The aim of the paper is to present the phenomenon of the division of sociology into subdisciplines, using the sociology of the body and the sociology of sport as examples, and to show the possibility of mutual inspirations between the achievements of the two subdisciplines. The starting point of the analyses is the critique of the major theoretical projects of Robert Merton and his postulate of building a middle-range theory. The analyses refer also to Talcott Parsons’ idea of specialisation. The analytical concepts referred to include Nicolas Mullins’ notion of four stages of the formation of new scientific disciplines (the normal stage, the network stage, the cluster stage and the stage of the formation of a new speciality/subdiscipline or discipline) and the typology of sociological subdisciplines proposed by Jakub Ryszard Stempień. The text also presents the characteristics of the two subdisciplines in question, the institutional context in which they operate, the preferred theoretical approaches, the peculiarities of the methodology used and the ethical issues involved in practising each subdiscipline. An example of this cooperation is the national scientific conference “Sociology of the Body and Sociology of Sport. The state of research and mutual inspiration”. The article presents the conclusions of this event, including the possibility of going beyond the framework of subdisciplines, as well as the advantages of adopting a non-subdisciplinary and general sociological perspective.

In the article the author’s own theoretical view, intended to describe the specificity and condition of contemporary society, is presented. The approach discussed in the paper refers to the functionalist tradition in sociology, emphasizing the systemic nature of such social entities as society. At the same time, the conventional premise of functionalism regarding the cohesive nature of social systems is rejected here. Accordingly, the theoretical approach proposed is called social disintegration theory. Six theorems of this theory are introduced and discussed in the paper.

The article concerns the unequal position of men and women in chess. This inequality is currently manifested in the male-dominated population of chess players, gender determined differences in the game level attained, and financial discrimination. Historical analysis shows that over the centuries chess has been regarded as a pastime suitable for both men and women. It was only the process of institutionalization of chess as a sport (and turning it into serious leisure activity, in R. Stebbins’ typology), which took place in the era of industrial society, that discrimination against women in chess came about. The emancipatory activities of women in this field, dating back to the second half of the 19th century, were commented on in the chess press in two ways, which are referred to in the text as the “Steinitz narrative” and the “de Coubertin narrative”. Both of these perspectives have remained resilient to this day, accompanying the progress in equalizing the position of men and women in chess that were seen in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The article addresses the issue of the unique position of football among sports, which supports Bromberger’s thesis on the footballisation of society. As an overview of publications shows, football has occupied a special place in the international sociology of sport over the last 30 years; studies of football have been among the twenty most popular topics within the sub-discipline. However, it would be unjustified to speak of the footballisation of the international sociology of sport, understood as the overrepresentation of football in this sub-discipline. The situation is different when it comes to the Polish sociology of sport, where up to 50% of publications in the first fifteen years of the 21st century tackled various football-related issues. In conclusion, theses concerning possible consequences of the footballisation of the Polish sociology of sport are presented, including the type I and type II errors.

The article concerns the medical sociology of and the sport sociology in Poland. Despite some similarities (cooperation with institutional fields outside the humanities, partial sharing of the subject of interest and dealing with various dysfunctions in this area, the applicative nature of their research and analysis, emergence at a similar time), an important difference can be noticed in the academic functioning of both sub-disciplines, including their attractiveness for subsequent generations of sociology students. The purpose of the article is to identify the reasons for this situation. The global conditions analysed by the author include greater interest of the classic authors of sociology in the discussion of medicine rather than sport, the depreciation of sport as a subject of sociological reflection, as well as a different level of prestige of the disciplines with which the specific sociologies cooperate. Among the national determinants of the relatively weaker academic establishment of the sport sociology is the fact that – in contrast to the medical sociology – it developed in a certain isolation from the general sociological milieu, and did not manage to avoid ideological entanglements.

Artykuł przedstawia wyniki analizy porównawczej polskich i zagranicznych doświadczeń związanych ze zjawiskiem mody na bieganie. Zestawienie obejmuje historię biegowego boomu w Polsce i na świecie. Rozpatrywana jest także kwestia struktury populacji biegaczy-amatorów, ideologicznego tła dla mody na bieganie (healthism), a także poziomu sportowego prezentowanego na otwartych dla amatorów zawodach maratońskich. Podstawę wnioskowania stanowi kwerenda dostępnych opracowań i statystyk. Drugim źródłem informacji są dane ilościowe odnoszące się do wybranych sześciu maratonów, stanowiących – pod względem liczby uczestników, renomy i poziomu organizacyjnego – czołówkę tego typu przedsięwzięć na świecie. Jako porównawczy jest traktowany materiał odnoszący się do pięciu imprez biegowych zaliczanych do tzw. Korony Maratonów Polskich. Pomimo różnic w historii biegowego boomu oraz w strukturze wiekowej i płciowej populacji biegaczy-amatorów, odnotować należy istotne podobieństwa, które dotyczą zwłaszcza ideologicznych źródeł mody na bieganie oraz klasowej przynależności biegaczy długodystansowców.

W artykule zostały przedstawione wyniki badania własnego dotyczącego działalności stowarzyszeń biegaczy-amatorów (tzw. klubów biegacza) w Polsce. Badanie zostało wykonane z wykorzystaniem analizy danych zastanych on-line (ang. desk research), obejmując 99 zidentyfikowanych organizacji tego typu. Pomiar uwzględniał aktywność badanych podmiotów w 2014 i 2015 roku. Zebrane dane dotyczą lokalizacji (województwo, wielkość miejscowości), liczby członków oraz rodzajów działań podejmowanych przez kluby biegacza, w układzie ich współpracy z jednostkami samorządu terytorialnego, innymi organizacjami pozarządowymi oraz firmami komercyjnymi. Uzyskane wyniki mogą być interpretowane w perspektywie teorii kapitału społecznego, w ujęciu proponowanym przez Roberta D. Putnama.

Artykuł dotyczy współczesnego fenomenu polskiej mody na bieganie. Zaproponowana jest tu próba syntetycznego opisu sekwencji przemian stosunku biegaczy-amatorów do swojego ciała w toku kariery biegowej. Zebrany materiał empiryczny (badania własne oraz przegląd dostępnej literatury) wskazuje, że u źródeł „przygody z bieganiem” leży troska o własne ciało i chęć zadbania o zdrowie. W miarę postępów treningu biegowego pierwotna prozdrowotna motywacja często ustępuje jednak motywacji sportowej. Pojawiająca się potrzeba testowania możliwości własnego ciała – w konfrontacji z innymi zawodnikami-amatorami oraz własnymi wcześniejszymi rekordami życiowymi – może być opisywana w kategoriach filozofii nietzscheańskiej. W artykule wykorzystywane są m.in. wyniki własnych badań ankietowych, wykonanych wśród uczestników DOZ Maraton Łódź z PZU. Prezentowane wyniki są syntetyzowane w postaci sekwencyjnego ujęcia przemian stosunku biegaczy-amatorów do własnego ciała.
