Noise pollution has become the second major environmental issue after the air pollution. It negatively affects public health,animal and plant growth,that therefore seriously hinders the sustainable development of ecological environment. To obtain detailed noise distribution information,several countries have launched the noise mapping strategic action. This paper first summarizes the development roadmap of environmental noise sensing technologies in China,and discusses its current state. Then,a comprehensive survey of recent developments on acoustic sensor networks is provided in terms of system architecture,low-cost sensor node design,sound taxonomy and classification,as well as energy harvesting and mobile sound sensing. Based on that analysis,four open issues regarding energy-efficient sensing,lightweight sound noise identification,dependable wireless multimedia transmission and node deployment are identified.
