Objectives: To review the performance and utility of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) Yokohama System for Reporting Breast Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) Cytology five category stratification and evaluate the impact of rapid onsite evaluation (ROSE)., Method: A retrospective analysis of breast FNAB cytology cases with matched histopathological results at a single institution over a 32 months period using a structured reporting system with 5 diagnostic categories ("inadequate/insufficient," "benign," "atypical," "suspicious of malignancy" and "malignant") closely paralleling the proposed IAC System., Results: Of 2,696 breast FNAB cases, there were 579 with matched histopathology and 456 of these had ROSE. ROSE decreased the number in the "insufficient" category (17.1% without ROSE to 4.0% with ROSE) and increased the number in the "malignant" (17.9 to 39.0%) with a lesser impact on the "atypical," "benign" and "suspicious of malignancy" categories. The performance data showed a positive predictive value of 96.4%, negative predictive value of 97.6%, and a risk of malignancy of a FNAB categorized as "insufficient" to be 2.6%, "benign" 1.7%, "atypical" 15.7%, "suspicious of malignancy" 84.6%, and "malignant" 99.5%., Conclusion: Breast FNAB is an accurate test enabling effective diagnosis of breast lesions. ROSE improved the performance by decreasing the proportion of "insufficient" and "atypical" and increasing the "suspicious of malignancy" and "malignant" diagnoses and enabling immediate triage for further biopsy where necessary., (© 2019 S. Background/aims: Microelectrode recording (MER) is necessary for precision localization of target structures such as the subthalamic nucleus during deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. Attempts to automate this process have produced quantitative temporal trends (feature activity vs. time) extracted from mobile MER data. Our goal was to evaluate computational methods of generating spatial profiles (feature activity vs. depth) from temporal trends that would decouple automated MER localization from the clinical procedure and enhance functional localization in DBS surgery., Methods: We evaluated two methods of interpolation (standard vs. kernel) that generated spatial profiles from temporal trends. We compared interpolated spatial profiles to true spatial profiles that were calculated with depth windows, using correlation coefficient analysis., Results: Excellent approximation of true spatial profiles is achieved by interpolation. Kernel-interpolated spatial profiles produced superior correlation coefficient values at optimal kernel widths (r = 0.932-0.940) compared to standard interpolation (r = 0.891). The choice of kernel function and kernel width resulted in trade-offs in smoothing and resolution., Conclusions: Interpolation of feature activity to create spatial profiles from temporal trends is accurate and can standardize and facilitate MER functional localization of subcortical structures. Background/aims: This study aimed to determine the clinical and neuroimaging correlates of the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in stroke patients with age-related confluent white matter hyperintensities (WMH)., Methods: The Neuropsychiatric Inventory was utilized to detect the presence of 12 symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify clinical and neuroimaging correlates of the presence of symptoms., Results: Seventy-seven stroke patients (mean WMH volume: 39.5 cm(3)) were recruited. Thirty patients (39%) had ≥ 1 neuropsychiatric symptom. Poor executive function was associated with the presence of any symptoms and symptoms other than depression. More severe left frontal WMH was associated with depression., Conclusion: Executive dysfunction and left frontal WMH are correlated with neuropsychiatric symptoms in these patients., (Copyright © 2010 S. Background: Although confluent white matter lesion (WML) is associated with cognitive impairment, the mechanism explaining this association is controversial. We aimed to investigate comprehensively the MRI predictors of cognitive impairment in confluent WML., Methods: Among 45 lacunar stroke patients who had confluent WML, we evaluated the association of executive function [Mattis Dementia Rating Scale - Initiation/Perseveration subscale (MDRS I/P)] and global cognition [Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)] with the volume of WML, measures of lacunes and microbleeds, and the volumes of 99 other specific brain regions., Results: Regression analyses showed that WML volume predicted performance on the MDRS I/P (beta = -0.34, p = 0.016) independent of age. Volumes of cortical gray matter (cGM; beta = 0.41, p = 0.003), the lateral fronto-orbital gyrus (beta = 0.38, p = 0.01), superior frontal gyrus (beta = 0.29, p = 0.04), lateral ventricle (beta = -0.30, p = 0.04), and posterior limb of the internal capsule (beta = 0.43, p = 0.002) predicted MDRS I/P performance independent of WML volume. Volumes of cGM, and the lateral fronto-orbital gyrus predicted MMSE performance as well., Conclusion: Atrophy along the frontosubcortical pathways and cGM predict cognition in confluent WML independent of WML volume., ((c) 2007 S.
