Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) has grown rapidly in China since its introduction in 1979, showing the trend of alien species invasion, which has seriously affected the ecosystem balance of coastal wetlands. The temporal and spatial expansion law of S. alterniflora can be obtained through remote sensing monitoring, which can provide a reference and basis for S. alterniflora management. This paper presents a method for extracting and mapping S. alterniflora based on phenological characteristics. The coastal areas of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration are selected as the research area, and the Landsat time series data from 1990 to 2022 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform are used to support the experiment in this paper. Firstly, the possible growing area of S. alterniflora was extracted using the normalized differential moisture index (NDMI), normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), and normalized differential water index (NDWI); Then, the time series curve characterizing the phenological characteristics of vegetation was constructed using the vegetation index to determine the difference phase of phenological characteristics between S. alterniflora and other vegetation. Finally, a decision tree was constructed based on the phenological feature difference phase data to extract S. alterniflora, and it is applied to the analysis of temporal and spatial changes of S. alterniflora in the study area from 1990 to 2022. The results show that the area of S. alterniflora increased from ~1426 ha in 1990 to ~44,508 ha in 2022. However, the area of S. alterniflora began to show negative growth in 2015 due to the construction of nature reserves and ecological management. The results of correlation analysis showed that the growth of C. japonicum was significantly affected by temperature stress and weakly affected by precipitation. This study verified that Landsat time series images can effectively extract vegetation phenological information, which has strong feasibility for extraction and dynamic monitoring of S. alterniflora and provides technical support for the management and monitoring of invasive plants in coastal wetlands. The evaluation of satellite soil moisture is a big challenge owing to the large spatial mismatch between pixel-based satellite soil moisture products and point-based in situ measurements. Upscaling in situ measurements to obtain the "true value" of soil moisture content at the satellite grid/footprint scale can make up for the scale difference and improve the validation. Many existing upscaling methods have strict requirements regarding the spatial distribution and quantity of soil moisture sensors. However, in reality, soil-moisture-monitoring networks are commonly sparse with low sensor density, which increases the difficulty of obtaining accurate upscaled soil moisture data and limits the validation of satellite products. For this reason, this paper proposes a scheme to upscale in situ measurements using five machine learning methods along with Landsat 8 datasets and DEM data to validate the accuracy of a SMAP-enhanced passive soil moisture product for a sparse network on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The proposed scheme realizes the upscaling of in situ soil moisture data to the pixel scale (30 m × 30 m) and then to the coarse grid scale (9 km × 9 km) by using multi-source remote sensing data as the bridge of scale conversion. The long-time SMAP SM products since April 2015 on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau were validated based on upscaled soil moisture data. The results show that (1) random forest regression performs the best, and the upscaled soil moisture data reflect the region-average soil moisture conditions that can be used for evaluating SMAP data; (2) the SMAP product meets its scientific measurement requirements; and (3) the SMAP product generally underestimates the soil moisture in the study area. Forest stock volume is the main factor to evaluate forest carbon sink level. At present, the combination of multi-source remote sensing and non-parametric models has been widely used in FSV estimation. However, the biodiversity of natural forests is complex, and the response of the spatial information of remote sensing images to FSV is significantly reduced, which seriously affects the accuracy of FSV estimation. To address this challenge, this paper takes China's Baishanzu Forest Park with representative characteristics of natural forests as the research object, integrates the forest survey data, SRTM data, and Landsat 8 images of Baishanzu Forest Park, constructs a time series dataset based on survey time, and establishes an FSV estimation model based on the CNN-LSTM-Attention algorithm. The model uses the convolutional neural network to extract the spatial features of remote sensing images, uses the LSTM to capture the time-varying characteristics of FSV, captures the feature variables with a high response to FSV through the attention mechanism, and finally completes the prediction of FSV. The experimental results show that some features (e.g., texture, elevation, etc.) of the dataset based on multi-source data feature variables are more effective in FSV estimation than spectral features. The rapid and precise acquisition of the agricultural plastic greenhouse (PG) spatial distribution is essential in understanding PG usage and degradation, ensuring agricultural production, and protecting the ecological environment and human health. It is of great practical significance to realize the effective utilization of remote sensing images in the agricultural field and improve the extraction accuracy of PG remote sensing data. In this study, Landsat operational land imager (OLI) remote sensing images were used as data sources, and Shandong Province, which has the largest PG distribution in China, was selected as the study area. PGs in the study area were identified by means of contour recognition, feature set construction of the spatial structure, and machine learning. The results were as follows. (1) Through an optimal segmentation parameter approach, it was determined that the optimal segmentation scale for size, shape, and compactness should be set at 20, 0.8, and 0.5, respectively, which significantly improved PG contour recognition. (2) Among the 72 feature variables for PG spatial recognition, the number of features and classification accuracy showed a trend of first gradually increasing and then decreasing. Among them, fifteen feature variables, including the mean of bands 2 and 5; six index features (NDWI, GNDVI, SWIR1_NIR, NDVI, and PMLI); two shape features, the density and shape index; and two texture features, the contrast and standard deviation, played an important role. (3) According to the recall rate, accuracy rate, and F-value of three machine learning methods, random forest (RDF), CART decision tree (CART), and support vector machine (SVM), SVM had the best classification effect. The classification method described in this paper can accurately extract continuous plastic greenhouses through remote sensing images and provide a reference for the application of facility agriculture and non-point-source pollution control. Mangroves are a key type of protected coastal wetland, with a range of benefits such as protection from wave damage, sand fixation, water purification and ecological tourism. As the academic knowledge of mangroves has gradually increased, the use of remote sensing to monitor their dynamic changes in China has become a hot topic of discussion and has received attention in academic circles. Remote sensing has also provided necessary auxiliary decision-making suggestions and data support for the scientific and rational conservation, restoration and management of mangrove resources. In this paper, we used Landsat satellite series data combined with the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and adaptive threshold partitioning (OTSU method) to monitor mangrove dynamics in coastal China from 1986 to 2021 based on Google Earth Engine (GEE), with three main results. (1) Based on the massive data and efficient computational capability of the GEE platform, we achieved large-scale interannual mangrove distribution extraction. The overall classification accuracy for 2019 exceeded 0.93, and the mangrove distribution extraction effect was good. (2) The total mangrove area and the mean patch size in China showed overall increasing trends, and Guangdong and Guangxi were the top two provinces in China in terms of the largest mangrove area. (3) Except for Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve, the mangrove areas in other national mangrove reserves mainly showed increasing trends, confirming the effectiveness of the reserves. Data on the spatial structure and area trends of mangroves in China can provide scientific references for mangrove conservation and development, and serve in the further restoration of mangrove ecosystems. Models for bathymetry retrieval from multispectral images have not considered the errors caused by tidal fluctuation. A rigorous bathymetric model that considers the variation in tide height time series, including the tide height calculation and instantaneous tide height correction at the epoch of satellite flight into the bathymetric retrieval model, is proposed in this paper. The model was applied on Weizhou Island, located in Guangxi Province, China, and its accuracy verificated with four check lines and seven checkpoints. A scene from the Landsat 8 satellite image was used as experimental data. The reference ("true") water depth data collected by a RESON SeaBat 7125 multibeam instrument was used for comparison analysis. When satellite-derived bathymetry is compared, it is found that maximum absolute error, mean absolute error, and RMSE have decreased 54, 45, and 30% relative to that of the traditional model in the entire test field. The accuracy of the water depths retrieved by our model increased 30 and 56% when validated using four check lines and seven checkpoints, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the model proposed in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy of bathymetry retrieved from Landsat 8 images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analysis of the spatial and temporal variation patterns of surface evapotranspiration is important for understanding global climate change, promoting scientific deployment of regional water resources, and improving crop yield and water productivity. Based on Landsat 8 OIL_TIRS data and remote sensing image data of the lower Yangtze River urban cluster for the same period of 2016–2021, combined with soil and meteorological data of the study area, this paper constructed a multiple linear regression (MLR) model and an extreme learning machine (ELM) inversion model with evapotranspiration as the target and, based on the model inversion, quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed the spatial and temporal variability in surface evapotranspiration in the study area in the past six years. The results show that both models based on feature factors and spectral indices obtained a good inversion accuracy, with the fusion of feature factors effectively improving the inversion ability of the model for ET. The best model for ET in 2016, 2017, and 2021 was MLR, with an R2 greater than 0.8; the best model for ET in 2018–2019 was ELM, with an R2 of 0.83 and 0.62, respectively. The inter-annual ET in the study area showed a "double-peak" dynamic variation, with peaks in 2018 and 2020; the intra-annual ET showed a single-peak cycle, with peaks in July–August. Seasonal differences were obvious, and spatially high-ET areas were mainly found in rural areas north of the Yangtze River and central and western China where agricultural land is concentrated. The net solar radiation, soil heat flux, soil temperature and humidity, and fractional vegetation cover all had significant positive effects on ET, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.39 to 0.94. As a particular type of alpine glacier, debris-covered glaciers are essential for local water resources and glacial disaster warnings. The Eastern Tomur Peak Region (EPTR) is the most concentrated glacier in Tien Shan Mountain, China, where the glaciers have not been studied in detail. This paper evaluates the delineation accuracy of Landsat8 OLI, Sentinel-1A, and GF images for debris-covered glaciers in the EPTR. Each image uses the most advanced delineation method for itself to minimize the error of inherent resolutions. The results show that the accuracy of these images for delineating debris-covered glaciers is very high, and the F1 scores are expressed as 96.73%, 93.55%, and 95.81%, respectively. Therefore, Landsat images were selected to analyze the area change of EPTR from 2000 to 2022 over a 5-year time scale. The results indicate that glaciers of the EPTR decreased by 19.05 km2 from 2000 to 2020, accounting for 1.9% (0.08% a−1), and debris increased by 10.8%, which validates the opinion that the presence of debris inhibits glacier melting. The most varied time was 2010–2022, but it was much less than other Tien Shan regions. The lower glacier ablation rate in this area results from the combined effect of decreased bare ice and increased debris. As a direct indicator of vegetation photosynthesis, the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) serves as a critical input in a series of land surface models. While existing satellite FPAR products are generally at coarse resolutions ranging from 250 m to 1 km, operational FPAR products at fine resolution are urgently needed in studying land surface processes at the plot scale. However, existing methods for estimating fine-resolution FPAR were mainly designed for Landsat data, and few studies have attempted to develop algorithms for Sentinel-2 data. In particular, the operational estimation of decameter FPAR has a higher requirement for the algorithms in terms of generalizability, efficiency, accuracy, and adaptability to Sentinel-2 data. In this paper, we developed a retrieval chain on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to estimate FPAR by learning the relationship between MODIS FPAR and Sentinel-2 surface reflectance. Scale-consistent multilinear models were used to model the relationship between MODIS FPAR and Sentinel-2 surface reflectance, and the model coefficients were regressed from the selected training samples. To account for the spectral and spatial characteristics of the Sentinel-2 data, we designed criteria for selecting training samples and compared different band combinations. Three strategies for band combination were used: (1) green, red, and near infrared (NIR) bands at 10 m resolution (i.e., three bands); (2) green, red, NIR, and red edge (RE) 1, RE2, and RE3 bands at 20 m resolution (i.e., five bands); and (3) green, red, NIR, RE1, RE2, RE3, shortwave infrared1 (SWIR1) and SWIR2 bands at 20 m resolution (i.e., eight bands). Meanwhile, the official Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) method has also been implemented to estimate the Sentinel FPAR at 10 m and 20 m resolutions for comparison. Both methods were applied to the western Guanzhong area, Shaanxi Province, China, for FPAR estimation of all cloud-free Sentinel-2 images in 2021. The results show that the scaling-based method using five bands at 20 m resolution was the most accurate compared to the in situ measurements (RMSE = 0.076 and R² = 0.626), which outperformed the SNAP method at 10 m and 20 m resolutions and the scaling-based method using other strategies. The results of the scaling-based method using all three strategies were highly consistent with the MODIS FPAR product, while the SNAP method systematically underestimated FPAR values compared to the MODIS FPAR products. The proposed method is more ready-to-use and more efficient than SNAP software. Monitoring of river discharge is a key process for water resources management, soil and water conservation, climate change, water cycling, flood or drought warning, agriculture and transportation, especially for the sustainable development of rivers and their surrounding ecological environment. Continuous and comprehensive discharge monitoring was usually impossible before, due to sparse gauges and gauge deactivation. Satellite remote sensing provides an advanced approach for estimating and monitoring river discharge at regional or even global scales. River morphology is generally considered to be a direct factor that affects the accuracy of remote sensing estimation, but the specific indicators and the extent to which it affects the estimation accuracy have not yet been explored, especially for medium to small rivers (width < 100 m). In this paper, six sites with hydrological gauges in the upper Heihe River Basin (HRB) of northwestern China and the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) of southeastern Australia were selected as the study cases. River discharge was estimated from Landsat imagery using the C/M method accordingly. River gradient, sinuosity, and width were obtained from Digital Elevation Model data for each site. Global Surface Water Dataset (GSWD) was also employed for indicating the dynamic status of river morphology. A series of methods were applied to analyze the influence of river morphology on estimation accuracy qualitatively and quantitatively, based on which we established inference about the theory of selecting satellite virtual gauges (SVGs). The results confirm the feasibility of the C/M method for discharge estimation, with the accuracy affected by multiple river morphological indicators. Among them, river width was found to be the most significant one. Moreover, water occurrence and water extent extracted from GSWD also have impact on the discharge estimation accuracy. Another independent river section in MDB was set as an example to demonstrate the reasonability of the established theory. In this paper, we selected Xilingol League in Inner Mongolia, China, as the research area, based on the land-use data of five Landsat remote sensing images taken between 1980 and 2015. Then, we calculated the complex network eigenvalues, such as the average shortest path, betweenness centrality, and degree, to identify the key land-use types, stability, and ecological environment change regularity from the perspective of the land-use system. Finally, we used the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) method to explore the main driving forces behind changes in the land-use system, to provide scientific support for the study of changing trends in land-use, and regional grassland ecological management. The findings are shown below. First, in the last 35 years, grasslands have always been the major type of change in land-use transfer matrices. Grasslands play a controlling role in the whole land-use system. Second, grassland and cultivated land are the major "transfer out" type of land in the Xilingol area, while construction land and water area belong to the major "transfer in" type of land. Third, the average shortest path values of four transition matrix networks were all less than 1.5, indicating that the land-use system becomes less stable, but the average shortest path values of these four networks present an increasing trend, leading to a more stable development of the land-use system. However, on the whole, it shows an upward trend, and the land-use system is moving in a stable direction. Fourth, the average annual rainfall, population, topographic factors, GDP, and distance from settlements play a prominent role in determining the spatial distribution of change in land-use in Xilingol. Due to the country's rapid economic growth, the problem of air pollution in China is becoming increasingly serious. In order to achieve a win-win situation for the environment and urban development, the government has issued many policies to strengthen environmental protection. PM2.5 is the primary particulate matter in air pollution, so an accurate estimation of PM2.5 distribution is of great significance. Although previous studies have attempted to retrieve PM2.5 using geostatistical or aerosol remote sensing retrieval methods, the current rough resolution and accuracy remain as limitations of such methods. This paper proposes a fine-grained spatiotemporal PM2.5 retrieval method that comprehensively considers various datasets, such as Landsat 8 satellite images, ground monitoring station data, and socio-economic data, to explore the applicability of different machine learning algorithms in PM2.5 retrieval. Six typical algorithms were used to train the multi-dimensional elements in a series of experiments. The characteristics of retrieval accuracy in different scenarios were clarified mainly according to the validation index, R2. The random forest algorithm was shown to have the best numerical and PM2.5-based air-quality-category accuracy, with a cross-validated R2 of 0.86 and a category retrieval accuracy of 0.83, while both maintained excellent retrieval accuracy and achieved a high spatiotemporal resolution. Based on this retrieval model, we evaluated the PM2.5 distribution characteristics and hourly variation in the sample area, as well as the functions of different input variables in the model. The PM2.5 retrieval method proposed in this paper provides a new model for fine-grained PM2.5 concentration estimation to determine the distribution laws of air pollutants and thereby specify more effective measures to realize the high-quality development of the city. Facing the challenge of the degradation of global water quality, it is urgent to realize the Sustainable Development Goal 6.3.2 (SDG 6.3.2), which focuses on improving global water quality. Currently, remote sensing technology is widely used for water quality monitoring. Existing water quality-monitoring studies have been conducted based on quantitative water quality inversion. It requires a high degree of the synchronization of the time and location of the collection of station monitoring data and remote sensing data (air–ground spatiotemporal synchronization), which can be resource intensive and time consuming. However, policymakers and the public are more interested in the quality of water (good or poor) than in the specific values of the water quality parameters, as evidenced by the emergence of SDG 6.3.2. In this study, we change the traditional idea of quantitative water quality research, focus on water quality qualitative research combined with the characteristics of water pollution, propose a remote sensing water quality sample enhancement method under the condition of "air–ground spatiotemporal asynchrony", and construct a remote sensing water quality sample library. On the basis of this sample library, a random forest water quality classification model was constructed to classify water quality qualitatively. We obtained the distribution of good water bodies in Deqing County, China, for example, from 2013 to 2022. The results show that the model has high accuracy (Kappa = 0.6004, OA = 0.8387), and we found that the water quality in Deqing County improved in the order of "major rivers, lakes, and tributaries" during the period from 2013 to 2015. This also verifies the feasibility of using this sample enhancement method to conduct qualitative research on water quality. Based on this water quality classification model, a set of spatial-type evaluation processes of SDG 6.3.2 based on image elements was designed. The evaluation results show that the water quality situation in Deqing County can be divided into two stages: there is a trend of substantial improvement from 2013 (evaluated value of SDG 6.3.2 = 63.25) to 2015 (evaluated value of SDG 6.3.2 = 83.16); and it has remained stable and fluctuating after reaching the good environmental water quality since 2015. This study proposes a simple method for rapidly evaluating SDG 6.3.2 via utilizing easily accessible Landsat 8 and water quality-monitoring data to classify water quality. The method can directly obtain water quality category information without the need for additional sampling, thus saving costs. It is a very simple process that is easy to implement, while also providing a high level of accuracy. This significantly reduces the barriers to evaluating SDG 6.3.2, supports the realization of the sustainable management of water resources globally, and is highly generalizable. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China and forms an essential component of the hydrological, nutrient, and carbon cycles, providing various ecosystem services to the local environment. Since changes in Poyang Lake's water temperature can significantly affect the surrounding environment and social development, continuous monitoring of lake temperature changes is required. Traditional water monitoring methods are resource intensive and cannot simultaneously conduct extensive water monitoring. Remote sensing of temperature inversion has the advantages of all-weather, efficient, and large-scale real-time monitoring. Six Landsat 8 images from August to October in 2020 and 2021 were utilized to extract lake surface temperature (LST), and the variations in LST over the two years were analyzed to determine the impact of global climate anomalies on inland lakes. The results indicate that the LST in August and October 2021 was significantly higher than that in the same periods of the previous year, and the temperature difference in October reached 8 °C. In contrast to the overall normal distribution pattern of the water temperature in 2020, 2021 exhibited a relatively concentrated, unimodal distribution pattern. A trend analysis of the driving factors suggests that the LST of Poyang Lake is influenced by the global climate, and the artificial heat sources around the lake clearly alter the distribution characteristics of the LST simultaneously. The massive increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), has had a significant impact on the global climate. Research has revealed that lakes play an important role in the global carbon cycle and that they can shift between the roles of carbon sources and sinks. This study used Landsat satellite images to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics and factors influencing the CO2 changes in Chagan Lake in China. We conducted six water sampling campaigns at Chagan Lake in 2020–2021 and determined the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) from 110 water samples. Landsat surface reflectance was matched with water sampling events within ±7 days of satellite overpasses, yielding 75 matched pairs. A regression analysis indicated strong associations between pCO2 and both the band difference model of the near-infrared band and green band (Band 5-Band 3, R2 = 0.83, RMSE = 27.55 μatm) and the exponential model [((exp(b3) − exp(b5))2/(exp(b3) + exp(b5))2, R2 = 0.82, RMSE = 27.99 μatm]. A comparison between the performances of a linear regression model and a machine learning model found that the XGBoost model had the highest fitting accuracy (R2 = 0.94, RMSE = 16.86 μatm). We used Landsat/OLI images acquired mainly in 2021 to map pCO2 in Chagan Lake during the ice-free period. The pCO2 in the surface water of Chagan Lake showed considerable spatiotemporal variability within a range of 0–200 μatm. pCO2 also showed significant seasonal variations, with the lowest and highest mean values in autumn (30–50 μatm) and summer (120–150 μatm), respectively. Spatially, the pCO2 values in the southeast of Chagan Lake were higher than those in the northwest. The CO2 fluxes were calculated based on the pCO2 and ranged from −3.69 to −2.42 mmol/m2/d, indicating that Chagan Lake was absorbing CO2 (i.e., it was a weak carbon sink). Temperature, chlorophyll a, total suspended matter, and turbidity were found to have reinforcing effects on the overall trend of pCO2, while the Secchi disk depth was negatively correlated with pCO2. Dongting Lake Plain is a historic foundation for China's commodity grain production. We used Landsat images to interpret the rice planting pattern from 1990 to 2020 based on the vegetation index curve and crop time window differences. The research aims included the spatiotemporal change in the rice planting area and the multiple cropping index, the transformation properties between single-crop and double-crop, and influence factors of rice cultivation. The findings indicated that the rice planting area has increased by 23.64% over the past 30 years. However, the multiple cropping index decreased by 17.39%. The area of single-crop rice increased by 2.6 times, while the area of double-crop rice decreased by 23.19%, which indicated that the planting intensity of rice has decreased. The area where rice has been steadily planted for 30 years is approximately 5600 km2, accounting for 87% of all rice planting land in this study area. The transformation from double-crop rice to single-crop rice was the most obvious characteristic of internal changes. The marginal benefits of current agricultural policies have decreased. This research may provide a theoretical basis for the refined management of rice and improve agricultural policies. More clouds in the remote sensing image limited the time resolution. In the era of big data, making full use of remote sensing images to automatically extract surface water bodies (WBs) in complex environments is extremely challenging. Due to the weak capability of existing algorithms in extracting small WBs and WB edge information from remote sensing images, we proposed a new method—Multiscale Fusion SegFormer (MF-SegFormer)—for WB extraction in the Weihe River Basin of China using Landsat 8 OLI images. The MF-SegFormer method adopts a cascading approach to fuse features output by the SegFormer encoder at multiple scales. A feature fusion (FF) module is proposed to enhance the extraction of WB edge information, while an Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) module is employed to enhance the extraction of small WBs. Furthermore, we analyzed the impact of four kinds of band combinations on WB extraction by the MF-SegFormer model, including true color composite images, false color images, true color images, and false color images enhanced by Gaussian stretch. We also compared our proposed method with several different approaches. The results suggested that false color composite images enhanced by Gaussian stretching are beneficial for extracting WBs, and the MF-SegFormer model achieves the highest accuracy across the study area with a precision of 77.6%, recall of 84.4%, F1-score of 80.9%, and mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 83.9%. In addition, we used the determination coefficient (R2) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) to evaluate the performance of river width extraction. Our extraction results in an overall R2 of 0.946 and an RMSE of 28.21 m for the mainstream width in the "Xi'an-Xianyang" section of the Weihe River. The aim of this study was to clarify the distribution of irrigated drylands in arid and semi-arid areas, where complex terrain, diverse crops and staggered cultivated lands exist. This paper studied the classification methods of irrigated drylands based on temperature, precipitation, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) from Landsat data in the one-harvest area of the northern Loess Plateau of China by using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. An extraction method was proposed for irrigated drylands in arid and semi-arid regions of northwest China. In addition, the change types of irrigated and rainfed drylands in the two periods were classified, and a method was also put forward to directly classify the change types by using the image differences between the two periods combined with the classification results of each period. It was found that combining the ratio of NDVI and NDWI with the accumulated values of temperature and precipitation of the 30 days before imaging could effectively improve the classification accuracy. Moreover, directly classifying the gaps of remote sensing factors in the time dimension before combining spatial clustering information could yield a more accurate type of change, because the accumulation of errors in the change maps obtained from the overlay analysis of distribution maps of the two periods could be avoided. The accuracy of classification could be improved by introducing the dynamic information of time dimension into the classification of historical periods. This study complements the extraction method for this type of irrigated dryland, and the classification results can improve the accuracy of existing products in terms of spatial resolution, which can fill the shortage of detailed distribution data for irrigated and rainfed drylands in this region. Agricultural greenhouses (AGs) are an important component of modern facility agriculture, and accurately mapping and dynamically monitoring their distribution are necessary for agricultural scientific management and planning. Semantic segmentation can be adopted for AG extraction from remote sensing images. However, the feature maps obtained by traditional deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)-based segmentation algorithms blur spatial details and insufficient attention is usually paid to contextual representation. Meanwhile, the maintenance of the original morphological characteristics, especially the boundaries, is still a challenge for precise identification of AGs. To alleviate these problems, this paper proposes a novel network called high-resolution boundary refined network (HBRNet). In this method, we design a new backbone with multiple paths based on HRNetV2 aiming to preserve high spatial resolution and improve feature extraction capability, in which the Pyramid Cross Channel Attention (PCCA) module is embedded to residual blocks to strengthen the interaction of multiscale information. Moreover, the Spatial Enhancement (SE) module is employed to integrate the contextual information of different scales. In addition, we introduce the Spatial Gradient Variation (SGV) unit in the Boundary Refined (BR) module to couple the segmentation task and boundary learning task, so that they can share latent high-level semantics and interact with each other, and combine this with the joint loss to refine the boundary. In our study, GaoFen-2 remote sensing images in Shouguang City, Shandong Province, China are selected to make the AG dataset. The experimental results show that HBRNet demonstrates a significant improvement in segmentation performance up to an IoU score of 94.89%, implying that this approach has advantages and potential for precise identification of AGs. Mining for rare earth elements is rapidly increasing, driven by current and projected demands for information and energy technologies. Following China's Central Government's 2012 strategy to shift away from mining in favor of value-added processing, primary extraction has increased outside of China. Accordingly, changes in mineral exploitation in China and Myanmar have garnered considerable attention in the past decade. The prevailing assumption is that mining in China has decreased while mining in Myanmar has increased, but the dynamic in border regions is more complex. Our empirical study used Google Earth Engine (GEE) to characterize changes in mining surface footprints between 2005 and 2020 in two rare earth mines located on either side of the Myanmar–China border, within Kachin State in northern Myanmar and Nujiang Prefecture in Yunnan Province in China. Our results show that the extent of the mining activities increased by 130% on China's side and 327% on Myanmar's side during the study period. We extracted surface reflectance images from 2005 and 2010 from Landsat 5 TM and 2015 and 2020 images from Landsat 8 OLI. The Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI) was applied to dense time-series imagery to enhance landcover categories. Random Forest was used to categorize landcover into mine and non-mine classes with an overall accuracy of 98% and a Kappa Coefficient of 0.98, revealing an increase in mining extent of 2.56 km2, covering the spatial mining footprint from 1.22 km2 to 3.78 km2 in 2005 and 2020, respectively, within the study area. We found a continuous decrease in non-mine cover, including vegetation. Both mines are located in areas important to ethnic minority groups, agrarian livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and regional watersheds. The finding that mining surface areas increased on both sides of the border is significant because it shows that national-level generalizations do not align with local realities, particularly in socially and environmentally sensitive border regions. The quantification of such changes over time can help researchers and policymakers to better understand the shifting geographies and geopolitics of rare earth mining, the environmental dynamics in mining areas, and the particularities of mineral extraction in border regions. The glaciers in northwest China are mainly distributed in the northern part of the Himalayas, the Kunlun Mountains, and the Tianshan Mountains. Glaciers are an important freshwater resource in the northern part of the Kunlun Mountains, and the melting of glaciers and snow provides an assured source of water for rivers on the southern edge of the Tarim Basin. Based on the first glacier inventory dataset on China (1968), the second glacier inventory dataset on China (2009), and the glacier inventory dataset on Western China in 2018, this study used DEM data, Landsat remote sensing images, and ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis data to investigate glacier change and its influencing factors with respect to the northern part of the Kunlun Mountains. The results showed that there were 9273 glaciers in the northern part of the Kunlun Mountains in 2018, with an area of about 11,762.72 km2, an ice inventory of about 1168.53 km3, and an average length per glacier of about 1.68 km. The glaciers were mainly distributed at altitudes of 5300–6100 m (7574.66 km2). From 1968 to 2018, the number of glaciers in the northern stretch of the Kunlun Mountains increased by 343, while the glacier area decreased by 2452.80 km2 (−0.14%/a). From 2009 to 2018, the glacier area at the altitude of 4900 m to 6100 m decreased in the northern section of the Kunlun Mountains, and the glacier area at the remaining altitude increased slightly (10.67 km2). From 1968 to 2018, the glacier area and glacier length in all river basins decreased. The relative rate of glacier area change in the Qarqan River basin from 2009 to 2018 was five times that of 1968–2009, and this needs significant attention. From 1968 to 2018, both temperature and precipitation increased to varying degrees, and the increase in precipitation was beneficial to the accumulation of glaciers. Soil salinization is a major obstacle to land productivity, crop yield and crop quality in arid areas and directly affects food security. Soil profile salt data are key for accurately determining irrigation volumes. To explore the potential for using Landsat 8 time-series data to monitor soil salinization, 172 Landsat 8 images from 2013 to 2019 were obtained from the Alar Reclamation Area of Xinjiang, northwest China. The multiyear extreme dataset was synthesized from the annual maximum or minimum values of 16 vegetation indices, which were combined with the soil conductivity of 540 samples from soil profiles at 0~0.375 m, 0~0.75 m and 0~1.00 m depths in 30 cotton fields with varying degrees of salinization as investigated by EM38-MK2. Three remote sensing monitoring models for soil conductivity at different depths were constructed using the Cubist method, and digital mapping was carried out. The results showed that the Cubist model of soil profile electrical conductivity from 0 to 0.375 m, 0 to 0.75 m and 0 to 1.00 m showed high prediction accuracy, and the determination coefficients of the prediction set were 0.80, 0.74 and 0.72, respectively. Therefore, it is feasible to use a multiyear extreme value for the vegetation index combined with a Cubist modeling method to monitor soil profile salinization at a regional scale. Crop growth and development exhibit high temporal heterogeneity. It is crucial to capture the dynamic characteristics of crop growth using intensive time-series data. However, single satellites are limited by revisit cycles and weather conditions to provide dense time-series data for earth observations. However, up until now, there has been no proposed remote sensing fusion product that offers high spatial-temporal resolution specifically for farmland monitoring. Therefore, focusing on the demands of farmland remote sensing monitoring, identifying quantitative conversion relationships between multiple sensors, and providing high spatial-temporal resolution products is the first step that needs to be addressed. In this study, a fused Landsat 8 (L8) Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel-2 (S-2) multi-spectral instruments (MSI) data product for regional monitoring of farmland at high, mid, and low latitudes in China is proposed. Two image pairs for each study area covering different years were acquired from simultaneous transits of L8 OLI and S-2 MSI sensors. Then, the isolation forest (iForest) algorithm was employed to remove the anomalous pixels of image pairs and eliminate the influence of anomalous data on the conversion relationships. Subsequently, the adjustment coefficients for multi-source sensors at mixed latitudes with high spatial resolution were obtained using an ordinary least squares regression method. Finally, the L8-S-2 fused dataset based on the adjustment coefficients is proposed, which is suitable for different latitude farming areas in China. The results showed that the iForest algorithm could effectively improve the correlation between the corresponding spectral bands of the two sensors at a spatial resolution of 10 m. After the removal of anomalous pixels, excellent correlation and consistency were obtained in three study areas, and the Pearson correlation coefficients between the corresponding spectral bands almost all exceeded 0.88. Furthermore, we mixed the six image pairs of the three latitudes to obtain the adjustment coefficients derived for integrated L8 and S-2 data with high-spatial-resolution. The significance and accuracy quantification of the adjustment coefficients were thoroughly examined from three dimensions: qualitative and quantitative analyses, and spatial heterogeneity assessment. The obtained results were highly satisfactory, affirming the validity and precision of the adjustment coefficients. Finally, we applied the adjustment coefficients to crop monitoring in three latitudes. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time-series curves drawn by the integrated dataset could accurately describe the cropping system and capture the intensity changes of crop growth within the high, middle, and low latitudes of China. This study provides valuable insights into enhancing the application of multi-source remote sensing satellite data for long-term, continuous quantitative inversion of surface parameters and is of great significance for crop remote sensing monitoring. Farmland is the basis for human survival and development. The phenomenon of cropland abandonment has seriously affected national agricultural production and food security. In this study, remote sensing monitoring of abandoned cropland is carried out based on multisource time series remote sensing data using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform. Landsat and Sentinel-2 time series data from 2010–2021 were used to obtain monthly synthetic cloud-free image sets in combination with cropland plot data. The time series farmland probability dataset was generated using the random forest classification method. The LandTrendr algorithm was used to extract and analyse the time series cropland probability dataset. Finally, this study also explored the drivers of change in abandoned cropland in Fujian Province. The results show that (1) the LandTrendr algorithm can effectively extract abandoned farmland and avoid the impact of pseudovariation resulting from non-farmland categories. A total of 87.02% of the abandoned farmland was extracted in 2018; 87.50% of the abandoned farmland was extracted in 2020. (2) The abandoned area in Fujian Province fluctuated after a significant increase in 2012, with the abandoned area exceeding 30 thousand hectares. Since 2017, the abandoned area has decreased to slightly below 30 thousand hectares. (3) The regression results of the factors affecting abandoned cropland in Fujian Province show that the increase in the number of agricultural workers and the improvement in soil organic matter content will significantly reduce the area of abandoned cropland in Fujian Province, while the increase in the rate of urbanization, poor road accessibility, and insufficient irrigation conditions will increase the area of abandoned cropland. The results of this study are useful for conducting surveys of cropland abandonment and obtaining timely and accurate data on cropland abandonment. Desertification is one of the most severe environmental and socioeconomic issues facing the world today. Gonghe Basin is located in the monsoon marginal zone of China, is a sensitive area of climate change in the northeastern of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China, desertification issue has become very severe. Remote sensing monitoring provides an effective technical means for desertification control. In this study, we used Landsat images in 2010 and 2020 to extract desertification information to constructed the Albedo-NDVI feature space in the Gonghe Basin. And then analyzed temporal and spatial evolution of desertification and its driving factors using Geodetector in the Gonghe Basin from 2010 to 2020. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) Albedo-NDVI feature space method can accurately classify desertification information with accuracy of more than 90%, which was benefit to quantitative analysis of desertification. (2) The desertification situation in the Gonghe Basin had improved from 2010 to 2020, especially in the west of the basin, desertification land area decreased by 827.46 km2, and desertification intensity had been obviously reversed. (3) The changes of the desertification in the Gonghe Basin from 2010 to 2020 was affected by both natural and human factors, and the influence of human activities on desertification reversal had increased gradually. The results indicate that the desertification status in the Gonghe Basin had been effectively controlled, and can provide useful basis for the desertification combat in the Gonghe Basin. With the development of deep learning and remote sensing technologies in recent years, many semantic segmentation methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been applied to road extraction. However, previous deep learning-based road extraction methods primarily used RGB imagery as an input and did not take advantage of the spectral information contained in hyperspectral imagery. These methods can produce discontinuous outputs caused by objects with similar spectral signatures to roads. In addition, the images obtained from different Earth remote sensing sensors may have different spatial resolutions, enhancing the difficulty of the joint analysis. This work proposes the Multiscale Fusion Attention Network (MSFANet) to overcome these problems. Compared to traditional road extraction frameworks, the proposed MSFANet fuses information from different spectra at multiple scales. In MSFANet, multispectral remote sensing data is used as an additional input to the network, in addition to RGB remote sensing data, to obtain richer spectral information. The Cross-source Feature Fusion Module (CFFM) is used to calibrate and fuse spectral features at different scales, reducing the impact of noise and redundant features from different inputs. The Multiscale Semantic Aggregation Decoder (MSAD) fuses multiscale features and global context information from the upsampling process layer by layer, reducing information loss during the multiscale feature fusion. The proposed MSFANet network was applied to the SpaceNet dataset and self-annotated images from Chongzhou, a representative city in China. Our MSFANet performs better over the baseline HRNet by a large margin of +6.38 IoU and +5.11 F1-score on the SpaceNet dataset, +3.61 IoU and +2.32 F1-score on the self-annotated dataset (Chongzhou dataset). Tidal flats provide ecosystem services to billions of people worldwide; however, their changing status is largely unknown. Several challenges in the fine extraction of tidal flats using remote sensing techniques, including tide-level and water-edge line changes, exist at present, especially regarding the spatial and temporal distribution of mangroves. This study proposed a tidal flats extraction method using a combination of threshold segmentation and tidal-level correction, considering the influence of mangrove changes. We extracted the spatial distribution of tidal flats in Beibu Gulf, Southwest China, from 1987 to 2021 using time-series Landsat and Sentinel-2 images, and further analyzed the dynamic variation characteristics of the total tidal flats, each coastal segment, and the range of erosion and silting. To quantitatively investigate the interaction between tidal flats and mangroves, this study established a regression model based on multi-temporal tidal flats and mangrove data. The results indicated that the overall accuracy of the tidal flat extraction results was 93.9%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.82. The total area of tidal flats in Beibu Gulf decreased by 130 km2 from 1987 to 2021, with an average annual change of −3.7 km2/a. In addition, a negative correlation between the tidal flat change area and mangrove change area in Shankou, Maowei Sea, and Pearl Bay was observed, with correlation coefficients of −0.28, −0.30 and −0.64, respectively. These results demonstrate that the distribution of tidal flats provides a good environment and expansion space for the rapid growth of mangroves. These results can provide references for tidal flats' resource conservation, ecological health assessment, and vegetation changes in coastal wetlands in China and other countries in Southeast Asia. Accurate extraction of cropland distribution information using remote sensing technology is a key step in the monitoring, protection, and sustainable development of black soil. To obtain precise spatial distribution of cropland, an information extraction method is developed based on a fractal algorithm integrating temporal and spatial features. The method extracts multi-seasonal fractal features from the Landsat 8 OLI remote sensing data. Its efficiency is demonstrated using black soil in Lishu County, Northeast China. First, each pixel's upper and lower fractal signals are calculated using a blanket covering method based on the Landsat 8 OLI remote sensing data in the spring, summer, and autumn seasons. The fractal characteristics of the cropland and other land-cover types are analyzed and compared. Second, the ninth lower fractal scale is selected as the feature scale to extract the spatial distribution of cropland in Lishu County. The cropland vector data, the European Space Agency (ESA) WorldCover data, and the statistical yearbook from the same period are used to assess accuracy. Finally, a comparative analysis of this study and existing products at different scales is carried out, and the point matching degree and area matching degree are evaluated. The results show that the point matching degree and the area matching degree of cropland extraction using the multi-seasonal fractal features are 90.66% and 96.21%, and 95.33% and 83.52%, respectively, which are highly consistent with the statistical data provided by the local government. The extracted accuracy of cropland is much better than that of existing products at different scales due to the contribution of the multi-seasonal fractal features. This method can be used to accurately extract cropland information to monitor changes in black soil, and it can be used to support the conservation and development of black soil in China. Tsunamis can cause high numbers of casualties, as well as direct and indirect economic losses to coastal regions. The huge destructiveness of tsunamis requires us to study tsunami risk and its temporal change. We adopt the tsunami scenarios of the Ryukyu Trench as an example to analyze the temporal change in tsunami risk. According to the tsunami numerical model results, the tsunami inundation in the worst tsunami scenario covered an area of 82.83 km2. Satellite data including Landsat 8 images from July 2013 and Landsat 9 images from March 2022 were used with the random forest (RF) method to analyze land use and tsunami vulnerability in 2013 and 2022. The tsunami risk and its temporal change were analyzed by integrating tsunami hazard and tsunami vulnerability. The tsunami risk change analysis results show that the area of tsunami risk level 1 increased by 4.57 km2, and the area of tsunami risk level 4 decreased by 7.31 km2. By analyzing changes in land use and land cover (LULC) and tsunami risk, we concluded that the expansion of constructed land and the increase in coastal population were responsible for the increase in tsunami risk. The results of tsunami risk change analysis will help us understand the current tsunami risk and predict possible future risk change. In addition, it is necessary to prepare tsunami prevention measures in advance and produce tsunami emergency response plans for Qidong County and other regions under potential tsunami threat. The Mt.Tomur glaciers, in the Tian Shan mountains of Western China, are usually debris-covered, and due to climate change, glacial hazards are becoming more frequent in this region. However, no changes in the long-time series of glacier surface velocities have been observed in this region. Conducting field measurements in high-altitude mountains is relatively difficult, and consequently, the dynamics and driving factors are less studied. Here, image-correlation offset tracking using Landsat images was exploited to estimate the glacier surface velocity of glaciers in the Mt.Tomur region from 2000 to 2020 and to assess glacier ice thickness. The results show that the glacier surface velocity in the Mt.Tomur region showed a significant slowdown during 2000–2020, from 6.71 ± 0.66 m a−1 to 3.95 ± 0.66 m a−1, an overall decrease of 41.13%. The maximum glacier ice thickness in the Mt.Tomur region was estimated based on the ice flow principle being 171.27 ± 17.10 m, and the glacier average thickness is 50.00 ± 5.0 m. Glacier thickness at first increases with increasing altitude, showing more than 100 ± 10 m ice thickness between 3400 m and 4300 m, and then decreases with further increases in altitude. The reliability of the surface velocity and ice thickness obtained from remote sensing was proved using the measured surface velocity and ice thickness of Qingbingtan glacier No. 72 stall (the correlation coefficient R2 > 0.85). The debris cover has an overall mitigating effect on the ablation and movement rate of Qingbingtan Glacier No. 72; however, it has an accelerating effect on the ablation and movement rate of glacier No. 74. Urbanization has significant impacts on watershed hydrology, but previous studies have been confirmatory and not comprehensive; in particular, few studies have addressed the impact of urbanization on flooding in highly urbanized watersheds. In this study, this effect is studied in Chebei Creek, a highly urbanized watershed in the Pearl River Delta, southern China. Landsat satellite images acquired in 2015 were used to estimate land use and cover changes using the Decision Tree (DT) C4.5 classification algorithm, while the Liuxihe model, a physically based distributed hydrological model (PBDHM), is employed to simulate watershed flooding and hydrological processes. For areas with high degrees of urbanization, the duration of the flood peak is only 1 h, and the flood water level shows steep rises and falls. These characteristics increase the difficulty of flood modeling and forecasting in urbanized areas. At present, hydrological research in urbanized watersheds generally focuses on the quantitative simulation of runoff from urban areas to the watershed, flood flows, peak flood flow, and runoff depth. Few studies have involved real-time flood forecasting in urbanized watersheds. To achieve real-time flood forecasting in urbanized watersheds, PBDHMs and refined underlying surface data based on remote sensing technology are necessary. The Liuxihe model is a PBDHM that can meet the accuracy requirements of inflow flood forecasting for reservoir flood control operations. The accuracies of the two flood forecasting methods used in this study were 83.95% and 97.06%, showing the excellent performance of the Liuxihe model for the real-time flood forecasting of urbanized rivers such as the Chebei Creek watershed. Due to the combined effects of the natural environment, climate change and human activities, profound changes have occurred in terms of the eco-environmental effects of land use/cover change (LUCC) in the Baiyangdian basin. Therefore, based on land remote sensing monitoring data from 2000 to 2020, the Eco-environmental Quality Index (EQI) was introduced in this study to measure the eco-environmental effects of land use change in the Baiyangdian basin. Subsequently, the GeoDetector model was applied to detect the formation mechanism of the eco-environmental effects in the Baiyangdian basin from 2000 to 2020. The results of the study showed that cropland, woodland and grassland were the most widely distributed land use types in the Baiyangdian basin. The area of cropland declined the most and was mostly converted to construction land. The EQI increased slightly during the study period. The eco-environment of the mountainous areas in the western part of the basin and in Baiyangdian Lake was better than that of other areas. Land use intensity had a significantly stronger influence on the quality of the eco-environment than other factors. High-resolution Corona imagery acquired by the United States through spy missions in the 1960s presents an opportunity to gain critical insight into historic land cover conditions and expand the timeline of available data for land cover change analyses, particularly in regions such as Northern China where data from that era are scarce. Corona imagery requires time-intensive pre-processing, and the existing literature lacks the necessary detail required to replicate these processes easily. This is particularly true in landscapes where dynamic physical processes, such as aeolian desertification, reshape topography over time or regions with few persistent features for use in geo-referencing. In this study, we present a workflow for georeferencing Corona imagery in a highly desertified landscape that contained mobile dunes, shifting vegetation cover, and a few reference points. We geo-referenced four Corona images from Inner Mongolia, China using uniquely derived ground control points and Landsat TM imagery with an overall accuracy of 11.77 m, and the workflow is documented in sufficient detail for replication in similar environments. Attempts have been made to incorporate remote sensing techniques and in situ observations for enhanced water quality assessments. Estimations of nonoptical indicators sensitive to water environment changes, however, have not been fully studied, mainly due to complex nonlinear relationships between the observed values and surface reflectance. In this study, we applied a novel deep learning approach driven by a range of spectral properties to retrieve 6-year changes in water quality variables, i.e., Chl-a, BOD, TN, CODMn, NH3-N, and TP, on a monthly basis between 2013 and 2018 at Dongping Lake, an impounded lake located in the Yellow River in China. Band arithmetic was used to compute 26 predictors from Landsat 8 OLI imagery for model inputs. The results showed generally strong agreement between in situ and ConvLSTM-derived lake variables, generating R2 of 0.92, 0.88, 0.84, 0.80, 0.83, and 0.77 for TN, NH3-N, CODMn, Chl-a, TP, and BOD, which suggest good performance of the developed model. We then used statistical analysis to identify the spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Picea asperata, a common tree species in the subalpine areas of Li County, Sichuan Province, China, is susceptible to Lophodermium piceae. Remote sensing has the advantages of large-scale, fast information acquisition, and low cost, which can overcome the shortcomings of ground survey. Hence, we used Landsat 8 satellite multi-spectral images and forest resource distribution data to investigate and analyze this forest disease at a large scale. Firstly, we extracted the spatial distribution information of Picea asperata and chose a temporal sequence indicator to establish a regression model and obtained a significantly negative correlation between the damage degree of plants and the change rate of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Accordingly, the investigation results of the disease have good consistency with the ground survey data in spatial distribution and damage degree. On this basis, a temporal regression analysis was performed by combining the remote sensing investigation results with climate variables, and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was utilized in the spatial comprehensive analysis of Lophodermium piceae with terrain, soil and forest stand factors. Conclusively, this study effectively coped with the difficulties in full investigation and analysis of Lophodermium piceae in ecologically fragile subalpine areas of Western Sichuan. It is of important reference value in the early warning and monitoring of this disease, and also provides objective and reliable information support for ecological restoration and management planning in the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken areas. The spatial pattern and temporal variation in paddy rice areas captured by remote sensing imagery provide an effective way of performing crop management and developing suitable agricultural policies. However, fragmented and scattered rice paddies due to undulating and varied topography, and the availability and quality of remote sensing images (e.g., frequent cloud coverage) pose significant challenges to accurate long-term rice mapping, especially for traditional pixel and phenological methods in subtropical monsoon regions. This study proposed a superpixel and deep-learning-based time series method to analyze Landsat time series data for paddy rice classification in complex landscape regions. First, a superpixel segmentation map was generated using a dynamic-time-warping-based simple non-iterative clustering algorithm with preprocessed spectral indices (SIs) time series data. Second, the SI images were overlaid onto the superpixel map to construct mean SIs time series for each superpixel. Third, a multivariate long short-term memory full convolution neural network (MLSTM-FCN) classifier was employed to learn time series features of rice paddies to produce accurate paddy rice maps. The method was evaluated using Landsat imagery from 2000 to 2020 in Cengong County, Guizhou Province, China. Results indicate that the superpixel MLSTM-FCN achieved a high performance with an overall accuracy varying from 0.9547 to 0.9721, which presents an 0.17–1.23% improvement compared to the random forest method. Large-scale infrastructure, such as China–Europe Railway Express (CER-Express), which connects countries and regions across Asia and Europe, has a potentially profound effect on land use, as evidenced by changes in land cover along the railway. To ensure sustainable development of such infrastructure and appropriate land administration, effective ways to monitor and assess its impact need to be developed. Remote sensing based on publicly available satellite imagery represents an obvious choice. In the study presented here, we employ a state-of-the-art deep-learning-based approach to automatically detect different types of land cover based on multispectral Sentinel-2 imagery. We then use these data to conduct and present a study of the changes in land use in two geopolitically diverse regions of interest (in Serbia and China and with and without CER-Express infrastructure) for the period of the last three years. Our results show that the standard image-patch-based land cover classification approaches suffer a significant drop in performance in our target scenario in which each pixel needs to be assigned a cove class, but still, validate the applicability of the proposed approach as a remote sensing tool to support the sustainable development of large infrastructure. Southwest China has abundant grassland resources, but they are mainly scattered across fragmented mountainous terrain with frequently cloudy and rainy weather, making their accurate identification by remote sensing challenging. Therefore, the goal of this study was to generate prefecture-level city-scale mountainous grassland distribution data to support the development of sustainable grassland husbandry. Here, we proposed a sample selection method and comprehensively utilized multi-source data to obtain the quasi-10 m southwest grassland distribution data. The sample selection method was to first determine the sample selection range based on multi-source land use/cover database, and then to randomly select the samples under the constraint of secondary land use types, multiple factors of terrain and pure pixels. This method can deal with the difficulty in identifying the fragmented grassland distribution caused by steep mountains and hills. In addition, a multispectral time series dataset was constructed based on the fusion of Landsat 8 OLI and Sentinel-2A/B data due to cloudy and rainy weather and was used as one of the input features along with synthetic aperture radar Sentinel-1 time series data and the terrain multi-factor data. Finally, a remote sensing method to accurately identify grassland distribution in southwest China was constructed based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Taking Zhaotong City, a prefecture-level city in Yunnan Province, as an example, a thematic map of grassland distribution with an overall accuracy of 88.21% was obtained using the above method. Areas and spatial distribution information of paddy rice are important for managing food security, water use, and climate change. However, there are many difficulties in mapping paddy rice, especially mapping multi-season paddy rice in rainy regions, including differences in phenology, the influence of weather, and farmland fragmentation. To resolve these problems, a novel multi-season paddy rice mapping approach based on Sentinel-1A and Landsat-8 data is proposed. First, Sentinel-1A data were enhanced based on the fact that the backscattering coefficient of paddy rice varies according to its growth stage. Second, cropland information was enhanced based on the fact that the NDVI of cropland in winter is lower than that in the growing season. Then, paddy rice and cropland areas were extracted using a K-Means unsupervised classifier with enhanced images. Third, to further improve the paddy rice classification accuracy, cropland information was utilized to optimize distribution of paddy rice by the fact that paddy rice must be planted in cropland. Classification accuracy was validated based on ground-data from 25 field survey quadrats measuring 600 m × 600 m. The results show that: multi-season paddy rice planting areas effectively was extracted by the method and adjusted early rice area of 1630.84 km2, adjusted middle rice area of 556.21 km2, and adjusted late rice area of 3138.37 km2. Analysis of urban distribution and its expansion using remote sensing data has received increasing attention in the past three decades, but little research has examined spatial patterns of urban distribution and expansion with buffer zones in different directions. This research selected Hangzhou metropolis as a case study to analyze spatial patterns and dynamic changes based on time-series urban impervious surface area (ISA) datasets. ISA was developed from Landsat imagery between 1991 and 2014 using a hybrid approach consisting of linear spectral mixture analysis, decision tree classifiers, and post-processing. The spatial patterns of ISA distribution and its dynamic changes in eight directions--east, southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest, north, and northeast--at the temporal scale were analyzed with a buffer zone-based approach. This research indicated that ISA can be extracted from Landsat imagery with both producer and user accuracies of over 90%. ISA in Hangzhou metropolis increased from 146 km² in 1991 to 868 km² in 2014. Annual ISA growth rates were between 15.6 km² and 48.8 km² with the lowest growth rate in 1994-2000 and the highest growth rate in 2005-2010. Urban ISA increase before 2000 was mainly due to infilling within the urban landscape, and, after 2005, due to urban expansion in the urban-rural interfaces. With the high resolution of optical data and the lack of weather effects of passive microwave data, we developed an algorithm to map daily cloud-free fractional snow cover (FSC) based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) standard daily FSC product, the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR2) snow water equivalent (SWE) product and digital elevation data. We then used the algorithm to produce a daily cloud-free FSC product with a resolution of 500 m for regions in China. In addition, we produced a high-resolution FSC map using a Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) image as a true value to test the accuracy of the cloud-free FSC product developed in this study. The analysis results show that the daily cloud-free FSC product developed in this study can completely remove clouds and effectively improve the accuracy of snow area monitoring. Compared to the true value, the mean absolute error of our product is 0.20, and its root mean square error is 0.29. Thus, the synthesized product in this study can improve the accuracy of snow area monitoring, and the obtained snow area data can be used as reliable input parameters for hydrological and climate models. The land cover type and terrain factors are the main factors that limit the accuracy of the daily cloud-free FSC product developed in this study.
