A new approach for the chemical modification of the surface of paper based on the application of colloidal mixtures containing cationic starch and polyoxometalates on uncoated base paper is presented. Polyoxometalates with the Keggin-type structure and physical properties similar to those presented by coating pigments, namely H3PW12O40∙23H2O, H4SiW12O40∙24H2O, and K7PW11O39∙9H2O, have been used in order to improve the quality of inkjet printing. The analysis of the different samples by FTIRATR spectroscopy showed the presence of the polyoxometalates (and the cationic starch) on the top surface of the paper. In addition, the determination of surface energy parameters, namely the polar component (σsp) and the dispersive component (σsd) of the surface energy, by contact angle measurements revealed that, for the new samples, the polar component level was much higher than that of the uncoated base paper. In the past 20 years, perovskite-related research has attracted wide attention. The related research into two-dimensional/quasi-two-dimensional perovskite has propelled the research of perovskite materials to a new height. To improve the properties of quasi-2D perovskite, improve the stability of materials, and achieve specific functions, using different types, volumes, and lengths of organic spacers is an essential method. In this paper, quasi-2D perovskites with EDA (ethylene diammonium), PDA (1,3-propanediammonium), and BDA (1,4-butanediammonium) (m = 2–4) as organic spacers were prepared, and the effects of different organic spacers on the 2D perovskite were investigated. The results show that the length of the organic spacer significantly impacts the perovskite's properties. A shorter organic spacer can effectively reduce the quantum confinement and dielectric confinement in perovskite. It should be noted that if the organic spacer is too short, the stability of the quasi-2D perovskite will be greatly reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A superatom is a cluster of atoms that acts like a single atom. Two main groups of superatoms are superalkalis and superhalogens, which mimic the chemistry of alkali and halogen atoms, respectively. The ionization energies of superalkalis are smaller than those of alkalis (<3.89 eV for cesium atom), and the electron affinities of superhalogens are larger than that of halogens (>3.61 eV for chlorine atom). Exploring new superalkali/superhalogen aims to provide reliable data and predictions of the use of such compounds as redox agents in the reduction/oxidation of counterpart systems, as well as the role they can play more generally in materials science. The low ionization energies of superalkalis make them candidates for catalysts for CO2 conversion into renewable fuels and value-added chemicals. The large electron affinity of superhalogens makes them strong oxidizing agents for bonding and removing toxic molecules from the environment. By using the superatoms as building blocks of cluster-assembled materials, we can achieve the functional features of atom-based materials (like conductivity or catalytic potential) while having more flexibility to achieve higher performance. This feature paper covers the issues of designing such compounds and demonstrates how modifications of the superatoms (superhalogens and superalkalis) allow for the tuning of the electronic structure and might be used to create unique functional materials. The designed superatoms can form stable perovskites for solar cells, electrolytes for Li-ion batteries of electric vehicles, superatomic solids, and semiconducting materials. In fair weather, the vertical atmospheric electric field is oriented downward (positive in the earth surface ordinate system) in the global atmospheric circuit. Some researchers have revealed the unique phenomenon whereby once an upward vertical atmospheric electric field is observed in fair weather, an earthquake (EQ) follows within 2–48 h regardless of the EQ magnitude. However, the mechanism has not been explained with a suitable physical model. In this paper, a physical model is presented considering four types of forces acting on charged particles in the air. It is demonstrated that the heavier positive ions and lighter negative ions are rapidly separated. Finally, a reversed fair weather electrostatic field is formed by the above charge separation process. Supercapacitors have many applications in new energy and other high-tech fields. The desolvation effect on ions affects the capacity size of supercapacitors, and there are few relevant studies published in this field at present. In this experiment, bilayer graphene (BG) with a layer spacing of 4–10 Å was used as a model of flat pores and was calculated with first-principles calculations, which can effectively simulate the adsorption behaviour of porous carbon. The reaction energies of ions, propylene carbonate, and ionic complexes in bilayer graphene with different layer spacings were calculated, and the desolvation behaviour of lithium salt cations (Li+), tetraethyl quaternary ammonium salt cations (TEA+), triethyl methyl quaternary ammonium salt cations (TEMA+), and bipyrrolidinium quaternary ammonium salt cations (SBP+) was investigated. The calculation was based on density functional compact bound (DFTB+) software. The calculated results show that in the stacked system, the complete desolvation size of the TEA+ reaches 5.6 Å, the complete desolvation size of the TEMA+ reaches 4.9 Å, the complete desolvation size of the SBP+ reaches 4.8 Å, and the complete desolvation size of the Li+ reaches 5.4 Å, with the organic electrolyte cations showing a positive trend in the complete desolvation size as the ion radius increases. An in-depth analysis of the data shows that Li+, TEA+, TEMA+, and SBP+ ion radii play a dominant role in the size of desolvation. Supercapacitors have a wide range of applications in high-technology fields. The desolvation of organic electrolyte cations affects the capacity size and conductivity of supercapacitors. However, few relevant studies have been published in this field. In this experiment, the adsorption behavior of porous carbon was simulated with first-principles calculations using a graphene bilayer with a layer spacing of 4–10 Å as a hydroxyl-flat pore model. The reaction energies of quaternary ammonium cations, acetonitrile, and quaternary ammonium cationic complexes were calculated in a graphene bilayer with different interlayer spacings, and the desolvation behavior of TEA+ and SBP+ ions was described. The critical size for the complete desolvation of [TEA(AN)]+ was 4.7 Å, and the partial desolvation size ranged from 4.7 to 4.8 Å. The critical size for the complete desolvation of [SBP(AN)]+ was 5.2 Å, and the partial desolvation size ranged from 5.2 to 5.5 Å. As the ionic radius of the quaternary ammonium cation decreased, the desolvation size showed a positive trend. A density of states (DOS) analysis of the desolvated quaternary ammonium cations embedded in the hydroxyl-flat pore structure showed that the conductivity of the hydroxyl-flat pore was enhanced after gaining electrons. The Solar Wind Ion Focusing Thruster (SWIFT) is a highly-innovative propellantless propulsion concept, recently proposed by Gemmer and Mazzoleni. In its nominal configuration, a SWIFT consists of a conically-shaped mesh of positively-charged conducting tethers, with its vertex linked to the spacecraft and its axis oriented towards the Sun. The SWIFT collects and filters the solar wind plasma and suitably directs the positive ions, which are then accelerated by an ion thruster. Such a device is theoretically able to generate a deep-space propulsive acceleration that comes, in part, from the solar wind dynamic pressure impinging on the conical grid and, in part, from the positive ion beam. In particular, the orientation of the ion beam may be chosen in such a way as to set the resultant propulsive acceleration and steer the spacecraft. The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of a SWIFT-propelled spacecraft in an orbit-to-orbit two-dimensional interplanetary transfer. To that end, some mission scenarios are studied, in an optimal framework, by minimizing the total flight time necessary for the spacecraft to complete the transfer as a function of the propulsion system performance parameters. Numerical simulations are used to compare the optimal flight times calculated in simplified Earth–Venus and Earth–Mars transfers with those obtained by considering other propellantless propulsion systems. Mixtures of powder and liquid are ubiquitous in nature as well as industries and exhibit complex flowing and deforming behaviors, including sol to gel transition under shear stress. In order to better understand the characteristic features of this type of mixture, we observed the behavior of a mixture of colloidal silica particles and water as a model system under vibration. The mixture showed different states, from powder-like to viscous fluid-like, with increasing content of water. At certain concentrations of silica particles (around 70 wt. %) and under relatively faster vibration (over 17 Hz), we observed that the colloidal suspension of silica particles and water climbed up the wall of a container against gravity. The main purpose of this paper is to report how we can observe the climbing suspension of colloidal silica. The rheological measurements of the climbing suspension demonstrated that the climbing suspension showed shear-thickening behavior, where force chain networks and normal stress differences are considered to develop. Therefore, we speculate that the transient formation and breaking of force networks and normal stress differences under vibration contribute to the occurrence of the climbing suspension. An hourly scale precursor of inland earthquakes (EQs) is revealed in this paper. Several EQ cases in China have been reported. As indicated by a table listing 23 inland EQs and their shock time, epicenter location, magnitude, near-epicenter weather conditions, precursor start time and precursor duration, when the weather conditions are fair near the epicenter, an anomalously negative atmospheric electrostatic signal is readily observable approximately 2–48 h before the EQ occurs. Moreover, a successful single-station alarm for nearby moderate-magnitude EQs is demonstrated, and a possible mechanism for the precursor signal is proposed. The change in the electrostatic field during an EQ process is explained as the release of radioactive gases from the subsurface into the atmosphere via large (regional-scale) preexisting microfractures in the rock at the source depth. These gases considerably ionize the atmosphere, and the separated positive and negative ions establish a special macroscopic electric field. The ability of humus substances to form stable complexes with inorganic and organic soil constituents plays a vital role in the generation of environmental pollution, migration, and pollutants transformation. This paper deals with the study of the sorption of metallic elements (Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Mg, Zn) in Andosols, Cambisols, and Planosols on Slovak soil types based on the detection of the quality and quantity of humus substances and soil textural properties. Five soil profiles from two areas in the central part of the Western Carpathians on volcanic rocks in Slovakia were investigated. HS values increased with Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, and Mg. Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, K, Mn, Cu, and Zn increased with the FA fraction. Al, Ca, Fe, K, and Mg were increasing with increasing HA values. In the HA fraction, a very tight relationship was among K and Fe contents (r = 0.902). In the FA fraction, we found with increasing Cu content, Ca content also increased (r = 0.959). The HS values were positively correlated with the silt and negatively correlated with the clay and the sand fraction. Only the elements Mn and Zn in Planosol were below the detection limit. In this paper, the corona discharge process of the bar-plate gap at −1 kV DC voltage is simulated using a two-dimensional axisymmetric plasma module. We analyze the variation of air negative corona discharge current, and the distribution morphology of microparticles in different discharge stages in detail. The significance of plasma chemical reactions at some typical time and the distribution characteristics of heavy particles are investigated according to reaction rates. Results show that, in the current rising stage, the collision ionization reactions (e.g., R1 and R2) and electron adsorption reaction (e.g., R3) play a major role, which lead to the increase in charged particles and the formation of an electron avalanche. In the current drop stage, all reaction rates decreased, except for collision ionization and electron attachment, partial charge transfer reactions (e.g., R8, R10, R11, and R14), and composite reactions (e.g., R16, R17, and R18), which come into play and gradually reduce the number of charged ions in the gap. In the current stabilizing stage, the main chemical reactions are composite reactions (e.g., R16 and R17), then the corona discharge ends. For the heavy particle distribution, O2+ and O4+ are the main positive ions, O2− is the most abundant negative ions, and the neutral particles are mainly O. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the systematic studies of the sorption capacity of natural zeolite with respect to In3+ and Ga3+ cations in the model systems "natural zeolite–In3+–H2O" and "natural zeolite–In3+–Ga3+–H2O", while varying a number of the main process factors. The patterns of sorption of In3+ and Ga3+ cations by the natural zeolite of the Shankanai deposit are revealed, depending on the zeolite vs. solution ratio, temperature, and time. It is shown that the sorption of In3+ cations by natural zeolite can be controlled by the process duration. The longer the process, the less the sorption by natural zeolite. It has been found that the sorption of In3+ cations in the "natural zeolite–In3+–Ga3+–H2O" model system depends on the amount of zeolite and temperature, and the sorption of Ga3+ cations depends on the temperature and time. Due to the fact that surfactant molecules are known to alter the structure (and consequently the function) of a protein, protein-surfactant interactions are very important in the biological, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Although there are numerous studies on the interactions of albumins with surfactants, the investigations are often performed at fixed environmental conditions and limited to separate surface-active agents and consequently do not present an appropriate comparison between their different types and structures. In the present paper, the interactions between selected cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants, namely hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), polyethylene glycol sorbitan monolaurate, monopalmitate, and monooleate (TWEEN 20, TWEEN 40, and TWEEN 80, respectively) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) were studied qualitatively and quantitatively in an aqueous solution (10 mM cacodylate buffer; pH 5.0 and 7.0) by steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy supported by UV spectrophotometry and CD spectroscopy. Since in the case of all studied systems, the fluorescence intensity of BSA decreased regularly and significantly under the action of the surfactants added, the fluorescence quenching mechanism was analyzed thoroughly with the use of the Stern-Volmer equation (and its modification) and attributed to the formation of BSA-surfactant complexes. The binding efficiency and mode of interactions were evaluated among others by the determination, comparison, and discussion of the values of binding (association) constants of the newly formed complexes and the corresponding thermodynamic parameters (Δ G , Δ H , Δ S ). Furthermore, the influence of the structure of the chosen surfactants (charge of hydrophilic head and length of hydrophobic chain) as well as different environmental conditions (pH, temperature) on the binding mode and the strength of the interaction has been investigated and elucidated.

In this paper, functionalized sodium alginate hydrogel (FSAH) was prepared to efficiently adsorb heavy metals and dyes. Hydrazide-functionalized sodium alginate (SA) prepared hydrazone groups to selectively capture heavy metals (Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+), and another functional group (dopamine grafting), serves as sites for adsorption methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), crystal violet (CV). Thermodynamic parameters of adsorption indicated that the adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous. The heavy metals adsorption by FSAH was physical adsorption mainly due to ΔHθ < 40 kJ/mol, and the adsorption of cationic dyes fitted with the Langmuir models, which indicated that the monolayer adsorption is dominated by hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and π-π interactions. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency maintained above 70% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. To sum up, FSAH has great application prospect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emergence of a large number of bacterial strains resistant to many drugs or disinfectants currently used contributed to the search of new, more effective antimicrobial agents. In the presented paper, we assessed the microbiocidal activity of tri- and tetranuclear oxo-titanium(IV) complexes (TOCs), which were dispersed in the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. The TOCs were synthesized in reaction to Ti(OR) 4 (R = i Pr, i Bu) and HO 2 CR' (R' = 4-PhNH 2 and 4-PhOH) in a 4:1 molar ratio at room temperature and in Ar atmosphere. The structure of isolated oxo-complexes was confirmed by IR and Raman spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activity of the produced composites (PMMA + TOCs) was estimated against Gram-positive ( Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and S. aureus ATCC 25923) and Gram-negative ( Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 and E. coli ATCC 25922) bacteria and yeasts of Candida albicans ATCC 10231. All produced composites showed biocidal activity against the bacteria. Composites containing {Ti 4 O 2 } cores and the {Ti 3 O} core stabilized by the 4-hydroxybenzoic ligand showed also high activity against yeasts. The results of investigations carried out suggest that produced (PMMA + TOCs) composites, due to their microbiocidal activity, could find an application in the elimination of microbial contaminations in various fields of our lives.

Molecular dications are doubly charged cations of importance in flames, plasma chemistry and physics and in the chemistry of the upper atmosphere of Planets. Furthermore, they are exotic species able to store a considerable amount of energy at a molecular level. This high energy content of several eV can be easily released as translational energy of the two fragment monocations generated by their Coulomb explosion. For such a reason, they were proposed as a new kind of alternative propellant. The present topic review paper reports on an overview of the main contributions made by the authors' research groups in the generation and characterization of simple molecular dications during the last 40 years of coupling experimental and theoretical efforts.

Polyhydroborate salts represent the important class of energy materials attracting significant recent attention. Some of these salts exhibit promising hydrogen storage properties and/or high ionic conductivities favorable for applications as solid electrolytes in batteries. Two basic types of thermally activated atomic jump motion are known to exist in these materials: the reorientational (rotational) motion of complex anions and the translational diffusion of cations or complex anions. The present paper reviews recent progress in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of both reorientational and diffusive jump motion in polyhydroborate salts. The emphasis is put on sodium and lithium closo -borates exhibiting high ionic conductivity and on borohydride-based systems showing extremely fast reorientational motion down to low temperatures. For these systems, we discuss the effects of order-disorder phase transitions on the parameters of reorientations and diffusive jumps, as well as the mechanism of low-temperature rotational tunneling.

In this work, lignin fractionation is proposed as an effective approach to reduce the heterogeneity of lignin and improve the adsorption and recycle performances of lignin as a cationic dye adsorbent. By stepwise dissolution of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin in 95% and 80% ethanol solutions, three lignin subdivisions (95% ethanol-soluble subdivision, 80% ethanol-soluble subdivision, and 80% ethanol-insoluble subdivision) were obtained. The three lignin subdivisions were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), FTIR, 2D-NMR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and their adsorption capacities for methylene blue were compared. The results showed that the 80% ethanol-insoluble subdivision exhibited the highest adsorption capacity and its value (396.85 mg/g) was over 0.4 times higher than that of the unfractionated lignin (281.54 mg/g). The increased adsorption capacity was caused by the enhancement of both specific surface area and negative Zeta potential. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 80% ethanol-insoluble subdivision by adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies was found to be 431.1 mg/g, which was much higher than most of reported lignin-based adsorbents. Moreover, the 80% ethanol-insoluble subdivision had much higher regeneration yield (over 90% after 5 recycles) compared with the other two subdivisions. Consequently, the proposed fractionation method is proved to be a novel and efficient non-chemical modification approach that significantly improves adsorption capacity and recyclability of lignin.

4,8-Dihydrodifurazano[3,4- b , e ]pyrazine (DFP) is one kind of parent compound for the synthesis of various promising difurazanopyrazine derivatives. In this paper, eleven series of energetic salts composed of 4,8-dihydrodifurazano[3,4- b , e ]pyrazine-based anions and ammonium-based cations were designed. Their densities, heats of formation, energetic properties, impact sensitivity, and thermodynamics of formation were studied and compared based on density functional theory and volume-based thermodynamics method. Results show that ammonium and hydroxylammonium salts exhibit higher densities and more excellent detonation performance than guanidinium and triaminoguanidinium salts. Therein, the substitution with electron-withdrawing groups (-NO 2 , -CH 2 NF 2 , -CH 2 ONO 2 , -C(NO 2 ) 3 , -CH 2 N 3 ) contributes to enhancing the densities, heats of formation, and detonation properties of the title salts, and the substitution of -C(NO 2 ) 3 features the best performance. Incorporating N-O oxidation bond to difurazano[3,4- b , e ]pyrazine anion gives a rise to the detonation performance of the title salts, while increasing their impact sensitivity meanwhile. Importantly, triaminoguanidinium 4,8-dihydrodifurazano[3,4- b , e ]pyrazine (J4) has been successfully synthesized. The experimentally determined density and H 50 value of J4 are 1.602 g/cm 3 and higher than 112 cm, which are consistent with theoretical values, supporting the reliability of calculation methods. J4 proves to be a thermally stable and energetic explosive with decomposition peak temperature of 216.7 °C, detonation velocity 7732 m/s, and detonation pressure 25.42 GPa, respectively. These results confirm that the derivative work in furazanopyrazine compounds is an effective strategy to design and screen out potential candidates for high-performance energetic salts.

Several tetrahydroxidohexaoxidopentaborate(1-) salts of N-substituted diimidazolium cations or N-substituted dipyrrolidinium cations linked through N-C6-N chains have been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically (NMR, IR) and by single-crystal XRD studies: [R(NC3H3N)(CH2)6(NC3H3N)R][B5O6(OH)4]2·xH2O (R = Me, x = 0 (1); R = Et, x = 3 (2); [Me(NC3H3N)(CH2(C6H4)CH2)(NC3H3N)Me][B5O6(OH)4]2 (3), [(C4H8N)(R)(CH2)6(R)(NC4H8)][B5O6(OH)4]2·xB(OH)3 (R = Me, x = 0 (4, two polymorphs); R = Et, x = 0 (5); R = Bu, x = 4 (6); R = allyl, x = 0 (7)). Representative samples (1 and 7) were also characterized by thermal (TGA/DSC) studies; compounds are thermally decomposed to B2O3 in air. Numerous anion-anion H-bonding interactions are present in the solid-state structures of 1–5 and 7 as giant anionic networks. Unusually, in 6 there are no R22(8) anion-anion interactions as the co-crystallized B(OH)3 bridges between all pentaborate anions. H-bonding interactions in 1–7 have been examined using Etter graph set analysis; C(8), C33(18), R22(8), R22(12) and R44(12) motifs have been identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite extensive research on particulate matter (PM) pollution in India's Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), source apportionment remains challenging. This study investigates the effect of particulate matter (PM10)-associated water soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) on ambient air concentration across the middle IGP from January to December 2018. Moreover, the seasonal fluctuation and chemical characterization of PM10 were assessed for the year 2018. The results revealed a high concentration of PM10 (156 µg/m3), exceeding the WHO and National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) limits. The highest PM10 levels were observed during autumn, winter, summer, and the rainy season. The study identified SO42− and NH4+ as the most common WSIIs, constituting 46% and 23% of the total WSIIs. Source apportionment analysis indicated that street dust, biomass burning, and vehicle and industrial emissions together with secondary formation significantly contributed to IGP's PM pollution. Additionally, the investigation of air mass back trajectory suggests that air quality in IGP is largely influenced by eastern and western Maritime air masses originated from the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, Gujarat, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Micro-corona devices could be extensively utilized in gas sensing, switchgear, biomedicine, and other fields. As the influence mechanism of the cathode curvature radius on micro-corona discharge dynamical processes is very important for performance optimization and the promotion of these devices, a micro-scale corona discharge gas model in a mixture of N2-O2 is proposed based on the fluid–chemical mixing method, which describes the dynamic process of the discharge at atmosphere and normal temperatures. To reveal the influence mechanism of the nanowire curvature radius on the micro-corona discharge, the effect of the cathode nanowire radius on the discharge current, electric field, ionization reaction rate, and charged particle characteristics at different gaps and voltages were determined. The findings indicate that the effect of curvature radius on discharge intensity varies under different gap and voltage conditions. Further analysis indicates that an increase in curvature radius reduces the electric field near the tip while increasing the ionization area and secondary emission area as well as the number of positive ions in the space, consequently affecting the coupling process between the collision ionization and the secondary emission. Especially under the conditions of either small gap or low voltage, a suitable increase in the curvature radius could promote the coupling process and then increase the discharge current. Futibatinib is an excellent fibroblast growth factor receptor 1–4 (FGFR 1–4) inhibitor that exhibits selective anti-tumor activeness against FGFR-deregulated tumors. A new high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) technique for the quantitative analysis of futibatinib in beagle dog plasma was developed, and the effect of Yinchenhao decoction (YCHD) on the pharmacokinetics of futibatinib was evaluated. After processing plasma samples with ethyl acetate extraction in the alkaline condition of sodium carbonate, a C18 column (4.6 mm × 150, 5 μm) was used to accomplish the separation of futibatinib and ripretinib (internal standard, ISTD), with the mobile phase consisting of methanol and 0.1% formic acid in water (60:40). The scanning method adopted a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode with positive ion detection through the triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The ion transitions for futibatinib and IS were m/z 419.20 → 296.15 and m/z 510.36 → 417.00, respectively. Futibatinib displayed excellent linearity in the range of 1–200 ng/mL. Neither inter-day nor intra-day precision exceeded 6.3%. The %RE values for accuracy ranged from −3.1% to 0.9%. The recovery, stability, and matrix effect of futibatinib also complied with the guidelines for the validation of quantitative analysis methods for biological samples in the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In combination with YCHD, the Cmax of futibatinib increased by 40.84% compared to futibatinib dosage alone., and the AUC(0–t) and AUC(0–∞) of futibatinib increased by 78.06% and 82.71%, respectively. The Vd and CL of futibatinib were reduced by 20.05% and 40.85%, respectively. T1/2 was extended from 3.88 h to 5.26 h. The results indicated that YCHD could affect the pharmacokinetics of futibatinib and increase the plasma exposure of futibatinib. The presence of dyes in wastewater effluents made from the textile industry is a major environmental problem due to their complex structure and poor biodegradability. In this study, a cationic lignin polymer was synthesized via the free radical polymerization of lignin with [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC) and used to remove anionic azo-dyes (reactive black 5, RB5, and reactive orange 16, RO16) from simulated wastewater. The effects of pH, salt, and concentration of dyes, as well as the charge density and molecular weight of lignin-METAC polymer on dye removal were examined. Results demonstrated that lignin-METAC was an effective flocculant for the removal of dye via charge neutralization and bridging mechanisms. The dye removal efficiency of lignin-METAC polymer was independent of pH. The dosage of the lignin polymer required for reaching the maximum removal had a linear relationship with the dye concentration. The presence of inorganic salts including NaCl, NaNO₃, and Na₂SO₄ had a marginal effect on the dye removal. Under the optimized conditions, greater than 98% of RB5 and 94% of RO16 were removed at lignin-METAC concentrations of 120 mg/L and 105 mg/L in the dye solutions, respectively.

This paper from the field of environmental chemistry offers an innovative use of sorbents in the treatment of waste industrial water. Various industrial activities, especially the use of technological fluids in machining, surface treatment of materials, ore extraction, pesticide use in agriculture, etc., create wastewater containing dangerous metals that cause serious health problems. This paper presents the results of studies of the natural zeolite clinoptilolite as a sorbent of copper cations. These results provide the measurement of the sorption kinetics as well as the observed parameters of sorption of copper cations from the aquatic environment to the clinoptilolite from a promising Slovak site. The effectiveness of the natural sorbent is also compared with that of certain known synthetic sorbents.

Some hearing, vestibular, and vision disorders are imputable to voltage-gated Ca2+ channels of the sensory cells. These channels convey a large Ca2+ influx despite extracellular Na+ being 70-fold more concentrated than Ca2+; such high selectivity is lost in low Ca2+, and Na+ can permeate. Since the permeation properties and molecular identity of sensory Ca2+ channels are debated, in this paper, we examine the Na+ current flowing through the L- and R-type Ca2+ channels of labyrinth hair cells. Ion currents and cytosolic free Ca2+ concentrations were simultaneously monitored in whole-cell recording synchronous to fast fluorescence imaging. L-type and R-type channels were present with different densities at selected sites. In 10 nM Ca2+, the activation and deactivation time constants of the L-type Na+ current were accelerated and its maximal amplitude increased by 6-fold compared to physiological Ca2+. The deactivation of the R-type Na+ current was not accelerated, and its current amplitude increased by 2.3-fold in low Ca2+; moreover, it was partially blocked by nifedipine in a voltage- and time-dependent manner. In conclusion, L channel gating is affected by the ion species permeating the channel, and its selectivity filter binds Ca2+ more strongly than that of R channel; furthermore, external Ca2+ prevents nifedipine from perturbing the R selectivity filter. In this paper, three cationic glycolipids with different hydrophobic chains Malt-DiC12MA ( IX a ), Malt-DiC14MA ( IX b ) and Malt-DiC16MA ( IX c ) were constructed by using maltose as starting material via peracetylation, selective 1- O -deacetylation, trichloroacetimidation, glycosylation, azidation, deacetylation, Staudinger reaction, tertiary amination and quaternization. Target compounds and some intermediates were characterized by ¹H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, ¹H-¹H COSY and ¹H- 13 C HSQC. The results of gel electrophoresis assay, atomic force microscopy images (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) demonstrate that all the liposomes could efficiently bind and compact DNA (N/P ratio less than 2) into nanoparticles with proper size (88 nm-146 nm, PDI < 0.4) and zeta potential (+15 mV-+26 mV). The transfection efficiency and cellular uptake of glycolipids in HEK293 cell were evaluated through the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) expression and Cy3-labeled pEGFP-C1 (Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein plasmid) images, respectively. Importantly, it indicated that Malt-DiC14MA exhibited high gene transfer efficiency and better uptake capability at N/P ratios of 8:1. Additionally, the result of cell viability showed glycolipids exhibited low biotoxicity and good biocompatibility by thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

In the external drainage water of Xinjiang Karamay Petrochemical Company, the calcium and magnesium ion contents are as high as 630 mg/L and 1170 mg/L, respectively. These ions are subsequently scaled at large quantities in water treatment equipment, which greatly reduces the efficiency of the process. This study used a coupled chemical precipitation (CP) and electrocoagulation (EC) method to deal with external drainage water. The results show that the removal rates of calcium and magnesium were 94.71% and 96.33%, respectively, when the pH was adjusted with sodium silicate and EC was introduced after saturating the water samples with CO2. In this study, a quadratic polynomial equation was developed for predicting the removal of calcium and magnesium ions using this coupled technique under three factors of current density (CD) (15, 20 and 25 mA/cm2), reaction time (RT) (30, 40 and 50 min) and pH (10.0, 10.5 and 11.0). It was found that these three variables have a significant effect on the removal of both the abovementioned ions. The response surface method based on a Box–Behnken design showed that the average removal rates of calcium and magnesium ions could be 96.57% and 98.66% at a CD of 22 mA/cm2, RT of 46 min and pH of 11. This study confirmed the presence of calcium carbonate in the solid product through XRD and SEM analysis. The results indicate that this study is promising, and the developed technique can also be used to remove the high concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions from different wastewaters. Esterquats constitute a unique group of quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) that contain an ester bond in the structure of the cation. Despite the numerous advantages of this class of compounds, only two mini-reviews discuss the subject of esterquats: the first one (2007) briefly summarizes their types, synthesis, and structural elements required for a beneficial environmental profile and only briefly covers their applications whereas the second one only reviews the stability of selected betaine-type esterquats in aqueous solutions. The rationale for writing this review is to critically reevaluate the relevant literature and provide others with a "state-of-the-art" snapshot of choline-type esterquats and betaine-type esterquats. Hence, the first part of this survey thoroughly summarizes the most important scientific reports demonstrating effective synthesis routes leading to the formation of both types of esterquats. In the second section, the susceptibility of esterquats to hydrolysis is explained, and the influence of various factors, such as the pH, the degree of salinity, or the temperature of the solution, was subjected to thorough analysis that includes quantitative components. The next two sections refer to various aspects associated with the ecotoxicity of esterquats. Consequently, their biodegradation and toxic effects on microorganisms are extensively analyzed as crucial factors that can affect their commercialization. Then, the reported applications of esterquats are briefly discussed, including the functionalization of macromolecules, such as cotton fabric as well as their successful utilization on a commercial scale. The last section demonstrates the most essential conclusions and reported drawbacks that allow us to elucidate future recommendations regarding the development of these promising chemicals. An irrigation quality assessment for rural Hyderabad was made by determining the pH, EC, TDS and TH beside major cations and anions. This study employed various parameters to determine the suitability of groundwater for irrigation and its hydrochemistry. Permissible limits of major cations and anions revealed that approximately 26% of samples exceeded acceptable levels for Electrical Conductivity (EC), 87% for Ca2+, 89% for Mg2+, and 60% for Na+, while none exceeded the limits for K+. Conversely, 47% of samples for HCO3−, 91% for Cl−, and 100% for SO42−, NO3−, and CO32− proved suitability for irrigation. Notably, irrigation indices highlighted favorable results, with 100% conformity for SAR, SSP, RSP, and PI values, and substantial percentages of 78% and 85% for MH and KR values, respectively, affirming their suitability for irrigation practices. Employing the USSL diagram, 22%, 65%, and 11% of samples fall into the C2S1, C3S1, and C4S1 categories. According to the Wilcox diagram, 25%, 43%, 30%, and 2% are classified under C1, C2, C3, and C4 categories, respectively. The Gibbs ratio shows a concentration within the evaporation dominance, and CAI values showed positive ion exchange. Overall, Hyderabad's rural areas are generally suitable for irrigation, apart from certain areas where water quality may not be acceptable for plants lacking high salt tolerance. To clarify the migration and accumulation of nitrogen (N), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K) in soil profiles of plastic-greenhouse vegetable fields with cultivation years, soil samples from the 0–7 m soil profiles were collected from 10 pepper greenhouses with 10 and 20 years planting history, and parallel soil samples were taken from adjacent wheat-maize fields as controls. The results showed that: (1) Compared with wheat-maize fields, the total N amount in the 0–7 m soil layers from the greenhouses increased by 6.19 ± 1.16 and 9.11 ± 3.43 t ha−1 at 10 and 20 years, respectively, accounting for about 30.4% and 17.5% of the N input. (2) The N amount that entered the environment outside the 0–7 m soil layers were 6.95 t ± 2.76 and 29.10 ± 10.14 t ha−1 after 10 and 20 years of continuous planting, accounting for approximately 34.2% and 55.9% of the N input, respectively. (3) The concentration of water-soluble Ca and Mg in the 0–7 m soil layers increased significantly with cultivation years, and correlated positively with mineral N concentration. (4) Moreover, K mainly accumulates in the form of non-exchangeable K in the surface layers (0–50 cm). Our results demonstrated that huge amounts of N migrate to the deep soil with the extension of cultivation years in plastic-greenhouse pepper production systems, accompanied by significant leaching of Ca and Mg, while K mainly accumulates in the surface layers. A new sol-gel method that employs cation exchange from an aqueous metal ion solution with H+ ions of granulated alginic acid was developed for synthesizing high-purity Y2O3 nanoparticles. In this study, the cation exchange kinetics of H+~Y3+ in aqueous solution were analyzed using on-line pH technology and off-line inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) analysis. Pseudo 2nd-order models were utilized to evaluate the parameters of the kinetics, suggesting that the concentration of H+~Y3+ involved in the cation exchange reaction was 1:1.733. Further, a comprehensive understanding of the Y-ALG calcination process was developed using thermo-gravimetric analysis, along with results obtained from differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC). A detailed analysis of the XRD Rietveld refinement plots revealed that the crystallite sizes of Y2O3 nanoparticles were about 4 nm (500 °C) and 15 nm (800 °C), respectively. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was employed to investigate the electrochemical oxidation of catechol. The oxidation peak currents of catechol at Y2O3 (500 °C)/GCE and Y2O3 (800 °C)/GCE showed two stages linear function of concentration (2.0~20.0 × 10−6 mol/L, 20.0~60.0 × 10−6 mol/L). The results indicated that the detection limits were equal to 2.4 × 10−7 mol/L (Y2O3 (500 °C)/GCE) and 7.8 × 10−7 mol/L (Y2O3 (800 °C)/GCE). In the filamentous ascomycete Aspergillus nidulans, at least three high hierarchy transcription factors are required for growth at extracellular alkaline pH: SltA, PacC and CrzA. Transcriptomic profiles depending on alkaline pH and SltA function showed that pacC expression might be under SltA regulation. Additional transcriptional studies of PacC and the only pH-regulated pal gene, palF, confirmed both the strong dependence on ambient pH and the function of SltA. The regulation of pacC expression is dependent on the activity of the zinc binuclear (C6) cluster transcription factor PacX. However, we found that the ablation of sltA in the pacX− mutant background specifically prevents the increase in pacC expression levels without affecting PacC protein levels, showing a novel specific function of the PacX factor. The loss of sltA function causes the anomalous proteolytic processing of PacC and a reduction in the post-translational modifications of PalF. At alkaline pH, in a null sltA background, PacC72kDa accumulates, detection of the intermediate PacC53kDa form is extremely low and the final processed form of 27 kDa shows altered electrophoretic mobility. Constitutive ubiquitination of PalF or the presence of alkalinity-mimicking mutations in pacC, such as pacCc14 and pacCc700, resembling PacC53kDa and PacC27kDa, respectively, allowed the normal processing of PacC but did not rescue the alkaline pH-sensitive phenotype caused by the null sltA allele. Overall, data show that Slt and PacC/Pal pathways are interconnected, but the transcription factor SltA is on a higher hierarchical level than PacC on regulating the tolerance to the ambient alkalinity in A. nidulans. The 1,4-benzodiazepine structural framework is a fascinating element commonly found in biologically active and pharmaceutically relevant compounds. A highly efficient method for synthesizing 1,4-benzodiazepin-3-ones is described, involving a [4+3]-cycloaddition reaction between 2-amino-β-nitrostyrenes and α-bromohydroxamate, with Cs2CO3 used as a base. This process yielded the desired 1,4-benzodiazepines in good yields. Furthermore, an organocatalytic asymmetric [4+3]-cycloaddition was successfully accomplished using a bifunctional squaramide-based catalyst. This approach enabled the enantioselective synthesis of chiral 1,4-benzodiazepines with commendable yields and moderate enantioselectivities, reaching up to 80% yield and 72% ee. (1) Background: Previous research has demonstrated that the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soil and the balance of exchangeable cations Ca, Mg, and K are key factors affecting plant growth and development. We hypothesized that balancing exchangeable cations based on increased CEC would improve plant growth and development. (2) Methods: This study conducted a two-phase experiment to evaluate methods for increasing soil CEC and the effects of increasing CEC and balancing Ca, Mg, and K on plant growth. Therefore, we first conducted a soil culture experiment using organic fertilizer, montmorillonite, and humic acid to investigate fertilizers that can effectively increase CEC in the short term. Then, a tomato seedling pot experiment was conducted using the control (CK) and OMHA fertilizer-treated soils collected from soil culture experiments. The CK and OMHA treatment soils were constructed with balanced exchangeable cations and an unbalanced control, respectively. (3) Results: The soil culture experiments revealed that the combination of organic fertilizer, montmorillonite, and humic acid (OMHA treatment) had the most significant effect on increasing CEC. The CEC of the OMHA treatment increased by 41.07%, reaching 27.10 cmol·kg−1. The tomato pot experiments demonstrated that balancing the exchangeable cations in OMHA soil improved the Mg and K nutrition of tomato seedlings and significantly increased SPAD, leaf nitrogen content, and dry weight, while balancing the exchangeable cations in CK soil improved only the K nutrition of tomato seedlings. (4) Conclusions: Overall, balancing exchangeable cations based on increasing CEC can improve soil nutrient availability and alleviate the competition effects of Ca, Mg, and K cations. Early Mars was likely habitable, but could life actually have started there? While cellular life emerged from prebiotic chemistry through a pre-Darwinian selection process relevant to both Earth and Mars, each planet posed unique selection 'hurdles' to this process. We focus on drivers of selection in prebiotic chemistry generic to Earth-like worlds and specific to Mars, such as an iron-rich surface. Iron, calcium, and magnesium cations are abundant in hydrothermal settings on Earth and Mars, a promising environment for an origin of life. We investigated the impact of cations on the stability and disruption of different primitive cell membranes under different pH conditions. The relative destabilizing effect of cations on membranes observed in this study is Ca2+ > Fe2+ > Mg2+. Cation concentrations in Earth systems today are too low to disrupt primitive membranes, but on Mars concentrations could have been elevated enough to disrupt membranes during surface dehydration. Membranes and RNA interact during dehydration–rehydration cycles to mutually stabilize each other in cation-rich solutions, and optimal membrane composition can be 'selected' by environmental factors such as pH and cation concentrations. Bicarbonate ions (HCO3−) are abundant in karst water with poor lead (Pb) utilization and biodegradation. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of HCO3− on the Pb removal efficiency and uptake ability of Pontederia crassipes (a widespread hydrophyte in the karst area) from karst water. The Pb concentration, Pontederia crassipes morphology, and functional group were detected. As the HCO3− molarity in karst water increased (3, 4, and 5 mmol/L), the removal of Pb increased (85.31%, 93.28%, and 95.16%), whereas the bioconcentration amount of Pb decreased (573, 501, and 301 mg/kg), mainly due to the insoluble PbCO3 and Pb (OH)2. The Pb bioconcentration factor was the highest (15,564) at 4 mmol/L HCO3− due to the maximum strength of cation exchange and cell wall protein C=O. High HCO3− molarities changed the variety of positive ions of cation exchange (HCO3− ≤ 4 mmol/L: Na, K, and Mg; HCO3− > 4 mmol/L: Mg and K), and relieved the breaking of roots, stomatal closure, and vascular system shrinking. Moreover, high HCO3− molarities diminished the C≡C oxidation, enlarged the displacement of SO42− and C-O, and stimulated the methyl transfer reaction and the bonding between -CH3 and Pb. Wendan (a type of pomelo), a popular fruit in China, is less known in other countries. Its peel is widely used in food and traditional medicine. Four different origins (Xuzhou, Taizhou, Zhangzhou, and Meizhou) of Wendan pomelo were selected, and crude extracts were obtained by the Soxhlet extraction method. The composition of Wendan peel was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) in positive ion mode. The compounds were identified by searching the Metabolite Link (METLIN), the Spectral Database for Organic Compounds (SDBS), and by referring to literature reports. A total of 20 compounds were identified among the samples from the four origins, of which 8 compounds were common. The majority of the compounds belonged to the flavonoid and coumarin classes; Meranzin hydrate was identified for the first time in pomelo peel. In vitro antioxidant activity experiments showed that samples from Taizhou, Zhejiang, exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, with values of 0.59 mg/mL, 97.06 μmol TE/g, and 60.62 μmol Fe2+/g, respectively. Samples from Zhangzhou, Fujian, showed antioxidant activity second only to the samples from Taizhou, Zhejiang. Black ginseng (BG) is processed ginseng traditionally made in Korea via the steaming and drying of ginseng root through three or more cycles, leading to changes in its appearance due to the Maillard reaction on its surface, resulting in a dark coloration. In this study, we explored markers for differentiating processed ginseng by analyzing the chemical characteristics of BG. We elucidated a new method for the structural identification of ginsenoside metabolites and described the features of processed ginseng using UPLC-QTOF-MS in the positive ion mode. We confirmed that maltose, glucose, and fructose, along with L-arginine, L-histidine, and L-lysine, were the key compounds responsible for the changes in the external quality of BG. These compounds can serve as important metabolic markers for distinguishing BG from conventionally processed ginseng. The major characteristics of white ginseng, red ginseng, and BG can be distinguished based on their high-polarity and low-polarity ginsenosides, and a precise method for the structural elucidation of ginsenosides in the positive ion mode is presented. These last few decades, membranes and monoliths have been increasingly used as stationary phases for chromatography. Their fast mass transfer is mainly based on convection, which leads to reduced diffusion, which is usually observed in resins. Nevertheless, poor flow distribution, which causes inefficient binding, remains a major challenge for the development of both membrane and monolith devices. Moreover, the comparison of membranes and monoliths for biomolecule separation has been very poorly investigated. In this paper, the separation of two proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lactoferrin (LF), with similar sizes, but different isoelectric points, was investigated at a pH of 6.0 with a BSA-LF concentration ratio of 2/1 (2.00 mg⋅mL-1 and 1.00 mg⋅mL-1 LF solution) using strong cation exchange membranes and monoliths packed in the same housing, as well as commercialized devices. The feeding flow rate was operated at 12.0 bed volume (BV)/min for all devices. Afterward, bound LF was eluted using a phosphate-buffered saline solution with 2.00 M NaCl. Using membranes in a CIM housing from BIA Separations (Slovenia) with porous frits before and after the membrane bed, higher binding capacities, sharper breakthrough curves, as well as sharper and more symmetric elution peaks were obtained. Extra peaks have constantly been observed in the X-ray diffraction measurement for the CH3NH3PbI3 film. Such mysteries have now been uncovered in this paper, in which powder X-ray diffraction, in situ X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy measurements were conducted, and these peaks were attributed to the ethylammonium lead iodide (CH3CH2NH3PbI3/EAPbI3). It was found that the formation of EAPbI3 was triggered by the breakdown of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), which was adopted as the solvent in the preparation of the precursor solutions. EAPbI3 was generated by the organic cation exchange reaction in the subsequent annealing process. This study develops alkali-activated mine tailing (MT)-based binders containing MT as the major source material and slag (S) as a minor additive, using alkaline activators containing sodium or potassium as the cationic species. The influence of the cationic species (Na or K), slag content, alkalinity (expressed using the activator silica modulus, Ms), and alkali oxide-to-powder ratio, n, on the setting behavior, paste rheology, early-age reaction kinetics, and compressive strength development are discussed. The effects of using solid activators are also considered. Changes in Ms values have a stronger impact on setting times compared to n values, underscoring the significant role of silicate species from the activator in the initial reaction mechanisms. The type of cation and physical state of the activator (in the case of K–Si-activated systems) are found to determine the dissolution rate and mobility of ionic species in the system, resulting in significant differences in the early age reaction mechanisms (e.g., K-based activators show >2× enhancement in early heat release as compared to Na-based activators) of the alkali-activated binders prepared using the same activator parameters. The difference in the viscosities of the activator solutions strongly influences the rheological characteristics of the activated systems. MT-based binders with 28-day compressive strengths ranging from 10 to 35 MPa, which are suitable for several structural/non-structural applications, are attained. The strong dependence of the compressive strength development on the alkali activation parameters and slag content in the system presents an opportunity to develop sustainable binders, with MT as their major constituent, to provide twin benefits of recycling MT wastes and mitigating the environmental impacts associated with traditional ordinary Portland cement-based binder systems. Food and drinks can be contaminated with pollutants such as lead and strontium, which poses a serious danger to human health. For this reason, a number of effective sensors have been developed for the rapid and highly selective detection of such contaminants. TBA, a well-known aptamer developed to selectively target and thereby inhibit the protein of clinical interest α-thrombin, is receiving increasing attention for sensing applications, particularly for the sensing of different cations. Indeed, TBA, in the presence of these cations, folds into the stable G-quadruplex structure. Furthermore, different cations produce small but significant changes in this structure that result in changes in the electrical responses that TBA can produce. In this article, we give an overview of the expected data regarding the use of TBA in the detection of lead and strontium, calculating the expected electrical response using different measurement techniques. Current research is moving towards iron and ammonia elimination from groundwater. Here, we are using a poly acrylic–poly acrylamide hydrogel that is grafted with 3-chloroaniline. This copolymer was synthesized by addition polymerization technique. The effects of agitation time, dosage and adsorbent temperature on the removal process sensitivity were investigated. The copolymer was described experientially and theoretically. Isothermal kinetic adsorption models are discussed. This hydrogel could be regenerated efficiently (98.3% removal of iron and 100% removal of ammonia). The density functional theory (DFT) method, using B3LYP/6-311G(d,p), and the LANL2DZ level of the theory were managed to investigate the stationary states of the grafted copolymer and the complexation energy of the hydrogel with the studied cations. DFT has been used to investigate the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) properties to locate the most negative centers on the hydrogel. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound found in the Cannabis plant that is known for its potential therapeutic effects. However, its impact on membrane ionic currents remains a topic of debate. This study aimed to investigate how CBD modifies various types of ionic currents in pituitary GH3 cells. Results showed that exposure to CBD led to a concentration-dependent decrease in M-type K+ currents (IK(M)), with an IC50 of 3.6 μM, and caused the quasi-steady-state activation curve of the current to shift to a more depolarized potential with no changes in the curve's steepness. The CBD-mediated block of IK(M) was not reversed by naloxone, suggesting that it was not mediated by opioid receptors. The IK(M) elicited by pulse-train stimulation was also decreased upon exposure to CBD. The magnitude of erg-mediated K+ currents was slightly reduced by adding CBD (10 μM), while the density of voltage-gated Na+ currents elicited by a short depolarizing pulse was not affected by it. Additionally, CBD decreased the magnitude of hyperpolarization-activated cation currents (Ih) with an IC50 of 3.3 μM, and the decrease was reversed by oxaliplatin. The quasi-steady-state activation curve of Ih was shifted in the leftward direction with no changes in the slope factor of the curve. CBD also diminished the strength of voltage-dependent hysteresis on Ih elicited by upright isosceles-triangular ramp voltage. Collectively, these findings suggest that CBD's modification of ionic currents presented herein is independent of cannabinoid or opioid receptors and may exert a significant impact on the functional activities of excitable cells occurring in vitro or in vivo. In this work, sulfonated pentablock copolymer (s-PBC) and s-PBC mixed with graphene oxide (s-PBC_GO) layers were deposited on polypropylene (PP) fibrous filters and tested as active coatings for the removal of cobalt ions from water using adsorption and filtration processes. Some of the coated filters were treated by UV light irradiation to modify their hydrophilic properties. The filters were characterized, before and after the processes, by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The Qt (mg/g) values, defined as the weight ratio between the removed ions and the coating layer, were evaluated. In the case of adsorption processes, the best results for the removal of Co2+ ions were achieved by the s-PBC_GO coating, with a Qt of 37 mg/g compared to 21 mg/g obtained by the s-PBC. This was ascribed to the presence of GO, which contains more favorable sites able to adsorb positive ions from the solution. Vice versa, for filtration processes, the s-PBC coated filters show similar or slightly better results than the s-PBC_GO coated ones. Such differences can be ascribed to the shorter contact time between the solution and the coating layer in the case of filtration, with respect to adsorption processes, thus reducing the chance for the ions to be adsorbed on the GO layers before passing through the filter. A collateral effect, observed in this study and enhanced in the case of UV-treated coatings, is the release of radical oxysulfur species. The mechanisms involved in this effect are discussed and identified as a consequence of the interaction between the coating layers and metal ions. In order to identify the mechanism of oxysulfur radicals formation and considering a water sample closer to real water, the Co2+ ions adsorption experiments were conducted in the presence of a competitive organic contaminant (i.e., methyl orange, MO). Tyrosinase is a key enzyme in melanin synthesis and widely distributed in plants and animals tissues. In mammals, this enzyme is related to pigment production, involved in wound healing, primary immune response and it can also contribute to catecholamines synthesis in the brain. Consequently, tyrosinase enzyme represents an attractive and selective target in the field of the medicine, cosmetics and bio-insecticides. In this paper, experimental kinetics and computational analysis were used to study the inhibition of tyrosinase by analogs of Kojic acid. The main interactions occurring between inhibitors-tyrosinase complexes and the influence of divalent cation (Cu2+) in enzymatic inhibition were investigated by using molecular docking, molecular dynamic simulations and electrostatic binding free energy by using the Linear Interaction Energy (LIE) method. The results showed that the electrostatic binding free energy are correlated with values of constant inhibition (r² = 0.97).Thus, the model obtained here could contribute to future studies of this important system and, therefore, eventually facilitate development of tyrosinase inhibitors. In this paper, atmospheric water-soluble cation and anion contents of PM10 are analysed in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. PM10 samples were collected at five sites for a whole year. PM10 concentrations (µg/m3) ranged from 82.11 to 739.61 at Aziziyah, 65.37 to 421.71 at Sanaiyah, 25.20 to 466.60 at Misfalah, 52.56 to 507.23 at Abdeyah, and 40.91 to 471.99 at Askan. Both daily and annual averaged PM10 concentrations exceeded WHO and Saudi Arabia national air quality limits. Daily averaged PM10 concentration exceeded the national air quality limits of 340 µg/m3, 32% of the time at Aziziyah, 8% of the time at Sanaiyah, and 6% of the time at the other three sites. On average, the cations and anions made a 37.81% contribution to the PM10 concentrations. SO42−, NO3−, Ca2+, Na+, and Cl− contributed 50.25%, 16.43%, 12.11%, 11.12%, and 8.70% to the total ion concentrations, respectively. The minor ions (F−, Br−, Mg2+, NO2−, and PO43−) contributed just over 1% to the ion mass. Four principal components explained 89% variations in PM10 concentrations. Four major emission sources were identified: (a) Road traffic, including emission from the exhaust, wear-and-tear, and the resuspension of dust particles (F−, SO42−, NO3−, Ca2+, Na+, Mg+, Br−, Cl−, NO2−, PO43−); (b) Mineral dust (Cl−, F−, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, PO43−); (c) Industries and construction–demolition work (F−, SO42−, Ca2+, Mg2+); and (d) Seaspray and marine aerosols (Cl−, Br−, Mg2+, Na+).
