J Strength Cond Res 36(5): 1290–1296, 2022—The purpose of this study was to examine energy cost of body weight resistance exercises with slow movement in young men using a multistage exercise test. Fifteen men aged 21–29 years performed 3 exercises (heel-raise, squat, and push-up) at different frequencies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 repetitions·min−1). Oxygen consumption was measured using indirect calorimetry; we then computed a simple linear regression between aerobic energy expenditure (EE) and repetition frequency. The slope coefficient in the regression represents the energy cost of those exercises; we compared the extrapolated EE for a frequency of 10 repetitions·min−1. Gross EE increased linearly with repetition frequency in all subjects (y = a x + b). Energy cost was significantly greater in the case of the push-up than in the case of the squat {squat: 0.50 ± 0.14 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.42–0.58); push-up: 0.77 ± 0.20 kcal (95% CI, 0.66–0.88); and the heel-raise elicited the lowest energy cost: 0.13 ± 0.04 kcal (95% CI, 0.11–0.15)}. Extrapolated EE at 10 repetitions·min−1 was 2.7 ± 0.5 kcal (2.3 metabolic equivalents [METs]), 6.3 ± 1.4 kcal (5.4 METs), and 9.2 ± 2.1 kcal (7.8 METs), respectively, according to the regression based on aerobic EE. J Strength Cond Res 34(5): 1274-1284, 2020-Hyperventilation (HV)-induced alkalosis, an ergogenic strategy, improved repeated pedaling sprint performance through enhanced H+ removal. However, it did not confer beneficial effects on other forms of exercises. This study investigated the benefits of HV-aided recovery on lifting repetitions and joint velocity during resistance training involving multiple joints and both concentric and eccentric contractions. Eleven power-trained men (mean ± SD age: 22.5 ± 4.3 years, training experience: 8.3±3.6 years) performed 6 sets each of bench press and leg press at 80% 1 repetition maximum. Each set was continued until failure, with a 5-minute recovery between sets. In protocol A, HV was implemented for 30 seconds before the first, third, and fifth sets of each exercise (HV-aided recovery), whereas spontaneous breathing continued throughout the recovery before the second, fourth, and sixth sets (control recovery). In protocol B, the order of the HV and control recoveries was reversed. For both protocols, reductions in repetitions (range: −4.7% to −22.5%) and velocity (range: −23.1% to −37.7%) were consistently observed after control recovery (p <0.05), whereas HV-aided recovery resulted in increased repetitions (range: +21.3% to +55.7%) and velocity (range: +6.3% to +15.3%) (p<0.05) or no reductions in these measures from the previous set. The total repetitions performed across 6 sets (protocols A and B combined) were greater after the HV-aided than control recovery (p ⩽ 0.001) in bench press (44±10 vs. 36±10 reps, increased by 27.1±24.1%) and leg press (64±9 vs. 50±15 reps, increased by 35.2 ± 29.5%). The article reports on research conducted to examine the recovery of static and dynamic muscle performance after eccentric damage with and without repeated exercise, using different exercise modes between exercise bouts. Researchers evaluated 12 athletes who performed dumbbell exercises. They found that resistance training, including dumbbell exercises, may be continued after eccentric damage and that a delay in recovery onset may occur depending on which training method is used.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether duration of static stretching could affect the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC).Volunteer male subjects (n = 10) underwent 2 different durations of static stretching of their hamstring muscles in the dominant leg: 30 and 60 seconds. No static stretching condition was used as a control condition. Before and after each stretching trial, hamstring flexibility was measured by a sit and reach test. MVC was then measured using the maximal effort of knee flexion. The hamstring flexibility was significantly increased by 30 and 60 seconds of static stretching (control: 0.5 ± 1.1 cm; 30 seconds: 2.1 ± 1.8 cm; 60 seconds: 3.0 ± 1.6 cm); however, there was no significant difference between 30 and 60 seconds of static stretching conditions. The MVC was significantly lowered with 60 seconds of static stretching compared to the control and 30 seconds of the stretching conditions (control: 287.6 ± 24.0 N; 30 seconds: 281.8 ± 24.2 N; 60 seconds: 262.4 ± 36.2 N). However, there was no significant difference between control and 30 seconds of static stretching conditions. Purpose: We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that type I collagen plays a role in increasing bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle stiffness, leading to low and high risks of fatigue fracture and muscle injury, respectively, in athletes. As a potential mechanism, we focused on the effect of the type I collagen alpha 1 chain gene (COL1A1) variant associated with transcriptional activity on bone and skeletal muscle properties., Methods: The association between COL1A1 rs1107946 and fatigue fracture/muscle injury was evaluated in Japanese athletes. Effects of the polymorphism on tissue properties (BMD and muscle stiffness) and type I collagen α1/α2 chain ratios in muscles were examined in Japanese nonathletes., Results: The C-allele carrier frequency was greater in female athletes with fatigue fracture than in those without (odds ratio = 2.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.17-5.77) and lower in female athletes with muscle injury than in those without (odds ratio = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.24-0.91). Prospective validation analysis confirmed that in female athletes, muscle injury was less frequent in C-allele carriers than in AA genotype carriers (multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.08-0.96). Among female nonathletes, the C-allele of rs1107946 was associated with lower BMD and lower muscle stiffness. Muscle biopsy revealed that C-allele carriers tended to have a larger type I collagen α1/α2 chain ratio than AA genotype carriers (2.24 vs 2.05, P = 0.056), suggesting a higher proportion of type I collagen α1 homotrimers., Conclusion: The COL1A1 rs1107946 polymorphism exerts antagonistic effects on fatigue fracture and muscle injury among female athletes by altering the properties of these tissues, potentially owing to increased levels of type I collagen α1 chain homotrimers., (Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). Purpose: Low-load voluntary exercise can induce muscle hypertrophy and strength gain in working muscles when combined with blood flow restriction (BFR). However, it is unknown whether such hypertrophy and strength gain can be induced by involuntary muscle contractions triggered via low-intensity neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) combined with BFR. The purpose of this article was to investigate whether low-intensity NMES combined with BFR (NMES-BFR) could elicit muscle hypertrophy and strength gain in the quadriceps., Methods: Eight untrained young male participants (mean ± SE; age, 26.2 ± 0.7 yr; height, 1.74 ± 0.02 m; body weight, 71.4 ± 4.8 kg) were subjected to 23 min of unilateral low-intensity (5%-10% of maximal voluntary contraction) NMES twice per day (5 d·wk⁻¹) for 2 wk: one leg received NMES-BFR and the other leg received NMES alone. Quadriceps muscle thickness and isometric and isokinetic strength were measured before and every week throughout the training and detraining periods., Results: In NMES-BFR legs, muscle thickness increased after 2 wk of training (+3.9%) and decreased after 2 wk of detraining (-3.0%). NMES-BFR training also increased maximal knee extension strength in isometric (+14.2%) and isokinetic (+7.0% at 90°·s⁻¹ and +8.3% at 180°·s⁻¹) voluntary contractions. In addition, maximal isometric strength decreased (-6.8%), whereas no large fall (-1.9% at 90°·s⁻¹ and -0.6% at 180°·s⁻¹) in isokinetic maximal strength was evident after 2 wk of detraining. In legs that received NMES alone, no prominent change was observed; there was a negligible effect on isometric strength., Conclusion: Low-intensity NMES-BFR induces muscle hypertrophy and strength gain in untrained young male participants.
