Even casual awareness of that fragment of recent intellectual history related to corporate behavior should dispel the belief that scholarly interest in business ethics represents a kneejerk reaction to the Gulf, Lockheed, and similar fiascoes. Such interest has been simmering for a long time. Nearly twenty years have elapsed since William Ruder, Assistant Secretary of Commerce in the Kennedy Administration, completed a government-sponsored survey on the teaching of business ethics in colleges and universities. Since that study included a wealth of information, its quiet interment-without wide distribution or even publication-was regrettable.1 Fortunately, however, Raymond Baumhart (who around that same time was completing what is now viewed as the classic empirical study of businessmen's perceptions of values), extracted the major findings of the Ruder survey, added his own insights, and provided scholars with a fairly comprehensive understanding of the state of the art.2
