To avoid rejection of the new kidney by the immune system, transplant recipients remain on lifelong immunosuppressant therapy. This life-saving medication, however, can put transplant patients at risk of cancer, infections and other diseases. In this article, Aikaterini Nikolopoulou and Philip Mason give an overview of the complications that transplant patients may encounter due to immunosuppression.
