Abstract

A renewed world-wide commitment to immunization is discussed. Each year, there are more than 2.5 million childhood deaths that could have been prevented by vaccination. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) works with groups of countries to help them provide vaccination inexpensively to their populations. A global strategy for immunization is outlined in the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy 2006-20015 (GIVS), created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF). Some new approaches to immunization have begun; for example, as school attendance has increased in many developing nations, doctors have begun immunization at schools. The authors call for more work to implement the suggestions of the GIVS.
