Research has been conducted on AIDS dementia resulting from the mitotic brain cell infection with HIV-1. Results indicate that neurotoxic HIV-1 proteins can induce cultured neorons' apoptosis making these neurons vulnerable to oxidative stress and excitotoxicity and that they can promote calcium overload, mitochondial dysfunction and oxyradical production.
