Surface transportation has evolved through technology advancements using parallel knowledge areas such as machine learning (ML). However, the transportation industry has not yet taken full advantage of ML. To evaluate this gap, we utilized a literature review approach to locate, categorize, and synthesize the principal concepts of research papers regarding surface transportation systems using ML algorithms, and we then decomposed them into their fundamental elements. We explored more than 100 articles, literature review papers, and books. The results show that 74% of the papers concentrate on forecasting, while multilayer perceptions, long short-term memory, random forest, supporting vector machine, XGBoost, and deep convolutional neural networks are the most preferred ML algorithms. However, sophisticated ML algorithms have been minimally used. The root-cause analysis revealed a lack of effective collaboration between the ML and transportation experts, resulting in the most accessible transportation applications being used as a case study to test or enhance a given ML algorithm and not necessarily to enhance a mobility or safety issue. Additionally, the transportation community does not define transportation issues clearly and does not provide publicly available transportation datasets. The transportation sector must offer an open-source platform to showcase the sector's concerns and build spatiotemporal datasets for ML experts to accelerate technology advancements. SOCS1 deficiency, which increases susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), promotes CDKN1A expression in the liver. High CDKN1A expression correlates with disease severity in many cancers. Here, we demonstrate a crucial pathogenic role of CDKN1A in diethyl nitrosamine (DEN)-induced HCC in SOCS1-deficient mice. Mechanistic studies on DEN-induced genotoxic response revealed that SOCS1-deficient hepatocytes upregulate SOCS3 expression, SOCS3 promotes p53 activation, and Cdkn1a induction that were abolished by deleting either Socs3 or Tp53 . Previous reports implicate CDKN1A in promoting oxidative stress response mediated by NRF2, which is required for DEN-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. We show increased induction of NRF2 and its target genes in SOCS1-deficient livers following DEN treatment that was abrogated by the deletion of either Cdkn1a or Socs3 . Loss of SOCS3 in SOCS1-deficient mice reduced the growth of DEN-induced HCC without affecting tumor incidence. In the TCGA-LIHC dataset, the SOCS1 -low/ SOCS3 -high subgroup displayed increased CDKN1A expression, enrichment of NRF2 transcriptional signature, faster disease progression, and poor prognosis. Overall, our findings show that SOCS1 deficiency in hepatocytes promotes compensatory SOCS3 expression, p53 activation, CDKN1A induction, and NRF2 activation, which can facilitate cellular adaptation to oxidative stress and promote neoplastic growth. Thus, the NRF2 pathway represents a potential therapeutic target in SOCS1 -low/ SOCS3 -high HCC cases.

Sodium tungstate (Na2WO4) was filled into the micropores and onto the surface of a magnesium alloy microarc oxidation (MAO) coating by means of vacuum impregnation. Subsequently, the coating was sealed through silane treatment to synergistically boost its corrosion resistance. The phase composition of the coating was inspected using XRD. FTIR was utilized to analyze the functional groups in the coating. XPS was employed to study the chemical composition and valence state of the coating. The surface and cross-sectional morphology of the coating, along with its elemental composition and distribution, were investigated by SEM and EDS. Meanwhile, the thickness of the coating was analyzed using Image J software. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was employed to determine the corrosion resistance of the coating. The results show that compared with an MAO coating, M-0.125W composite coating (only filled with sodium tungstate on the surface of the MAO coating), and M-SG composite coating (only receiving silanization treatment applied to the surface of the MAO coating), the corrosion resistance of the M-nW-SG composite coating (loaded with sodium tungstate on the surface of the MAO coating and then treated with silane) is significantly improved. This is mainly attributed to the fact that sodium tungstate can be combined with Mg2+ to form insoluble magnesium tungstate protective film, which blocks corrosion media. At the same time, silanization treatment further seals the MAO coating and increases the compactness of the coating. In addition, with the increase in the impregnation concentration of sodium tungstate, the content of sodium tungstate in the M-nW-SG composite coating improves, and the sealing effect of silanization treatment is better. When the impregnation concentration of sodium tungstate is 0.1 mol/L or above, the MAO coating with sodium tungstate can be completely sealed. When the impregnation concentration of sodium tungstate is 0.125 mol/L, M-0.125W-SG composite coating has the best corrosion resistance, and its impedance modulus value can be maintained at 8.06 × 106 Ω·cm2 after soaking in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 144 h, which is about three orders of magnitude higher than those of MAO coating and M-0.125W and M-SG composite coatings. One of the most significant urban challenges focuses on addressing the effects of urban overheating as a consequence of climate change. Several methods have been developed to characterize urban heat islands (UHIs); however, the most widely used involve complex planning, huge time consumption, and substantial human and technical resources on field monitoring campaigns. Therefore, this study aims to provide an easily accessible and affordable remote sensing method for locating urban hotspots and addresses a multi-criteria assessment of urban heat-related parameters, allowing for a comprehensive city-wide evaluation. The novelty is based on leveraging the potential of the last Landsat 9 satellite, the application of kernel spatial interpolation, and GIS open access data, providing very high-resolution land surface temperature images over urban spaces. Within GIS workflow, the city is divided into LCZs, thermal hotspots are detected, and finally, it is analyzed to understand how urban factors, such as urban boundaries, building density, and vegetation, affect urban scale LST, all using graphical and analytical cross-assessment. The methodology has been tested in Seville, a representative warm Mediterranean city, where variations of up to 10 °C have been found between homogeneous residential areas. Thermal hotspots have been located, representing 11% of the total residential fabric, while results indicate a clear connection between the urban factors studied and overheating. Hanji-derived porous carbon has been developed and utilized as a cathode material for Li-S batteries, demonstrating exceptional electrochemical performance and stability. The unique porous structure and high surface area of Hanji-based carbon enhanced S utilization and significantly improved the overall efficiency of the battery. The material exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and structural stability, effectively addressing the major challenges of Li-S batteries, such as the polysulfide shuttle effect and active material loss. In addition, flake carbon-coated separators (FCCSs) were integrated into Li-S cells to further enhance their performance, achieving a high initial specific capacity of approximately 1200 mAh/g and maintaining a capacity of 620 mAh/g after 100 cycles. In contrast, cells with conventional polypropylene separators exhibited lower initial capacities (946 mAh/g), which decreased to 366 mAh/g after 100 cycles. FCCSs also demonstrated superior capacity retention and stability under varying charge–discharge rates, maintaining a capacity of 200 mAh/g at 3 C and recovering to 730 mAh/g when the rate was 0.1 C. This study provides valuable insights into the development of sustainable and efficient Li-S battery systems, with Hanji-based carbon and FCCSs emerging as promising components for commercial applications. Variations in the microstructural morphology with building direction during selective laser melting (SLM) result in the anisotropic mechanical properties of the specimens, while heat treatment effectively reduces this anisotropy. The degree of anisotropy of the material can be assessed by calculating the variance (σ) of the mechanical properties (strength, hardness) at different building directions at different temperatures. In this work, the effects of heat treatment temperatures (450°, 750 °C, and 1050 °C) and building directions (0°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) on the microstructure, hardness, and tensile properties of selective laser melting (SLM) SS316L were investigated. Unheated SLM SS316L specimens exhibit significant anisotropy (σUTS = 16.67, σUE = 9.60, and σHV = 9.60), while heat treatment effectively reduces this anisotropy. As the heat treatment temperature increases, the melt pool boundaries disappear and grains become uniform at 750 °C, significantly reducing the anisotropy of the mechanical properties (σUTS = 14.65, σUE = 4.33, σHV = 6.72). At 1050 °C, the grain size increases slightly, resulting in a minor rise in anisotropy (σUTS = 14.93, σUE = 4.97, σHV = 8.39) compared to that seen at 750 °C. After heat treatment, the SLM SS316L specimen heated at 450 °C shows the lowest anisotropy. Notably, the specimens built in the 0° direction and heated at 450 °C exhibit finer sub-grains and enhanced mechanical properties, achieving a hardness of 244.43 HV, a tensile strength of 655.85 MPa, and an elongation of 21.25%. In this article we present three instruments: (1) a social vulnerability to extreme heat index to identify the areas of a city (and populations thereof) more vulnerable to extreme heat due to climate change (heat islands); (2) a new overall fragility index that incorporates social vulnerability to extreme heat as well as socioeconomic indicators; and (3) a climate shelter index (CSI) to identify areas within a city that can provide relief from extreme heat based on green and blue solutions. We elaborated these three indexes to measure social vulnerability to extreme heat in the municipality of Bologna, which serves as this article's case study. By analyzing the connections between social vulnerability to extreme heat and several socio-demographic variables in Bologna, we found that a decrease in income is significantly correlated with an increase in social vulnerability to extreme heat in urban contexts. A comparison between our new overall fragility index and the existing index adopted by the municipality of Bologna (Indice di fragilità, Comune di Bologna) showed that about 75% of the statistical areas observed are worse off when social vulnerability to extreme heat is also considered. Considering social vulnerability to extreme heat shows vulnerabilities in a city (here: Bologna) that the pre-existing index did not consider. These findings and our new indexes can support the Bologna administration (and other local administrations) in addressing the consequences of climate change for their most vulnerable residents. The elimination of pollutants in real water and wastewater is a challenge for the successful application of electrooxidation processes (EOPs). The presence of inorganic salts in the reaction medium is of great relevance during EOPs, with active participation in the electrochemical reactions. A revision of the reported devices used in the decontamination and disinfection of real wastewater demonstrated the main drawbacks of efficiently removing pollutants. However, the combination of photocatalytic processes with electrochemical technologies has been explored to improve overall efficiency and reduce energy consumption. A wide variety of materials, mainly metals, polymers, carbon and graphite derivatives, oxides, and MOFs, as well as their combinations, have been applied to electrodes and photoactive coatings. The deposition of the active layer has been enriched with novel designs, including porous hierarchical growth and 3D printing. The use of powerful characterization techniques allows for the study of the composition, structure, surface, and photo- and electrochemical performance of the fabricated electrodes. The simultaneous optimization of the operating conditions, parameters, and reactors must be specifically defined according to each water matrix. This approach will increase the efficiency of the whole process and contribute to cost savings. Economic contributions have been revised to calculate the cost of wastewater treatment. Optimizing urban spatial form has become an important research topic for promoting urban sustainable development and improving energy efficiency. This study selects 164 high-rise residential blocks in the Changsha area as the research object and constructs three multi-objective optimization frameworks and mathematical models for the spatial form of high-rise residential blocks based on the Rhino and Grasshopper parametric platform. The TOPSIS comprehensive evaluation method is combined to further screen the Pareto front solutions, and global sensitivity analysis of spatial form parameters is conducted using Simlab to explore the multi-objective optimization strategies for the spatial form of high-rise residential blocks in the Changsha area, guided by energy performance. Practical cases are selected for verification. The results show that, (1) after multi-objective optimization, the optimal scheme for the determinant type reduces EUI by 7.22%, increases PVP by 28.84%, and reduces CGR by 2.21%. The optimal scheme for the point-cluster type reduces EUI by 3.80%, increases PVP by 7.34%, and reduces CGR by 2.30%. The optimal scheme for the staggered type reduces EUI by 6.66%, increases PVP by 17.65%, and reduces CGR by 2.26%. (2) The potential order of spatial form optimization for the three types of high-rise residential blocks in the Changsha area is determinant type > staggered type > point-cluster type. (3) The spatial form parameters most sensitive to the three architectural performance goals of EUI, PVP, and CGR are floor area ratio and average number of floors. The research results will provide quantifiable references for scientific decision-making in the design practice of high-rise residential blocks in the Changsha area and even in regions with hot summers and cold winters. Rapid, effective, and cost-effective methods for large-scale screening of pesticide residues in the environment and agricultural products are important for assessing potential environmental risks and safeguarding human health. Here, we constructed a novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) electrochemical aptamer (Apt) sensor based on red-emissive sulfur quantum dots (SQDs), which aimed at the rapid screening and quantitative detection of malathion. SQDs were prepared using a two-step oxidation method with good electrochemiluminescence (ECL) optical properties. These SQDs were modified onto the electrode surface to serve as ECL luminophores. Subsequently, Apt was introduced and modified to form a double-helix structure with the complementary chain (cDNA). The ECL signal was reduced because the biomolecules had poor electrical conductivity and inefficient electron transfer. When the target malathion was added, the double helix structure was unraveled, the malathion Apt fell off the electrode surface, and the ECL signal was restored. The linear range of detection was 1.0 × 10−13–1.0 × 10−8 mol·L−1, and the detection limit was 0.219 fM. Cisplatin-based platinum compounds are important clinical chemotherapeutic agents that participate in most tumor chemotherapy regimens. Through density-functional theory calculations, the formation and stability of the inorganic oxide carrier, the mechanisms of the hydrolysis reaction of the activated platinum compound, and its binding mechanism with DNA bases can be studied. The higher the oxidation state of Pt (II to IV), the more electrons transfer from the magnesia–gold composite material to the platinum compound. After adsorption on the composite carrier, 5d←2p coordination bonds of Pt-N are strengthened. For flat and oblique adsorption modes of cisplatin, there is no significant difference in the density of states of the gold and magnesium oxide film, indicating the maintenance of the heterojunction structural framework. However, there are significant changes in the electronic states of cisplatin itself with different adsorption configurations. In the flat configuration, the band gap width of cisplatin is larger than that of the oblique configuration. The Cl-Pt bond range in the Pt(III) compound shows a clear charge reduction on the magnesia film, indicating the Cl-Pt bond is an active site with the potential for decomposition and hydrolysis. The substitution of chloride ions by water can lead to hydrolysis products, enhancing the polarization of the composite and showing strong charge separation. The hydrolysis of the free platinum compound is endothermic by 0.309 eV, exceeding the small activation energy barrier of 0.399 eV, indicating that hydrolysis of this platinum compound is easily achievable. ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) prediction parameters indicate that hydrolysis products have good ESOL (Estimated SOLubility) solubility and high gastrointestinal absorption, consistent with Lipinski's rule. During the coordination reaction process, there are significant changes in the distribution of frontier molecular orbitals, with the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) of the initial state primarily located on the purine base, providing the possibility for electron transfer to the empty orbitals of the platinum compound in the LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital). The HOMO and HOMO-1 of the transition state and product are mainly distributed on the platinum compound, indicating clear electron transfer and orbital rearrangement. The activation energy barrier for the purine coordination reaction with the hydrolysis products is reduced to 0.61 eV, and the dipole moment gradually decreases to 6.77 Debye during the reaction, indicating a reduction in the system's charge separation and polarization. Simple Summary: We present a new molecular signature, based on altered miRNA expressions and specific mutations, allowing for improving the screening of malignant thyroid nodules. This is a prospective non-interventional study, including all Bethesda categories, carried out on an FNAB sampled in suspicious nodule(s) during thyroidectomy. The reference diagnosis was the pathological assessment of the surgical specimen. miRNA quantification and mutations detection were performed. Different classification algorithms were trained with molecular data to correctly classify the samples. The random forest was the best algorithm. This classifier used mostly miRNAs to classify the nodules. This classifier is able to identify malignant nodules with a high PPV and NPV (both 90%), a high specificity (96%) and a competitive sensitivity (76%). Our data suggest that miRNA expressions emerge as more reliable first-line diagnostic markers. This signature could be efficient to improve the screening of thyroid cancer as a complementary test in clinical practice, to reduce the rate of unnecessary surgery. To improve the detection of malignant nodules, different molecular tests have been developed. We present a new molecular signature based on altered miRNA expressions and specific mutations. Regenerative medicine utilizes stem cells to repair damaged tissues by replacing them with their differentiated cells and activating the body's inherent regenerative abilities. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells that possess tissue repair and regenerative capabilities and immunomodulatory properties with a much lower risk of tumorigenicity, making them a focus of numerous clinical trials worldwide. MSCs primarily exert their therapeutic effects through paracrine effects via secreted factors, such as cytokines and exosomes. This has led to increasing interest in cell-free therapy, where only the conditioned medium (also called secretome) from MSC cultures is used for regenerative applications. However, MSCs face certain limitations, including cellular senescence, scarcity, donor heterogeneity, complexity, short survival post-implantation, and regulatory and ethics hurdles. To address these challenges, various types of immortalized MSCs (ImMSCs) capable of indefinite expansion have been developed. These cells offer significant promise and essential tools as a reliable source for both cell-based and cell-free therapies with the aim of translating them into practical medicine. However, the process of immortalization, often involving the transduction of immortalizing genes, poses potential risks of genetic instability and resultant malignant transformation. Cell-free therapy is particularly attractive, as it circumvents the risks of tumorigenicity and ethical concerns associated with live cell therapies. Rigorous safety tests, such as monitoring chromosomal abnormalities, are critical to ensure safety. Technologies like inducible or suicide genes may allow for the controlled proliferation of MSCs and induce apoptosis after their therapeutic task is completed. The paper presents an overview of conductive polymer composites based on thermosetting materials, thermoplastics, and elastomers modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). To impart conductive properties to polymers, metal, carbon-dispersed materials, or their combinations are used. The inclusion of dispersed materials in polymers is associated with their microstructural features, as well as with polymerization methods. Such polymerization methods as melt mixing, solution technology, and introduction of fillers into the liquid phase of the composite with subsequent polymerization due to the use of a catalyst are known. Polymer composites that are capable of conducting electric current and changing their properties under the influence of an electric field, i.e., having one or more functional purposes, are called "smart" or intelligent. One such application is electric heating elements with the function of adaptive energy consumption or the effect of self-regulation of temperature depending on the surrounding conditions. A wide variety of polymers and dispersed materials with conductive properties determines a wide range of functional capabilities of the composite, including a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) required to control temperature properties. The most effective filler in a polymer for obtaining a composite with desired properties is carbon nanomaterials, in particular, CNT. This is due to the fact that CNTs are a nanosized material with a high bulk density at a low weight, which allows for high electrical conductivity. Calculation of model parameters of polymer composites containing carbon nanostructures can be carried out using neural networks and machine learning, which give a fundamentally new result. The article contains sections with an assessment of various types of polymer matrices based on thermosets, thermoplastics, and elastomers. To impart electrically conductive properties, various options for fillers based on Ag, Au, Cu, Ni, Fe, and CNTs are considered. Methods for introducing dispersed fillers into polymer matrices are presented. Functional composites with a positive temperature coefficient and methods for their regulation are considered. The mechanisms of various electrophysical processes in conductive composites are considered, taking into account the resulting electrical conductivity based on the tunnel effect and hopping conductivity. An analysis of electric heaters based on various polymer matrices and dispersed fillers is carried out, taking into account their operating modes. Thus, the conducted review of modern scientific and practical research in the field of obtaining electrically conductive composites based on various types of polymer matrices with nanosized additives allows us to assess the prospects for the formation of functional composites for electrical heating, taking into account the mechanisms of electrical conductivity and new technologies based on machine learning and neural networks. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal primarily found as a by-product of zinc production. Cd was a proven carcinogen, and exposure to this metal has been linked to various adverse health effects, which were first reported in the mid-19th century and thoroughly investigated by the 20th century. The toxicokinetics and dynamics of Cd reveal its propensity for long biological retention and predominant storage in soft tissues. Until the 1950s, Cd pollution was caused by industrial activities, whereas nowadays, the main source is phosphate fertilizers, which strongly contaminate soil and water and affect human health and ecosystems. Cd enters the human body mainly through ingestion and inhalation, with food and tobacco smoke being the primary sources. It accumulates in various organs, particularly the kidney and liver, and is known to cause severe health problems, including renal dysfunction, bone diseases, cardiovascular problems, and many others. On a cellular level, Cd disrupts numerous biological processes, inducing oxidative stress generation and DNA damage. This comprehensive review explores Cd pollution, accumulation, distribution, and biological impacts on bacteria, fungi, edible mushrooms, plants, animals, and humans on a molecular level. Molecular aspects of carcinogenesis, apoptosis, autophagy, specific gene expression, stress protein synthesis, and ROS formation caused by Cd were discussed as well. This paper presents a method for producing VTMS/HAp/VTMS/VTMS multilayer coatings on a Grade 2 titanium substrate and characterizes their structure and functional properties. Two solutions were used to produce the coatings: one based on vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) and the other on hydroxyapatite (HAp) powder. The coatings were applied using immersion using the sol-gel method. Microstructural tests of the multilayer coatings were performed, their chemical composition was determined, and the structure was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). A detailed analysis of the geometric structure of the coatings was carried out both before and after corrosion tests. The geometric structure of the multilayer coatings was analyzed using a light microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The thickness of the coatings was determined using a Testan DT-10 AN 120 157 m, and the adhesion of the coatings to the substrate was analyzed using Scotch™ tape. The corrosion resistance of the coatings in simulated body fluid was tested to evaluate their suitability for implantology. As demonstrated by the research presented in this paper, the sol–gel process can successfully produce silane coatings by adding hydroxyapatite powder. Despite the promising potential of cell-based therapies developed using tissue engineering techniques to treat a wide range of diseases, including limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), which leads to corneal blindness, their commercialization remains constrained. This is primarily attributable to the limited cell sources, the use of non-standardizable, unscalable, and unsustainable techniques, and the extended manufacturing processes required to produce transplantable tissue-like surrogates. Herein, we present the first demonstration of the potential of a novel approach combining collagen films (CF), hyaluronic acid (HA), human telomerase-immortalized limbal epithelial stem cells (T-LESCs), and macromolecular crowding (MMC) to develop innovative biomimetic substrates for limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs). The initial step involved the fabrication and characterization of CF and CF enriched with HA (CF-HA). Subsequently, T-LESCs were seeded on CF, CF-HA, and tissue culture plastic (TCP). Thereafter, the effect of these matrices on basic cellular function and tissue-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition with or without MMC was evaluated. The viability and metabolic activity of cells cultured on CF, CF-HA, and TCP were found to be similar, while CF-HA induced the highest (p < 0.05) cell proliferation. It is notable that CF and HA induced cell growth, whereas MMC increased (p < 0.05) the deposition of collagen IV, fibronectin, and laminin in the T-LESC culture. Individuals with certain primary immunodeficiency disorders (PID) may be unable to clear poliovirus infection after exposure to oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). Over time, vaccine-related strains can revert to immunodeficiency-associated vaccine-derived poliovirus (iVDPVs) that can cause paralysis in the patient and potentially spread in communities with low immunity. We reviewed the efforts for detection and management of PID patients with iVDPV infections and the epidemiology through an analysis of 184 cases reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) during 1962–2024 and a review of polio program and literature reports. Most iVDPV patients (79%) reported in the WHO Registry were residents in middle-income countries and almost half (48%) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Type 2 iVDPV was most frequently isolated (53%), but a sharp decline was observed after the switch to bivalent OPV in 2016, with only six cases reported during 2017–2024 compared to 63 during 2009–2016. Patients with common variable immunodeficiency have longer excretion of iVDPV than with other PID types. Implementation of sensitive sentinel surveillance to detect cases of iVDPV infection in high-risk countries and offer antiviral treatment to patients is challenged by competition with other health priorities and regulatory hurdles to the compassionate use of investigational antiviral drugs. Cigarette butt littering poses a significant environmental challenge, with billions of butts discarded each year, fouling ecosystems with slow-to-decompose cellulose acetate filters that absorb and release harmful compounds. In response, an innovative, sustainable approach for valorizing ballot bin waste (BBW) by extracting high-quality cellulose acetate from cigarette butts was investigated. This green approach eliminates the need for hazardous acids and toxic solvents, resulting in a yield of 30% (w/w) and a degree of substitution (DS) of 2.0–2.5, which is comparable to pure cellulose acetate. The following four essential processes are involved in this process: filter separation, water washing to remove impurities, ethanol purification, and acetone precipitation of the cellulose acetate. Cigarette butts (CBs) are emerging soil contaminants, releasing chemicals upon contact with moisture. This study examined heavy metal concentrations leached from smoked and unsmoked CBs (Pall Mall, Philip Morris, and Marlboro) into OECD artificial soil and Vertisol soil and their accumulation in white mustard (Sinapis alba L.). Key physiological parameters, including germination rate, plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight, were analyzed, along with the uptake of heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ba, Ti, and Cu) and essential elements (Ca, Mg, Na, and K). Results showed that Mn had the highest bioaccumulation index (BAI = 1.10) in OECD soil, while Zn uptake was consistently high across soil types. Soil type significantly influenced plant height (χ2 = 41.269, p < 0.01) and elemental composition, with Vertisol soil facilitating greater overall growth and heavy metal uptake than OECD soil. MANOVA revealed no three-way interaction among soil type, CB use, and CB brand on elemental uptake. However, two-way interactions, particularly between soil type and CB use (F (4, 39) = 40.233, p < 0.001, Wilk'Λ = 0.195), showed significant effects on heavy metal uptake. The development of the oil industry and the fossil fuel economy has historically improved the quality of life for many people, but it has also led to significant environmental degradation. Among the many environmental challenges we face today, preserving water resources is one of the most pressing. To tackle this issue, researchers are focusing on strategies to reduce water consumption and enhance the efficiency of wastewater treatment. In this context, the present review explores recent advancements in a novel coupled treatment process that integrates adsorption in activated carbon fiber (ACF) and photocatalytic oxidation using TiO2 to remove micropollutants from wastewater. This innovative approach would allow for the in situ and continuous regeneration of ACF with TiO2 photocatalysis, increasing the oxidative degradation efficiencies of the supported semiconductor thanks to the adsorbent material, all under the possibility of a durable and low-cost process using solar radiation. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have shown promise as a delivery system for nucleic acid-based therapeutics, including DNA, siRNA, and mRNA vaccines. The immune system plays a critical role in the response to these nanocarriers, with innate immune cells initiating an early response and adaptive immune cells mediating a more specific reaction, sometimes leading to potential adverse effects. Recent studies have shown that the innate immune response to LNPs is mediated by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and other pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), which recognize the lipid components of the nanoparticles. This recognition can trigger the activation of inflammatory pathways and the production of cytokines and chemokines, leading to potential adverse effects such as fever, inflammation, and pain at the injection site. On the other hand, the adaptive immune response to LNPs appears to be primarily directed against the protein encoded by the mRNA cargo, with little evidence of an ongoing adaptive immune response to the components of the LNP itself. Understanding the relationship between LNPs and the immune system is critical for the development of safe and effective nucleic acid-based delivery systems. In fact, targeting the immune system is essential to develop effective vaccines, as well as therapies against cancer or infections. There is a lack of research in the literature that has systematically studied the factors that influence the interaction between LNPs and the immune system and further research is needed to better elucidate the mechanisms underlying the immune response to LNPs. In this review, we discuss LNPs' composition, physico-chemical properties, such as size, shape, and surface charge, and the protein corona formation which can affect the reactivity of the immune system, thus providing a guide for the research on new formulations that could gain a favorable efficacy/safety profile. The transportation sector is the largest producer of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. Energy-optimal algorithms are proposed to reduce the transportation sector's fuel consumption and emissions. These algorithms optimize vehicles' speed to lower energy consumption and emissions. However, recent studies argued that these algorithms could negatively impact traffic flow, create traffic congestions, and increase fuel consumption on the network-level. To overcome this problem, we propose a collective-energy-optimal adaptive cruise control (collective-ACC). Collective-ACC reduces fuel consumption and emissions by directly optimizing vehicles' trajectories and indirectly by improving traffic flow. Collective-ACC is a bi-objective non-linear integer optimization. This optimization was solved by the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II). Collective-ACC was compared with manual driving and self-centered adaptive cruise control (i.e., conventional energy-optimal adaptive cruise controls (self-centered-ACC)) in a traffic simulation. We found that collective-ACC reduced fuel consumption by up to 49% and 42% compared with manual driving and self-centered-ACC, respectively. Collective-ACC also lowered CO2, CO, NOX, and PMX by up to 54%, 70%, 58%, and 64% from manual driving, respectively. Game theory analyses were conducted to investigate how adopting collective-ACC could impact automakers, consumers, and government agencies. Vinyl ester resins are widely used as thermoset matrix materials for laminated composites, particularly in naval and automotive applications, due to their strength, chemical resistance, and ease of processing. However, their brittleness limits their use, especially in cold conditions. This study investigates the toughness of core–shell rubber (CSR)-modified resins in composites with natural fibers. This research compares the properties of the neat resin matrix and the CSR-modified matrix. After optimizing the resin curing process with catalysts, various treatments were tested to analyze their mechanical and thermal properties. Using the vacuum bagging process, flax and glass fibers were used as reinforcements to assess the effects of matrix modifications. Flax fibers were chosen for their sustainability as a potential alternative to glass fibers. Mechanical testing was performed, comparing the performance of flax-based composites to those with glass fibers. Water absorption tests on flax composites followed the ISO 62 standard. Additionally, interlaminar shear strength and SEM micrography studies were conducted to examine the morphology and fiber–matrix adhesion, linking the microscopic structure to mechanical properties. Results indicate that while glass-reinforced composites have superior properties, flax composites offer a sustainable alternative, making them a promising choice for future applications. CD155, also known as the poliovirus receptor (PVR), is a crucial molecule in the development and progression of cancer, as its overexpression favors immune evasion and resistance to immunotherapy. However, little is known about the mechanisms that regulate its overexpression. Proinflammatory factors produced by various cellular components of the tumor microenvironment (TME) have been associated with CD155 expression. We analyzed the effect of interleukin (IL)-6 on CD155 expression in lung adenocarcinoma. We found a positive relationship between mRNA and protein levels. This correlation was also observed in bioinformatics analysis and in biopsies and serum from patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Interestingly, lung adenocarcinoma cell lines expressing suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) did not show increased CD155 levels upon IL-6 stimulation, and SOCS1 silencing reverted this effect. IL-6 and SOCS1 are critical regulators of CD155 expression in lung adenocarcinoma. Further basic and clinical studies are needed to define the role of these molecules during tumor development and to improve their clinical impact as biomarkers and targets for predicting the efficacy of immunotherapies. Substantial agricultural waste, including winter jujube residues, pits, and sawdust, is generated during the planting and processing of winter jujubes. To recycle these wastes, they were used to cultivate Stropharia rugosoannulata. The nutrient composition, mineral elements, 179 pesticide residues, and heavy metals in the wastes and S. rugosoannulata were tested. Cultivating the liquid spawn of S. rugosoannulata with 40 g/L winter jujube residue as a substitute for glucose significantly increased the mycelial pellets' biomass by 136%, resulting in more uniform pellets. Secondary strains of S. rugosoannulata were cultured using winter jujube pits, showing no significant difference in mycelial growth rate and vigor compared to the control (CK) across additive levels of 10–30%. The fruit bodies of S. rugosoannulata cultivated with winter jujube sawdust exhibited no detectable pesticide residues and a lower heavy metal content than the allowable limits, with a protein content of 36.7 g/100 g. Additionally, the mineral element potassium surpassed sodium by over 200 times, rendering it a potassium-rich, low-sodium food source. Utilizing winter jujube wastes for S. rugosoannulata cultivation effectively repurposed these wastes through sustainable recycling. Trees positively improve the annual thermal comfort of the built environment in tropical areas, where climate change is slight throughout the year. However, for areas with high changes in climate all year, the current studies have only explored the summer cooling performance of trees without the impact of different types of trees on annual thermal comfort, especially in cold seasons. Therefore, to quantify the impacts and scientifically guide the optimization of green space layout in hot summer and cold winter areas, this study selected Changsha City as the study area and analyzed how the annual thermal comfort is affected by evergreen trees and deciduous trees, which are two common types of trees in hot summer and cold winter areas. The analytical results indicated that the difference in the effect of deciduous and evergreen trees on outdoor thermal comfort was insignificant in summer, where the difference in the monthly mean PET for the three summer months was slight, being 0.28 °C, 0.14 °C, and 0.29 °C, respectively. However, evergreen trees greatly exacerbated winter cold compared to deciduous trees, with a monthly mean PET decrease by nearly 1.0 °C and an hourly PET reduced by up to 3.57 °C. The difference is mainly attributed to the absorption and reflection of solar radiation by the tree canopy, as well as the cooling and humidifying effect of the tree leaf. In hot summer and cold winter areas, outdoor thermal comfort is still in the "comfortable" and "slightly warm" acceptable stage despite the warming effect of deciduous trees in the spring and autumn seasons. Planting evergreen trees is an inevitable thermal mitigation choice for tropical areas. However, for the areas with high annual climate change, such as hot summer and cold winter areas in China, a change in empirical tree planting patterns and selecting deciduous trees where appropriate will improve year-round outdoor thermal comfort. As the global energy demand rises and climate change creates more challenges, optimizing the performance of non-residential buildings becomes essential. Traditional simulation-based optimization methods often fall short due to computational inefficiency and their time-consuming nature, limiting their practical application. This study introduces a new optimization framework that integrates Bayesian optimization, XGBoost algorithms, and multi-objective genetic algorithms (GA) to enhance building performance metrics—total energy (TE), indoor overheating degree (IOD), and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD)—for historical (2020), mid-future (2050), and future (2080) scenarios. The framework employs IOD as a key performance indicator (KPI) to optimize building design and operation. While traditional indices such as the predicted mean vote (PMV) and the thermal sensation vote (TSV) are widely used, they often fail to capture individual comfort variations and the dynamic nature of thermal conditions. IOD addresses these gaps by providing a comprehensive and objective measure of thermal discomfort, quantifying both the frequency and severity of overheating events. Alongside IOD, the energy use intensity (EUI) index is used to assess energy consumption per unit area, providing critical insights into energy efficiency. The integration of IOD with EUI and PPD enhances the overall assessment of building performance, creating a more precise and holistic framework. This combination ensures that energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and occupant well-being are optimized in tandem. By addressing a significant gap in existing methodologies, the current approach combines advanced optimization techniques with modern simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, resulting in a more efficient and accurate model to optimize building performance. Utilizing SHAP (SHapley Additive Explanations) analysis, this research identified key design factors that influence performance metrics. Specifically, the window-to-wall ratio (WWR) impacts TE by increasing energy consumption through higher heat gain and cooling demand. Outdoor temperature (Tout) has a complex effect on TE depending on seasonal conditions, while indoor temperature (Tin) has a minor impact on TE. For PPD, Tout is a major negative factor, indicating that improved natural ventilation can reduce thermal discomfort, whereas higher Tin and larger open areas exacerbate it. Regarding IOD, both WWR and Tin significantly affect internal heat gains, with larger windows and higher indoor temperatures contributing to increased heat and reduced thermal comfort. Vicia sativa L., commonly known as the common vetch, is an annual, self-pollinating legume used primarily as fodder both by livestock and wildlife. Additionally, it contributes to environmental balance through nitrogen fixation and the improvement of soil properties. The phenotypic, genetic, and metabolite variability among four advanced lines (BK45, BK29, BK23, BK27) and two commercial varieties (M-6900, BI-65) of V. sativa were evaluated in order to be used for future breeding programs aimed at producing genetically improved varieties. BK45 was the most promising line due to its high genetic polymorphism, but also because it exhibited a significant amount of seed production and high seed quality based on its metabolomics profile. A stepwise multiple regression analysis (MRA) revealed a relationship between SCoT alleles, seed, and biomass yield. Additionally, several statistically significant marker bands linked to metabolites were found using the SCoT marker analysis. Hence, data assessed via MRA may be helpful in marker-assisted breeding programs. With the advancement of modernization, traditional bazaars have encountered challenges, such as diminished vitality. Concurrently, the trend of integrating cultural spaces into bazaars has become increasingly evident. Understanding the relationship between bazaars and cultural spaces, as well as the preferences of users of these spaces, is crucial for enhancing bazaar vitality. Employing field research, questionnaire surveys, cross-analysis, and the narrative preference method, this paper compares the bazaar cultural spaces of Central Asia and Chinese from four perspectives: the current state of the bazaar, development overview, user preferences, and cultural space type preferences. This aims to deepen the understanding of the commonalities and differences between the two regions, and to explore the development trends of bazaars and their cultural spaces. The study reveals that (1) Spaces with diversified functions, high accessibility, and openness can enhance the vitality of the bazaar; (2) There exists a synergistic, mutually beneficial relationship between the bazaar and the cultural spaces; (3) Central Asian residents place greater emphasis on the environmental quality of the bazaar and the engaging content of its cultural spaces. In contrast, Chinese residents are more focused on the accessibility of the bazaar and the openness of the cultural spaces; (4) The function of art and culture is the preferred type of cultural space in the bazaar among residents of both regions. The Italian sporting event 'XIV Convittiadi' involving students at boarding schools took place in Molise region, central Italy, in April 2022. The study describes the public health protocol with specific countermeasures developed for the event, including testing, isolation, and contact tracing during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reports the main related findings. There were 590 Italian white participants, with 514 athletes (mean age 13.6 ± 1.6 years) and 76 accompanying teachers/guardians (50 ± 8.7 years) of 21 boarding schools from different Italian regions. During the event, 1281 antigenic swabs were performed, and twelve COVID-19 cases were promptly identified due to active screening, involving ten (83.3%) athletes and two (16.7%) accompanying teachers. Among the infected athletes, 83.3% complained mild symptoms, either before or after the ascertained positivity, and 40% had received primary cycle vaccination and booster, or only completed the primary course. The enhanced surveillance and contact tracing activities allowed identifying 34 participants as close contacts who were subjected to a daily follow-up that revealed only four (11.8%) as infected. Since in mass gathering events public health risk is not clear and could not be available through the traditional surveillance systems, increased monitoring activities are necessary. The practical approach implemented for this event was valuable for SARS-CoV-2 control and case management either among participants, or the host country population, suggesting its application to other airborne communicable diseases. The aluminum terephthalate (MIL-53) metal–organic framework (MOF) (MIL-53(Al)) was evaluated as an adsorbent for removing phosphates from aqueous solutions. XRD and FTIR were used to confirm the molecular structure. TGA/DSC was used to measure its stability. The green synthesizing MIL-53(Al) showed good performance as a highly efficient adsorbent. The adsorbed MIL-53(Al) nanoparticles still retain their original morphology according to SEM, allowing it to be easily separated from the aqueous solution via filtration. Additionally, the thermal stability of synthesized MIL-53(Al) is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 500 °C, as confirmed by TGA/DSC. Using different initial concentrations of Na2HPO4 and ICP-OES measurements, we determined the adsorption values of Na2HPO4 by MIL-53(Al) as a function of time. Three kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich) and three isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin) were used to evaluate the phosphate adsorption behavior of MIL-53(Al) powder in Na2HPO4 aqueous solution. Error functions are used to evaluate various kinetic and isotherm models related to different physical processes. From the analysis of the adsorption experiments, the Elovich model is the best-fitting kinetic model, showing that the adsorption rate decreases with increasing adsorption capacity. Furthermore, error function analysis identified the Freundlich model as the most suitable, indicating that complicated adsorption coexists with physisorption, and chemisorption synergistically drives the adsorption process. The module utilizing MIL-53(Al) hollow fibers also demonstrated preliminary attempts at phosphate adsorption and desorption for the first time. Bacterial Lysates are immunostimulants clinically prescribed for the prevention of respiratory tract infections (RTIs). It has been shown that Bacterial Lysates upregulate the immune system, acting both on innate and adaptive reactions. In fact, there are demonstrations of their efficacy in restoring the integrity and immune function of epithelial barriers, activating ILC3 and dendritic cells with an enhanced Th1 response, and producing serum IgG and serum and salivary IgA specific to the administered bacterial antigens. The activated immune system also protects against other bacteria and viruses due to a trained immunity effect. Most studies show that the number of RTIs and their severity decrease in Bacterial Lysates-pretreated patients, without relevant side effects. The Bacterial Lysates treatment, in addition to reducing the number of RTIs, also prevents the deterioration of the underlying disease (i.e., COPD) induced by repeated infections. Despite these positive data, the most recent meta-analyses evidence the weakness of the studies performed, which are of low quality and have an inadequate number of patients, some of which were non-randomized while others were without a control group or were performed contemporarily in different clinical conditions or with different ages. The high heterogeneity of the studies does not allow us to state Bacterial Lysates' effectiveness in preventing RTIs with sufficient certainty. To completely define their indications, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter, randomized clinical trials should be performed for each product and for each indication. Heterogeneous Advanced Oxidation Processes (H-AOPs) are considered a new process for removing emerging pollutants. In this case, the high reactivity of hydroxyl radicals is used to degrade persistent organic pollutants. This review explores the state-of-the-art catalyst for hydroxyl radical generation in AOPs. As a parasite reaction, chloride ions appear in alkaline conditions and compete with the active sites. The theoretical foundation of catalyst performance is explored, focusing on the fundamental principles that govern the efficiency and mechanism of hydroxyl or chloride radical production. The concept of intelligence has many applications, such as in coatings and cyber security. Smart coatings have the ability to sense and/or respond to external stimuli and generally interact with their environment. Self-healing coatings represent a significant advance in improving material durability and performance using microcapsules and nanocontainers loaded with self-healing agents, catalysts, corrosion inhibitors, and water-repellents. These smart coatings can repair damage on their own and restore mechanical properties without external intervention and are inspired by biological systems. Properties that are affected by either momentary or continuous external stimuli in smart coatings include corrosion, fouling, fungal, self-healing, piezoelectric, and microbiological properties. These coating properties can be obtained via combinations of either organic or inorganic polymer phases, additives, and pigments. In this article, a review of the advancements in micro/nanocapsules for self-healing coatings is reported from the aspect of extrinsic self-healing ability. The concept of extrinsic self-healing coatings is based on the use of capsules or multichannel vascular systems loaded with healing agents/inhibitors. The result is that self-healing coatings exhibit improved properties compared to traditional coatings. Governments across the world are facing challenges in urgently responding to the adverse impacts of climate change. Australian cities have been proactively working on various climate action plans. Despite this, the Climate Action Tracker rates Australia's climate net zero targets, policies, and climate finance as "Insufficient", highlighting the urgent need for substantial improvements to align Australia's climate policies and commitments towards the Paris Agreement. This study explores the readiness of Australian cities towards climate change mitigation, with a focus on Sydney. It identifies prioritized cooling measures and proactive local governments in Great Metropolitan Sydney, through an analysis of official documents and policy statements. Interviews were conducted with local governments to gain insights into implementation processes, perceived effectiveness, challenges, and opportunities related to heat mitigation initiatives. The results reveal efforts to amend local environmental and development control plans to mitigate the urban heat island effect and create cooler, more comfortable built environments. However, challenges exist, including limited authority of local governments in urban planning, as national and state governments set stringent codes and regulations for heat mitigation. Financial constraints pose challenges, particularly in maintaining and monitoring strategic plans during their implementation stage, leading to the potential removal of sustainability measures from designs. The fluid pump was the key component of the formation tester; the pump cylinder, piston, and piston rod of the fluid pump often suffer from wear scratches and seal failure, which greatly reduces the service reliability of the instrument. To improve the wear resistance of the fluid pump, 17-4PH steel specimens were treated by boronizing at 750 °C for 20 h. Specimens with and without boronizing were studied by OM, SEM, XRD, microhardness test, and wear resistance test. Layers of about 60 μm thickness formed during boronization contain a mixture of FeB, CrB, and α(B)-Fe phases, which leads to a significant improvement in microhardness (from 336 to 980 HV) and wear rate (from 16.4 × 10−5 mm3/Nm to 3.3 × 10−5 mm3/Nm). The pump cylinder and the fluid-pump piston rod were boronized and assembled into the pumping module, which passed the indoor durability test for 90 h and did not show obvious surface wear after 60 h of field experience. The present study considers the samples of an Ti-6Al-4V alloy obtained by selective laser melting with the addition of a 10% Cu-Al powder mixture. The microstructure, elemental composition and phase composition, as well as the physico-chemical properties, have been investigated by the methods of electron microscopy, X-ray phase analysis, and bending testing. The obtained samples have a relative density of 98.5 ± 0.1%. The addition of the Cu-Al powder mixture facilitates supercooling during crystallization and solidification, which allows decreasing the size and changing the shape of the initial β-Ti grains. The constant cooling rate of the alloy typical for the SLM technology has been shown to be able to prevent martensitic transformation. The formation of a structure that consists of β-Ti grains, a dispersed eutectoid mixture of α-Ti and Ti2Cu grains, and a solid solution of Al in Cu has been revealed. In the case of doping by the 10% Cu-Al mixture, the physico-mechanical properties are improved. The hardness of the samples amounts to 390 HRC, with the bending strength being 1550 ± 20 MPa and deformation of 3.5 ± 0.2%. The developed alloy can be recommended for applications in the production of parts of jet and car engines, implants for medicine, and corrosion-resistant parts for the chemical industry. Shopping malls have become vibrant public spaces, serving as commercial centers and sociocultural hubs. However, the arrangement of stationary elements such as elevators and escalators significantly impacts the visual quality of the atrium and the overall navigation experience within the complex. This research focuses on analyzing the configuration of elevators and escalators in shopping mall atriums and their influence on visual richness and accessibility. Descriptive-analytical and survey methods are employed, utilizing data from 10 successful malls worldwide. The UCL-Depth map software and space syntax variables are used for analysis. Connectivity, clustering-coefficient, and controllability analyses assess visual richness, while integration, mean-depth, entropy, depth, step-depth, and gate-count analyses evaluate accessibility. The research includes a questionnaire to obtain optimal indices for each space syntax variable, enhancing the accuracy of the findings. The results highlight the significant impact of the positioning of vertical access elements within the atrium on its visual richness and the accessibility of shops. The research identifies an optimal configuration: placing the escalator in the middle of the atrium, deviating 30° from the entrance axis, and separately locating the elevators. This configuration provides the highest level of access to shops and the central atrium from any point, minimizing the number of turns required to reach different locations within the mall. Furthermore, the separate placement of elevators improves the flow of individuals between shops and the atrium, resulting in increased integration. In conclusion, selecting an appropriate configuration of elevators and escalators in shopping mall atriums can greatly enhance wayfinding and improve the visual richness and accessibility of the complex. Architects and designers can utilize these findings to optimize the design of public spaces within shopping centers, promoting social interactions and enhancing the overall visitor experience. Commercially available 316L (1.4404) stainless steel is commonly used for industrial filtration due to its combination of good material properties, particularly its corrosion resistance, which is a critical factor for filters in corrosive (e.g., saltwater) environments. Recently, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has enabled new more complex and efficient filtration pieces to be manufactured from this material. However, it is critical to know how the corrosion resistance is affected by this manufacturing strategy. Here, the corrosion resistance of LPBF manufactured 316L stainless steel is compared with wrought 316L sheet. The corrosion of the samples in saltwater was assessed with asymmetric electrochemical noise, potentiodynamic polarisation curve, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The samples before and after corrosion were examined with scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The LPBF samples had higher corrosion resistance than the sheet samples and were more noble. The corrosion resistance of the LPBF sample increased with time, while the wrought sample corrosion resistance reduced over time. The corrosion mechanism of both samples was stable with time, formed of a passive film process and a bared material process. The rapid and sensitive detection of bacterial contaminants using low-cost and portable point-of-need (PoN) biosensors has gained significant interest in water quality monitoring. Cell-imprinted polymers (CIPs) are emerging as effective and inexpensive materials for bacterial detection as they provide specific binding sites designed to capture whole bacterial cells, especially when integrated into PoN microfluidic devices. However, improving the sensitivity and detection limits of these sensors remains challenging. In this study, we integrated CIP-functionalized stainless steel microwires (CIP-MWs) into a microfluidic device for the impedimetric detection of E. coli bacteria. The sensor featured two parallel microchannels with three-electrode configurations that allowed simultaneous control and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. A CIP-MW and a non-imprinted polymer (NIP)-MW suspended perpendicular to the microchannels served as the working electrodes in the test and control channels, respectively. Electrochemical spectra were fitted with equivalent electrical circuits, and the charge transfer resistances of both cells were measured before and after incubation with target bacteria. The charge transfer resistance of the CIP-MWs after 30 min of incubation with bacteria was increased. By normalizing the change in charge transfer resistance and analyzing the dose–response curve for bacterial concentrations ranging from 0 to 107 CFU/mL, we determined the limits of detection and quantification as 2 × 102 CFU/mL and 1.4 × 104 CFU/mL, respectively. The sensor demonstrated a dynamic range of 102 to 107 CFU/mL, where bacterial counts were statistically distinguishable. High-strength aluminium alloys are prone to porosity and cracking during laser-based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) due to the complex solidification behaviour, thus limiting the preparation of high-quality aluminium alloys. In order to effectively reduce the defect formation, this study investigated the influence mechanism of different process parameters on the formation of porosity and cracks in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys in the PBF-LB/M process by combining experimental and numerical simulation. The degree of influence of the process parameters on the temperature field and the temperature field on the defect formation was also quantified using path analysis. The results show that modulation of the process parameters can effectively reduce the formation of cracks and pores, although it is difficult to eliminate them. The melt pool temperature has a significant effect on the formation of porosity, and the temperature gradient has a significant effect on the formation of cracks. The degree of influence of laser power on the melt pool temperature and temperature gradient was greater than that of scanning speed, with values of 0.980 and 0.989, respectively. Cancer, the second leading cause of death worldwide, demands the identification of modifiable risk factors to optimize its prevention. Diet has emerged as a pivotal focus in current research efforts. This literature review aims to enhance the ACS guidelines on diet and cancer by integrating the latest findings and addressing unresolved questions. The methodology involved an advanced PubMed search with specific filters relevant to the research topic. Topics covered include time-restricted diet, diet quality, acid load, counseling, exercise and diet combination, Mediterranean diet, vegetarian and pescetarian diets, weight loss, dairy consumption, coffee and tea, iron, carbohydrates, meat, fruits and vegetables, heavy metals, micronutrients, and phytoestrogens. The review highlights the benefits of the Mediterranean diet in reducing cancer risk. Adherence to overnight fasting or carbohydrate consumption may contribute to cancer prevention, but excessive fasting may harm patients' quality of life. A vegetarian/pescetarian diet is associated with lower risks of general and colorectal cancer compared to a carnivorous diet. High heme and total iron intake are linked to increased lung cancer risk, while phytoestrogen intake is associated with reduced risk. Coffee and tea have a neutral impact on cancer risk. Cancer continues to be a prominent issue in healthcare systems, resulting in approximately 9.9 million fatalities in 2020. It is the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Although there are difficulties in treating cancer at both the genetic and phenotypic levels, many cancer patients seek supplementary and alternative medicines to cope with their illness, relieve symptoms, and reduce the side effects of cytotoxic drug therapy. Consequently, there is an increasing emphasis on studying natural products that have the potential to prevent or treat cancer. Cancer cells depend on multiple hallmarks to secure survival. These hallmarks include sustained proliferation, apoptosis inactivation, stimulation of angiogenesis, immune evasion, and altered metabolism. Several natural products from food were reported to target multiple cancer hallmarks and can be used as adjuvant interventions to augment conventional therapies. This review summarizes the main active ingredients in food that have anticancer activities with a comprehensive discussion of the mechanisms of action. Thymoquinone, allicin, resveratrol, parthenolide, Epigallocatechin gallate, and piperine are promising anticancer bioactive ingredients in food. Exfoliated graphite (ExG) embedded in a polymeric matrix represents an accessible, cost-effective, and sustainable method for generating nanosized graphite-based polymer composites with multifunctional properties. This review article analyzes diverse methods currently used to exfoliate graphite into graphite nanoplatelets, few-layer graphene, and polymer-assisted graphene. It also explores engineered methods for small-scale pilot production of polymer nanocomposites. It highlights the chemistry involved during the graphite intercalation and exfoliation process, particularly emphasizing the interfacial interactions related to steric repulsion forces, van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking, and covalent bonds. These interactions promote the dispersion and stabilization of the graphite derivative structures in polymeric matrices. Finally, it compares the enhanced properties of nanocomposites, such as increased thermal and electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications, with those of neat polymer materials. A primary driving force of today's urban environment is the development or enhancement of building stock with a focus on minimizing its environmental footprint, eliminating its dependence on fossil fuels, enforcing its energy efficiency and self-sufficiency, and helping alleviate climate change. Therefore, in the present study, an up-to-date review regarding the passive building retrofitting techniques for sustainable and energy efficiency design is conducted. Numerous passive building solutions and design concepts are thoroughly examined in terms of innovation and energy-saving potential. The examined techniques include novel thermal insulation materials, innovative windows systems, high thermal mass technologies, optically advanced coatings appropriate for cooling abatement, and various energy-efficient bioclimatic designs, for instance, shading techniques, mechanical ventilation in combination with heat recovery, and green roofs and façades. The scope of the present review is to thoroughly and comparatively investigate passive building energy retrofit solutions as presented in the recent scientific literature mainly within the last five or up to ten years. The passive, energy-mitigating solutions are examined in terms of energy savings primarily in residential buildings, but also in tertiary buildings, as well as of specific investment costs. Lastly, an extensive discussion evaluating the comparative advantages and disadvantages of the examined passive envelope technologies is conducted, allowing a comprehensive and multilevel comparison. The aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic significance of leptin receptor isoforms in adrenal tumors. In a single-center study, 96 patients (19 with adrenal cortical carcinoma and 77 with benign tumors) underwent an adrenalectomy. A total of 14 unaffected adrenal gland tissues from kidney donors were used as controls. Fasting blood samples were collected for laboratory tests, and mRNA expressions of leptin receptor isoforms were assessed by RT-qPCR. The study analyzed correlations between mRNA expressions and clinical data and measured NCI-H295R cell proliferation via a real-time cell analyzer. All adrenal lesions expressed leptin receptor isoforms. Significantly lower LepR1 expression was observed in carcinoma tissues than in adenomas and controls (p = 0.016). Expressions of LepR3&LepR6 were correlated with overall survival (p = 0.036), while LepR2&LepR4 and LepR5 expressions were inversely related to morning serum cortisol levels (p = 0.041). Leptin reduced NCI-H295R cell proliferation (p < 0.0001). The study highlights the diagnostic and prognostic significance of leptin receptor isoforms in adrenal tumors.
