The book presented to the readers is, in many respects, unconventional and unique. It is one of the first comprehensive pieces of scholarly work in Lithuania to thoroughly analyze complex problems in civilization studies based on comparative research strategies and methods. Its main focus is on the most important non-European and non-Western civilizations, emphasizing their development until a decisive encounter with Europeans in the modern era. Based on the established academic study and the authors' own judgments and choices, the book provides a comparative analysis of the principal civilizations of the western (Mesopotamia, Levant, Iran), eastern (China, Korea, Japan) and southern (India) parts of Asia, Ancient Egypt, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Pre-Columbian Americas and Oceania. It also features a separate examination of the Arab-Muslim and - somewhat controversially and for the first time in Lithuania - the Eurasian nomadic civilizations, both of which combined several of the aforementioned civilizational spaces and had their own global ambitions. The book discusses various external and internal factors that influenced their development and peculiarities, as well as the complex problems of interaction among them. The comparative case study of non-European pre-modern civilizations conducted by the authors confirmed that there are indeed many commonalities of internal structure and development phases, even between the civilizations that seem to differ the most. According to the authors, most of the patterns and processes researched in the book can be described by the arguably fitting concept of "metamorphosis" borrowed from life sciences. The research reveals that most of these "local civilizations" were characterized by ambiguities in their limits, in both the spatial and temporal sense. Part of the reason behind this ambiguity was deeply related to their interactions with one another, since some "civilizational actors" developed on the basis of previous actors in the same areas, while others affected their contemporaries through military conquests, trade patterns, migration and cultural diffusion. Tellingly, such ambiguities often proved to be problematic not only for modern scholars, but for the "actors" themselves, and in order to enforce and legitimize their own position, identity and power, they had to opt for various strategies, with state-building, myth-making, isolationism, and stress on the civilization/barbarian dichotomy being among the most important. The research also demonstrates that the European/Western Christian civilization was not truly idiosyncratic or predominant on the global scale until the early modern era. Even though the book does not contain a separate case study of our own civilization, other comparative analyses affirmed that there had indeed been partially successful attempts to globalize the world and make a push for modernity. In fact, the much lauded "rise of the West" since the Late Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery was only possible because the Europeans came into contact with much earlier scientific achievements and technologies of the Chinese, Indians and Arab-Muslims, were largely spared by the Mongol hordes, and successfully plundered the riches of the New World later on. In addition, the study highlights the unsustainability of the supposedly universal and ideal theoretical model of Western civilization that mirrored the above mentioned success on the ground. Indeed, the case studies of the so-called "marginal" or "undeveloped" civilizations of the Americas, Sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania and the Eurasian nomads particularly showcase the need to reconsider the ideal type of wheel- and iron-based urban civilization, and to appreciate the fascinating artistic, technological and socio-economic developments throughout the parts of the world that were much different in terms of geographical location, ecology, natural resources and other fundamental traits. Finally, the authors' deliberate attention to visual materials prompted them to try to reveal the sheer essence and value of the civilizations studied through the actual artifacts representing them, depicted in numerous illustrations throughout the book. This decision represents their deep conviction that it is precisely the purview of arts and aesthetics that best serves the books ultimate goal of destroying long-standing, often Eurocentric prejudices and providing a less biased, fundamentally humane outlook on the non-European world that has so much to show and teach us all.

Chinese aesthetics is an uncommonly distinctive cultural phenomenon created by the spiritual values of a great civilization. China is where many fundamental ideas formed that determined the main features of Far Eastern aesthetics and art. When we compare the aesthetics of China with that of other great Eastern civilizations, we can distinguish some characteristic features. First of all, Chinese and Indian aesthetic theories are connected by a sustained continuity of ideas determined by equally rich unbroken traditions in the development of spiritual culture. On the other hand, unlike India, where normative aesthetic treatises on poetry and dramatic art are dominant, in China – because of the visual-associative apprehension of reality characteristic of a pictographic culture – aesthetic works on painting and calligraphy stand out. In Korea and Japan aesthetic thought, like the entire culture of these countries, is more sensitive to external influences, experiences more transformations, and more easily adopts innovations. In China, however, we can see the incomparably stronger influence of aesthetic and artistic traditions formed over centuries. The cultural, aesthetic, and artistic strata, movements, themes, and leitmotifs that crystallized in China obeyed, as it were, a law of undulating change. Here, traditionalism, the search for something new, and the constant remining of the cultural lodes of the past always progressed together. The cultural tradition was open, plastic, and dynamic, strong enough to adapt to the needs of the day, and capable of integrating not only new forms, themes, and motifs but also entire socially important strata of spiritual culture. In this way, the cultural, aesthetic, and artistic tradition of the Chinese became, by absorbing new content in every period, ever richer and more multilayered. It was naturally self-regulating. For this reason, meaningful progress in Chinese aesthetics and art primarily demanded that the bearers of this culture achieve self-awareness in tradition, adapt this tradition, and guarantee its further continuity and transmission. The cult of traditionalism dominates Confucian aesthetics. Even those who follow Daoist and Chan aesthetic concepts and outwardly negate traditionalism unconsciously form traditions of their own based on other ideas and ideals. [...]

In the diverse written legacy of the oldest civilizations, an extremely important role is played by sacred and poetic texts, which highlight the beginnings of aesthetic thought. When studying the earliest stage in the formation of aesthetic thought, we must abandon many of the stereotypes familiar to us and proceed to the level of syncretic categories. It is natural that different regions of the world, living under diverse conditions, formed distinctive views of aestheticism. A great push toward the rudimentary development of aesthetic thought was given by the breakdown of primitive social relations and the appearance of the state with its complex system of institutions. The oldest states, which became the main cradles of world civilization, arose in fertile river valleys: along the Nile – Egypt, between the Tigris and the Euphrates – Sumer and Babylonia, between the Indus and the Ganges – the proto-Indian civilizations of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, and along the Yellow River – the Yang-Shao culture. Unlike tribal societies, the appearance of these state organisms was connected with the rise of an official ruler and of influential social classes and with the unification of people not on the basis of kinship, but of territory. These radical social changes provided the impulse for the development of culture and, at the same time, promoted the formation of the beginnings of aesthetic thought. The data relied on today by historians of aesthetics in various countries permits the indisputable assertion that research into the origins of aesthetic thought must begin, contrary to the flawed Eurocentric tradition, not with the comparatively recent antiquity of the Greeks and the Romans, but with the civilizations of the Ancient East. Many of the aesthetic ideas that formed in the East are often attributed to the thought of Western antiquity. India is one of the oldest cradles of world civilization with a long cultural history that encompasses about five thousand years. The cultural values created in this country have left a distinct imprint on human history. When researching the philosophical, aesthetic, and artistic traditions that have formed on the Indian subcontinent, we use the general concept of India to denote not some political formation, but the totality of a multitude of states, of related nations and tribes that have existed for millennia, constantly shifting their territorial boundaries and replacing one another – a totality that created cultural, aesthetic, and artistic values that acquired forms characteristic of the Indian subcontinent. In comparison to the aesthetic traditions of the West, India, like China and Japan, has a more holistic worldview – one that encompasses the totality of a multitude of different principles and in which, in the great torrent of existence, one opposite is inseparable from another. Unlike the Far East, where treatises on aesthetics are usually succinct and metaphorical, limiting themselves to dealing with a few of the most important (as seen by the authors) aesthetic problems, in India they often acquire from the Upaniṣads a tendency toward the abstract speculative treatment of problems. Works on philosophical aesthetics stand out for their elaborate metaphysics and emphatic symbolism, while they avoid the aesthetic intuitivism and metaphoricity characteristic of Chinese and Japanese works. The role of tradition in the history of Chinese aesthetics and art is one of the most wonderful phenomena in the spiritual culture of mankind. The West has long since been dominated by a vulgar attitude that bluntly opposes the “dynamism” of European culture, with its constantly alternating periods of rise and decline, to the “stability” - near stagnation - of Chinese cultural traditions. If we look more closely at how Chinese civilization developed, battered by drastic, apocalyptic historical shocks and disastrous invasions by nomadic peoples, all of which completely interrupted - for a while, at least - the steady development of cultural, aesthetic, and artistic traditions, we can be convinced of the shallowness of these Eurocentric theories. Like dynamic periods of rising spiritual powers, times of stagnation are equally characteristic of the aesthetic and artistic traditions of both Western and Eastern cultures. [...]
