The recovery of scandium (Sc) from highly acidic industrial effluents is currently hindered by the use of large quantities of flammable and toxic organic solvents. This study developed an extraction system using ionic liquids (ILs) and phenylphosphinic acid (PPAH) as diluents and an extractant, respectively, to selectively recover Sc from the aqueous phase. The effect of IL chemical structure, aqueous pH and temperature on the extraction of Sc was systematically investigated and the findings revealed that ILs with longer alkyl side chains had reduced Sc extraction ability due to the presence of continuous nonpolar domains formed by the self-aggregation of the IL alkyl side chain. The IL/PPAH system maintained high extraction ability toward Sc across a wide temperature range (288 K to 318 K) and the extraction efficiency of Sc could be improved significantly by increasing the aqueous pH. To improve the resource utilization of dredged silt and industrial waste, this study explores the efficacy of using ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), active calcium oxide (CaO), and sodium silicate (Na2O·nSiO2) as alkali activators for silt stabilization. Through a combination of addition tests, response surface method experiments, and microscopic analyses, we identified key factors influencing the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of stabilized silt, optimized material ratios, and elucidated stabilization mechanisms. The results revealed the following: (1) CaO exhibited the most pronounced stabilization effect, succeeded by Na2O·nSiO2, whereas GGBS alone displayed marginal efficacy. CaO-stabilized silt demonstrated rapid strength augmentation within the initial 7 d, while Na2O·nSiO2-stabilized silt demonstrated a more gradual strength enhancement over time, attributable to the delayed hydration of GGBS in non-alkaline conditions, with strength increments noticeably during later curing phases. (2) Response surface analysis demonstrated substantial interactions among GGBS-CaO and GGBS-Na2O·nSiO2, with the optimal dosages identified as 11.5% for GGBS, 4.1% for CaO, and 5.9% for Na2O·nSiO2. (3) X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses clarified that the hydration reactions within the GGBS-Na2O·nSiO2 composite cementitious system synergistically enhanced one another, with hydration products wrapping, filling, and binding the silt particles, thereby rendering the microstructure denser and more stable. The partial replacement effect of Portland cement by geothermal nano-SiO2 waste (GNSW) for sustainable Portland-cement-based concrete was investigated to improve the properties of concrete exposed at high critical temperatures. Portland cement was partially replaced by 20 and 30 wt.% of GNSW. The partial replacement effect on Portland-cement-based concrete subjected to 350, 550, and 750 °C was evaluated by measuring the weight changes, ultrasonic pulse velocity, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, surface inspection, and scanning electron microscopy under residual conditions. The ultrasonic pulse velocity results showed that the GNSW specimens maintained suitable stability after being heated to 350 °C. The SEM analysis revealed a denser microstructure for the 20 wt.% of partial replacement of Portland cement by GNSW specimen compared to the reference concrete when exposed to temperatures up to 400 °C, maintaining stability in its microstructure. The weight losses were higher for the specimens with partial replacements of GNSW than the reference concrete at 550 °C, which can be attributed to the pozzolanic activity presented by the GNSW, which increases the amounts of CSH gel, leading to a much denser cementitious matrix, causing a higher weight loss compared to the reference concrete. GNSW is a viable supplementary cementitious material, enhancing thermal properties up to 400 °C due to its high pozzolanic activity and filler effect while offering environmental benefits by reducing industrial waste. In recent years, the demand for natural and synthetic zeolites has surged due to their distinctive properties and myriad industrial applications. This research aims to synthesise crystalline zeolites by co-recycling two industrial wastes: salt slag (SS) and rice husk ash (RHA). Salt slag, a problematic by-product of secondary aluminium smelting, is classified as hazardous waste due to its reactive and leachable nature, though it is rich in aluminium. Conversely, RHA, an abundant and cost-effective by-product of the agro-food sector, boasts a high silicon content. These wastes were utilised as aluminium and silicon sources for synthesising various zeolites. This study examined the effects of temperature, ageing time, and sodium concentration on the formation of different zeolite phases and their crystallinity. Results indicated that increased Na+ concentration favoured sodalite (SOD) zeolite formation, whereas Linde type–A (LTA) zeolite formation was promoted at higher temperatures and extended ageing times. The formation range of the different zeolites was defined and supported by crystallographic, microstructural, and morphological analyses. Additionally, the thermal behaviour of the zeolites was investigated. This work underscores the potential to transform industrial waste, including hazardous materials like salt slag, into sustainable, high-value materials, fostering efficient waste co-recycling and promoting clean, sustainable industrial production through cross-sectoral industrial symbiosis. Urban construction generates significant amounts of construction residue soil. This paper introduces a novel soil stabilizer based on industrial waste to improve its utilization. This stabilizer is primarily composed of blast furnace slag (BFS), steel slag (SS), phosphogypsum (PG), and other additives, which enhance soil strength through physical and chemical processes. This study investigated the mechanical properties of construction residue soil cured with this stabilizer, focusing on the effects of organic matter content (Oo), stabilizer dosage (Oc), and curing age (T) on unconfined compressive strength (UCS). Additionally, water stability and wet–dry cycle tests of the stabilized soil were conducted to assess long-term performance. According to the findings, the UCS increased with the higher stabilizer dosage and longer curing periods but reduced with the higher organic matter content. A stabilizer content of 15–20% is recommended for optimal stabilization efficacy and cost-efficiency in engineering applications. The samples lost their strength when immersed in water. However, adding more stabilizers to the soil can effectively enhance its water stability. Under wet–dry cycle conditions, the UCS initially increased and then decreased, remaining lower than that of samples cured under standard conditions. Highlights: Data analysis revealed that an appropriate amount of BPG can enhance the mechanical properties of cementitious materials, with compressive strength increasing by an average of 7–30%. The mechanical properties and underlying mechanisms of BPG-based cementitious materials were summarized. This study analyzed the mechanisms of the conversion and utilization of elements of impurities in BPG, as well as the solidification mechanisms of hazardous elements. The mechanisms of synergistic utilization between BPG and silica–alumina-based solid waste, as well as alkaline solid waste, are summarized, showcasing innovative waste management strategies. A sustainable solution for promoting the collaborative low-carbon development of various industrial solid wastes using BPG is proposed. Industrial byproduct gypsum (BPG) is a secondary product that is mainly composed of calcium sulfate discharged during industrial production. BPG primarily consists of desulfurized gypsum, phosphogypsum, and titanium gypsum, which account for 88% of the total BPG in China. The large-scale utilization of these three types of solid waste is crucial for the safe disposal of BPG. BPG contains various impurities and harmful elements, limiting its applications. The continuous accumulation of BPG poses a serious threat to the safety of the environment. Based on a literature review (2021–2023), it was found that 52% of BPG is used in the preparation of cementitious materials, and the addition of BPG results in an average improvement of 7–30% in the mechanical properties of cementitious materials. Moreover, BPG has a positive impact on the immobilization of hazardous elements in raw materials. Therefore, the utilization of BPG in cementitious materials is beneficial for its large-scale disposal. This study primarily reviews the effects and mechanisms of BPG on the mechanical properties of cementitious materials and the solidification of hazardous elements. Most importantly, the review reveals that BPG positively influences the hydration activity of silica–alumina-based solid waste (such as steel slag and blast furnace slag) and alkaline solid waste (such as carbide slag and red mud). This improves the proportion of solid waste in cement and reduces production costs and carbon emissions. Finally, this article summarizes and proposes the application of BPG in cementitious materials. The application of BPG + silica–alumina solid waste + alkaline solid-waste-based cementitious materials is expected to realize a new type of green ecological chain for the joint utilization of multiple industrial solid wastes and to promote the low-carbon sustainable development of industrial clusters. River temperature is a critical parameter influencing aquatic ecosystems and water quality. However, it can be changed by natural (e.g., flow and depth conditions) and human factors (e.g., waste and industrial water drainage). Satellite-based monitoring offers a valuable tool for assessing river temperature on a large scale, elucidating the impacts of various factors. This study aims to analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of surface water temperature (SWT) in the medium-sized Tisza River in response to natural and anthropogenic influences, employing Landsat satellites and in situ water temperature data. The validity of the Landsat-based SWT estimates was assessed across different channel sections with varying sizes. The longitudinal thermal profile of the Tisza was analyzed by mosaicking, monthly, four Landsat 9 images, covering the entire 962 km length of the Tisza in 2023. The impact of climate change was evaluated by analyzing SWT trends at a specific site from 1984 to 2024, utilizing 483 Landsat 4–9 images. The findings indicated elevated accuracy for Landsat-based SWT estimation (R2 = 0.94; RMSE = 3.66 °C), particularly for channel sizes covering ≥ 3 pixels. Discharge, microclimatic conditions, and channel morphology significantly influence SWT, demonstrating a general increasing trend downstream with occasional decreases during the summer months. Dams were observed to lower the SWT downstream due to cooler bottom reservoir water discharge, with more pronounced differences during the summer months (1–3 °C). Tributaries predominantly (75%) elevated the SWT in the Tisza River, albeit with varying magnitudes across different months. Over the 40-year study period, an increasing trend in SWT was discerned, with an annual rise rate of 0.0684 °C. While the thermal band of Landsat satellites proved valuable for investigating the Tisza River's thermal profile at a broad scale, finer spatial resolution bands are necessary for detecting small-scale phenomena such as thermal plumes and localized temperature variations in rivers. This review embarks on a comprehensive journey, exploring the application of lignocellulosic biomass materials as highly effective adsorbents for the removal of textile dyes (cationic and anionic dyes) from wastewater. A literature review and analysis were conducted to identify existing gaps in previous research on the use of lignocellulosic biomass for dye removal. This study investigates the factors and challenges associated with dye removal methods and signifies their uses. The study delves into the pivotal role of several parameters influencing adsorption, such as contact time, pH, concentration, and temperature. It then critically examines the adsorption isotherms, unveiling the equilibrium relationship between adsorbent and dye and shedding light on the mechanisms of their interaction. The adsorption process kinetics are thoroughly investigated, and a detailed examination of the adsorbed rate of dye molecules onto lignocellulosic biomass materials is carried out. This includes a lively discussion of the pseudo-first, pseudo-second, and intra-particle diffusion models. The thermodynamic aspects of the adsorption process are also addressed, elucidating the feasibility and spontaneity of the removal process under various temperature conditions. The paper then dives into desorption studies, providing insights into the regeneration potential of lignocellulosic biomass materials for sustainable reusability. The environmental impact and cost-effectiveness of employing lignocellulosic biomass materials in textiles including Congo Red, Reactive Black 5, Direct Yellow 12, Crystal Violet, Malachite Green, Acid Yellow 99, and others dyes from wastewater treatment are discussed, emphasizing the significance of eco-friendly solutions. Several mining-related pollutions, industrial waste, and soil deterioration define South Africa's environmental landscape. These have led to the consumption of unhealthy food, contaminated agricultural products, and polluted water. The polluted environment has been linked to numerous diseases among the populace, thus making environmental remediation an important issue in South Africa. Phytoremediation has been identified as a biological method for the restoration of polluted environments naturally and holistically. Therefore, it is vital to evaluate the level of phytoremediation-related research in South Africa in pursuit of a way out of environmental pollution. Thus, the purpose of this study was to map phytoremediation-related research in South Africa from inception to 2022. Statistical records from the Web of Science Core Collection were analyzed with the bibliometric package in RStudio, while mapping was performed via VOSviewer. Our study showed a low annual growth rate of publication (4.49%). The analysis uncovered that the 39 documents analyzed were written by 112 authors, and the first document was featured in the Journal of Geochemical Exploration in 1997. Kirkham, MB and Liphadzi, MS are the most relevant authors. USA has the strongest collaboration with South Africa, while the International Journal of Phytoremediation, the South African Journal of Botany, and Water SA are the most relevant journals. The electrodes of industrial electrostatic precipitators degrade as a result of two phenomena: corrosion and erosion. The first is chemical degradation by highly reactive compounds formed during combustion, in particular, during the incineration of municipal or industrial wastes or high-sulfur coal. The degradation intensity of electrostatic precipitator electrodes depends on the chemical composition of the exhaust gasses. High concentrations of chlorides, fluorides, or sulfur in the exhaust gasses cause strong corrosion of the electrostatic precipitator elements. The second mechanism is the erosion caused by solid particles conveyed by the exhaust gas stream due to their collision with the electrodes. In this study, the analysis of the degradation of electrodes of an electrostatic precipitator downstream of an industrial waste incinerator was carried out. The industrial wastes of unknown sources were subjected to thermal degradation in a rotary kiln. The aim of this study was to provide fundamental knowledge about the mechanisms of electrode degradation located on the surface of discharge electrodes of electrostatic precipitators during the combustion of industrial wastes. The present research presents a method for scaling up a continuous treatment system with bacterial cellulose biomass for the removal of contaminants on a large industrial scale from effluents loaded with chromium (VI). This consisted of a laboratory-scale modeling process of the chromium (VI) adsorption processes, which would provide the necessary parameters to build a system on an industrial scale. The research also involved designing, modeling and developing scale models for the treatment of water contaminated with chromium (VI) through bacterial cellulose biomass. The results of the model indicated the specific route for the construction of a treatment system on an industrial scale, with the experimental data adjusted to achieve this objective. The pilot scale prototype was built using 450 g of biomass, including elution processes, with the data obtained from the aforementioned processes. In general, the excellent efficiency of the two models at different scales, together with the excellent elution results, suggests that this prototype could be presented to polluting industries for the treatment of water from different industrial effluents, being an advanced biotechnology for the treatment of industrial wastewater. The utilization of industrial solid waste in mines is an important approach to resource utilization. The backfill material in mines is mainly composed of solid waste, which plays a supporting role. The excitation effect of lime on phosphogypsum and fly ash in backfill was studied in this paper. The macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the backfill material were tested using uniaxial compression, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical techniques, and a relationship model was established between them. Furthermore, the influence of industrial solid waste on the properties of the backfill material under the action of lime and the hydration mechanism between different industrial solid wastes were studied. The results show that (1) under the action of lime, fly ash reacts with lime to produce C-S-H and C-A-H, and then C-A-H reacts with phosphogypsum to produce AFt. (2) The excess phosphogypsum also fills the pores. Therefore, 1.8% lime reduces the porosity of the backfill by 17.88% and increases the strength by 21.57%. (3) The cross-scale relationship shows that strength is inversely proportional to each type of pore content and fractal dimension, and it logarithmically increases with impedance at different frequencies. Sodium alginate (SA)–purple sweet potato peel extracts (PPE) from industrial waste indicator films were developed at different drying temperatures (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55 °C). The effects of drying temperatures on the film's structural, physical, and sensitive properties were investigated. On the structural properties, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction indicated that compactness, intermolecular interactions, and crystallinity of indicator films were improved at a lower drying temperature. On the physical properties, with the drying temperature increasing, elongation at the break increased significantly (p < 0.05); ΔE and water-vapor permeability decreased significantly (p < 0.05); and thickness and tensile strength initially increased significantly (90.46 → 98.46, 62.99 → 95.73) and subsequently decreased significantly (98.46 → 71.93, 95.73 → 55.44) (p < 0.05), with the maximum values obtained at 30 °C. On sensitivity, the corresponding colors of the films became lighter as the drying temperature increased, and the films exhibited relatively excellent pH and NH3 sensitivity, with easily discernible color changes at lower temperatures. The results of this paper revealed that the overall film characteristics are improved at lower drying temperatures, which will provide valuable references for selecting the drying temperature for preparing indicator films as a guide for industrialized production. Prior research has demonstrated that incorporating solid waste from various sources, such as plastics, civil engineering waste, and industrial and mining waste, into pavement and civil works mixes has notable environmental benefits. This includes reducing the over-exploitation of aggregate banks and preventing waste materials from being deposited in open-pit landfills for extended periods. This review focuses on sustainable aggregates produced from solid waste with rheological or mechanical properties suitable for replacing conventional aggregates in asphalt or hydraulic concrete mixtures. The aim is to determine the optimal replacement percentage in the mixture to directly impact pavement performance. This review also delves into the impact on fatigue resistance and permanent deformation based on the type of waste material used in construction. Additionally, using sustainable aggregates presents added benefits for pavement binders, such as inhibiting reflection cracks, reducing traffic noise, and prolonging the service life of the pavement. However, it is crucial to study the percentage of replacement of sustainable aggregates in conjunction with other materials using mathematical models and simulations to ensure a substantial contribution to the sustainability of the construction industry. The elimination of metal ions from industrial waste water is one of the most significant environmental needs. For the first time, two chitosan hydrogels that we had previously synthesized, cross-linked with varying concentrations of trimellitic anhydride isothiocyanate (represented by H1 and H2), were utilized in this investigation to adsorb Cu(II) ions. We found that pH 6, 25 °C, 200 mg L−1 of Cu(II) ions concentration, and 15 mg of hydrogel dosage were the ideal parameters for Cu(II) ion elimination. The kinetics of their adsorption fitted to the pseudo-second-order model with the highest correlation coefficient (R2) values equal to 0.999 and 1.00 for H1 and H2, respectively. The experimental qe values were found when H1 was equal to 97.59 mg g−1 (theoretical value is equal to 98.04 mg g−1) and H2 was equal to 96.20 mg g−1 (theoretical value is equal 99.01 mg g−1). The hydrogels achieved a removal effectiveness of 97.59% and their adsorption isotherms matched the Freundlich model, indicating the multi-layered and homogeneous adsorption nature. The removal of copper ions is significantly driven by the physisorption phenomenon. The hydrogels have a great possibility to be utilized as promising, efficacious, reusable adsorbents for industrial wastewater remediation. Thus, incorporation of a cross-linker, containing binding centers for Cu(II) ions, between chitosan chains is a good way to obtain suitable efficient adsorbents which are good choices for application in the field of metal elimination. This work focused on the decolorization of methyl red (MR) from an aqueous solution utilizing Rumex abyssinicus-derived biochar (RAB). RAB was prepared to involve unit operations such as size reduction, drying, and carbonization. The pyrolysis of the precursor material was carried out at a temperature of 500 °C for two hours. After that, the prepared RAB was characterized by the pH point of zero charge (pHpzc), the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. On the other hand, a batch adsorption experiment of MR removal onto RAB was conducted, considering four operating parameters: pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial dye concentration. The characterization of the adsorbent material revealed a porous and heterogeneous surface morphology during SEM, a specific surface area of 45.8 m2/g during the BET method, the presence of various functional groups during FTIR, and a pHpzc of 6.2. The batch adsorption experiment analysis results revealed that a maximum removal efficiency of 99.2% was attained at an optimum working condition of pH 6, contact time of 40 min, initial dye concentration of 70 mg/L and adsorbent dosage of 0.2 g/100 mL. Furthermore, Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.99) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.99) models confirmed the heterogeneous surface interaction and chemisorption nature. Red mud (RM), a hazardous solid waste generated in the alumina production process, of which the mineral composition is mainly hematite, is unable to be applied directly in the cement industry due to its high alkalinity. With the rise of geopolymers, RM-based grouting materials play an essential role in disaster prevention and underground engineering. To adequately reduce the land-based stockpiling of solid wastes, ultrafine calcium oxide, red mud, and slag were utilized as the main raw materials to prepare geopolymers, the C-R-S (calcium oxide–red mud–slag) grouting cementitious materials. The direct impact of red mud addition on the setting time, fluidity, water secretion, mechanical properties, and rheological properties of C-R-S were also investigated. In addition, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), three-dimensional CT (3D-CT), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and other characterization techniques were used to analyze the microstructure and polymerization mechanism. The related results reveal that the increase in red mud addition leads to an enhanced setting time, and the C-R-S-40 grouting cementitious material (40% red mud addition) exhibits the best fluidity of 27.5 cm, the lowest water secretion rate of 5.7%, and a high mechanical strength of 57.7 MPa. The C-R-S polymer grout conforms to the Herschel–Bulkley model, and the fitted value of R2 is above 0.99. All analyses confirm that the preparation process of C-R-S grouting cementitious material not only substantially improves the utilization rate of red mud, but also provides a theoretical basis for the high-volume application of red mud in the field of grouting. The intricate composition of wastewater impedes the recycling of agricultural and industrial effluents. This study aims to investigate the potential of sisal leaf wastewater (SLW), both water-treated (WTSLW) and alkali-treated (ATSLW), as a substitute for the alkali activator (NaOH solution) in the production of slag-powder- and fly-ash-based composites, with a focus on the effects of WTSLW substitution ratios and sisal leaf soaking durations. Initially, the fresh properties were assessed including electrical conductivity and fluidity. A further analysis was conducted on the influence of both WTSLW and ATSLW on drying shrinkage, density, and mechanical strength, including flexural and compressive measures. Microstructural features were characterized using SEM and CT imaging, while XRD patterns and FTIR spectra were employed to dissect the influence of WTSLW substitution on the composite's products. The results show that incorporating 14 wt% WTSLW into the composite enhances 90-day flexural and compressive strengths by 34.8% and 13.2%, respectively, while WTSLW curtails drying shrinkage. Conversely, ATSLW increases porosity and decreases density. Organic constituents in both WTSLW and ATSLW encapsulated in the alkaline matrix fail to modify the composites' chemical composition. The presence of pharmaceuticals or their active metabolites in receiving waters is a sign of the inefficient removal of bioactive substrates from wastewater. Adsorption seems to be the most effective and inexpensive method of their removal. Waste management aimed at sorbents is a promising way to sustain several sustainable development goals. In the presented paper, the removal of the two most widely used drugs in the wastewater was examined. Diclofenac and carbamazepine were removed from water and wastewater using textile waste-derived sorbents. Their removal efficiency was verified by testing several process parameters such as the time of the sorption, the presence of interfering inorganic ions, the presence of dissolved organic matter, the initial pH and ionic strength of the solution, and various water matrices. The adsorption capacity was noted for diclofenac (57.1 mg/g) and carbamazepine (21.25 mg/g). The tested process parameters (pH, presence of inorganic ions, dissolved organic matter, ionic strength, water matrix) confirmed that the presented waste materials possessed a great potential for pharmaceutical removal from water matrices. The increasing global demand for cement significantly impacts greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption, necessitating sustainable alternatives. This study investigates fresh geopolymer (GP) pastes incorporating 20 wt.% of five industrial wastes—suction dust, red mud from alumina production, electro-filter dust, and extraction sludges from food supplement production and from partially stabilized industrial waste—as potential replacements for traditional cement. Consistent synthesis methods are used to prepare the geopolymers, which are characterized for their physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties. Ionic conductivity and pH measurements together with integrity tests, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and leaching analysis are used to confirm the stability of the synthesized geopolymers. Fourier-transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is used to follow geopolymerization occurrences. Results for ionic conductivity, pH, and integrity revealed that the synthesized GPs were macroscopically stable. TGA revealed that the main mass losses were ascribable to water dehydration and to water entrapped in the geopolymer networks. Only the GP filled with the powder of the red mud coming from alumina production experienced a mass loss of 23% due to a partial waste degradation. FT-IR showed a red shift in the main Si-O-(Si or Al) absorption band, indicating successful geopolymer network formations. Additionally, most of the GPs filled with the wastes exhibited higher compressive strength (37.8–58.5 MPa) compared to the control (22 MPa). Only the GP filled with the partially stabilized industrial waste had a lower mechanical strength as its structure was highly porous because of gas formation during geopolymerization reactions. Despite the high compressive strength (58.5 MPa) of the GP filled with suction dust waste, the concentration of Sb leached was 25 ppm, which limits its use. Eventually, all samples also demonstrated effective antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus due to the alkaline environment and the presence of metal cations able to react with the bacterial membranes. Catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction (NOX SCR) of nitrogen oxides can be obtained from sludge in industrial waste treatment, and, due to the complex composition of sludge, NOX SCR shows various SCR efficiencies. In the current work, an SCR catalyst developed from the sludge produced with Fe/C micro-electrolysis Fenton technology (MEF) in wastewater treatment was investigated, taking into account various sludge compositions, Fe/C ratios, and contaminant contents. It was found that, at about 300 °C, the NOX removal rate could reach 100% and there was a wide decomposition temperature zone. The effect of individual components of electroplating sludge, i.e., P, Fe and Ni, on NOX degradation performance of the obtained solids was investigated. It was found that the best effect was achieved when the Fe/P was 8/3 wt%, and variations in the Ni content had a limited effect on the NOX degradation performance. When the Fe/C was 1:2 and the Fe/C/P was 1:2:0.4, the electroplating sludge formed after treatment with Fe/C MEF provided the best NOX removal rate at 100%. Moreover, the characterization results show that the activated carbon was also involved in the catalytic reduction degradation of NOX. An excessive Fe content may cause agglomeration on the catalyst surface and thus affect the catalytic efficiency. The addition of P effectively reduces the catalytic reaction temperature, and the formation of phosphate promotes the generation of adsorbed oxygen, which in turn contributes to improvements in catalytic efficiency. Therefore, our work suggests that controlling the composition in the sludge is an efficient way to modulate SCR catalysis, providing a bridge from contaminant-bearing waste to efficient catalyst. Trace concentrations of dyes are often present in textile wastewater streams and present a serious environmental problem. Thus, these dyes must be removed from wastewater either by degradation or sequestration prior to discharge of the wastewater into the environment. Existing processes to remove these wastewater contaminants include the use of solid sorbents to sequester dyes or the use of biochemical or chemical methods of dye degradation. However, these processes typically generate their own waste products, are not necessarily rapid because of the low dye concentration, and often use expensive or non-recyclable sequestrants or reagents. This paper describes a simple, recyclable, liquid–liquid extraction scheme where ionic dyes can be sequestered into poly(α-olefin) (PAO) solvent systems. The partitioning of anionic and cationic dyes from water into PAOs is facilitated by ionic PAO-phase anchored sequestering agents that are readily prepared from commercially available vinyl-terminated polyisobutylene (PIB). This is accomplished by a sequence of reactions involving hydroboration/oxidation, conversion of an alcohol into an iodide, and conversion of the resulting primary alkyl iodide into a cationic nitrogen derivative. The products of this synthetic sequence are cationic nitrogen iodide salts which serve as anionic sequestrants that are soluble in PAO. These studies showed that the resulting series of cationic PIB-bound cationic sequestering agents facilitated efficient extraction of anionic, azo, phthalein, and sulfonephthalein dyes from water into a hydrocarbon PAO phase. Since the hydrocarbon PAO phase is completely immiscible with water and the PIB derivatives are also insoluble in water, neither the sequestration solvent nor the sequestrants contaminate wastewater. The effectiveness and efficiency of these sequestrations were assayed by UV–visible spectroscopy. These spectroscopic studies showed that extraction efficiencies were in most cases >99%. These studies also involved procedures that allowed for the regeneration and recycling of these PAO sequestration systems. This allowed us to recycle the PAO solvent system for at least 10 sequential batch extractions where we sequestered sodium salts of methyl red and 4′,5′-dichlorofluorescein dyes from water with extraction efficiencies of >99%. These studies also showed that a PIB-bound derivative of the sodium salt of 1,1,1-trifluoromethylpentane-2,4-dione could be prepared from a PIB-bound carboxylic acid ester by a Claisen-like reaction and that the sodium salt of this β-diketone could be used to sequester cationic dyes from water. Real textile wastewater (RTWW) poses significant environmental challenges. RTWW typically contains high levels of organic compounds, such as dyes, as well as inorganic substances like salts. These contaminants can harm aquatic life when released into water bodies without appropriate treatment. RTWW was subjected to a series of sequential treatments: exchange resins for removing ions, advanced oxidation with bicarbonate-activated peroxide to degrade organic matter, and a biological treatment based on the Zahn–Wellens test to remove remaining chemical oxygen demand (COD) The advanced oxidation process based on the activation of H2O2 with NaHCO3 (catalyzed with cobalt impregnated on a pillared clay, Co/Al–PILC)) was optimized using central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM). After the process integration, reductions in ion concentrations, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon content (TOC) were achieved. Reduced hardness (99.94%) and ions (SO42− and acid black 194 dye of 99.88 and 99.46%, respectively), COD (96.64%), and TOC (96.89%), guaranteeing complete treatment of RTWW, were achieved. Additionally, the biodegradability index of RTWW increased from 0.28 ± 0.01 to 0.90 ± 0.01, and phytotoxicity was reduced, going from a phytotoxic that inhibited the germination of lettuce seeds to a phytostimulant after biological treatment with activated sludge. Textile industry effluents contain several hazardous substances, such as dye-containing effluents, which pose environmental and aesthetic challenges. Presently, the microbial-based remediation process is in use. This study investigated the application of ferrous–ferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, a readily formulated nanoadsorbent, to remove scattered dye molecules from industrial effluents. The ferrous–ferric oxide nanoparticles were prepared using a chemical co-precipitation method. The nanoparticles had 26.93 emu g−1 magnetization, with sizes smaller than 20 nm, and possessed a highly purified cubic spinel crystallite structure. The catalytic activity of the iron oxide depended on the dose, photocatalytic enhancer, i.e., H2O2 level, pH of the reaction medium, and dye concentration. We optimized the Fenton-like reaction to work best using 1.0 g/L of ferrous–ferric oxide nanoparticles, 60 mM oxalic acid at pH 7.0, and 60 ppm of dye. Iron oxides act as photocatalysts, and oxalic acid generates electron–hole pairs. Consequently, higher amounts of super-radicals cause the rapid degradation of dye and pseudo-first-order reactions. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis revealed the ferrous–ferric oxide nanoparticles decolorized and destroyed Disperse Red 277 in 180 min under visible light. Hence, complete demineralization is observed using a photo-Fenton-like reaction within 3 h under visible light. These high-capacity, easy-to-separate next-generation adsorption systems are suggested to be suitable for industrial-scale use. The application of geopolymers has recently been given significant attention to address climate change and the growing scarcity of construction materials in the 21st century. Researchers have utilized industrial waste or supplementary cementitious materials containing high levels of silica and alumina as precursors along with different alkaline activators. Furthermore, the technical challenges associated with waste brick management or recycling include both land use changes and financial implications. The existence of amorphous aluminosilicates in waste clay bricks, which can be used as geopolymer binders, has drawn attention recently. This paper reviews the recent advancements of the integration of clay brick wastes in geopolymer applications, individually as well as its use with other alternative materials. Prior studies suggest that waste clay bricks can effectively serve as the primary source material in geopolymer applications. This review covers various aspects, including the assessment of fresh, mechanical, microstructure, and durability-related properties. It specifically focused on enhancing these properties of waste clay bricks through mechanical and thermal treatments, through varying curing conditions, utilizing different types of alkaline activators, and considering their properties and corresponding ratios in the development of geopolymer products using waste brick powder. Furthermore, this paper portrays a critical review of the sustainability implications of the utilization of clay brick waste in geopolymer applications. Conclusively, this review provided the lessons learnt, research gaps, and the future direction for investigation into the feasibility of geopolymers derived from waste clay brick powder. In this article, one of the main scientific directions was the search for ways of recycling coal mining waste to produce expanded clay granules. There are a number of scientific studies devoted to the use of various industrial wastes in the production of thermal insulation and fireproof expanded clay granules. The authors consider the production of granular porous aggregates based on pulverized fractions of igneous rocks—basalt, granite, and synertite, as well as man-made materials of various origins, to be promising. According to the results of the conducted studies, it was found that the optimal interval of the amount of waste in expanded clay was 4.0–6.0%, and the optimal firing temperature was 1150 °C with the production of samples with a bulk density of 0.337–0.348 t/m3 and with a compressive strength of 1.37–1.51 MPa under these conditions. Bioelectrochemical processes are emerging as one of the most efficient and sustainable technologies for wastewater treatment. Their application for industrial wastewater treatment is still low due to the high toxicity and difficulty of biological treatment for industrial effluents. This is especially relevant in pharmaceutical industries, where different solvents, active pharma ingredients (APIs), extreme pH, and salinity usually form a lethal cocktail for the bacterial community in bioreactors. This work evaluates the impact of the anode architecture on the detoxification performance and analyzes, for the first time, the profile of some key bioremediation enzymes (catalase and esterase) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the operation of microbial electrochemical cells treating real pharmaceutical wastewater. Our results show the existence of oxidative stress and loss of cell viability in planktonic cells, while the electrogenic bacteria that form the biofilm maintain their biochemical machinery intact, as observed in the bioelectrochemical response. Monitorization of electrical current flowing in the bioelectrochemical system showed how electroactive biofilm, after a short adaptation period, started to degrade the pharma effluent. One of the main challenges in the treatment of industrial wastewater is the removal of oil-in-water emulsions, which are stable and therefore difficult to treat. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has structural characteristics that make it an ideal filtration membrane. Several research projects are underway to develop new materials, both biotechnological and traditional, for use in filter beds. The study examined the potential of a BC membrane filtration system for treating oily industrial wastewaters, an underexplored biomaterial in wastewater treatment. The results demonstrated that BC is highly effective at removing oily contaminants (~99%), reducing the colour and particulate matter of wastewater, as well as eliminating nearly the entire microbiological load (~99%). SEM, MEV, FTIR, XRD, and TGA confirmed the presence of oil in the interior of the membrane after filtration, characteristic peaks of its chemical composition, and a 40% reduction in crystallinity. TGA revealed an increase from three (pre-filtration) to five (post-filtration) stages of thermal degradation, indicating the retention of the contaminant in the BC. The mechanical tests demonstrated that the membrane has a tensile strength of 72.13 ± 8.22 MPa and tolerated elongation of up to 21.11 ± 4.81% prior to tearing. The BC membrane also exhibited excellent flexibility, as it could be folded >100 times at the same point without exhibiting signs of tearing. The BC surpasses traditional methods, such as activated charcoal and effluent treatment stations, in the removal of emulsified oils. The findings demonstrate that BC is promising for the treatment of industrial wastewaters, which is a field that requires continual technological innovations to mitigate the environmental impacts of the oil industry. This study reports, for the first time, on the assessment of a multistage sequential system composed of coagulation–flocculation with different electro-Fenton-based configurations, followed by neutralization (N), for the treatment of raw textile wastewater heavily contaminated with acid black 194 dye and other pollutants. Electrochemical peroxidation (ECP-N), electro-Fenton (EF-N) and peroxi-coagulation (PC-N) were tested at laboratory scale and compared in terms of their efficiency for the removal of organic matter and color, current efficiency and energetic parameter, operating cost and environmental sustainability using life cycle analysis conducted in large-scale virtual reactors. The three electro-Fenton-based systems complied with current environmental standards (color removal > 87%, COD < 400 mg/L, among others) requiring different electrolysis times: ECP-N (52 min) < PC-N (120 min) < EF-N (160 min); energy consumptions: ECP-N (2.27 kWh/m3) < PC-N (4.28 kWh/m3) < EF-N (33.2 kWh/m3); operational costs: ECP-N (2.63 USD/m3) < EF-N (6.65 USD/m3) < PC-N (6.98 USD/m3); among others. Electricity (for ECP-N and EF-N) and reagents (for ECP-N and PC-N) were found as main environmental hotspots. ECP-N presented the lowest carbon footprint of 10.3 kg CO2-Eq/FU (2-Eq/FU) < EF-N (38.0 kg CO2-Eq/FU), had lower incidence in all the impact categories analyzed (ReCiPe-2016 at midpoint level) and can be considered technically, economically and environmentally sustainable for large-scale applications. Lightweight aggregate concrete, known for its light weight, thermal insulation, and excellent durability, has garnered significant attention and is considered an ideal material for lightweight ultra-high-performance concrete. Previous research has discovered that prewetting lightweight aggregates can continuously release water during the setting and hardening process of concrete, providing internal curing. However, the moisture release behavior of prewetted lightweight aggregates under different temperature and humidity conditions, as well as their internal curing mechanisms in low water–cement ratio mixtures, remains unclear and requires further investigation. In response to environmental sustainability, this study utilizes industrial waste γ-C2S to produce a high-strength carbonized γ-C2S lightweight aggregate (CC) and primarily compares the water absorption and release characteristics of three different types of lightweight aggregates, focusing on the influence of curing temperature and humidity on the water release behavior of the prewetted CC and establishing a water release model for the prewetted CC in cement-based materials. The experimental results indicate that the water absorption rates of the self-made high-performance lightweight aggregate (CC), magnesian lightweight aggregate (MC), and shale lightweight aggregate (SC) conform to the typical Boxlucas equation. In an air environment, the CC has the longest water release duration, followed by the MC, with the SC being the fastest. The water storage performance of the prewetted SC was poor, while the 100% prewetted CC exhibited better water storage during the mixing stage. When the CC is 100% prewetted, it can significantly increase the free water content in the interfacial transition zone, aiding in the hydration of the interfacial transition zone and enhancing the efficiency of shrinkage compensation by the expansive agent. Phosphogypsum (PG) occupies a large amount of land due to its large annual production and low utilization rate, and at the same time causes serious environmental problems due to toxic impurities. PG is used for mine backfill, and industrial solid waste is a curing agent for PG, which can save the filling cost and reduce environmental pollution. In this paper, PG was used as a raw material, combined with steel slag (SS) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) under the action of an alkali-activated agent (NaOH) to prepare all-solid waste phosphogypsum-based backfill material (PBM). The effect of the GGBS to SS ratio on the compressive strength and toxic leaching of PBM was investigated. The chemical composition of the raw materials was obtained by XRF analysis, and the mineral composition and morphology of PBM and its stabilization/curing mechanism against heavy metals were analyzed using XRD and SEM-EDS. The results showed that the best performance of PBM was achieved when the contents of PG, GGBS, and SS were 80%, 13%, and 7%, the liquid-to-solid ratio was 0.4, and the mass concentration of NaOH was 4%, with a strength of 2.8 MPa at 28 days. The leaching concentration of fluorine at 7 days met the standard of groundwater class IV (2 mg/L), and the leaching concentration of phosphorus was detected to be less than 0.001 mg/L, and the leaching concentration of heavy metals met the environmental standard at 14 d. The hydration concentration in PBM met the environmental standard. The hydration products in PBM are mainly ettringite and C-(A)-S-H gel, which can effectively stabilize the heavy metals in PG through chemical precipitation, physical adsorption, and encapsulation. As an industrial waste residue, Electrolytic Manganese Residue (EMR) can greatly promote sludge dewatering and further particle-size optimization can significantly strengthen sludge dewaterability. In this study, the effects of ammonium sulfate, calcium sulphate dihydrate, and manganese carbonate in EMR on sludge dewatering performance were investigated using the response surface optimization method. It was found that the optimized ratio of three components in EMR was 1.0:1.6:2.2 based on capillary suction time (CST), specific resistance of filtration (SRF), and zeta potential of dewatered sludge. The composition ratio of particle-size optimized EMR was modified based on the above optimization, resulting in a significant increase in sludge dewatering performance (CST and SRF reduced by 8.7% and 11.2%, respectively). Compared with those in original sludge, the content of bound extracellular polymeric substances in the conditioned sludge with optimized ratio was drastically reduced while that of soluble extracellular polymeric substances was slightly increased, which was in accordance with the decline of fluorescence intensity. These findings indicated the disintegration of extracellular polymeric substances, the enhancement of hydrophobicity, and dewatering properties of the sludge. The routine dredging of waterways produces huge volumes of sediments. Handling contaminated dredged sediments poses significant and diverse challenges around the world. In recent years, novel and sustainable ex situ remediation technologies for contaminated sediments have been developed and applied. This review article focuses on cement-based binders in stabilizing contaminants through the stabilization/solidification (S/S) technique and the utilization of contaminated sediments as a resource. Through S/S techniques, heavy metals can be solidified and stabilized in dense and durable solid matrices, reducing their permeability and restricting their release into the environment. Industrial by-products like red mud (RM), soda residue (SR), pulverized fly ash (PFA), and alkaline granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) can immobilize heavy metal ions such as lead, zinc, cadmium, copper, and chromium by precipitation. However, in a strong alkali environment, certain heavy metal ions might dissolve again. To address this, immobilization in low pH media can be achieved using materials like GGBS, metakaolin (MK), and incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA). Additionally, heavy metals can be also immobilized through the formation of silicate gels and ettringites during pozzolanic reactions by mechanisms such as adsorption, ion exchanges, and encapsulation. It is foreseeable that, in the future, the scientific community will increasingly turn towards multidisciplinary studies on novel materials, also after an evaluation of the effects on long-term heavy metal stabilization. Weeds cause significant agricultural losses worldwide, and herbicides have traditionally been the main solution to this problem. However, the extensive use of herbicides has led to multiple cases of weed resistance, which could generate an increase in the application concentration and consequently a higher persistence in the environment, hindering natural degradation processes. Consequently, more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as microbial bioherbicides, have been sought. Although these bioherbicides are promising, their efficacy remains a challenge, as evidenced by their limited commercial and industrial production. This article reviews the current status of microbial-based bioherbicides and highlights the potential of cell-free metabolites to improve their efficacy and commercial attractiveness. Stirred tank bioreactors are identified as the most widely used for production-scale submerged fermentation. In addition, the use of alternative carbon and nitrogen sources, such as industrial waste, supports the circular economy. Furthermore, this article discusses the optimization of downstream processes using bioprospecting and in silico technologies to identify target metabolites, which leads to more precise and efficient production strategies. Bacterial bioherbicides, particularly those derived from Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas, and fungal bioherbicides from genera such as Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Trichoderma and Phoma, show significant potential. Nevertheless, limitations such as their restricted range of action, their persistence in the environment, and regulatory issues restrict their commercial availability. The utilization of cell-free microbial metabolites is proposed as a promising solution due to their simpler handling and application. In addition, modern technologies, including encapsulation and integrated management with chemical herbicides, are investigated to enhance the efficacy and sustainability of bioherbicides. Featured Application: Elimination of Emerging Pollutants (pesticides) present in effluents from industrial wastewater treatment plants. Emerging pollutants in wastewater pose significant risks to human health and wildlife, particularly due to their persistence in treated effluents from WWTPs. Very recent research has focused on developing new techniques based on advanced oxidation processes using inorganic and organic photocatalysts for treating polluted effluents under visible light. This study investigates a pesticide-removal system utilizing heterogeneous photoactive polymeric materials P2, P3, and P4. These materials, engineered as hydrophilic polymeric microparticles and functionalized with Rose Bengal, have demonstrated efficient singlet oxygen generation and first-order kinetics in the degradation of AHMPD, a pyrimidine fungicide. Given that most studies in the literature have concentrated on urban WWTPs, with less emphasis on industrial wastewater treatment, this research focused on real water samples from the effluent of an industrial WWTP in the agri-food sector, which processes large volumes of citrus and where high concentrations of AHMPD and other pesticides were detected at certain times of the year. The degradation potential of photoactive materials P3 and P4 was evaluated, achieving removal rates of AHMPD up to 85% under conditions of pH = 11 with 48 h of exposure to visible light. While several researchers have investigated the anaerobic digestion (AD) of textile wastewater for dye degradation, their studies suffer from lower biogas productivity due to substrate inhibition and the occurrence of secondary pollution from digestate disposal. Hence, this study focuses on using the extract of wheat straw (WS) as a co-substrate to facilitate the dye AD process, followed by recycling the digestate sludge for biochar production. In the first study, the batch digesters were operated at different dye wastewater (DW)/WS ratios (0–50% v/v), substrate-to-inoculum ratio of 0.28–0.50 g/g, pH 7.0 ± 0.2, and 37 °C. The digester operated at a DW/WS fraction of 65/35% (v/v) showed the best chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 68.52 ± 3.40% with bio-CH4 of 270.52 ± 19.14 mL/g CODremoved. About 52.96 ± 3.61% of the initial COD mass was converted to CH4, avoiding inhibition caused by volatile fatty acid (VFA) accumulation. In the second experiment, the dry digestate was thermally treated at 550 °C for 2 h under an oxygen-deprived condition, yielding 0.613 ± 0.031 g biochar/g. This biochar exhibited multiple functional groups, mineral contents, and high stability (O/C = 0.193). The combined digestion/pyrolysis scenario treating 35 m3/d (106.75 kg COD/d) could maintain profits from pollution reduction, biogas, biochar, and carbon trading, obtaining a 6.5-year payback period. Microplastic fibre (MPF) pollution is a pressing concern that demands urgent attention. These tiny synthetic textile fibres can be found in various ecosystems, including water and air, and pose significant environmental risks. Despite their size (less than 5 mm), they can harm aquatic and terrestrial organisms and human health. Studies have demonstrated that these imperceptible pollutants can contaminate marine environments, thereby putting marine life at risk through ingestion and entanglement. Additionally, microplastic fibres can absorb toxins from the surrounding water, heightening their danger when consumed by aquatic organisms. Traces of MPFs have been identified in human food chains and organs. To effectively combat MPF pollution, it is crucial to understand how these fibres enter ecosystems and their sources. Primary sources include domestic laundry, where synthetic textile fibres are released into wastewater during washing. Other significant sources include industrial effluents, breakdown of plastic materials, and atmospheric deposition. Additionally, MPFs can be directly released into the environment by improperly disposing of consumer products containing these fibres, such as non-woven hygienic products. A comprehensive approach is necessary to address this pressing issue, including understanding the sources, pathways, and potential risks of MPFs. Immediate action is required to manage contamination and mitigate MPF pollution. This review paper provides a systematic literature analysis to help stakeholders prioritise efforts towards reducing MPFs. The key knowledge gaps identified include a lack of information regarding non-standardised test methodology and reporting units, and a lack of information on manufacturing processes and products, to increase understanding of life cycle impacts and real hotspots. Stakeholders urgently need collaborative efforts to address the systematic changes required to tackle this issue and address the proposed opportunities, including targeted government interventions and viable strategies for the industry sector to lead action. In the context of sustainability, the integration of renewable energy into industrial processes not only minimizes dependence on fossil fuels but also contributes to the efficient management of industrial waste. By transforming organic waste, including agri-food and urban waste, into biogas, green energy can be generated, thus reducing the impact on the environment and closing the loop of material used in the economic circuit. Thus, a sustainable system can be promoted, where resources are continuously reused and exploited. Statistical methods and a decision tree with the Classification and Regression Trees (CRT) algorithm were employed to analyze data. The paper focuses on the importance of industrial waste and biogas for the generation, transformation, and consumption of energy in the EU (European Union)-27 countries. To provide a thorough analysis, we have divided these countries based on real gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, grouping them above/below the annual average for the period 2012–2021/2022. Descriptive statistics revealed observable differences between the two groups, but the paper aimed to provide evidence regarding the existence of these differences as statistically significant. Using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, the non-normal distribution of the data was confirmed, requiring non-parametric inferential methods. The Mann–Whitney U test revealed statistically significant differences between the two groups for all the studied variables. The main concept involved in this study explains the theme of complex t-intuitionistic fuzzy graphs (CTIFGs), which act as a powerful tool in analyzing and displaying the relationships among various applications that are difficult to recognize. The manuscript also demonstrates the capability of CTIFGs to create complex associations with multiple domains when considering a physical situation. Following this, the basic set of operations for CTIFGs is projected. The ideas on isomorphism and homomorphism of the CTIFGs are also presented. Moreover, the manuscript describes the importance of the above-mentioned technique in an effective way, giving a solution to the practical application associated with rubber processing industrial wastewater. The contributing factors and corresponding interdependencies are considered when calibrating the complex nature of industrial wastewater associated with the CTIFGs. The results highlight the adaptability and possible efficiencies of CTIFGs, which act as a decision-making tool and also indicate their importance for policy planners in important societal issues. In recent years, technical processes for the sequestration of CO2 through industrial waste mineral carbonation have been explored and developed. There is a large portfolio of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) techniques that have been employed in laboratories and at pilot scale. These include geological storage, ocean storage, and mineralisation by carbonate ores. In view of this, the main purpose of this research was to investigate and explore chemical variables, particularly ammonium salts as lixiviants for calcium mineral extraction from iron-making slag. The slag in use was acquired from a steel mill in the Vaal Triangle Region in Gauteng, South Africa. The experimental test work was conducted using different ammonium lixiviants, namely, NH4NO3, NH4Cl, and CH3COONH4, to understand the influence of anion type as well as possible differences in mechanisms of interactions. Lixiviant concentration as well as reaction time were varied in this research study. The three selected ammonium-based lixiviants showed different extents of calcium extraction owing to differences in the anion groups. NH4NO3, NH4Cl, and CH3COONH4 were found to be capable of dissolving 50% to 80% of the calcium from the selected slag for different molar concentrations. Anion type and leaching time also had significant influences on the leaching of calcium from the slag. Rapid pH degradation resulted in better calcium extraction capabilities. This work has shown that the selected ammonium salts have the potential to be lixiviants for calcium dissolution from iron-making blast furnace slags. The South Korean government has implemented an acceptance system to promote the high-quality recycling of waste. Industrial waste generators must provide "hazardous characteristics data" to recycling operators. Nonetheless, ~80% of industrial safety accidents in South Korea occur during recycling, most involving fire or explosions. Moreover, a gap in safety management exists during 'Circular Resource' acceptance if the target substance is not regarded as waste. In this study collected data on hazardous waste characteristics. From 62 waste generators, 72 waste samples were collected, accounting for most of the resources accepted for recycling, including waste synthetic polymers, slag, dust, waste sand, and waste foundry sand. Then, the hazardous characteristics, as stated in the Ministry of Environment notifications, were assessed. Leaching toxicity was detected in one slag sample and six dust samples. The Cd, Cu, As, Pb, Zn, Ni, Hg, F, and CN levels dissatisfied the Soil Contamination Warning Standard in 31 samples. Explosivity was not detected in any sample, whereas flammability was detected in one waste synthetic polymer sample. The results revealed 15 cases of potential flammability. Flammability is legally defined as below the criteria if the combustion speed criterion is not met. However, in the case of flame ignition, which could cause large fires and safety accidents, the relevant notification should be revised. In this study, we aimed to improve the gap between the hazardous waste management systems and industrial fields through actual measurements of hazardous characteristics. By doing so, we seek to contribute to the prevention of environmental and safety accidents. By continuously accumulating data and utilizing actual measurements, we aim to revise and enhance relevant regulations, ultimately improving the hazardous characteristics of waste management systems. This article presents the results of research on the development of chemically resistant polymer–mineral casting composites based on industrial waste. The aim of this work is to develop a technological basis for obtaining effective inorganic fillers and highly filled composites for use in chlorine-containing environments. On the basis of theoretical data, mineral fillers and a polymer binder for filling composites were selected, optimal quantities of input hardeners and an appropriate thermal curing mode were determined, and the influence of the filling degree on the properties of composites was studied. The influence of various factors on the properties of the obtained composites was also studied, and the possibility of using local raw materials to obtain special-purpose composites was investigated. Ash from a thermal power plant (TPP) was used as an acid-resistant filler in composites. Two components were chosen as binders: phenol formaldehyde resin and mineral filler (TPP ash). As the third component, hydrolytically active fillers—anhydrite, phosphogypsum and phosphate slag—were used. The degree of filling has a significant influence on the properties of composites, including the compressive strength, chemical resistance and degree of curing, the values of which were elucidated across a wide range of composite variations based on the degree of filling. The conducted research allowed us to establish the limit of admissible anhydrite content, which should not exceed 15 mas.%. To optimize the chemical resistance and durability of the composites of the investigated substances, the method of mathematical planning was used. According to the results of this study, the optimal compositions of composites, in terms of anhydrite, phosphogypsum and phosphorus slag contents, were selected. The possibility of producing cement clinker using low-energy, resource-saving technologies is studied. The composition of industrial waste for low-energy-intensive production of Portland cement clinker at factories in Southern Kazakhstan is analyzed. The possibility of replacing the deficient iron-containing corrective additive with "Waelz clinker for zinc ores" is shown. "Waeltz clinker from zinc ores" as part of the raw material charge performs several tasks: it is a ferrous corrective additive, works as a mineralizer for clinker formation processes, introduces coal into the charge and allows one to reduce the consumption of natural fuel. The processes of burning raw mixtures, wholly or partially consisting of industrial waste, are completed at 1350 °C. This reduces the consumption of main burner fuel for clinker burning and reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. High-quality cement clinker is obtained based on raw material mixtures with Waeltz clinker from zinc ores from the Achisai Metallurgical Plant, phosphorus slag, coal mining waste from Lenger mines and sodium fluoride. The phase composition and microstructure of low-energy clinkers are revealed. Involving industrial waste in raw material circulation will reduce environmental pollution and improve the environment. The emergence of 2D materials has significantly expanded the wide range of nanomaterials with diverse applications. Notably, their high conductivity, catalytic efficiency, and hydrophobicity have fueled heightened research interests for water treatment applications. This research aimed to investigate the synthesis and characterization of MXene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites with silver nanoparticles (Ag) for enhanced catalytic activity in the decomposition of Direct Blue-24 dye. In this study, we employed well-established methods, previously documented in the literature, to prepare two distinct nanocomposites. Novel nanocomposites, namely reduced graphene oxide–silver nanoparticles (rGO–Ag) and MXene–silver nanoparticles (MXene–Ag), were synthesized using the hydrothermal and direct reduction method with an ammoniacal solution (aqueous solution). Comprehensive characterization using advanced tools revealed that the introduced Ag particles integrated seamlessly onto the parent nanofilms of the Carbon derivatives, forming a secondary phase with enhanced catalytic functionality. These nanocomposites demonstrated significant improvements in the catalytic decomposition reactions in simulated wastewater. Verification involved the reduction reaction of Direct Blue-24 dye at known nanocomposite concentrations. The results indicated that MXene–Ag exhibited a superior catalytic activity of 98% in 10 min compared to the rGO–Ag nanocomposite films, which achieved 96% in 35 min. The results indicated that MXene–Ag nanocomposites exhibited a 20–25% increase in catalytic efficiency compared to the rGO–Ag nanocomposites. The outcomes of this research hold promise for practical applications in textile wastewater management and various industrial sectors dealing with mutagenic and carcinogenic chemicals containing azo and/or phthalocyanine products. A steam jet mill (SJM), which employs industrial waste heat steam as a gas source, is a widely utilized apparatus for the pulverization of fly ash. To achieve elevated single-machine grinding capacity, efficiency improvement research based on structural optimization should be conducted. In this study, numerical simulations and industrial experiments are carried out on SJMs equipped with three and six nozzles (hereinafter referred to as N3 and N6, respectively) to study the influence of nozzle quantity on the flow field and grinding efficiency. The numerical simulation results indicate that, under the N3 structure, particles can achieve a higher impact velocity in the comminution area and improve the kinetic energy of a single impact. In the conveying area, the airflow diffusion is better, resulting in an upward flow field that is more uniform. The classification area shows an increase in the uniformity of the flow field and a significant reduction in the local vortex structure, which is beneficial for accurate particle classification. In the interim, industrial experiments demonstrate that the N3 structure can markedly enhance the processing capacity and energy efficiency of the system. The use of biobased substances derived from industrial and household waste as renewable raw materials for environmental applications is gaining prominence due to its sustainable and cost-effective approach to waste valorisation. Herein, we report the uptake of paraquat, a widely used pesticide, by magnetite nanoparticles coated with composted urban biowaste-derived substances (MNP-BBS). The magnetic nanoparticles were prepared using a modified co-precipitation method, and were characterized through various physicochemical techniques. They were tested as an adsorbent for paraquat removal under diverse experimental conditions, exploring the influence of pH (3–10), MNP-BBS dosages (200–1000 mg L−1), ionic strength (0–0.01 M), and presence of organic matter. The kinetic study revealed that the adsorption of paraquat onto MNP-BBS follows the pseudo-second-order model, reaching the adsorption equilibrium after 2 h of contact and 90% of paraquat removal in the best condition tested (1000 mg L−1). The equilibrium experimental data showed a high adsorption performance with a good fitting to the Freundlich isotherm model. Also, from Langmuir model a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.085 mmol g−1 was estimated. The results indicated that electrostatic interaction between the negative functional groups of the adsorbent and the paraquat play a major role in the adsorption mechanism, although the contribution of π-π and hydrophobic interactions cannot be completely ruled out. This research underscores the potential of utilizing MNP-BBS as an effective adsorbent for the removal of paraquat, shedding light on its application in sustainable water purification processes. Seawater contamination is a global challenge due to its hazardous effects on marine organisms and human health. Twenty-three surface seawater samples were collected from the Al Lith intertidal area along the Saudi Red Sea coast to evaluate the ecological risks and document the potential sources of Cr, Cd, Fe, Zn, and Pb. Contamination factor (CF), contamination degree (Cd), water quality index (WQI), and heavy metal pollution index (HPI), as well as multivariate tools were applied. The average concentrations of HMs (μg/L) had the following order: Zn (6.616) > Pb (0.284) > Cd and Cr (0.268) > Fe (0.197). CF results showed moderate contamination of seawater with Cd and low contamination of Cr, Fe, Zn, and Pb. However, 26.09% of the samples showed considerable contamination with Cd. Average Cd values revealed low contamination with HMs, while 17.39% of the samples showed moderate contamination. HPI average values indicated medium pollution of Al Lith seawater, while 13 samples reported high pollution. The higher HPI values were reported in samples characterized by higher concentrations of HMs, particularly Cd and Zn. Correlation matrix and principal component analysis suggested anthropogenic sources for Pb and Zn, mostly from industrial and agricultural effluents, landfilling, and domestic wastewater, apart from their natural sources. Monitoring and measuring pharmaceutical pollutants in environmental samples is a vital and complex task due to their potential detrimental effects on human health, even at low levels. Using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), it was possible to separate and measure three commonly used antipsychotic drugs, chlorpromazine (CPZ), haloperidol (HAL), and risperidone (RIS), in wastewater of the pharmaceutical industry. The technique of solid-phase extraction (SPE) was developed and implemented as a very effective method for preparing samples prior to analysis. The settings of the capillary electrophoretic and chromatographic techniques were adjusted to obtain the most efficient separation profile for the medications being studied. The concentration of all the medicines being investigated ranged from 0.5 to 50 µg/mL. SPE was used to treat real wastewater samples after a thorough validation process that followed the rules set by ICH-Q2B. The developed assays were then effectively employed to identify the tested antipsychotic substances in the real wastewater samples. This research is aimed at studying the properties of polymer anticorrosion coatings based on ED-20 resin widely used in practice and industrial wastes. In this work, three basic types of nanoscale nanofillers were chosen: dispersed particles—microsilica, microspheres obtained at Kazakh enterprises, and carbon nanotubes. Physicochemical research methods were used in the research: a laser analyzer for studying the dispersibility of industrial waste and spectrometric research methods. The properties of materials were investigated by standardized methods. The obtained results show that the introduction of microsilica and microspheres obtained at Kazakhstani enterprises, used as additives, improves both the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy composites compared to the standard (control) material. The results of experiments have shown that the optimal content of additives of microsilica and microspheres provides an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy composites in comparison with the standard (control) material. Studies have shown that the introduction of microspheres into ED-20 polymer increases impact toughness. The introduction of microsilica into the matrix contributes to the increase of elastic modulus. Experimental studies of optical properties of samples of carbon composite polymer films based on polystyrene (PS) with additives of carbon nanotubes C60 and C70 and multilayer carbon nanotubes were also carried out. The experimental results obtained for the optical properties of polymer composites based on basic polymers from solid waste and carbon nanotubes showed that the optical properties of polymer composites undergo noticeable changes. Ethanol possesses high economic value, but as an industrial waste, it poses harm to human health and the environment. The paper describes the preparation of a thermoplastic polyurethane-poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) (TPU-PNIPAM) copolymer designed to selectively uptake alcohol in aqueous solution. The material was created by bonding TPU and PNIPAM together through intermolecular hydrogen bonds, enhancing its hydrophobic properties and making it easier to interact with alcohol molecules. As the amount of PNIPAM in TPU increases, the number of hydrophobic isopropyl groups in TPU-PNIPAM also increases, leading to an enhanced selective uptake ability of TPU-PNIPAM for alcohols in aqueous solution. When the temperature reaches 55 °C, the hydrophobic groups in TPU-PNIPAM are more exposed, further enhancing the selective uptake ability of TPU-PNIPAM for alcohols in aqueous solution. TPU-PNIPAM demonstrates selective preferential uptake for various concentrations and types of alcohol in aqueous solutions. The material's selective uptake performance for alcohols increases with their hydrophobicity, so TPU-PNIPAM exhibited the best adsorption performance for a 10 wt% n-propanol solution under the combined effect of steric hindrance. In addition, TPU-PNIPAM exhibited selective adsorption for other organic solvents, which demonstrated the universality of TPU-PNIPAM in removing contaminants from aqueous solutions.
