We present the quantum-likemodel of information processing by the brain's neural networks. The model does not refer to genuine quantum processes in the brain. In this model, uncertainty generated by the action potential of a neuron is represented as quantum-like superposition of the basic mental states corresponding to a neural code. Neuron's state space is described as complex Hilbert space (quantum information representation). The brain's psychological functions perform self-measurements by extracting concrete answers to questions (solutions of problems) from quantum information states. This extraction is modeled in the framework of open quantum systems theory. In this way, it is possible to proceed without appealing to the state's collapse. Dynamics of the state of psychological function F is described by the quantum master equation. Its stationary states represent classical statistical mixtures of possible outputs of F (decisions). This model can be used for justification of quantum-like modeling cognition and decision-making. The latter is supported by plenty of statistical data collected in cognitive psychology. In the present paper, a Quality Systems Theory is presented. Certifiable Quality Systems are treated and interpreted in accordance with a Thermodynamics-based approach. Analysis is also conducted on the relationship between Quality Management Systems (QMSs) and systems theories. A measure of entropy is proposed for QMSs, including a virtual document entropy and an entropy linked to processes and organisation. QMSs are also interpreted in light of Cybernetics, and interrelations between Information Theory and quality are also highlighted. A measure for the information content of quality documents is proposed. Such parameters can be used as adequacy indices for QMSs. From the discussed approach, suggestions for organising QMSs are also derived. Further interpretive thermodynamic-based criteria for QMSs are also proposed. The work represents the first attempt to treat quality organisational systems according to a thermodynamics-related approach. At this stage, no data are available to compare statements in the paper. This paper presents the effects of spontaneous random activity on information transmission in an auditory brain stem neuron model. In computer simulations, the supra-threshold synaptic current stimuli ascending from auditory nerve fibers (ANFs) were modeled by a filtered inhomogeneous Poisson process modulated by sinusoidal functions at a frequency of 220-3520 Hz with regard to the human speech spectrum. The stochastic sodium and stochastic high- and low-threshold potassium channels were incorporated into a single compartment model of the soma in spherical bushy neurons, so as to realize threshold fluctuations or a variation of spike firing times. The results show that the information rates estimated from the entropy of inter-spike intervals of spike trains tend toward a convex function of the spontaneous rates when the intensity of sinusoidal functions decreases. Furthermore, the results show that a convex function of the spontaneous rates tends to disappear as the frequency of the sinusoidal function increases, such that the phase-locked response can be unobserved. It is concluded that this sort of stochastic resonance (SR) phenomenon, which depends on the spontaneous rates with supra-threshold stimuli, can better enhance information transmission in a smaller intensity of sinusoidal functions within the human speech spectrum, like the situation in which the regular SR can enhance weak signals. The time-inhomogeneous Feller-type diffusion process, having infinitesimal drift α (t) x + β (t) and infinitesimal variance 2 r (t) x , with a zero-flux condition in the zero-state, is considered. This process is obtained as a continuous approximation of a birth-death process with immigration. The transition probability density function and the related conditional moments, with their asymptotic behaviors, are determined. Special attention is paid to the cases in which the intensity functions α (t) , β (t) , r (t) exhibit some kind of periodicity due to seasonal immigration, regular environmental cycles or random fluctuations. We consider the problem of the first passage time T of an inhomogeneous geometric Brownian motion through a constant threshold, for which only limited results are available in the literature. In the case of a strong positive drift, we get an approximation of the cumulants of T of any order using the algebra of formal power series applied to an asymptotic expansion of its Laplace transform. The interest in the cumulants is due to their connection with moments and the accounting of some statistical properties of the density of T like skewness and kurtosis. Some case studies coming from neuronal modeling with reversal potential and mean reversion models of financial markets show the goodness of the approximation of the first moment of T. General methods to simulate probability density functions and first passage time densities are provided for time-inhomogeneous stochastic diffusion processes obtained via a composition of two Gauss–Markov processes conditioned on the same initial state. Many diffusion processes with time-dependent infinitesimal drift and infinitesimal variance are included in the considered class. For these processes, the transition probability density function is explicitly determined. Moreover, simulation procedures are applied to the diffusion processes obtained starting from Wiener and Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes. We consider a time-non-homogeneous double-ended queue subject to catastrophes and repairs. The catastrophes occur according to a non-homogeneous Poisson process and lead the system into a state of failure. Instantaneously, the system is put under repair, such that repair time is governed by a time-varying intensity function. We analyze the transient and the asymptotic behavior of the queueing system. Moreover, we derive a heavy-traffic approximation that allows approximating the state of the systems by a time-non-homogeneous Wiener process subject to jumps to a spurious state (due to catastrophes) and random returns to the zero state (due to repairs). Special attention is devoted to the case of periodic catastrophe and repair intensity functions. The first-passage-time problem through constant levels is also treated both for the queueing model and the approximating diffusion process. In this paper, we consider a stochastic diffusion process able to model the interest rate evolving with respect to time and propose a first passage time (FPT) approach through a boundary, defined as the “alert threshold”, in order to evaluate the risk of a proposed loan. Above this alert threshold, the rate is considered at the risk of usury, so new monetary policies have been adopted. Moreover, the mean FPT can be used as an indicator of the “goodness” of a loan; i.e., when an applicant is to choose between two loan offers, s/he will choose the one with a higher mean exit time from the alert boundary. An application to real data is considered by analyzing the Italian average effect global rate by means of two widely used models in finance, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (Vasicek) and Feller (Cox-Ingersoll-Ross) models.
