Purpose: Our objective was to evaluate the diagnostic value of a handheld pupillometer in differentiating eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) from healthy controls., Methods: This population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in the province of Eskisehir, Turkey. Subjects 40 years of age and older were randomly recruited using stratified two-stage cluster sampling from the database of the Turkish Statistical Institute office in Eskisehir. Recruitment took place between June and October 2014. The inclusion criteria were healthy subjects who did not have a previous diagnosis of glaucoma or other issues affecting pupil dynamics. After an extensive ophthalmic examination, pupillometry was performed under standard photopic room lighting conditions. After pupillometry, the pupil was dilated and digital images of the anterior segment were taken for confirmation of PXS. An inter-eye pupil diameter difference of ≥0.4 mm was defined as pupil asymmetry., Results: Of the 2356 invited subjects, 2017 agreed to participate (85.6%), and 1559 subjects were eligible for the study. An age-matched subgroup consisting of 529 healthy controls was randomly selected to compare with the 60 subjects who were diagnosed with PXS. The mean pupil diameters of subjects with PXS and healthy controls were 3.57 ± 0.68 mm and 3.68 ± 0.63 mm, respectively (P = .652). In the ROC analysis, the precision of pupil diameter in discriminating PXS was low (AUC 0.56, sensitivity 14%, specificity 94%). Pupil asymmetry increased the chances of having PXS by 3.46-fold., Conclusions: Pupillometry performed poorly in the detection of PXS scoring a positive predictive value of 26%.

The purpose of this study was to examine the menstruation and dysmenorrhea characteristics and the factors affecting dysmenorrhea of health school students, and the knowledge and use of the methods of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) on the part of those students with dysmenorrhea. This is a descriptive study. A descriptive analysis was made by calculating the number, percentage, mean, Pearson χ, and logistic regression analysis. A total of 488 female students participated in the research and 87.7% (n = 428) of all students experienced dysmenorrhea. It was detected that a family history of dysmenorrhea and regular menstrual cycles of the students were dysmenorrhea-affecting factors (P < .05). Seven of 10 students with dysmenorrhea used CAM methods. Heat application of CAM methods for dysmenorrhea management was the most commonly used and also known by the students. The students who experienced severe pain used analgesics (P < .05) and CAM methods (P < .05).

Objective: To provide information about the effect of autonomic dysfunction on P-wave dispersion, as a predictor of atrial fibrillation, in patients with spinal cord injury., Design: Thirty patients with chronic traumatic spinal cord injury and 27 healthy controls were included in this study. The initial assessment of the patients included routine physical examination and evaluation of 12-lead electrocardiography. In the patient group, blood pressure and electrocardiography recordings were obtained during urodynamic assessment. The measurements of the P-wave duration were performed manually by two blinded investigators. P-wave dispersion was calculated as the difference between maximum P-wave duration and minimum P-wave duration. P-wave dispersion values of resting electrocardiography recordings in control and study groups were compared. In the patient group, subgroup analyses were also performed according to the injury level and severity and existence of autonomic dysfunction in examinations., Results: P-wave dispersion values were greater in patients with spinal cord injury than in healthy controls. There was statistically significant difference between P-wave dispersion values of the patients with and without autonomic dysfunction. P-wave dispersion values at initial sensation of vesical filling were greater than those of the resting state in the patients without autonomic dysfunction., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that P-wave dispersion increases significantly in chronic spinal cord injured patients with autonomic dysfunction. This finding suggests a tendency for atrial fibrillation occurrence in patients with spinal cord injury, which may cause further cerebrovascular complications in this special subset of patients by creating a thromboembolic milieu.
