Background: An infant's cognitive development is highly dependent on early interactions with its primary caregiver, often its mother. Feeding, a frequent and early exchange between mothers and infants, is an important time for maternal–infant bonding. Mothers with opioid use disorder have been found to be more physically and verbally stimulating and more active during feeds than mothers with no opioid use. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of verbal interactions mothers with opioid use disorder expressed while engaged in a feeding encounter with their infant undergoing treatment for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome to offer insight into maternal experiences and potential challenges of feeding infants experiencing withdrawal. Methods: A qualitative descriptive analysis of maternal verbalizations during the feeding was used in a secondary analysis using the Barnard Model as the theoretical framework for maternal–infant interaction. Results: A theory-driven deductive approach was assumed to organize the identified subthemes within the concepts of the Barnard Model. Mothers frequently commented on hunger, satiation, and stress cues, while providing consolation, praise, and encouragement. Mothers expressed concerns regarding feeding volume and pace, and consequences related to feeding. Implications for Practice and Research: It is crucial that clinicians remember that feeding is an important time for maternal–infant bonding. Further research into the feeding interactions of mother–infant dyads with opioid exposure is warranted. As infants may present with subacute signs of withdrawal, including persistent feeding difficulties for months, further investigation into feeding challenges dyads experience after discharge from the hospital is needed. Background: Childbirth can increase the risk of urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse; however, research indicates postpartum women have limited knowledge of these conditions. Objectives: (1) To determine whether a webinar can improve postpartum women's knowledge related to the structures, functions, muscles, and strengthening of the pelvic floor and (2) to explore changes in perception of postpartum women's understanding of the core/pelvic floor and their role in urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Methods: Women who had given birth within the last year and were older than 19 years were recruited via social media. Women completed a demographic survey, Prolapse and Incontinence Knowledge Questionnaire (PIKQ), and a telephonic interview before and after viewing a 1-time online webinar produced by a Women's Health Physical Therapy (DPT) Resident. Survey data were analyzed via independent t tests. Qualitative data were analyzed via a latent content recurrent cross-sectional analysis. Results: A total of 16 women participated in this study. There were significant improvements in pre- versus postwebinar. Specific to qualitative findings, the main knowledge changes seen from pre- to postwebinar interviews included greater awareness of specific exercises with proper progression and sequencing, improved descriptions of UI and POP, and improved cuing of a Kegel. Conclusion: A pelvic health education webinar can result in improvements in pelvic health knowledge. More research is needed to determine whether this increase in knowledge translates to a greater likelihood to engage in pelvic floor strengthening exercises and ultimately whether it reduces pelvic floor dysfunction. Background: Breastfeeding women struggle to achieve recommendations of obtaining 150 minutes of moderate activity per week or more. Pelvic floor dysfunction may be hindering postpartum physical activity. However, the severity and type of dysfunction remain poorly understood. Objective: This study had the following objectives: (1) to determine the severity of symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction among breastfeeding women, with a secondary objective (1a) to determine whether this varied on the basis of exclusive breastfeeding versus supplementation of solids foods and/or formula and (2) to determine what breastfeeding women perceive they need in a physical activity intervention and (2a) how their activity levels change from before to after pregnancy. Study Design: This was a concurrent embedded mixed-methods cross-sectional survey. Methods: A survey consisting of demographic questions, physical activity experiences, the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20), and open-ended questions was disseminated to currently breastfeeding mothers. Results: Survey findings conclude that breastfeeding women are primarily sedentary or engage in light physical activity and experience greater symptom severity related to urinary incontinence than anal or pelvic organ prolapse distress. Symptoms are not influenced by breastfeeding exclusivity. Many women are hindered from being active by time constraints associated with feeding their infant. Women would like a combination of in-person/online pelvic floor and general exercise resources. Conclusion: A large proportion of breastfeeding women are sedentary or engaging only in light activity. Furthermore, breastfeeding women report urinary incontinence symptoms and these symptoms are not influenced by breastfeeding exclusivity. Background: There has been an increase in infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) over the past several decades. Infants with NAS experience withdrawal as a result of the sudden termination at birth of substance exposure during pregnancy. A serious sign related to infants diagnosed with NAS is poor feeding. The prevalence of NAS urges researchers and clinicians to develop effective strategies and techniques to treat and manage the poor feeding of infants exposed to substances in utero.Purpose: To synthesize current feeding methods and practices used for infants diagnosed with NAS.Methods/search Strategy: PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched for articles published within the last 20 years that focused on feeding practices or feeding schedules, were written in English, were peer-reviewed, and described human studies. The search terms utilized were "neonatal abstinence syndrome" OR "neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome" AND "feeding."Findings/results: Three findings emerged regarding techniques and management of poor feeding in the NAS population. The findings included infants who received mother's own milk had decreased severity and later onset of clinical signs of withdrawal, demand feeding is recommended, and the infant's cues may be helpful to follow when feeding.Implications For Practice: Clinicians should encourage mother's own milk in this population unless contraindications are present. Caregivers and clinicians must be receptive to cues when feeding infants with NAS.Implications For Research: Even with the clinical knowledge and experience that infants with NAS are difficult to feed, there is limited research assessing techniques and schedules that are effective in managing successful feeding. Background: Engaging in physical activity and breastfeeding are 2 of the healthiest behaviors a new mother can participate in, yet a majority of mothers are not achieving physical activity or breastfeeding recommendations. Breastfeeding mothers may experience additional barriers to physical activity; however, more research is needed. Therefore, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the physical activity levels of breastfeeding women as well as to better understand their motivation and barriers for engaging in physical activity. Methods: A total of 633 breastfeeding mothers completed a 30-question survey developed under the constructs of self-determination theory. Results: Findings indicate the majority of breastfeeding mothers are engaging in light activity (eg, walking) regularly; nevertheless, 1 in 5 mothers is predominantly sedentary and only 1 in 20 mothers is engaging in heavy exercise (eg, running) regularly. Furthermore, mothers appear motivated by extrinsic factors related to improving fitness and appearance. Finally, physical discomfort due to breastfeeding and concerns for reduction in milk supply were found to be substantial barriers to physical activity.
