The pandemic coronavirus COVID-19 spread around the world with deaths exceeding that of SARS. COVID-19 is believed to have been transmitted from animals, especially from bats, and the virus is transmitted from person to person over time. This paper will help countries to make decisions that encourage access to corrected values and get some indication as to whether there are other factors that affect the spread of COVID-19, via methods such as by increasing the daily test rate. This paper presents an intelligent model for analyzing data collected from the countries affected by the COVID-19 virus. It considers the total number of tests that each country has undergone, the number of international tourist arrivals in each country, the percentage of employment, the life expectancy at birth, the median age, the population density, the number of people aged 65 years or older in millions, and the sex ratio. The proposed model is based on machine learning approaches using k-Means as a clustering approach, Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a classifier, and wrapper as a feature extraction approach. It consists of three phases of pre-processing the data collected, the discovery of outlier cases, the selection of the most effective features for each of the total infected, deaths, critical and recovery cases, and the construction of prediction models. Experimental results show that the extracted features of the wrapper technique have shown that it is more capable of fitting and predicting data than the Correlation-Based Feature Selection, Correlation Attribute Evaluation, Information Gain, and Relief Attribute Evaluation techniques. This paper explores the feasibility of using low-resolution infrared (LRIR) image streams for human activity recognition (HAR) with potential application in e-healthcare. Two datasets based on synchronized multichannel LRIR sensors systems are considered for a comprehensive study about optimal data acquisition. A novel noise reduction technique is proposed for alleviating the effects of horizontal and vertical periodic noise in the 2D spatiotemporal activity profiles created by vectorizing and concatenating the LRIR frames. Two main analysis strategies are explored for HAR, including (1) manual feature extraction using texture-based and orthogonal-transformation-based techniques, followed by classification using support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), and logistic regression (LR), and (2) deep neural network (DNN) strategy based on a convolutional long short-term memory (LSTM). The proposed periodic noise reduction technique showcases an increase of up to 14.15% using different models. In addition, for the first time, the optimum number of sensors, sensor layout, and distance to subjects are studied, indicating the optimum results based on a single side sensor at a close distance. Reasonable accuracies are achieved in the case of sensor displacement and robustness in detection of multiple subjects. The total number of discovered plant species is increasing yearly worldwide. Plant species differ from one region to another. Some of these discovered plant species are beneficial while others might be poisonous. Computer vision techniques can be an effective way to classify plant species and predict their poisonous status. However, the lack of comprehensive datasets that include not only plant images but also plant species' scientific names, description, poisonous status, and local name make the issue of poisonous plants species prediction a very challenging issue. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model relying on transformers models in conjunction with support vector machine for plant species classification and poisonous status prediction. First, six different Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures are used to determine which produces the best results. Second, the features are extracted using six different CNNs and then optimized and employed to Support Vector Machine (SVM) for testing. To prove the feasibility and benefits of our proposed approach, we used a real case study namely, plant species discovered in the Arabian Peninsula. We have gathered a dataset that contains 2500 images of 50 different Arabic plant species and includes plants images, plant species scientific name, description, local name, and poisonous status. This study on the types of Arabic plants species will help in the reduction of the number of poisonous plants victims and their negative impact on the individual and society. The results of our experiments for the CNN approach in conjunction SVM are favorable where the classifier scored 0.92, 0.94, and 0.95 in accuracy, precision, and F1-Score respectively. The majority of the senior population lives alone at home. Falls can cause serious injuries, such as fractures or head injuries. These injuries can be an obstacle for a person to move around and normally practice his daily activities. Some of these injuries can lead to a risk of death if not handled urgently. In this paper, we propose a fall detection system for elderly people based on their postures. The postures are recognized from the human silhouette which is an advantage to preserve the privacy of the elderly. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated on two well-known datasets for human posture classification and three public datasets for fall detection, using a Support-Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. Automatic building extraction from satellite images, an open research topic in remote sensing, continues to represent a challenge and has received substantial attention for decades. This paper presents an object-based and machine learning-based approach for automatic house detection from RGB high-resolution images. The images are first segmented by an algorithm combing a thresholding watershed transformation and hierarchical merging, and then shadows and vegetation are eliminated from the initial segmented regions to generate building candidates. Subsequently, the candidate regions are subjected to feature extraction to generate training data. In order to capture the characteristics of house regions well, we propose two kinds of new features, namely edge regularity indices (ERI) and shadow line indices (SLI). Finally, three classifiers, namely AdaBoost, random forests, and Support Vector Machine (SVM), are employed to identify houses from test images and quality assessments are conducted. The experiments show that our method is effective and applicable for house identification. The proposed ERI and SLI features can improve the precision and recall by 5.6% and 11.2%, respectively. Breathing is one of the body's most basic functions and abnormal breathing can indicate underlying cardiopulmonary problems. Monitoring respiratory abnormalities can help with early detection and reduce the risk of cardiopulmonary diseases. In this study, a 77 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) millimetre-wave (mmWave) radar was used to detect different types of respiratory signals from the human body in a non-contact manner for respiratory monitoring (RM). To solve the problem of noise interference in the daily environment on the recognition of different breathing patterns, the system utilised breathing signals captured by the millimetre-wave radar. Firstly, we filtered out most of the static noise using a signal superposition method and designed an elliptical filter to obtain a more accurate image of the breathing waveforms between 0.1 Hz and 0.5 Hz. Secondly, combined with the histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) feature extraction algorithm, K-nearest neighbours (KNN), convolutional neural network (CNN), and HOG support vector machine (G-SVM) were used to classify four breathing modes, namely, normal breathing, slow and deep breathing, quick breathing, and meningitic breathing. The phonocardiogram (PCG) can be used as an affordable way to monitor heart conditions. This study proposes the training and testing of several classifiers based on SVMs (support vector machines), k-NN (k-Nearest Neighbor), and NNs (neural networks) to perform binary ("Normal"/"Pathologic") and multiclass ("Normal", "CAD" (coronary artery disease), "MVP" (mitral valve prolapse), and "Benign" (benign murmurs)) classification of PCG signals, without heart sound segmentation algorithms. Two datasets of 482 and 826 PCG signals from the Physionet/CinC 2016 dataset are used to train the binary and multiclass classifiers, respectively. Each PCG signal is pre-processed, with spike removal, denoising, filtering, and normalization; afterward, it is divided into 5 s frames with a 1 s shift. Subsequently, a feature set is extracted from each frame to train and test the binary and multiclass classifiers. Concerning the binary classification, the trained classifiers yielded accuracies ranging from 92.4 to 98.7% on the test set, with memory occupations from 92.7 kB to 11.1 MB. Regarding the multiclass classification, the trained classifiers achieved accuracies spanning from 95.3 to 98.6% on the test set, occupying a memory portion from 233 kB to 14.1 MB. The NNs trained and tested in this work offer the best trade-off between performance and memory occupation, whereas the trained k-NN models obtained the best performance at the cost of large memory occupation (up to 14.1 MB). The classifiers' performance slightly depends on the signal quality, since a denoising step is performed during pre-processing. To this end, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was acquired before and after the denoising, indicating an improvement between 15 and 30 dB. Constant monitoring is necessary for powdery mildew prevention in field crops because, as a fungal disease, it modifies the green pigments of the leaves and is responsible for production losses. Therefore, there is a need for solutions that assure early disease detection to realize proactive control and management of the disease. The methodology currently used for the identification of powdery mildew disease uses RGB leaf images to detect damage levels. In the early stage of the disease, no symptoms are visible, but this is a point at which the disease can be controlled before the symptoms appear. This study proposes the implementation of a support vector machine to identify powdery mildew on cucurbit plants using RGB images and color transformations. First, we use an image dataset that provides photos covering five growing seasons in different locations and under natural light conditions. Twenty-two texture descriptors using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix result are calculated as the main features. The proposed damage levels are 'healthy leaves', 'leaves in the fungal germination phase', 'leaves with first symptoms', and 'diseased leaves'. The implementation reveals that the accuracy in the L * a * b color space is higher than that when using the combined components, with an accuracy value of 94% and kappa Cohen of 0.7638. Analysis of motion symmetry constitutes an important area with many applications in engineering, robotics, neurology and biomedicine. This paper presents the use of microelectromechanical sensors (MEMS), including accelerometers and gyrometers, to acquire data via mobile devices so as to monitor physical activities and their irregularities. Special attention is devoted to the analysis of the symmetry of the motion of the body when the same exercises are performed by the right and the left limb. The analyzed data include the motion of the legs on a home exercise bike under different levels of load. The method is based on signal analysis using the discrete wavelet transform and the evaluation of signal segment features such as the relative energy at selected decomposition levels. The subsequent classification of the evaluated features is performed by k-nearest neighbours, a Bayesian approach, a support vector machine, and neural networks. The highest average classification accuracy attained is 91.0% and the lowest mean cross-validation error is 0.091, resulting from the use of a neural network. This paper presents the advantages of the use of simple sensors, their combination and intelligent data processing for the numerical evaluation of motion features in the rehabilitation and monitoring of physical activities. The healthy function of the vestibular system (VS) is of vital importance for individuals to carry out their daily activities independently and safely. This study carries out Tsallis entropy (TE)-based analysis on insole force sensor data in order to extract features to differentiate between healthy and VS-diseased individuals. Using a specifically developed algorithm, we detrend the acquired data to examine the fluctuation around the trend curve in order to consider the individual's walking habit and thus increase the accuracy in diagnosis. It is observed that the TE value increases for diseased people as an indicator of the problem of maintaining balance. As one of the main contributions of this study, in contrast to studies in the literature that focus on gait dynamics requiring extensive walking time, we directly process the instantaneous pressure values, enabling a significant reduction in the data acquisition period. The extracted feature set is then inputted into fundamental classification algorithms, with support vector machine (SVM) demonstrating the highest performance, achieving an average accuracy of 95%. This study constitutes a significant step in a larger project aiming to identify the specific VS disease together with its stage. The emotional well-being of a child is crucial for their successful integration into society as a productive individual. While technology has made significant strides in enabling machines to decipher human emotional signals, current research in emotion recognition primarily prioritizes adults, disregarding the fact that children develop emotional awareness at an early stage. This highlights the need to explore how machines can recognize facial expressions in children, although the absence of a standardized database poses a challenge. In this study, we propose a system that employs Convolutional-Neural-Network (CNN)-based models, such as VGG19, VGG16, and Resnet50, as feature extractors, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree (DT) for classification, to automatically recognize children's expressions using a video dataset, namely Children's Spontaneous Facial Expressions (LIRIS-CSE). Our system is evaluated through various experimental setups, including 80–20% split, K-Fold Cross-Validation (K-Fold CV), and leave one out cross-validation (LOOCV), for both image-based and video-based classification. Remarkably, our research achieves a promising classification accuracy of 99% for image-based classification, utilizing features from all three networks with SVM using 80–20% split and K-Fold CV. For video-based classification, we achieve 94% accuracy using features from VGG19 with SVM using LOOCV. These results surpass the performance of the original work, which reported an average image-based classification accuracy of 75% on their LIRIS-CSE dataset. The Android operating system has gained popularity and evolved rapidly since the previous decade. Traditional approaches such as static and dynamic malware identification techniques require a lot of human intervention and resources to design the malware classification model. The real challenge lies with the fact that inspecting all files of the application structure leads to high processing time, more storage, and manual effort. To solve these problems, optimization algorithms and deep learning has been recently tested for mitigating malware attacks. This manuscript proposes Summing of neurAl aRchitecture and VisualizatiOn Technology for Android Malware identification (SARVOTAM). The system converts the malware non-intuitive features into fingerprint images to extract the quality information. A fine-tuned Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used to automatically extract rich features from visualized malware thus eliminating the feature engineering and domain expert cost. The experiments were done using the DREBIN dataset. A total of fifteen different combinations of the Android malware image sections were used to identify and classify Android malware. The softmax layer of CNN was substituted with machine learning algorithms like K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) to analyze the grayscale malware images. It is observed that CNN-SVM model outperformed original CNN as well as CNN-KNN, and CNN-RF. The classification results showed that our method is able to achieve an accuracy of 92.59% using Android certificates and manifest malware images. This paper proposes a computer-aided cirrhosis diagnosis system to diagnose cirrhosis based on ultrasound images. We first propose a method to extract a liver capsule on an ultrasound image, then, based on the extracted liver capsule, we fine-tune a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model to extract features from the image patches cropped around the liver capsules. Finally, a trained support vector machine (SVM) classifier is applied to classify the sample into normal or abnormal cases. Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is a growing area of research due to its numerous applications in market research, video gaming, healthcare, security, e-learning, and robotics. One of the most common frameworks for recognizing facial expressions is by extracting facial features from an image and classifying them as one of several prototypic expressions. Despite the recent advances, it is still a challenging task to develop robust facial expression descriptors. This study aimed to analyze the performances of various local descriptors and classifiers in the FER problem. Several experiments were conducted under different settings, such as varied extraction parameters, different numbers of expressions, and two datasets, to discover the best combinations of local descriptors and classifiers. Of all the considered descriptors, HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) and ALDP (Angled Local Directional Patterns) were some of the most promising, while SVM (Support Vector Machines) and MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) were the best among the considered classifiers. In this paper, we develop a hyperspectral feature extraction method called sparse and smooth low-rank analysis (SSLRA). First, we propose a new low-rank model for hyperspectral images (HSIs) where we decompose the HSI into smooth and sparse components. Then, these components are simultaneously estimated using a nonconvex constrained penalized cost function (CPCF). The proposed CPCF exploits total variation penalty, ℓ 1 penalty, and an orthogonality constraint. The total variation penalty is used to promote piecewise smoothness, and, therefore, it extracts spatial (local neighborhood) information. The ℓ 1 penalty encourages sparse and spatial structures. Additionally, we show that this new type of decomposition improves the classification of the HSIs. In the experiments, SSLRA was applied on the Houston (urban) and the Trento (rural) datasets. The extracted features were used as an input into a classifier (either support vector machines (SVM) or random forest (RF)) to produce the final classification map. Walnuts with their shells are a popular agricultural product in China. However, mildew from growth can sometimes be processed into foods. It is difficult to visually determine which walnuts have mildew without breaking the shells. A non-destructive method for detecting walnuts with mildew was studied by combining spectral data with image information. A total of 120 "Lüling" walnuts with shells were used for the mildew experiment. The characteristics of the spectral data from six surfaces of all samples were collected in the range of 370–1042 nm on days 0, 15, and 30. The spectrum was pretreated using SNV, and the feature bands were extracted using PCA and modeled using a support vector machine (SVM). The results show that the overall classification accuracy was 93%, with an of accuracy of 100% for INEN walnuts (normal internally and externally). The accuracy for IMEM walnuts (mildew internally and externally) reached 87.29%. There was an accuracy of 78.6% for IMEN walnuts (mildew internally and normal externally). The non-destructive detection of mildewed walnuts can be undertaken using hyperspectral imaging technology, which provides a new technique for exploring the mechanisms of walnuts with mildew. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an early stage of cognitive decline or memory loss, commonly found among the elderly. A phonemic verbal fluency (PVF) task is a standard cognitive test that participants are asked to produce words starting with given letters, such as "F" in English and "ก" /k/ in Thai. With state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, features extracted from the PVF data have been widely used to detect MCI. The PVF features, including acoustic features, semantic features, and word grouping, have been studied in many languages but not Thai. However, applying the same PVF feature extraction methods used in English to Thai yields unpleasant results due to different language characteristics. This study performs analytical feature extraction on Thai PVF data to classify MCI patients. In particular, we propose novel approaches to extract features based on phonemic clustering (ability to cluster words by phonemes) and switching (ability to shift between clusters) for the Thai PVF data. The comparison results of the three classifiers revealed that the support vector machine performed the best with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.733 (N = 100). Pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), is a global destructive threat to forests and has led to serious economic losses all over the world. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a feasible and effective method to accurately monitor and estimate PWD infection. In this study, we used hyperspectral imagery (HI) collected by an unmanned airship with a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer to detect PWD in healthy, early, middle and serious infection stages. To avoid massive calculations on the full spectral dimensions of the HI, 16 spectral features were extracted from the HI, and a genetic algorithm (GA) was implemented to identify the optimal ones with the least fitness. Simultaneously, a support vector machine (SVM) classifier was established to predict the PWD infection stage for an individual pine tree. The following results were obtained: (1) the spectral characteristics for pine trees in different PWD infection stages were distinctive in the green region (510–580 nm), red edge (680–760 nm) and near-infrared (780–1000 nm) spectra; (2) the six optimal spectral features (Dgreen, SDgreen, Dred, DRE, DNIR, SDNIR) selected with the GA effectively distinguished the PWD infection stages of pine trees with a lower calculation cost; (3) compared with the traditional classifiers, such as k-nearest neighbor (KNN), random forest (RF) and single SVM, the proposed GA and SVM classifier achieved the highest overall accuracy (95.24%) and Kappa coefficient (0.9234). This study aims to propose a vision-based method to classify mosquito species. To investigate the efficiency of the method, we compared two different classification methods: The handcraft feature-based conventional method and the convolutional neural network-based deep learning method. For the conventional method, 12 types of features were adopted for handcraft feature extraction, while a support vector machine method was adopted for classification. For the deep learning method, three types of architectures were adopted for classification. We built a mosquito image dataset, which included 14,400 images with three types of mosquito species. The dataset comprised 12,000 images for training, 1500 images for testing, and 900 images for validating. Experimental results revealed that the accuracy of the conventional method using the scale-invariant feature transform algorithm was 82.4% at maximum, whereas the accuracy of the deep learning method was 95.5% in a residual network using data augmentation. From the experimental results, deep learning can be considered to be effective for classifying the mosquito species of the proposed dataset. Electromyogram (EMG) signals have been increasingly used for hand and finger gesture recognition. However, most studies have focused on the wrist and whole-hand gestures and not on individual finger (IF) gestures, which are considered more challenging. In this study, we develop EMG-based hand/finger gesture classifiers based on fixed electrode placement using machine learning methods. Ten healthy subjects performed ten hand/finger gestures, including seven IF gestures. EMG signals were measured from three channels, and six time-domain (TD) features were extracted from each channel. A total of 18 features was used to build personalized classifiers for ten gestures with an artificial neural network (ANN), a support vector machine (SVM), a random forest (RF), and a logistic regression (LR). The ANN, SVM, RF, and LR achieved mean accuracies of 0.940, 0.876, 0.831, and 0.539, respectively. One-way analyses of variance and F-tests showed that the ANN achieved the highest mean accuracy and the lowest inter-subject variance in the accuracy, respectively, suggesting that it was the least affected by individual variability in EMG signals. Using only TD features, we achieved a higher ratio of gestures to channels than other similar studies, suggesting that the proposed method can improve the system usability and reduce the computational burden. Glaucoma is one of the eye diseases stimulated by the fluid pressure that increases in the eyes, damaging the optic nerves and causing partial or complete vision loss. As Glaucoma appears in later stages and it is a slow disease, detailed screening and detection of the retinal images is required to avoid vision forfeiture. This study aims to detect glaucoma at early stages with the help of deep learning-based feature extraction. Retinal fundus images are utilized for the training and testing of our proposed model. In the first step, images are pre-processed, before the region of interest (ROI) is extracted employing segmentation. Then, features of the optic disc (OD) are extracted from the images containing optic cup (OC) utilizing the hybrid features descriptors, i.e., convolutional neural network (CNN), local binary patterns (LBP), histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), and speeded up robust features (SURF). Moreover, low-level features are extracted using HOG, whereas texture features are extracted using the LBP and SURF descriptors. Furthermore, high-level features are computed using CNN. Additionally, we have employed a feature selection and ranking technique, i.e., the MR-MR method, to select the most representative features. In the end, multi-class classifiers, i.e., support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN), are employed for the classification of fundus images as healthy or diseased. To assess the performance of the proposed system, various experiments have been performed using combinations of the aforementioned algorithms that show the proposed model based on the RF algorithm with HOG, CNN, LBP, and SURF feature descriptors, providing ≤99% accuracy on benchmark datasets and 98.8% on k-fold cross-validation for the early detection of glaucoma. Traditional co-word networks do not discriminate keywords of researcher interest from general keywords. Co-word networks are therefore often too general to provide knowledge if interest to domain experts. Inspired by the recent work that uses an automatic method to identify the questions of interest to researchers like "problems" and "solutions", we try to answer a similar question "what sensors can be used for what kind of applications", which is great interest in sensor- related fields. By generalizing the specific questions as "questions of interest", we built a knowledge network considering researcher interest, called bipartite network of interest (BNOI). Different from a co-word approaches using accurate keywords from a list, BNOI uses classification models to find possible entities of interest. A total of nine feature extraction methods including N-grams, Word2Vec, BERT, etc. were used to extract features to train the classification models, including naïve Bayes (NB), support vector machines (SVM) and logistic regression (LR). In addition, a multi-feature fusion strategy and a voting principle (VP) method are applied to assemble the capability of the features and the classification models. Using the abstract text data of 350 remote sensing articles, features are extracted and the models trained. The experiment results show that after removing the biased words and using the ten-fold cross-validation method, the F-measure of "sensors" and "applications" are 93.2% and 85.5%, respectively. It is thus demonstrated that researcher questions of interest can be better answered by the constructed BNOI based on classification results, comparedwith the traditional co-word network approach. Scene classification relying on images is essential in many systems and applications related to remote sensing. The scientific interest in scene classification from remotely collected images is increasing, and many datasets and algorithms are being developed. The introduction of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and other deep learning techniques contributed to vast improvements in the accuracy of image scene classification in such systems. To classify the scene from areal images, we used a two-stream deep architecture. We performed the first part of the classification, the feature extraction, using pre-trained CNN that extracts deep features of aerial images from different network layers: the average pooling layer or some of the previous convolutional layers. Next, we applied feature concatenation on extracted features from various neural networks, after dimensionality reduction was performed on enormous feature vectors. We experimented extensively with different CNN architectures, to get optimal results. Finally, we used the Support Vector Machine (SVM) for the classification of the concatenated features. The competitiveness of the examined technique was evaluated on two real-world datasets: UC Merced and WHU-RS. Several facial expression recognition methods cluster facial elements according to similarity and weight them considering the importance of each element in classification. However, these methods are limited by the pre-definitions of units restricting modification of the structure during optimization. This study proposes a modified support vector machine classifier called Grid Map, which is combined with reinforcement learning to improve the classification accuracy. To optimize training, the input image size is normalized according to the cascade rules of a pre-processing detector, and the regional weights are assigned by an adaptive cell size that divides each region of the image using bounding grids. Reducing the size of the bounding grid reduces the area used for feature extraction, allowing more detailed weighted features to be extracted. Error-correcting output codes with a histogram of gradient is selected as the classification method via an experiment to determine the optimal feature and classifier selection. The proposed method is formulated into a decision process and solved via Q-learning. To classify seven emotions, the proposed method exhibits accuracies of 96.36% and 98.47% for four databases and Extended Cohn-–Kanade Dataset (CK+), respectively. Photovoltaic (PV) energy has become one of the main sources of renewable energy and is currently the fastest-growing energy technology. As PV energy continues to grow in importance, the investigation of the faults and degradation of PV systems is crucial for better stability and performance of electrical systems. In this work, a fault classification algorithm is proposed to achieve accurate and early failure detection in PV systems. The analysis is carried out considering the feature extraction capabilities of the wavelet transform and classification attributes of radial basis function networks (RBFNs). In order to improve the performance of the proposed classifier, the dynamic fusion of kernels is performed. The performance of the proposed technique is tested on a 1 kW single-phase stand-alone PV system, which depicted a 100% training efficiency under 13 s and 97% testing efficiency under 0.2 s, which is better than the techniques in the literature. Today, more and more deep learning frameworks are being applied to hyperspectral image classification tasks and have achieved great results. However, such approaches are still hampered by long training times. Traditional spectral–spatial hyperspectral image classification only utilizes spectral features at the pixel level, without considering the correlation between local spectral signatures. Our article has tested a novel hyperspectral image classification pattern, using random-patches convolution and local covariance (RPCC). The RPCC is an effective two-branch method that, on the one hand, obtains a specified number of convolution kernels from the image space through a random strategy and, on the other hand, constructs a covariance matrix between different spectral bands by clustering local neighboring pixels. In our method, the spatial features come from multi-scale and multi-level convolutional layers. The spectral features represent the correlations between different bands. We use the support vector machine as well as spectral and spatial fusion matrices to obtain classification results. Through experiments, RPCC is tested with five excellent methods on three public data-sets. This study investigated classification of six types of head motions using mechanomyography (MMG) signals. An unequal segmenting algorithm was adopted to segment the MMG signals generated by head motions. Three types of features (time domain, time-frequency domain and nonlinear dynamics) were extracted to construct five feature sets as candidate datasets for classification analysis. Genetic algorithm optimized support vector machine (GA-SVM) was used to classify the MMG signals. Three different kernel functions, different combinations of feature sets, different number of signal channels and training samples were selected for comparative analysis to evaluate the classification accuracy. Experimental results showed that the classifier had the best overall classification accuracy when using the radial basis function (RBF). Any combination of three different types of feature sets guaranteed an average accuracy of over 80%. In the case of the best combination (feature set 2 + 3 + 5), the classification accuracy was up to 88.2%. Using four channels to acquire MMG signal and no less than 60 training samples can assure a satisfactory classification accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the development of high-resolution optical sensors, the classification of ground objects combined with multivariate optical sensors is a hot topic at present. Deep learning methods, such as convolutional neural networks, are applied to feature extraction and classification. In this work, a novel deep belief network (DBN) hyperspectral image classification method based on multivariate optical sensors and stacked by restricted Boltzmann machines is proposed. We introduced the DBN framework to classify spatial hyperspectral sensor data on the basis of DBN. Then, the improved method (combination of spectral and spatial information) was verified. After unsupervised pretraining and supervised fine-tuning, the DBN model could successfully learn features. Additionally, we added a logistic regression layer that could classify the hyperspectral images. Moreover, the proposed training method, which fuses spectral and spatial information, was tested over the Indian Pines and Pavia University datasets. The advantages of this method over traditional methods are as follows: (1) the network has deep structure and the ability of feature extraction is stronger than traditional classifiers; (2) experimental results indicate that our method outperforms traditional classification and other deep learning approaches.
