The article provides information on a study which examined bees along a habitat gradient ranging from grasslands to forests in the Indiana Dunes and natural areas in northwest Indiana. Bees were attracted to the colored bowls placed at each site and bowl surveys were conducted once every 25 days. The number of bee species collected increased from April through June before declining in September, while species density, adjusted for sample size differences among months, peaked in June and declined through the rest of the summer. Researchers are advised to consider changes in bee species taxonomy when comparing the bee species list for northwest Indiana to historic lists.
