Breeding for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is becoming more important as global uncertainty makes the production and application of nitrogen (N) fertilizers more expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Despite this, most cereal breeding programs still use yield-related components as proxies for NUE, likely due to the prohibitive cost and time of collecting and analyzing samples through traditional lab-based methods. Drone-based NUE phenotyping provides a viable and scalable alternative as it is quicker, non-destructive, and consistent. Here, we present a study that utilized financially accessible cost-effective drones mounted with red-green-blue (RGB) image sensors coupled with the open-source AirMeasurer platform and advanced statistical analysis to exclude low-NUE lines in multi-seasonal field experiments. The method helped us to identify high N agronomic use efficiency lines but was less effective with a high N recovery efficiency line. We found that the drone-powered approach was very effective at 180 kg N per hectare (N180, an optimized N-rate) as it completely removed low-NUE wheat lines in the trial, which would facilitate breeders to quickly reduce the number of lines taken through multi-year breeding programs. Hence, this encouraging and scalable approach demonstrates its ability to conduct NUE phenotyping in wheat. With continuous refinements in field experiments, this method would be employable as an openly accessible platform to identify NUE lines at different N-rates for breeding and resource use efficiency studies in wheat. Analysis of the heavy fractions in crude oil has been important in petroleum industries. It is well known that heavy fractions such as vacuum gas oils (VGOs) include heteroatoms, of which sulfur and nitrogen are often characterized in many cases. We conducted research regarding the molecular species analysis of VGOs. Further refine processes using VGOs are becoming important when considering carbon recycling. In this work, we attempted to classify compounds within VGOs provided by Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. Two VGOs were priorly distillated from Kuwait Export crude and Lower Fars crude. Quantitative analysis was performed mainly using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS). MALDI-TOF-MS has been developed for analyzing high-molecular-weight compounds such as polymer and biopolymers. As matrix selection is one of the most important aspects in MALDI-TOFMS, the careful selection of a matrix was firstly evaluated, followed by analysis using a Kendrick plot with nominal mass series (z*). The objective was to evaluate if this work could provide an effective classification of VGOs compounds. The Kendrick plot is a well-known method for processing mass data. The difference in the Kendrick mass defect (KMD) between CnH2n−14S and CnH2n−20O is only 0.0005 mass units, which makes it difficult in general to distinguish these compounds. However, since the z* value showed effective differences during the classification of these compounds, qualitative analysis could be possible. Nitrogen is an important nutrient element for crop growth. Rapid and accurate acquisition of nitrogen content in cultivation substrate is the key to precise fertilization. In this study, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to detect the total nitrogen (TN) of coco-peat substrate. A LIBS spectrum acquisition system was established to collect the spectral line signal of samples with wavelengths ranging from 200 nm to 860 nm. Synergy interval partial least squares (Si-PLS) algorithm and elimination of uninformative variables (UVE) algorithm were used to select the spectral data of TN characteristic lines in coco-peat substrate. Univariate calibration curve and partial least squares regression (PLSR) were used to build mathematical models for the relationship between the spectral data of univariate characteristic spectral lines, full variables and screened multi-variable characteristic spectral lines of samples and reference measurement values of TN. By comparing the detection performance of calibration curves and multivariate spectral prediction models, it was concluded that UVE was used to simplify the number of spectral input variables for the model and PLSR was applied to construct the simplest multivariate model for the measurement of TN in the substrate samples. The model provided the best measurement performance, with the calibration set determination coefficient ( R C 2 ) and calibration set root mean square error (RMSEC) values of 0.9944 and 0.0382%, respectively; the prediction set determination coefficient ( R P 2 ) and prediction set root mean square error (RMSEP) had values of 0.9902 and 0.0513%, respectively. These results indicated that the combination of UVE and PLSR could make full use of the variable information related to TN detection in the LIBS spectrum and realize the rapid and high-performance measurement of TN in coco-peat substrate. Nitrogen pollution in water environments has reached critical levels globally, primarily stemming from agricultural runoff, industrial discharges, and untreated sewage. The excessive presence of nitrogen compounds poses a significant threat to water quality, leading to adverse impacts on ecosystems and human health. Reaching a breakthrough in the technology of constructed wetlands (CWs) for mitigating nitrogen pollution is hindered by existing knowledge gaps regarding the mechanisms involved in the removal process. Reaching this understanding, we offer a comprehensive summary of current advancements and theories in this research field. Initially, bibliometric techniques were employed to identify yearly patterns in publications and areas of research focus. Subsequently, the chosen documents underwent statistical analysis using VOSviewer_1.6.20 to determine countries' annual productivity, significant publication years, influential authors, keyword clustering analysis, and more. Finally, a comprehensive overview is provided on the elimination of nitrogen through CWs, encompassing insights into microbial communities and structure types. This analysis aims to uncover potential strategies for optimizing the rate of nitrogen removal. Furthermore, this study elucidates the current research trend concerning the nitrogen removal performance of CWs and identifies challenges and future research directions in this field. As a biological alternative to the antimicrobial action of SO2, bioprotection has been proposed to winemakers as a means to limit or prevent grape musts microbial alteration. Competition for nitrogenous nutrients and for oxygen are often cited as potential explanations for the effectiveness of bioprotection. This study analyses the effect of a bioprotective M. pulcherrima strain on the growth of one H. valbyensis strain and one H. uvarum strain. Bioprotection efficiency was observed only against H. valbyensis inoculated at the two lowest concentrations. These results indicate a potential species-dependent efficiency of the bioprotective strain and a strong impact of the initial ratio between bioprotective and apiculate yeasts. The analysis of the consumption of nitrogen compounds revealed that leucine, isoleucine, lysine and tryptophan were consumed preferentially by all three strains. The weaker assimilation percentages of these amino acids observed in H. valbyensis at 24 h growth suggest competition with M. pulcherrima that could negatively affects the growth of the apiculate yeast in co-cultures. The slowest rate of O2 consumption of H. valbyensis strain, in comparison with M. pulcherrima, was probably not involved in the bioprotective effect. Non-targeted metabolomic analyses of M. pulcherrima and H. valbyensis co-culture indicate that the interaction between both strains particularly impact lysin and tryptophan metabolisms. Nitrogen (N) is abundant in the atmosphere as N2, which is converted into reactive forms (Nr) for plant assimilation. In pre-industrial times, atmospheric N2 conversion to Nr balanced Nr reconversion to N2, but 20th-century human activity intensified this conversion via synthetic fertilizers, biological N2 fixation, and fossil fuel burning. The surplus of Nr detrimentally impacts ecosystems and human well-being. This study aimed to assess the N use efficiency in the soil–plant system of the soybean-corn succession ( S P S S , C ) in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil's midwest. We estimated N macrofluxes in S P S S , C and identified key agro-environmental indicators. Between 2008 and 2020, the yearly sowed area for the S P S S , C increased by 3.3-fold (currently 7.3 million ha). The average annual input of net anthropogenic Nr, average annual N balance, and N loss in S P S S , C was estimated to be ~204 kg [N] ha−1, 57 kg [N] ha−1, and 30 kg [N] ha−1, respectively, indicating persistent N accumulation and loss. The average results of the agronomic efficiency and N retention indicator in the S P S S , C was 0.71 and 0.90, respectively. Modest N use efficiency results reflect N loss effects. Moderate control of rice tillering and the development of rice varieties with large panicles are important topics for future high-yield rice breeding. Herein, we found that low-tillering rice varieties stopped tillering earlier and had a larger leaf area of the sixth leaf. Notably, at 28 days after sowing, the rice seedlings of the low-tillering group had an average single-culm above-ground biomass of 0.84 g, significantly higher than that of the multi-tillering group by 56.26%, and their NSC (non-structural carbohydrate) and starch contents in sheaths were increased by 43.34% and 97.75%, respectively. These results indicated that the low-tillering group of rice varieties had a stronger ability to store photosynthetic products in the form of starch in their sheaths, which was thus more beneficial for their large panicle development. The results of carbon and nitrogen metabolism analyses showed that the low-tillering group had a relatively strong carbon metabolism activity, which was more favorable for the accumulation of photosynthesis products and the following development of large panicles, while the multi-tillering group showed relatively strong nitrogen metabolism activity, which was more beneficial for the development and formation of new organs, such as tillers. Accordingly, in the low-tillering rice varieties, the up-regulated genes were enriched in the pathways mainly related to the synthesis of carbohydrates, while the down-regulated genes were mainly enriched in the nitrogen metabolism pathways. Leaf senescence is an important developmental process for deciduous trees during which part of leaf nitrogen is remobilized to branches, thus being beneficial for nitrogen conservation. However, the associated regulatory mechanism remains largely unknown in deciduous trees. In this study, nitrogen dynamics and transcriptomic activity in senescing leaves were measured during autumnal senescence in hybrid poplar. Both concentrations of leaf total nitrogen (N) and amine compounds were found to decline from the pre-senescence (PRE) to the middle-senescence (MS) stage. Although the total N concentration decreased further from MS to the late-senescence (LS) and leveled off to abscission (ABS) stage, amine compound concentration increased continuously from MS to ABS, suggesting that translocation of amine compounds underperformed production of amine compounds in leaves during this period. L-glutamate, L-glutamine and α-aminoadipic acid were the top three amine compounds accumulated in senescent leaves. RNA-Seq profiling identified thousands of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with functional association with a metabolic transition towards disassimilation. Many genes encoding amino acid metabolism enzymes and amino acid transporters (AATs) were up-regulated. Comparison of expression trend with leaf N dynamics and phylogenetic analysis identified several PtAATs which exhibited down-regulation from MS to LS stage and putatively limited leaf N remobilization. Vanadium (IV) chalcogenide materials are of increasing interest for use in catalysis and energy conversion-related applications. Since no ternary compounds are yet known in the V–Se–Te system, we studied ternary VwSeyTe2−y (w = 1.10, 1.13; y = 0.42, 0.72) phases crystallizing in space group P 3 ¯ m1 (no. 164). Two single-crystal specimens with differing compositions of a solid solution were obtained using the ceramic method. All products were characterized by either single-crystal or powder X-ray diffraction. The lattice parameters increase with rising tellurium content in accordance with the larger ionic radius of the tellurium anion compared to selenium. The chemical compositions were confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, magnetic measurements mostly revealed antiferromagnetic properties. Simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric analyses in a nitrogen atmosphere showed endothermic decomposition accompanied by the formation of VN. The decomposition of VSe and VTe was observed in an argon atmosphere. The results of this work can serve as a basis for the synthesis of new phases in the V–Se–Te and related vanadium chalcogenide systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A newly produced silk fibroin (SF) aerogel particulate system using a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2)-assisted drying technology is herein proposed for biomedical applications. Different concentrations of silk fibroin (3%, 5%, and 7% (w/v)) were explored to investigate the potential of this technology to produce size- and porosity-controlled particles. Laser diffraction, helium pycnometry, nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy were performed to characterize the physicochemical properties of the material. The enzymatic degradation profile of the SF aerogel particles was evaluated by immersion in protease XIV solution, and the biological properties by cell viability and cell proliferation assays. The obtained aerogel particles were mesoporous with high and concentration dependent specific surface area (203–326 m2/g). They displayed significant antioxidant activity and sustained degradation in the presence of protease XIV enzyme. The in vitro assessment using human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) confirm the particles' biocompatibility, as well as the enhancement in cell viability and proliferation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, for the first time, TG-DSC and TG-FTIR investigations of potential pharmaceutics, i.e., analgesic and anticancer active annelated triazinones (1–9) have been presented. The thermal behaviour of these molecules was established in oxidative and inert conditions. The solid–liquid phase transition for each compound (1–9) was documented by one sharp DSC peak confirming the high purity of each sample studied. All the molecules were characterised in terms of calorimetric changes and mass changes during their heating. They revealed high thermal stability in oxidative and inert conditions. The observed tendency in thermal stability changes in relation to a substituent present at the phenyl moiety was found to be similar in air and nitrogen. It was confirmed that annelated triazinones 1–9 were stable up to a temperature range of 241–296 °C in air, and their decomposition process proceeded in two stages under oxidative conditions. In addition, it was established that their thermal stability in air decreased in the following order of R at the phenyl moiety: 4-Cl > 3,4-Cl2 > H > 3-Cl > 4-CH3 > 2-CH3 > 3-CH3 > 2-Cl > 2-OCH3. The volatile decomposition products of the investigated molecules were proposed by comparing the FTIR spectra collected during their thermogravimetric analysis in nitrogen with the spectra from the database of reference compounds. None of annelated triazinones 1–9 underwent any polymorphic transformation during thermal studies. All the compounds proved to be safe for erythrocytes. In turn, molecules 3, 6, and 9 protected red blood cells from oxidative damage, and therefore may be helpful in the prevention of free radical-mediated diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) pose significant therapeutic challenges. Despite the advancement of treatment methods, they are still characterised by a poor prognosis. The isotopic abundance of oral cancers reflects their biology. A better understanding of OSCC biology may improve treatment outcomes. In this study, the isotopic compositions of the nitrogen and carbon of OSCC tissue samples were investigated across different oral cancer localisations. The correlations between the isotopic composition and clinical and histological advancement were established. The results suggest that assessment of the isotopic composition might serve as a valuable tool for determining tumour biology and behaviour. The aim of this paper was to characterise the isotopic composition of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) specimens of different areas of the oral cavity. Secondly, we assessed whether there was a correlation between clinical stages of OSCC and isotopic abundance. The IRMS procedure was performed on 124 samples derived from 31 patients with OSCC of 15 N and 13 C to assess the isotopic composition. From each individual, four samples from the tumour, two from the margins, and two samples of healthy oral mucous membranes were derived. The two samples from the tumour and two samples from the margin were additionally subjected to histopathological assessment. Then, statistical analysis was conducted. Tumour infiltration tissues of the lower lip were characterised by higher mean δ13C values compared to samples derived from cancers of the other oral cavity regions (−23.82 ± 1.21 vs. −22.67 ± 1.35); (p = 0.04). The mean percentage of nitrogen content in tumour tissues was statistically higher in patients with the most advanced cancers (11.89 ± 0.03%) versus the group of patients with II and III stage cancers (11.12 ± 0.02%); (p = 0.04). In patients at stage IV, the mean δ13C value in the cancer samples equalled −22.69 ± 1.42 and was lower than that in patients at less severe clinical stages (p = 0.04). Lower lip cancer tissues differed in the isotopic abundance of carbon in comparison with tissues derived from the group of combined samples from other locations. Values of δ13C observed in specimens derived from lower lip cancers were similar to those observed in healthy oral mucous membranes. Cancer tissues obtained from patients in the last stage of OSCC had a different isotopic composition in comparison with those obtained from earlier stages. Zeolites in powder form have the potential to agglomerate, lowering access to active sites. Furthermore, a suspension of fine zeolite powder in liquid media is difficult to separate. Such drawbacks could be improved by dispersing zeolite crystals on support materials. This work demonstrates the dispersion of zeolite NaY crystals on bamboo wood by mixing the wood with zeolite gel before hydrothermal treatment. The syntheses were performed with acid-refluxed and non–refluxed wood. The phase of zeolites, particle distribution and morphology, zeolite content in the wood, and zeolite–wood interaction were investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray tomography, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen sorption analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Higher zeolite content and better particle dispersion were obtained in the synthesis with the acid–refluxed wood. The composite of NaY on the acid-refluxed wood was demonstrated to be an effective adsorbent for Ni(II) ions in aqueous solutions, providing a higher adsorbed amount of Ni(II) per weight of NaY. The overapplication of nitrogen to wheat reduces profits and has adverse environmental consequences. Machine learning techniques are employed to identify the factors that hold the most potential in improving nitrogen recommendations. The database used in our analysis consisted of a formula fertilization project, the second soil census of China, and cultivated land fertility evaluation. The results showed that the wheat nitrogen yield response was mainly concentrated around 1300–2400 kg/ha in Henan Province, with the highest values observed in the southern and eastern regions and the lowest in the northern region. The soil nitrogen content, nitrogen fertilizer, wet nitrogen deposition, dry nitrogen deposition, and soil nitrogen supply capacity were mainly concentrated around 0.65–1.30 g/kg, 173–203 kg N/ha, 15–39 kg N/(ha yr), 7–49 kg N/(ha yr), and 105–150 kg N/ha, respectively. When comparing the spatial distribution of the soil nitrogen content, nitrogen fertilizer, and nitrogen deposition, we found that the soil nitrogen supply capacity emerged as the predominant factor controlling wheat grain production. Soil types, precipitation, and temperature demonstrated a notable positive correlation with the soil nitrogen supply capacity. Given this background, it would be unreasonable to rely solely on the soil nitrogen content as the standard for fertilizer management. Particularly in high-yield fields, our focus should be on preserving optimal soil fertility by placing greater emphasis on the soil nitrogen supply capacity rather than simply reducing fertilizer application during wheat growth. Four of the crosslinked sodium alginate and polyacrylic acid biopolymers based nanoscale metal natural polysaccharides, [M(AG-PAA)Cl(H2O)3], where M = Co(II), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Ni(II), AG = sodium alginate and PAA = polyacrylic acid, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Because of their numerous biological and pharmacological activities of polysaccharides, including antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, antitumor, antidiabetic, antiviral, antioxidant, hypoglycemic and anticoagulant activities, polysaccharides are one of the near-promising candidates in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. The complexity of the polymeric compounds has been verified by carbon and nitrogen analysis, magnetic and conductance measurements, FT-IR spectra, electronic spectral analysis and thermal analysis (DTA, TG). All the synthesized complexes were non-electrolytes with magnetic moments ranging from 1.74 to 5.94 BM. The polymeric complexes were found to be of octahedral geometry. The developed coordination polymeric was found to be crystalline using X-ray powder diffraction examinations, which is confirmed by the SEM analysis. As a result, the crystallite size of all polymeric nanocrystals was in the range of 14 - 69 nm. The test of four compounds exhibits a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungal Candida albicans. Using DPPH as a substrate, studies on radical scavenging tests are carried out. The findings demonstrated the antioxidant activities of each complex. In addition, results showed that the two chosen polymeric complexes had a good ability to kill cancer cells in a dose-dependent way. The copper(II) polymeric complex showed to its superior functionality as evidenced by microbial activity. After 72 h of interaction with the normal human breast epithelial cells (MCF10A), the synthesized polymeric compounds of Cu(II) and Co(II) showed exceptional cytocompatibility with the different applied doses. The present study aimed at utilizing technically hydrolyzed lignin (THL), industrial biomass residue, derived in high-temperature diluted sulfuric acid hydrolysis of softwood and hardwood chips to sugars. The THL was carbonized in a horizontal tube furnace at atmospheric pressure, in inert atmosphere and at three different temperatures (500, 600, and 700 °C). Biochar chemical composition was investigated along with its HHV, thermal stability (thermogravimetric analysis), and textural properties. Surface area and pore volume were measured with nitrogen physisorption analysis often named upon Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). Increasing the carbonization temperature reduced volatile organic compounds (40 ÷ 96 wt. %), increased fixed carbon (2.11 to 3.68 times the wt. % of fixed carbon in THL), ash, and C-content. Moreover, H and O were reduced, while N- and S-content were below the detection limit. This suggested biochar application as solid biofuel. The biochar Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra revealed that the functional groups were gradually lost, thus forming materials having merely polycyclic aromatic structures and high condensation rate. The biochar obtained at 600 and 700 °C proved having properties typical for microporous adsorbents, suitable for selective adsorption purposes. This work presented the production and incorporation of calcium-hydrolyzed nano-solutions at three concentrations (1, 2, and 3 wt.%) in alkali-activated gold mine tailings (MTs) from Arequipa, Perú. As the primary activator solution, a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution at 10 M was used. Calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles with a particle size of 10 nm were localized inside self-assembled molecular spherical systems (micelles) with diameters of less than 80 nm that were well-dispersed in aqueous solutions and acted as secondary activator, and also as additional calcium resource for alkali-activated materials (AAMs) based on low-calcium gold MTs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (HR-TEM/EDS) analyses were carried out to characterize the morphology, size, and structure of the calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses were then used to understand the chemical bonding interactions in the calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles and in the AAMs. Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) were performed to study the structural, chemical, and phase compositions of the AAMs; uniaxial compressive tests evaluated the compressive strength of the reaction AAMs; and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analyses measured porosity changes in the AAMs at the nanostructure level. The results indicated that the main cementing product generated was amorphous binder gel with low quantities of nanostructured C-S-H and C-A-S-H phases. The surplus production of this amorphous binder gel produced denser AAMs at the micro-level and nano-level (macroporous systems). In addition, each increase in the concentration of calcium-hydrolyzed nano-solution had a direct/proportional effect on the mechanical properties of the AAM samples. AAM with 3 wt.% calcium-hydrolyzed nano-solution had the highest compressive strength, with a value of 15.16 MPa, which represented an increase of 62% compared with the original system without nanoparticles that were aged under the same conditions at 70 °C for seven days. These results provided useful information about the positive effect of calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles on gold MTs and their conversion into sustainable building materials through alkali activation. FT-IR spectroscopy is the basic finger-print method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of nitrogen, boron, and hydrogen impurities in natural and synthetic diamonds. In quantitative measurements of impurity concentrations, external standard samples are required for the calibration procedure during the analysis. In this study, the double-phonon mid-IR absorption coefficient of optical phonons of the diamond host matrix, the robust internal mid-IR absorption standard, was accurately measured for tens of diverse diamond samples, thus enabling precise calibrated measurements of ultra-low detectable impurity concentrations. Nitrogen metabolism (NM) plays an essential role in response to abiotic stresses for plants. Enzyme activities have been extensively studied for nitrogen metabolism-associated pathways, but the knowledge of nitrogen metabolism-associated genes involved in stress response is still limited, especially for rice. In this study, we performed the genome-wide characterization of the genes putatively involved in nitrogen metabolism. A total of 1110 potential genes were obtained to be involved in nitrogen metabolism from eight species (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., Glycine max (L.) Merr., Brassica napus L., Triticum aestivum L., Sorghum bicolor L., Zea mays L., Oryza sativa L. and Amborella trichopoda Baill.), especially 104 genes in rice. The comparative phylogenetic analysis of the superfamily revealed the complicated divergence of different NM genes. The expression analysis among different tissues in rice indicates the NM genes showed diverse functions in the pathway of nitrogen absorption and assimilation. Distinct expression patterns of NM genes were observed in rice under drought stress, heat stress, and salt stress, indicating that the NM genes play a curial role in response to abiotic stress. Most NM genes showed a down-regulated pattern under heat stress, while complicated expression patterns were observed for different genes under salt stress and drought stress. The function of four representative NM genes (OsGS2, OsGLU, OsGDH2, and OsAMT1;1) was further validated by using qRT-PCR analysis to confirm their responses to these abiotic stresses. Based on the predicted transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs), we built a co-expression regulatory network containing transcription factors (TFs) and NM genes, of which the constructed ERF and Dof genes may act as the core genes to respond to abiotic stresses. Reduced imine cage (RCC3) was covalently bonded to the surface of silica spheres, and then the secondary amine group of the molecular cage was embedded in non-polar C10 for modification to prepare a novel RCC3-C10@silica HPLC stationary phase with multiple separation functions. Through infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and nitrogen adsorption–desorption characterization, it was confirmed that RCC3-C10 was successfully bonded to the surface of silica spheres. The resolution of RCC3-C10@silica in reversed-phase separation mode is as high as 2.95, 3.73, 3.27 and 4.09 for p-phenethyl alcohol, 1-phenyl-2-propanol, p-methylphenethyl alcohol and 1-phenyl-1-propanol, indicating that the stationary phase has excellent chiral resolution performance. In reversed-phase and hydrophilic separation modes, RCC3-C10@silica realized the separation and analysis of a total of 70 compounds in 8 classes of Tanaka mixtures, alkylbenzene rings, polyphenyl rings, phenols, anilines, sulfonamides, nucleosides and flavonoids, and the analysis of a variety of chiral and achiral complex mixtures have been completed at the same time. Compared with the traditional C18 commercial column, RCC3-C10@silica exhibits better chromatographic separation selectivity, aromatic selectivity and polar selectivity. The multifunctional separation mechanism exhibited by the stationary phase originates from various synergistic effects such as hydrophobic interaction, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding and steric interaction provided by RCC3 and C10 groups. Two novel fluorescent mesoporous silica-based hybrid materials were obtained through the covalent grafting of [4-hydrazinyl-7-nitrobenz-[2,1,3-d]-oxadiazole (NBDH) and N1-(7-nitrobenzo[c][1,2,5]-oxadiazol-4-yl) benzene-1,2-diamine (NBD-PD), respectively, inside the channels of mesoporous silica SBA-15. The presence of fluorescent organic compounds (nitrobenzofurazan derivatives) was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal analysis (TG), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The nitrogen physisorption analysis showed that the nitrobenzofurazan derivatives were distributed uniformly on the internal surface of SBA-15, the immobilization process having a negligible effect on the structure of the support. Their antioxidant activity was studied by measuring the ability to reduce free radicals DPPH (free radical scavenging activity), in order to formulate potential applications of the materials obtained. Cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized materials, SBA-NBDH and SBA-NBD-PD, was evaluated on human B16 melanoma cells. The morphology of these cells, internalization and localization of the investigated materials in melanoma and fibroblast cells were examined through fluorescence imaging. The viability of B16 (3D) spheroids after treatment with SBA-NBDH and SBA-NBD-PD was evaluated using MTS assay. The results showed that both materials induced a selective antiproliferative effect, reducing to various degrees the viability of melanoma cells. The observed effect was enhanced with increasing concentration. SBA-NBD-PD exhibited a higher antitumor effect compared to SBA-NBDH starting with a concentration of 125 µg/mL. In both cases, a significantly more pronounced antiproliferative effect on tumor cells compared to normal cells was observed. The viability of B16 spheroids dropped by 40% after treatment with SBA-NBDH and SBA-NBD-PD at 500 µg/mL concentration, indicating a clear cytotoxic effect of the tested compounds. Native corn starch and pretreated corn starch were treated with α-amylase, glucoamylase and mixtures of both to generate starches with high porosity with conserved granular structure. Porous starches were characterized; particle size distribution analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, scanning electron microscopy, water and oil adsorption capacity, differential scanning calorimeter, X-ray diffraction and damaged starch techniques were used. The α-amylase/glucoamylase mixture at the highest dose was the best treatment to generate porous starches with interesting adsorption capacity and granular structure conservation. Selected starches were impregnated with chia oil using a vacuum. Pretreated corn starch modified with the α-amylase/glucoamylase mixture showed no significant differences on impregnation capacity compared with native starch with a similar enzyme treatment. The highest oxidative stability was achieved with pretreated porous starch impregnated with 10 to 25% chia oil, compared with the bulk oil (5.37 to 4.72 and 2.58 h, respectively). Results have demonstrated that vacuum impregnation could be a potential technique for the incorporation of oil in porous structures based on starch and porous starches obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis are a promising material for the incorporation and protection of oils susceptible to oxidation. Objective: To establish a method for the simultaneous determination of seven alkaloids in Semen Nelumbinis and its products, the extraction technology and HPLC method were optimized by the single factor experiment. Methods: Firstly, the samples were extracted ultrasonically with 1% formic acid ethanol and purified by PXC SPE column. Then, the extracts and the purified liquid were taken after concentration with nitrogen for quantitative analysis of seven alkaloids by HPLC method. Next, the contents of alkaloids in five samples were determined. Results: The method was fully validated and the result showed that seven kinds of alkaloids had good linear relation in the corresponding range of mass concentration, r2 > 0.999, where the detection limit was 0.5–1.5 mg/kg, the quantification limit was 1.25–4.5 mg/kg, the recovery was 83.33–116.04%, and the RSD of detection method was 1.06–5.25% (n = 7). In five samples, the contents of Lotusine and Neferine were the highest, Berberine Hydrochloride was not detected. Conclusion: This method is simple, sensitive, accurate and reproducible, and it can realize the quantitative analysis and chemical separation of seven kinds of common alkaloids in Semen Nelumbinis and its products and provide a theoretical method for the simultaneous determination of alkaloids. Spent caustic wastewater produced in a soda plant has a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N). As excessive NH4+-N discharging into water bodies would cause eutrophication as well as destruction to the ecology balance, developing an efficient technology for NH4+-N removal from the spent caustic wastewater is imperative in the current society. In this study, an electrochemical process with graphene electrodes was designed for the NH4+-N removal in the spent caustic wastewater. The removal efficiency of the NH4+-N during the electrochemical process could reach 98.7% at 4 A in a short treatment time (within 120 s) with an acceptable energy consumption (6.1 kWh/m3-order). NO3− and NO2− were not detected during the electrochemical process. An insignificant amount of NH2Cl, NHCl2, and NCl3 produced in the treatment suggested that little of the NH4+-N reacted with chlorine, that is, chlorination played a negligible role in the NH4+-N removal. By electron equilibrium and nitrogen conversion analysis, we think that NH4+-N was primarily converted to NH2(ads) on the surface of a graphene electrode by one-electron transfer during the direct oxidation of the electrochemical process. Due to the high calcium ion (Ca2+) in the spent caustic wastewater, the electrode scale significantly increased to 1.4 g after treatment of 240 s at 4 A. By X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the composition of the electrode scale is portlandite Ca(OH)2. Although the electrode scale was obvious during the electrochemical treatment, it could be alleviated by alternating the electrode polarity. As a result, the life and efficiency of the graphene electrode for NH4+-N removal could remain stable for a long time. These results suggest that the electrochemical process with a graphene electrode may provide a competitive technology for NH4+-N removal in spent caustic wastewater treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) processing by-products (hemp cake and hemp seed hulls) were studied for their protein content, extraction of protein isolates (PIs), and their in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD). Crude protein contents of hemp cake and hemp seed hulls were 30.4% and 8.6%, respectively, calculated based on generalized N-to-P conversion factor (N × 5.37). Extraction efficiency of PIs from defatted biomass ranged from 56.0 to 67.7% with alkaline extraction (0.1 M NaOH) followed by isoelectric precipitation (1.0 M HCl). Nitrogen analysis suggested that the total protein contents of PIs extracted using three different alkaline conditions (0.5 M, 0.1 M, and pH 10.0 with NaOH) were >69.7%. The hemp by-product PIs contained all essential amino acids (EAAs) required for fish with leucine, valine, and phenylalanine belonging to the five dominant amino acids. Overall, glutamate was the dominant non-EAA followed by aspartate. Coomassie staining of an SDS-PAGE gel revealed strong presence of the storage protein edestin. High IVPD of >88% was observed for PIs extracted from hemp seeds and by-products when evaluated using a two-phase in vitro gastric/pancreatic protein digestibility assay. PIs extracted from by-products were further tested for their antioxidant activities. Sensor- and satellite-based determination of nitrogen uptake provides critical data in site-specific fertilization algorithms. Therefore, two basic noncontact measurement methods (sensor and satellite) were investigated in winter wheat, and their precision was evaluated in this study. Nitrogen uptake at four characteristic growth stages (BBCH 31, BBCH 39, BBCH 55, and BBCH 65) was determined using algorithms based on sensor and satellite data. As a reference, nitrogen uptake was determined using biomass samples in the laboratory (ground truth data). The precision of the tested methods was evaluated using statistical indicators (mean, median, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation) and correlation analyses between the nitrogen uptake of the ground truth data and that of the respective method. The results showed moderate to strong correlations with the nitrogen uptake of the ground truth data for both methods (R2 = 0.57–0.83). Both sensor and satellite data best represented nitrogen uptake in BBCH 39 and 55 (R2 = 0.63–0.83). In sum, there were only slight deviations in the absolute amount of nitrogen uptake (≤±15%). Clear deviations can be explained by external influences during measurement. Overall, the investigations showed that the nitrogen uptake could be appropriately determined as a data basis for site-specific fertilization systems using sensor and satellite data. Andrographolide, the principal secondary metabolite of Andrographis paniculata, displays a wide spectrum of medicinal activities. The content of andrographolide varies significantly in the species collected from different geographical regions. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the role of different abiotic factors and selecting suitable sites for the cultivation of A. paniculata with high andrographolide content using a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) approach. A total of 150 accessions of A. paniculata collected from different regions of Odisha and West Bengal in eastern India showed a variation in andrographolide content in the range of 0.28–5.45% on a dry weight basis. The MLP-ANN was trained using climatic factors and soil nutrients as the input layer and the andrographolide content as the output layer. The best topological ANN architecture, consisting of 14 input neurons, 12 hidden neurons, and 1 output neuron, could predict the andrographolide content with 90% accuracy. The developed ANN model showed good predictive performance with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9716 and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.18. The global sensitivity analysis revealed nitrogen followed by phosphorus and potassium as the predominant input variables influencing the andrographolide content. The andrographolide content could be increased from 3.38% to 4.90% by optimizing these sensitive factors. Featured Application: The proposed methodology is able to estimate the amount of nitrogen in plant leaves, using spectral information in the visible (Vis) and near infrared (NIR) ranges, obtaining a mean relative error below 1%. Thus, it will enable the development of portable devices to detect overuse of nitrogen fertilizers in the crops in a fast and non-destructive way. Although it has been tested in cucumber plants, the proposed method can be applied to other types of horticultural crops, repeating the training of the neural network when the new datasets of spectral data and measured nitrogen is available. Accurately determining the nutritional status of plants can prevent many diseases caused by fertilizer disorders. Leaf analysis is one of the most used methods for this purpose. However, in order to get a more accurate result, disorders must be identified before symptoms appear. Therefore, this study aims to identify leaves with excessive nitrogen using one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNN) on a dataset of spectral data using the Keras library. Seeds of cucumber were planted in several pots and, after growing the plants, they were divided into different classes of control (without excess nitrogen), N30% (excess application of nitrogen fertilizer by 30%), N60% (60% overdose), and N90% (90% overdose). Hyperspectral data of the samples in the 400–1100 nm range were captured using a hyperspectral camera. The actual amount of nitrogen for each leaf was measured using the Kjeldahl method. Since there were statistically significant differences between the classes, an individual prediction model was designed for each class based on the 1D-CNN algorithm. The main innovation of the present research resides in the application of separate prediction models for each class, and the design of the proposed 1D-CNN regression model. The results showed that the coefficient of determination and the mean squared error for the classes N30%, N60% and N90% were 0.962, 0.0005; 0.968, 0.0003; and 0.967, 0.0007, respectively. Fertilization is an essential aspect of tea plantation management that supports a sustainable tea production and drastically influences soil microbial communities. However, few research studies have focused on the differences of microbial communities and the variation in tea quality in response to different fertilization treatments. In this work, the soil fertility, tea quality, and soil microbial communities were investigated in two domestic tea plantations following the application of chemical and organic fertilizers. We determined the content of mineral elements in the soil, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and found that the supplementation of chemical fertilizer directly increased the content of mineral elements. However, the application of organic fertilizer significantly improved the accumulation of tea polyphenols and reduced the content of caffeine. Furthermore, amplicon sequencing results showed that the different ways of applying fertilizer have limited effect on the alpha diversity of the microbial community in the soil while the beta diversity was remarkably influenced. This work also suggests that the bacterial community structure and abundance were also relatively constant while the fungal community structure and abundance were dramatically influenced; for example, Chaetomiaceae at the family level, Hypocreaceae at the order level, Trichoderma at the genus level, and Fusarium oxysporum at the species level were predominantly enriched in the tea plantation applying organic fertilizer. Moreover, the bacterial and fungal biomarkers were also analyzed and it was found that Proteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria (bacteria) and Tremellomycetes (fungi) were potentially characterized as biomarkers in the plantation under organic fertilization. These results provide a valuable basis for the application of organic fertilizer to improve the soil of tea plantations in the future.

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is a plant native to South America that has gathered much interest in recent decades thanks to diterpene glycosides, called steviosides, which it produces. These compounds are characterised by their sweetness, which is 250-300 times higher than saccharose, and they contain almost no caloric value. Stevia is currently also grown outside the South American continent, in various countries characterised by warm weather. This research aimed to determine whether it is viable to grow Stevia rebaudiana plants in Poland, a country characterised by a cooler climate than the native regions for stevia plants. Additionally, the impact of adding various dosages and forms of nitrogen fertiliser was analysed. It was determined that Stevia rebaudiana grown in Poland is characterised by a rather low concentration of steviosides, although proper nitrogen fertilisation can improve various characteristics of the grown plants. The addition of 100 kg or 150 kg of nitrogen per hectare of the field in the form of urea or ammonium nitrate increased the yield of the stevia plants. The stevioside content can be increased by applying fertilisation using 100 kg or 150 kg of nitrogen per hectare in the form of ammonium sulfate. The total yield of the stevia plants grown in Poland was lower than the yield typically recorded in warmer countries, and the low concentration of steviosides in the plant suggests that more research about growing Stevia rebaudiana in Poland would be needed to develop profitable methods of stevia cultivation.

The limited availability of phosphate, nitrogen and silicon in the growth media affects the growth, cellular processes, and metabolism of diatoms. Silicon deficiency primarily affects diatom morphology, while phosphate deficiency reduces the production of nucleic acids and phospholipids. Differences in pigment and protein composition are mainly due to nitrogen deficiency. In this study, Chaetoceros socialis and Chaetoceros costatus were cultured under phosphate, nitrogen, and silicon deprivation conditions. The diatom biomass was collected during the stationary growth phase and extracted with 70% ethanol under ultrasonication. The chemical profiles of the extracts were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry with electrospray ionisation (UHPLC-ESI-HRMS), while the antioxidant capacity was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Pigments, fatty acids, sterols, and derivatives were detected in both species. The total phenolic content in the extracts ranged from 46.25 ± 1.08 to 89.38 ± 6.21 mg of gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/L and from 29.58 ± 1.08 to 54.17 ± 1.18 mg GAE/L. for C. costatus and C. socialis , respectively. Antioxidant activity was higher in C. costatus extracts, especially those obtained from nitrogen-deprived media. The results of this study contribute to the existing knowledge and the ongoing efforts to overcome application and commercialization barriers of microalgae for wide-ranging potential in different industries.

We describe, for the first time, a successful strategy for synthesizing chiral periodic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (PMO NPs). The chiral PMO nanoparticles were synthesized in a sol–gel process under mild conditions; their preparation was mediated by hydrolysis and condensation of chiral-bridged organo-alkoxysilane precursor compounds, (OR')3Si-R-Si(OR')3, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant. The resulting nanoparticles were composed merely from a chiral- bridged organo-alkoxysilane monomer. These systems were prepared by applying different surfactants and ligands that finally afforded monodispersed chiral PMO NPs consisting of 100% bridged-organosilane precursor. In addition, the major advancement that was achieved here was, for the first time, success in preparing magnetic chiral PMO NPs. These nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-polymerization of 1,1′-((1R,2R)-1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-diyl)bis(3-(3-(triethoxysilyl) propyl) urea) chiral monomer by an oil in water (o/w) emulsion process, to afford magnetic chiral PMO NPs with magnetite NPs in their cores. The obtained materials were characterized with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), solid-state NMR analysis, circular dichroism (CD) analysis, and nitrogen sorption analysis (N2-BET). Soil fertility is vital for the growth of tea plants. The physicochemical properties of soil play a key role in the evaluation of soil fertility. Thus, realizing the rapid and accurate detection of soil physicochemical properties is of great significance for promoting the development of precision agriculture in tea plantations. In recent years, spectral data have become an important tool for the non-destructive testing of soil physicochemical properties. In this study, a support vector regression (SVR) model was constructed to model the hydrolyzed nitrogen, available potassium, and effective phosphorus in tea plantation soils of different grain sizes. Then, the successful projections algorithm (SPA) and least-angle regression (LAR) and bootstrapping soft shrinkage (BOSS) variable importance screening methods were used to optimize the variables in the soil physicochemical properties. The findings demonstrated that soil particle sizes of 0.25-0.5 mm produced the best predictions for all three physicochemical properties. After further using the dimensionality reduction approach, the LAR algorithm (R 2 C = 0.979, R 2 P = 0.976, RPD = 6.613) performed optimally in the prediction model for hydrolytic nitrogen at a soil particle size of 0.25~0.5. The models using data dimensionality reduction and those that used the BOSS method to estimate available potassium (R 2 C = 0.977, R 2 P = 0.981, RPD = 7.222) and effective phosphorus (R 2 C = 0.969, R 2 P = 0.964, RPD = 5.163) had the best accuracy. In order to offer a reference for the accurate detection of soil physicochemical properties in tea plantations, this study investigated the modeling effect of each physicochemical property under various soil particle sizes and integrated the regression model with various downscaling strategies.

Biochar is important for soil improvement, fertilizer innovation, and greenhouse gas reduction. In this paper, Mg-modified biochar was prepared from rice and corn straw and mixed with soil at a 1% ( w / w ) addition in an indoor soil simulation experiment to study the effect of Mg-modified biochar on the chemical properties of acidic soil. The results showed that the addition of Mg-modified biochar reduced soil acidity and improved soil fertility. Compared with the control group, the Mg-modified biochar treatment significantly increased the concentrations of available potassium, available phosphorus, total phosphorus, organic carbon and exchangeable calcium and magnesium in the soil, and effectively increased the concentration of total nitrogen. Rice straw Mg-modified biochar treatment was more effective in increasing the soil-available potassium, available phosphorus, total phosphorus and exchangeable magnesium concentration, while corn straw Mg-modified biochar was more effective in increasing the soil organic carbon and exchangeable calcium concentration. In addition, the high pyrolysis temperature of Mg-modified biochar was more effective in promoting the soil-available potassium, available phosphorus and total nitrogen concentration, while the low pyrolysis temperature of Mg-modified biochar was more effective in promoting soil alkaline nitrogen, exchangeable calcium and magnesium.

In this study, we evaluated the cold drawing workability of two kinds of modified 9Cr-2W steel containing different contents of boron and nitrogen depending on the temperature and time of normalizing and tempering treatments. Using ring compression tests at room temperature, the effect of intermediate heat treatment condition on workability was investigated. It was found that the prior austenite grain size can be changed by the austenite transformation and that the grain size increases with increasing temperature during normalizing heat treatment. Alloy B and Alloy N showed different patterns after normalizing heat treatment. Alloy N had higher stress than Alloy B, and the reduction in alloy N increased while the reduction in alloy B decreased. Alloy B showed a larger number of initially formed cracks and a larger average crack length than Alloy N. Crack length and number increased proportionally in Alloy B as the stress increased. The prediction of soil properties at different depths is an important research topic for promoting the conservation of black soils and the development of precision agriculture. Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR, 2500-25000 nm) has shown great potential in predicting soil properties. This study aimed to explore the ability of MIR to predict soil organic matter (OM) and total nitrogen (TN) at five different depths with the calibration from the whole depth (0-100 cm) or the shallow layers (0-40 cm) and compare its performance with visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (vis-NIR, 350-2500 nm). A total of 90 soil samples containing 450 subsamples (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-40 cm, 40-70 cm, and 70-100 cm depths) and their corresponding MIR and vis-NIR spectra were collected from a field of black soil in Northeast China. Multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) were used to build prediction models. The results showed that prediction models based on MIR (OM: RMSE p = 1.07-3.82 g/kg, RPD = 1.10-5.80; TN: RMSE p = 0.11-0.15 g/kg, RPD = 1.70-4.39) outperformed those based on vis-NIR (OM: RMSE p = 1.75-8.95 g/kg, RPD = 0.50-3.61; TN: RMSE p = 0.12-0.27 g/kg; RPD = 1.00-3.11) because of the higher number of characteristic bands. Prediction models based on the whole depth calibration (OM: RMSE p = 1.09-2.97 g/kg, RPD = 2.13-5.80; TN: RMSE p = 0.08-0.19 g/kg, RPD = 1.86-4.39) outperformed those based on the shallow layers (OM: RMSE p = 1.07-8.95 g/kg, RPD = 0.50-3.93; TN: RMSE p = 0.11-0.27 g/kg, RPD = 1.00-2.24) because the soil sample data of the whole depth had a larger and more representative sample size and a wider distribution. However, prediction models based on the whole depth calibration might provide lower accuracy in some shallow layers. Accordingly, it is suggested that the methods pertaining to soil property prediction based on the spectral library should be considered in future studies for an optimal approach to predicting soil properties at specific depths. This study verified the superiority of MIR for soil property prediction at specific depths and confirmed the advantage of modeling with the whole depth calibration, pointing out a possible optimal approach and providing a reference for predicting soil properties at specific depths.

Precision agriculture is crucial for ensuring food security in a growing global population. Nutrients, their presence, concentration, and effectiveness, are key components in data-driven agriculture. Assessing macro and micro-nutrients, as well as factors such as water and pH, helps determine soil fertility, which is vital for supporting healthy plant growth and high crop yields. Insufficient soil nutrient assessment during continuous cropping can threaten long-term agricultural viability. Soil nutrients need to be measured and replenished after each harvest for optimal yield. However, existing soil testing procedures are expensive and time-consuming. The proposed research aims to assess soil nutrient levels, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, to provide critical information and guidance on restoring optimal soil fertility. In this research, a novel chip-level colorimeter is fabricated to detect the N and P elements of soil onto a handheld colorimeter or spectrophotometer. Chemical reaction with soil solution generates color in the presence of nutrients, which are then quantitatively measured using sensors. The test samples are collected from various farmlands, and the results are validated with laboratory analysis of samples using spectrophotometers used in laboratories. ANOVA test has been performed in which F value > 1 in our study indicates statistically significant differences between the group means. The alternate hypothesis, which proposes the presence of significant differences between the groups, is supported by the data. The device created in this paper has crucial potential in terms of environmental and biological applications.

To quantitatively evaluate the effects on water quality improvement caused by reducing external loadings entering Lake Erhai through inflow rivers, a one-dimensional hydrodynamic and ecological model (DYRESM-CAEDYM) was set up to simulate the water quality and water level variations. The calibrated and validated model was used to conduct six scenarios for evaluating the water quality responses to different amounts of external loading reduction at Lake Erhai. The results show (1) the total nitrogen (TN) concentration of Lake Erhai will be higher than 0.5 mg/L without any watershed pollution control during April-November 2025, which cannot meet Grade II standard of the China Surface Water Environmental Quality Standards (GB3838-2002). (2) External loading reductions can significantly reduce the concentrations of nutrients and Chla at Lake Erhai. The effects of water quality improvement will be proportional to the reduction rate of external loading reductions. (3) Internal release might be an important source of pollution It needs to be seriously considered as well as external loading for mitigating the eutrophication at Lake Erhai in the future.

Floodplains have important ecological and hydrological functions in terrestrial ecosystems, experience severe soil erosion, and are vulnerable to losing soil fertility. Tamarix chinensis Lour. plantation is the main vegetation restoration measure for maintaining soil quality in floodplains. Soil microorganisms are essential for driving biogeochemical cycling processes. However, the effects of sampling location and shrub patch size on soil microbial community composition remain unclear. In this study, we characterized changes in microbial structure, as well as the factors driving them, in inside- and outside-canopy soils of three patch sizes (small, medium, large) of T. chinensis plants in the middle Yellow River floodplain. Compared with the outside-canopy soils, inside-canopy had higher microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), including fungi, bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria (GP), Gram-negative bacteria (GN), and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The ratio of fungi to bacteria and GP to GN gradually decreased as shrub patch size increased. Differences between inside-canopy and outside-canopy soils in soil nutrients (organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus) and soil salt content increased by 59.73%, 40.75%, 34.41%, and 110.08% from small to large shrub patch size. Changes in microbial community composition were mainly driven by variation in soil organic matter, which accounted for 61.90% of the variation in inside-canopy soils. Resource islands could alter microbial community structure, and this effect was stronger when shrub patch size was large. The results indicated that T. chinensis plantations enhanced the soil nutrient contents (organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus) and elevated soil microbial biomass and changed microbial community composition; T. chinensis plantations might thus provide a suitable approach for restoring degraded floodplain ecosystems.

Biochar and nitrogen fertilizers are known to increase soil carbon storage and reduce soil nitrogen loss as amendments, suggesting a promising strategy for highly effectively increasing soil productivity. However, few studies have explored the mechanisms of their effects on crop yield in terms of active carbon fraction and enzyme activity, which ultimately limits the potential for the application of biochar in combination with nitrogen fertilizers. To evaluate the effect of biochar and nitrogen fertilizer on the improvement of black soils in northeast China, a field experiment was conducted in the black soil to compare and analyze the application methods on total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), enzyme activities, and maize yields. Biochar rates: CK, C1, C2, and C3 (0, 9.8, 19.6, and 29.4 Mg·ha -1 ); N fertilizer rates: N1/2 and N (30 and 60 kg·ha -1 ). Results indicated that biochar and N fertilizer amendments significantly ameliorated soil fertility, such as TOC and TN, compared to the unamended soil. The TOC levels in the C3 treatment increased by 35.18% and the TN levels by 23.95%. The improvement in TN is more significant when biochar is blended with N fertilizer. Biochar blended with N fertilizer increased maize cellulase, urease, and invertase activities by an average of 53.12%, 58.13%, and 16.54%, respectively. Redundancy analysis showed that TOC, TN, and MBN contributed 42%, 16.2%, and 22.2%, respectively, to the maize yield indicator. Principal component analysis showed that reduced N fertilizer was more effective in improving yields, with a maximum yield increase of 50.74%. Biochar blended with N fertilizer is an effective strategy to improve the fertility and productivity of black soils in northeast China, while nitrogen fertilizer reduction is feasible and necessary for maintaining grain yield.

Based on the monthly monitoring of Bao'an Lake in Hubei Province from 2018 to 2020, the eutrophication level of Bao'an Lake in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is investigated using the comprehensive trophic level index (TLI), chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficient, and the phytoplankton water quality biological method. The influencing factors are then identified. The results demonstrate that the overall water quality of Bao'an Lake remained at levels III-V during 2018-2020. Due to different eutrophication assessment methods, the results are different, but all show that Bao'an Lake is in a eutrophication state as a whole. The eutrophication level of Bao'an Lake is observed to vary with time, exhibiting an increasing then decreasing trend between 2018-2020, while levels are high in summer and autumn, and low in winter and spring. Moreover, the eutrophication level of Bao'an Lake presents an obviously varying spatial distribution. Potamogeton crispus is the dominant species of the Bao'an Lake, the water quality is good in spring when Potamogeton crispus vigorously grows, but poor in summer and autumn. The permanganate index (COD Mn ) and total phosphorous (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) contents are identified as the main influencing factors of the eutrophication level of Bao'an Lake, with a significant relationship observed between Chl-a and TP ( p < 0.01). The above results provide a solid theoretical basis for the ecological restoration of Bao'an Lake.

In order to study the vertical distribution characteristics of phytoplankton in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the water source of the Middle Route Project of the South-North Water Diversion, seven sampling sites were set up in the Reservoir for quarterly sampling from 2017 to 2019, and water environment surveys were conducted simultaneously. The results showed that 157 species (including varieties) were identified, belonging to 9 phyla and 88 genera. In terms of species richness, Chlorophyta had the largest number of species, accounting for 39.49% of the total species. The Bacillariophyta and Cyanobacteria accounted for 28.03% and 13.38% of the total species, respectively. From the whole Danjiangkou Reservoir, the total phytoplankton abundance varied from 0.09 × 10 2 to 20.01 × 10 6 cells/L. In the vertical distribution, phytoplankton were mainly observed in the surface-thermospheric layer (I-II layer) and the bottom layer, while the Shannon-Wiener index showed a trend of gradually decreasing from the I-V layer. The Surfer model analysis showed that there was no significant stratification in the Q site's water temperature (WT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the water diversion area during the dynamic water diversion process. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that DO, WT, pH, electrical conductivity (Cond), chemical oxygen demand (COD Mn ), total phosphorus (TP), ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), and total nitrogen (TN) had significant effects on the vertical distribution of phytoplankton ( p < 0.05). A partial Mantel analysis showed that the vertical distribution of the phytoplankton community was related to WT, and the phytoplankton community structure at the other sites, except for Heijizui (H) and Langhekou (L), was affected by DO. This study has positive significance for exploring the vertical distribution characteristics of a phytoplankton community in a deep-water dynamic water diversion reservoir.

Water-scarce cities have fewer surface water (SW) resources available for ecological use, causing landscape water to deteriorate due to water shortage and fail to perform their intended landscape functions. As a result, many cities use reclaimed water (RW) to replenish them. However, this could cause concern among the people, as RW usually has higher nutrient concentrations, which may stimulate algae growth and deteriorate the aesthetic senses of the receiving water bodies. In order to assess the feasibility of using RW for this purpose, this study used Xingqing Lake in Northwest China as insight into the effect of RW replenishment on the visual landscape quality of urban landscape water. Water transparency (measured by SD) is used as an intuitive indicator to reflect the comprehensive influence of suspended solids and algae growth on the water's aesthetic quality. Scenario analyses were carried out after calibrating and validating one-year data in MIKE 3 software with both SD and algae growth calculations, and the results showed that the low concentration of suspended matter in RW could compensate for the decrease in SD due to algal blooms caused by high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus, and the effect on SD is especially pronounced under conditions that are not conducive to algal growth, such as good flow conditions and low temperature. In addition, to meet a SD ≥ 70 mm, the total water inflow required can be significantly reduced with the optimal application of RW. It is also indicated that partial or complete utilization of RW to replace SW for replenishing the landscape water could be feasible from the viewpoint of landscape quality, at least for the landscape water investigated in this study. This can provide a method for the improvement to urban water management practices by using RW for replenishment in water-scarce cities.

Excessive N fertilizer application has aggravated soil acidification and loss of N. Although oyster shell powder (OSP) can improve acidic soil, few studies have investigated its ability to retain soil N. Here, the physicochemical properties of latosol after adding OSP and calcined OSP (COSP) and the dynamic leaching patterns of ammonium N (NH 4 + -N), nitrate N (NO 3 - -N), and Ca in seepage, were examined through indoor culture and intermittent soil column simulation experiments. Various types of N fertilizer were optimized through the application of 200 mg/kg of N, urea (N 200 mg/kg) was the control treatment (CK), and OSP and COSPs prepared at four calcination temperatures-500, 600, 700, and 800 °C-were added to the latosol for cultivation and leaching experiments. Under various N application conditions, the total leached N from the soil followed ammonium nitrate > ammonium chloride > urea. The OSP and COSPs had a urea adsorption rate of 81.09-91.29%, and the maximum reduction in cumulative soil inorganic N leached was 18.17%. The ability of COSPs to inhibit and control N leaching improved with increasing calcination temperature. Applying OSP and COSPs increased soil pH, soil organic matter, total N, NO 3 - -N, exchangeable Ca content, and cation exchange capacity. Although all soil enzyme activities related to N transformation decreased, the soil NH 4 + -N content remained unchanged. The strong adsorption capacities for NH 4 + -N by OSP and COSPs reduced the inorganic N leaching, mitigating the risk of groundwater contamination.

The aim of the analysis was to compare the physicochemical variables of the quality of shallow groundwater in the peatlands of Eastern Poland in the context of the occurrence of selected herb species with similar habitat requirements: bogbean ( Menyanthes trifoliata ), small cranberry ( Oxycoccus palustris ), and purple marshlocks ( Comarum palustre ). The analysis of the quality variables of the shallow groundwater included the following physicochemical variables: reaction (pH), electrolytic conductivity (EC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (N tot. ), ammonium nitrogen (N-NH 4 ), nitrite nitrogen (N-NO 2 ), nitrate nitrogen (N-NO 3 ), total phosphorus (P tot. ), phosphates (P-PO 4 ), sulphates (SO 2 ), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg). Internal metabolism was shown to influence the hydro-chemical status of peatland water, free of substantial human impact. The variables tested were within the range of the habitat preferences of the herb species and indicated that they have a wide ecological tolerance. However, their identical habitat preferences were not reflected in identical values for the physicochemical variables of the water essential for building populations of these species. The occurrence of these plant species was also shown to be determined by the hydro-chemical characteristics of the habitat, but the characteristics of their occurrence did not indicate the hydro-chemical aspect of the habitat.

Rice-duck and rice-crayfish co-culture patterns can increase soil productivity and sustainability and reduce the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, thereby reducing the resulting negative environmental impacts. However, most studies have focused on the rice-duck and rice-crayfish binary patterns and have ignored integrated systems (three or more), which may have unexpected synergistic effects. To test these effects, a paddy field experiment was carried out in the Chaohu Lake Basin, Hefei city, Southeast China. Four groups, including a rice-duck-crayfish ecological co-culture system (RDC), idle field (CK), single-season rice planting system (SSR), and double-season rice planting system (DSR), were established in this study. The results showed that the RDC improved the soil physical properties, fertility, humus content, and enzyme activity. In the RDC system, the soil total nitrogen content ranged from 8.54% to 28.37% higher than other systems in the 0-10 cm soil layer. Similar increases were found for soil total phosphorus (8.22-30.53%), available nitrogen (6.93-22.72%), organic matter (18.24-41.54%), urease activity (16.67-71.51%), and acid phosphatase activity (23.41-66.20%). Relative to the SSR treatment, the RDC treatment reduced the total losses of nitrogen and phosphorus runoff by 24.30% and 10.29%, respectively. The RDC also did not cause any harm to the soil in terms of heavy metal pollution. Furthermore, the RDC improved the yield and quality of rice, farmer incomes, and eco-environmental profits. In general, the RDC can serve as a valuable method for the management of agricultural nonpoint-source pollution in the Chaohu Lake area and the revitalization of the countryside.

In order to explore the treatment effect of a bio-ecological combined process on pollution reduction and carbon abatement of rural domestic wastewater under seasonal changes, the rural area of Lingui District, Guilin City, Guangxi Province, China was selected to construct a combined process of regulating a pond, biological filter, subsurface flow constructed wetland, and ecological purification pond. The influent water, effluent water, and the characteristics of pollutant treatment in each unit were investigated. The results showed that the average removal rates of COD, TN, and NH 3 -N in summer were 87.57, 72.18, and 80.98%, respectively, while they were 77.46, 57.52, and 64.48% in winter. There were significant seasonal differences in wastewater treatment results in Guilin. Meanwhile, in view of the low carbon:nitrogen ratio in the influent and the poor decontamination effect, the method of adding additional carbon sources such as sludge fermentation and rice straw is proposed to strengthen resource utilization and achieve carbon reduction and emission reduction. The treatment effect of ecological units, especially constructed wetland units, had a high contribution rate of TN treatment, but it was greatly impacted by seasons. The analysis of the relative abundance of the microbial community at the phylum level in constructed wetlands revealed that Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetota, and Actinobacteria were the dominant phyla. The relative abundance of microbial communities of Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria decreased to a large extent from summer to winter, while Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Planctomycetota increased to varying degrees. These dominant bacteria played an important role in the degradation of pollutants such as COD, NH 3 -N, and TN in wetland systems.

The generation of ozone and nitrogen oxides by laser-induced dielectric breakdown (LIDB) in mixtures of air with noble gases Ar, He, Kr, and Xe is investigated using OES and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and absorption spectrophotometry. It is shown that the formation of NO and NO 2 noticeably depends on the type of inert gas; the more complex electronic configuration and the lower ionization potential of the inert gas led to increased production of NO and NO 2 . The formation of ozone occurs mainly due to the photolytic reaction outside the gas discharge zone. Equilibrium thermodynamic analysis showed that the formation of NO in mixtures of air with inert gases does not depend on the choice of an inert gas, while the equilibrium concentration of the NO+ ion decreases with increasing complexity of the electronic configuration of an inert gas.

Grassland use patterns, water and nutrients are the main determinants of ecosystem structure and function in semiarid grasslands. However, few studies have reported how the interactive effects of rainfall changes and nitrogen deposition influence the recovery of semiarid grasslands degraded by grazing. In this study, a simulated grazing, increasing and decreasing rainfall, nitrogen deposition test platform was constructed, and the regulation mechanism of vegetation characteristics and productivity were studied. We found that grazing decreased plant community height (CWM height ) and litter and increased plant density. Increasing rainfall by 60% from May to August (+60%) increased CWM height ; decreasing rainfall by 60% from May to August (-60%) and by 100% from May to June (-60 d) decreased CWM height and coverage; -60 d, +60% and increasing rainfall by 100% from May to June (+60 d) increased plant density; -60% increased the Simpson dominance index (D index) but decreased the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H index); -60 d decreased the aboveground biomass (ABG), and -60% increased the underground biomass (BGB) in the 10-60 cm layer. Nitrogen addition decreased species richness and the D index and increased the H index and AGB. Rainfall and soil nitrogen directly affect AGB; grazing and rainfall can also indirectly affect AGB by inducing changes in CWM height ; grazing indirectly affects BGB by affecting plant density and soil nitrogen. The results of this study showed that in the semiarid grassland of Inner Mongolia, grazing in the nongrowing season and grazing prohibition in the growing season can promote grassland recovery, continuous drought in the early growing season will have dramatic impacts on productivity, nitrogen addition has a certain impact on the species composition of vegetation, and the impact on productivity will not appear in the short term.

Biochar addition has been recommended as a potential strategy for mitigating climate change. However, the number of studies simultaneously investigating the effects of biochar addition on CO 2 , N 2 O and CH 4 emissions and sequentially global warming potential (GWP) is limited, especially concerning its effect on native soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization. An incubation experiment was conducted to investigate soil physicochemical properties, CO 2 , N 2 O and CH 4 emissions and GWP in the treatments with 0% (CK), 1% (BC1) and 4% (BC4) cornstalk biochar additions, and clarify the priming effect of biochar on native SOC mineralization by the 13 C tracer technique. Generally, biochar addition increased soil pH, cation exchange capacity, SOC and total nitrogen, but decreased NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N. Compared with CK, BC1 and BC4 significantly reduced CO 2 emissions by 20.7% and 28.0%, and reduced N 2 O emissions by 25.6% and 95.4%, respectively. However, BC1 significantly reduced CH 4 emission by 43.6%, and BC4 increased CH 4 emission by 19.3%. BC1 and BC4 significantly reduced the GWP by 20.8% and 29.3%, but there was no significant difference between them. Biochar addition had a negative priming effect on native SOC mineralization, which was the reason for the CO 2 emission reduction. The negative priming effect of biochar was attributed to the physical protection of native SOC by promoting microaggregate formation and preferentially using soluble organic carbon in biochar. The N 2 O emission decrease was rooted in the reduction of nitrification and denitrification substrates by promoting the microbial assimilation of inorganic nitrogen. The inconsistency of CH 4 emissions was attributed to the different relative contributions of CH 4 production and oxidation under different biochar addition ratios. Our study suggests that 1% should be a more reasonable biochar addition ratio for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in sandy loam, and emphasizes that it is necessary to furtherly investigate nitrogen primary transformation rates and the relative contributions of CH 4 production and oxidation by the 15 N and 13 C technique, which is helpful for comprehensively understanding the effect mechanisms of biochar addition on greenhouse gas emissions.
