carbon sequestration potential. These findings suggest that steam-alternating CO2/viscosity reducer huff and puff improves heavy oil reservoir development and provides theoretical guidance for optimizing steam huff and puff processes. Glacier movement is an important indicator of climate change, reflecting the quality and state changes in glacier migration and mass balance in the context of global warming. Although accurately estimating glacier surface flow velocity is crucial for various applications, achieving this is challenging due to factors such as low temporal correlation and high noise effects. This paper presents the pixel offset tracking (POT) technology based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for glacier velocity monitoring, with enhanced cross-correlation matching window and noise suppression approaches. In particular, a noise suppression optimization method and a matching window optimization index suitable for wide-area glacier velocity monitoring are proposed. The inter-annual wide-area two-dimensional plane flow velocity of glaciers in the Svalbard archipelago was obtained by using a total of seven Sentinel-1 data sets from two orbits covering the entire Svalbard archipelago in 2021. The results indicate that 25 large glaciers in Svalbard destabilized in 2021, with a peak flow velocity of 6.18 m/day. At the same time, the influence of climate, topography, and other factors on glacier surface velocity is discussed. The wide-area glacier velocity monitoring method and its application demonstrated in this paper will serve as a valuable reference for studying glacier migration in the Arctic Svalbard archipelago and for other large-scale wide-area deformation monitoring efforts. This paper presents a new approach to measuring eyelid movement using millimeter wave (mmW) radar technology. A two-step method is proposed, involving the observation of a small resolution cell corresponding to the monitored eye and the evaluation of the phase evolution over the measurement period. Simulations are conducted to support radar system optimization and data interpretation with a focus on detecting eyelid movement patterns and compensating for interference from other parts of the body. The feasibility of using this method with eyeglasses is also explored. The proposed technique's advantages and limitations are discussed in comparison with existing measurement alternatives. The melting mechanism at medium heating rates is unclear, owing to the lack of accurate characterizations of structural changes in poly-directional melting conditions. Here, a particular multilayered nanostructure was selected to control the propagation of melting in a single direction. We predicted the heterogeneous to homogeneous melting (HeM to HoM) transition during a single melting process at medium heating rates of 10–400 K/ps by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, without a change in heating rates. The information on structural changes for the HeM to HoM transition, including the loss of crystallinity and long- and short-range order, are clearly provided by both a single direction and the radial distribution functions. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common form of glaucoma. This condition leads to optic nerve degeneration and eventually to blindness. Tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, fast-food diets, obesity, heavy weight lifting, high-intensity physical exercises, and many other bad habits are lifestyle-related risk factors for POAG. By contrast, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise and the Mediterranean diet can alleviate POAG. In this work, we for the first time estimated the phylostratigraphic age indices (PAIs) of all 153 POAG-related human genes in the NCBI Gene Database. This allowed us to separate them into two groups: POAG-related genes that appeared before and after the phylum Chordata, that is, ophthalmologically speaking, before and after the camera-type eye evolved. Next, in the POAG-related genes' promoters, we in silico predicted all 3835 candidate SNP markers that significantly change the TATA-binding protein (TBP) affinity for these promoters and, through this molecular mechanism, the expression levels of these genes. Finally, we verified our results against five independent web services—PANTHER, DAVID, STRING, MetaScape, and GeneMANIA—as well as the ClinVar database. A Proportional–Integral (PI) controller is integrated to dynamically adjust the reference current based on the output voltage error, thereby enhancing overall system stability and performance. Unlike conventional PI-MPC methods, where the PI controller has an influence on the system dynamics, the PI controller in this approach is solely used for tuning the reference current needed for the FCS-MPC controller. The PI controller addresses small deviations in output voltage, primarily due to model prediction inaccuracies, ensuring steady-state accuracy, while the FCS-MPC handles fast dynamic responses to adapt the controller's behavior based on load conditions. This study explores the novel dynamics of the (3+1)-dimensional generalized Korteweg–de Vries–Zakharov–Kuznetsov (KdV-ZK) equation. A Galilean transformation is employed to derive the associated system of equations. Perturbing this system allows us to investigate the presence and characteristics of chaotic behavior, including return maps, fractal dimension, power spectrum, recurrence plots, and strange attractors, supported by 2D and time-dependent phase portraits. A sensitivity analysis is demonstrated to show how the system behaves when there are small changes in initial values. In this study, a new lightweight Al-Ti-Ta alloy was developed through a synergistic approach, combining CALPHAD methodology and entropy-driven design. Following compositional optimization, the Al87.5Ti6.25Ta6.25 (at.%) alloy was fabricated and isothermally heat-treated at 475 °C for 24 h to attain equilibrium. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed a dual-phase microstructure comprising a 50 vol.% FCC matrix enriched in Al and 50 vol.% Al3(Ti,Ta)-type intermetallic phase (IP). Notably, the FCC phase exhibited a high-melting transition temperature of 660 °C, surpassing conventional Al-Si cast alloys. Phase-specific nanomechanical properties were evaluated using Nanoindentation. Microindentation tests demonstrated exceptional microhardness of approximately 3300 MPa. These results indicate the alloy's superior hardness compared to conventional alloys such as Al-Si (A390), 7075 Al alloy, and CP-Ti, even exceeding Ti-64 alloy at a 15% lower density. The alloy's stability under prolonged heat treatment at 475 °C, reflected by stable phases, microstructure, and mechanical properties, highlights its enhanced thermal stability, which can be attributed to entropy-driven phase stabilization. Tidal bore dynamics in estuarine environments are influenced by both natural hydrological changes and human activities, such as coastal reclamation. This study focuses on the Qiantang River estuary, assessing the impacts of runoff variations and reclamation on tidal bores over the past five decades. By employing statistical and time-frequency methods, including the Mann–Kendall test, ordered clustering, and wavelet analysis, the relationships between tidal bore height, river discharge, and reclamation activities are examined. The results indicate that increased freshwater discharge reduces bore intensity over short timescales of 0.3 to 1.2 years, while decreased runoff amplifies it. Over longer periods of 4.1 to 8.3 years, a positive correlation emerges, with changes in runoff preceding variations in tidal bore height. Coastal reclamation, particularly the narrowing of channels, has significantly reduced the bore height at Yanguan, especially in the years following the 2000s. Additionally, the long-term interactions of other factors influencing tidal bores are explored. These findings reveal a delayed estuarine response to human modifications, highlighting the necessity of long-term monitoring and adaptive management strategies to mitigate these impacts. We investigate the superconducting lifetime of a long overdamped current-biased Josephson junction, in the presence of telegraph noise sources. The analysis is performed by randomly choosing the initial condition for the noise source. However, in order to investigate how the initial value of the dichotomous noise affects the phase dynamics, we extend our analysis using two different fixed initial values for the source of random fluctuations. In our study, the phase dynamics of the Josephson junction is analyzed as a function of the noise signal intensity, for different values of the parameters of the system and external driving currents. We find that the mean lifetime of the superconductive metastable state as a function of the noise intensity is characterized by nonmonotonic behavior, strongly related to the soliton dynamics during the switching towards the resistive state. In this work, we will investigate if red blood cell (RBC) membrane fluidity, influenced by several hyperglycemia-induced pathways, could provide a complementary index of HbA1c to monitor the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-related macroangiopathic complications such as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). The contextual liquid crystalline (LC) domain spatial organization in the membrane was analysed to investigate the phase dynamics of the transition. Twenty-seven patients with long-duration T2DM were recruited and classified in DM, including 12 non-PAD patients, and DM + PAD, including 15 patients in any stage of PAD. Mean values of RBC generalized polarization (GP), representative of membrane fluidity, together with spatial organization of LC domains were compared between the two groups; p-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Although comparable for anthropometric characteristics, duration of diabetes, and HbA1c, RBC membranes of PAD patients were found to be significantly more fluid (GP: 0.501 ± 0.026) than non-PAD patients (GP: 0.519 ± 0.007). These alterations were shown to be triggered by changes in both LC microdomain composition and distribution. We found a decrease in Feret diameter from 0.245 ± 0.281 μm in DM to 0.183 ± 0.124 μm in DM + PAD, and an increase in circularity. Altered RBC membrane fluidity is correlated to a spatial reconfiguration of LC domains, which, by possibly altering metabolic function, are associated with the development of T2DM-related macroangiopathic complications. Four fundamental models that describe the spread of Monkeypox disease are analyzed: the SIR-SIR, SEIR-SIR, SIR-SEIR, and SEIR-SEIR models. They form the basis of most Monkeypox diseases models that are currently discussed in the literature. It is shown that the way the model subpopulations are organized in disease outbreaks and evolve relative to each other is determined by the relevant unstable system eigenvectors, also called order parameters. For all models, analytical expressions of the order parameters are derived. Under appropriate conditions these order parameters describe the initial outbreak phases of exponential increase in good approximation. It is shown that all four models exhibit maximally two order parameters and maximally one human–animal order parameter. The human–animal order parameter firmly connects the outbreak dynamics in the animal system with the dynamics in the human system. For the special case of the SIR-SIR model, it is found that the two possible order parameters completely describe the dynamics of infected humans and animals during entire infection waves. Finally, a simulation of a Monkeypox infection wave illustrates that in line with the aforementioned analytical results the leading order parameter explains most of the variance in the infection dynamics. Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors are powerful molecular targeted therapeutic agents for lung cancer. We recently developed an original immunocytology and glass slide-based circulating tumor cell (CTC) detection platform for both CTC enumeration and EGFR mutation analysis with DNA extracted from CTCs. Methods: Using this platform, we conducted a pilot clinical study for CTC enumeration in peripheral blood (PB), pulmonary arterial blood (PA), and pulmonary venous blood (PV) from 33 patients with lung cancer (Stage I–III) who underwent surgery, followed by digital PCR-based EGFR mutation analysis of CTCs in PV from 12 patients. Results: The results showed that CTC levels were significantly higher in PV and PA than in PB (p < 0.05, p < 0.01. respectively), with a notably greater number of small and large CTC clusters (p < 0.01). Genetic analysis of EGFR mutations of CTCs from PV (n = 12) revealed six mutations, including three Exon19del and three L856R, in CTCs and eight EGFR mutations, including five Exon19del and three L856R, in lung tumor tissue. CTC mutation status matched that of tissue samples in nine patients, was unmatched in two patients, and controversial in one patient, indicating a sensitivity of 0.75 (6/8) and specificity of 1.0 (4/4) with some false-negative results for the mutation analysis of CTCs. Conclusions: This immunocytology-based CTC detection platform is a convenient method for detecting both CTC number and EGFR mutation status under microscopy, suggesting its potential as a liquid biopsy tool in the hospital for patients with lung cancer in some clinical settings. Heavy oil resources are abundant globally, holding immense development potential. However, conventional thermal recovery methods such as steam injection are plagued by high heat loss, substantial carbon emissions, and significant water consumption, making them incompatible with carbon reduction goals and the sustainable socioeconomic development demands. A new method of high-frequency electromagnetic in situ heating, which targets polar molecules, can convert electromagnetic energy into heat so as to achieve rapid volumetric heating of the reservoir. This method has the potential to overcome the drawbacks of traditional techniques. Nevertheless, it faces significant drawbacks such as limited heating range and inadequate energy supply during later production stages, which necessitates auxiliary enhancement measures. Various enhancement measures have been reported, including nitrogen injection, hydrocarbon solvent injection, or the use of nano-metal oxide injections. These methods are hindered by issues such as pure nitrogen being easy to breakthrough, high costs, and metal pollution. Through extensive literature review, this article charts the evolution of high-frequency electromagnetic in situ heating technology for heavy oil and the current understanding of the coupled heat and mass transfer mechanisms underlying this technology. Moreover, based on a profound analysis of the technology's progression trends, this work introduces a new direction: CO2-N2 co-injection as an enhancement strategy for high-frequency electromagnetic in situ heavy oil recovery. There is promising potential for the development of new technologies in the future that combine high efficiency, low carbon emissions, environmental friendliness, economic viability, and energy conservation. Furthermore, some research prospects in low-carbon situations and challenges for the new technology in future are presented in detail. This work aims to develop and validate a framework for the multiscale simulation of the biological response to ionizing radiation in a population of cells forming a tissue. We present TOPAS-Tissue, a framework to allow coupling two Monte Carlo (MC) codes: TOPAS with the TOPAS-nBio extension, capable of handling the track-structure simulation and subsequent chemistry, and CompuCell3D, an agent-based model simulator for biological and environmental behavior of a population of cells. We verified the implementation by simulating the experimental conditions for a clonogenic survival assay of a 2-D PC-3 cell culture model (10 cells in 10,000 µm2) irradiated by MV X-rays at several absorbed dose values from 0–8 Gy. The simulation considered cell growth and division, irradiation, DSB induction, DNA repair, and cellular response. The survival was obtained by counting the number of colonies, defined as a surviving primary (or seeded) cell with progeny, at 2.7 simulated days after irradiation. DNA repair was simulated with an MC implementation of the two-lesion kinetic model and the cell response with a p53 protein-pulse model. The simulated survival curve followed the theoretical linear–quadratic response with dose. The fitted coefficients α = 0.280 ± 0.025/Gy and β = 0.042 ± 0.006/Gy2 agreed with published experimental data within two standard deviations. TOPAS-Tissue extends previous works by simulating in an end-to-end way the effects of radiation in a cell population, from irradiation and DNA damage leading to the cell fate. In conclusion, TOPAS-Tissue offers an extensible all-in-one simulation framework that successfully couples Compucell3D and TOPAS for multiscale simulation of the biological response to radiation. Little research has been carried out in terms of modeling and control of analgesia. However, emerging new technology and recent prototypes paved the way for several ideas on pain modeling for control. Recently, such an idea has been proposed for measuring the Depth of Analgesia (DoA). In this paper, that solution is further exploited towards obtaining a novel fractional-order model and dedicated controller for DoA. First, clinical data from patients undergoing general anesthesia are used to determine a commensurate fractional-order model of the skin impedance at each sampling period. Second, we provide a proof of concept indicating that fractional order changes due to variations in the infused opioid drug (Remifentanil). Third, a fractional-order model for DoA is developed correlating the changes in the pain index (as the output signal) and the Remifentanil infusion rate (as the input signal). Standard optimization routines are used to estimate the parameters. A database of 19 real patients is used. Lastly, a preliminary fractional-order controller is designed and tested in simulation for the 19 patients. The closed-loop simulation results correspond to the expected clinical outcomes. Swash–swash interaction is a common natural phenomenon in the nearshore region, characterized by complex fluid motion. The characteristics of swash–swash interaction are crucial to sediment transport, subsequently affecting the beach morphology. This study investigates the hydrodynamics and sediment transport in swash–swash interaction under two successive solitary waves using a two-phase Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model. The effects of the time interval between the two waves are examined. It is shown that the time interval has a minor effect on the breaking and swash–swash interacting patterns as well as the final beach morphology but influences the run-up of the second wave and the instantaneous sediment flux. Under wave breaking in the swash–swash interaction, there is significant sediment suspension due to strong vortices, and the suspended sediment forms a plume upward from the bed. The sediment plumes gradually settle down as the vortices decay. These insights enhance the understanding of sediment transport and beach morphology under complex swash–swash interaction. The measurement of mixing time in a water model of soft-stirring steelmaking ladles is practically facing a problem of bad repeatability. This uncertainty severely affects both the understandings of transport phenomenon in ladles and the measurement accuracy. Scaled down by a ratio of 1:4, a water model based on an industrial 260-ton ladle is used. This paper studies the transport process paths and mixing time of salt solution tracers in the water model of eccentric gas-stirred ladles with a low gas flow rate. After a large number of repeated experiments, the different transport paths of the tracer and the error of the mixing time in each transport path are discussed and compared with the numerical simulation results. The results of a large number of repeated experiments on the water model show that there are five transport paths for the tracer in the ladle. The tracer of the first path is mainly transported by the left-side main circulation flow, which is identical to the numerical simulation results. The tracer of the second and third paths are also mainly transported by the left-side circulation flow, but bifurcations occur when the tracer in the middle area is transported downward. In the third path, the portion and intensity of the tracer transferring to the right side from the central region is higher than in the second path. The fourth path is that the tracer is transported downward from the left, middle, and right sides with a similar intensity at the same time. While the tracer in the fifth path is mainly transported on the right side, and the tracer forms a clockwise circulation flow on the right side. The mixing times from the first transport path to the fifth transport path are 158.3 s, 149.7 s, 171.7 s, 134 s and 95.7 s, respectively, among which the third transport path and the fifth transport path are the maximum and minimum values among all transport paths. In tight reservoir development, traditional enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods are incapable of effectively improving oil recovery in tight reservoirs. Given this, inter-fracture flooding is proposed as a new EOR method, and physical model simulation and numerical simulation are performed for inter-fracture water flooding. Compared with inter-fracture water flooding, inter-fracture gas flooding has a higher application prospect. However, few studies on inter-fracture gas flooding have been reported, and its EOR mechanisms and performance are unclear. This paper used the geological model of the actual tight reservoir to carry out numerical simulations for two horizontal wells in the Changqing Yuan 284 block. The results showed that (1) inter-fracture gas flooding can effectively supplement formation energy and increase formation pressure; (2) inter-fracture gas flooding delivers simultaneous displacement, which can effectively increase the swept area in tight reservoirs; (3) injected CO2 dissolves into the reservoir fluid, reduces fluid viscosity, and improves fluid flow through the reservoir; and (4) the recovery factor increment of the CO2 injection is higher than those of natural gas injection and N2 injection. Lower-limb exoskeletons (LLEs) can provide rehabilitation training and walking assistance for individuals with lower-limb dysfunction or those in need of functionality enhancement. Adapting and personalizing the LLEs is crucial for them to form an intelligent human–machine system (HMS). However, numerous LLEs lack thorough consideration of individual differences in motion planning, leading to subpar human performance. Prioritizing human physiological response is a critical objective of trajectory optimization for the HMS. This paper proposes a human-in-the-loop (HITL) motion planning method that utilizes surface electromyography signals as biofeedback for the HITL optimization. The proposed method combines offline trajectory optimization with HITL trajectory selection. Based on the derived hybrid dynamical model of the HMS, the offline trajectory is optimized using a direct collocation method, while HITL trajectory selection is based on Thompson sampling. The direct collocation method optimizes various gait trajectories and constructs a gait library according to the energy optimality law, taking into consideration dynamics and walking constraints. Subsequently, an optimal gait trajectory is selected for the wearer using Thompson sampling. The selected gait trajectory is then implemented on the LLE under a hybrid zero dynamics control strategy. Thermal management technology based on loop heat pipes (LHPs) has broad application prospects in heat transfer control for aerospace and new energy vehicles. LHPs offer excellent heat transfer performance, reliability, and flexibility, making them suitable for high-heat flux density, high-power heat dissipation, and complex thermal management scenarios. However, due to limitations in heat source temperature and heat transfer power range, LHP-based thermal management systems still face challenges, especially in thermohydraulic modeling, component design, and optimization. Steady-state models improve computational efficiency and accuracy, while transient models capture dynamic behavior under various conditions, aiding performance evaluation during start-up and non-steady-state scenarios. Designs for single/multi-evaporators, compensation chambers, and wick materials are also reviewed. Single-evaporator designs offer compact and efficient start-up, while multi-evaporator designs handle complex thermal environments with multiple heat sources. Innovations in wick materials, such as porous metals, composites, and 3D printing, enhance capillary driving force and heat transfer performance. A comprehensive summary of working fluid selection criteria is conducted, and the effects of selecting organic, inorganic, and nanofluid working fluids on the performance of LHPs are evaluated. The selection process should consider thermodynamic properties, safety, and environmental friendliness to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, the mechanism and optimization methods of the start-up behavior, temperature oscillation, and non-condensable gas on the operating characteristics of LHPs were summarized. Optimizing vapor/liquid distribution, heat load, and sink temperature enhances start-up efficiency and minimizes temperature overshoot. Improved capillary structures and working fluids reduce temperature oscillations. Addressing non-condensable gases with materials like titanium and thermoelectric coolers ensures long-term stability and reliability. In this paper, we present a new class of extended oscillators in light of chaos theory. It is based on dynamical complex systems built on the concept of self-describing with a stopping criterion process. We offer an effective studying approach with a specific focus on learning, provoking students' thinking through the triad of enigmatics–creativity–acmeology. Dynamic processes are the basis of mathematical modeling; thus, we can reach the goal of the above-mentioned triad by the proposed differential systems. The results we derive strongly confirm the presence of symmetry in the outcomes of the proposed models. We suggest a stochastic approach to structuring the proposed dynamical systems by modeling the coefficients that drive them by some discrete probability distribution that exhibits symmetry or asymmetry. It is well established that microRNA-21 (miR-21) targets phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), facilitating epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and drug resistance in cancer. Recent evidence indicates that PTEN activates its pseudogene-derived long non-coding RNA, PTENP1, which in turn inhibits miR-21. However, the dynamics of PTEN, miR-21, and PTENP1 in the DNA damage response (DDR) remain unclear. Thus, we propose a dynamic Boolean network model by integrating the published literature from various cancers. Our model shows good agreement with the experimental findings from breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), elucidating how DDR activation transitions from the intra-S phase to the G2 checkpoint, leading to a cascade of cellular responses such as cell cycle arrest, senescence, autophagy, apoptosis, drug resistance, and EMT. Model validation underscores the roles of PTENP1, miR-21, and PTEN in modulating EMT and drug resistance. Furthermore, our analysis reveals nine novel feedback loops, eight positive and one negative, mediated by PTEN and implicated in DDR cell fate determination, including pathways related to drug resistance and EMT. Our work presents a comprehensive framework for investigating cellular responses following DDR, underscoring the therapeutic potential of targeting PTEN, miR-21, and PTENP1 in cancer treatment. Liquid water has been recognized long ago to be the matrix of many processes, including life and also rock dynamics. Interactions among biomolecules occur very differently in a non-aqueous system and are unable to produce life. This ability to make living processes possible implies a very peculiar structure of liquid water. According to modern Quantum Field Theory (QFT), a complementary principle (in the sense of Niels Bohr) holds between the number N of field quanta (including the matter field whose quanta are just the atoms/molecules) and the phase Ф. This means that when we focus on the atomic structure of matter it loses its coherence properties and, vice versa, when we examine the phase dynamics of the system its atomic structure becomes undefined. This study is concerned with developing a robust tracking control system that merges the optimal control theory with fractional-order-based control and the heuristic optimization algorithms into a single framework for the non-minimum phase pitch angle dynamics of Boeing 747 aircraft. The main control objective is to deal with the non-minimum phase nature of the aircraft pitching-up action, which is used to increase the altitude. The fractional-order integral controller (FIC) is implemented in the control loop as a pre-compensator to compensate for the non-minimum phase effect. Then, the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is introduced as an optimal feedback controller to this augmented model ensuring the minimum phase to create an efficient, robust, and stable closed-loop control system. The control problem is formulated in a single objective optimization framework and solved for an optimal feedback gain together with pre-compensator parameters according to an error index and heuristic optimization constraints. The fractional-order integral pre-compensator is replaced by a fractional-order derivative pre-compensator in the proposed structure for comparison in terms of handling the non-minimum phase limitations, the magnitude of gain, phase-margin, and time-response specifications. To further verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the LQR-FIC controller is compared with the pole placement controller as a full-state feedback controller that has been successfully applied to control aircraft dynamics in terms of time and frequency domains. The performance, robustness, and internal stability characteristics of the proposed control strategy are validated by simulation studies carried out for flight conditions of fault-free, 50%, and 80% losses of actuator effectiveness. In recent years, there has been a significant amount of research on tiltrotor multicopter unmanned aerial vehicles (TM-UAVs) in aerial robotics. Despite the varying frame types of TM-UAVs, they all still aim to decouple the propeller from the body, which means that the propeller's attitude control is independent of the body's attitude control. On the one hand, this solves the issue of multicopter unmanned aerial vehicles (M-UAVs) being limited by small roll and pitch angles, thereby improving flight performance. On the other hand, it addresses the drawbacks of M-UAVs as typical underactuated systems. However, the fact still remains that it cannot significantly change thrust direction, thus providing the necessary wrench direction for aerial manipulation. This paper presents a pitch-axis tiltrotor quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) design named Tilt-X, which can maximize horizontal pulling force and yaw moment when used as an aerial manipulator. Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) usually present several degradation processes, which include their complex Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) formation process, which can result in mechanical, thermal, and chemical failures. The SEI layer is a protective layer that forms on the anode surface. The SEI layer allows the movement of lithium ions while blocking electrons, which is necessary to prevent short circuits in the battery and ensure safe operation. However, the SEI formation mechanisms reduce battery capacity and power as they consume electrolyte species, resulting in irreversible material loss. Furthermore, it is important to understand the degradation reactions of the LIBs used in Electric Vehicles (EVs), aiming to establish the battery lifespan, predict and minimise material losses, and establish an adequate time for replacement. Moreover, LIBs applied in EVs suffer from two main categories of degradation, which are, specifically, calendar degradation and cycling degradation. There are several studies about battery degradation available in the literature, including different degradation phenomena, but the degradation mechanisms of large-format LIBs have rarely been investigated. Therefore, this review aims to present a systematic review of the existing literature about LIB degradation, providing insight into the complex parameters that affect battery degradation mechanisms. Furthermore, this review has investigated the influence of time, C-rate, depth of discharge, working voltage window, thermal and mechanical stresses, and side reactions in the degradation of LIBs. Gaps are openings within tropical forest canopies created by natural or anthropogenic disturbances. Important aspects of gap dynamics that are not well understood include how gaps close over time and their potential for contagiousness, indicating whether the presence of gaps may or may not induce the creation of new gaps. This is especially important when we consider disturbances from selective logging activities in rainforests, which take away large trees of high commercial value and leave behind a forest full of gaps. The goal of this study was to quantify and understand how gaps open and close over time within tropical rainforests using a time series of airborne LiDAR data, attributing observed processes to gap types and origins. For this purpose, the Jamari National Forest located in the Brazilian Amazon was chosen as the study area because of the unique availability of multi-temporal small-footprint airborne LiDAR data covering the time period of 2011–2017 with five data acquisitions, alongside the geolocation of trees that were felled by selective logging activities. We found an increased likelihood of natural new gaps opening closer to pre-existing gaps associated with felled tree locations (<20 m distance) rather than farther away from them, suggesting that small-scale disturbances caused by logging, even at a low intensity, may cause a legacy effect of increased mortality over six years after logging due to gap contagiousness. Moreover, gaps were closed at similar annual rates by vertical and lateral ingrowth (16.7% yr−1) and about 90% of the original gap area was closed at six years post-disturbance. Therefore, the relative contribution of lateral and vertical growth for gap closure was similar when consolidated over time. We highlight that aboveground biomass or carbon density of logged forests can be overestimated if considering only top of the canopy height metrics due to fast lateral ingrowth of neighboring trees, especially in the first two years of regeneration where 26% of gaps were closed solely by lateral ingrowth, which would not translate to 26% of regeneration of forest biomass. Trees inside gaps grew 2.2 times faster (1.5 m yr−1) than trees at the surrounding non-gap canopy (0.7 m yr−1). Our study brings new insights into the processes of both the opening and closure of forest gaps within tropical forests and the importance of considering gap types and origins in this analysis.
