The aim of the thesis was to find out different ways to watch and utilize food shows on TV. The food shows were studied as part of the interviewees’ lifestyle as well as an opportunity to stand out from unfamiliar lifestyles. All the food shows on cost-free television channels from March 17 to April 13, 2008, were charted. Based on the supply of that period, the food shows were categorized into five different genres: traditional food program, documentary, travelling, lifestyle and reality TV. A 30-minute compilation of the shows in each category was edited. The compilation was then shown to ten students in the Degree Programme in Service Management and ten students in the Degree Programme in Media Design. After the viewing the students were interviewed. The interviewees did not take any recipes from the shows but were inspired by them. The food shows gave them ideas and increased their interest in food and cooking. The food shows were also seen as entertainment. When choosing a show to watch, the most important criterion was its genuineness. The food, the people, the milieu and the genre all had to correlate to the viewer’s lifestyle. Watching food shows was part of everyday routines but only reality TV serials were watched regularly. The study showed a need for a food show focusing on everyday cooking, addressed to young adults. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, mihin käyttötarkoituksiin medianomi- ja restonomiopiskelijat ruokaohjelmia hyödyntävät ja miten ne heidän arkeensa sijoittuvat. Ruokaohjelmia tutkittiin osana ihmisen omaa elämäntyyliä ja mahdollisuutena erottautua vieraiksi ja epäaidoiksi koetuista elämäntyyleistä. Television maksuttomien kanavien ruokaohjelmatarjontaa kartoitettiin 17.3.–13.4.2008. Tarjonnan perusteella ruokaohjelmat jaoteltiin viiteen genreen: perinteinen ruokaohjelma, matkustusohjelma, asiaohjelma, lifestyle ja tosi-tv. Eri genrejä edustavista ohjelmista tehtiin puolen tunnin mittaisen koosteen, joka näytettiin kohdejoukolle ennen haastatteluja. Haastatteluihin osallistui kymmenen restonomi- ja kymmenen medianomiopiskelijaa. Ruokaohjelmista koettiin saatavan ideoita ja innostusta ruokaan ja ruoanlaittoon, vaikka reseptejä ei ohjelmista otettukaan. Ohjelmiin suhtauduttiin myös viihteenä. Ohjelmia ei kuitenkaan valittu viihteen tai hyödyn näkökulmasta, vaan keskeiseksi kriteeriksi ohjelman valinnassa nousi aitous. Ohjelman ruoan, ihmisten, ympäristön ja genren tuli olla katsojan elämäntyylin mukaisia. Vieraiksi ja epäaidoiksi koettuja ohjelmia ei katseltu. Ruokaohjelmia silmäiltiin arkiaskareiden ohessa ja osana ohjelmavirtaa. Ruokaohjelmien koettiin olevan ”hyvää seuraa”. Ainoastaan juonellisia tosi-tv–ohjelmia seurattiin säännöllisesti. Monille ruokaohjelmien katseleminen liittyi rutiineihin ja päivärytmiin. Tutkimuksessa nousi esiin selkeä tarve tavalliseen arkiruokaan keskittyvästä ohjelmasta, joka olisi nuorten aikuisten elämäntyylin mukainen
