A study published in the American Journal of Nephrology suggests that inadequate sleep duration is linked to an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study, conducted on a large sample of mid-life and older Chinese adults, found that both short and long sleep duration were associated with a 44% increased risk of incident CKD. However, participants who reported consistent optimal sleep duration (7-9 hours) or supplemented short sleep with daytime napping had a reduced risk of developing CKD. The study also highlights the need for further research on the impact of sleep on kidney health, as well as the potential differences in sleep-related kidney health disparities among different racial and ethnic groups.
