Abstract

The article presents a research study that examined the efficacy and safety of oral rivaroxaban for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after total knee arthroplasty. 3148 patients undergoing knee arthroplasty received either subcutaneous enoxaparin 30 mg every 12 hours, beginning 12-24 hours after surgery, or oral rivaroxaban 10 mg once daily, beginning 6-8 hours after surgery. Oral rivaroxaban, given once daily for 10-14 days, was found to be significantly superior to subcutaneous enoxaparin, given every 12 hours, for the prevention of venous thromboembolism.
